.W HOW WEIRD
IS THAT?!
SEAN MCCARTHY
Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to
be true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because it's
online doesn't mean it's
true!
Boy fakes kidnapping to
hide bad grades
From news.aol.com: An
11-year-old boy got high
marks in storytelling after
staging a hoax to cover up
his bad grades.
Police said the boy faked
his kidnapping to avoid
bringing home a bad report
card, saying a man with a
pistol snatched him after he
left Ed White Middle
School.
The boy said the man
forced him into a "beat-up
car" and threatened to kill
him.
The student said he
escaped by jumping out of
the car but wasn't able to
grab his book bag, which
contained the report card.
He ran to his grandpar-
ents' house and later
confessed to lying. His
grandfather called police to
apologize. Sgt. Mark
Roberts said police were
suspicious the boy was able
to "escape" with his band
instrument, but not his
book bag.
The boy faces no charges
at this time.

Proposed electric rates
still shock public
By Jessica Tuggle
jtuggle@hometownnewsol.com
VERO BEACH The Vero
Beach City Council unanimously
approved an 18 percent rate
increase for wastewater services
and a 7.5 percent increase for
water during the Sept. 15 meet-
ing.
The rate changes will go into
effect beginning in October, city
officials said.
Before the meeting, the council
was supposed to approve or dis-
approve a wastewater increase of
29.5 percent, but at the urging of
council members, sewer and
water director Rob Bolton came
up with a slightly different rate
increase timeline.
Instead of paying a 29.5 percent
increase in October, while electric
rates are still high, he proposed
the amount only increase 18 per-
cent now, and 18 percent in April.
The council approved the rate
change 4-1 with Vice Mayor Tom
White dissenting.
The other hot
topic increase,
electric rates, will
be discussed and
voted on in
November, but
citizens made
their concerns kniut in I, i,.H
council during the meeting.
City and county residents out-
lined their concerns for more
than an hour in the packed meet-
ing chambers.
Among
them: damage the increases
would do to seniors living on
fixed income and young families

GIFFORD Free social, recre-
ational, educational and informa-
tional programs for seniors have
been hit this year by budget cuts, a
clear reflection of the hurting
economy.
Seniors from around the county
have come to count on the Gifford
Youth Activity Center's free senior
adult programs to help them meet
new people and continue learning,
but budget constraints mean the
classes may no longer be free, cen-
ter directors said.
"United Way provided the bulk of
the funding for our programs, then
we would offset with our own
funds and fundraisers," said
Angelia Perry, executive director.
"We operate with a budget of
about $50,000 and that's now been
cut by a little over two-thirds. We're
grateful to get any support, but we
are going to have to look at our
options," she said.
The Beyond Special K programs
are specifically designed with sen-
iors in mind, said Theresa Baxter,
senior program coordinator.
Computer classes teach senior
students how to use Microsoft
Word, send and receive e-mail and
use attachments.
"We have four computer classes
and they are normally all full," said
Ms. Baxter.
"There is a real interest in learn-
ing how to use the computer
because their grandkids are saying
'Grandma, you've got to learn how
to do this,' and they want to learn
how to do things on the Internet
and not be left out," she said.
Other activities include a popu-
lar two-day-a-week exercise class
that averages 45 people.
"It's a low-impact aerobics class
led by Larry Staley and they play
gospel music and have a great
time. They are always getting new
people," said Ms. Baxter.
Also during the week there is a
Bible study and quilting/sewing
class, she said.
Seniors also get together to go on
field trips, such as to the movies or
shopping.
Ms. Perry said the programs
offered at the center are valuable to
seniors because it encourages
them to get out of the house, make
friends and continue learning, if
they so choose.
"We have one senior that comes
to pretty much everything that we
offer. She's here all the time and she
said that if she didn't have the pro-
grams, she'd be sitting in her house
going crazy," Ms. Perry said.
"The variety of activities we offer
allow them to continue to enjoy life
as they get older. Grandma wasn't
always 80 years old, you know," Ms.
Perry added.
Every few months, Ms. Baxter
also organizes an intergenerational
activity to encourage positive sen-
ior adult interaction with children
and teens.
"We had a special activity where
the kids got to bake with the sen-

