Spend any time surfing

bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to be
true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because it's
online doesn't mean it's true!
From www.sfgate.com:
Michigan man jailed for
assault during Monopoly
game. A game of Monopoly
landed a Michigan man in
jail. A local TV station
reported a 54-year-old man
was playing the board game
Saturday night with a female
friend when he tried to buy
Park Place and Boardwalk
from her.
When she refused, Fraser
Police Lt. Dan Kolke told
WWJ-AM he hit her in the
head, breaking her glasses.
The man was arrested and
charged with misdemeanor
assault and battery.
From www.news.aol.com:
Driver on two cell phones
crashes, cops say. Police say a
western NewYork tow-truck
driver was texting on one cell
phone while talking on
another when he slammed
into a car and crashed into a
swimming pool.
Niagara County sheriff's
deputies say 25-year-old
Nicholas Sparks admitted he
was texting and talking when
his flatbed truck hit the car
Wednesday morning in
Lockport, which is outside
Buffalo. The truck then
crashed through a fence and
sideswiped a house before
rolling into an in-ground
pool.
From
www.news.yahoo.com:
Police find train 'suicide'

called off their search for a
woman who threw herself in
front of a speeding train
when they found she had
dragged herself home and
gone to bed, a court source

Woman accused of extortion
By Jay Meisel

PORT ST. LUCIE A Port St.
Lucie woman is accused of threat-
ening to file a complaint with a
man's probation officer unless he
paid her money and gave her his
car.
Carol Merrilee Wands, 46, of 440
S.E. Sandia Drive, was arrested July
27 and charged with extortion,
after authorities listened to several
recorded calls between the victim
and Ms. Wands. She was released
on bond.
The victim told an investigator
with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's
Office that during June he and Ms.
Wands met for lunch.
As he was driving her home, she
said that "it had been a long time
since she had sex, and how she
needed a good man in her life," he
told the investigator.
During the trip, Ms. Wands invit-
ed him to touch her, he told
deputies.
When they arrived at her home,
she declined to have sex and the
victim left, he told
police.

PORT ST. LUCIE City leaders
celebrated last week what could be
a milestone in transportation
development for Port St. Lucie.
They held a ribbon cutting to

the past five years, the first
person many people saw
when entering City Hall
was Port St. Lucie Police
Officer Joseph P. Diskin.
Last week, Officer Diskin,
whose 36-year career in law
enforcement included
working in New York City,
said he enjoyed meeting
people as they visited City
Hall.
"I never had to arrest

The opening of the Becker Road
interchange, three months ahead
of schedule, followed within four
months of a similar event: the
completion of the Crosstown Park-
way entrance to 1-95.
Mayor Christensen called the
Becker Road interchange "the
gateway to our future," as a lot of
land in the city west of the inter-
change remains undeveloped.
Wes McCurry, president of the
development, Tradition, also pre-
dicted that before too long, devel-
opment will occur in the area.
The interchange will also make

His last day on duty was
Friday, July 31, and a few

cer Gerald Catalupo.
Reflecting back on his
career that began on June

for many residents in the southern
area of the city, she said.
The project cost of $45 million
included purchasing road right-of-
way and making some road
improvements to Becker Road, city
manager Don Cooper said.
Of that $45 million, $40 million
came from developers and $5 mil-
lion from the city, he said.
Within the next year, Mr. Cooper
said, the road will be extended to
Village Park, which is a main road
in Tradition.
It will eventually be extended
west for another 2 miles to Range-
land Road, he said.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY St.
Lucie County Commissioner
Doug Coward sees the coun-
ty's airport as a potential
source of economic develop-
ment.
In the future, he said, the
airport could offer limited
commercial service and
more industry could be
attracted there.
Mr. Coward commented
at a time when a new master
plan is being developed for
the airport, located on St.
Lucie Boulevard, north of
Fort Pierce.
One crucial issue being
considered by an advisory
committee is whether the
airport should have com-
mercial service, said Diane
Lewis, the airport's director.
It's not the first time the
issue has been considered. A

