too bizarre to be true.

A New Hampshire man

was charged more than
$23 quadrillion.
Josh Muszynski checked
his account online a few
hours later and saw the 17-

$23,148,855,308,184,500.
Mr. Muszynski says he
spent two hours on the
phone with Bank of
America trying to sort out
the string of numbers and
the overdraft fee.
Another from sfgate.com:

Police said a man

Florida Bright Futures
Scholarships, a merit-based

Instead of paying a cer-

percent at a community

In addition to these
changes, the Legislature
also approved an up to 15
percent increase in tuition

According to the Bright

the Florida Academic schol-

ST. LUCIE COUNTY--A
mother recalled last week
that her son seemed like
any other child at first
when he was born.
But at 18 months, she
said, he began having
problems differentiating
colors and shapes.
"Suddenly, he couldn't
remember other things he
used to know," she said.
A doctor in the Philip-
pines, however, assured
the mother, who did not
want her name used, that
nothing was wrong.
But, she said, she wasn't
so sure.
"As a mother, I was con-
cerned," she said.
Years later, the mother is
receiving help for her now
8-year-old son from the
Center for Autism and
Related Disabilities at
Florida Atlantic University
in Port St. Lucie. The cen-
ter serves Indian River, St.
Lucie and Martin counties.
Staff members at the
center have helped the
child's teachers develop
visuals that assist him in
digesting lessons.
In recent years, the diag-
nosis of autism, a baffling
neurological disability, has
increased. There've been
numerous reports of
debates over whether
childhood vaccines cause
autism. To date, no scien-
tific findings back that

In St. Lucie County, the
subject gained widespread
attention last year, when a
local elementary school
teacher asked students in
her class to vote on
whether a pupil with an
autism-related disorder
should be able to remain
in class because of his
behavioral problems.
Jennifer Agganis, site
coordinator for the center
at FAU, said autism diag-
noses are increasing faster
than any other neurologi-

dren. It's estimated that

PORT ST. LUCIE Since
the late 1970s, Michael
Kohler of Port St. Lucie has
been a bicycle motocross
racer.
Last year his 5-year-old
daughter and 6-year-old son
began racing.
The problem has been
that the closest track is in
Palm Beach County.
To bring the alternative
sport closer, Mr. Kohler is
building a track in an area
just south of the Crosstown
Parkway exit on Interstate
95.
The 1,000-foot track is
expected to open this fall.
"We're in the process of
building it."
Bicycle motocross is simi-
lar to motocross, only it
involves bicycles instead of
motorcycles.
Basically, the track will
include various hurdles and
obstacles.
Whoever clears those hur-
dles and obstacles first wins
the race, Mr. Kohler said.
Cyclists can reach speeds
up to 35 miles per hour, but
20 miles per hour is the
average on the track, he
said.
BMX is just one part of the
alternative sports park.
Paintball has been up and
running for about a month.
Other alternative sports are
expected to open in the
area, he said.
BMX is a family-oriented
sport and Port St. Lucie "is
the perfect place for it," he
said.

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you

Virtually every car dealer ofeduca
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much high
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.
Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the