APPRAISALS
Occasionally a customer
will come in and ask for an
appraisal on a piece they
already own, or will want an
appraisal done on a piece that
they are purchasing. An
appraisal could be requested
for one of these reasons:
Insurance: The most com-
mon type, insurance
appraisals usually include
both the value of the piece on
which to base the premium
costs to insure against loss,
and the cost of replacing the
piece at current retail market
values. Estate or antique
pieces being appraised for
insurance replacement can
be tricky, and require special
expertise.
Private Resale: This is an
estimate of what the customer
would be likely to get if selling
the jewelry to another private
person (not a retailer). It is
likely to be lower than insur-
ance replacement costs but
higher than probate value.
Probate or estate taxes:
This is an estimate of what
the items would be likely to
bring in at auction of the
owner died. It is usually sub-
stantially lower than insurance
replacement values.
Collateral: When an owner
wants to put up security
against a bank or institutional
loan, the appraisal gives an
estimate of what the items
would bring in if they had to
be sold by the lender at a
future date to cover the loan.
It is usually about the same or
lower than probate value.

Man accused of trading
dad's car for $50 in crack
From fresnobee.com:
Authorities arrested a man
they said tried to trade his
father's car for $50 worth of
crack cocaine.
Deputies arrested the 39-
year-old man after his 74-
year-old father reported his
Lincoln stolen.
When deputies arrived at
the father's home, they saw
the son walking up the
street. They determined the
car had been sold for drugs.
Deputies later saw some-
one else driving the Lin-
coln, and pulled it over. The
driver fled the moving car,
which hit two parked cars.
Deputies caught the
driver, who was arrested on
suspicion of evading an
officer and resisting arrest.
The son was arrested on
suspicion of car theft.
Authorities did not release
the names of those
involved.

From sfgate.com: Ruth
Day, a 64-year-old retiree
from northern England,
had the day of her life on
the golf course last week.
Day managed to shoot two
holes-in-one in the same
round atWhitley Bay Golf
Club, where she is a mem-
ber.
"A hole in one in itself is
usually pretty amazing,"
Day said in "The Journal," a
newspaper in northeast
England, "but I couldn't
believe it when I did the
same thing 10 holes further
on."
Day shot her first ace on
the 149-yard third hole on
Sept. 9. She added the
second on the 161-yard
13th.
Day said she has been
playing golf for about 10
years.

Car worker's woes
First, our government gives billions to General
Motors (or should it be called government motors?)
because it is "too big to fail" and then the company
announces massive layoffs of U.S. workers.
Now, to make Americans look like first-class suckers,
the company is investing in a major Chinese-govern-
ment owned automaker and is going to make trucks in
China to take advantage of lower wages paid to Chinese
workers who are the winners in this outrage.
According to George
George Washington was not only a strong leader, he
was also a thoughtful and wise man. We would be wise
to listen to and heed his counsel.
He once said,
"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is
force; like a troublesome servant and a fearful master.
Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible
action."
A positive side?
When politicians say we need government-run
health care, they often fail to acknowledge the U.S. has
made huge investments in infrastructure in the sci-
ences.
Because of this, we enjoy the benefits of world-domi-
nant health care research, which results in better drugs
and delivery systems. America's first-class biotech
industry, developed under current market-based eco-
nomics, provides massive advantages over the govern-
ment burdened Europeans and Canadians.
Take a look at Massachusetts
Congress is considering several hair-brained
schemes for government-run health care, but it should
be looking at the experience of Massachusetts, which
has mandated universal coverage.
Patients must now wait for a doctor's appointment
for an average of 100 days. Students are discouraged
from careers in medicine and primary care physicians
are becoming discouraged.
Wise words?
Plato said it and we should listen.
"The people have always some champion whom they
set over them and nurse into greatness. This and no
other is the root from which a tyrant springs; when he
first appears he is a protector."
True then, true now?
"No man's life, liberty or property is safe while the
legislature is in session."
Mark Twain said it years ago. It is still true today.
Auto outrage
When purchasing an automobile, Americans face the
prospect of being forced to choose between vehicles
which are smaller, lighter, less safe and more expen-
sive. We can thank President Obama, his Department of
Transportation and the Environmental Protection
Agency for these very limited and unpleasant choices.
As the government moves to take over more of the
auto industry, bureaucrats admit the new proposed
rules will add $600 to the price of the average car.
It is up to us to protest this outrage before the gov-
ernment's new regulations go into effect.

