Dear Mr. Speaker:

When Senator Smathers returned yesterday from
Lee Angelou enroute to Herb Wolfe's barbecue (perhaps you'll
see him there), I checked with him on the Tallahassee trip.
He had already so committed himself to Senator Stuart SymingtOn
for May 7 to 10 that he said he thought we'd better aboot for
some other date. Senator Synington came by shortly thereafter,
as a matter of fact, to tell him about the plans which he has
made. I do wish I could get in on these things a little sooner -
I had also accepted an invitation to the white House press

correspondent's dinner for that weekend which I am now having
to iecline.

It may be that the Senators will have to go down at
different times although you folks would probably prefer to have
the: both at once and get it over with. When do you suggest?

Today is the big day I hope it has been perfect
for you.
