Dear Farris:

I spoke with Ed Claughton and Bob Achor today in an attempt to secure
information which might be helpful to you in the preparation of your
speech to be given at the Miami Kiwanis Club on April 3, 1959.

First of all. Senator Joe Eaton spoke to the club two weeks ago on the
general topic of Florida's 1959 Legislative Session, so it is suggested
that your comments on this subject. if you had planned to discuss it
at all. be limited to a rather general reference to the Legislature and
that not too much time he spent on this topic.

It is the concensus of opinion that the membership of this particular
organization contains no single basic type to which you might gear your
speech. For the most part, they are a group of extremely successful
businessmen from every walk of life in our area. It would be impossible
to give you any one particular topic or theory which would meet with
unanimous approval other than the suggestion I am about to make. We
feel that you should give a forceful talk on the best points of your pro-
gram. touching m a general way on your personal background and accom-
plishments. This group will be interested in forming an impression

and opinion of Farris Bryant the individual. They are accustomed to
good weekly pragrams and rather high-level talks by speakers who
appear before them. This of course is the forum in which you function
so excellently. and we are all sure that your position in this area will

be greatly strengthened after your appearance at this meeting.

In my opinion, this is not a place to engage in a discussion of your stand
on the racial issue, or, for that matter. any extremely controversial
point.