Indians score another win
Cliff Partlow/staff photographer
Fort Pierce Westwood's Khiry Lockwood (No. 8), left, and Wonderful Terry (No. 5) try to no avail to prevent Vero

Updating Windows now or later
Every time a new
operating system gets
released, we go
through the same process,
and the questions don't
seem to change much.
The most often asked
question seems to be,
"Should I upgrade now?"
My answer at this point is
to wait.
In the mid 1990s,
Microsoft went from
Windows 3.1 (a graphical
"shell" that sat on top of the
real operating system at that
time, DOS) to Windows 95,
and people asked the same
thing.
Then again, in the late
1990s, we went from
Windows 95 toWindows 98
and got flooded with the
same question.
Shortly after that we went
fromWindows 98 to Win-
dows ME (remember that
one?) and the pattern
repeated itself.
Next came Windows 2000,
Windows XP, Vista and now,
finally, Windows 7 is set to
release in October.
It seems people always
want to jump on the
bandwagon and upgrade as
soon as a new operating
system is released. My
answer is always the same:
"No, not yet. Wait a bit."
COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
So why is that?
My reasoning lies in the
fact that when these new
operating systems are
released, they are not quite
finished yet. We need to give
them some time to work out
the bugs.
Let me explain.
Whenever a new operat-
ing system is released, it has
gone through extensive
testing at Microsoft and for
all intents and purposes, is
finished.
The problem is, it's pretty
much impossible to test a
program as big as an
operating system in every
conceivable configuration
with every piece of hardware
out there and make sure it's
able to manage every piece
of software people are liable
to try to run.
So, what do they do?
They get the new software
running as best they can
and then make it available
to the public.
Then, over the course of
the next year or so, they take
all of the most commonly
reported problems and
release patches or "service
packs" that fix whatever
issues they were able to
figure out.
The process continues
with users reporting
problems (minor glitches all
the way up to serious show-
stopping errors) and
engineers correcting
problems and publishing
fixes in additional service
packs and updates.
The first people who run
the new operating system
get to be the guinea pigs and
that's just how it's always
been.
With that in mind, the
next question I am usually
asked is when to upgrade.
I advise people to give it at
least a year or more after the
release. Let someone else do
the testing, especially if you
rely on your machine to get
your work done.
The last thing I want to do
is get interrupted by
unexpected errors that no
one has an answer for yet
while trying to get some
work done.
By giving it a year or so,
you give the engineers time
to stabilize the software and,
hopefully, correct most of
the major errors that made it
out in the initial release.
Another thing to consider
is that the current stable
operating system (in this
case XP; don't even ask me
about Vista) has already
gone through this refining
process and is usually pretty
rock solid by now.
That's an important
consideration to keep in
mind, especially if you use
your machine for important
tasks.
Does this mean I don't
recommend anyone switch
to the new operating system
at this time?
No, we need someone to
run the system or how will
they ever work out the bugs?
If you are a casual
computer user and don't
rely on your machine for
important "critical" tasks, or
if you can afford to risk
rendering your machine
unusable for a bit, while you
troubleshoot and correct
some weird problem no one
has seen before, then go for
it.
Someone has to do it,
right?

