From

Authorities said Bennie

arrested man in the
county. Records show he
has been arrested 146
times since 1998, when
Hamilton County's record-
keeping system was
updated.
Veteran police officers
said he was arrested many
more times in the decades
before that.
Crabtree's record
includes: criminal tres-
passing, disorderly
conduct and theft. Police
say he steals food and
intrudes in places such as
the University of Cincin-
nati, hospitals and busi-
nesses.
He's never done any-
thing serious enough to be
sent to prison. Because of
jail overcrowding, he's now
often released hours after
arrest.
Police say the 61-year-
old man has lived mostly
on the streets and has
some mental problems. A

About the time St. Lucie

Republicans began por-

Those portrayals, which
Mr. Craft, a resident of Fort

what is wrong with politics.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY-
St. Lucie County Deputy
Sooner Means is prepar-
ing for a grueling series
of bicycle rides.
From Sept. 11 to 14,
she'll be traveling 260
miles, from Boston to
New York City.
Although the trek will
be challenging, Deputy
Means said it will be for a
good cause.
She'll be the only law
enforcement officer from
the Treasure Coast par-
ticipating in the Tour de
Force.
The ride commemo-
rates police officers who
died on Sept. 11, 2001.
Proceeds from sponsor-
ships and other money
raised will go to help
children of law enforce-
ment officers killed in
the line of duty.
According to the tour's
Web site, it evolved after
New York City Police
detective Robert De Pao-
lis and eight other offi-
cers took a bicycle trip to
honor their peers who
died in 2001 in 2002.
About 170 cyclists are
expected to participate
in this year's event, the

she had never traveled

"It's kinda snowballed

She will typically travel

PORT ST. LUCIE Global posi-
tioning system devices are general-
ly used to find destinations.
But in one criminal investigation
earlier this month, Port St. Lucie
police officers used a stolen GPS to
find its owner.
As a result of the investigation,
police arrested Charles Madden,
18, of 961 S.E. Albatross Road, Port
St. Lucie, after they found him in
possession of what they believed to
be a bag with stolen property,
according to a report.
Mr. Madden was arrested Aug. 19
and charged with dealing in stolen
property.
Inside the bag, the report said, a
police detective found a GPS sys-
tem, turned it on and began looking
for stored addresses.
The detective sent a police officer
to an address on Carnival Street
and the resident confirmed some-
one broke into his car between 1
p.m. Aug. 1 and 7:30 a.m. Aug. 2.
The GPS system and a holder
with 12 CDs were missing, the man
told police.
He did not "report the incident
because he thought it would be a
waste of time," the report said.
The investigation leading to that
discovery began after police
received a report on Aug. 9 of an
automobile burglary on Concha
Street, a report said.
The owner of the car reported
that between 5 p.m. on Aug. 8 and
2:29 p.m on Aug. 9, someone broke
into his vehicle and stole a GPS sys-
tem.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY- At
St. Lucie County's Emer-
gency 911 Center, the calls
range from frivolous to life
and death.
Tiffany Bennett, now
operations coordinator for
the county's E-911 division,
recalled one of the latter
when she was an operator.
She was talking to a man
on the phone and heard
some noise.
"As we were talking, he
was actually stabbing him-
self," she said, adding that
she didn't realize at first he
was doing that.
The man survived, she
said.
These days, the E-911
center staff is in a better
position to deal with the
gamut of calls. Within the
last couple of weeks, the
staff moved into the new
emergency operations cen-
ter at the St. Lucie County
Fairgrounds.
One of the main benefits,
Ms. Bennett said, is the
center is about three times
the size of the former one
on Rock Road.
"They (the staff mem-
bers) were practically sit-
ting on top of each other
before," she said.
While the extra space
may make it easier for
responders to do their jobs,
the most significant benefit
of the new center to the
public is advanced technol-
ogy.
Ms. Bennett said new
computer systems provide
911 operators with more
information about the loca-
tion of callers from cell
phones.
Before, she said, they got
the location of the nearest
cell tower. Now they get
more specific information.
Just as important, she
said, the center has room to
grow in terms of operators
and technology.
The computer system has
the capability to allow oper-
ators to receive text mes-
sages and video from
callers, but that awaits
upgrades from cell phone
companies and some addi-
tional funding.
Even without the video
capability, for Amy Boger,
an operator, the system is
far advanced, compared

