tourism officials hope a television ad
and some innovative activities help
put heads in beds at area hotels this
summer during a sour economy.
The TV ad, "Here's Your Stimulus
Package: The Daytona Beach Sum-

said Lori Campbell Baker, spokes-
woman for the Daytona Beach Area
Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"So many local people have talked
to me about that TV spot," she said.
'All of our campaigns get attention
but this ad has gotten the biggest
response."
The ad seems to be drawing atten-
tion in other areas also. Ms. Baker
said the Web site mentioned in the
ad, summersale.com, has received
10,000 hits since April.
The ad is broadcast mostly in Flori-
da, with some spots running in
Atlanta and Macon, GA.
Ms. Baker said the theory behind

Expert: FPL rate
hikes could be
disaster for ederldy
By Andrew Norris
For Hometown News
VOLUSIA COUNTY Lowell Wynn knows
how hard it is for many of the area's elderly to get
by on a fixed income.
As president of the Daytona Beach chapter of
the Association for the Advancement of Retired
Persons he has seen the difficult choices they
have to make.
"Some of these old folks have to decide to go
to the drug store or eat," said Mr. Wynn. "People
don't realize that as people get older, money is
hard to come by."
So when the Florida Public Service Commis-
sion recently held a public meeting to discuss a
30-percent base rate hike Florida Power & Light
is proposing, Mr. Wynn made sure he was there
to speak out against the "outrageous"request.
He was not alone.
More than 30 residents went before the com-
mission to voice their opinion, several lauding
FPL's efforts in restoring power after hurricanes
and work to better the community, but none
supporting the power company's request for the
rate hike.
"This 30-percent base rate increase is uncon-
ceivable, especially in these economic condi-
tions," said Daytona Beach resident Doug Little.
"(It's) shameful."
FPL representative Marlene Santos told the
commission that the utility needs the rate

PORT ORANGE The
city of Port Orange will
induct four new honorees
to the city's Wall of Honor
at a July 4 ceremony.
Judy Andersen, Doug
Clark, John King, Jr., and
George McMasters were
selected by the Wall of
Honor Committee for
being outstanding resi-
dents who have made a
positive impact on the
community.
The wall was estab-
lished in 1984 and is locat-
ed in the lobby of City
Hall.
Judy Andersen has con-
tributed her time and
energy to the community
for many years. First, she
served on the City's Plan-
ning Commission in the
1980s. Ms. Andersen was
then elected to the City
Council and eventually
served as Mayor of Port
Orange from 1988 to 1992.
Following her term as
Mayor, Ms. Andersen
served on the Volusia
County School Board.
A man of business,
Doug Clark will be
posthumously honored by
the Wall of Honor Selec-
tion Committee. Mr. Clark
has been part of the Port
Orange family for more
than 50 years. He devel-
oped several mobile home
parks and storage facili-
ties in Port Orange. A
silent champion of the
City and the business
community, Mr. Clark,
who was killed in a plane
crash last month, will be
missed.
The next inductee has
spent the last 20 years of
his life being actively
involved in the communi-
ty and City government.
John King, Jr. has volun-
teered his time to neigh-
borhoods and civic
groups. He was one of the
original citizens who
formed the Port Orange
Coalition of Homeowner
Associations in the late
1980s. Mr. King currently
serves on the City's Char-

the age of 92.
The final inductee is
another dedicated citizen
- George McMasters. A
long- time resident of Port

So when Brody wanted to
go to a special cross coun-

Lanigan wondered how she
was going to come up with
the $900 needed for the
trip.
"I don't like asking for
help and there they were,"
Ms. Lanigan said.
"They" were Grassroots
Giving, a non-profit group
established by Ormond
Beach resident Missy Gib-
bons, which helps pay for
extracurricular activities for
low-income children.
The group will be holding
a fitness challenge and bar-
becue on Saturday, July 11
to raise money for Brody
and other teens to partici-
pate in extracurricular
activities.
"This was a once-in-a-
lifetime chance for Brody to
go to camp," Ms. Gibbons
said. "Who knows who will
see him there?"
Ms. Gibbons previously
worked in foster care and
saw that many of the
"extras" for children fell
through the cracks.
"Instead of sitting back
and complaining, I decided
to do something," she said.
Two year ago, she found-

