Dear Farris,

Knowing that you are interested in learning all of
the political scuttlebutt as early as possible, I thought
I should advise you that in a recent coffee conversation
with friends very close to Millard Caldwell, it was re-
ported that he arrived at the office yesterday morning in
a mood which urged him to announce that he was ready to
call in the press and state that he would not be a candi-

date for any office next Spring.

I, at no time, thought Millard would make the race
and, the conversation did not come as a surprise to me.

I have some definite ideas concerning the solicita-
tion of support from his close friends, if you are inter-

ested.

I am leaving Friday for a little vacation in the
North Carolina mountains; expect to be down your way
after my return to the State and, will give you a call.
