For centuries, people

around the globe to have
their prayers placed
between its 2,000 year-old-

their armchairs.

Suspected swine flu case
at camp forces precautions
By Jay Meisel
Meisel@hometownnewsol.com
PORT ST. LUCIE In the wake
of the first suspected H1N1 flu
case at a Port St. Lucie summer
camp, health officials are urging
people to take precautions.
It's important to take steps to
prevent transmission of the dis-
ease, said Karlette Peck, epidemi-
ologist for the St. Lucie County
Health Department.
Basically, that involves washing
hands, not going to work or
school if ill and coughing or
sneezing into cuffs, she said.
"If everyone did that, we could
reduce transmission," she said.
The suspected case of H1N1,
originally known as the swine flu,
occurred July 20 at the city's sum-
mer camp, which runs from June
22 to Aug. 14 at Southport Middle
School.

PORT ST. LUCIE -When Spanish settlers arrived
in the 1700s, a tribe called the Ais lived near the Rio
de Ais, now called the Indian River.
But by 1760, the tribe no longer existed as a result
of members being kidnapped for slavery and
deaths due to disease, according to historical
accounts.
A new permanent art exhibit at FAU's Treasure
Coast campus helps keep alive the memory of the
tribe, while focusing on the Indian River Lagoon.

Program provides mentors for at-risk youth
By Jay Meisel

PORT ST. LUCIE -
Assigned as a mentor to an
at-risk youth, Roxanne Car-
lyle recalled she didn't know
what to expect.
She said at first the boy,
who was in high school,
avoided her telephone calls
and would only text message
her.
Ms. Carlyle, who is in her
40s, said the teenager taught
her how to text.
"I almost think I got more
out of it than he did," she
said.
She was participating in a
mentoring program for chil-
dren ages 9-15 started by the
Port St. Lucie Police Depart-
ment to help prevent at-risk
youth from becoming gang
members.
Alice Kenyon, juvenile
services specialist, said to
start the program, she
approached a class at Florida
Atlantic University's Port St.
Lucie campus looking for
students such as Ms. Carlyle
who wanted to become
counselors.
The FAU students who
signed up for the program
were assigned youth who
had some contact with juve-
nile officers and were
thought to be at-risk for
becoming gang members.
Mentors were asked to talk
on the telephone with the
teenagers, Ms. Kenyon said.

things," she said. "It's about

ST. LUCIE COUNTY-
There's no danger of teach-
ers being replaced with com-
puters, a St. Lucie County
School District official said
last week.
But a St. Lucie County
study has shown students
benefited in mathematics
and science by using com-
puter-assisted learning pro-
grams, said Owen Roberts,
assistant superintendent of
curriculum and accountabili-
ty.
The study focused, in part,
on the use of the Houghton
Mifflin Harcourt Destination
Reading and Destination
Math Solutions programs.
Dr. Roberts said schools
using those software pro-
grams showed significant
improvement in student
achievement on FCAT scores.
Schools where students
used the computer software
programs at least 250 min-
utes per week had the most
improvement, he said.
Significant improvement
occurred also at Title 1
schools where larger num-
bers of students come from
low-income households and
qualify for free or reduced
price lunches, he said.
All schools using comput-
er-assisted learning for at
least three days per week
showed student improve-
ment in reading for grades
three to eight and in math for
grades three to nine, Dr.
Roberts stated in a summary
of the study.
Schools using the most
computer-assisted instruc-
tion had a median grade of A,
while those with the least had
a median grade of B-, the
study showed.
Dr. Roberts said he believes
the programs were effective
because the lessons were tied
to state education standards,
allowed students to move at
their own pace, included pic-
tures and audio and provided
immediate feedback.
In order for the programs to
be effective, he said, teachers
needed to be trained on how
to use them to supplement
classroom instruction, he
said.
Technology will probably
play a larger role in the class-
room in the future, he said.
But, Dr. Roberts added,
there will always be teachers,
although their roles could
change in some way.