of rowing,
push-ups and
other exercis-

"So many
talented kids

opportunity to
do (the camps
or sports)," she
said. "I want to
grab hold of
these children
and fund these
enrichment
activities. They
can go on to
bigger and
brighter things."
Ms. Lanigan said she
knows how important
sports have been for her
children. She is glad the
community is stepping up
to help children who might
not be able to afford to par-
ticipate in sports.
"It's unbelievable," she
said. "It gave me a renewed
vision of our society that
people would pull together
like that."
Ms. Lanigan said she
can't speak highly enough
of Grassroots Giving.
"It's a wonderful organi-
zation," she said. "I recom-
mend it to every person I
talk to."
Ms. Gibbons said she and
the volunteers who work at
Grassroots Giving are just
doing what they love.
"We really want to do
something to give back to
the children," she said. "All
the money stays here local-
ly."
The July 11 fundraiser
will be held at Tactical Fit-
ness Ormond. The cost to
enter the challenge is $20,
which includes a barbecue
lunch afterward. Tickets for
the barbecue can be pur-
chased for $6.

Boat launch fees are too much
Living in Edgewater, I rarely use the New Smyrna Beach
north causeway ramp due to its congested conditions most
times.
Now, Liz Yancey, New Smyrna Beach Parks and Recre-
ation director, and the city commission are once again con-
sidering a $5 fee to launch a boat.
To top it off they will buy a $70,000 set of machines to
make collections of fees to avoid hiring an attendant.
It would also cause a hazard to traffic, which moves fairly
smoothly now, because trucks and trailered boats would be
backing onto the causeway road to collect the silly fee.
Ms. Yancey and the commission are once again fooling
themselves.
If this new fee is imposed, it will simply drive boaters to
Edgewater and/or Port Orange to the free ramps.
This will in turn overpopulate and crowd those already
congested ramps.
But make no mistake. If this happens those cities too will
no doubt want to be greedy and also induce a fee.
Will Ms. Yancey and the council be there with their hands
out when these toll taking machines break down?
We know better than that. They would have to face us to
do that.
Editor's note: Response from Liz Yancey, New Smyrna
Beach Parks and Recreation Director: The direction I got
from the (city commission) retreat is lam now on a fact-find-
ing mission. I felt like all of the commissioners are looking
for more information on the entire subject (boat ramp fees)
before they make up their minds. I amsure that once we get a
handle on what we are really looking at there will be many
opportunities for the public to voice their comments and
concerns.
Homes by the airport will have noise
When buying a home, the three things you should look
for are location, location and location.
If you buy a home next to a train track, you get train noise.
Buy next to a interstate, you get car/truck noise and when
you buy next to an airport, you get airplane noise.
So the question is, who is at fault for purchasing a home
around an airport?
Let's start taking responsibility for our own actions and
deeds.
Is State Farm here for us?
Have you seen the State Farm "I'll Be There" ad on TV?
It's a beautiful song, but don't believe the message.
State Farm has definitely not be "there" for us.
How can I find the American dream?
On Feb. 14, the company I worked for closed its doors per-
manently.
Like thousands of others here in the Daytona Beach area,
I found myself unemployed.
Ever the optimist, even at the young age of 60 years, I
decided it was time for a change.
Utilizing hard-saved 401K retirement dollars, I bought a
shiny new hot dog cart. The kind with the stainless steel grill
and the umbrella the whole works.
I did my homework and obtained a business license.
Now, I'm ready to do business, right? Wrong.
Next came the Florida resale certificate for sales tax, the
certificate of registration within the state of Florida for my
business, which also includes quarterly tax filings.
I took the mandatory food handlers course, passed a
lengthy test and obtained a certificate number as proof of
all this for Tallahassee.
I had to have my cart inspected by the health department.
Next, I purchased $1 million of liability insurance
required to be a food vendor.
Finally, I added the Florida trailer registration and license
for the cart.
After jumping through every hoop the state put before
me, I found out that Volusia County doesn't allow any
mobile food vending units, except for a few events per year.
I've been a working man all my life. I certainly don't want
to even begin to compete with anyone in the "established"

