Mr. Farris Bryant
Attorney-at-Law

Box 563
Ocala, Florida

Dear Farris:

Since receiving your letter or July 27th, 1 have given the matter

of the Governor's race next May a great deal of thought. First of
all, I would like to say that I an deeply flattered that you would
ask my advice regarding the possibility of your candidacy in that

race.

During the past ten weeks I have travelled the State rather ex-
tensively. and have had the opportunity to talk with a great many
people. Ican_as§ure you that you hayeAa_gregtdngnx_friqus
throughout Florida. This IE EItFEmendgus advantage_over the other
potential candidates in_the Governor's race, because you aie51.
ready a well Known figure throughout the State. Your ideals and
philosophies are well known in almost every corner of Florida.

I was with Haydon Burns in Jacksonville on July 28th and 29th, and
he has the utmost confidence that he will be our next Governor.
Haydon has a great deal of support in Duval County. yet when I dis-
cussed the possibility of his candidacy with leaders in_other_par.ts~
of the State I figd that_they Know very_little o£_hin. He has made
a'BIIEht dent in public appeal by showing his film "The Jacksonville
Story in a few of the major cities. but he has not reached through
the crust of civic leaders to the majority of the voting public.

Three weeks ago I spent a pleasant afternoon with Doyle Carlton.
Doyle has a magic name, being the son of a former Governor. and he
has somewhat of an Abe Lincoln appearance which will be very popu-
lar with a great many people. I {eel that-his.age will hurt.hin,
and it also occurs tg_ne that prle will have a tough time getting

thebig'citilspporta.

-2- Hr. Farris Bryant

During the latter part of last week in Miami I heard the very
disturbing rumor that Cliff Herrell has a deal with Dickinson

whereby he will enter the primary but throw his support to

Dickinson at the last minute. Information comes to me from other
scuthern counties that Dickinson is working hard to get other
political leaders to support him in the Governor's race. An at-
torney friend of mine who is prominent, both in Hiani and in
Tallahassee. feels sure that Dickinson has an inside track to the
Governor's chair. Here again is a case where I feel that his strength
is localized, and I question Herrells ability to swing a majority of
the Dade County votes to anybody.

I am certainly taking the long way around in getting to the point,
but I felt that I should bring out the above points because they

are the background to my thinking. Your chances in the Governor's
race appear to me to be excellent. However. I am sure you will
agree that there is a great deal of work to be done between now

and Hay. You asked me to be frank in my expression, and I will.

I feel that in your several speaking engagements last year and early
this year you have made a fine impression on the upper-crust of
civic leaders and the memberships of many civic organizations.
however. these people do not represent the majority of the voting
public. It,is_sag\inpmany_quartersithgt because-of your educational
backzmmd IQthVG_ the 1111;191ch t9 {talk dawn". to people. nd that
it willgbe_impossible for you to talk to the common man on his level.
This will be the biggest hurdle to jump between now and next Hay. I
have heard you speak many times, and have seen you on TV, and it is
my feeling that you have more of a common touch" than any potential
candidate in the race. with the exception of Doyle Carlton. As long
as you do have a natural common touch". I feel it imperative that
you put it before the so-called little people in the State and let
them recognize it. You must show them that you have a feeling for
their needs. and that you can discuss the wants and desires of the

people of Florida at any level. It is my opinion that this should
be the key point in planning the strategy of your campaign.

Farris. I have offered my opinions as yOu have requested. not as an
expert in politics. but merely as an ohersvsr and a good listener

as I travel around the State. My business and my associations bring
me in contact with a great many influential people of the State. and
of course. at this time of the year it is impossible to avoid dis-
cussing the forthcoming Governor's race. The above~is the sum total

of my observations. and their impact uponmy personal feelings.
Best regards,

/

I
