Hon. 0. Farris Bryant
Attorney at Law
Ocala, Florida
Dear Farris:
Just a line to bring you up to date on what little activity
there has been over here. I Just had a long talk with Sax
Lloyd, and he is of the opinion that you are way out in
front and that nobody presently on the scene can touch you.
He thinks that Steve O'Connell has gotten out of the idea
of running, that Ted David is a dead duck, and that Alan
Boyd could never make it. Talk then turned to John McCarty,
whom I now understand has the bug. and Sax was of the opinion
that he would not be able to make the grade. In fact, he
told me that he would find it very distasteful to have to
tell John again that he shouldn't run, but I think that he
would do that. He told me also that he had told Verle Pope
that he couldn't make out. either, and that Verle had
gotten mad about it. Of course, you never make any friends
by telling a prospective candidate for governor that he
can't win. Any way, I share Sax's view on Verle and the
rest of the boys. of course.
with regard to John McCarty, Banty Saunders sidled up to me
after Kiwanis Club here several weeks ago, while he was
visiting here, and asked me if I could support John. Of
course. I questioned him about John's candidacy and he
allowed as how he thought that John definitely was going
to be in the race. Naturally, I told him that I would be
with you. which he understood.
The general consensus is that you are way out front and it
is going to take a strange and unusual combination of cir-
cumstances in order to catch you. I talked with John Rowe
at St. Petersburg the other day and he wanted to know how I
felt your chances were, which of course I told him. I
think he will be strongly for you.
A fellow named Jack Byrd here in Daytona Beach is very much
for you and wants to do some work when the time comes. He
can get a sound truck, etc., and is a pretty good worker

in campaigns. He was one of the doorkeepers in the House a
couple years back when you and I were there.
Sax believes that LeRoy Collins will not be too enthusiastic
about your candidacy, of course, and therefore the adminis-
tration will be casting around for some fair haired boy upon
which to bestow their support, but that this procedure is
not too effective, as Millard Caldwell demonstrated.
or course, you recognize that Sax has very strong and close
ties with the Collins crowd. It the race were to be held
today, I think he would go along with you. However, I think
it is Just a proposition of having to wait and see how it
goes as we get closer to the time.
I wish that you and Julia would bring the kids over for some
beaching this summer. We'd love to see you and we would love
for you to see our home in Ormond Beach.
With kindest personal regards, I am
//
Cord '1y,
3 T. Cobb