and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and

many youth with autism
got their first taste of

Autism
From page Al
tion and communication,
she Austism is a spectrum
disability with each individ-
ual having different abilities,
Ms. Agganis said.
A related disability is
Asperger's syndrome, which
involves a later onset of
autism, from ages 5 to 7, she
said.
There's no known cause or
cure, Ms. Agganis said, but
the earlier it's diagnosed and
the child receives help, the
better the outcome.
While some believe vacci-
nations play a role, she said,
there's "no research that
proves vaccinations cause
autism."
Research also indicates
that it's more likely that
diagnoses of autism are
increasing rather than the
actual percentage of chil-
dren with the disorder, she
said.
The center works with
families and schools to help.
In a lot of cases, she said,
the children may know
words, but not have the abil-
ity to use them. Because of
that, Ms. Agganis said, the
children may develop inap-
propriate behaviors.
Visuals help teachers and
parents communicate with
the child, she said.
During a workshop last
week, Cathy Allore, a clinical
support specialist with the
center, talked about how
parents and teachers will
create visuals for their autis-
tic children.
Ms. Allore, whose son has
autism, said visuals help
them better understand
concepts, follow rules and
comprehend expectations.
Visuals also reduce or pre-
vent behavioral problems
caused by the child's frustra-
tion over an inability to
communicate.
One example of a visual
she gave was drawings of
four different types of food
from which the child could
choose.
Another showed a
sequence of tasks of what
the child is expected to
accomplish.
The child may hear and
understand words, but not
be able to remember them,
she said. "They (the visuals)
are there after the words
fade."
Ms. Allore, a resident of
Martin County, said visuals
have helped her son. And
the Port St. Lucie mother
whose son was born in the
Philippines also discovered
the same.
She said she got therapy
for her son and he attended
regular classes in the Philip-
pines, she said, adding there
was a nanny who was
allowed to stay with her.
Meanwhile, she said, she
eventually left her son in the
care of her sister because
she couldn't afford to pay for
the services provided for
him. She found a job in Sin-
gapore to pay for the servic-
es and eventually moved to
Mitch Kloorfain
chief photographer
the United States.
She said she was con-
cerned that if her son
stopped getting services
because of the cost, he
would regress.
Since her son joined her
and has become a student at
Windmill Point Elementary,
she has found the teachers
to be awesome in helping
him.
Ms. Allore said her son has
never talked and "uses the
pictures to communicate
with me."
She said she started out as
a business major in college,
but having a son diagnosed
with autism played a major
role in moving in a different
direction to help those with
the disability.
The center offers train-
ings, consultation and tech-
nical supports to families,
teachers and professionals
in the community. All serv-
ices are free.

members.
Councilwoman Michelle
Berger said she voted for the
tax rate increase so the city
can continue providing
essential services.
Calling it a difficult deci-
sion, Councilwoman Linda
Bartz said any tax increase
would be a strain for her.
But, she added, she's lived
in Port St. Lucie for 24 years,
and "I don't want to stop
progress."
The increase is from $4.22
to $5.34 per $1,000 of taxable
value. The owner of a home
valued at $123,891 with a
$50,000 homestead exemp-
tion would pay about $419 in
2009, compared to $522 in
2008.
That's because the proper-
ty value is expected to drop
to $78,679.
Because of an average 26
percent drop in property val-
ues, city manager Don Coop-
er said Port St. Lucie faced an
$11 million deficit in its
budget.
"Maintaining the present
millage rate would require
the closure of all parks and
recreation facilities and the
layoff of all staff, except those
necessary to maintain the
buildings," Mr. Cooper wrote
in his budget letter. "We
would still be required to
provide maintenance and air
conditioning to those build-
ings until they are sold.
'All other parks land
should then be sold on a
phased basis, as the market
improves. It would also
require the elimination of the
communications depart-
ment, as well as additional
cuts in the general fund
departments, including an
additional reduction in the
Police Department of 25 per-
cent," Mr. Cooper wrote.
Even with the tax rate
increase, he said, the city
must eliminate 117 posi-
tions.
However, some of those
positions have been elimi-
nated already through attri-
tion.
City officials said the num-
ber of positions that would
be finally eliminated will
depend on whether employ-
ee unions agree to a pay
freeze.
Even with the tax increase
this year, Mr. Cooper said,
the city faces a difficult road
ahead if property values con-
tinue to decline. That will
make it increasingly difficult
for the city to maintain its
computers, replace vehicles
and equipment, complete
road projects and meet other
needs, he added.

WATCHES
An important reason why older
wristwatches have caused such a
stir in the past ten years is the
tremendous rise of their prices.
This basically applied to the whole
spectrum of models, though it was
particularly the products of out-
standing manufacturers such as
Cartier, Patek Philippe and Rolex
that attracted special attention
through the development of higher
speculative prices in the world of
auctions and dealers. This ten-
dency for prices to rise, some-
times steeply, increased the popu-
larity of other brands; as the
demand for them grew, so did
their prices. First there are collec-
tors in the truest sense of the
word. They know their area of col-
lecting very well and keep
informed on what appears in the
literature. Then there are numer-
ous aficionados who buy fewer
but very carefully chosen pieces
with great enthusiasm. They
place the highest value on watch-
es with famous names and or
striking exteriors and they want to
wear them. This group of collec-
tors are usually style oriented.
Finally, in the corners of the wrist-
watch scene there are great num-
bers of speculators. The great
historical, technical and crafts-
manly achievements mean noth-
ing to them, since dealing in wrist-
watches is just a quick and safe
business. Money plays only a
minor role in purchasing when
only good business is the goal.
This knowledge of such specula-
tors of the goods they deal in is
usually limited to questions of
what will sell. When trying to sell
watches, condition, materials,
name and, just like coins, the
number of watches produced,
make a great difference in the
value at the time of resale. If you
have a watch that you are inter-
ested in reselling please bring it in
to the store with the box, papers
and any other pertinent informa-
tion that you were given in relation
to the watch and one of our knowl-
edgeable sales people will be will-
ing to look your items over.

