PORT ST. LUCIE At
night, lights shine through
the darkness outside the
Disabled American Veter-
an's post in Port St. Lucie.
For several years, that
hadn't been the case, as
fires and then the hurri-
canes, in 2004 damaged
the light poles and fix-
tures.
Gregory Fox, who
attends Boy Scout troop
meetings at the post, said
he noticed the darkness.

When it came time to do
a community service proj-
ect to become an Eagle
Scout, Mr. Fox said he
decided he wanted to give
back to the post that spon-
sored Troop 445.
He said couldn't think of
a "better way to give back
to the community than to
help the Disabled Ameri-
can Veterans."
Mr. Fox, who is a home-
schooled student, said he
decided to replace the
three light poles.

But that, just led persistent

For his efforts in helping to

was named Investigator of the Year for
2008.
He and officers from several other agen-

The purpose was to

Mr. Moses commented
after public health officials

However, since the warn-

occurred on the Treasure

The concern about 'a pan-

$16,000 and $20,000, he

Ron Knepshield, a mem-o
ber of the post, said he was
somewhat- incredulous that
Mr. Fox would get the proj-
ect done. .
But it turned out, Mr. Fox
"is 'a very enterprising
young man in terms of
coordinating" a project, he
said.
If it wasn't for Mr. Fox, he
said, the parking lots and
outside area would have
remained dark..
"Quite honestly, we didn't
have the money for the
project," Mr. Knepshield
said.
Mr. Fox said to raise the

money he decided to go a:
different route than pan-
'cake breakfasts and car'
washes, the fundraisers typ-
ically used by Scouts for
such projects.
Instead, he said, he
reached out to different
businesses and organiza-
tions, asking them to
donate money and services.
When he began working
on the project 'some two
years ago, he said, he found
a lot of people wanted to
help.
Some donated .money.
Others, such as an electrical
company, donated parts.
Another firm, Electric Sig-
nal Technology,' based in
Fort Lauderdale, offered to
do the installation work of
the light poles and concrete
bases, he said.
Mr Fox said that although
a litde movie than a sear ago

he had everything in place,
he ran into several permit-
ting issues with the city.
He met with Port St. Lucie
Mayor Patricia Christensen
and she assisted him in get-
ting the issuesresolved.
The only other roadblock
came about when Electric
Signal Technology got a
contract to do a large proj-
ect on Interstate',95 involv-
ing lighting.
The veteran's post project
was delayedd until the+ com-
pany 'could spare the work-*
ers.
Following that, he and
other Scouts planted small
gardens around' the light
poles, he said. He had
obtained donations of the
plants.
Mr. Knepshield said post
members could not be more
pleased with the results. .
-"It has enhanced .ur

building a great deal," he
said.
The project benefits* a
number of organizations.

.Legion, the Jewish War. Vet-

geants organization, he
said.
Women involved in activi-
ties at the post were warN of
leaving at night because of
the darkness, he said. -
"With the lighting, a lot of
them feel more comfortable
coming and going," he said.
Mr. Fox said he hopes'the,
project will help the post
increase its revenue by
making the building more

SYNTHETIC
GEMSTONES
There is nothing against the
law in producing imitation or
synthetic gemstones, as long
as no one is harmed or
defrauded by it,. These prod-
uCts are iindeed a'n important,
element of the gemstone trade.
Those who do not want the
security risk of or cannot afford,
genuine gemstones can use
these for their adornment. But
when imitations o'r synthetics
are passed, off as more valu-
able true gemstones at inflated
prices, then that is fraud.
Imitations and synthetics must
always be designated as such;'
they have to be named correct-
ly. A distinction is also made
between imitations, which only',
-look-similar to the gems, and
synthetics, which are artificial
versions of natural gemstones.
An imitation is made to resem-
ble natural or synthetic gem
materials, completely or par-
tially manmade. They imitate
the rook, color, and effect of the
original substance, but they
possess neither their chemical
nor their physical characteris-
tics. Synthetic gemstones are
crystallized manmade products
whose physical and chemical
properties are for the most part
correspond to. those 9f their
natural gemstone counter-
parts. This term,is also used by'
the gemstone trade for: those
synthetic stones which do not
have a counterpart in nature.
In fact, these stones are prop-
erly ttermed' imitations. If there
are pieces in your jewelry col-
lection that you have questions
about please bring them in and