They talked about positive

thing else, it was up to him,"
she said.
By the end of the first ses-
sion, Ms. Kenyon said, many
of the youth looked forward to
talking with their mentors.
All but one of the teenagers
stayed away from trouble, she
said. Ms. Carlyle said she con-

the end, she said she created a

An Open Letter to Florida Car Dealers
Eliminate the "Dealer Fee".
Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "MV CU
am suggesting a change that
will reward both you and your expectatf
customers.
Virtually every car dealer of educa
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a Sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much high
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.
S
'I
It
ca
h
Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
tomers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
nation are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff" that has come to
er today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.

two counties and resident
surveys for ideas on possi-
ble routes and services.
They're seeking input
from elected officials,
business owners and resi-
dents, as part of a year-
long process to develop a
regional transportation
plan.
"We're encouraging the
public to come out and tell
us what they think," said
Peter Buchwald, St. Lucie
County's director of transit
planning.
One of the key objectives
will be to examine funding
sources for the project and
identify potential pitfalls.
Among the suggestions
are plans to extend the
routes of the Treasure
Coast Connector, a bus
service that runs primarily
along Federal Highway
from Fort Pierce to the
northern part of Martin
County.
If residents support the
idea of a transit system to
link the two counties,
transportation staffers
hope to have a proposed
plan by the end of this
year.
Some also hope to start
looking at an even broader
system that covers the
Treasure Coast.
"We want connections
into Indian River (County),
as well," Ms. Lathou said.
"It will be seamless for a
person who is in Indian
River to easily access Mar-
tin and St. Lucie and vice
versa."
Officials of Martin Coun-
ty's Metropolitan Planning
Organization are hosting
the Aug. 3 meeting with
the hope that residents
will outline preferences
and present ideas for plan-
ners, said Ann Perrotta,
the group's director.
"It's all about transit and
connectivity between the
two counties," she said.
"We want people to
express interest if it's an
option that they'd like to
see developed in the
region."

and the French Belle Epoque,
co-existed between 1890-
1910, and featured light, airy
floral or scroll-based jewelry,
often in "white-on-white"looks,
diamonds on platinum, dia-
monds and pearls on white
gold, as well as large colored
gems surrounded by delicate
swags of diamond-set metals.
The widespread use of plat-
inum in jewelry began at this
time. Platinum is considered
the king of precious metals. A
few early civilizations occa-
sionally used it to make small
ornaments, but large ore
deposits and effective ways of
fashioning platinum weren't
discovered until the 1800's.
Platinum's popularity soared in
the early 1900's, but during
World Was II the US govern-
ment declared it a strategic
metal and removed it from the
jewelry market. That action
was taken because platinum
has many scientific, technolog-
ical, and industrial uses. White
gold was originally developed
to serve as a substitute for
platinum in jewelry. Even after
platinum was again made
available, it remained a rarity in
jewelry for several decades. In
the 1990's platinum's populari-
ty boomed once more. Today 1
out of every 4 brides receives
a platinum engagement ring.
Despite the vogue, most cus-
tomers consider platinum
because of its unique features
and distinctions. Many like
platinum's neutral gray-white
color. Compared to white gold,
which is highly reflective, plat-
inum also has a more subdued
and sophisticated glow.

Too many trees
What about the huge amount of landscaping in Vero
Beach? It's unbelievable. There are shrubs and plants and
trees everywhere. Where are they coming from?
If we are supposed to be budgeting, how can the land-
scaping crews afford all these massive items? Why are we
adding so much, when maintenance people have to take
care of them, but we are being hit with higher utility bills?
We are being run down the river. We need answers and we
need them now.
Revamp the city
It's time for a recall of all the city council members. They
are ruining the city.
Help for animal victim
My cat was shot, probably with an air rifle. The vet
showed me an ex-ray, which showed a broken leg. I called
the police, but could not get past the screener. I called ani-
mal control, but they said they weren't concerned because
the animal was cared for. There is a creep who walks around
the neighborhood with a gun. Who is going to help?
Sick of pop music
No one made a big deal when Steve Bruton died of can-
cer. He was one of the best musicians and songwriter in
America.
No one makes a big deal about jam band members or jam
bands for that matter. No one likes pop music. Everyone is
sick of Michael Jackson. Pop music deserves the same fate
as disco music. Does anyone have a steamroller?
Let's take all the pop CDs to the Mets Stadium and kill
pop music the way disco was killed.
Jam bands sell out every venue they play. They get no air-
play on the radio. Don't tell me that jam bands don't rule.
I'm sick of pop music. I'm sick of bands who have musicians
who don't play their own instruments. Jam musicians write
their own music. Pop music should meet its fate.
When grief
becomes complicated
The first thing you
learn about the
grieving process is
that it is a process. It
doesn't happen at once and
it doesn't happen in a
straight line. You don't feel
better and better every day.
You have good days and
bad ones.
The next thing you learn
is that there is no
timetable. Everyone
grieves differently and
there isn't a right and
wrong way to do it or a time
when you should "get over
it."
In point of fact, you will
never get over the loss of a
loved one, but you will
begin to make a life for
yourself. Sometimes,
though, a grieving person
may find it hard to move
on.
In my case, stress over a
scan that required a biopsy
and the death of my cat
exacerbated the grief from
my husband's death. I
began to get more
depressed and go into what
is called, in the lingo,
complicated grief.
Complicated grief needs
attention and if you or a
loved one is feeling the
symptoms, you need to talk
to a professional. Having
complicated grief is not a
sign of weakness or failure
on your part and asking for
help is the best thing you
can do.