New Permanent Teeth...A Life Changing Experience
Modern Advances in
dental technology and
surgical techniques mean
now, more and more peo-
ple who have lost their
natural teeth can live
fuller, richer, and happier
lives. They allow the per-
son to go to favorite
restaurants and order
what they want to eat,
instead of what they can
eat. Dental implants can
restore a person's ability
to eat, smile, kiss and
talk with confidence and
comfort.
A dental implant is a
substitute tooth root that
provides a stable founda-
tion for replacement
teeth. The implant is
anchored into the jaw-
bone through a process
where the bone and the
implant become integrat-
ed, providing the same
stability as natural teeth.
This means that replace-
ment teeth can look, feel,
and function just like real
teeth!
Since dental implants,
like teeth, are embedded
in the jaw, the painful
chewing associated with
removable teeth is elimi-
nated. Unlike traditional
dentures, implants sup-
ports dentures so that
there is little pressure on
the gums.
,^V ^^ ^
Additionally, dental
implants can be used to
solve a variety of dental
problems. For example,
implants can be used to
replace a single missing
tooth instead of making a
traditional bridge. They
can be placed to support
an entire bridge where
the natural teeth are
missing, or they can be
used to give the patient a
better fitting denture so
they can eliminate the
problems traditionally
associated with dentures.
Best of all, you'll be
able to smile more natu-
rally and be comfortable
in normal activities such
as talking, laughing, smil-
ing and eating.
Explore dental im-
plants as a solution to your
personal dental problems.
Call Dr. Rankin today

implants can help you
smile and eat with confi-
dence again!

da Medallion scholars.
In order to offset some of
the cost to students, FAU
will increase financial aid
opportunities at the school
using funds collected by the
tuition increase, said Maris-
sa Smith, financial aid coor-
dinator.
About $500,000 in aid will
be set aside and distributed
on a needs basis.
Mary Lewis, financial aid
director at Indian River
State College, said the
changes are supposed to
save the system more than
$30 million.
"In the 2008-09 year, we
had close to 1,500 students
using Bright Futures, so you
can imagine, throughout
the state of Florida, just how
many students were using
the scholarship and I imag-
ine it was getting very
expensive," said Ms. Lewis.
The program was
launched in 1997, spear-
headed by outgoing Sen.
Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie.
In the first year of existence,
more than 40,000 scholar-
ships valued at approxi-
mately $70 million were
awarded.
In 2008, close to 170,000
students received Bright
Futures scholarships, which
were valued at just more
than $436 million.
At press time, Sen. Pruitt
had not returned phone
calls or e-mails.
Cost per credit hour at
IRSC is lower than FAU, said
Ms. Lewis, but students will
end up paying a small
amount per semester.
A Florida Academic schol-
arship recipient earning a
two-year degree would
receive $78 per credit hour
at a two-year institution. A
Florida Medallion scholar
would receive $59, except at
IRSC they would receive $78
because of it's affiliation as a
community college, Ms.
Lewis said.
For a two-year degree at
IRSC, the cost is $84.76 per
credit hour. A four-year
degree is $94.34. Neither fig-
ure accounts for potential
lab fees incurred.
With the changes, stu-
dents receiving aid must
enrolled in 12 credit hours
per semester minimum and
must repay the school if
they withdraw from class,
which is a new change, Ms.
Lewis said.
"It's known that to get
Bright Futures, you have to
be a good scholar and with
the changes they are really
trying these stricter rules so
that people complete their
education and earn their
scholarships on merit," said
Ms. Lewis.