The return of the H1N1 virus
his year there are two
types of flu to think
about.
Last week I wrote about
seasonal flu and this week
I'll discuss novel influenza
A, the correct name for the
H1N1 or swine flu.
H1N1 is in the news
again because experts are
concerned as the weather
gets colder, it will re-
emerge at the same time
the seasonal flu appears.
The H1N1 flu is known to
many as swine flu because
lab tests showed the genes
in this virus resembled
those of flu viruses that
occur in pigs in North
America.
However, and this is
important, it is different in
many ways. Right now, the
CDC says "there is no
evidence that swine in the
United States are infected
with this new virus."
While influenza viruses
can spread back and forth
between pigs and people,
H1N 1 is not spread by food.
You cannot get this virus
from eating pork.
The H1N1 virus is spread
from human to human in
ALIVE
S &WELL
SHELLEY KOPPEL
the same way seasonal flu
spreads. The CDC recom-
mends some common-
sense precautions to lessen
the risk you or your family
will contract H1N1:
*Wash your hands. This
is the single most impor-
tant preventive measure for
this flu, seasonal flu and
the common cold. Use soap
and water or an alcohol-
based hand sanitizer and
be especially mindful after
you cough or sneeze. Wash
for 15-20 seconds.
Avoid touching your
eyes, nose or mouth. Germs
spread that way.
Try to avoid contact
with sick people. If you are
sick, be a good neighbor
and stay home until you are
symptom-free for 24 hours.
Keep kids home if they are
sick.
Cover your mouth with
a tissue when you cough or
sneeze and throw the tissue
away. Then wash your
hands.
If you live in an area
where cases of H1N1 have
been reported, and you
have flu-like symptoms,
contact your health care
provider.
There are new recom-
mendations for vaccination
against the swine flu, when
the vaccination becomes
available this fall.
The CDC recommends
vaccinating the following
high-risk populations:
pregnant women, who seem
particularly sensitive to this
strain of flu; people who live
with or care for children
younger than 6 months;
health care and emergency
medical personnel; children
and young adults between 6
months and 24 years; and
people 25-64 who have
chronic health disorders.
The H1N1 flu doesn't
seem to target older people
in the way seasonal flu
does, but if you or a loved
one of any age has difficulty
breathing, fever and a rash
or cough, severe persistent
vomiting or confusion, seek
immediate medical atten-
tion.
There is no cause for
panic. Unless there are
widespread outbreaks,
there are no plans to close
schools or places or busi-
ness. However, just as we
listen to the hurricane
reports during hurricane
season, it's a good idea to
listen to the news and
follow public health
recommendations should
cases come to the Treasure
Coast.
Shelley Koppel is unable
to endorse specific treat-
ments for disease. Any
protocols for treatment or
testing she discusses are
accepted standards of
medical practice as recom-
mended by agencies such as
the American Academy of
Pediatrics or the American
Cancer Society. When she
draws from personal
experience, those are her
experiences and are not
medical recommendations.
She is the former editor of
"Today's HealthCare"
magazine and a member of

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
- Government officials will
go up against local celebrities
in a charity softball game on
Nov. 14 at historic Dodger-
town.
Every Dream Has A Price, a
nonprofit that builds and ren-
ovates homes for community
members in need, is putting
on the game and subsequent
hip-hop concert as a
fundraiser to subsidize the
cost of building a new house
inVero Beach.
The house will be built on
one of the county surplus lots
granted to the nonprofit earli-
er this year.
"This is the first fundraiser
that we've ever had to do
because when we've done
other projects, everything has
been donated," said Julianne
Price, one of EDHAP's direc-
tors.
"In these tough economic
times, we are not able to build
houses in that way, as many
of our tradespeople and busi-
nesses are struggling to keep
their businesses open right
now. So, we're doing our first
fundraiser in a big way by
having this event at Holman
Stadium," she explained.
The game will begin at 5
p.m. and will be five innings
long. Following the softball
game will be a performance
with hip-hop artist Tay Dizm.
Tickets for the game will be
$20 and sold at local outlets
and on the Every Dream Has
A Price Web site, Ms. Price
said.
"All proceeds from this
event will go toward building
a house on our lot at 4218
25th Ave., Vero Beach. If we
can raise enough money, we'd
like to build the house in one
weekend," she said.
Among the confirmed
players are Commissioner
Peter O'Bryan, Vero Beach
city manager Jim Gabbard,
the Rev. Buddy Tipton of Cen-
tral Assembly of God in Vero
Beach and Alastair Kennedy
ofVero Beach. Commissioner
Bob Solari will be an umpire.
Florida Sen.-elect Joe
Negron has also confirmed
that he will play in the softball
game.
Sponsors for the event are
needed, as are volunteers to
help park cars and clean up
after the event, she said.
Ms. Price said she is very
excited about the event and
hopes to have a big crowd.
"I'm really looking forward
to the whole community
coming together and having a
good time to raise money,"
she said.

