Taylor co-sponsors House Bill 99 to repeal fee increase
For Hometown News
Volnews@hometownnewsol.com
State Representative
Dwayne L. Taylor (D-Day-
tona) announced that he
has co-sponsored a bill to
repeal fee increases
approved during the 2009
legislative session.
House Bill 99, which Rep-
resentative Taylor has co-
sponsored for the 2010 ses-
sion, reverts vehicle
registration, title fees and
driver's license costs back to
what they were before high-
er fees took effect Septem-
ber 1.
"I voted against these fee
hikes because they are a tax
on all state drivers, working
class families, the elderly
and disabled on fixed
incomes," said Representa-
tive Taylor. "These fee hikes
are the wrong way to raise
revenue during a recession."
The fee increases for
renewing vehicle registra-
tion varies by the weight of
the vehicle, and in some
cases the costs have
increased as much as 66
percent. The initial registra-
tion fee for a vehicle has
gone up 125 percent, jump-
ing from $100 to $225.
Simultaneously, the cost of
renewing a driver license
has doubled to $48.
"Florida House Democ-
rats like me voted unani-
mously against these fee
hikes even as Republicans
argued that driving is a priv-
ilege, not a right. Try telling
that to somebody who has
to get to work to feed their
family," Mr. Taylor said.
He signed onto House Bill
99 this week in order to
repeal the new vehicle fee
hikes in favor of a more
modest series of cost hikes.
His co-sponsorship of the
legislation is a continuation
of his efforts to alert Floridi-
ans statewide about the tag
fee increases. In recent
weeks, he has received
numerous calls from con-
stituents throughout Flori-
da who were unable to
renew their tags or licenses
within the short timeframe
before the higher fees took
effect.
"I am proud to co-spon-
sor this sensible consumer
legislation and I urge all my
colleagues Democrats
and Republicans in the
Florida Legislature to join
me in backing House Bill
99," said Representative
Taylor. "This is an opportu-
nity for government to do
right by the people of the
state of Florida."
For a full listing of the fee
increases that would be
repealed under House Bill
99, please follow the

DAYTONA BEACH Fred
Ooellette, 85, has been dancing
since 1945, and he's still kicking
up his heels.
The Ormond Beach resident
enjoyed ballroom dancing in
the 1940s and 1950s but then
had to sit out for a few decades
when it fell out of style.
That was then.
With the help of popular TV
shows like "Dancing With the
Stars" and "So You Think You
Can Dance," ballroom dancing
is back in a big way and a local
group is helping people like Mr.
Ooellette get back on the dance
floor.

Sea turtle nesting lower than average
For Hometown News
Volnews@hometownnewsol.com
The latest reports from
Volusia County Environ-
mental Management show
338 sea turtle nests on
Volusia County beaches so
far this nesting season,
which began May 1.
Of these, six are
leatherback sea turtles,
eight are green sea turtles
and 324 are loggerheads.
Loggerheads historically
are the most common tur-
tles to nest on Volusia
County's beaches.
This year's nesting
appears to be lower than
the historical average of
450 nests per year,
although it may increase
slightly with nesting
expected through Septem-
ber, according to Jennifer
Winters, Volusia County's
sea turtle Habitat Conser-
vation Plan program man-
ager.
"In 2008, we had a record
high number of sea turtle
nests with a final count of
649 total nests," she said.
"To date, more than 17,800
sea turtles have hatched
and made their way to the
ocean, with another 11,000
expected to hatch before
the turtle season officially
ends Oct. 31."
According to Winters,
the relatively mild hurri-
cane season has had mini-
mal effects on the nesting
season; only two nests
were washed away by ero-
sion. "With nearly two
months left of hurricane
season and more than 100
nests on the beach, we
hope the beach will remain
stable," she said.
Residents and visitors to
Volusia County's beaches
should continue to
observe lighting restric-
tions to ensure sea turtle
hatchlings safely
reach the water. Restric-
tions include shielding
exterior lights and closing
blinds or curtains to
reduce the amount of light
reaching the beach. This
artificial light disorients
baby sea turtles and
reduces their chance of
survival. Further, beach
walkers should cover their
flashlights with red film or
use a red LED light to be
less disruptive to hatch-
lings trying to reach the
water's edge.

