FOREWORD
This series of bulletins numbered 22CJC is devoted to various list-
ings of Basic Materials for Florida Junior College Libraries. Sponsored
jointly by the Division of Community Junior Colleges of the State Depart-
ment of Education and by the Library School of Florida State University,
the bulletins are designed to provide convenient, up-to-date materials
lists for Florida's rapidly developing junior college libraries.
Dr. Louis Shores, Dean, Florida State University Library School (and
Sarah Reed, Assistant Professor) is the general editor of the series.
Students and faculty of the Florida State University Library School worked
under his direction in preparing the initial lists. The book lists have
been prepared by graduate students in the Library School at Florida State
University. After each list was completed, it was circulated among junior
college librarians and faculty members, both in Florida and outside the
state. The list was then compiled on the basis of the pooled judgment of
the respondents and appears as a Materials Bulletin.
These lists should prove useful not only because they are prepared
with the needs of the community junior college curricula clearly in mind,
but also because the two major basic lists, Bertalan's BOOKS FOR JUNIOR
COLLEGES (1954), and Mohrhardt's A LIST OF BOOKS FOR JUNIOR COLLEGE LIBRARIES
(1937), are out of date. It will be appreciated if suggestions as to ad-
ditions and deletions are forwarded to the Division of Community Junior
Colleges, State Department of Education, for consideration in subsequent
revisions of these bulletins.
A special word of appreciation goes to the students who have under-
taken these projects, and to the librarians and faculty members who by
giving so generously of their time and knowledge have made this series
of publications possible.
I also would like to mention particularly Dr. Louis Shores, Dean of
the Florida State University Library School, Miss Sarah Reed, formerly
Assistant Professor of Library Science, and Dr. James L. Wattenbarger,
Director, Division of Community Junior Colleges, State Department of Edu-
cation for their special contributions to this entire series.

North Florida Junior College
Madison, Florida
Like other graduate students of the Florida State University Library
School, the compiler utilized the pooled judgment technique in assembling
"A Basic List of Books in Philosophy, Religion, Art and Music for Florida
Junior College Libraries." Twenty-five non-Florida librarians and fifteen
junior college librarians from Florida schools cooperated in evaluating
the initial checklist of 533 titles. Selection of participating non-
Florida junior colleges was made on the same basis as in the previous
bulletins issued.
The checklist was compiled from current reviewing media, using
Bertalan's Books for Junior Colleges as a point of departure. Sources
used included Christian Century, Commonweal, American Artist, Musical
Quarterly, The Bookman's Manual, Book Review Digest and Standard Catalog
for High School Libraries. Publications issued after December, 1960 were
not used in formulating the checklist. Faculty members of the Florida
State University reviewed the preliminary checklist, suggesting additional
titles and discarding others which they considered inappropriate.
As some time has elapsed since the project was completed, it was
thought advisable to check the latest edition of Books in Print (1962)
for changes in prices and editions. No new titles have been added, al-
though many are now available, as this would negate the pooled judgment
technique used in the 1960 list. Many titles included on the earlier list
iii
are now available only in paperback editions and are so noted. Titles
now out of print have been deleted, although included in the Appendix.
Arrangement is by subject with an author index.
The titles entered here do not, of course, form a comprehensive col-
lection of materials in the subject areas of religion, philosophy, art
and music. An attempt was made to compress the list to a workable number
of titles, recognizing that a book collection must reflect the particular
needs of the institution which it serves. It is the basic purpose of the
lists in this series to present a nucleus from which a greater collection,
molded by the librarian, faculty and indirectly by the student, can grow.