Is your garden ready for fall?
oon we will be enjoying
the wonderful fall
temperatures Florida is
famous for. If you're trying
to decide on what you
might want to plant, why
not try some roses.
Roses are beautiful,
flowering plants that
represent love and friend-
ship. Roses are a perfect
addition to your friendly tea
garden. These lovely plants
are surprisingly easy to grow
with some basic TLC.
Roses can be successfully
planted in either containers
or in the ground. In either
case, the plants should be in
well-drained soil in a sunny
location. If you plant your
treasures in the ground, be
sure the soil drains well. Dig
a hole about 15- to 18-
inches wide and 18-inches
deep. Put a layer of gravel
on the bottom of the hole.
This is to allow drainage so
water drains away from the
root system. The same
would apply if you plant
your roses in a container.
Next, prepare the soil you
are going to use to plant
your roses. Use a mix of a
good-quality potting soil
with around half the
mixture composed of
organic matter, such as
mulch or peat. You can also
use some bone meal with
your soil mixture.
Now, it's finally time to
plant your prize. Carefully
remove the plant from its
original container. Place the

plant in your prepared hole,
so the top of soil layer on
the plant is the same level as
the surrounding soil. Fill the
gap underneath the plant
with your prepared soil
mixture.
Now, fill the gaps around
the remaining parts of the
plant and pack down lightly.
You are now ready to water
in your newly planted rose.
Once you have your roses
planted and bursting with
color, you will need to do
some basic maintenance in
order to keep them lush and
colorful.
Since we live in such a
humid climate, certain
diseases, such as black
powdery mildew and black
spot, can be problems. Both
diseases are much easier to
control if you prevent them
from happening in the first
place.
Once established, both
are very difficult to get rid
of. Although there are many
products on the market that
are used for disease control
on roses, Orthenex reigns as
king. The product controls
not only diseases, but also
controls insect infestation
as well.
If you are interested in an
all-natural cure for fungus
how about baking soda?
That's right, baking soda.
Plain ordinary baking soda
added at the rate of 3
teaspoons per gallon of
water. You then can add a
small amount of mild dish
detergent to the mix to act
as a spreader sticker.
This will work as a
preventive measure, but will
not work well if an infection
is present. Be sure not to
make your mix too strong,
as damage to your roses
could result.
Roses are heavy feeders
and like a good supply of
food. You should feed your
roses once a month with a
good-quality, commercial
rose food. Always follow
label directions carefully.
Also, please do not put
your plants in the line of fire
of your sprinkler systems, as
this keeps your leaves wet
which can cause some of
the fungus diseases
described above.

Art museum to feature photography exhibit
By Barbara Yoresh
Entertainment writer
VERO BEACH Since
the Civil War, Americans
have valued photograph-
ic images that freeze
special moments in time.
But whether the image
is an early daguerreo-
type, a Polaroid instant
snapshot or a digital
photo, subject matter, as
well as the image-making
process has always been
fascinating to viewers.
The Vero Beach Muse-
um of Art will present a
special photographic
exhibit from Sept. 26
through Dec. 27 that
melds both creative
talents.
SANCTUARY: Anna
Tomczak Photography
features uniquely com-
posed large format
photographs in an
exhibition of 30 works.
The exhibition will be
on view in the museum's
Schumann Gallery and
offered free of charge to
all museum visitors.
This photography is
most assuredly not
another example of
someone's Kodak
moment, however.
Ms. Tomczak earned a
bachelor of arts degree in
theater arts and film
from Pennsylvania State
University and a master
of fine arts in fine art
photography from the
University of Florida. She
teaches workshops and
classes at various univer-
sities, museums and
studios throughout
America and abroad and
has been awarded three
artist support grants
from Polaroid to use its
rare 20-inch by 24-inch
camera system, with
which she creates
Polaroid image transfers
used in her creative
compositions.
Ms. Tomczak makes
her home in Lake Helen,
Fla., and her "SANCTU-
ARY" exhibit showcases
actual photographs from
a 76-page book of her
'Equua, Protea' by Anna Tomczak.
works by the same name
that was published in
Turin, Italy.
While her works are,
indeed, photographic
prints, they are artistical-
ly assembled in a still-life
collage that renders them
with the look of shim-
mering watercolor
paintings.
The assembled images
contain a montage of
subjects with very
personal or symbolic
meaning. Some have an
antique of floral compo-
nent while other objects

