Re: 1953 Legislative Committees
Dear Farris:
I am returning herewith the tentative list of committees
for the ensuing session with designations of my preferences.
Please be assured that my selections are based entirely
upon the desire to be of assistance to you, our State, and
my County, and that I have no particular political aspera-
tions. I realise that I have designated some or the prin-
cipal committees, but I am certain that you will appreciate
the intent motivating such expressions. Yen have previously
explained your plan for the various committeeships whereby
no single individual would be overburdened with too many
principal committees.
In connection with the various judiciary committees,
John Bollinger warned me that two were very nice committees
on which to serve and that the remaining two did not amount
to much. or course. my first preference would be the committee
on which you think I could be of best service.
For your personal information, I an a native or St.Lucie
County and am now thirty-nine years of age. I have practiced
law in St. Lucie County since 1935. with the exception of
approximately two years as a commissioned officer in the Navy.
I am a past president of the local Bar Association.
In addition to my 1e a1 practice. I own and personally
supervise approximately 2 0 acres of citrus grove. My experi-
ence in the citrus field began in 1939. I have Just concluded
serving as the presiding officer at the-annual Iniian River
Citrus Seminar which was attended by some three or four hun-
dred citrus growers and packers.

I have checked Committee 1h, Drainage and Water Conser-
vation. Although I have had no particular experience in this
field from a technical standpoint. approximately the westerly
two-thirds of my County is vitally interested in the program
now being conducted by the Central & Southern Florida Flood
Control District. I have had considerable experience in repre-
senting local drainage districts.
As to Cities and Towns. I served as Municipal Judge
for a number of years prior to serving on the local City
Commission. I served as a City Commissioner for approximately
eighteen months before being elevated to the Mayorship. which
position I held for three years. I have the unique honor, it
it may be called that, of having been elected Mayor on two
separate occasions without opposition. This has not occurred
otherwise in the history or our community. I resigned as Mayor
in the middle of a term to form a partnership with Wallace
Sample the then City Attorney.
I have been Attorney for the Board of County Commissioners
of St. Lucie County, Fort Pierce Port Authority and St. Lucie
County Sanitary District since the fall of 1950.
I have had no previous legislative experience.
To the best of my recollection, my only campaign commit-
ment was to definitely support the Kinimum Foundation Fund for
the school system.
My County is primarily interested in the following:
(a) Citrus. truck farming and cattle.
(b) Tourists
(c) Commercial salt water fishing.

blems that confront you in the naming of the committees, and
again I wish to repent that my personal interest lies solely
