SHOW WEIRD
IS THAT?!
SEAN MCCARTHY

S pend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to
be true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because it's
online doesn't mean it's
true!
From msnbc.msn.com:
Woman lay dead in bed for
eight months
The body of an elderly
woman remained in her
bed for up to eight months
even though caretakers
paid daily visits to the
house and kept it tidy,
authorities said.
New Hanover County
District Attorney Benjamin
David told a news confer-
ence that a concealment of
death charge would be
filed against a family
member, although he
declined to identify the
person by name.
"There is no question it
was known to the family
and should have been
communicated to law
enforcement," he said.
"This is not tolerated
under North Carolina law
and it is not tolerated by
this law enforcement
community."
Failure to report a death
is a low-level felony in
North Carolina. David said
the person charged may
not face jail time depend-
ing on any prior criminal
record.
From news.yahoo.com:
Self-styled vampire jailed
for threatening judge
A man who claims to be
the leader of a group of
vampires has pleaded
guilty to charges he
threatened to torture and
kill an Indianapolis judge
and his family.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY-
St. Lucie County officials
are seeking funds for a
program that would help
businesses and home-

County Commissioner

Doug Coward said the
county wants to become
one of about a dozen
jurisdictions to receive a
federal $5 million Energy
Efficiency and Conserva-

The money, combined
with $20 million in com-
mitments from four
financial institutions,

Money from the fund
would be loaned to busi-
nesses and homeowners
for such things as solar
energy rooftop panels.
The loans would have
lower than typical interest
rates and longer repay-
ment terms, enabling
more people to afford the
projects, Mr. Coward said.

"These 'green' improve-
ments will in turn enable
participants to offset their
loan payments by dra-
matically cutting energy
costs, reducing energy
use, taking advantage of
existing rebates and
switching from fossil fuels
to self-generated renew-
able energy sources," Mr.

TREASURE COAST -The

improve traffic flow along
the Treasure Coast section

Plans call for installation

Rangers, 60 closed-circuit
cameras and 98 vehicle
detector systems by the end
of 2010, officials said.

eras allow traffic manage-
ment staff to watch live
feeds of roadways and see
where problems occur, he
said.
"The cameras are never
used for enforcement," Mr.
McGinness said.
The dynamic message
signs will alert drivers of
accidents and potential
delays in the road and lets
drivers decide if a route
change is necessary.
The message signs will
also be used to spread the

word about Amber and Sil-
ver alerts, Mr. McGinness
said, which are for missing
youngsters and seniors
Safety for both drivers and
emergency personnel is the
main reason for improving
traffic flow and emergency
response time, he said.
"Fifteen to 20 percent of
accidents are secondary
accidents, usually caused by
people rubbernecking and
having their eyes off the
road," Mr. McGinness said.
"If the police officers and
fire rescue are out there less
time, it means they're not
exposed to the danger," he
said.

The main goal of Road
Rangers is to assist
motorists with tire changes,
minor repairs and occasion-
ally, gas, but they also help
direct traffic around an acci-
dent, Mr. McGinness said.
The vehicle detector sys-
tems are to monitor poten-
tial trouble spots by measur-
ing the speeds of vehicles.
"If we find that at noon
traffic has slowed down to
40 mph in a 70 mph zone,
we know to zoom in on that
area and check out and see
if there's a problem," he said.
All of the improvements
are expected to be complet-
ed by the end of 2010.

Florida that has 40 percent

But in choosing that site,
commissioners brushed
aside protests from envi-
ronmentalists, who say
they will file lawsuits
because development
there could effect the Ever-

Paul Anderson, former
head of the Federal Mar-

supporter of the Treasure
Coast site, said, "We're
pleased we're No. 2 and dis-
appointed we weren't No. 1.
"Once lawsuits have
been filed by environmen-
tal groups, as they clearly
stated they would do, we
hope to drop into their (the
Belle Glade site) position to
be the inland port facility,"
Mr. Anderson said.
Former State Sen. Ken
Pruitt also attended the
meeting. He didn't speak to
the commission, but said
he supports the Port the St.
Lucie site.
Commissioners said the
selection of the site near
Belle Glade and Pahokee is
contingent on negotiations
between the port and the
landowner. Should those
talks fail, they would begin
negotiating with owners of
the Treasure Coast site.