evoke memories, history
or other thought-provok-
ing images.
Ms. Tomczak herself
admits to being an avid
collector of "iconic
treasures" and found
objects, which find their
way into her photograph-
ic compositions along
with people, animals and
an unending list of other
subjects.
The rarely used
Polaroid large format
transfer process "lends a
tactile quality to the
photo imagery and a
one-of-a-kind work on
paper," she said.
The dyes from the
photo negative are
infused into special
papers used for watercol-
ors.
Her work is renowned
world-wide and her
photographs have been
exhibited in many
museums.
Ms. Tomczak also
conducts master artist
workshops throughout
the nation and world.

Arians are very high spirited.
You take on the greatest
challenges and usually
emerge victorious because
of the strong focus you give
the top priorities. You keep
your eye on the goal. This
unparalleled energy and
drive pushes you on to suc-
cess. With a keenly honed
purpose and edge like this,
there is no stopping you.
Taurus-April 20-May 20
Attention to details contin-
ues to bring positive results.
Sometimes it is a challenge
to find continuing motivation
and goal setting and still take
care of details. The solution
is to work off a priority list or
delegate to trusted friends
and helpers. Wait for signs
that it is time to act. This will
raise your success ratio a lot.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
The whole idea is to pace
yourself when working on
different projects so that you
have something left at the
end besides burnout. Live a
moderate life. You don't
have to do everything. You
are so strong. You will be
tested on faith and patience
in the universe. You are up
for it. Sometimes less is
more, you know.
Cancer-June 22-July 22
Your sense of family and
responsibility are legend. You
are the best. Why is this so?
It's called heart. Only love
and deep feelings live in your
heart and spirit. However,
you must also set limits so
your spirit works well. Tell
the truth. Say no when you
don't want to do certain
things and you will see
respect grow.
Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
Now is the time to carry our
new plans. First, fine tune
your life. Get rid of clutter.
Then hone your skills to a
razor-sharp edge. This plan
will move you forward like a
sea of energy and bring oth-
ers into your arena who
want to help and just love
being around you. Continue
to let your strong spirit lead
you. Never give up.
Virgo-Aug. 23-Sept. 22

and desires? Unless you
know, how can you expect
anyone else to make you
happy? Make yourself happy

So You Think You Can Dance?
Kids & Teenagers Take Note
By Hannah Hussamy .
When I first entered the t"
Royal Ballroom, I was immedi- .e Ro al a.m i
ately drawn into its fun envi-
ronment and authentic feel.
When I spoke with owners and ,
nationally ranked dancers Asya_
and Oleg Dimitrov, I got a taste .
of ballroom dancing and all it a
has to offer. Asya and Oleg
have competed all over the .
globe, from New York, to South
Africa, to their native Bulgaria,
where they held a televised
nationwide competition. Their La-
expertise in all areas of ballroom dancing led them to open the Royal Ballroom here in Vero Beach.
In mid-September, the Royal Ballroom will begin a series of group classes for teenagers and chil-
dren, equipping them with poise and skill that will allow them to enter competition if they so choose.
Lessons will focus on jive, cha cha, samba, waltz, and quickstep.
The weekly classes will be divided into appropriate age groups: 5-7 year-olds; 8-12 year-olds;
and teenagers, aged 13-18. Registration is now open through September 25 for all classes, with an open
house on September 18th and 25th from 4 PM to 6 PM. Private lessons are also available.
According to Asya, ballroom dancing has been proven to exercise both the body and mind, along
with various other benefits such as social skills, confidence, and impeccable manners. She explained that
other types of dancing, such as ballet and jazz,
can promote good posture "but not the real relationship with another dancer on the floor or the social
interaction that ballroom dancing offers." Asya and Oleg truly believe in the importance of ballroom
dance at a young age, in order to give young people the opportunity to grow in their dancing skills while
learning valuable social lessons along the way.
Teens and children aren't the only ones who can get involved at the Royal Ballroom. The studio
is open to all ages, spreading the gift of dance throughout Vero Beach. Asya and Oleg both agree that
dancing is "always going to be a part of life." "Whether at a wedding, a prom, or even on a business trip,
ballroom allows people to be seen in a different way," says Asya. "Dancing can attract people. It's a skill
that is greatly needed in life."
I really encourage you to stop by the Royal Ballroom and have a chat with Asya and Oleg. They
will bring the art of dance into your life, where it will stay for many years to come. To find out more about
Asya and Oleg's new program for teens and children or their dance lessons for adults, call the Royal
Ballroom's 24-hour hotline at 772-299-5722 and check our website at www.dancevero.com. The Royal
Ballroom is located in K- Mart Plaza off US Highway 1 in Vero Beach. A Paid Advertisement