turtles program, call (386)

year's Family Days starts Thursday Oct. 1 thru Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 at City Center Circle, Port Orange.
Family Days festival brings community together
By Jamye Durrance
Durrance@hometownnewsol.com
PORT ORANGE From a
battle of the bands to carni-
val rides and funnel cakes,
there is a little something
for everyone at next week's
Port Orange Family Days.
The event will take place
Thursday, Oct. 1 through
Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Port
Orange City Center.
Family Days will kick off
with local teen bands bat-
tling on stage. Meanwhile,
across the lake a perennial
family favorite, the carni-
val, will get underway.
On Saturday, the Family
Days parade will be led by
its Grand Marshall: Sonny
Shroyer, the actor who
played Enos on the hit TV
show "The Dukes of Haz-
zard."
Mr. Shroyer will lead the
parade and sign auto-
graphs for fans afterwards.
Port Orange Family Days
began more than a decade
ago as a small block party,
but has since grown into a
four-day event with enter-
tainment, a carnival, food,
and a vendor expo.
Admission and the enter-
tainment are free but carni-
val rides and food cost
money.
"We try to keep it a fami-
ly-friendly, low-cost event,"
said Jill Geddy, a board
member with the Port
Orange Family Days Trust,
which puts on the event.
Last year, organizers said
attendance topped 70,000.
This year's vendor expo,
which features hundred of
local businesses and non-
profit organizations, is sold
out, Ms. Geddy said.
"There are lots of local
businesses and organiza-
tions coming out," she said.
"A lot of fun stuff."
The money raised from
the event goes to local
charities, Ms. Geddy said.
"Any program we can
help in the local communi-
ty, we do that," she said.
"We, fortunately, can give
back a lot."
Unfortunately, the Fami-
ly Days event was rocked by
scandal last year when two
board members were
investigated for skimming
money from the organiza-
tion's deposits.
Board member Pete
Atwood was arrested,
pleaded no contest to
grand theft. He eventually
agreed to repay $10,500 to
the organization.
Fellow board member Al
Bell was not arrested but
also repaid that same
amount.
Mr. Bell was credited
with starting the Family
Days event.
Ms. Geddy said that is all
in the past now.
"Things are terrific,
we've gotten past that,"
she said. "It's been taken
care of through the legal
system. There were no
monies lost, everything
was repaid. We're going on
stronger than ever into the
future."

It was puzzling when the Ormond Beach city budget for
the new fiscal year called for the full-time position of mail
clerk-courier to be reduced to three days.
Then, we learned of the city commission decision to
donate $8,000 to the Daytona Beach International Festival.
Now, it all makes perfect cents.
Does FPL get it?
Like so many others who have written into the rants and
raves about the increases that FPL keeps trying to get done,
I have a question.
If the people of Florida, who are fed up with all the rate
hikes and the extreme power and water bills made their
homes completely solar, installed wind power on their
property and got themselves completely self sufficient so
that FPL was no longer needed, do you think that they
would get the message?
I used to live in LasVegas, which as all know is a desert.
Our monthly water bill was less than $20 a month. Our
power bill was always less than $100 per month, so I really
do wonder why the prices of these two items are so much
higher here?
My suggestions to FPL is all the big shots take pay cuts
and cut their costs that way.
In response to
'Enough is enough'
I agree, enough is enough. A lot of people are laid off
from their jobs and they can't afford to pay more. Some
can't even pay their mortgage and other bills.
Why did politicians agree to increase the registration tag
fee, especially in this bad economic time?
They probably don't care about the people. As long as
they have big paying jobs, everything is fine to them. When
it's time for an election, they want people to vote for them.
After they get elected, they forget who put them there.
That is so dishonest and hopefully someone can do
something about this increase.
Child support laws stink
I would like to make a statement about the child support
laws in Florida.
I think they stink. If you move out of state, they don't
extradite for child support.
My ex-son-in-law moved to South Carolina, and he is
behind $15,000. There is a warrant out for his arrest in Flori-
da, but we can't go to South Carolina to get him. My daugh-
ter is raising four children, and he is free and clear.
In response to
'Dogs should not be on the beach'
In response to the person who wrote in on Sept. 18, about
the dogs on the beach, you should re-read what you wrote
because you brought up a very major point. You said what
about diapers, food, potato chip bags and cans? Is that
healthy?
No it's not. They harm the environment.
Allowing dogs on the beach and assuming that their fecal
matter floating off into the ocean is not harmful is wrong
also.
Now I ask, if people won't clean up their dirty diapers, left
over food, potato chip bags, cans and bottles what makes
you think adding dogs to this will be better?
Don't you think that a dog eating food left on the beach is
healthy? Do you think a dog grabbing at a filthy disposable
diaper is healthy? No.
The Smyrna Dunes Park is dog friendly and very nice.
Stop trying to get everything.
Personally, after your comments about how filthy our
public beaches are according to you I wouldn't want to
expose my dogs that I love very much to that disease infest-
ed area.
Now I don't think our beaches are that dirty. but you seem
to.

