Turkey Creek under boil water notice

Today Staff Report
ALACHUA The water pressure of the City of
Alachua's potable water system in the Turkey Creek
subdivision and surrounding areas dropped below
the State minimum standard of 20psi early
Wednesday morning. City employees repaired the
problem and began flushing the distribution system
in the vicinity of the low pressure area and collected
samples to determine the absence of bacteriological
impurities.
As a precaution, the City ofAlachua advises that
all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice,
brushing teeth, or washing dishes be boiled. A
rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. As an
alternative, bottled water can be used.

This Precautionary Boil Water Notice applies to
residents and customers between NW 59 Terrace
and NW 104 Terrace that are connected to the City
ofAlachua's, water distribution system.
This Precautionary Boiled Water Notice will
remain in effect until bacteriological testing
demonstrates that there is no presence of
bacteriological contaminates. The City anticipates
this notice will be rescinded by noon on Friday.
Notice of Rescission of the Precautionary Boiled
Water Notice will be posted on the City's website at
www.cityofalachua.com.

HIGH SPRINGS
Following the re-naming of the
gymnasium at High Springs
Community School, the school
proposed a re-dedication
ceremony and extended invites
to community residents who
attended High Springs Middle
School between 1970 and 1990.
The ceremony will take place
on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. in the
gymnasium, honoring Tom
"Pop" Diedeman, the former
principal of High Springs Middle

School during those two decades.
High Springs Elementary School
and High Springs Middle School
merged several years ago to form
High Springs Community
School.
"We're hoping a lot of former
students will show up because
not a lot of people tend to move
away," said Eva Copeland,
assistant principal of
administration.
The gym was originally
named after Diedeman because
he was principal during the
gym's construction.
Recently, letters over the gym

began to fade or fall off, and so
the school commissioned for the
gym to have new letters and
rededicate it to Diedeman,
Copeland said.
At the ceremony. Diedeman
will receive a plaque, prepared
by school teacher Terri Burley
and her husband, Andy.
Guests attending are
welcome to stay for the High
Springs Community School
Hawks basketball game, which
begins at 4:15 p.m. after the
ceremony.

ELECTIONS:

Commission researching options

equipment for an October
election because of presidential
elections in November, said
Newberry City Clerk Gayle
Ponds.
The City's options are to
either provide their own
supplies for a fall election or

move elections to April 2009 if
they want to use the supervisor
of election's machines.
The supervisor of elections
"has been telling us that she can
only accommodate us for so
long," the City's attorney said.
However, the City could

have higher voter turnout if
every community in the county
held elections on the same day,
Mayor John Glanzer said.
But it is difficult for all the
communities to do that because
specialized ballots must be
printed for each community.
In addition, it would cost
$5,000 more to print ballots
with Newberry Commission
nominees on the November
presidential election ballot.

"I don't think that's a good
investment for taxpayer's
money," City Commissioner
Alena Lawson said.
"We need to find out if there
is a possibility of renting
equipment for an election in
October, she said.
* The City Commission will
revisit this issue at the Feb. 25
meeting.

several million dollars, said
Rob Walsh, a representative for
Maronda Homes.
The City Commission
granted the extension, but a
nearby resident said he felt the
developers should be forced to
move on with construction.
"I think six months is a little
long," said Colonial Heights
resident Carl Lee. "It sounds
like they are dragging their
feet."
Although the site is taking a
long time to develop, the extra
time is necessary to make sure
the engineers do not harm
nearby land, said. City
Commissioner Jean
Calderwood.
"I understand Mr. Lee's.
concern," Calderwood said.
"But if the six months means
they are going to get it right,
then I think it would be in all of
our best interests to allow that
to happen."
The time frame is not the
only controversy surrounding
Heather Glenn. Residents of
nearby neighborhoods have
also expressed concern about
additional roads being built to
connect the neighborhoods.
Mayor Gib Coerper asked
the Maronda Homes
representative to clarify their
plans so nearby homeowners
could be informed about the
site.
"Our plan is to not shove
any connection whatsoever
with those adjacent
neighborhoods," Walsh said.
In addition to the time
extension, the City
Commission allowed the
developers to construct the -site
in two phases, instead of the
initially planned three phases.
Walsh said the slow housing
market calls for less
development in the first phase,
and a much larger second
phase.