However, strange as it may sound, I don't want to be a
beach concessionaire.
After spending a lot of money and an incredible amount
of time, let me just say this. I'm out of a job. I'm 60 years old,
and Volusia County won't let me work.
I will stand on any corner, in front of any business, on any
lot anywhere, just so I don't have to accept government
assistance. I risk losing my family, my home and all the rest.
All I want to do is feed construction workers, a trucker or
smile at a happy kid with a face full of mustard.
Anybody want to help me understand what happened to
the American Dream?
Post office needed signed credit card
The U. S. Post Office will not accept a credit card unless it
is signed on the back.
Several years ago, I received a recommendation from an
employee of a major credit card company to never sign the
back of a credit card.
Instead, print in the signature space the letters CID (also
known as See identification).
This asks the vender to visually see photo identification of
the customer.
I have put CID on my credit cards for several years as have
a number of people I know and acceptance has never been
refused except by the U.S. Post Office.
I explained to the post office manager that there is no way
viewing a signature is any proof that the holder of the credit
card is the legal owner, whereas a photo ID is much more
reliable and protects both the cardholder and the purveyor.
Even correct signatures are often difficult, if not impossi-
ble to decipher.
Where is the logic and common sense in requiring the
back of credit cards be signed?
The signature proves nothing and does not protect the
security of my card nor does it protect the merchant.
Would you vote for president Obama again?
To all the local people who voted for President Obama, if
he ran for president next week would you vote for him
again?
He has this country so fouled up. He's going to go down in
history as the worse president we ever had.
I just bought the book "Catastrophe" telling about all his
blunders and mistakes.
The guy is in over his head and he doesn't know what he is
doing.
There are no liberal Republicans
There is no such thing as a liberal Republican.
Liberals some times pretend to be Republicans in order to
get elected in a conservative voting area.
Arlen Specter is a prime example. The Rockefeller family has
always switched parties back and forth from Republican to
Democrat whenever it was to their benefit. This is hardly any-
thing to be proud about.
Republicans who are gullible enough to vote for these, in
Foreclosure
From page Al
Port Orange City Manager
Ken Parker said they have
had some problems but not
enough to warrant an
extreme overhaul of city
ordinances.
"Foreclosure seems to be
the buzzword," he said. "We
look at foreclosures all the
time. We have the ordi-
nances in place."
Mr. Parker said the biggest
problem they face with fore-
closures is temporary -the
time in between when an
owner leaves and either the
bank or a new owner takes
over maintenance of the
home.
"That seems to be the
major problem area," he
said. "It depends on how
long the bank takes. Most of
the lenders do something."
If a city does enact an ordi-
nance, Mr. Parker wants to
make sure one group isn't
affected.
"We will put in a variety of
items to protect the taxpayer
in this," he said.
Kathy Harrison, corporate
communications manager
for the Wells Fargo Bank, said
local real estate agents hired
to sell the homes are respon-
sible for keeping them both
free of code enforcement
violations and safe for neigh-
bors.
Many foreclosed homes
are abandoned in a haste,
with the owners leaving
items such as lawn furniture
and swing sets all resting in
the yard.
Ms. Kunkle said she is
worried that those items
could become projectiles in
a severe storm or hurricane.
Such was the case recently
in New Smyrna Beach where
a half-constructed home
was put in foreclosure, leav-
ing stacks of wood trusses
and miscellaneous con-
struction tools laying in the
yard.
name only Republican candidates, deserve whatever they get.
Too many trees planted
I drove out Arlington Way in Ormond Beach, and they
have put palm trees along the street.
Everyone has five or six palm trees planted. They are
about four or five feet apart.
What a waste of money.
They overdid it.
RV parking rules don't allow
parking in the front yard
The South Daytona newsletter has issued a set of rules as
to where you can park.
Most of them make sense, except the following. RV's and
boats parked on your
own property must be hidden from view. Why?
Does anyone really care about seeing them? Does it lower
property value? Is it a jealousy issue?
They also state any RV's cannot be used as temporary liv-
ing quarters in a residential area.
So that means, I cannot allow an out of town guest to
park, hook up and stay conveniently in my driveway, but it
is perfectly legal for them to stay in a commercial RV park
for money, or park behind my fence and sleep on my floor.
I'll bet it would be legal for them to take turns driving
around the block all night while the other one sleeps.
The other ruling that grates on me is that if your car,
which has been parked in your driveway all year, became in
need of repair in order to move, you are now required to
store it in an enclosed building. Why? The letter does not say
the repercussions, but I would guess it would be towed
away at the owner's expense to an area that is most definite-
ly not enclosed and would include hefty daily charges.
Editor's note: Response from Helen Wert, assistant commu-
nity development director, RVs and Boats are not required to
be hidden from view; city code only requires that they are
parked in the side yard or rear yard there are no requirements
to be parked behind an opaque fence or hidden from view.
The city enacted the RV/boat parking ordinance in 1989
after lengthy discussion and meetings with residents. The
city council appointed a "resident's committee" to formu-
late these regulations. Yes, realtors were concerned with
declining property values. Yes, RV's and boats are required
to be operable and properly tagged.
We do allow 48- consecutive hours for temporary parking
in the driveway while unloading, loading and minor main-
tenance.
RV's cannot be used for temporary living quarters in a res-
idential area.
Residential areas are zoned for single-family dwellings. A
campground is the correct location to park an RV for use as
temporary living quarters.
All of these regulations have been enacted for the protec-
tion of property values and the health and welfare of resi-
dents in adjoining properties. These regulations were
adopted through public hearings where residents had an
opportunity to participate in the proceedings.
Ms. Kunkle said they were
able to locate someone to
secure the materials but that
might not always be the case
because of legal issues.
Ryan Williams, operations
coordinator for Volusia
County Emergency Manage-
ment said there is a potential
problem with dangerous
debris at foreclosed homes
but safety comes first.
"I don't think the magni-
tude is to the extent that we
have a problem," he said. "In
an emergency we can write
ordinances to waive that.
When you declare a state of
emergency, a lot of things are
waived."
Ms. Harrison, a Wells
Fargo representative, said
the same local real estate
agents are responsible for
making a home safe.
"When a hurricane warn-
ing is issued, Wells Fargo is in
contact with the local real
estate agents to ensure they
have prepared our homes
for the storm."

