Dear Dick:

I appreciate so each your letter of October 7th and the
opportunity which you give me there to be one of your list of

potential speakers in behalf of the Stewnson-Sparmn
candidacy.

Although I an or the opinion that Wn is
eminently qualified by chameter, e co and experience

to be the President of the united States, and confident that
he will perform the duties of that office in a manner
creditable to the Democratic Party, I am at such odds with him
on his atand on States Rights (which I construe to include not
only F290 and Tidelanda, but also the more important overall
relationship or the Federal and State Government) that I would
be of no value inthe ticket as a speaker.

I want to commend you for the good work you are doing, and wish
that my own views were such that With intellectual integrity

I could lend a hand.