Fountain fury
This is to the parents who let their children use the foun-
tains in Port St. Lucie. I tried to use the fountains and they
told me I couldn't use them because they are rented out to
daycares. The man in charge told me to come back after 3
p.m. At that time it is thundering and lightning.
Are we supposed to go back down to Martin County and
use theirs? All the parents who want to use the fountains
should be mad. I thought it was public property?
Rude real estate agents
This is an open letter to all Realtors: When you make an
appointment with the seller, please keep that appointment,
or have the courtesy to call and cancel or explain that you
are running late.
Sellers may want to sell their homes, but they also have a
life. Remember, without them you'd have no job.
Food stamp abuse
I've been a cashier and have noticed the trend for all peo-
ple to have food stamp cards. I work two jobs. My teenage
sons both mow grass and wash cars on the weekend and in
the summer. A lot of these people that pay with their cards
are buying stuff to have a barbeque.
I know a lot of people truly need a lift once in a while.
Somehow when your food stamp balance is $564, it really
doesn't seem like you're that needy. I wonder if the people
in the food stamp office look out their window at what
these people are driving Escalades, brand new pickups,
Tahoes?
I have a 1979 four-door sedan. Would I not be more in
need than they are? Are they in the needy situation because
they are driving a car they cannot afford to pay? Do all of
these people get asked for their Social Security numbers so
they can qualify?
Please tell me at least people who are supposed to be here
are the ones reaping these benefits.
Raising fees
I see garbage collection fees are going up again. The usual
reaction from local governments is to close it down, raise
fees, raise taxes or add staff to analyze the report. They don't
want to fix it. It's overwhelming incompetence.
Customers first
Why do businesses with two doors always lock one of
them? You have to hold the door for someone coming out.
And you're already setting a bad tone. People have packages
and can't hold the doors for others. Why not just unlock the
other door? It is that hard? The customers are the most
important people in the store, why aren't you taking care of
them?
Stop spending
The law of gravity must not work in Washington, D.C., as
we see the spending of our congressmen go up as if there
was no tomorrow. It is business-as-usual in the nation's
capitol.
Congress has just authorized a 12 percent increase for the
Department of Justice. Most Americans, by contrast, are
hunkering down and just trying to survive the recession.
Congress continues to spend, spend, spend.
Crime close to home
It is one thing to hear about crime in the big cities such as
New York, Chicago and Los Angles, but it is getting pretty
close to home when the terror is in such safe places as rural
North Carolina.
The cops shot a serial killer, but the real news is that this
was a career criminal, which some judge placed on parole.
The message we should be getting out is that light sen-
tences are unacceptable and lenient judges must be held
accountable.

League of Women Voters during a debate in the St. Lucie County Commission chambers Monday, July 20 in Fort

will be held Tuesday, Aug. 4.
More medical news you can use
Here is the rest of the
best from the recent
newsletters I've
collected. The news comes
so fast and furiously that
it's hard to choose the
items of most interest.
Moderation key
in drinking red wine
From the UCLA Division
of Geriatrics Health Years
newsletter, July 2009:
Many of us have read
articles about the benefits
of red wine, especially for
heart health. That does not
mean it's time to start
drinking.
Recent studies have
linked mild wine consump-
tion to lower risks of
cardiovascular death and
neurological disorders.
However, there are many
people for whom alcohol is
not recommended, includ-
ing those with liver disease,
those taking medications
that may interact with
alcohol and people having
chemotherapy.
One point the
researchers make is that
even though something
may help one condition, it
isn't a magic bullet. Alcohol
use is listed as a risk factor
for a number of cancers, for
example, and people
wishing to lower their risk
of getting cancer are often
advised not to drink or to
drink sparingly.
In the next item, you will
see that the recommenda-
tion for lowering triglyc-
erides includes eliminating
alcohol.
If you don't want to drink
alcohol, but want the
benefit of some of the
properties it has, try adding
grape juice to your diet or
in cooking and eat more
fresh fruits and vegetables
which contain substances
similar to the polyphenols
found in wine.
Triglycerides; the
forgotten lipid
From the Duke University
Medical Center Health-
News, July 2009:
People are familiar with
cholesterol testing and the
numbers that go along with
normal cholesterol levels.
Triglycerides, the body's
main energy-storing
molecules, come from food
and are stored in fat tissue.
Abnormally high triglyc-
eride levels are associated
with a higher risk of heart
attack and stroke, especial-
ly for women.
If you are taking a station
drug to lower cholesterol, it
probably will not lower
your triglyceride level.
Drugs that lower those
levels have more side
effects, so doctors suggest
lifestyle modifications as
the first and best treat-
ment.
Cutting calories, losing
weight, watching choles-
terol intake, limiting sugar
and refined foods, substi-
tuting unsaturated fats for
saturated fats, eliminating
trans fats and alcohol and
getting regular exercise can
lower triglyceride levels to
the under 150 mg/dL
considered normal.
Charred meat linked
to pancreatic cancer
From the Duke University
Medical Center Health-
News, July2009:
You may love your fried
or grilled meats well done,
but it may not be good for
you. Consumption of well-
done and very well-done
meats can form carcino-
gens which don't form
when meat is baked or
stewed.
Researchers have found
that people who preferred
well-done steak were
almost 60 percent more
likely to die of pancreatic
cancer than those who ate
steak less well done or don't
eat steak.
Researchers suggest that
meat be cooked at a safe
temperature, but not an
unnecessarily high temper-
ature, and that charred
pieces be cut away.
Shelley Koppel is unable
to endorse specific treat-
ments for disease. Any
protocols for treatment or
testing she discusses are
accepted standards of
medical practice as recom-
mended by agencies such as
the American Academy of
Pediatrics or the American
Cancer Society. When she
draws from personal
experience, those are her
experiences and not
medical recommendations.
She is the former editor of
"Today's HealthCare"
magazine and a member of