Honor homeowners
Think what would occur if the local community ran
its own mortgage company.
Taking the profit and commissions out of the mort-
gage market would see rates that are, let us say at
present six percent, be offered at half that.
If it's only for overhead, and no profit, a home
mortgage could be three percent in this current envi-
ronment.
Think how many more folks could afford to own a
home.
If this was exclusively for those who would actually
live in the home, and not for investment property, the

It is my understanding that Pythons are illegal in Florida

Does anyone check your ads prior to publishing?
Or is it better to allow ads that sell items that are illegal

Man arrested for
propositioning boy
A man who Daytona
Beach police said proposi-
tioned a boy in a Sear's
bathroom at the Volusia
Mall is under arrest.
Richard Smith, 65, was
picked up at his rural
DeLand area home after
the 13-year-old victim
identified Smith during a
photo line up in Illinois,
where the boy lives. The
victim was visiting family in
the area when he stopped
to use the men's restroom
on the second floor of the
Sears Store. Police said
Smith made a lewd com-
ment then exposed himself
and touched himself in
front of the boy. Police said
the boy was so frightened,
that when he ran from the
bathroom, he ran out of his
shoes. A mall employee saw
store surveillance of the
suspect leaving the bath-
room on television and
recognized him because he
brought jewelry. She gave
police a name and when
investigators interviewed
Smith, he didn't deny being
in the bathroom but said he
did nothing wrong. Accord-
ing to the arrest report,
Smith told investigators the
boy was the aggressor,
peaking under his stall and
looking at Smith when he
came out and used a urinal.
Smith admitted the boy
could have seen something
when he turned toward
him, but in the report,
Smith told investigators he
covered himself and said he
would never deliberately
expose himself because he's
in the ministry.
Woman critically
injured in fire
A woman was critically
burned when fire erupted
in her home on Forest
Ridge Drive. Robin Pond
was home with her hus-
band Floyd and he got out,
but Mrs. Pond's daughter
Jessica said for some reason
her mother walked toward
the flames trying to put
them out with a bucket and
suffered second and third
degree burns over much of
her body. Investigators
think the fire started in the
carport and then quickly
spread to the house,
trapping the victim.
Rescuers were able to save
the couples animals, but
ramifications are fantastic. Many of those who now
rent would be able to own. Many who now face foreclo-
sure on sub prime scams would still be in those homes.
Our economy would stimulate enormously! More
construction, more cabinets being built, doors, win-
dows, you name it. Many industries would be resur-
rected from this simple action by government.
After all, what does a mortgage company really
create? Nothing!
They simply loan money for profit, lots of profit at
that. We all know that a $100,000 home, after a 30-year