because the agreement's
reallocation of Lake Lanier's
water supply would create a
major change and was not
authorized by the United States
Congress, the prior decision
would be overturned.
The court's opinion
reaffirmed that if the storage in
the lake is reallocated, it would
have adverse impacts to
Florida's environment,
Secretary Sole said.
Lake Lanier flows into the
Chattahoochee and Flint rivers
that together become
Apalachicola River.
Apalachicola flows through

northern Florida and its bay
provides for 90-percent of
Florida's oysters, Williams
said.
Florida's goal has been to
protect the environment and
economy of the Apalachicola
River, which includes the
seafood and shellfish multi-
million dollar industry,
Williams said.
"Both of those are
important things to protect and
it's still our position."

Florida in protecting water
flows to the Apalachicola
River and the ecosystem,"
Florida Department of
Environmental Protection
(FDEP) Secretary Michael
Sole said.
The case arose after
Alabama and Florida appealed
the earlier decision that
approved a Settlement
Agreement that would have
allowed Georgia to use 20-
percent of the water in the
Lake Lanier reservoir for
municipal and industrial uses
by Georgia residents.
Florida and Alabama
argued that the agreement

Shhhh...it's Valentine's Day

Just kidding it's no secret that today is
Valentine's Day.
If you didn't know, and maybe that's possible
if you spent the last week out of town like
maybe on the moon I'll say it again, today is
Valentine's Day.
If you haven't procured something special for
that special person in your life, you may
be thinking that you're out of luck.
But then again, maybe I can help
you.
Heaven knows you need it.
Nobody wants to be caught on the
short end of such an auspicious occasion .'
of far reaching consequences. I-
It is indeed difficult to imagine a
February without candy, flowers, and
gifts. And all in the name of
St.Valentine, the patron saint of lovers
for whom the day is named.
It can be a day to anticipate or a day .
to fear.
Valentine's Day has been celebrated Ellen
on February 14th for over 1,500 years,
so that would pretty much cover the entire lives
of anyone breathing today. It hasn't been a
Johnny-come-lately to the holiday scene, so that
excuse won't hold water.
Truly, on the day especially set aside for
lovers, there is no excuse that would satisfy a
forgotten mate or significant other.
The best advice is simply not to let that
happen.
And it's not too late to prevent a needless
calamity.

1

February is the month of romance the
month of love.
Or alternatively, the month that will be
remembered as the beginning of the end. ,
There is considerable wisdom in ensuring
that your main squeeze has an enjoyable
Valentine's Day, as opposed to
a miserable one that won't
S. soon be forgotten.
It's not too late to purchase
one of the 188 million
Valentine's Day cards
S exchanged annually, or even
''hand scrawl a love note. Pay
Sno heed that over 50-percent
Share purchased in the six days
prior to the observance,
meaning that you will only be
elbowing 50-percent of the
remainder of the world
Boukar scanning those card racks.
Boukari Math majors will tell us that

procrastinators

such as

yourself will be competing with, .at most, 94
million others desperately trying to save a
sinking ship.
Consider that even at this advanced date, you
can save yourself stress and ensure a romantic
Valentine's Day by spending a lot of money for
last minute flowers or reservations at your
special restaurant if there are any to be had.
Or you could use the following fill-in-the-
blank poem (in your handwriting of course) to
explain why you wouldn't even pop for a dollar
or two and buy a card: Roses are Red, violets are

blue, those store-bought cards aren't good
enough for you.
Good luck with that one.
You could make dinner at home. Just make
sure there is a plentiful supply of chocolate.
Chocolate helps.
So on this special day when sweethearts
honor each other with candy, flowers, and cards,
get off your can and do something for that
valentine in your life.
And by the way, just as Romeos and Juliets
come in all shapes, colors and sizes, so too do
gifts. A gift from the heart, in the form of a few
loving words is appreciated as much, if not more,
than the store-bought paraphernalia. But that
doesn't mean one shouldn't buy something -just
in case.
Take comfort in the fact that February 14th is,
after all, just another day.
And if you buy that, then you deserve what
you get.
And in case you're curious, you may wonder
whatever happened to St. Valentine, the patron
saint that started all this.
The story goes that he was beheaded.
Happy Valentine's Day!