cuss these items with you a,

Another factor is communi-
cations, Mr. Moses said.
In 1918, when one of the
deadly pandemics occurred,
such communication tools,
such as e-mail, weren't
around to help instantly
spread the word.
"We're in a situation now
where we can be more; active,
reactive and proactive," Mr.
Moses said.
One positive aspect of the
current situation, he said, is
that public health officials can
use it to practice and improve
their responses to flu out-
breaks.
Two of the most important
things people can do to. pre-
vent the spread of the flu is to
frequently wash their hands
and to sneeze into their
elbows rather than their
hands, Ms. Peck said.
"Most people do not do
them," she said.
But those means are effec-
tive, she said.
"That's science talking," Ms.
Peck added.

to see which one would go
faster.
Those who want to grow
sweet potatoes may get
some helpful information
from an experiment con'c
ducted by Noah Guntow, 7,
of Mariposa Elementary
School.
He wanted to see if sweet
potatoes would grow better
in the light or the dark.
As it turned out, sweet
potatoes grow better in the
dark.
That's because "sweet
potatoes grow under-
ground" he said.
Another student found
out that if you eat burgers,
with~,more fat, there's also,
likely to be more grease, she
said.
Alexis Fleming, 11, a stu-
dent at Parkway Elementary,
said a test of burgers from:
fast food restaurants found
that those with more fat had
more grease.
The "winner" was the
Sonic burger, she said.
Sierra Deblasio, 11, a stu-
dent at Parkway Elementary
School, tested whether
orange, grape or lemon juice
would be most effective
cleaning a penny." ,
"We thought lemon juice
would make the penny
cleaner," she said, adding
the students believe it has
more acid.
But orange juice was most
effective, she said.
Perhaps the most complex
experiment was conducted
by Nathan Phillips, a fifth
grader at Oak Hammock K-8
School. He determined that
water will power a car if its
molecules are split, said
Flavia Reyeg, a fifth-grade
teacher at Oak Hammock.
She said his experiment
particularly impressed her.
Given a chance to partici-
pate, 'the students were
eager to become scientists,
said Cheri Maxon, a fifth-
grade teacher at Parkway
Elementary.
"I'm really proud of them,"
she said. "They push me.
They're hungry for the infor-
mation."

Callers are asked to refrain from making slanderous
statements. Statements of fact will be checked for
accuracy.

Grocery cart consideration

I just would like to say there are a lot of angry people out
there.
I grocery shop atWal Mart. I try and go early to get a close
parking space. I can't tell you how many times I came across
a space that someone left a shopping cart in it. You either
get out of the car, or find another space. Why would a per-
son do that? Are they that angry or just plain mean? A little
consideration for the next shopper would be nice.

Re: picture's on IDs

In regards to a rant about issuing. new cards for food
stamps with picture IDs on them; it's time for the state of
Florida to get with the program.
I am originally from NewYork, where it's a requirement to
have your photo on your Medicaid card to get any type of
assistance. I had to prove who I was and the type of assis-
tance needed. It surely does cut down on fraud.
I chuckle every time I see how Florida does business. It's
amazing this state has lasted this long. Things are so back-
wards down here it's unreal.
Maybe the lawmakers, police, etc. down here should take
a trip up to the Empire State and see how things are run. I
see sheriffs, police cars all running around, yet there seems
to be more violence here in Florida than in Mew York. Why
is that?

Enforce the laws

The lawmakers pass another law allowing the police to
pull you over and issue a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.
Long ago, they made a law for "impeding traffic," which
they don't enforcer so then they had to create another law to
stop the problem for impeding traffic that is now for road
rage or aggressive driving.
| If they enforced the first law. there would not much call
for the hew lavw.cotsidering that if you didn't impede traffic
'4we wwuld be very little road rage.. '"
Then they created the law that kids 16 and under must
wear a bike helmet. I live half a block from a middle school,
where every kid should be 16 or under, and on any given
day if 100 kids ride by on a bike, maybe five have a helmet.
There's a 15 mph speed limit the school buses don't fol-
low, but I never see them pulled over.
Maybe the lawmakers should make a law that only allows
five donuts per day, so the cops can enforce all the other
laws.
Maybe these lawmakers are just trying to justify your tax
dollar being spent on all these un-enforced laws.