About 30 years ago, Fort
Pierce resident Dorothy
Brennan was shocked to
read that a mother had
given an overdose of pills to
her child because she
couldn't read the medical
instructions.
That prompted Ms. Bren-
nan to form a program pro-
moting literacy that is now
called Learn to Read of St.
Lucie County, said Luza Ma
Camacho, executive direc-
tor.
Last week, the nonprofit
organization, which relies
mostly on donations and
fundraising events, received
a boost from the Winn-
Dixie Foundation.
The foundation donated
$2,500 to Learn to Read,
while making donations to
10 other organizations in
South Florida.
Ms. Camacho said the
money will be used for
materials that are provided
free to volunteer tutors and
for improving the computer

being tutored in St. Lucie
County, she said.
Although Learn to Read
began with the primary
focus on teaching literacy,
changes in the community
have shifted that somewhat,
she said.
Many of the students are
learning English as a second
language, she said.
Several years ago, Ms.
Camacho was one of those
students. She said she
moved to Florida from
Colombia, where she was an
architect.
She found her ability to
make a living and live here
were hampered by having
limited knowledge of Eng-
lish, she said.
Based on a recommenda-
tion, she said, she turned to
Learn to Read for help.
Eventually, she became a
part-time employee of the
nonprofit program. She is
now the full-time director.
Her experience, Ms.
Camacho said, puts her in a
good position to help oth-
ers.
"I know how people feel,"
she said. "You can't do any-
thing without knowing the
language."
The program trains tutors
and matches volunteers
with them. Although it's
based in Fort Pierce, it has
students and tutors county-
wide.
One of the biggest needs
is for more tutors from Fort
Pierce, she said.

GOLD
What is the difference between
14kt gold and 18kt gold?
Simply, the amount of gold per
1000 units of alloyed metal.
14kt has 583 parts per thou-
sand, which makes it more
durable than 18k, which has
750. Both are durable under
normal wear. Just because you
see in the paper that gold was
$930 an ounce doesn't mean
that a ring that weighs 7 grams
should be priced as 1/3 of an
ounce of gold. This doesn't
include alloying costs to make
the gold in a lower karat than
24k or the workmanship
required to produce beautiful
jewelry or the fact that skilled
workman designed, styled and
finished each piece of jewelry.
All of these add into the price of
jewelry. Add to that the name of
a famous designer and you get
even greater costs. Even some
of the best designs can leave a
mark on some people at differ-
ent times. This is not necessar-
ily an indication that the item is
not gold of is not "good" gold it
is a chemical reaction. The
dark residue left on the skin can
come from bleaches and chlo-
rine from cleaning supplies or
swimming pools and even from
hot tubs or Jacuzzis. This acids
will attack and pit gold in time.
These chemicals can even turn
gold into almost a powder.
Here in Florida we see this
damage often. Gold is impervi-
ous to tarnishing, but often in
older jewelry one can some-
times fine dark areas on a
piece of jewelry. Most of the
time this is due to the alloys in
low karat solders and these can
be removed with polishing. If
you have any questions about
your gold jewelry or just need it
freshened up, swing by our
shop and we will clean and
examine your jewelry for free.
We are always available to talk
about you jewelry items as as well.

Commissioner Chris
Dzadovsky said that he also
believes having some form
of commercial service at the
airport is important. It will
attract industry to the area,
he said.
Newer airplanes that
make less noise should make
the issue less of a problem,
he said, in regards to the

New line

instruments
introduced
For Hometown News
News@hometownnewsol.com
VERO BEACH A new
line of hearing instruments
promise to make navigating
in noisy environments much
easier for the hearing
impaired.
"That's the big excitement
with this new product
release. Wearers can hear so
much better in noisy envi-
ronments because the hear-
ing instrument runs multi-
ple functions
simultaneously," said
William E Smith, owner of
five Audibel Hearing Care
Centers on the Treasure
Coast.
Audibel tripled the pro-
cessing power and high-
speed multi-tasking of
sound signals with the new
Anthem hearing instru-
ments family, he said.
"Sound signals are ana-
lyzed every 6 milliseconds to
manage what you want to
hear and what you don't
need to hear, like the chatter
from the last table in the
restaurant," Mr. Smith said.
The new Anthem hearing
instruments seamlessly
adjust to changing listening
environments, as wearers
move from watching TV to
talking on the phone, to
attending a concert or enjoy-
ing a restaurant meal. No
manual action is required by
the user.
A special new feature lets
users adjust the volume
through their cell or touch-
tone phone.
"This is so much easier
than trying to use a tiny
knob on a hearing instru-
ment or always carry a
remote adjuster," Mr. Smith
said.
Hearing instrument mod-
els are available with up to
16 channels for high-fidelity
resonance, providing clear,
undistorted, natural sounds.
Battery life is improved
too, Mr. Smith pointed out.
Anthem offers 25 percent
longer battery usage, cutting
down on battery costs.
The hearing instruments
come in five ranges to fit dif-
ferent lifestyles and the
extended warranty period
has been extended to two
years.