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "My Cu.
am suggesting a change that
will reward both you and your expectati
customers.
Virtually every car dealer of educa
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a Sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much high
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.
s

Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
tomers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.

fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would

gressional District, period."
Mr. Craft, a Democrat,
would oppose Congressman
Tom Rooney, R-Jupiter, in the
November 2010 general elec-
tion to represent the district
that includes most of St.
Lucie and Martin counties
and part of Indian River
County, in addition to several
others.
At this point, Mr. Rooney
isn't campaigning and
remains focused on serving
his constituents, said Jeffrey
Ostermayer, a spokesman.
He's not making any com-
ments on National Republi-
can Congressional Commit-
tee e-mails regarding Mr.
Craft, Mr. Ostermayer said.
"The 2010 election is the
Chris Craft
furthest thing from his
mind," he said.
Andy Sere, regional press
secretary for the committee,
said he believes Congress-
man Rooney has done a good
job and is in fine shape for re-
election.
At the same time, he said,
Mr. Craft has a record and it is
his job to point out "what the
real record is" for the county
commissioner.
Mr. Craft, 36, a native of
Fort Pierce, said he got into
the election because many
people in the community
want an independent voice.
He said his main concerns
include agriculture, helping
veterans and dealing with
unemployment.
Mr. Craft said he's worked
to protect the environment
and create coalitions to bring
new jobs to the area.
But instead of focusing on
that, he said, Republicans are
spreading "half truths, lies
and innuendos."
His campaign notes news-
paper coverage showing peo-
ple are paying less in county
taxes than before he took
office.
While Mr. Sere notes that
St. Lucie County has one of
the highest unemployment
rates in the state, Mr. Craft's
campaign said the economic
slump is of national propor-
tions. They contend the
unemployment rate is rising
at rate lower than the state as
a whole.
Mr. Craft said he's worked
with others, regardless of
party affiliation, to diversify
St. Lucie County's economy.
He said he believes people
want the more middle-of-the
road position that he is offer-
ing.
Congressman Rooney's
position on health reform is
extreme, he added.
Mr. Ostermayer said Con-
gressman Rooney favors
health reform, but not the
plans promoted by Democ-
rats.
Mr. Craft said he's ready for
an honest debate, but if
extreme rhetoric dominates,
"the voters lose."

APATITE
Yes, there is a gemstone
named Apatite. It is a calci-
um phosphate mineral with a
hardness of 5. It is found in
Brazil, Burma and
Madagascar. There are also
deposits in India and Sir
Lanka. Its name is derived
from a Greek word meaning
'to deceive.' This is because
of the variety of colors and
formations in which this
stone occurs, making it easy
to mistake it for other miner-
als. It can be yellow, blue,
green, brown and gray or
colorless. The largest known
Apatite deposit is in Kirovsk,
Russia. The most popular
color is the light blue-green
and it pairs up beautifully
with the blue-green opals.
This gemstone is sensitive to
acids and has a fluores-
cence in a black light. This
remarkable gemstone also
occurs in a cat's-eye. The
best cutting style for this
gemstone is an oval, but
rounds work well too.
Rectangles are rare. These
beautiful gems are quite soft
and can be scratched with a
knife so every day wear is
not advised. They would be
better suite for a pendant or
earrings. This gem can be
confused with beryl or tour-
maline and synthetic apatite
is known. If you think you
have an apatite or would like
to see them we have jewelry
set with this special gem.
Take a moment to stop by
the store and see this pretty
gem for yourself.

into the jawbone through
a process where the bone
and the implant become
integrated, providing the
same stability as natural
teeth. This means that
replacement teeth can
look, feel, and function
just like real teeth!
Since dental implants,
like teeth, are embedded
in the jaw, the painful
chewing associated with
removable teeth is elimi-
nated. Unlike traditional
dentures, implants sup-
ports dentures so that
there is little pressure on
the gums.
Additionally, dental
implants can be used to
solve a variety of dental
problems. For example,
implants can be used to
replace a single missing
tooth instead of making a
traditional bridge. They
can be placed to support
an entire bridge where the
natural teeth are missing,
or they can be used to give
the patient a better fitting

nate the problems tradi-
tionally associated with
dentures.