Clearing up questions about the task bar
he task bar can be an
area of confusion for
many new computer
users.
On most Windows
machines it's at the bottom
of the screen, with the start
button as the very first
object on the left side of
the bar and the clock the
last object at the far right.
(That is, if your task bar is
docked to the bottom of
the screen. You see, the
task bar can be moved to
the top, left side, right side
or its "default position," the
bottom of the screen.)
But what about all those
other icons and buttons on
the bar, what do those do?
Let's take a look at the
things that make up the
task bar, why it's important
to pay attention to it and
how to customize your task
bar to better suit your
needs.
The first item on the task
bar is the start button.
Ironically, this is also where
you go to shut down. Click
the start button and you
will be able to access the
programs installed on your
computer and other things,
such as the printers and
the system control panel.
The all programs section
of the start menu is where
you go to launch programs
that you don't have a
shortcut for on your
desktop or the quick
launch area of the task bar.
COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
As the name implies, the
start button is the place to
go to start most things on
your machine.
Next in line, just to the
right of the start button,
you may find the afore-
mentioned "quick launch"
area. Here you will find
more shortcuts, usually to
commonly used applica-
tions such as Internet
Explorer and Outlook
Express. You may even see
an icon called "show
desktop" (if you hold your
mouse over an icon
without clicking and wait a
bit, you'll see its name).
This is a great icon to click
when you have one or
more windows open and
taking up the whole screen.
Clicking it minimizes
everything, so you can get
back to the desktop.
Now what if you don't
have a quick launch area in
your task bar? If you click
an empty area of the
taskbar with the right
mouse button, a pop-up
menu will open. Hold your
mouse over tool bars, and a
list of available toolbars
will appear. Click the quick
launch toolbar, and a
check mark should appear
before it. Then, click
anywhere outside of the
little menu. It will close
and you should now see
the quick launch area of
the task bar.
Shortcuts here can be
easily added or removed by
right-clicking the icon you
want to remove and
clicking delete, or dragging
a shortcut that you would
like there and dropping it
in place. Again, the quick
launch area is a great place
to house your most
frequently used icons.
Next to the quick launch
area is a long section of
task bar that will be empty
unless a program or
application is running.
When you launch a
program such as Internet
Explorer, Word or Outlook
Express, a button will
appear on the task bar
representing the program
that is running.
This is important to keep
an eye on, as today's
machines let you launch
multiple programs and
open multiple windows
(this is called multi-
tasking).
Keeping an eye on what
buttons appear in your
task bar helps you manage
what applications are
running, lets you jump
back and forth from one
open window to another,
and close unwanted
windows by "right-click-
ing" the button and
selecting close.
It's not uncommon to
have many buttons
representing active win-
dows on your system, but a
good rule of thumb is to
close any windows you are
not accessing. That will
free up more of the com-
puter's brainpower.
The next area on the task
bar to the right of any
application buttons that
might be running you
will notice a number of
icons surrounded by a fine
rectangle. The icons in this
area (known as the system
tray) are different from the
icons in the quick launch
area. These icons represent
programs that are running
in the background and
using computer brainpow-
er.
In an optimized
machine, you'll usually
only find a few items in the
system tray: the clock,
volume control and an
icon representing your
anti-virus program.
Unfortunately, most
machines are plagued with
items in the system tray
eating up computer
horsepower and they can
use a good weeding out.

