Mr. Farris Bryant
Post Office Box 563
Ocala. Florida
Dear Farris:
Just a note regarding an interesting development.
I am sure you read that Sam But: is leaving the
Times-Union and moving to Gainesville. Having that in
mind and also your expected forthcoming announcement,
I went to see Bob Miller yesterday. Dink went with me.
I told him I was most hopeful that "if you should
announce Saturday he would give it a prominent
treatment in Sunday mornings paper. He assured us that
he would do so and as a matter of fact, that inasmuch
as Ted David's announcement was also expected at the
same time. he would arrange upstairs for them to
feature your story on the first page of the state section
and David's on the second page. He stated that although
they would simply use the wire service story, that he
would select the best of the wire stories for use and
would also insert your picture.
He then confided that you were his preference in
the race. but that the paper was controlled by its
board Of directors who frequently had various views.
and for that reason primarily it had adhered to a policy
of not outright supporting any particular candidate.
He said that Haydon had approached him with the thought
that perhaps in this instance they would depart from
that prior policy to back him, but that such would not
be the case. The reason given was that the term local
candidate which Haydon had suggested should be the
basis of departure from the prior policy in this instance
was only a relative term from the point of view of the

paper. For example, someone from Nassau County might. by
the same token, be considered local" and as a matter
of fact you yourself could be considered local since your
entire area was served by the paper.
With a broad grin he wanted to know if the meeting
last weekend had proved to be a basis for optimism regard-
ing the campaign. It developed that his wife had been
with Mrs. anstice Roberts at the hotel that morning
and had seen you and all of the activity in the lobby.
and Miller had correctly guessed the occasion for the
gathering.
The whole visit was most pleasant and I think you
can be assured of good treatment from the two local
papers.
Campaign headquarters have now been officially
reserved. The address is 115 West Porsyth Street.
Best wishes.
Sincerely,
A;
Winch
