Dear Farris:
I tried to get to you immediately following the
ceremony at which you were awarded the Doctor of
Laws degree at Florida Atlantic University last
week, to personally congratulate you. You got
away before I could do so.
First. congratulations upon receipt of that honor.
No one knows more than I do how much it was
deserved. As your tenure as Governor draws to a
close. I could not let it go by without a note of
deep thanks and gratitude to you for all you have
done [or Florida Atlantic University in particular,
and for the cause of higher education in Florida
in general, during your term of office.
I have seized upon every possible occasion to give
you full credit here in Palm Beach County for the
fact that Florida Atlantic University is today a
reality. All too often the people remember only
those things which you did While in office that they
disagreed with, and so I think it only fitting that
at every opportunity I can remind them of this
monumental accomplishment for the State and for our
area. Without your initiative, push and willingness
to stick your neck out". it would not now be a
reality.

In closing let me also thank you for your many.
many other personal courtesies shown me during
your term of office, and mine as State Senator.
Regardless of the disappointments, I am sure
that Florida citizens share with you a sense of
pride in the many. many outstanding accomplish-
ments which have been wrought for our State
during your fruitful and busy four years.