Once the inland port is

An Open Letter to Florida Car Dealers.

Eliminate the "Dealer Fee"

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "My cu
am suggesting a change that
will reward both d y and your expectat
customers.

Virtually every car dealer Of eadu
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a SOphiStiU
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much high
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
E NT and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
ire wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
one and when I stopped charging it a few years
your ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
way no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
uld customers. Just because everybody else
ed, was doing the same thing, did not make it
us. correct.

Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
tomers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
nation are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff' that has come to
er today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.
Sincerely,

Discrimination against single people?

A local golf course charges a married couple $1,203 for an
annual membership but they charge single people $1,792.
Why are they charging them $500 more? Why do they dis-
criminate against single people? That's not right.

Leave dogs home

I recently went to an art show and was surprised by the
number of dogs present. Dogs don't know a thing about art.
I didn't go there to see and hear dogs. I went to view art. I
don't understand why some people feel it necessary to
bring one, two and three dogs to those types of events. I
have a dog, and I wouldn't bring him to an art show. Some
dog owners are so inconsiderate.

Will the stimulus bill work?

The world's all-time biggest spender has signed a $24 bil-
lion economic stimulus bill, which is supposed to encour-
age job creation. No one knows if it will be effective.
Of course, the best way to proceed would be to get the
federal government to step back, get out of the way and
allow private enterprise to perform as it always has, based
on the proven concepts of individual initiative and eco-
nomic freedom.

Want security?

If you want total security, go to prison. There you are fed,
clothed, given medical care, and so on.
The only thing lacking is freedom.

Seniors will be affected

Proponents of government-run health care promise that
cuts to Medicare will not affect seniors' benefits.
That claim cannot be true because it is bad enough that
Democrats plan to cut nearly $500 billion from Medicare to
help pay for another unsustainable government program,
but their cuts to Medicare Advantage would reduce benefits
to many seniors who rely on that program.

More on health care dilemma

Despite their protestations about the need for openness
in government, the politicians who are determined to force
government-mandated health care on all of us, frequently
negotiate in secret and lock opponents out of the process.
When they decide on something they believe they can
sell, it has become common practice to rush their product
through Congress before anyone can read it.

Health care programs cost too much

In an effort to gain support for a government take-over of
health care, Democrats are trying to paint a picture of a
bipartisan effort. They have even run ads claiming that
Republican Bob Dole is in favor.
On the contrary, he is opposed, because these programs
cost far too much for individuals, families and small busi-
nesses.

Kill the death tax

We work all our lives and pay income taxes, sales taxes
and all kinds of other taxes. Then when we die, our heirs are
required to pay an inheritance tax, also known as the death
tax.
Recognizing the unfairness of this unnecessary addition-
al tax, a group of Congressmen recommended that it be
repealed. All of the Republicans supported repeal. Howev-
er, the big spenders in Congress prevailed. Taxpayers will
get no relief this year.

Downloading made

ne of the things I
often hear when I ask
a new user what they
want to learn about their
computer is, "I want to learn
how to download."
Of all the things people
can do with their machines,
downloading seems to be a
concept that's shrouded in
mystery.
We hear about it all the
time, "just go to www.what-
ever.com and download
your copy today." or "I just
downloaded an update to
my anti-virus software; my
machine should be well-
protected now."
What exactly do they
mean by downloading? How
come no one ever explains
it?
Well, it's one of those
concepts that, for the most
part, is 90 percent automat-
ic. That's why there isn't
much written about it for the
end user.
Let me explain. Whenever
you visit aWeb site, any
picture, sound, text, etc.,
displayed is stored on the
computer that hosts it.
When you access the Web
site, all of that stuff is
transferred from their
computer down to yours, so
it can be displayed. Since
this transfer is going from
theWeb site down to your
computer, the data is said to
be downloading.
So, basically, every time

COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY

you access aWeb site, you
are automatically download-
ing lots of stuff.
The direction the data
flows is what makes the
difference between down-
loading and uploading.
Data that comes down
from the 'net to your
machine is considered
downloaded, while data that
leaves your computer and
goes up to the 'net is consid-
ered "uploaded."
When you send your mail,
the data goes from your
computer up to the mail
server; it's uploaded. When
you get your mail, it comes
down from the mail server;
it's downloaded.
Now when typical stuff is
downloaded from aWeb site,
it's usually displayed as
being downloaded (back in
the days of dialup, the
pictures would seem to
slowly form before your
eyes).
The confusion about
downloading comes from
those times when the file
you are trying to access is
something other than a file
that can be displayed as it
comes in. In these cases, you

simple
have to save the file to disk
and then access the file
manually.
This isn't as complicated
as it may first seem. When
you encounter a file like that,
typically a "save as" dialogue
box opens and the computer
wants to know where on
your computer you want to
save the file.
This is logical; the
machine needs a place to
store it as it comes in. Save it
to the desktop or create a
folder specifically for it on
the hard drive but, regardless
of where you save it, you
need to note what folder it is
being saved in and what the
file is named. That way, after
the download is complete,
you can use that to navigate
to that folder and double-
click the newly downloaded
file.
The next thing that tends
to cause confusion is what
happens when you down-
load something that your
machine doesn't know how
to open. For instance, say
you just downloaded a .pdf
file but you have no .pdf
reader installed on your
computer.
When you go to open it,
the computer displays a
message asking you what
program to use! This can be
very intimidating if you don't
understand the message but
you know what? The
download worked fine!

The file did indeed
transfer from the internet
down to the computer, the
computer just doesn't know
what to do with it and is
relying on you to tell it what
program to use.
Not sure what program to
use? Here's a hint: take the
three-letter extension (in this
example .pdf) and search on
google for "what program
opens .pdf." Google will then
come up with a list of what
programs will open your file.
Another area of confusion
comes from things that
automatically downloaded,
things such as anti-virus or
Windows updates are often
downloaded in the back-
ground so there is usually
little (if anything) that you
have to do but, since
everyone knows how
important updates are,
people can get stuck trying
to figure out how to down-
load things that are already
taken care of.
The trick there is learning
how to verify automatic
downloads worked the way
they are supposed to have.
That's downloading in a
nutshell. Have a merry
Christmas and I hope this
helps!

Party hearty but make sure you party safely

t's a party time of year
and nobody wants to be
the party-pooper who
reminds everyone that
drinking and driving don't
mix.
I'm happy to be the
designated messenger for
this party-season: drinking
and driving don't mix and
there are many ways to have
a great holiday party
without putting yourself or
your loved ones at risk.
Mothers Against Drunk
Driving offers tips for hosts
and party-goers to avoid
becoming statistics during
the holiday season.
You can find their "Have a
Ball, Baby!" safe party guide
at the MADDWeb site,
www. madd.org/programs.
If you still have doubts
about the dangers of
drinking and driving, and
still feel that the holiday
time is different, and you
can relax the rules, MADD
offers the following sobering
statistics:
In a recent year, 17,602
people were killed in
alcohol-related crashes,
which is an average of one
every 30 minutes
Alcohol-related deaths
account for nearly 41
percent of all traffic fatalities
Many more people are
seriously maimed and
injured in alcohol-related
accidents
If you are having a holiday
party, and this includes