Rescuers respond
to accidents
Edgewater rescuers were
called to two different
traumatic car accidents in
the space of just a few
hours. In the first incident,
responders found a car
wrapped around a tele-
phone pole on Old Mission
Road, near the entrance to
the Magnolia Village
community. Two people
were in the car and rescuers
quickly removed one of
them, but they needed
hydraulic extrication tools
for the second victim who
was then airlifted to the
hospital with life-threaten-
ing injuries. Shortly before
that wreck, a pedestrian
was critically injured after
being hit at the intersection
of Woodley and South
Ridgewood Avenue. A
vehicle transport trailer
struck the victim as it was
backing up.
Drugs were at
center of robbery
Daytona Beach police
said drugs were at the
center of a home invasion
robbery on Bryon Street.
Kevin Stokes, who is
confined to a wheelchair,
said several suspects
showed up at his house
demanding to know where
the "stuff" was and when he
said he didn't know what
they were talking about, the
suspects threatened to kill
Stokes wife. Stoke said he
was cut several times with a
machete before the sus-
pects went into the house
and roused his young
stepson, who was sleeping
on the couch. The suspects
bullied the child according
to police, first cutting his
dreadlocks, then kicking
and punching the boy. The
suspects ransacked the
house and finally took off.
Stokes wife hid in a back
bedroom and wasn't hurt.

I chose the hospital ranked #1 for orthopedic outcomes.
Dr. Stan Beitscher underwent a partial knee replacement at Halifax Health in 2008. In order to provide patients with the very best
care, we made sure to bring in the most accomplished orthopedic surgeons. We put the most sophisticated technology in their
hands, and developed the safest, cleanest operating rooms. The result is an artificial implant that is more precise. Ajoint repair that
comes with less pain. A hip fracture with a shorter recovery, and everything else that goes hand in hand with ranking #1 in the state
for orthopedic outcomes. People travel hundreds of miles for care like this. But you don't have to.

'I1 swear Mom, the kidnapper kept my homework'
Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to
be true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because
it's online doesn't mean it's
true!
Boy fakes kidnapping to
hide bad grades
From news.aol.com: An
11-year-old boy got high
marks in storytelling after
staging a hoax to cover up
his bad grades.
Police said the boy faked
his kidnapping to avoid
bringing home a bad
report card, saying a man
with a pistol snatched him
after he left Ed White
Middle School.
The boy said the man
forced him into a "beat-up
car" and threatened to kill
him.
The student said he
.rP HOW WEIRD
IS THAT?!
V SEAN MCCARTHY
escaped by jumping out of
the car but wasn't able to
grab his book bag, which
contained the report card.
He ran to his grandpar-
ents' house and later
confessed to lying. His
grandfather called police
to apologize. Sgt. Mark
Roberts said police were
suspicious the boy was
able to "escape" with his
band instrument, but not
his book bag.
The boy faces no charges
at this time.
One in seven Germans
want Berlin Wall back?
From news.yahoo.com:
One in seven Germans
want the Berlin Wall back
because they were better
off when the country was
divided, according to an
opinion poll published on
ahead of the 20th anniver-
sary of its collapse on Nov.
9, 1989.
The survey of 1,002
Germans by the Forsa
Institute, published in
Stern magazine, said 15
percent of the country's 82
million long for the days
when there were two
Germanys. Some 16
percent pining for the wall
were westerners and 10
percent easterners.
Man accused of trading
dad's car for $50 in crack
From fresnobee.com:
Authorities arrested a man
they said tried to trade his
father's car for $50 worth
of crack cocaine.
Deputies arrested the
39-year-old man after his
74-year-old father report-
ed his Lincoln stolen.
When deputies arrived
at the father's home, they
saw the son walking up the
street. They determined
the car had been sold for
drugs. Deputies later saw
someone else driving the
Lincoln, and pulled it over.
The driver fled the moving
car, which hit two parked
cars.
Deputies caught the
driver, who was arrested
on suspicion of evading an
officer and resisting arrest.
The son was arrested on
suspicion of car theft.
Authorities did not release
the names of those
involved.
Retired woman shoots
two holes-in-one
From sfgate.com: Ruth
Day, a 64-year-old retiree
from northern England,
had the day of her life on
the golf course last week.
Day managed to shoot two
holes-in-one in the same
round atWhitley Bay Golf
Club, where she is a
member.
"A hole in one in itself is
usually pretty amazing,"
Day said in "The Journal," a
newspaper in northeast
England, "but I couldn't
believe it when I did the
same thing 10 holes further
on."
Day shot her first ace on
the 149-yard third hole on
Sept. 9. She added the
second on the 161-yard
13th.
Day said she has been
playing golf for about 10
years.
Baby born at 9:09 on
Sept. 9, 2009 weighs 9
pounds. 9 ounces
From msnbc.msn.com:
No doubt about it, the nines
have it.
Chuck Berendes of La
Crosse Wis. said he will
never forget the birthday of
his third child, born on the
ninth day of the ninth
month in the year 2009. Nor
will Berendes and his wife,
Polly, forget Henry Michael's
arrival time: 9:09 a.m. by
Cesarean section. But they
got the biggest laugh when
the newborn was placed on
the delivery room scale
following his birth.
Berendes said it was
metric scale so the doctor
did the math in his head,
but to make sure, he had the
nurse also do the conver-
sion. Berendes said they
broke into laughter when
the nurse told them Henry
weighed 9 pounds, 9
ounces.