first. Only you know what is truly right for
you. Let your heart guide you in the right
timing for action on your dreams. Trust the
prompting of your inner desires. It is your
greatest truth.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct.22
Set healthy, productive boundaries for your-
self and work within them to the fullest.
Refuse to allow yourself to be pushed past
what is acceptable for your greater and
higher good. However, be flexible and open
to change. It's OK to bend when needed,
just don't break. Let your strong conscience
guide you.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Release non-essential things from your life
to make room for new and better ones
coming in. There are only so many produc-
tive hours in a day. Work eight, sleep eight
and use the other eight to do the necessary
things for your life that keep you healthy,
informed, relaxed and in balance. Yours is a
good life well lived.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Courage in the face of adversity is your
strongest virtue. Many quit or give up in the
face of adversity. You keep on keeping on.
This ability of psyching yourself up each day
is what keeps you fresh and focused. It
drives the blues away before they take away
your happiness. Now your day is a big suc-
cess. Yeah!
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Act decisively on your immediate goals. You
are on the edge of unprecedented growth.
It's like, "I've done my work, it's time to play."
Now we're talking. This is healthy and truth-
ful. Keep on honing your visionary skills. The
vision comes first, then creative manifesta-
tion. These are the stepping stones to true
happiness.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
One of your greatest strengths is to dream
and then follow through and create the
vision. Stick to the basics. Hone them and
try new ideas. You have true magic in your
spirit like few others. Your love of beauty
and balance carries you on when lesser
earthly distractions try to sidetrack you. It's
your age, you know. Inspire us.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
You grow in spirit every day. Why? Because
of your great, sweet heart. Your inner
strength and beauty is a light for everyone
around you. Continue to strengthen your
resolve, no matter what the earthly side
throws in your path. You can do it. Shed the
old, embrace the new and reach for the
stars. It's your destiny.

A recipe for one amazing cake
Hello, smart shoppers.
The holidays are
around the corner,
so I must repeat this
amazing cake for special
occasions in both the
original and the low-fat
version.
I found the recipe in a
magazine when I was a
teenager. It was so intrigu-
ing I saved it. Years later, I
made it for my father's
birthday. The fact that he
didn't like cake in any shape
or form didn't enter the
picture. He apologized, but
wouldn't even taste it. Dad
passed away 19 years ago,
his birthday was Feb. 16.
My granddaughter
Christy, another one who
doesn't like cake, requested
it for her birthday. She was
forewarned and promised
she would eat it, which she
did. While her birthday is in
January, we didn't get to
celebrate it until Feb. 16, her
great grandfather's birthday.
Happy birthday, great
grandpoppy!
This cake is a project, but
for a special occasion, you
can just count on the
applause. Enjoy, see you
next week.
This cake is large and

WHIPPED CREAM
Whipped cream is
extremely tricky to catch it
just right before it turns to
butter. Use 2 tablespoons
confectioner's sugar to 2
cups heavy whipping
cream.
Use a high narrow bowl.
Chill bowl and beaters.
Using an electric mixer, beat
at high speed until frothy.
Add sugar and continue
beating, watching the cream
very carefully. It will start to
thicken. Continue beating,
scraping bowl occasionally.
The cream is whipped when
it starts to have a slight
"break-up" look. Over-
beating by just a few
seconds will suddenly turn
it into butter. It will become
a mass with water around it.
This makes enough to
frost two 8- to 9-inch layers.