barbeques and tailgate
parties, as well as traditional
holiday events, there are
things you need to know to
keep your party safe. This is
not only being a good,
responsible host. If you
serve liquor, you maybe
liable for accidents caused
by your guests. It is the
responsibility of hosts to
make sure no one drinks
and drives, including taking
keys, calling cabs and
finding people who haven't
been drinking.
Guests have a responsibil-
ity, as well, to make plans in
advance for a designated
driver, taxi or alternate
means of transportation.
The following dos and
don't are taken from the
MADDWeb site. For
information on volunteer-
ing or joining one of the 25
chapters in Florida, go to
www.madd.org./fl.
If you are the victim of a
drunk driver, you can call
the toll free hotline, (800)
772-6233.
Do:
Have a "bartender" who
can keep track of how much
someone is drinking. Never
allow drinks to be served to

minors. Remember that a 12
oz, can of beer, a 5 oz. glass
of wine, and an ounce and a
half of "hard" liquor contain
the same amount of alcohol.
Stay within your own
drinking limits so that you
can keep an eye on your
guests.
Offer non-alcoholic
alternatives, and if a guest is
drinking too much, offer to
freshen up the drink with a
non-alcoholic version.
Close the bar 90 minutes
before the party ends and
serve dessert and coffee.
Coffee will not sober
someone up; only time will
do that. It takes about an
hour to oxidize each drink.
Offer lots of high protein
foods cheese, deli meats
and shrimp so guests
don't drink on an empty
stomach.
Get your guests talking
or playing games. Have an
amateur fortune teller.
When people are busy, they
drink less.
If you're serving alco-
holic punch, use a non-
carbonated base such as
fruit juices. Alcohol is
absorbed more quickly into
the bloodstream with a
carbonated base.
Have a plan if a guest has
had too much to drink;
arrange a ride, call a taxi or
ask them to spend the night.
If you're a guest, you're
not off the hook!
Know your limits.

If you're with a group,
arrange in advance who will
be the designated driver.
Don't arrive on an empty
stomach and eat throughout
the evening. Remember that
salty snacks make you
thirsty; if you need some-
thing to quench your thirst,
choose a non-alcoholic
alternative.
Remember that you are
ultimately responsible for
your behavior. Don't put
your host on the spot by
drinking too much.
Have fun, have a great
holiday and don't let a lapse
in judgment and good sense
turn into a tragedy. That's
not how you want to
remember this holiday
season!

Solar
From page Al
Coward said in a letter to
Steven Chu, secretary of
the U.S. Department of
Energy.
The block grant would
start the program, which
would then be expanded
through the $20 million
committed by IBM South-
east Employees Credit
Union and PNC, Oculina
and Sun Trust banks.
Such a revolving loan
fund "would enable us to
build as much rooftop solar
as there is in the entire
state," Mr. Coward said.
The solar initiative would
compliment other projects
underway, including train-
ing workers on green con-
struction practices and
attracting related industry
to the Treasure Coast
Research Park near Fort

Pierce, he said.
"If the U.S. Department
of Energy grants our specif-
ic funding request, St.
Lucie County can trans-
form our regional energy
markets, kick-start related
industries, capitalize on
existing job training and
educational programs, cre-
ate jobs in the hardest hit
employment sectors,
increase the opportunity to
attract renewable energy
companies into the Trea-
sure Coast Research Park
and ultimately promote a
more sustainable econom-
ic and environmental
future," he wrote to Mr.
Chu.

New Permanent Teeth...A Life Changing Experience

Modern Advances in
dental technology and
surgical techniques mean
now, more and more peo-
ple who have lost their
natural teeth can live
fuller, richer, and happier
lives. They allow the per-
son to go to favorite
restaurants and order
what they want to eat,
instead of what they can
eat. Dental implants can
restore a person's ability
to eat, smile, kiss and
talk with confidence and
comfort.

A dental implant is a
substitute tooth root that
provides a stable founda-
tion for replacement teeth.
The implant is anchored

q

into the jawbone through
a process where the bone
and the implant become
integrated, providing the
same stability as natural
teeth. This means that
replacement teeth can
look, feel, and function
just like real teeth!
Since dental implants,
like teeth, are embedded
in the jaw, the painful
chewing associated with
removable teeth is elimi-
nated. Unlike traditional
dentures, implants sup-
ports dentures so that
there is little pressure on
the gums.