unleash himself in his
Theatre of Death concert

Debuting in 1970, Mr.
Cooper soon turned the
music world upside
down, wearing outra-
geous clothing and
make-up, performing
loud, hard music framed
with sharp-edged lyrics.
"We were into fun, sex,
death and money
when everybody was into
peace and love," Cooper
explains. "We wanted to
see what was next. It
turned out we were next,
and we drove a stake
through the heart of the
Love Generation."
Theatre Of Death is a
brand new show devised
by Alice Cooper to shock
and thrill his legions of
Central Florida fans.
A recent review on
kansascity.com called
Theatre of Death, which
includes a beheading by
guillotine and Cooper
performing in a straight-
jacket, "a brutal slab of
rock theater set to a
heavy metal soundtrack."
Cooper performs his
many hits during the
show, including "School's
Out," "Welcome to My
Nightmare" and "Only
Women Bleed."

Arians are very high spirited.
You take on the greatest
challenges and usually
emerge victorious because
of the strong focus you give
the top priorities. You keep
your eye on the goal. This
unparalleled energy and
drive pushes you on to suc-
cess. With a keenly honed

there is no stopping you.

Sometimes it is a challenge
to find continuing motiva-

take care of details. The
solution is to work off a pri-
ority list or delegate to trust-

for signs that it is time to act.
This will raise your success
ratio a lot.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
The whole idea is to pace
yourself when working on
different projects so that you
have something left at the
end besides burnout. Live a
moderate life. You don't
have to do everything. You
are so strong. You will be

You are the best. Why is this

However, you must also set

know, how can you expect
anyone else to make you
happy? Make yourself happy
first. Only you know what is
truly right for you. Let your
heart guide you in the right
timing for action on your
dreams. Trust the prompting
of your inner desires. It is
your greatest truth.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct. 22
Set healthy, productive
boundaries for yourself and
work within them to the
fullest. Refuse to allow your-
self to be pushed past what
is acceptable for your greater
and higher good. However,
be flexible and open to
change. It's OK to bend
when needed, just don't
break. Let your strong con-
science guide you.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Release non-essential things
from your life to make room
for new and better ones
coming in. There are only so
many productive hours in a
day. Work eight, sleep eight
and use the other eight to do
the necessary things for your
life that keep you healthy,
informed, relaxed and in bal-
ance. Yours is a good life well
lived.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Courage in the face of adver-
sity is your strongest virtue.
Many quit or give up in the
face of adversity. You keep
on keeping on. This ability of
psyching yourself up each
day is what keeps you fresh
and focused. It drives the
blues away before they take
away your happiness. Now
your day is a big success.
Yeah!
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Act decisively on your imme-
diate goals. You are on the
edge of unprecedented
growth. It's like, "I've done
my work, it's time to play."
Now we're talking. This is
healthy and truthful. Keep on
honing your visionary skills.
The vision comes first, then
creative manifestation. These
are the stepping stones to
true happiness.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
One of your greatest
strengths is to dream and
then follow through and cre-
ate the vision. Stick to the
basics. Hone them and try
new ideas. You have true
magic in your spirit like few
others. Your love of beauty
and balance carries you on
when lesser earthly distrac-
tions try to sidetrack you. It's
your age, you know. Inspire
us.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
You grow in spirit every day.
Why? Because of your great,
sweet heart. Your inner
strength and beauty is a light
for everyone around you.
Continue to strengthen your
resolve, no matter what the
earthly side throws in your
path. You can do it. Shed the
old, embrace the new and
reach for the stars. It's your
destiny.