Gearing up for an annual favorite, the Mara Classic
Football season is finally
here! To many of us this
means weekends spent
in our favorite recliner with
remote in one hand and a
cold beverage in another, but
to the Cancer Alliance of Help
and Hope of Palm Beach
County, it means the annual
Tim Mara Celebrity Golf Clas-
sic is right around the corner.
Celebrating its 14th year,
the classic is a two-day event
taking place Oct. 18-19 at PGA
National Resort & Spa in Palm
Beach Gardens.
The event will begin that
Sunday evening with a cock-
tail reception, dinner and auc-
tion beginning at 6 p.m., and
will continue Monday, morn-
ing with a "Best 2-ball of Five-
some" golf tournament that
begins 8:30 a.m. after a hearty
continental breakfast.
Last year, a full field partici-
pated in this annual tourna-
ment held in memory of Tim
Mara, former co-owner of the
NFL's New York Giants who
died in 1995 from Hodgkin's
disease. Mara spent many

years as a Jupiter resident,
philanthropist and owner of
the town's Super Sunday
Restaurant.
Sunday's cocktail reception
attendees will have the oppor-
tunity to mix and mingle with
present and former profes-
sional sports celebrities,
including George Martin, this
year's recipient of the Joe Mor-
rison Memorial Giants Good
Guy Award. The award will be
presented to the former
Giants all-pro defensive end
by his former coach and
Miami Dolphins football
director Bill Parcells, the 2008
award honoree.
Martin, a 13 year star for the
New York Giants, gained
national attention in the past
year when he walked from the
George Washington Bridge in
New Jersey to San Diego,
some 3,000 miles, to raise
awareness to the plight of the
Sept. 11 World Trade center
responders who have dealt
with medical expenses not
covered by their insurance.
Martin's heroic efforts raised
$2.5 million.
The event will feature
celebrities galore, including
Major League Baseball Hall of
Fame member, and my
favorite player of all time,
Mike Schmidt. Joining him
will be Football Hall of Fame
members Lawrence Taylor,
Joe Namath, along with for-
mer football stars Leonard
Marshall, Tucker Frederick-
son, Don Nottingham, Dale
Dawson, Bill Swain and Erich
Barnes.
Port St. Lucie's own slugger
for the St. Louis Cardinals,
Rick Ankiel, along with retired
baseball greats Jim Kaat and
Keith Hernandez, and the
NBA's Richie Guerin will tee it
up as well.
Participants in the golf tour-
nament will compete for first-
, second- and third-place
awards, as well as the longest
drive and closest to the pin.
Included, will be on-course
beverages, tournament sou-
venirs, a tournament tote bag,
and more awards and prizes.
Following golf, an awards
luncheon will be held at PGA
National Resort & Spa Golf
Club, where there will also be
fabulous raffle items, as well
as a silent auction.
Proceeds from this event
benefit the Cancer Alliance of
Help and Hope
(www.cahh.org), a grassroots,
volunteer-governed charita-
ble organization dedicated to
improving the quality of life of
local individuals and their
families touched by cancer.
The organization provides
need-based financial assis-
tance, information resources
and access to services and
support groups in the com-
munity.
The center helps with nor-
mal everyday living expenses,
such as rent, utilities, insur-
ance and other expenses.
Patients are referred by cancer
centers, other nonprofits,
oncologists and a variety of
agencies and individuals.
Event chairmen for the Tim
Mara Memorial Celebrity Golf
Classic are: Joe Healey, Ed
Croke, Ryan Witkowski,
Charles Fischer and Tucker
Frederickson.
Registration is $250 per
golfer and includes a ticket to
Sunday evening's festivities. If
you'd like to attend just the
Sunday dinner and cocktail
event or just Monday's lunch-
eon, tickets are available for
$75 each.

tact Healey at (561) 719-0311