it, don't send it!

nominated by Rick Shafer,
Inventory Control Manager/
FIC Manager of the Alachua
location. Dollar General has
over 80,000 employees, with
more than 600 at the Alachua
-site where Rhodes is employed.
Mary received a plaque
officially recognizing her
contributions in serving others
and it was estimated she had
volunteered for over 520 hours.
She also received a $2,500
financial award given to the
charity of her choice. Rhodes
chose to donate the money to
the Greater New Hope Baptist
Church where she attends
services and volunteers on a
regular basis. She has served
at her church as the
Chairperson of the Trustee
Board for the past seven years
to ensure that the church
facilities are well maintained.
She is also a member of her
church choir, and has also
been the Treasurer for the
choir for,the last 10 years.
According to Shafer,

"Mary genuinely cares for
others and exhibits this quality
by serving elderly members of
the community through
hospital visits, cooking, and
providing spiritual comfort."
This past Thanksgiving,
she opened up her own doors
and provided a full holiday
dinner to those who are less
fortunate. Rhodes has also
been known to provide for
those who cannot provide for
themselves, during the
holidays.
It's hard to imagine that
with all the time Rhodes
contributes to serving others
that she has time for not only
one full time job, but two.
Mary not only works at the
Cycle Counter at Dollar

Shafer added, "Mary is
known for her generous
helping of love for her fellow

ALACHUA BUSINESS CENTER: Awards, Trophies, laminating among services

be doing so after February.
"This really was a natural fit for
Alachua County Today," said Ellen
Boukari, Executive Editor for the
newspaper and one of the company's
owners.
The Alachua County Today office will
offer the same services as Smart Mail, but
will bring them downtown onto the city's
picturesque Main Street. Located across
from Alachua's old police department and
surrounded by many shops and restaurants,
the Alachua Business Center will serve as a
one-stop for area entrepreneurs and
residents.
ABC will offer UPS shipping, copying,
faxing, laminating, business cards, many
U.S. postal services and much more.
Awards, trophies, plaques and banners as
well as other customized promotional items

and products offered
will be among the products olTered by the
Alachua Business Center.
Boukari said she believes that as a one-
stop shop, ABC will create a new draw for
the types of clientele who will frequent
businesses in the downtown area.
"ABC will attract people to Main Street
and will add to the vibrancy of the
downtown area," said Boukari.
Boukari also noted that Alachua Today,
Inc., the parent company of Alachua
County Today, is among only a handful of
businesses which have continuously
operated on Alachua's Main Street for the
last seven years.
Although parking is a concern for
people in larger cities, Boukari says parking
near her office in downtown Alachua is in
abundant supply.
"Located in the Alachua County Today

building, ABC is ideally situated where
parking is readily available directly in front
of the office and just across the street in a
city-owned public parking lot," Boukari
added.
A loading dock in the rear of Alachua
County Today's office will be designated
exclusively for customers with large UPS
packages which is just another way the
Alachua Business Center is aiming to make
customers' transactions quick and
convenient the owner said.
Smart Mail Services, Inc. will continue
operating their office located on U.S.
Highway 441 until the end of the month.
ABC will officially begin services in
Alachua County Today 's office on March 3.