said.
The woman ultimately
survived, Ms. Boger said.
In many cases, Ms. Ben-
nett said, operators don't
know the outcomes of calls.
While some are life and
death, Ms. Bennett said,
they get their share of calls
about aliens and sonic
booms from space shuttle
missions.
One of the more infa-
mous calls occurred earlier
this year, when a woman
who was unhappy McDon-
ald's wouldn't give her a
refund called 911 three
times.
Although police charged
the woman subsequently
with misuse of 911, Ms.
Bennett said the caller was
respectful to operators.
Just getting enough infor-
mation from callers is
sometimes a challenge, she
said.
"They just want some-
body out there right now
and they don't want to tell
the whole story," Ms. Ben-
nett said.
In cases where callers
themselves can't provide
the whole story, technology
helps.
One woman, whose car
went into a ditch on Orange
Avenue, "swore up and
down she was on Okee-
chobee Road," said Tom
Daly, emergency operations
coordinator for St. Lucie
County.
The technology helped
locate her by providing
more precise information,
he said.
In another case, technol-
ogy allowed authorities to
locate a pregnant woman
who was shot near a ceme-
tery. The initial problem
was, she didn't know which
cemetery.
The pregnant woman sur-
vived, but her baby didn't,
Mr. Daly said.

Slow down across the bridge
I know I am peculiar, but for some reason, I choose to drive
my car at the posted speed limit.
In my case, this means an often-traveled jaunt on A1A and
crossing the bridge.
For some reason, the bridge crossing inspires about 90 per-
cent of drivers to suddenly step on the gas and overtake me,
going at least 55 or 60 mph.
Now, I can understand this if a man's wife is having a baby,
but I doubt this is the case for so many. What's the hurry ?
Get the facts straight
I am appalled at the misinformation that is out there re:
health care.
I am a social worker and am very familiar with the services
that are provided under our present system, especially to our
children. The system needs to be fixed and I wish conserva-
tives would stop burying their heads in the sand. If we don't
invest in preventive health care, we will pay much more later.
It costs more to visit an emergency room after the fact, than
if someone was able to get a yearly physical, for example.
There is not enough room for me to give you examples of
how Medicaid has failed our children in this county, or how
parents have a really difficult time obtaining Kid Care in Flori-
da because of the incompetence of some of the people who
work in that office.
I'll give you one example. Last year, there was no orthope-
dic surgeon in this county or within 70 miles of here north or
south who would accept Medicaid from a child who had bro-
ken his arm. By the time we found someone willing to do it
pro bono, his arm had already begun to set and it cost a lot
more to fix it than if it had been treated initially.
So don't fool yourselves, people, and think that Medicaid is
a cure for the poor or the state-run system is available to all.
I'd like to see what would happen if one of these people's
children had an issue and they could not get treated. Would
they still be screaming at the town hall meetings?
I am advising all people who are rational and who care
about other human beings to take the time to read and learn
what is really in the health bill. Don't assume that what others
are saying is correct. We can all disagree, but we don't have to
scream and call names. We all need to educate ourselves.
Healthcare system costs
Anyone who believes our country can install a government-
run health care system without incurring dizzying debt has
not been listening.
While the citizens of this nation enjoy the best health care
on the globe, it is expensive. To experiment with something
mandated byWashington bureaucrats makes very little sense.
This and that
Calling an illegal immigrant an undocumented alien is like
calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist.
O'Rourke said:
P. J. O'Rourke said it. "If you think health care is expensive
now, wait until you see what is costs when it's free!"
Pay attention
Has anyone noticed? Home values are going down, but
taxes are staying up. Go figure.
Can't make ends meet
Enough is enough for those on fixed incomes. Phone com-
panies are double charging, electric companies want an
increase, food packages get smaller and prices go up, credit
card companies are continuing to raise interest rates, gas
prices are going up for no apparent reason, except maybe
price gouging, prescription prices are absolutely outrageous,
insurance rates are increasing, nobody wants to rent out an
apartment or condo for a price that someone on Social Secu-
rity can afford, yet elected officials keep their salaries. Please,
put a stop to this.

