Dear Reds
I have your letter of January 8.

Perhaps I do your paper, and especially you, an
injustice, but this was my reaction when the request for
the interview came through: "The Tribune is not interested
in giving an impartial review of the first two years or
this administration. It is interested in picking at flaws
or apparent flaws showing up errors and shortcomings." l,
of course, have no right to object to this being done and
I have never written or asked you to refrain, but I don't
have to help you. The Tribune constantly questions my
moral standards, inpunes my motives, and questions my
capacity. This is your right. But it does not create the
kind of confidence that makes me want to sit down for a
discussion with one or your reporters.

I an sorry to have to say these things because you and
I have always enJoyed a good personal relationship, but this
is as I see it.
