Dear Madison:

Belatedly but most assuredly, I want to thank
you for your kind letter of August 12. Favorable
responses are coming in daily from many other
friends throughout the State and i want you to
know that I am grateful for your willingness to
help and for your friendship.

Madison, 1 am glad to report that we are over-
coming the nancial problem which haunted our

campaign in 1956. All in all the picture looks
extremely good.

in clariiying my feeling on the question of
segregation, my position is as follows: I
believe in segregation. and I believe that the
Governor ought to do all that he can to preserve
it. That does not involve his condoning violence
and certainly does not call for refusal to abide
by direct order of a court relative to individuals
ordered to be integrated. It does mean "hat in
the general political field and so far as he can
under the United States and Florida constitutions,
he ought to preserve segregation.

To be sure. I do not advocate the destruction

of the public school system in order to maintain
segregation. At the same time, I do not believe
that any gubernatorial candidate is being honest
with himself or the people of Florida when he
says he can and will prevent integration. Such
lies beyond his power.