Expert talks about nutrition, part 2
Hank Frier holds a
doctorate in
nutritional bio-
chemistry from the
University of Connecticut
and is an adjunct professor
at Indian River State
College, teaching nutrition
and diet therapy.
Last week, I wrote about
some of his views on
nutrition. This week, I'll
share more of his views.
Saturated and trans fats
have been in the news a
great deal. Saturated fat is
chiefly found in foods from
animals, including dairy
products, and from plants
such as coconuts and
palms.
Trans fats are formed
during the process of
hydrogenation. Processed
products, such as mar-
garine, shortening, cook-
ing oils and foods made
from them are the chief
sources of trans fats in our
diet. Mr. Frier spoke of the
importance of limiting
both.
"I think it's a great idea
to ban trans fats from
foods," he said. "Saturated
fats raise LDL, or bad
cholesterol," he said.
"Trans fats raise bad
cholesterol and lower
HDL, or good cholesterol.
"Back in the 1940s and
1950s, it was decided that
people should reduce
saturated fats and eat more
vegetable oils. Scientists
knew that people liked
butter, so they looked to
replacements. They could
take liquid vegetable oil
and make it solid through
hydrogenation. People
were told not to eat butter,
but to eat margarine."
New scientific informa-
tion has changed that
thinking.
"We're finding out, in the
last 15 years, that it has not
benefited the health of the
nation," he said. "People
are still at risk for heart
disease. Now, everyone
says, 'no trans fats.' The
FDA allows baked goods to
say they have 0 trans fats
even with a gram. There's
no significance if you don't
eat a lot of baked goods,
but if you do eat a lot,
you're picking up a lot of
trans fats.
"People should limit
baked goods intake and
read labels. They should
understand that if they say
0, it may have up to a
gram."
Mr. Frier suggested olive
oil as a spread for bread
and cooking and says
liquid oils, such as canola
oil, are preferable to solid
fats.
He also spoke about the
fine line between foods,
foods that make health
claims and drugs.
"The food industry
would love to make
claims," he said. "Anything

disease is a drug, accord-
ing to the FDA. If you say
you prevent heart disease,
you are a drug."
Mr. Frier also spoke
about healthy eating for
weight loss.
"If you expand the
difference between protein
and carbs and raise the
amount of protein and
lower the carbs, there'll be
greater weight loss," he
said. "There's also an
improvement in body
composition and people
lose more body fat."
He suggested staying
away from refined carbs,
found in processed foods,
because they are believed
to stimulate insulin
production and add to
weight gain.
"The diet that seems to
work best is lean protein,
which leaves you less
hungry, and complex
carbs, including brown
rice, cauliflower, broccoli,
leafy vegetables, carrots
and bok choy," he said.
He also recommended a
multivitamin with miner-
als with such a diet.
"It doesn't matter if you
eat three meals a day or
graze," he said. "Do
whatever works for you,
what you can live with.
That's true for any diet."