Not all Republicans are racists

Will not go into your rant about the Republicans, whom
you think are all racists, or-Rush Limbaugh or Sarah Palin or
Newt Gingrich, as your letter shows that you yourself are
probably a white racist.
Calling people names because you do not agree with
them is so childless. These are all good people who care,
that their country is going to hell in a hand basket.
For your information, I would have welcomed a black or
white president, as long as he had common sense. It is very
strange that when anyone contradicts your opinions they
are called "ricists."

More on Obama -.

What do you mean Obama "will show up for work?" You
voted for someone who is hardly in the White House.
He is constantly traveling about the country, being pho-
tographed in Hawaii, and out of Washington, still, cam-
paigning in many states, on a date with his wife, eating
hamburgers at a hamburger joint.
This news is so heartwarming, isn't it?
Regarding his expressing himself in an articulate manner,
have you ever heard him without his teleprompter? It's one
uh" after another. I can't even watch him talk anyrtore. '
It is asinine to say that anyone wants President Obama to
fail. He is doing that on his own.

Keeping your keyboard clean

T hey say the average
computer keyboard is
a hotbed of bacteria,
more unsanitary than even
the nastiest of public
restrooms.
Now, I don't know who
"they" are, but taking a look
at my keyboard, Ican only
guess what kinds of germs
have decided to take up
.residence there.
Think about it for a
minute; we spend all day
long, every day, sitting in
front of these things with
fingers all over it, day in
and day out. Food, crumbs,
coffee drips,'etc., accumu-
late between the keys on a
daily basis.
I have no problemri
believing "them" when they
say that the typical com -
puter keyboard is loaded
with germs and bacteria
even if I don't know who
"they" are.
So what do we do about
it? How does one keep the
keyboard clean without a
lot of hassle?
Basic cleaning is easo. I
use a mild detergent and a
soft lint-free cloth for a
basic wipe down and a can
of compressed air to blow
'out anything stuck between
Sthe keys. ,
To actually disinfect the
ke\ board, I use those
disinfecting wipes that you
can find in most supermar-
kets or drugstores.
I do all ot my cleaning

COMPUTE

SEAN MCCARTHY

with the computer turned
off because you can't wipe
the keyboard down (espe-
cially if you are giving it a
thorough cleaning) without
pressing the keys; and you
don't want to be sending
the computer a bunch of
random commands while
you're cleaning it. Who
knows what you'll end up.
telling ybur computer to
do?
i; There aie a lot of tips
online regarding keeping
your keyboard clean and
germ free,-but there is one
suggestion that you may
find I would strongly
caution against and that's
tossing your keyboard into
the dishwasher.
Yes, there are people out
, there who have done this
with no problem, but
(unless you have a spare
and don't mind destroying
the keyboard you are trying'
to clean) I wouldn't recom-
' mendit,
I kpow, because I tried it
andit didn't work i isn't drat
a surprise?).
At 4 glance, the idea
sounds crazy, but there are
enough stories out there
from people who do just

that on a regular basis;
enough for me to actually
give it a try.
You see I have (or had)
this old keyboard that I
used constantly. Between
all the keys was gunk and
gook that a surface wipe
across the top of the keys
never touched.
SI wanted the keyboard
clean, but didn't want to
have to get in there and
scrub in between all the
keys, so (after reading
many examples of people
doing this successfully on
the Internet), I unplugged
the thing and loaded it up
with a load of dishes.
Iran itthrotigh a normal
c\cle and boy, did that `
keyboard ever look clean!
Knowing that I had just
doused the thing with tons
of water, I left it unplugged
and in front of a fan for a
week and then, the
moment of truth!.
When I was absolutely
sure the keyboard',was dry, I
plugged it back into the
computer and turned it on.
' No response excepia

about 10 to 15 old, spare
keyboards lying around
and I tried this in the
interest of science.
If it worked, I would be
typing now on a squeaky
clean keyboard, but since it'
didn't work, no problem, I
just reconnected the spare
that I used while the

keyboard was drying and
went on with my life.
i For really dirty key-

to consider replacing them
with new ones.
Basic keyboards today

to w'ti't.sealshield.com and
you can get one that's
advertised as "dishwasher

In fact, they advertise
keyboards and mice that
are dishwasher safe, so, if
you are determined to have
the cleanest keyboard

way to go.