It's time to get serious and work together
A at a year and a
half or so it's been.
V Times like we have
experienced are fortunately
just once, or less, in a
generation. The good side
to these trying times is that
those of us who make it
through this will be a lot
smarter and better busi-
ness people than we might
have been going into it. We
have learned from our
mistakes. We will know how
to better plan and prepare
for tough times in the
future. We will appreciate
the good times and not
take them for granted,
knowing that nothing lasts
forever.
So OK. We've been
through the worst of it. All
signs point to a renewed
economy. Some of us have
even prospered through
this. Some have fought
hard to make it through.
Some who didn't make it
can blame themselves. If a
business owner isn't willing
to make tough decisions,
sacrifice and commit to
their business, they
probably shouldn't have
been in business in the first
place. Success is not easy,
though during the boom
years some made it look
easy. Success does not
come without some pain,
suffering and sacrifice.
One of the things I have
seen and discovered over
the past 18 months is that if
Paying t
The monthly bill
paying ritual seems to
never end, but it has
become easier with the
Internet and online bill
paying services that most
utilities have added to their
systems.
Here's the way life used to
work every month: the bills
would come in (as they still
do), and then I'd go through
each one with the check-
book and a book of stamps.
I'd write a check, write it
in the checkbook, put it in
the envelope with that
month's payment stub,
write my return address on
the outside of the envelope,
stick a stamp on it and drop
it in the mail. Every month,
like clockwork, it was a
chore that consumed a
bunch of stamps, checks,
time, and usually resulted
in a little writer's cramp.
But how are things now?
Well, the bills still come
in every month like clock-
work, but the hassle of
writing checks and drop-
ping them in the mail is
almost a thing of the past.
Sure, the chore of sitting
down and "paying the bills"
is still there, but with my
trusty computer and my
Internet connection, I can