This amazing cake is better than a pot of gold
Hello, smart shoppers.
The holidays are
around the corner,
so I must repeat this
amazing cake for special
occasions in both the
original and the low-fat
version.
I found the recipe in a

teenager. It was so intrigu-
ing I saved it. Years later, I
made it for my father's
birthday. The fact that he
didn't like cake in any shape
or form didn't enter the
picture. He apologized, but
wouldn't even taste it. Dad
passed away 19 years ago,

his birthday was Feb. 16.
My granddaughter
Christy, another one who
doesn't like cake, requested
it for her birthday. She was
forewarned and promised
she would eat it, which she
did. While her birthday is in
January, we didn't get to
celebrate it until Feb. 16, her
great grandfather's birthday.
Happy birthday, great
grandpoppy!
This cake is a project, but
for a special occasion, you
can just count on the
applause. Enjoy, see you
next week.
This cake is large and
can't be changed; leftovers
freeze great. You can cut the
fat and cholesterol if you
use my recipe for a fat- and
cholesterol-free cake and by
substituting low-fat or fat-
free whipped topping for
the heavy cream.
I will repeat the recipe for
a fat and cholesterol free
cake for those of you who
missed it and then go onto
the recipe in its original
form.

END OF THE
RAINBOW CAKE
2 packages white cake mix
Food coloring (optional)
3/4-cup well-drained,
canned, crushed pine-
apple
1/2-teaspoon almond
extract
2 tablespoons granulated
sugar
1/2-cup finely chopped
pistachio nuts
1/2-cup apricot preserves,
slightly beaten
1/2-cup raspberry
preserves
1 quart heavy whipping
cream or 8 cups frozen
whipped topping*
2 tablespoons confec-
tioner's sugar
Day before: In two 8-inch
by 8-inch by 2-inch square
pans or two 8-inch round
pans, bake 1 package cake
mix according to the
package directions. Repeat.
Refrigerate four cooled,
wrapped cakes.
I prepare all of the
whipped cream mixtures
first and then layer the cake.
Early next day: Whip half
the cream, (2 cups). Heavy
cream doubles when
whipped, giving you 4 cups.
Refrigerate remaining
cream.
1. With long sharp knife,
split each of 3 cakes, making
6 layers. On large, low cake
plate, place one of the split
layers, cut side up.
2. With yellow color, tint
pineapple pale yellow; then
fold in one fourth of the
whipped cream. Spread
mixture on split layer; top
with second split layer, cut
side up.
3. With red color, brighten
raspberry jam; fold in one
fourth of the whipped
cream. Spread on second
layer; top with third split
layer cut side up.
4. With green color, tint
one fourth of whipped
cream pale green. Fold in
almond extract, granulated
sugar and nuts. Spread on
third layer; top with fourth
split layer, cut side up.
5. With yellow color,
brighten apricot preserves;
fold in rest of the cream.
Spread on fourth layer; top
with fifth split layer cut side
down. (Use rest of cake
elsewhere).
6. Refrigerate cake for at
least 2 hours to set.
7. Whip remaining 2 cups
of cream, adding confec-
tioner's sugar.
Frost top and sides of
cake, refrigerate until
serving time.
This cake is so tall you will
need dinner plates to serve
it. An electric knife cuts it
best. Decorate cake as you
choose. I used fresh cut,
washed flowers from the
garden. Remember, the
flowers are to decorate, not
to eat, just to look at.
WHIPPED CREAM
Whipped cream is
extremely tricky to catch it
just right before it turns to
butter. Use 2 tablespoons
confectioner's sugar to 2
cups heavy whipping
cream.
Use a high narrow bowl.
Chill bowl and beaters.
Using an electric mixer, beat
at high speed until frothy.
Add sugar and continue
beating, watching the cream
very carefully. It will start to
thicken. Continue beating,
scraping bowl occasionally.
The cream is whipped when
it starts to have a slight
"break-up" look. Over-
beating by just a few
seconds will suddenly turn
it into butter. It will become
a mass with water around it.
This makes enough to
frost two 8- to 9-inch layers.

