Recognizing that the United States of America is one of
the Leading countries in the world, and
Recognizing that the action of the United States is being
observed by the peoples of the world, and
RecOgnizing that thousands or United States citizens are con-
cerned with justice for all peoples, regardless of race, color,
or creed, and,
On the basis of our cannon religious heritage,
We, a group of vitally interested ministers and laymen
of Central Florida religious groufs, do expreer grave con-
cern with racial violence in the Jtate of Florida and par-
ticularly in our neighboring city of St. Augustine.
Our concerns are as followe:

for your work in the formation of e bi-recial committee in
the city of St. Augustine.
we via! to express our sincere thanks to you for assign-
ing state protective personnel to the city of St. Augustine
during the racial strife, and in like regard, rely upon your
judgmnt and effort to maintain protection for all St.
Augustine citizens until the tension of racial etrUe has
been ailevinted.
de urge you to direct the State Attorney's office in
St. Augustine to prosecute with utmost vigor those persons
arrested and charged with a breach of the law.
To this end it is respectful.qu suggested that The Honorable
Farris Bryant, Governor of the State of Florida, appoint an
InteMacial and Inter-Religious Committee of One Hundred,
similar to the well known Comittse of One lhmdred now functioning
in our State. Because moral leadership is traditionally and
rightfully the role of the Church, it is suggested that this
committee will be chaired by a pressidiun of four churchmen, a
Roman Catholic, a Protestant, a Jew, and a Negro, either lay or cloriCal.

1. It shall be the aim of this comittee to promote good
will among all races and faiths, according to the
religious and moral precepts of our society, and the
1&5 of our country and our State.
2. When called upon, it shall attempt to obviate inter-
racial strife, or arbitrate the same if it exists.
3. The pracsidiwn of the comittee shall act in an
advisory capacity to the Governor on inter-racial and
inter-religious matters as the Governor desires, and
shall assume such other {motions in this area as
designated by him.
1:. The committee shall prepare informative materials, to
be distributed by the State of Florida, acquainting
citizens with tho laws of our State, as well as with
federal statutes pertaining to inter-religious and
inter-racial matters.
5. The comittne shall assist existing local committees
similarly constituted, or said in the establisrment or
such committees as needed.
8. Distribution
1. it his discretion, the Governor shall designate an
appropriate number of districts coverin: the entire
State.
2. The committee shall consist of sub-committees, each of
which shall be appointed by the Governor from within
each district.

1. Sub-camdttees on the district level shall include clergyman
of all major faiths, the Negro as well an the Caucasian race,
at least one attorney, and such other citizens as the
Governor shall select.
3. Conclusion
Wiring of the above as a long-range plan, we nomen-
tholess respectfully urge you to continue to lend the
power and prestige of your high office, and persist in
intervening, toward solving the problems with which we
are now faced.
It is prayerful]; expected that your personal inter-
vention and the. Governor's Inter-Racial and Inter-Religious
Committee of One Hundred will bring peace to strife-tom areas,
will prevent further outbreak of violence by a process of edu-
cation, and will return brotherhood and harmony to our State.