Free site pulls financial data into one place
personal computers
have always been
good for keeping
track of finances. There are
plenty of programs, such
as Quicken, Microsoft
Money, Quickbooks and
Turbo Tax out there to help
with the task and most
online banking systems do
a pretty good job, too.
With all the different
programs out there, it can
be confusing just deciding
where to start. Then (after
shelling out hard-earned
cash for the right software)
setting up your program
can be a challenging.
There has got to be a
better way and I think I
may have found it.
Fire up your Web
browser, head over to
www.Mint.com and take a
look around. This free
service is one of those rare
sites that really delivers
quality content without
the spyware, annoying ads,
viruses and other
"gotchas" that often
plague other free sites.
After spending a week or
so checking it out I have to
admit I'm impressed.
So, what is it? Mint.com
is a personal finance site
that gathers all your
COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
financial information into
one place so you can see
exactly where all of your
money is coming from and
where it's going.
The operative phrase
here is that "it gathers" the
data. It works by itself
immediately after signing
up, and when you are
done, all of your accounts
are summarized and
displayed in one place. No
more logging into multiple
sites to see where you
stand.
Let me run through it
real quick.
Once you connect to
Mint.com and read up a
bit, click the free "get
started here" button. You
will be asked for your e-
mail, ZIP code and a
password to use.
Click the next button
and you will be asked for
your first bank's URL or
Web address. Enter your
bank's online banking
information and repeat
the steps for all of your
accounts.
You can enter your
online banking informa-
tion for your checking,
savings, all of your differ-
ent credit cards, your auto
loan, mortgage, even your
PayPal account.
Once all of your
accounts are added, Mint
will give you a summary of
what the balances are, the
interest rates and (most
importantly) where all of
your money is going from
all accounts at the same
time. There is even a free
iPhone app that works
with Mint, so you can have
all of your information at
your fingertips when you
are out and about.
I know many of you are
reluctant to use online
banking for fear of identity
theft, let alone giving one
Web site all the informa-
tion it needs to access all
of your accounts.
In fact, I'm sure that
right now people are
reading this thinking I
must be crazy to even
suggest it. However, as you
may or may not know, I
am a certified identity
theft risk management
specialist, and I do know a
thing or two about these
matters.
And (after careful
research and considera-
tion) I can tell you that
Mint.com is secure. The
Web site has an enormous
amount of information
regarding security, but
what it boils down to is
this: when you create your
account you are anony-
mous (all you enter is
email, ZIP code and login
information you don't
even enter your name), the
site uses the same level of
encryption the banks use,
and all of the information
is "read only," so even if a
miscreant got hold of your
login information, they
may be able to see how
much money you spent at
Starbucks this month, but
they can't do things such
as move money around or
even see any of the actual
account information (such
as names, pins or account
numbers).
But why bother? I
actually have known about
Mint for a while now but
put off checking it out
because I didn't really see
a need. I can see every-

Pay attention to your

How is it that your
county property
appraiser raises taxes
on your property year after
year, while the sales prices
of homes in your area
continue to drop year after
year?
The nation's economy
over the past few years has
shown just how unstable the
real estate industry can be.
From 2002-05, the real
estate industry, particularly
in South Florida, went
through one of the biggest
booms in American history.
Times were good and
property owners were
making money in the real
estate market. Property
owners were not overly
concerned when they
received their annual
property assessment from
the county property
appraiser's office because
the annual assessment was
typically lower than what
the owner could sell it for.
Then, the hurricanes of
Katrina andWilma hit in late
2005, and the nation's
economy and the real estate
market, especially in South
Florida, began to drop off.
Today, the nation's
economy has continued its
rapid decline into one of the
worst recessions in 20 years.

It is
time to take notice and a
hard look at your county
property appraiser's
assessment of your proper-
ty. There is a real chance that
they have valued your
property too high. Even if
the assessed value is less
than it was last year, it may
not have gone down
enough.
Each August, property
owners receive an assess-
ment notice from the
county property appraiser's

amount of property tax due
based on the value of real
property.
The property taxes are
imposed against the land

However, the window to file

ST. LUCIE COUNTY-
Graduation rates, college
placement tests and the
number of students taking
rigorous coursework will
be factored into high
school grades this new
school year
The mere mention of the
FCAT in a school class-
room can often bring looks
of anxiety or worry, but
that may start to change
when the new school grad-
ing system starts to count
other scholarly activities.
The new system will be
based on a possible total of
1,600 points, with 800
reflecting FCAT grades,
district officials said.
The remaining 800
points will be scored based
on overall graduation
rates, graduation rates of
at-risk students, scores on
post-secondary readiness
tests such as the ACT, SAT
and CPT, a college place-
ment test and accelerated
course work, such as dual-
enrollment technical class-
es that offer industry certi-
fication on completion and
advanced placement or
international baccalaure-
ate courses.
Owen Roberts, assistant
superintendent for cur-
riculum and accountability
in St. Lucie County, said
the measure is expected to
show a wider, more accu-
rate picture of the quality
of education at the high
school level.
"This is very different
from any other grading
system in the country and I
think we are going to really
see some results," said Mr.
Roberts.
The change is a result of
a Senate bill, which made
changes to the current
Sunshine State Standards
for schools.
"There were concerns
that FCAT alone was not a
serving the purpose of
evaluating the school, and
this would be a better
measure of schools suc-
cess," said Mr. Roberts.
"We are hoping to see
that this brings improve-
ment to the high school
grades," he said.
In 2008-09, Fort Pierce
Westwood Fort Pierce
Central and Port St. Lucie
high schools earned D
grades. Treasure Coast and
St. Lucie West Centennial
both earned Cs while Lin-
coln Park earned an A.
According to the Florida
Department of Education
Web site, the Florida
School Recognition Pro-
gram rewards schools
financially for keeping
their grades high. For each
A grade, or letter improve-
ment, the school can earn
$75 per student.

