Dear Farris:
On my return from Tallahassee a few weeks ago. i stepped overnight
in Deland. Florida. The purpose of my visit was twofold. First. i
wanted to spend some time with some close friends oi mine who live
in Deland. and. secondly. to ascertain {or myself the validity of cero
tain remarks made by Tom Cobb at our Ocaia meeting. if you recall.
Tom eXpressed considerable doubt concerning the loyalty of Mr. White-
hair and others in Deland. Tom also expressed considerable concern
over your present popularity in Volusia County. I had reason to believe
that Tom's remarks. while well omeaning. were not exactly accurate.
hence my visit to Deland.
Bill Sherman. a law school colleague and a close personal friend of
mine. practices law in Deland in partnership With Hall. Sweeny and
Godby and has worked closely with Mr. Whitehair (or over three years
on the Crummer v. DePont suit. Bill's attitude (which is an accurate
reection of Mr. Whitehair) is one of wholehea rted interest and support
{or yous personally and your candidacy in 1960. After a long discussion
with Bill. there is absolutely no question in my mind that these people
were loyal to you in the last campaign and will so continue in the next.
5 a follow -up to my visit. if 1 may make the suggestion. you might
write Sherman mentioning that l relayed to you his expression of interest
and his desire to help in the event you should desire to run again. if you
do write. please bear in mind that Bill was one of your diligent support-
ers the last time.

I visited with Mr. Charles Turner in Homestead one day last week. You
will recall that Mr. Turner is presently on the City Council and has
served for many years on the School Board in Dade County and did
all that he could to help the last time. I took the liberty of disclosing
some of the details of our meeting in Ocala and soliciting Mr. Turner's
continued support of you in the future. His response was very gratify-
ing and I am sure that you can expect considerable help from him should
you decide to run again.
I also spoke to Mayor Tom Harris, of Homestead, whom I had the pleas-
ure of assisting during the past legislative session on a few local matters
and I have every reason to expect that he, too, will strongly support your
candidacy.
When the appropriate time arrives. I will. of course. solicit the support
of the Dade delegation and I am sure that while I cannot say that they will
be for you at this time, I can say that i am close enough to them to gain
favorable and attentive consideration to any remarks concerning this
matter that I would make. Of course, your personal friendship and as-
sociation with Cliff Herrell will do more than anything the rest of us
could do toward getting his support.
I want to thank you very much for the pleasant time and marvelous hos-
pitality of yourself. Wayne McCall. Jimmie, Leal. Willard, and the
others during my stay in Ocala.