W^^wf^^^ ffy^-yv

Additionally, dental
implants can be used to
solve a variety of dental
problems. For example,
implants can be used to
replace a single missing
tooth instead of making a
traditional bridge. They
can be placed to support
an entire bridge where the
natural teeth are missing,
or they can be used to give
the patient a better fitting
denture so they can elimi-
nate the problems tradi-
tionally associated with
dentures.
Best of all, you'll be
able to smile more natu-
rally and be comfortable
in normal activities such
as talking, laughing, smil-
ing and eating.
Explore dental im-
plants as a solution to
your personal dental

dence again!

commercials said, "We
uild incredible" and
they did with the Oasis of the
Seas.
My first day was busy
looking at the different room
category staterooms. There
are so many options for
staterooms. There are 12
suite categories, 13 balcony
categories, five ocean-view
categories and six inside
categories.
I was most impressed with
the Aquatheater suites.
These suites jet out the back
of the ship on either side of
the Aquatheater, are two
bedrooms/two baths and
can accommodate up to
eight passengers. It has a
large living room area with
floor-to-ceiling glass on two
sides. The balcony overlooks
both the ocean on the rear
and side, as well as the end
of the Boardwalk and
Aquatheater. There is plenty
of room for families or a
group of friends to gather.
The public rooms were
many and with varying

themes. One of my personal
favorites of all Royal
Caribbean ships is the
Schooner Bar and this was
no exception. It's located on
deck 6, above the guest
services and opens to
overlook the Royal Prome-
nade. The piano player,
Peter, was excellent.
My new favorite would be
Dazzles, although no time to
enjoy the music and dance
there, the d6cor was gor-
geous with its champagne-
colored crushed velvet
chairs and banquettes,
mirrors and incredible
chandeliers hanging above
the winding glass stairways
leading to the balcony area
overlooking the dance floor.
When you walk in there you
would expect to see Fred and
Ginger gliding across the
floor.
As with the Voyager and
Freedom class ships, you will
find the Royal Promenade
the place to be, especially in
the evenings where you
might be strolling along or
sitting outside one of the
caf6s and suddenly you hear
music and people bursting
into dance. The crews from
the various theater groups
are dancing in the streets
and mostly everyone starts
dancing. Well, I did, along

folks. It was a fun place to be.
I cannot go into detail
about each of the venues,
because there are so many,
and because I was unable to
experience them all in two
days. I will, however, give a
synopsis of the many venues
you might experience
aboard the Oasis.
Also located along the
Royal Promenade you will
find Sorrento's, a place for
pizza almost anytime of the
day into the wee hours of the
morning, as well as Caf6
Promenade for coffee, light
fare and desserts. Bolero's for
those who love salsa music,
On Air Club for up-to-the-
minute sports and news, but
also forWii games and trivia.
Globe and Atlas Pub, which
sports Atlas holding up the
globe high above the
entrance and another Royal
Caribbean first, the Rising
Tides bar which, floats from
deck five to eight. When the
bar is on eight, there is a
water light show where it
would park on deck five.
Jazz on 4 sports a soft
decor and feels reminiscent
of the clubs of old.
Blaze, on the other hand,
is wild with colors, with
dungeon-like walls sur-
rounding the dance floor.
This, of course, is the
nightclub for those who love
to dance through the night.
Comedy Live has the look
and feel of the subway. I did
not have the opportunity to
enjoy the comedians;
however those we met later
said it was very funny.

television; wish we stayed, it
looked fabulous.
The classic Viking Crown
Lounge is a signature of
every Royal Caribbean ship
and this was no different,
however it is not 360-degrees
around, it sits high above the
ship in front of the Crown
Loft Suites. It is a quiet
lounge and connects on one
side to the Pinnacle Chapel
and on the other to the
Pinnacle Lounge, which can
be used for private func-
tions.
Do not let anyone tell you
that this ship is too big,
because when you have
something to fit everyone's
style without the feel of a
large ship, is it really too big?
Running out of room
again. Tune in next week for
my final article on this
incredible ship.