HILLS: At 75, Hills still walks around Alachua

and serves as a commissioner

Boukari and Gunter and
Christine Hirsch.
Hills has been a
commissioner since the 1990s
and is currently serving his
fourth three-year stint in that
position. But the honor
announced Monday comes from
many years of service given by
Hills which goes beyond, and
long predates his role on the
commission.
"There is a lot of Orien that
many never see," said Coerper.
"Many of the enhancements
this city has seen in the last dozen
years have been because of his
work, both public and behind the
scenes."
Lawton Chiles was given the
nickname Walkin' Lawton, after
the now late Governor had
walked across the State of
Florida. Hills seems to have
followed in those footsteps,
known by many in Alachua as
someone who walks around
town and mingles with folks as
he travels from one area to

another.
Alachua is Hills' hometown
and after serving in the military
and going to college, he returned
to the area to become a teacher.
By the 1980s, Hills said he
recognized that there seemed to
be two Alachuas.
"There was the Alachua
where the roads were paved and
there was the other Alachua
where it was all dirt roads," said
Hills.
He got involved in
community politics because of
his desire to see paving on the
east side of Alachua.
"I remember walking up and
down the streets, drawing on a
map to show which way the
water was flowing," he said.
"Back then, there was water
running right into people's
homes.
"They took my maps and
moved things around to keep the
water from people's yards and
front doors."
Over time, Hills found

himself becoming more of a
community activist and worked
with the City of Alachua to
obtain a million dollar loan
which was used to pave the east
side of Alachua, some of the
County Road 2054 area and
some of downtown.
Eventually, Hills figured out
he was being volunteered to sit
on various committees, not the
least of which was Alachua's first
housing committee where he
served with now Commissioner
Jean Calderwood.
Hills spent about 10 years on
Alachua's Planning and Zoning
Board before running alongside
longtime Commissioner James
Lewis.
Today, at 75 years old, Hills
still walks around Alachua and
no longer needs the cane he used
to lean on.
Fellow Lion Ben Boukari
said of Hills, "Every time I see
him, he is doing something for
somebody.

done for us here in this

Monday.
Calderwood commended
Hills for looking out for the
area's youth saying, "He still
looks out for the kids now
serving as a commissioner and
on the school board committee."
Commissioner Bonnie
Burgess jokingly told Hills she
remembered his mother's
barbecue shop and asked if he
knew her recipe.
Lewis said of Hills, "Orien is
one of the best friends I've ever
had."
Watson said he remembered
Hills from his younger days.
"Commissioner Hills and I
go way back.
"1 am proud to serve under
his leadership as a commissioner.
"This is just a small token of
our appreciation for all that
Commissioner Hills has done for
this community," said Watson.
The basketball courts named
in Hills' honor are located in
Alachua's downtown area and
owned by the Alachua Lions
Club. Watson said the City will
be placing a sign at the courts to
mark the occasion.

BEEF 'O' BRADY'S:

Robertson, said he decided to sell the business
after much thought, because he has known
Mccann for several years.
"The fish house has just'not done what I
wanted it to do in the last six months," Robertson
said.
Robertson sold the business and equipment to
Beef 'O' Brady's, but he still owns the land and
building under a five-year lease.
No major remodeling is needed for the Beef
'O' Brady's, but construction crews are currently
painting the building to match
the restaurant style. An arcade
will also be put in one of the
existing rooms for the children.
The restaurant will employ Cji-
about 35 to 45 people, Mccann
said.
The liquor license for Rick's
Fish House will be transferred to
Beef '0' Brady's, but the S --

there be no other candidates
qualifying, Coerper will run
uncontested and automatically
retain his seat.
The election will be held on
April 8 at three polling places
including the Hal Brady
Recreation Center, the Fire
Station and Turkey Creek.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m.
to 7 p.m.
The three-year commission
term will expire in 2011.
Alachua officials hope to
avert a repeat of the 2007
election season when activist
Charles Grapski attempted. to
run for multiple open seats and
took the City to court over that
and other issues.
Alachua City Manager
Clovis Watson, Jr. said, "We are
going to make it clear in the
advertisements for the election
that qualifying documents must
be completely filled out and
returned to the City by the
deadline."
The 2007 election was
called off before it ever began
because the only two qualifying
candidates were incumbent
commissioners Jean