Artist-in-residence
program to debut
The Lyric Theatre and the
Educational Foundation of
Martin County have part-
nered to establish an artist res-
idence program that will pro-
vide educational
opportunities for students
and teachers in Martin Coun-
ty.
The program will debut Oct.
5 with "The Nestor Torres Ini-
tiative" a week-long residency
with Grammy-winning Latin
jazz artists Nestor Torres.
Students and teachers from
Warfield and Palm City ele-
mentary schools, Challenger
School, Hidden Oaks Middle,
Jensen Beach High School and
the Pine School are scheduled
to participate in the project.
The week will culminate
with a concert on Oct. 9 at the
Lyric, featuring selected stu-
dents who have worked with
Mr. Torres throughout the
week. John Loesser, executive
director of the Lyric spoke
about the program.
"We are excited to be part-
nering with the Education al
Foundation or Martin County,
working to bring major artists
like Nestor Torres directly into
the schools to work with both
music educators and stu-
dents," he said. "It is our goal
to motivate and educate as
many as our children as we
can by having them work
directly with the artists."

Community theater has 'key' to comedy
By Shelley Koppel
Entertainment writer
FORT PIERCE For its
first play of the 2009-10
season, the Pineapple
Playhouse has chosen a
farce, "Key for Two," by
John Chapman and Dave
Freeman.
It tells the story of Harri-
et, who solves her financial
problems by entertaining
two married men, on dif-
ferent nights of the week.
Keeping the men apart
requires some fancy foot-
work by Harriet and great
timing by the cast.
Pineapple veteran Mer-
cedes Richmond is the
director and she spoke
recently about the joy of
farce.
"In a farce, the timing
has to be perfect," she said.
"Just getting the timing
right is a challenge. There
are some veterans in my
show and some newbies.
I'm over-the moon with
this cast."
Nicole Leonard plays
Harriet, who juggles her
lovers, a husband in Peru,
a best friend and assorted
other characters.
"She's amazing," Ms.
Richmond said. "She's new
to our theater, but not to
the Treasure Coast. She is a
comedian who does stand-
up. She's very animated
and I keep comparing her
to Lucille Ball, because of
the things that she does
with her face. I cannot
gush enough about her."
Harriet's lovers are
played by John Procino
and Michael Gotz.

"He's perfect as an older
fellow who's very amorous.
"Michael is a jack-of-all
trades who's helping with
sets and graphics. He's one
of Dave Moberg's kids at
IRSC and he's very talent-
ed."
Ms. Richmond loves
combining veterans and

"It was a happy acci-
dent," Ms. Richmond said.
"I had another actress who
couldn't do the show and I
was stumbling around. I
got a call from her that
she'd missed the auditions,
but someone had told her I
was looking. She was so
adorable, so cute and as a
blond, a perfect contrast to
the darker Harriet."
Rounding out the cats
are familiar names: Jan
Buzzeo, Deborah Johnson
and Joe Peduto. All three
are great comedians who
understand the impor-
tance of timing, Ms. Rich-
mond said.
Ms. Richmond loves
directing the first show of
the season and this is her
first farce.
"I don't like to wait," she
said. "I want to direct. I'm
excited about this play. It's
shaping up to be one of my
favorites."