Let's level the house-buying playing field
To the editor:
In today's housing market, cash is king. With all the
short sales and foreclosures in the housing market, the
buyer with cash has a big advantage. I personally feel that
the banks should sell to the highest bidder.
The majority of cash buyers are investors. They are
buying depressed properties and flipping the houses. The
average buyer, and particularly the first-time buyer, are at
a big disadvantage. All buyers today must submit a letter
of approval when making the offer to buy. Thus, the bank
knows that the buyer is good for the purchase at the time
of offering. At the settlement table, the bank would
receive a check from the mortgage company. This check is
the same as cash.
The playing field needs to be made level. The commu-
nity needs families to be buying distressed properties.
The bank selling the foreclosed house should consider
providing the mortgage to the new buyer. The bank would
be making money by providing the financing. Investors
flipping houses helped to get us in this mess and now
they are back as cash buyers.
It is time to allow the market to decide who buys the
house. The buyer who offers the highest price should be
the new owner.

Questioning point of article
Are you doing your job? Why in the world would you post
how to forge a check, step-by-step?
I am reading the July 31 edition. The article titled "Mixed
fry is a summertime treat," on page B3. Arlene (Borg)
states, step-by-step, how to take all but a signature off a
check.
Why in God's name would this be posted in our paper?
Good, so now all your readers, good and bad, now have the
knowledge of how this horrible practice is done.
Good job!
Arlene Borg, the Grammy Guru responds: The purpose of
the information was to tell people how to prevent this from
happening, not to tell how to forge checks. It was meant as a
safeguard. I have printed this before because it's so impor-
tant. I never thought someone would read it the wrong way.
Editor's note: Arlene Borg writes the Grammy Guru food
column for Hometown News. We checked with the Martin
County Sheriffs Office to verify that the practice of check
/ .',/lin uig."as law enforcement calls it, is very real and that
citizens should avoid leaving outgoing mail that might con-
tain checks in mailboxes for extended periods.
More on food stamp fraud
I agree with the abuse on food stamps rant. I have seen
so many immigrants who have food stamps who should
not have them. The problem is with the food stamp office.
We are having bad times here, and they are giving money
away. Then on top of that, people with food stamps are
driving expensive cars and SUVs. Are they double-check-
ing these people's Social Security numbers? I thought food
stamps were for Americans who need help until they get
on their feet? Now it seems anyone from anywhere can get
them. I see so many illegal immigrants get it now.
Do all of these people get asked for their Social Security
numbers so they can qualify? Or are they free to anyone?
Fraud is rampant
Food stamp fraud is rampant across the Treasure Coast.
The other day I was behind a guy in the store. He paid for a
six-pack of beer with his EBT card. I only had one item, and
followed him out of the store. He got into a Lexus. I can't
receive food stamps. I live on my Social Security. How do
all of these people come here and get food stamps?

