Dear tr. Kynes:
Here are two item of infer-nation which my be of use
to Governor Bryant on his forthcoming: trip to Japan:
1.
One of the most influential academicians in Japan
(which is heavily influenced by its universities)
is Prof. Kenichi Malaya, Head, 'lepartnent of American
Studies, lhiversity of Tokyo. Professor Nakaya is
also one of the most popular radio and TV cote-entators
in Japan. He has visited here and lawns and likes the
University of Florida. More to the point, two of his
best students were sent to Gainesville to do graduate
work. One of them, Professor Yoshimitsu Me was
awarded the Ph. 3. here in l)9--the first Japanese
to get a doctoral degree in Leer-icon history-mm is
now at the University of Tokyo. The other, "r. Tunic
Reagan, now in Tokyo for a short period. is studying
at Gainesville and will receive the first doctorate
in Latin-American history accorded a Japanese. Both
of these young men have 9. significant future ahead
in Japan and both "and Professor Nakays--have a
great attachment to the University of Florida. The
Governor night like to mntior. this and to see them
when he is in Japan.
It is any belief, although my information is somewhat
dated, that Tampa is a major port for Japanese
shipping. They are, I believe, one of our heaviest
purchasers of phosphate. y. Japanese-incricm.
resident in Tampa, told me several years ago that
it would be an excellent idea if the State of Florida
created an Intema tional House at Tampa. I rot ouite
sure what he had in mind but I was interested in his
statement that a considerable amount of Japanese
shipping puts in at Tampa.