Calderwood and Bonnie
Burgess according to the City
of Alachua. But after going to
court seemed inevitable, the
City relaxed the rules to allow
Grapski and Michael Perkins to
complete the proper filing
documentation. A judge told
Grapski he could not qualify to
run for Calderwood's seat when
he had not originally filed any
documents for that position.
The 2006 election was just
as colorful for the City when
longtime Commissioner James
Lewis was challenged Lewis
Irby. Grapski first became
involved in Alachua's politics
during that election season and
raised numerous objections to
the City's handling of the
process on election night.
Court cases ensued, but were
later tossed out after Judge
Robert Roundtree said resident
Eileen McCoy, Grapski and
others did not file the suit in the
time required by law.
Coerper is currently serving
his second term as a
commissioner.

convenient because it is near the downtown
sports park, City Hall and the center of Alachua.
"Alachua is just a really neat, old town,"
Mccann said. "So far everyone has been fantastic
and welcoming to us, so we're excited about
being there."

ALACHUA COUNTY TODAY RELIGION THiURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2008 B3

Warnings from an Aposde

Join us at these local events

Special to Alachua County Today
People often tend to think that
they are wiser, more powerful, or
more important than they really
are, which is nothing new; pride
and selfish ambition is what
caused Satan to be
cast out of heaven.
In Saint Paul's
second letter to the
Corinthians, his .
words are almost too
unbelievable to be
contained in .,
Scripture, but they
are words more than
timely for our
generation.
"For ye suffer The Ven.
fools gladly, seeing Leasure
ye [yourselves] are All Saints
wise. For ye slufei; Church, G
if a man bring you A parish o
into bondage, if a Christian
man devour [you], if Church
a man take [ofyou],
if a man exalt himself if a man
smite you on the face. I speak as
concerning reproach, as though
we had been weak "
This is another translation
that may make it a little easier to
understand, "For you gladly
bear with fools, being wise
yourselves! For you bear it if a
man makes slaves of you, or
preys upon you, or takes
advantage ofyou, or puts on airs,
or strikes you in the face. To my
shame, I must say, we were too
weak for that!"
What would cause St. Paul to
use these words? How could a
church which is described as
having a wealth of Spiritual gifts,
end up getting this type of
warning from an Apostle?
First of all, Corinth was one
of the greatest cities in the
Roman Empire. There was
wealth, splendor, and lust.
Corinth was .the center of
everything intellectual, but it was
utterly corrupt. Those in the

J

i

E

Church in- Corinth struggled to
live as Christians in the secular
environment that surrounded
them.
Tremendous problems were
created for St. Paul by the
people's lack of
S understanding
about authority in
the Church. They
'*t went astray from
St the beginning,
rejecting the
-1 apostolic authority
of St. Paul. In both
of his letters to the
church in Corinth,
Saint Paul
emphasizes his
ohn E. authority as it came
from "the will of
Anglican God". Men who
ainesville. were not called by
f the God came into the
Episcopal Church and
preached something
other than the
.Gospel. These false apostles
began to lead the Church into a
new man-centered religion.
II Corinthians 11:5, "1 think
that I am not in the least inferior
to these superlative apostles. "
St. Paul describes the
troublemakers by the titles they
gave to themselves- Super-
Apostles. This paints a vivid
picture of someone who is above
the rest, not answering to
anybody. Today, we hear about
such men, who lead hundreds or
thousands to their deaths for the
supposed purpose of God.
St. Paul's portrait is more
exact, "For you bear it if a man
makes slaves of you, or preys
upon you, or takes advantage of
you, or puts on airs, or strikes
you in the face." The arrogance
is evident as they attempt to
elevate themselves to supreme
authority, crushing the will of the
rest of the people. To undermine
the truth put forth by Saint Paul,