How to know where your data is stored
Ask yourself this
question: Do I know
where all the impor-
tant things are on my
computer?
I don't mean things that
make the computer run, I
mean files that are impor-
tant to you, such as word
processor documents and
things created by you.
Much gets said about the
importance of backing up
your data, but one question
that comes up frequently is
what exactly should we be
focused on when we do
backup our data and,
specifically, where on the
computer is it located?
There are a lot of answers
to that question that will
vary from user to user, but
I've a noticed a trend over
time as to just what files are
typically missed most
when someone has a
catastrophic hardware
failure and no backup.
Typically, people bemoan
the loss of their e-mail
addresses/contacts list, e-
mail messages, favorites
list (bookmarks), Word and
XL documents, music
(mp3s), digital pictures and
COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
miscellaneous downloads
collected over time.
Most people who I've
worked with already have
backups of Quicken or MS
Money data because those
programs prompt you to
back up all the time. And (if
they have been diligent
enough to hold onto them)
they have a set of restora-
tion disks that holds the
computers' identity just as
it was the day you took it
out of the box.
Since these disks usually
contain the operating
system (Windows) and all
the software that came
bundled (pre-installed
applications such as Word
or Works) with the
machine, there is no need
to include things such as
the operating system and
program files in your
backup list. You already
have them backed up in the
restoration disks.
Unfortunately, many
people don't go beyond the
system disks and lose all
their data.
Now that we know what
we should be focused on,
where on the computer are
these files it is the next
question that has to be
addressed.
You may have noticed a
folder on the desktop
called documents (or "my
documents"). This is the
best place to start (if you
haven't already) saving all
your documents and it
makes backing up your
data a snap. Just copy the
contents of the documents
folder to a CD or some
other backup media and
presto, you've backed up
your data.
Or have you? Is all of your
data indeed in the docu-
ments folder?
If you are like most
people, and haven't messed
around with the default
settings of your computer,
then critical files, such as
your e-mail address book
and e-mail storage folder,
won't be in the documents
folder and often gets left
behind during backup.
What about your
favorites folder? Is there a
copy of it in your docu-
ments folder? And what
about programs that create
their own folder for data,
such as MS Works and the
Palm desktop application?
Does your greeting card
program have its own data
folder?
It's important to know
where your programs store
your creative output,
because once you know
where your data is, it's
pretty easy to include it in
your backup routine.
In fact, some programs
let you change the location
or "path" of the data store,
enabling you to move the
folder to a more practical
location, such as within the
my documents folder.
A few minor adjustments
and all your data automati-
cally gets shunted to one
folder where it can be
grabbed for easy one-step
back ups.

Tips for managing complicated grief
ast week I described
what happens when
grief becomes more
complicated and seriously
affects the ability to have a
normal life. This week, I'll
discuss some of the
methods used to help
prevent and treat it.
I have mentioned the
grief counseling provided
by Treasure Coast Hospice,
and counseling is an
effective way to deal with
all the emotions surround-
ing the loss of a loved one.
Whether in a group or
individual setting, or both,
counseling offers a safe
way to express your
emotions and learn
effective coping skills.
Many of the ideas in this
column are from my own
experience and from the
Web site of the Mayo
Clinic,
www.mayoclinic.com.
Preventing complicated
grief from taking hold is
the first step. The Mayo
Clinic recommends the
following measures:
Stick to the treatment
plan. Take medications
and keep scheduled
counseling appointments.
Get enough exercise,
eat balanced meals and
don't self-medicate with
drugs or alcohol.
Reach out to friends
and family and your faith,
if that applies.
Practice stress manage-
ment. I have found yoga
and exercise to be a big
help.
Plan ahead for special
dates of anniversaries.
Don't ignore them. As the
year anniversary of my
husband's death approach-
es, I am trying to think of
things to do that honor his
life.
Learn new skills. If your
loved one took care of
certain things, learn to
master some of them
yourself. Ask for help or
take a class.
There is no standardized
treatment for complicated
grief, because it hasn't
been recognized as a
disorder for very long.
There are a number of
treatments being studied
to find out which ones are
most helpful. Grief is such
an individual matter that a
combination of different
approaches may be
necessary.
Complicated grief
therapy has proven
successful in many cases.
This therapy takes behav-
ioral counseling and
trauma therapy to explore
grief reactions. By retelling
the circumstances of the
death and other painful
issues about the loss, the
goal is to make them less
distressing.
More traditional therapy
may also be effective in
exploring emotions,
improving coping skills
and reducing feelings of
blame and guilt.
If complicated guilt has
become depression,
medication may be
prescribed for as long as it
is necessary. Anti-depres-
sants known as selective
serotonin reuptake
inhibitors may help reduce
the symptoms of depres-
sion. Then it's possible to
use coping skills to deal
with the grief and move on.
The loss of a loved one is
a terrible time and there is
no short cut through the
grieving process. However,
there are things you can do
to help yourself or a loved
one.
Never be afraid to ask for
help and never consider it
a sign of weakness. Griev-
ing is hard work and you
don't have to do it alone.