Our friends on the beach: Dolphins, seagulls,

the beach by the Flagler

a seagull that had been

our car trying to avoid the

green lure hung on the

"We go on biker sites and

It's an inexpensive way to
promote the area, she said.
The bureau has some
young interns who are adept
at using the Internet for pro-
motions, Ms. Baker said.
One intern, Chadwick
Leonard of Bethune-Cook-
man University, created a
contest on YouTube with a
Daytona Beach vacation as a
prize.
"It's great to have this
youthful creativity at the
Bureau," Ms. Baker said.
It's too early to tell what
kind of impact the "Summer
Sale" ad will have on busi-
ness, said Bob Davis, CEO of
the Hotel/Lodging Associa-
tion ofVolusia County.
Mr. Davis said, however,
that he is encouraged
because he has noticed full
parking lots at hotels lately
and Volusia County is report-
ing heavy traffic at area recre-
ation spots including the
oceanfront.
Tom DeLaney, vice presi-
dent of sales and marketing
for Elite Hospitality, which
operates four hotels in the
area, also said he could not
predict how business would
be this summer but said visits
to the company Web site
were encouraging.
"Hits to our Web site are
not down compared to a year
ago. In today's economy I call
that a success," he said.
Bus tours are another
option for bringing in
tourists.
The Bureau has partnered
with other visitor bureaus in
Central Florida in a promo-
tion called "Sunrise to Sun-
set."
Each bureau has suggested
three-day itineraries for their
area. The goal is to get tour
planners to create trips
across Central Florida.
Sandy Lucania, who han-
dles tours for the Bureau, said
the "Sunrise to Sunset" pro-
motion has a lot of potential.
For example, the itineraries
could be used by private indi-
viduals planning to explore
Central Florida, she said.
"Hopefully this will show
some fruition in the future,"
Ms. Lucania said.
Recently, the budget for the
Daytona Beach Area Conven-
tion and Visitors Bureau was
reduced from $7.2 million to
$5.3 million because of
declining revenue from
tourism. The Bureau
depends on funding from a
"bed tax" on the hotels.

I chose the hospital ranked #1 for orthopedic outcomes.
Dr. Stan Beitscher underwent a partial knee replacement at Halifax Health in 2008. In order to provide patients
with the very best care, we made sure to bring in the most accomplished orthopedic surgeons. We put the most
sophisticated technology in their hands, and developed the safest, cleanest operating rooms. The result is an
artificial implant that is more precise. Ajoint repair that comes with less pain. A hip fracture with a shorter
recovery, and everything else that goes hand in hand with ranking #1 in the state for orthopedic outcomes.
People travel hundreds of miles for care like this. But with Halifax Health right here, you don't have to.