Turf Facts #1
A benefit that everyone enjoys, usually without
notice, is turfgrass' tremendous cooling effect.
On a hot summer day, lawns will be 30 degrees cooler than
asphalt and 14 degrees cooler than bare soil.
The front lawns of eight houses have the cooling effect of about 70 tons
of air conditioning. That's amazing when the average home has an air
conditioner with just a three or four ton capacity.
The cooling effect of irrigated turf reduces the amount of fuel that must
be burned to provide the electricity which powers the air conditioners.
Watered when the grass plant needs it, turfgrass will very efficiently and
effectively use almost every drop.

The mysterious tides of Bulow Creek and High Bridge
One of the world's great
mysteries occurs in eastern
Volusia County each day
and goes mostly unnoticed.
The tide goes about its
business of rising and
falling with two periods of
high water and two of low
water in each 24-hour peri-
od.
This is called diurnal and
is true of most of the world,
but not all.
Why the rise and fall hap-
pens and keeps such a pre-
dictable schedule is not
fully understood.
To be sure, there are theo-
ries involving the sun and
lunar gravitational pulls
and of the effects of the
alignment of those two
heavenly bodies with the
earth, but trying to under-
stand it will give you a giant
headache.
Throw in the effects of
barometric pressure and
the pain may become

bry I be [a t
unbearable. We fisher folk
don't pay the tide much
attention until the fish stop
biting. That usually comes
with the 15 minutes or so of
slack tide between each
cycle.
Some of us have a favorite
tide to fish and the rest of us
just want it to be moving.
According to the experts,
the highest tides happen
with the new and full moon
phases. That phenomenon
is called a spring tide (no
relation to the season).
The lowest tides occur
when the moon is in its first
or third quarter. That is
called a neap tide. The
largest tidal fluctuation in
the world is at Nova Scotia's
Bay Of Fundy.
The most confusing tide
in the world (as far as I
know) is at Bulow Creek and
the mud flats west of High
Bridge.
I have seen the tide there
completely change direc-
tion every two hours. That
really can't happen for it
means that somewhere the
water is colliding. I have
discussed this happening
with many experienced
fishermen and have had no
one give me a possible
explanation. The conversa-
tion usually ends with
questions about the
amount of alcohol I had
consumed that day.
Not long ago, I took my
boat up to High Bridge at
dawn to find the water in
the river flowing north to
signal incoming tide from
Ponce Inlet.
After some time, I went
to a small stream that
always has a swift current.
Where it met the Halifax, I
cut my engine expecting
the tidal flow to carry me
in on the incoming tide.
To my surprise, the water
was flowing out. Worse,
while the tide was swiftly
flowing out in that stream
the water level along the
bank was rising. This is
where the alcohol reference
will come up again. That is
what was happening. I don't
know why. I just report 'em; I
don't explain 'em.
There was one other
fisherman there that
morning and I gingerly
inquired if he had noticed
what was happening. I was
very relieved when he
replied that he had seen
the same thing. If the
water can leave and rise at
the same time, why bother
with tide predictions at all.
It does seem to me that we
are squandering a great
opportunity here in Florida.
With so many people living
near tidal flows you would
think that by now someone
would have come out with a
reasonably priced water
driven turbine to provide a
portion of the electricity we
use. I do predict that one
day tidal power will light all
of Volusia County, but until
then I will have to be con-
tent with using it to drift my
skiff over the fishing
grounds.
Dan Smith has fished the
waters of Volusia County for
40 years. When he's not fish-
ing, the retired contractor is
heavily involved with the
Ormond Beach Historical
Trust. For questions or com-
ments send an e-mail to