flying by the collision but the
search was called off when
the woman's partner,
returning from a night shift,
found her lying in bed with a
broken arm and other
injuries and rang emergency
services.
From www.spike.com:
Dissolving bikini is ultimate
revenge gift. A German
company has invented a new
bikini that disappears once a
girl puts it on and takes a
swim.
The swimsuit disappears
by dissolving in water, leaving
a woman completely nude
and embarrassed. The black
swimsuit looks like a real
bikini, feels like a real bikini
and fits like a real bikini. The
only difference is it's made
from a material that melts
away after a few seconds in
water.

"My wife, Heather, was an amazing woman and the center of our family. When she was
diagnosed with terminal cancer, we didn't know what to do.
"We didn't want to give up hope, so I called Treasure Coast Hospice right away. They got her
pain under control, and offered the services that enabled her to have a fulfilling life in the
final months. In fact, her quality of life was phenomenal.

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "My Cu.
am suggesting a change that
will reward both you and your expectati
customers.
Virtually every car dealer of educa
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a Sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much high
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.
Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
tomers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
nation are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff' that has come to
er today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.
Sincerely,
Earl Stewart Earl Stewart Toyota

the best places to live in
America, confirming what
locals have long known.
In 2008, America In
Bloom, a national nonprof-
it that promotes neighbor-
hood beautification,
named Stuart "America's
Most Beautiful City."
Its quaint downtown
area, lined with outdoor
cafes, art galleries and gift
shops, are a bite-size sam-
pling of the city's many
charms, which include
antique stores, museums
and historic sites.
Among the attractions is
the Lyric Theatre, a
bustling playhouse built in
1926. The arts feature
prominently in the city,
which often hosts free out-
door concerts.
Music Fest, for instance,
is a monthly event that
brings live bands for out-
door performances to
Gazebo Park on East Ocean
Boulevard. Its sponsor,
Edelweiss Cafk, also organ-
izes Oktober Fest, a Ger-
man celebration of beer,
food and partying that
brings thousands down-
town between Oct. 23 and
25. (For details, call (772)
781-8522.)
The city's reputation as a
top fishing venue has
gained it another title: sail-
fish capital of the world.
Charter a boat, drop a line
from a pier or wade into the
lovely waters. The fish are
plentiful and the views are
great.
Be sure to clear time in
your schedule for some of
the many community
events, including water-
front jazz festivals, a weekly
green market featuring
fresh produce and antique
car shows. (Call the Martin
County Conventions and
Visitors Bureau for more
information. Reach them at
(772) 288-5451 or (877)
585-0085.)
For nature lovers, a large
regional park offers easy
access just off Interstate 95
at 7645 Lost River Road.
Halpatiokee Park, a 180-
acre site, features nature
trails, 10 tennis courts, a
covered in-line hockey
rink, 12 pavilions, five ath-
letic fields, picnic sites and
playgrounds.
"There's all kinds of good
stuff here," says Parks and
Recreation Department
employee Angela Gomez.
(Call (772) 221-1419.)
A short way off is Sewall's
Point, a town of about 1.23
square miles and 2,000 res-
idents on the eastern edge
of the county, near the St.
Lucie Inlet and Atlantic
Ocean. Fishing is a popular
pastime in this affluent
community.
Not far away is Hutchin-
son Island, known for
attracting wealthy
socialites who want to
avoid the spotlight on the
area's sparkling beaches.
The whole family will
enjoy Bathtub Reef Beach
and find entertainment on
the island, at spots such as
Gilbert's Bar House of
Refuge Museum, which
provided shelter to ship-
wrecked sailors in the late
1800s. The museum occu-
pies the oldest building in
the county. (For details, call
(722) 225-1875.)
As you plan your stops
around Martin County, be
sure to make plenty of time
for photos in this scenic
corner of the Treasure
Coast.