online is a snap

get the job knocked out in
half the time it used to take,
and I can get a book of
stamps to last months now.
So what's involved?
Well, it helps to have a
credit card (or a "check
card" with the Visa or
MasterCard logo, that most
banks are happy to pro-
vide), a computer and an
Internet connection. It also
helps to know the Web
addresses of the companies
that you wish to pay online,
but the nice thing about
that is they usually print
the Web address some-
where on your monthly
statement.
With your bill in hand,
connect to the Internet and
navigate to the company
Web site and follow the
onscreen instructions.
Here's a hint: You will
usually find a link that says,
"pay online." Follow that
link, and you are on your
way.
But there is a catch. Each
Web site is set up different-
ly than the others, so you
have to think about what
you are trying to do on each
site and follow their
particular set of links. Some
sites may have you sign up
first to create an account
on their site but you only
have to do this once. The
next month, when you log
in with your username and
password, your informa-
tion should appear.
Not comfortable using a
credit card online? In lieu of
a credit card, many sites
will allow for electronic
fund transfers by asking for
your bank account and
routing numbers (but is
that really safer?), or you
may even have luck
checking to see if your
bank's online system allows
for Web-based bill pay to
the companies you pay
each month. Most online
banking systems these days
provide it, and if they don't,
you can also check PayPal.
They've been offering a bill
pay service for a while, and
you may be surprised at
who you can pay with this.
Let's go back to paying
the bills individually at the
Web sites provided by the
companies.
Hometown News will
continue to be free to our
readers. Over the past 18
months we have signed up
more subscribers than any
other newspaper in the
country. Nearly 150,000 of
your friends and neighbors
have signed up for a sub-
scription to HTN. If you
haven't signed up yet, do so
today. Go to our Web site or
call us at (866) 913-6397.
Hometown News is also
helping the local residents
with our 50 percent off gift
certificate program. We
have hundreds of local
restaurants, golf courses,
hotels and more on our
Web site offering full-value
gift certificates for half
price. If you are one of the
few folks out there that
haven't taken advantage of
this yet, check it out today.
It is a great value and can
stretch your budget
considerably.
Your team here at
Hometown News is local.
We are the only locally
owned newspaper in our
community. We value the
relationships we have and
the ones yet to be discov-
ered. We know that togeth-
er we can make a differ-
ence and together we
will prosper. Let's partner
up!
Steve Erlanger is publish-
er and chief operations
officer of Hometown News.
Let's see, you can navi-
gate to www.fpl.com to pay
your electric bill (look for
the "pay my bill" link, then
"FPL pay online"). You have
to set up your account first,
but then every month, with
bill-in-hand, log on and
make a payment.
The city of Port St. Lucie
has a similar setup for your
utility bills. Just take a look
at your next bill and find a
Web address.
Now that's just a couple
of the companies that we
pay each month, and I'm
glad I took the time to learn
each system. Now when my
monthly bills come in, I log
onto the Internet, spend
about 3 minutes at each
Web site, log the payments
in my checkbook register,
and I'm done, without half
the aggravation caused by
doing it the old-fashioned
way.
Now, if only I could find a
way to use my computer to
eliminate all my bills
altogether; that would be
something!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR
TAX COLLECTOR: SAVE $$$$
ON DMV TRANSACTIONS
This year the Florida Legislature increased motor
vehicle fees effective September 1. If your birth
month is prior to December 1, 2009, you may avoid
the higher fees by renewing vehicle registrations
before September 1. Choosing the optional 2-year
renewal will lock in the lower fees for two years.
If your birth month is September, the renewal notice
mailed to you in July will reflect the new higher fees.
If you plan to mail in your renewal prior to
September 1, call 772-462-1650 to obtain the lower
amount to mail in. Internet renewals or in-person
renewals at a tax collector's office will be at the old
rates until September 1. Go to www.tcslc.com to

said Dr. loannides. "The
process is repeated until all
the cancerous cells are
removed. In addition to
removing the cancerous cells
in the affected area, this
process preserves as much
healthy tissue as possible
around the site of the lesion."
"That is the key issue,"
added Dr. Sanders. "This is
the most 'tissue-sparing'
procedure for the treatment
of skin cancer. We know we
are not taking out more tissue

patients will save as much

After traveling out of state

Just a few feet down the

With 126 campsites, a

beach can span an entire
weekend. A 1,200-foot
fishing pier is open 24
hours a day and includes
fish cleaning tables with
running water.
Jetty Park also owns two
beach wheelchairs so dis-
abled visitors can access
the sands of Cape Canaver-

wheels roll easily through
the soft sand and a built-in
beach umbrella holder
offers shade.

The resort also has it's

One of the most interest-

took more energy than I

WHY DO I HEAR...
BUT NOT UNDERSTAND?
Study by Cambridge University in England Reveals Key Answer
Until recently, there
was no practical way to
identify dead regions
of hearing cells in the
ear. However, a new
British-developed pro-
cedure using standard
test equipment now
allows for identifica-

cell regions. The study
suggests that the pres-
ence or absence of dead
regions may have seri-
ous implications in the
fitting of hearing aids.
This research reveals
that amplifying dead
cells is a mistake which
will result in poorer
speech understanding
in noise. A new type of

Local couple 'clown around' the theater
By Shelley Koppel
Entertainment writer
PORT ST. LUCIE Karen
and Dennis Dierksen work
well together on stage.
They appeared together
at the Pineapple Playhouse
in "Pool's Paradise" and "See
How they Run," and they
both won acting awards
each time. The couple has
been married for 40 years
and Ms. Dierksen has an
explanation.
"We do good together,"
she said. "We have good
chemistry."
It was Ms. Dierksen who
got the couple involved in
community theater after
they moved to Port St. Lucie
fromWichita, Kan. in 1984.
"I was involved in a Sweet
Adeline chorus in town,"
she said. "In 1990, I noticed
auditions for 'Hello Dolly,'
one of my favorites. I got a
part and that was my first
play at the Pineapple."
Mr. Dierksen didn't mean
to get involved at all. The
former Marine says his wife
hounded him to go to an
audition with her and they
needed male actors. Mr.
Dierksen caught the bug.
"I'm a slow learner," he
said. "She dragged me to
Shiloh for 'Crazy for You'
and I got a pretty big part."
"I didn't get one," his wife
added.
At the Pineapple, the two
are as likely to be found
behind-the scenes as on
stage.
Mr. Dierksen works in the
box office and the self-
employed tax preparer also