leave the dishwasher for

Having a pet can help your health

oo is helping me heal.
Two weeks ago, I had
to make the wrench-
ing decision to have my cat
euthanized.
Fie was diagnosed wi th
lung cancer shordy after Roy
died last fall and had been
steadily declining. His death
brought m.y grief right back
upo the fore and I just felt
that I needed some new.life.
Although it's not necessar-
ily recommended that you
get a new pet immediately,
my vet had an abandoned
young cat that needed a
home. I named him Boo,
after one of Roy's favorite
expressions. When things
were going well he'd say
they were "tickety-boo."
Boo must have had a hard
life, because he doesn't give
his trust easily I have spent
time talking to him as he'
hides, letting him hear the
sound of my voice, waiting
patiently for him to know
that I will take care of him.
While I took him home to
help me, helping him has
made me feel better. I am
not alone.
A study by the American
Pet Products Manufacturers
Association revealed that 62
percent ofAmerican
households have pets and
research has suggested for

many years that owning a
pet has both physical and
psychological benefits.
For kids, pets can help
teach a sense of responsibil-
ity, empathy, loyalty and
caring for something other
than themselves; A dog can
provide exercise and help
kids control their weight.
Recent studies have even
shown that kids who grow
up in households with furry
pets, such as dogs or cats, or
on farms, where they are
exposed to large animals,
have a lower risk of allergies
and asthma.
Studies have shown kids
with a pet at home have
stronger immune systems
and are less likely to miss ,
school. Early exposure to
animals exposed them to
more infections, and the
exposure boosted their
immune systems, giving
them as much as nine extra
days in school a year.
If pets are good exercise
,buddies for kids, the same
thing holds true for grown-
ups. A brisk walk with a dog

is great exercise and many.
people have found walking a
dog is a great conversation
starter. ,
A fewyearsago, we took in'
a dachshundpuppy we '
found in the street. Wh ile we
searched for its owner or a
good home, I took him outi
for walks several inmes a day.
Someone always stopped to
talk to me or pet him. We
found him a home with
other dachshund puppies,
but I remember how
friendly everyone was to
him and to me.
Pets have long served as
companion animals,
traveling to hospitals and
nursing homes to visit with
patients. There are benefits
to the elderly, patients at -
home and caregivers as well.
Lynette Hart, an associate
professor at the University of
California at Davis School of
Veterinary Medicine reports,
on WebMD, that studies
have shown pets have a .
calming effect on
Alzheimer's patients and
cats, which are less work
than dogs, ease the burden
of isolation and stress for
caregivers. Bringing pets to
hospital and nursing homes
is established practice.
Other studies point to-
lower rates of depression in

patients with AIDS and
lower blood pressure in
stressful situations for
people with strong attach-
ment to pets.
Researchers even say that
heart attack patients with
pets may have better
survival rates than those
who do not.
The Humane Society,
which offers many tips on
finding the right pet for
your family, says that "pets
aren't just good friends,
they are good medicine."
Don't be surprised if your
doctor says, "get a cat and
call me in the morning!"
Boo is becoming more
trusting, and I told my grief
counselor that "he would
come around in his own
time, at his own pace."
She asked me to repeat
the words and I realized i
that I could be speaking of
. myself. as ,ell. Boo and I
were brought together for a
reason.