Missoula Children's The-

shops in August.
From Aug. 10-15, kids
will work on a production
of "The Princess and the
Pea," with a performance
on Aug. 14.
From Aug. 17-22, the
kids will work on "Rumpel-
stiltskin," with a perform-
ance on Aug. 22.
Each production brings
costumes, props and
scenery to accompany the
original musicals. The chil-
dren's theater sends teams
of two directors to work
with the local children.
Annie Fletcher and Jen
Weisphal, who will be run-
ning "The Princess and the
Pea" workshop, spoke
recently about Missoula
Children's Theatre and this
year's offerings. It's a
return engagement for Ms.
Weisphal, who was in Fort
Pierce last year with
"Robinson Crusoe."
"The show is based on
the fairy tale," Ms. Fletcher
said. "Our story has two
kingdoms. The prince is
from one and the princess
from the other. They are
dealing with Jack Frost, a
mischievous character
who has been freezing all
of the water in both king-
doms. They all have to
work together to solve
their differences."
An interesting twist to
this original play is that the
pea is played by a girl.
"She ends up being the
mediator," Ms. Fletcher
said. "She's a great part.
She's the princess' best
friend."
The two young directors
are professional actors
who have been performing
since they were children,
Ms. Fletcher in Daytona
and Ms. Weisphal in North
Carolina. Both have
degrees in theater and are
professional actors.
The two attended the
Unified Professional The-
atre Auditions, a clearing-
house for performers and
production people, and
got called back by Mis-
soula.
They are in their second
year with the company
and enjoy the opportunity
to perform, as well as
direct shows.
"At least one of us always
performs at each show to
give the kids a chance to
work on stage with a pro-

Fletcher said. "It's a really

Aries-March 21-April 19
When commitments from
others are slow in coming,
summon up courage and ask
why. Your time is valuable,
too. Everyone needs to be
reminded now and then. Be
patient. You are a fire sign
ruled by the instincts. Follow
your heart. Trust your
instincts. These are the great
tools. Use them and victory is
assured.
Taurus-April 20-May 20
Now is a good time to
address feelings and emo-
tions you have been burying.
The universe wants to help
and resolve family issues and
challenges. All that is needed
is to ask and then wait for the
answer to pop in the mind.
This inner power is one of
our greatest blessings. This
will help lift a load you don't
have to carry.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
Refuse to let worry, doubt or
indecision block your path.
The key is to stay centered.
Consult your thoughts and
feelings but let your deeper
hunches guide your decision
making. Focus every day on
something you love to do just
for fun. A happy soul and a
loving heart are our greatest
blessings, you know.
Cancer-June 22-July 22
You give a lot. It is sometimes
challenging to wonder why
others can't do the same.
Aries energy is similar this
week. Read Aries. One of the
best ways to stay happy is to
stay focused on your desires.
Refuse to let the world or less
sensitive people pull you out
of your center. You are far too
great for that.
Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
You have so many workable
ideas. But you can't make
them all happen without a lit-
tle help from your close
friends. It is essential that you
work from a top priority list.
Take action on number one
then two then three. Then
stop. You've done your work.
Now it is time to play. A
healthy Leo, in balance, is as
great as it gets.
Virgo-Aug. 23-Sept.22
Perseverance is paying off.
Never give up. Continue to
keep on keeping on. Higher
dimensions of thoughts, feel-
ings and ideas are coming.

not always be recognized by
family and friends, but you
know. You are a practical
dreamer and quite an inspira-
tion to many others who love
you.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct.22
It is impossible to keep a pos-
itive-minded Libran down for
long. Why? Because you have
an inexhaustible supply of
ideas and possibilities. You
love to have two things going
at once. This is your "bal-
anced" nature. Just remem-
ber that sometimes, less is
more. Keep on defining and
refining. No reason for
burnout now.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Your understanding of mak-
ing wise, rather than hasty
compulsive choices is work-
ing for you. Apply this newly
gained knowledge in every
area of life and you will see
new roots in your greatest
desires. Now it is up to you to
help them give birth, grow,
bloom and become fruitful.
Keep it going. You are almost
there.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Continue to hone your deci-
sion-making skills. Outstand-
ing leaders get that way
because they show mercy to
others who need love, not
sternness. Give generous
praise when you see some-
one going above and beyond
and give light and hope.
Inspiring others is the great-
est gift and why we are here
on Earth.
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Your energy is at an all-time
high. The question is, where
do you want to direct it and
what are your greatest
desires? It is time for them to
be fulfilled. You have paid
your dues. Keep your mind,
heart, soul and body in bal-
ance. The universe wants to
fulfill your greatest dreams.
Yeah, it's happening. Enjoy to
the max!
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Your fine sense of duty, loyal-
ty and patience is greatly
appreciated. Much truth con-
tinues to unfold. Be prepared
for positive advancement and
change. Your mind is sharp.
When asked to make large
decisions your first impres-
sions always guide and direct
you. Indecision will never
hold you back. All is so well.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
There are three main reasons
for your success. First, your
courage. You act on your
dreams. Second, it's love of
life. Third, you are always
there to help others when
needed and you never com-
plain. This is pretty heady
stuff. You have all the depth,
passions and visions of the
greatest souls who have ever
lived.