Col.
"I was at a point in my life
where I was ready for some
new challenges," he said.
Mr. Bentrott said he and
Mr. Cooper attended col-
lege together at the Univer-
sity of Colorado.
"I had previously known
Don Cooper and he indi-
cated to me there was a
need for an assistant man-
ager down here," Mr. Ben-
trott said.
Talking over the position
from Mr. Cooper, who's
been city manager for near-
ly 20 years, will be a chal-
lenge, Mr. Bentrott said.
Their management styles
are similar in some ways,
but different in others, Mr.
Bentrott said.
However, he did not want
to go into details.
He believes in participa-

tory management and in
"providing the best services
we can for citizens," he
said.
One of the biggest chal-
lenges, he said, in taking on
the position is dealing with
continuing budgetary
problems.
The goal is to maintain-
ing the "level of services as
high as we can with the
resources we have," Mr.
Bentrott said.
Mr. Bentrott said he
doesn't expect as large of a
drop in revenue as during
the last year, but the chal-
lenge will still exist.
Outside of the job, he
said, he spends most of his
time with his family.
Taking care of his family
and earning a living have
been his priorities during
his career, he said.
When his children were
younger, he said, he
coached some sports in
which they were involved.
"Keeping up with them
and work has kept me pret-
ty busy," he said.

FORT PIERCE Bobby
Vee comes from a musical
family. His father played the
violin and piano, his uncle
the sax and his two older
brothers, guitar. He played
the sax in high school in
Fargo, N.D., but traded it in
for a guitar he found in a
pawn shop for $30. He did-
n't have the last few dollars
and his dad went it to bring
it home.
The younger Vee, who
shortened the family name
ofVelline, began playing the
new style of music, rock 'n
roll, and 50 years later, he's
still touring, now with
singers Brian Hyland and
Shirley Alston Reeves of the
Shirelles.
They bring their rock 'n
roll memories to the Sun-
rise Theatre on Jan. 8 and
Mr. Vee spoke recently
about the sad day that start-
ed his career and a piano
player named Bob Dylan.
Mr. Vee was 15 and play-
ing in a rock'n roll band on
Feb 3, 1959. He had tickets
for a show in Moorhead,
Minn., starring Buddy
Holly, RichieValens and The
Big Bopper.
"I came home from
school for lunch," Mr. Vee
said. "I walked in and hear
the radio. They were talking
about the tour. I got closer
and my mom was in the
kitchen, staring out the
window. As I listened, they
weren't plugging the show.
They were talking about a
plane crash. I was stunned."
Of course, Buddy Holly
and the others were on that
plane, and Feb. 3, 1959
became known as "the day
the music died." However,
the remaining acts, includ-
ing Dion and the Belmonts
and Waylon Jennings, who
played bass for Buddy
Holly, had arrived in town.
They decided to go on with

the show and asked for fill-
in bands.
"Our bass player called
and they said to come on
down to the Moorhead
Armory," Mr. Vee said. "We
were on and the host asked
for our band's name. We
didn't have one and stared
at the floor. I said, The
Shadows. I'm not sure
where it came from.
"At that moment, I was
scared to death," he said.
"By the second song, it was
fun, but I had mixed emo-
tions. I'd lost my heroes,
but I was finding some joy
in it. We got through the
night. It was like a rock 'n
roll wake. When our part
was over, we had school the
next day. As we left the pro-
moter gave us his card."

They began playing local-
ly and eventually got a
record contract. With hits
like "Susie Baby," "Devil or
Angel" and "Take Good
Care of My Baby," Mr. Vee's
career was on its way.
Today, he is proud to per-
form with friends Mr.
Hyland and Ms. Reeves and
with several of his sons,
who are in the band.
"I hope I perform forev-
er," he said.
"The fans, the people who
come to the shows, grew up
with rock 'n roll. Nostalgia
is a good thing. We remem-
ber the good stuff."
And where does Bob
Dylan fit in? In those days,
he called himself Elston
Gunn.
"In the beginning, we

were looking for a piano
player," Mr. Vee said. "He
had relatives in the area and
heard we were looking. He
came up to my brother Bill.
He played 'Whole Lotta
Shakin' Going On.' I think
he only knew one song."
Elston Gunn didn't stay
with them for long. He
changed his name to Bob
Dylan and went solo.