Kids stage

The 32 campers at Camp
Barn Theatre will present a
musical variety show,
"Laugh Inn," as the culmi-
nation of their four weeks
of singing, dancing and
learning stagecraft, as well.
Camp director Tara Wei-
denfeller and her cast and
crew have been involved in
every aspect of how a stage
production evolves.
"The kids are gaining an
incredible appreciation for
theater art and loving
every minutes of it," she
said.
The production will be
presented at the Barn The-
atre, 2400 S.E. Ocean Blvd.,
Stuart, on July 31-Aug. 1 at
7 p.m. and Aug. 2 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 general
admission and available at
the door.
In other Barn news,
auditions for the first play
of the new season, "Cash

Cooney, will be held on

the theater.
His wife has managed the
box office volunteers and
been stage manager for a
number of shows. In the
2007-08 season, she
appeared as Opal in "Opal's
Million Dollar Duck."
Ms. Dierksen has a paying
gig as well. She is a profes-
sional clown and face
painter and works for Royal
Caribbean cruises, enter-
taining youngsters on board
ship. Last year they toured
southern Europe and this
year they are going to Alas-

Composer, writer
in audience
for premiere
Composer Stephen
Schwartz and writer David
Stern mingled with the
audience before the open-
ing night performance of
"Geppetto and Son" by
StarStruck Performing Arts
Center at the Lyric Theatre
on July 17. As they spoke to
people, they both
expressed their admiration
for the children and the
community.
"As we've been around
the country, we've seen
Alicia Swink, and their
grandson, Tyler, have also
appeared at the Pineapple,
and Ms. Swink got her
mother into clowning.
"My daughter had a car-
nival birthday party for my
grandson and she knew I
loved clowning. It was the
first time I did it and it
spread by word-of-mouth. I
started doing parties and
conventions and festivals. I
was a teacher for 25 years. I
love kids and I love being
around them."
Clowning and face paint-
ing are serious business for
Ms. Dierksen. She belongs
very few communities that
offer this type of opportu-
nity," Mr. Stern said. "I
hope you realize how
incredibly lucky you are."
Mr. Schwartz echoed his
comment.
"This kind of program
for children's theater is
extremely unusual," he
said. "This is quite a
remarkable organization."
The production was
poignant and funny.
Comic relief was provid-
ed by Katrina Colletti as
the Blue Fairy. She had just
the right amount of self-
absorption as she granted
wishes.
Kevin Connor as Gep-
petto and Nathanael Bean
as Pinocchio were a touch-
ing duo, learning to appre-
ciate each other. As Strom-
boli, Philippe Arroyo
managed to speak and sing
for two, himself and a pup-
pet, and continued to
amaze the audience with
his talent.
One of the additions to
the script made by director
Jennifer Jones was the
addition of four fairies-in-
to several national organi-
zations, attends conven-
tions to learn the latest tech-
niques in face painting,
balloon twisting and magic
and takes online courses, as
well.
Mr. Dierksen carries her
equipment around and
helps her set up at each
venue.
"I'm her roadie," he said.
Still, they remain involved
at the Pineapple.
"Once you become
involved, you become a
family," Ms. Deirksen said.
"Everyone is there for every-
one else."
training. Allie Beltran as
Viola, Rachel Maunus as
Rose, Logan Messer as
Arancia and Chloe John-
son as Sue, nearly stole the
show.
The costumes, by Judith
Williams and Lindsey Beck
Mason, were lovely and lit-
tle girls in the audience
gasped when the Blue
Fairy came out in her
gown.
Choreographer Eliza-
beth Casalini managed to
create order out of chaos,
especially in the Pleasure
Island scene, where more
than 30 performers were
on stage, seemingly all in
motion.
After the performance,
Mr. Schwartz and Mr. Stern
remained to answer ques-
tions. Mr. Schwartz spoke
of doing a show as a learn-
ing process, where the
artists constantly try to
improve it and the work is
never truly finished.
From the applause, it
appeared the audience, at
least, was satisfied with the
result.