An MSG warning and some delectable desserts
Hello, smart shop-
pers. How many of
you have had
adverse reactions to
monosodium glutamate,
better known as MSG?
Didn't it make you happy
when it was eliminated
from your favorite Chinese
restaurant's food? Do you
know you're unknowingly
consuming it daily?
Natural glutamic (gluta-
mate) acid, is an amino
acid is used by the body to
build proteins. Glutamate
is the most common
stimulating neurotrans-
mitter in the central
nervous system. The
problem is, free glutamic
acid (monosodium gluta-
mate) produced as a
byproduct of other
processes may enhance
the flavor of foods, but it
has been suspect for many
years and studies have
linked it to obesity,

Extensive research has
not been done and the
Food and Drug Adminis-
tration has allowed com-
panies to mask the pres-
ence of MSG in foods.
Years ago, when the
product Accent came on
the market, it was amazing
how much better foods
tasted.
MSG can produce
dangerous allergic reac-
tions in some people and
yet it's in 90 percent of
prepackaged foods you
purchase. Shocked? So was

dered bouillons, Latin
American spices and on
and on.
Check out your pantry.
Even foods purchased in
health food stores can
contain MSG. It goes
under many different
names such as (other
natural flavors),
hydrolyzed yeast and
hydrolyzed protein. Read
the labels. It's almost
impossible to get away
from this stuff.
Until next week.
RICE PUDDING
Regular, low fat or
fat free
I created this recipe
years ago since I couldn't
find a recipe creamy
enough.
1-1/2 cups cooked rice
4 cups milk (regular, low
fat or skim)
1 3-ounce package
vanilla
pudding (cook and
serve, not instant)
2 tablespoons sugar or
equivalent amount of
sugar substitute
Few shakes of cinnamon
Dash of nutmeg
1/2-cup raisins
1 teaspoon vanilla
It is best to cook rice
pudding in a double boiler.
If you don't have one, be
sure to use a flame tamer
on regular stoves, or cook
at a very low heat, keeping
a close watch; it always
seems to stick a little.
Place all ingredients
except raisins and vanilla
in a saucepan. Cook,
stirring frequently, until
mixture comes to a boil.
Lower heat to simmer and
cook, uncovered, until
thickened, about 15
minutes. Add raisins and
cook 10 minutes longer.
Remove from heat; add
vanilla.
Serve warm or cold with
a sprinkling of cinnamon
and a dollop of cream.
MANDARIN
ORANGE CAKE
(NIB)
Regular or low fat
Adele Plofsky sent me
this recipe quite a while
ago and asked if I could
make it low fat. I did and if
it tastes any better high-fat
I might eat the whole cake.
1 package yellow cake
mix without pudding
11-ounce can mandarin
oranges with juice
3 eggs, an equivalent
amount of egg substitute
or 4 egg whites
1/2-cup canola oil or
substitute applesauce
1 tablespoon grated
orange peel (optional)
FROSTING
1 8-ounce can crushed
pineapple with juice
1 small (4 serving size)
package vanilla instant
pudding
1 8-ounce carton
whipped topping,
regular,
low fat or fat free
Combine cake mix,
mandarin orange juice
(reserve the oranges),
grated orange peel, eggs
and oil. Beat 1-1/2 min-
utes at medium-high
speed of electric mixer.
Add oranges. Reduce
speed to low and beat 1-
1/2 minute longer.
Pour batter into layer
cake pans (or a 9-inch by
13-inch pan) that have
been treated with cooking
spray. Bake in a preheated
350-degree oven for 25 to
30 minutes, until a tooth-
pick inserted in center
comes out clean.
Cool in layer cake pans
10 minutes. Cool in pan
when using the rectangu-
lar size.
To make the frosting,
combine crushed pineap-
ple and pudding mix in a
bowl. Beat 2 minutes at
medium speed of electric
mixer; let stand until
mixture thickens. Thor-
oughly fold in whipped
topping. Frost cake.
Chill at least 2 hours
before serving. This freezes
great.

