Dear Farris:

Received your letter enclosing tentative list of committees
for the '53 Session and askinz that I signify my choices for
placement on such committees.

I have marked six of the committees with my order of prefer
ence, and I am enclosing it herewith.

I made few if any campaign promises, relying more strongly on
the record of the '51 House and my part in it. About the only
promise I made which might amOunt to anything, was the same as that
made by our Governor dlect, that I personally was strongly against
additional taxation in Florida, unless 1 could be shown the absolute
need of raising more funds. For that reason, I have named the
Finance and Taxation Committee, on which 1 served in my previous
sessions, as my number one committee.

I bracketed Judiciary "A","B","U" and "D" for the reason that
I was unable to ascertain which one you would expect to handle the
same type of legislation as that which was referred to Judy "B" in
the '51 session. That committee, as you remember, was a small
committee (6) and i feel that we did pretty fair work because of
that very reason. However, I will leave that up to you and will do
whatever you want me to do in serving.

If you feel that have asked for too many committees, I will
be perfectly satisfied to have you eliminate any of the last three,
to-wit: Judiciary, Alcoholic Beverages and Public Amusements. I
would a whole lot rather do a good job on a few committees, rather
than be an absentee voter, or a proXy voter on a lot of committee.

Right now I'm undergoing a little treatment at the Naval Air
Station Hospital in Pensacola in an effort to correct a neuritic
condition in my right arm. I have every belief that it will be

during the coming session.
