My dear Farris:
Your gracious letter of the 15th was not digested until
today as we had been out of the area for the past week.
i do not know of any individual democrat or republican
who, in my opinion, is as well qualified to lead our
State than yourself. However, our current trend in
the field of political science does not seem to place
much emphasis on qualifications, integrity, intelligence
and /or ability. It appears that the candidate who can
create the most noise plus promise of "give away"
programs is usually the victor. Your entire background
and breeding is opposed to such endeavors whether in
or out of the political field. therefore, I wonder if the
offer of yourself as a public servant is "good" for you
and your family.
There is no doubt that you can achieve an excellent
showing in the 1980 campaign providing you slug it out
with Cliff Herrell, Carlton, plus other potential candi-
dates. Examination of the current hopeful's background
plus some recent utterances in public does not indicate
too great a knowledge of the actual problems that confront
our State. You do have the positive knowledge of our
problems plus the intelligence to overcome current
governmental hurdles as Chief Executive. Now the
question arises as to how the voting public can be sold
on you and your ability. It is our considered opinion that
this can only be achieved through the use of modern
campaign techniques which include all the tactics used by
successful candidates. Such endeavor is costly and
requires a hard hitting organization to function as soon
as possiblgLA _
