Dear Farris:

I am the world's worst letter'writer when it comes to personal
matters. This, plus the fact that I had in November Just finished
several weeks of strenuous campaigning as Assistant Campaign
Manager for Otis Shiver, the incumbent and losing candidate for
City Commissioner here in liami, and the accumulation of work
piled up in the cities as a result thereof, are my excuses for
failure to answer your letter of November 27th.

However, I have not been entirely out-of-touch for l have had a
number of conversations with Robert Achor. I told Bob in latter
November that because of a pending appointment from Governor Collins
I found it expedient to remain quiet in the gubernatorial race, and
Bob agreed that this would proper for all concerned.

Now the contingency which kept me inactive has come to pass, 3
of January let I was appointed Deputy Industrial Commissioner,
Florida Industrial Commission, by Governor Collins.

The fact of presently holding this State oi!ice,plus the load of
work cast upon me as an inexperienced Commissioner, plus con-
tinuing my own business eliminates the possibility of my becoming
very active in your campaign.

However, my loyalty is with you. by family and I and close
friends will give you our vote. Perhaps after further discussion
with Bob Achor or Tom Barkdull I can find some additional way to
help you in a quiet, non-public manner.

I will take the initiative and contact Tom Barkdull. In the mean-
time until see you again, my very best wishes.