A family of three
evaded what could

not fatal, mishap after a

loops flew too low and
collided with their car.
Police in the town of
Grossostheim, Ger-

when it flew too low

A German who tried
to fix his leaky air

apartment instead, the
fire brigade in the
western city of Duessel-

old man used tire
repair solvent to plug a
hole in his airbed and
left it overnight. But it

day.
"A spark from the

HUIIRRIANE SEASON 2009
By Joe Zelenak
Hi everybody. We are now almost two months into the 2009
hurricane season. There are 11 named storms forecast to form in the
tropics. In all, 5 of these storms are forecast to become hurricanes. At
least 2 of these storms are forecast to be major systems of category 3
or higher. This forecast is based on the arrival of El Nino and the lower
then normal water temperatures of the tropical Atlantic.
It is important to note that it only takes one bad storm to make it
a bad season. In 1992, the entire season was had very little tropical
activity. On August 14, 1992 a tropical wave moved off the coast of
Africa. On August 17th Tropical Storm Andrew was born. The system
began to rapidly intensify and became a hurricane on August 22.
As the system progressed west rapid intensification took place. The
storm reached cat 5 status and slammed into south Florida August
24th. Andrew became one of the worst hurricane disasters in history
turning a relatively quiet season into one of the worst seasons ever in
the blink of an eye.
BE PREPARED this 2009 hurricane season. Even if a season is
predicted to be quiet, it is important not to become complacent. Storms
can develop and hit our area in a very short period of time. Please do
all your preparations now and make sure you have all your supplies,
shutters ready and trees trimmed before any storms threaten.

New Smyrna Beach: lots to do and see, in add
great beaches
By Jamye Durrance

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -
While the allure of white
sandy beaches is definitely
the main attraction in New
Smyrna Beach, the city isn't
just a carefree beach town.
There's plenty to do in this
quaint city and you can
do it all without digging
deep into your wallet.
"(The beach) is not all we
have," said Deborah Boyd,
executive director of the
New Smyrna Beach Visitor's
Bureau. "There are so many
cool things to do. Most peo-
ple tell us they didn't know
this was here. It's wonderful.
They say they are surprised
because it is so much Old
Florida."
New Smyrna Beach, locat-
ed just 15 miles south of
Daytona Beach, is one of the
oldest cities in the state: it
was first settled in 1768.
You can take a stroll
through the city's rich his-
torical heritage with a visit to
the Southeast Volusia His-
torical Museum, located on
Sams Avenue downtown,
where admission is free.
Across the street from the
museum is Old Fort Park,
home of the Turnbull Ruins,
which are believed to be the
foundation of a personal
home owned by Andrew
Turnbull, the city's founder.
Another historical site
worth checking out is the
Sugar Mill Ruins, located
just off State Road 44 on the
western end of the city.
The sugar mill was built
during the early 1800s but
was destroyed during the
war between the Seminole

"My wife, Heather, was an amazing woman and the center of our family. When she was
diagnosed with terminal cancer, we didn't know what to do.
"We didn't want to give up hope, so I called Treasure Coast Hospice right away. They got her
pain under control, and offered the services that enabled her to have a fulfilling life in the
final months. In fact, her quality of life was phenomenal.
"Treasure Coast helped me and our children, too. There's no way I could have gotten
through those times without them."

SHELLEY KOPPEL
Famed composer
in Stuart for
premiere
A theatrical dream team
came to the Lyric Theatre
on July 16 for the dress
rehearsal of the musical
"Geppetto and Son," a re-
telling of the Pinocchio
tale from the point of view
of his father, Geppetto.
Stephen Schwartz, the
composer, David Stern, the
book's author, and Freddie
Gershon, head of Music
Theatre International, the
world-wide theatrical
licensing agency, were here
for StarStruck Performing
Arts Center's world pre-
mier of the student edition
of the play.
The three men sat down
before the rehearsal to talk
about the project.
Mr. Schwartz, who wrote
the Broadway hits "Pippin"
and "Wicked" and the
movies "Pocahontas" and
"Prince of Egypt," has
always been fascinated by
folklore and tales.
"I just think they're good
stories," he said. "There's a
reason they're in our
collective consciousness. I
always liked taking a
familiar event and spin-
ning it. The audience
brings knowledge and
expectations and has them
undermined and illumi-
nated. It heightens the
story."
Mr. Stern came to Mr.
Schwartz with the idea of
doing something about a
father.
"It was David's clever
notion that we all have
illusions about what it
takes to be a parent and
then we find out what it
takes," he said.
"When Pinocchio runs
away, we stay with the dad.
During the course of the
show, we come to a much
greater understanding of
what being a dad is."
Mr. Stern's interest in the
role of the father stems
from his own experience.
"I had a complicated
relationship with my
father. He died when I was
in my 20s. I wondered
what the responsibilities of
a father were. My dad was
a workaholic and I said,
'that can't be it.' As we
reversed the Pinocchio
story, we opened up the
exploration. There are so
many issues."

