The Honorable Farris Bryant

The Governor

The State of Florida 5 .
State Capitol ; n
Tallahassee, Florida

Dear Farris:

Thank you for your letter or August 19th enumerating
accomplishments of your administration.

The completion of the turnpike to Wildwood and the
connection of interstate 7S certainly is a great
boon to automobile travel for this area. Returning
from our vacation, we traveled this route and it is
certainly a pleasure to travel on these improved
highways it will undoubtedly be of great help to
the south end of Florida. Although many people here
will not give you credit for it, I am sure those who
are familiar with the hurdles you had to overcome to
effect this extension or the turnpike should certainly
appreciate your efforts.

I feel that you may well be proud of your accomplish-
ments in the areas that you mentioned in your letter,
as well as many other which I am sure are too numerous
to mention. Particularly, I was very proud of you in
the way you handled the ruckas in St. Augustine. I
thought your direct action in trying to prevent more
bloodshed was commendable even in the race of the order
of Judge Simpson, District Federal Judge.

I also thought your testimony before the Congressional
Committee concerning your views on the Civil Rights Bill
was very logical, and I agree with your views whole-
heartily; however, it is law and, of course, we must
uphold the law to the best or our ability even though
we might disagree with the principles of this law.

The Hon. Farris Bryant ~2- September 2, 196u
The Governor

The State of Florida

State Capitol

Tallahassee, Florida

I trust that you have completed your plans and activities
after January 1st, which I understand will be the
continuation of the practice or law with John Marshall in

Ocala.

Thanks again for sending me your letter, and I want to
tell you again that I feel you have done a tremendously
fine Job as Governor, but like all people who try to
accomplish anything, there are many who dissent or are
dissatisfied no matter how much good one may have brought
about through his efforts.

Give my best regards to Julie, and here's hoping your
remaining months as Governor will be pleasant and riotless.

Sincerely,

mm