Friends, counselors, parents

for places that hire teens.
Know your business. If you
want to work for a specific
employer or are offered an
interview, find out as much
possible about that business.
Your knowledge is sure to

Learn how to complete an

for an application. This is very
important, as you may have to

Imagine Schools will oper-
ate Nau. Renaissance has the
capacity for 1,290 students in
grades kindergarten through
eight.
. Already, 1,600 parents have"
submitted -applications, said
Richard Page, vice president.
of operations for Charter
Schools USA, based in Fort
Lauderdale.
"We could be full on day
one,' he said.
The o0ily caveat to that, he
said, is that the school won't
start the eighth grade until the
2010-11 schoolyear..
Charter schools are public
schools generally operated
and built by.private compa-
nies. Students pay no tuition
to attend.
Mr. Page said the school
teaches the same basic class-

es, such as reading and math-
ematics, but has a somewhat
different program than public
schools. .
All students at Renaissance
will be required to wear uni-
forms, he said.
Teachers monitor where
each student is in their educa-
tion and develop individual
plans for each pupil, he said.
Mr. Page said the school will
offer sports and arts and
music programs.
That's one reason why Carla
Reuic of Port St.. Lucie
enrolled her two children, she
said..
She said she also believes
Renaissance is a school "dedi-
cated to the kids."
Jonathan Hage, chief exec-
utive officer of Charter
Schools USA, said Renais-
sance will be focused on the
students,
"All the decisions made in
the school, I can promise you
as chief executive officer, will
be focused on kids," Mr. Hage
said.
Besides providing academ-

ics, he said, the school will
offer. character education,
which will help students to
become good citizens.
Mr. Hage said charter
schools provide an alternative
to private and public schools.
Port St. Lucie Mayor Patri-
cia Christensen said she's
happy parents are getting that
choice.
"Our children deserve the
best education with real
choices," she said.
That option, she said, of
should motivate all schools to
improve.
Mr. Hage said when Charter
Schools USA looked at open-
ing a school in Port St. Lucie,
there was a groundswell of
interest from parents.
Although no definite plans
exist, Charter Schools USA
may one day also open a char-
ter high school in Port St.
Lucie, Mr. Page said.
Parents may file enrollment
applications for Renaissance
by going to www.stluciechar-
ter.org or calling (866) 543-

Tips
From page A7
why you would be best for
the position. This shows the
employer you are serious
about wanting the job and,
can help you stand out from
all the other teens applying
for the job.
Be a good employee. Once
you're hired, always arrive
on time and show up every-
day, listen to instructions
and be a'positive team play-
er. Employers want some-
one who is dependable and
willing to work hard. Often-
times, one summer job can
lead to next year's summer

job. It can also provide you a
positive reference for future
job or school endeavors.
Grades count. Get the
best grades possible. Some-
times employers have to
choose between a few can-
didates who seem all the
same. Getting good grades
can help you standout as the
"one."
Volunteer. Although it's
tough to get experience on
your resume, you can par-
ticipate in community
activities and/or volunteer
to improve your resume.
These 'activities will make
you shine in the .eyes of
someone looking for
employees.

Get assistance with your

everyone you know, Work-
force Solutions offers free
assistance with writing

view skills and looking for

State College will pres-
ent a variety concert,
. "Hot. Summer Nights,"
on May 28-30.
The event is part of'
the summer season and
will include the compa--

band.
Dale Rieth, director of
vocal music at IRSC,
spoke recently about,
the last concerts for this
season and about the
upcoming season.
"Hot Summer:Nights"
is a variety concert and
we're endeavoring to hit
a variety of eras," he
said. "We'll have pop
music, jazz and old
standards. We have a,
group of four singing
ladies and four singing

men and each will pres-
enht selections."
. The eclectic program
includes "Ain't. Misbe-,
havin'" by Fats Waller,
Hank Williams' "Your.
Cheatin' Heart," a selec-
tion from the group II
Divo in Italian, "Little
Deuce Coupe," by the
Beach Boys, a medley of
'songs fro.ri the 1960s,
and the disco hit "It's
Raining Men." The
finale is a 'medley of
Motown hits.
"I think our title, 'Hot
Summer Nights,', is
'appropriate for 'th'e
'weather and because
the tunes are kind of
spicy, Mr. Rieth said. '
"The Moto\vn will get
people up,and out of
their seats."
