Dear Ferris:
Please forgive my not answering your letter sooner, however I felt
I would like to make a few inquiries before sending you any information.
The political situation insofar as the governors race is concerned
at this end of the state appears to shape up like this:
1. From sources in wauchule it seems that Doyle Carlton Jr. is new
in the race for governor. If this is true then apparently Cliff Rerrell
cf Dada will not make the race since he and Carlton are very good friends.
Similarly if the foregring is true then Verle Pope of St. Augustine will
not make the race. If Carlton runs, rumor has it here that Sheriff
John Spottsuood will lend him his support.
2. It Feasley is a candidate I believe as others do he will have
the support of B. C. Papy in Ronroe County, at least rumors seen to
indicate that he will. How he stands throughout the state I do not know,
but on the surface If Papy throws his support to Beasley here, then it
seems reasonable to conclude Beasley night conceivably receive the support
of Charley Johns in North Florida.
3. Millard Caldwell, tradition holding true, will not be successful
if he aaplres to another tens in the governor's chair. when he ran for
governor he was well knovn in Florida and while still well known in
North Florida and in political circles he is somewhat of a stranger to
people in the Southern portion of the State. If I recall correctly I
belieVe he had the almost solid support of the cattle interests when he
first ran. This being trd'his vote should be "split" between he and
Carlton in the first primary.
A. Brailey Cohan, shruld not be counted out altogether as a
possible runner yet. His work on the Milk Commission with the resultant
reduction in price to the consumer can be a factor in his case, PLUS the
solid following he has and has held onto even up until today. I have not
talked to Bralley lately, but I do not believe he will run. As a two
time loser this would also count against him.
5. Hayden Burns is in the Miami area this week to 311 speaking
engagements. He is admittedly an avowed potential candidate if things
shape up right. He extends the hand of friendahlp to the Dale county