Bobby Vee, Brian Hyland
and Shirley Alston Reeves
perform at the Sunrise The-
atre, 117 S. Second St., Fort
Pierce, on Jan. 8 at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $75 VIP seating,
$45 and $39.

Week of 12-25-2009

Aries-March 21-April 19
You know what you want.
Stay centered on your
main goals. Listen closely.
You are in a very positive
energy pattern right now.
Find a little quality time
for yourself. Do a few deep
breathing exercises when
you first wake up. It's bet-
ter than drinking two cups
of coffee. Now you are
running on your own
steam. Good luck.

Taurus-April 20-May 20
Let go of the past and
move on. Don't expect
others to do things your
way without a commit-
ment. You can't rescue the
wounded. Stop trying.
Your place in this world is
to keep a steady pace,
move forward and live an
exciting, inspired, joy-filled
life. You have all this
potential. Make the best of
it. It's your destiny.

Gemini-May 21-June 21
You continue to shine in
wonderful ways. Why? You
listen to your inner guid-
ance. You move forward
when it feels right. Many
friends are proud of you.
Stay focused on your three
top priorities. Less impor-
tant things can wait. Keep
this plan going in 2010
and you will have the best
year of your life just
ahead.

Cancer-June 22-July 22
There is much more to life
than basic survival. All the
earthly pleasures will not
sustain you until you feed
your emotional and spiri-
tual needs first. Take it one
day at a time and trust
your very first impressions.
This is possible for you
because of your extra
large heart. You can do it.
Your personal happiness
depends on it.

Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
Recent successes have
motivated you to wanting
even more. Just be sure to
not take on too many
things at once. No reason
to get scattered now. You
know what feels right. It's
good to make a written
plan or agenda every day.
Be flexible but follow it
closely. It will move you

The focus you have been

The Village People
Producer/Composer Jacques Morali found Felipe dancing in
his Indian costume in a crowd in NY's Greenwich Village, and
seeing him, gave him the idea to put together a group of
Village icons from a variety of American social groups. Soon
after, Morali saw Victor Willis in Broadway's The Wiz and
Victor brought along Alex Briley to play a G.I.With partner
Henri Belolo, Morali held auditions for 3 more performers
and Village People was formed! These six talented men
combine energetic choreography with outrageous fun and
lots of bumping and grinding, singing and dancing, provide
great entertainment for all!

ello, smart shoppers.
Hope you had a
wonderful, blessed
Christmas and Hanukkah.
A reader e-mailed thanking
me for this recipe her
grandmother used to make.
I'm writing on Dec. 14; how
strange to write about the
NewYear when we haven't
had Christmas.
Let's ring in year 2010! Here
are a couple of NewYear's
traditions. Up north, eat a
piece of pickled herring at
midnight and touch a dollar
bill. Symbolically, may there
always be food on the table
and money in your pocket.
Here in the south, you
must eat pork and black-eyed
peas on NewYear's Day.
I can remember NewYear's
eve being a celebration where
we made as much noise as
possible at midnight. I have
some noisemakers from my
parents, given to them by my
dad's parents, that date back
almost 100 years, wooden
handles and all. No cut
fingers from sharp metal,
that's for sure.
To me, it's a capital sin to be
sleeping at midnight. I used
to wake my kids up just to
make noise. Silly? Childish?
Maybe so, but I hope to never
lose that excitement.