John Wilkes, executive
director of the Sunrise, is
pleased the theater contin-
ues to offer a wide variety of
entertainment to a growing
audience.
"What excites me most is
to see the increase in atten-
dance and sales over the
last two years," he said. "It
has to do with program-
ming, but also that so many
new people are discovering
historic downtown Fort
Pierce.
'"At a time when many
theaters have declining
sales, we have people from
Miami and West Palm
Beach," he said.
Tickets for the new sea-
son will be available to
members from July 27-Aug.
30. Sales to the general pub-
lic will begin on Aug. 31.
Memberships begin at $50.
Mr. Wilkes took members
of the media on a tour of the
black box theater under
construction in the space
adjacent to the Sunrise. It
will accommodate approxi-
mately 200 people and
should be available for
rental to the community by
the beginning of November.
"We already have some
rental shows booked in the
space for November and
December," Mr. Wilkes said.
"It seems the community is
interested in this space for a
number of activities. It
should be an enhancement
to the theater and to down-
town."

Explore economical, roomier vacation option
There is a growing
trend when it comes
to travel accommo-
dations. No longer are large
or even small families
subjected to small single-
room hotels or finding a
place with adjoining rooms
so the entire family can
"stay" together.
Now families and even
more importantly, groups
of golfers, can stay in lavish
two, three or even four-
bedroom condos complete
with full kitchens, several
baths and large spacious
living rooms. Best of all,
this can be all yours for
about the same price as a
hotel room.
A couple of weeks ago,
we took our annual sum-
mer family vacation to
Orlando. There was no way
my family was going to
enjoy a week there if it
meant living out of a small
hotel room and eating out
for every meal.
Couple that with the
need to save as much
money as possible during
these tougher times, and I
was on the hunt.
What I discovered after
putting on my Indiana
Jones hat was Sky Resorts,
proprietors of five proper-
ties in the Orlando/Kissim-
mee area. Each property
has its own unique portfo-
lio designed to meet the
needs of families, groups
and extended-stay visitors.
Based on your needs, Sky
has resorts close to all of

the theme parks as well as
the convention center. Our
choice was Sky Resorts'
Lake BuenaVista Resort
Village & Spa.
Here we had a huge
three-bedroom condo,
complete with full kitchen,
balcony, Jacuzzi tub,
washer and dryer and a 42-
inch HD TV. I could just
imagine myself in the same
place with my golf buddies,
playing cards, making a hot
breakfast every morning or
being able to have my own
room, where I could relax
in peace and quiet while
everyone else enjoyed their
day. It was like being at
home without the yard
work.
While I didn't have my
entire golf gang with me,
my son plays. For us, the
location was close to
several wonderful courses
and afforded those in my
family who don't golf all
kinds of choices.
For the non-golfer there
is an outlet mall right next
door. There is also a
fantastic spa on site, where
one can have all the
tension of a day on vaca-
tion wiped away. If you'd

My favorite amenity,
along with that of my kids
and some friends that
came by to visit, had to be
the Pirate Plunge main
pool.
Here, our kids enjoyed
the cool, refreshing water
and the slide that runs
through a pirate ship, while
I melted away the soreness
of a long day in the hot tub
before retiring to a ham-
mock for a nap. For those
looking for more peace and
quiet while at the pool,
there is another pool and
hot tub area without the
craziness.
One thing about being
on vacation with family or
a golf vacation with your
buddies is you want to
spend time doing more
than golf. The social
aspects of a vacation are
just as important as the
theme parks or the golf
course.
With a true "home" for
the time you're here, you
get to make meals, watch
television, play games and
more without being
cramped in a small single
room.
