Enclosed herewith is copy of a letter I have
written George Smathers urging the appointment of Sherman
Smith as United States District Judge, Southern DistriCt of
Florida.

Knowing of your especially high regard for
Sherman, i hope you will use your many talents to bring about
this appointment.

'I he returns clearly show that there was an anti-
Johnson vote which benefited the entire Republican ticket.
There was also clearly evident the active participation of
Governor Burns in behalf of Kirk. We will never Know
whether it took the combination to bring about the result or
whether any one of them would have done it without the other.