more. Don't think

there will
ow. Some-

times tomorrow never
comes.
This week's column is a
tribute to mamma, my
paternal grandmother. For
NewYears she made "cook-
ies," not regular cookies but
special Italian treats coated
with honey and topped with
colored candy sprinkles.
Many of you are familiar
with Strufoli (honey clusters),
but her other specialty I bet
you've never heard of.
Tordillo, made with olive oil
and wine, was everyone's
favorite. When I finally
decided to make them, I kept
hearing mamma saying, "you
have to feel when it's right."
Back my memory went to
when I was 17 and "I remem-
bered mamma." I asked for
the recipe and mamma said
in her delightful Italian
accent, "you come over and
we do it together."
What I thought was going
to be very easy turned out to
be a bit of a fiasco when I

kept questioning mamma's
instructions. Here's how it
went while making the
tordillos.
Mamma: Dump flour on
the board.
Me: How much flour?
Mamma: "This much," she
said as she pointed. "Make a
hole in the center of the flour
and pour in 1 glass of wine
and 1/2 glass oil."
Me: "What size glass?"
Wouldn't you know I meant
how many ounces?
Mamma didn't. As her
voice started to rise, she held
up the glass and shouted,
"This size! Now mix it all
together until it feels right,"
she said, determined to go
on.
At that point I just couldn't
resist and asked, "What does
right feel like?"
Well, she threw her hands
up in desperation and said,
"Don't say another word, you
ask too many questions;
watch what I do and DO it."
In most traditional
cooking, you have to feel
when it's right. I've taken that
"feel" and tried to put it into
measurements for you in all
family recipes I have written.
While making these cookies, I
think I really learned what

"right" feels like as "I remem-

Enjoy. See you next year!

TORDILLO (NIB)
The wine used for these
cookies was muscatel. If you
can't find it, use a slightly
sweet white wine or a dry
white wine. such as chablis or
Chardonnay, mixed with 1
teaspoon of sugar.
4 cups all purpose flour
1/2-cup extra virgin olive
oil, warmed slightly in the
microwave
3/4-cup wine
Canola oil, enough to fill
a medium saucepan
halfway
1 cup honey
1-1/2 tablespoons sugar
Multi-colored candy
sprinkles
Using the dough hook on
your electric mixer or food
processor, mix first three
ingredients together. Place
dough on cutting board and
knead for about 5 minutes

until smooth and silky.
Break off small pieces of
dough and roll into a cylinder
about 1/2-inch wide and 2-
inches long. Place thumb (or
3 fingers) in center of cylinder
and press dough down firmly
as you push forward then
towards you, causing the
cylinder to curl and look
somewhat like a seashell.
Fry cookies a few at a time
until golden. Drain on paper
towels.
In medium saucepan,
bring honey and sugar to a
boil, lower heat and simmer
for 5 minutes. Add cookies a
few at a time, turn to coat.
Remove to platter with a
slotted spoon. Dust with
sprinkles.
Note: Cookies can be
made, fried and stored in an
airtight container for weeks.
Glaze the day you're ready to
serve.

M erry Christmas!
Happy Hanukkah!
Happy Kwanzaa!
Whatever your religious
belief, I want to wish you and
yours the very best this
holiday season.
I love this time of year. It's a
time for families to be
together and a time for love
and harmony. I just wish it
would cool off enough to
"feel" like the holiday season.
Something about shorts on
Christmas day while cooking
on the grill just doesn't feel
right to me.
As in many years past, we
have friends, family, neigh-
bors and even ourselves who
maybe celebrating this
holiday season with a loved
one at war overseas. Keep
them in your thoughts and
prayers, and set a seat aside at
your table so that everyone
will remember the sacrifice
those men and women are
making for us.
Take the time to tell your
loved ones that you love
them. Take a moment to say
hello to a stranger. It's the
time of year where we all
need to be more human,
more kind and caring.
My favorite Christmas song

That easy par-4 is over
The tough par-5 just begun
And so this is Golfmas
I hope you have fun

A very merry Golfmas
And a happy NewYear
Let's hope for a good one
No more laying up in fear
And so this is Golfmas
Long drives for weak and

Bad shots are so wrong
And so happy Golfmas