Aries-March 21-April 19
Focus on a healthy lifestyle
that includes one or two fun
things every day. Your playful
nature will carry you safely
through any of life's chal-
lenges. This is the spirit of
Aries at its best. Take care of
the most important things
first. What makes you happy?
Now the rest of the earthly
stuff falls into place. Yeah,
Aries!
Taurus-April 20-May 20
Resist the temptation to take
on more than you can handle.
Refuse to let negative atti-
tudes of others knock you off
course. When worry begins,
slow down, take a step back,
take a deep breath and refo-
cus your energy. Now with the
second wind, move forward
and you will see positive
results coming in abundance.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
Living in harmony is the pri-
mary goal this week. How
much discord are you willing
to tolerate. Maybe it's time to
leave your comfort zone and
explore new ways and ideas
you have been thinking about.
Refine and sharpen your life's
tools. Now add new ones that

Twelve short films, ranging
from fictions and animation

screened in a marathon
showing beginning at 10 a.m.

Among the films to be
screened on Sept. 12 are the
documentary "Raised on
Rice and Gravy," about what
food means to a Louisianans
town; the experimental film
"Pollenating," shot with a
flatbed scanner; the animat-

ideal. Your high standards
demand that you live this way.
Now you continue on the way
to great joy and happiness.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct.22
Measure the quality and joy in
your own life by the happi-
ness you feel and express in
your own heart. You were
born to be of service to others.
Whenever you feel out of
sorts, it is because you have
let your own energy get
unbalanced. Get back to it
and continue to move for-
ward to great rewards. You
can and will do it.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
You have an emotional edge
this week. The planets are in
positive alignment for you.
Thiisis like a booster rocket
giving you extra thrust to send
your dreams into orbit when
you need the push. Now is a
good time to take action on
your greatest dream. It you do,
great, positive results are
bound to happen.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
You have a guardian angel
blessing and protecting you.
Why? It is because of your
large heart and spirit embrac-
ing and surrounding you with
light. Your large heart knows
no bounds. The universe loves
you. Are you ready to receive
back all you give to others? It
is so exciting to see a bumper
crop coming your way.
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
You are very clear with your
thinking and feelings. Why?
Because you are following
your instincts and trusting
your gut more than your head.
Resist the temptation of get-
ting sidetracked in the ways of
the world. You have come too
far for this. Live one a day at a
time. Your heart rules. You are
on the way to greatness.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Your great ideas continue to
flow. You follow your instincts.
You listen more to your heart
than your head. You have an
uncanny ability to stay away
from the world's thinking and
stay in your own wise counsel.
This just may be why you
were chosen to lead the
world in the Age of Aquarius.
You are doing a great job.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
It is very important to speak
your daily affirmations before
you start your earthly days.
Psyche yourself up. This is soul
food. It gives you the spiritual
strength to help you through
the day. Successful people
and winners in life do this.
You are a winner. Keep your
heart and spirit open. Great
blessings are sure to follow.

Foods to enjoy, especially when camping
Hello smart shop-
pers. Gone camp-
ing yet? With the
economy the way it is, you
lucky people who have
campers are just about the
only ones who can take a
vacation.
I've come up with a few
recipes that are a cinch to
make while camping. You
can get pretty tired of the
usual fare: burgers, hot
dogs, chicken and steak.
Kids love to be able to eat
their dinner with a spoon.
What's for dessert? How
about whoopie pies? Years
ago, when we lived in
Connecticut, we had them
while visiting friends.
Whoopie pies are the
best tasting cake/cookie
on the planet. I got the
recipe and it became a
family favorite. I've seen
different recipes in maga-
zines, but none compare
with the original. This is a
great dessert; just make
the cookies and filling at
home, then assemble
them at the camp site.
MEXICAN FIESTA

Serves 4
This recipe is an origi-
nal; and great for camping.
Serve it as is, or topped
with grated cheddar

it in a burrito or tuck it in
taco shells.

preferably fresh ground,
fat-free or ground

olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon chili powder

f" \, "\ English Comedy
/ j by John Chapman and Dave Freeman
A wickedly amusing play by two English Master
craftsmen of Comedy. A play of confusing mayhem
when a divorcee living in an elegant flat in England
solves her financial woes by discreetly (or maybe not
so discreetly) entertaining two married gentleman
callers on different days of the week. Splendid farcical
situations and a climax that is sheer comic wizardry.