Mara Classic proceeds benefit Cancer Alliance of Help and Hope
Football season is finally
here! To many of us
this means weekends
spent in our favorite recliner
with remote in one hand
and a cold beverage in
another, but to the Cancer
Alliance of Help and Hope
of Palm Beach County, it
means the annual Tim Mara
Celebrity Golf Classic is
right around the corner.
Celebrating its 14th year,
the classic is a two-day
event taking place Oct. 18-
19 at PGA National Resort &
Spa in Palm Beach Gardens.
The event will begin that
Sunday evening with a
cocktail reception, dinner
and auction beginning at 6
p.m., and will continue
Monday, morning with a
"Best 2-ball of Fivesome"
golf tournament that begins
8:30 a.m. after a hearty
continental breakfast.
Last year, a full field
participated in this annual
tournament held in memo-
ry of Tim Mara, former co-
owner of the NFL's NewYork
Giants who died in 1995
from Hodgkin's disease.
Mara spent many years as a
Jupiter resident, philanthro-
pist and owner of the town's
Super Sunday Restaurant.
Sunday's cocktail recep-
tion attendees will have the
opportunity to mix and
mingle with present and
former professional sports
celebrities, including
George Martin, this year's
recipient of the Joe Morri-
son Memorial Giants Good
GOLF
JAMES -
STAMMER
Guy Award. The award will
be presented to the former
Giants all-pro defensive end
by his former coach and
Miami Dolphins football
director Bill Parcells, the
2008 award honoree.
Martin, a 13 year star for
the NewYork Giants, gained
national attention in the
past year when he walked
from the George Washing-
ton Bridge in New Jersey to
San Diego, some 3,000
miles, to raise awareness to
the plight of the Sept. 11
World Trade center respon-
ders who have dealt with
medical expenses not
covered by their insurance.
Martin's heroic efforts raised
$2.5 million.
The event will feature
celebrities galore, including
Major League Baseball Hall
of Fame member, and my
favorite player of all time,
Mike Schmidt. Joining him
will be Football Hall of Fame
members Lawrence Taylor,
Joe Namath, along with
former football stars
Leonard Marshall, Tucker
Frederickson, Don Notting-
ham, Dale Dawson, Bill
Swain and Erich Barnes.
Port St. Lucie's own
slugger for the St. Louis
Cardinals, Rick Ankiel, along
with retired baseball greats
Jim Kaat and Keith Hernan-
dez, and the NBA's Richie
Guerin will tee it up as well.
Participants in the golf
tournament will compete
for first-, second- and third-
place awards, as well as the
longest drive and closest to
the pin. Included, will be
on-course beverages,
tournament souvenirs, a
tournament tote bag, and
more awards and prizes.
Following golf, an awards
luncheon will be held at
PGA National Resort & Spa
Golf Club, where there will
also be fabulous raffle
items, as well as a silent
auction.
Proceeds from this event
benefit the Cancer Alliance
of Help and Hope
(www.cahh.org), a grass-
roots, volunteer-governed
charitable organization
dedicated to improving the
quality of life of local
individuals and their
families touched by cancer.
The organization provides
need-based financial
assistance, information
resources and access to
services and support groups
in the community.
The center helps with
normal everyday living
expenses, such as rent,
utilities, insurance and
other expenses. Patients are
referred by cancer centers,
other nonprofits, oncolo-
gists and a variety of
agencies and individuals.
Event chairmen for the
Tim Mara Memorial
Celebrity Golf Classic are:
Joe Healey, Ed Croke, Ryan
Witkowski, Charles Fischer
and Tucker Frederickson.
Registration is $250 per
golfer and includes a ticket
to Sunday evening's festivi-
ties. If you'd like to attend
just the Sunday dinner and
cocktail event or just
Monday's luncheon, tickets
are available for $75 each.