the false leaders sideline the truth
and attack the person. Once truth
is ignored and something else is
the focus of the issue, the battle is
nearly over.
The Doctrine associated with
these 'Super Apostles' is found in
II Corinthians 11:4: "For ijfsome
one comes and preaches another
Jesus than the one we preached,
or if you receive a different spirit
from the one you received, or if
you accept a different gospel
fvom the one you accepted, you
submit to it readily enough. "
The person and work of Jesus
Christ is at the heart of
Christianity. What we believe
about the Incarnation, His death,
resurrection and ascension is not
trivial. It is the test of orthodoxy,
and we have received the
teaching of the Apostles, the
Fathers, and the Creeds as our
testimony to our Faith. Anyone
who comes preaching another
'Jesus' is a deceiver and must be
rejected.
This is why it is so important
to understand the history, nature,
and authority of the Church
which was established by Jesus
Christ and handed down to the
Apostles, who in turn handed it
down to faithful men. This
'Apostolic Succession' idea is
not something which we preserve
for the sake of tradition. Faithful
men have always handed down
the faith of the Fathers to faithful
men, and while this may not
prevent the possibility of a few
going astray, we can always find
our bearings in the unbroken
succession-the chain leading
from the anchor to the ship. Our
defense is sure ifv e put our trust
in the Word of God as handed
down from the Apostles to their
successors.
The nature and purpose of a
true minister is to determine the
true meaning of the Word of God
and to proclaim it so that the

people may understand and draw
nearer to Christ.
We soon will begin the
season of Lent, a time of
preparation and renewal. It is a
time for all of us to search our
hearts and minds, drawing nearer
to Christ by drawing further from
the temptations of the world.

"10 lor Teacher$" provides SunState Federal
Credit Union loan recipients with a $10 voucher
good at the Gainesville Newbenry Road Office
Depot lor every loan made by the credit union. The
vouchers are then to be given to a favorite teacher or
school and can be redeemed by anyone with a valid
school board ID. This program will go into effect on
March 1 and applies to all SunState loans, excluding
Visa products. Robert Hart, Vice President -
Marketing for SunState, estimates approximately
$40,000 in vouchers will be generated the first year
the program is in place. The vouchers are good for
six months from the date they are issued and may be
used singly or in groups. Office Depot store coupons
may be used with the vouchers.
"10 for Teacher$" is not SunState's first
involvement with schools in the area. For several
years, SunState Federal Credit Union has sponsored
Writing and Art initiatives in Columbia County
schools. In February, the credit union is planning to
open a branch office inside Fort White High School.
"At SunState, we believe our

public school system is the
foundation of how our
communities are defined. We also
believe teachers are more often
than not unsung heroes and
significant guardians of our youth.

When we can, we want to do more than just sponsor
signs and buy yearbook ads we want to really
make a difference. "10 for Teacher$" is a way
SunState members can get in on the action and show
their appreciation directly to the teachers' and
schools," I lart said. "It's common knowledge that
teachers, especially teachers making a difference,
take money out of their own pockets to buy
classroom supplies. What better way for our
members to show a teacher their appreciation than to
hand them what amounts to a 10 dollar bill?"'
A kick off event for the program will take place
at the Office Depot location on Newberry Road
(6861 W. Newberry Rd) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
March 1. Teachers and School Board Members are
invited to bring their school board ID to take part in
prize drawings and pizza."

Ludwig's Angi
Q: What is Ludwig's
angina?
A: Ludwig's angina is the
name for a severe bacterial
infection that occurs in the floor
of the mouth, under the tongue,
and causes swelling that could
block the airway. It often occurs
after a person has hand an
infection around the roots of the
teeth, like an abscess, or after a
trauma, like a blow to the mouth.
Symptoms may include pain,
swelling and redness of the neck,
fever, fatigue and, in emergency
cases, difficulty in breathing.
There may also be earache and,
because the blockage prevents
the swallowing of saliva,
drooling. Swelling can

-ina?

sometimes come on quite
quickly.
Antibiotics, usually penicil-
lin or a penicillin-like drug,
constitute the standard course of
treatment. For a severe case, in
which swelling begins to close
the airway, it may be necessary
to insert a breathing tube through
the mouth or nose directly to the
lungs, or to perform a trache-
otomy, which means surgically
creating an opening in the neck
for insertion of a breathing tube.
Regular visits to the dentist
and prompt treatment of any
infection in the mouth can
prevent the infection that leads
to the Ludwig's angina. Talk
with your dentist about ways to
prevent infection in your mouth.