Week of 7-31-2009
Aries-March 21-April 19
Your wonderful heart gives
you a never-ending supply of
motivation. You will make it
in life, no matter how many
challenges. Why? You never
give up. Quitting is not in
your vocabulary. Challenges
make you stronger, lift your
spirit, put joy in your heart
and continue to create new
causes. We all need your
leadership and humanity.
Taurus-April 20-May 20
Stand tall with your beliefs.
Plan for tomorrow's activities
the evening before. Miracles
happen tomorrow because
the universe has time to get
involved in the action. This is
an excellent way to live. The
excitement of unexpected
results happening is directly
related to this plan. Let spirit
help you and continue to
soar.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
At the last minute, when it
seems like things are not
going to work out, they usu-
ally turn around and work in
your favor. Why? Because the
universe has a mind of its
own. It is far greater than our
own. When a Gemini begins
to accept this over the strug-
gles in the mind and heart,
true magic happens. Try it.
You might like it.
Cancer-June 22-July 22
You have so much respect
and love from family and
friends. You are always there
to lend a helping hand. The
question is, do you let others
know about your needs? Do
you ask for help when need-
ed? You are not an isolated
island, you know. This is
what friends are for. Yeah! It's
celebration time. Now every-
one feels loved.
Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
You know what you want.
You know what you need to
do to get it. The only step
needed is to refocus on the
top priorities and take action.
You excel at this. The key to
success for a Leo is to shut
the mental process down a
little. Let your visions come
alive and then go for the
gold. Watch out world, here I
come.

from those who give negative
responses. This tells you who
your real friends are.

You continue to grow spiritu-

priorities. Refuse to let unim-

in your quest for mastery
over life. Share your dreams
with others ready to learn
from your experience and

of your dreams and great
happiness is sure to be the
result.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Your strong positive attitude
has brought you safely
through past challenges. This
pattern will continue. Recent
time spent honing your sills
and talents will bring you
many rewards in the future.
Keep reading, learning and
growing. Your mind is open

Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Your decision-making skills
are strong right now. The
activities you place in motion
have an excellent chance of

letting others know how
much you appreciate their

respect and cooperation. You
can't miss.
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
You have taken life to a high-

path. Be bold and you will

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT
Mixed fry is a summertime treat
H ello smart shoppers,
it's time to get even
smarter.
When the newscaster
warned about not putting
outgoing mail in your box the
night before, I knew it was
time for a repeat warning. It
works like this: The crook
steals outgoing paid bills from
your mailbox and places a
piece of cellophane tape over
the front and back of your sig-
nature. Then the check is
placed in a pan of nail polish
remover for about 30 min-
utes, which lifts anything
that's not printer's ink, except
for your tape-protected signa-
ture. The check is then blow-
dried and flattened in a book
and the tape is carefully
removed. Voila! A blank check,
signed by you.
Only one type of ink, the
kind in gel pens, is counter-
feit-proof. I purchased a pack
of gel pens in an office supply
store and, of course, before I
passed the information on I
had to test the inks. The infor-
mation was right.
Summertime calls for finger
food and there's nothing to
compare with a mixed fry. It's
not low fat, that's for sure, but
occasionally, you just gotta
have it.
Vegetables, breaded and
fried are delicious and always
a summertime treat. The one I
miss the most is pumpkin
flower or squash blossom frit-
ters. Years ago you could buy
them at local produce stands.
Now I think the only way you
can get them is if you grow the
vegetable yourself.
While some veggies need to
be precooked, others can be
cooked raw.
Enjoy. See you next week.
PUMPKIN FLOWER
FRITTERS
(squash blossom)
1 dozen pumpkin flowers
1 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 egg
Salt and pepper
2 medium size eggplants
flour
Peel eggplant, cut in
1/2-inch by 1/2-inch strips.
Dredge with flour then egg
wash and last in seasoned
bread crumbs.
EGG WASH
2 eggs or egg whites or
Water
Remove outer casing on
bottom of flower, peel stem.
Wash well. Mix remaining
ingredients together, adding a
little salt and pepper to taste.
Add about 2 tablespoons
water at a time until you have
a fairly thin batter. Place one
to two cups canola oil in
medium sized saucepan.
Heat. Dip flowers into bat-
ter and drop in oil. Fry until
golden on both sides. Drain
on paper towels.
NOTE: The oil can be
strained and refrigerated for
the next time.
EGGPLANT STIX
Serves 4
Eggplant, in my opinion, is
a vegetable that needs a lot of
help to make it palatable. If
you've ever tried steamed
eggplant, you know what I
mean. It contains a great deal
of iron and can be bitter. For
this reason there's always this
preparation.
