Gladstone; an Wotan.

Florida, the land or the friendly nodding
palms, celebrates the real Christmas. Here
we decorate the palm as our Christmas tree
to honor the birth of the Christ Child, for
Florida palms and Florida climate are much
like that of the Holy Land.

In every country where Christmas is cele-
brated, native plants and trees are woven
into the days observance. Florida has
twelve native palms, and with hundreds of
imports living happily here, we are truly
a land of the palms . The Sabal Palmetto
is our State tree so for us the palm is a
natural Christmas tree!

From the palms we find many interesting
partsfronds, boots, spathes, seeds and
seed carrierstor our house decorations.
Sprayed gold, silver or gay Christmas
colors, these parts with other native plant
materials, may be fashioned into attractive
decorations for home, school and places of
business. Such decorations are in har-
mony with our Florida sunshine, ripening
fruit and bright flowers in a world of green
at Christmas time.

\ H ng lights so they

will not burn your tree

Out-of-doors we decorate large palms . .

any type . .

in our yards and gardens, in

public parks, by churches, schools and
motels, and out on highway entrances to

our towns!

We select our most beautiful

specimen which best lend themselves to

our planned type of decoration.

They may

be in singles, groups or avenues.

TO DECORATE

I

OUTDOOR PALMS

Use flood lights attached to tree or on
ground. Try for effect. Amber or
green filters are best. Spotlight seed
clusters, blossoms or spathes. Add a
Merry Christmas" sign.

To a floodlighted palm add Christmas
balls, balloons, or bells to midrib of
each frond. A large "Star of the East"
may be added to the top. Attach star
to wire on pole which extends into
the ground, securing to the trunk of
the palm. Note: never attach star or
ornaments to the new center or un-
opened bud frond, for to do so may
kill your tree.

Regular Christmas tree lights are beau-
tiful on palms. At the base of the
palm fronds attach to trunk of tree
several rubber threeway electric taps.
Use one string of lights to each frond.
These lights must be hung under mid-
rib of each frond to keep from burn.
ing the tree. Each globe should be
tied with a cord. Never wind strings
of lights around the palm as we do
in decorating the traditional Christ-

mas tree.

Indoors we decorate potted growing palms
. . large and small . for table and win-
dows. The Neantha Belle, Phoenix roebel-
eni, Adenedia, Alexanderia, Kentia and
Areaca are found readily in nurseries and
garden centers. We decorate tiny palms
for our tables in cafes and hotels, and place
them on trays in hospitals and rest homes.
Children in schools are taught how to dec-
orate small palms and how to make home
and school decorations from parts of palms.

TO DECORATE
INDOOR PALMS

I Add tiny Christmas balls or bells to
midrib of each palm frond. Decorate
pot with foil, add balls, Santas or
angels scaled to the size of the palm.

2 Pots or containers may be painted or
covered with foil. Small palms, dec-
orated, are effective in Santa planters.

3 Small Christmas tree lights, available
in many shops today, are effective
on indoor palms. Extend green plant
stake into soil of potted palm. At
the top of this stake, fasten with cord
or tape, the end globe of your string
of lights. Secure a star over this light.
Begin at top of palm arranging globes
under midrib of each frond, using tape
or tiecord. Work downward to base
of tree. Remember, never to attach
ornaments or star to the center un-
opened bud frond.

Use your imagination to individualize your

Florida Christmas tree!

Several years ago the Lake County Council

of Federated Garden Clubs and the Lake
County Chamber of Commerce originated
the "Palms for Christmas idea. With Gov-

ernor Collins proclamation the entire state
of Florida is teaming up with the plan.

pine at palm?

Said the Palm, 1 was the first Christmas
tree;
On that Holy Night I stood there,

While the Star shone down through my
waving fronds

And I heard the song in the air.

Yet for years they have honored the green
pine tree
And decked it with candles bright,
Though it stood a half a world away
Drifted over with snow so white.

It is time that somebody honored me
With tinsel and jewels rare;

For I am the Worlds First Christmas Tree-
When the heavens sang, I was there 1

Spoke the Pine: A wondrous joy was
yours
I myself saw only the Star
But through all the years since that light
shone forth
I have worshipped from afar;

And throngs of children have decked my
boughs
And thrilled as they sang of that light
And the lgve that to earth from Heaven came
own

On that first great Christmas night.

We should band together, this Holy Eve,
To tell the story old;
You, in the sunny land you love,

And I, where the snow drifts cold.

You, in the tropical out-of-doors,
I, by the fireside bright,

Can bring blessed thoughts of the Light that
dawned

On that first joyous Christmas Night l

FLORIDA GREETING CARDS

In the past several ears some beautiful

Christmas greetin cards ave been delevoped and
manufactured by reeting Card companies.

These cards are available through the Lake
County Chamber of Commerce "Palms for Christ-
mas" committee, Lake County greeting card stores
and some of the nurseries.

These greeting cards carry the theme of The
Palm is Floridas Christmas Tree." They substitute
the beauty of the tropics for ice. snow and sleet.