Back to basics
with links golf
Love watching the British
Open championship. To
me, there is something
very romantic about links
golf. The subtle nuances
intrigue me. The effects of
weather and luck combining
to make for a dramatic round
that is unlike any other you
will play.
The problem lies in that
there are few places to play
links golf without pulling out
the passport and finding
flight. Many courses tout
themselves as links-style
courses. Most of them are
simply courses built by the
sea, not true links courses.
Fortunately, for Floridians,
we have a true links course
right in the middle of our
state. True, it doesn't sit hard
by the sea. Nor has it been
around for hundreds of years
and seen its fairways and
greens reshaped by the wind,
rain and sheep. The course of
which I speak is the New
Course at Grand Cypress Golf
Club in Lake BuenaVista.
The New Course was
designed by Jack Nicklaus
and opened for play in 1988.
Built in the midst of a rolling,
open meadow, the New
Course is Jack's tribute to the
famed Old Course at St.
Andrews, Scotland.
Here, Jack created a
Scottish links masterpiece
complete with double greens,
stone bridges and walls, gorse
mounds, burns, and those
pesky pot bunkers, some as
deep as 12 feet. It's a creation
truly in the spirit of the
Scottish original.
Very little water comes into
play on the course, but it may
be found. The interior of the
course offers few trees,
creating huge fairways and
plenty of room to miss your
target and still have a shot. Of
course your wayward shots
may find one of those deep
pot bunkers, or another
fairway, or even a mound
covered in gorse. I even found
myself with a birdie putt from
well over 100 feet when I hit
the ball onto the wrong side
of a double green.
The New Course has three
sets of tees, and plays to
nearly 6,800 yards from the
GOLF
JAMES
STAMMER
LI
tips. The shortest trip around
the course measures in at just
over 5,300 yards.
While the numbers may
sound short with today's
equipment, you mustn't tee it
up thinking you're going to
bring the course to its knees.
A links course's defense is not
in its length. Without trees
and with some of the bunkers
you can easily find, the course
is quite well defended. Like a
true links course, Mother
Nature decides how difficult
or easy your round will be.
The course plays to a par of
72, with a wonderful variety
of holes at different lengths. I
was thankful for the light
breeze at my back on a couple
of the longer par-4s. Of
course, there is a par-4 that
tempts you to drive the green
and another where trying
such foolishness will likely
introduce you to the burn.
Three of the four par-5s
tempt you to get home in two
with a hybrid or long iron.
Your decision could be made
easy should you find a bunker
off the tee. Doing so can turn
any hole into a par-6 or
worse.
I quickly learned to take my
medicine and make certain
that I hit my next shot out of
the bunker, even if it meant
going backwards.
The par-3s are wonderful
and challenging, each going
in a different direction using
the wind to affect club
selection and distance.
At the New Course, you
need not be afraid of spraying
the ball a bit. I actually hit the
same fairway from three
different tees during my
round. The greens are huge
with subtle undulations and
are kept at a respectable
speed.
In true Scottish links
fashion, you can choose
many ways to play any shot.

From page B8
There are times when you
have to bump and run the
ball, and others where you'll
need to hit it high and land it
softly. You'll use every club
and every shot in your bag
here.
When your trek concludes
at the 18th tee, you can
picture in your mind's eye
the final and first holes
surrounded by bleachers
filled with fans. You can feel
the history of the game and
all those who have played on
a links course before.
The New Course doesn't
have the history of the old
course, but it has the "feel."
Best of all, it's just a short
drive away from home.