Golfing in
Daytona Beach
The "World's Most
Famous Beach" now
has a lot more to offer
than sand and sea.
Daytona Beach, once a
sure destination for beach
lovers, spring breakers,
families and race enthusi-
asts has added some of the
best golf along the east
coast to its resume.
In my mind, Daytona has
become a perfect destina-
tion. Here you will find
something for everyone in
the family, all without the
over-crowded highways
you find in other Florida
destinations.
My family spent the last
days of the summer
relaxing in Daytona Beach
just a week or so ago.
For my son and I, there
was golf to be had, along
with motorsports attrac-
tions.
For my wife and daugh-
ters, there was a gorgeous
beach to kickback and
relax on, waves to play in
and shops to explore.
For the entire family we
had museums, historic
sites, aquatic adventures,
art galleries and more to
choose from.
Golf enthusiasts can plan
their golf getaway through
www.golfdaytonabeach. co

ed by the Daytona Beach
Area Convention and
Visitors Bureau that
packages golf and accom-
modations for added value
and convenience.
More than a dozen hotels

JAMES
STAMMER
and 16 courses have
teamed up to participate to
make Daytona Beach
Florida's fastest golf
destination.
Many of the packages
offered by participating
hotels include pre-
arranged tee times, cart
and greens fees, and
breakfast. Golf Daytona
Beach will customize
packages to fit any budget
or interest.
Golfers may choose
between the quaint
solitude of a small inn with
full kitchens, to the luxury
of a full-service hotel,
complete with upscale
dining and a spa.
We stayed at the Hilton
Daytona Beach Oceanfront
Resort (www.dayton-
ahilton.com) right on
Atlantic Avenue. The Hilton
is likely the jewel of the
hotels offering golf pack-
ages.
A word of advice to the
savvy traveler: parking at
the hotel is an absolute
mess. Depending on when
you arrive, you may wait as
long as 30 minutes to valet
or unload your car and
then just as long to check
in. I also found that
housekeeping has a bad

habit of simply walking into
your room unannounced
without even a knock on the
door.
Our room was nice and
comfortable, with a beauti-
ful view of the Atlantic
Ocean. The hotel has a full-
service spa, a refreshing
pool and a fitness room for
your enjoyment.
Just a few steps away are
the sparkling water of the
Atlantic and a beautiful
beach. We rented beach
chairs and an umbrella and
spent the day soaking up the
sand and surf.
When it was time for golf,
we teed it up at LPGA
International
(www.LPGAInternational.co
m), home of the Ladies
Professional Golf Associa-
tion. Located just west of
Interstate-95, the complex
features two distinctly
different styles of course
design.
The Champions Course is
an award-winning design by
Rees Jones and home course
of the LPGA Tour. It is here
every fall that the final stage
of the LPGA qualifying
school is held to determine
which ladies will play on
tour the following year.
At nearly 7,100 yards from
the back tees, the course
features strategic mounding,
tranquil marshes, native
preserves, numerous lakes
and pesky bunkers to
navigate. The links-style
layout has five sets of tees to
allow the golfer to deter-
mine just how much
challenge the round will
provide.
The second course at
LPGA International is the
Legend Course. Designed by
Arthur Hills, this spectacular
layout provides the perfect
balance of power, finesse

and fun. With tight, well-
bunkered greens, undulat-
ing fairways and an abun-
dance of hazards, this 7,000
yard layout requires strategy
on every shot on all 18 holes.
After playing golf, enjoy-
ing the beach and hitting the
shops, we were all famished.
Just down the street right on
Sun Glow Pier on the south
end of Daytona Beach,
where you can still drive
your car on the beach, is
Crabby Joes Deck and Grill
(visit www.sunglowpiercom
or call (386) 788-3364).
Serving breakfast, lunch
and dinner, Crabby Joe's
offers the best-tasting view
in Daytona Beach. The
restaurant sits atop the pier
out over the Atlantic. If the
view or the wonderful
atmosphere isn't enough to
get you to drop by, the food
certainly is. The menu
features fresh fish, crab,
mussels, shrimp, burgers,
wings and more to scintil-
late the palate.
When you notice the large
number of locals dining and
drinking at Crabby Joe's you
know the place must be
good. We loved it so much,
we went back before
heading home.
Now that Daytona Beach
has even more to offer, you
can see why it's a perfect
place to take the entire
family, golfers or not, for a
vacation.