Queen, Areca palms add tropical flair to any yard
One of the best ways
to add some
tropical flair to your
yard is with palm trees.
There are dozens of
choices, some common
and some exotic (and
expensive).
This week I want to talk
about a couple of the more
common varieties.
The queen palm is
probably one of the most
common in our area. They
are native to Brazil,
Paraguay and northern
Argentina. This palm is
very commonly used as a
landscape accent. Queen
palms have been assigned
the name cocos plumose.
The queen palm is a very
hardy plant that is cold
tolerant, down to 20
degrees. The tree is also
relatively drought tolerant
and requires little in the
way of watering once the
plant is established. The
queen palm can grow to 50
feet.
The queen palm boasts a
smooth, straight trunk
that is marked with evenly
spaced leaf scars. The top
of the tree is marked by a
large canopy consisting of
feathery-like fronds. The
leaves are dark green and
have a graceful and
tropical appearance.
The queen palm also has
a spectacular display of
fruit and flower clusters
that give this tree a very
unique appearance. In
each fruit is a seed with
three spots.
Queen palms can be
used in many landscape
environments, including
lining pathways or drive-
ways, grouped together to
GARDEN

used individually to accent
garden areas or for an
accent on your front lawn.
The uses are endless and
the beauty is amazing.
There is one downside
with these palms. Over the
years, there has been a
fungus disease that is
affecting some of the trees.
Personally, none of mine
have ever been affected.
Another common palm
found just about every-
where is the areca palm.
The areca has feather-like
green fronds that radiate
from several trunks, which
make this a good choice
for use as a border. Areca
palms are slow growing
plants that will grow wider
before they get taller.
One common problem
with these plants is the
browning out of the plant
tips. This is normal and
will happen in almost all
cases. These palms require
bright, indirect light and if
you use the plant indoors,
keep it within 5- to 8-feet
of a bright window.
If you plant the palms
outdoors or use them as
borders, plant them in a
part of your yard that gets
some shade, either from
the structure or from
larger trees. If the areca
receives too much direct
sunlight, it will cause
browning.
The areca palm requires

a fair amount of water, but
it will not do well in an
area that does not drain
properly. It does not like to
sit in standing water.
In addition, over time
you may notice a slight
yellowing of the leaves.
This is normal and using
simple Epsom salts around
your palms can often offset
the yellowing. Use about a
half-cup around each
plant and water in. Apply
the tonic around your
plants about every month
or so. This will help keep
the lush green color intact.

Brief
From page Al
College, because Diaz had
allegedly fired shots into
the air at an apartment
complex on Segrave Street
after a fight. Police said
Diaz took off at a high rate
of speed, turning onto
Boulder Drive where he hit
a truck and a mailbox
before bailing out of the
car. South Daytona officer
Matt Minaberry was still in
pursuit, but after the
suspect got out of his car,
Minaberry said Diaz fired
at him twice. Luckily the
gun jammed as the officer
took cover behind his
motorcycle. Investigators
said that's when the
suspect ran into a garage at
a duplex where a couple
was caring for their three
young grandchildren.
Kenneth Carson was in the
garage, yelled for his wife
and grandchildren to lock
themselves in a bedroom.
Police were able to get the
family out of the room
through a window and Mr.
Carson got out of the line
of fire himself. Eventually,
police said Diaz surren-
dered. He is facing a host of
charges, including
attempted murder on a law
enforcement officer.
Man faces charges in
attempted bank
robbery
Port Orange police arrest-
ed a Palm Coast man who
allegedly told a bank
employee he needed
$40,0000 and said he had a
bomb in his laptop bag.
Gregory Stephen Hale was
arrested at his home after
officers got an anonymous

tip identifying Hale as the
suspect. Investigators said
Hale walked into a
Wachovia Bank on South
Nova Road and talked for
some time with an employ-
ee about getting a loan. As
they wrapped up the
conversation, police said
Hale suddenly told the
employee he was in dire
financial straights following
the death of his wife several
months earlier, and needed

Loggerhead turtle
vanishes
Wildlife officials spent
days last week looking for
an adult loggerhead turtle
that vanished from the
beach in Ponce Inlet. The
turtle was spotted walking
up the beach early one
morning and left tracks
leading up to the Beach
Street ramp, but the tracks
stopped where the pave-
ment began. County
environmentalist don't
know what became of the
turtle that may have been
trying to nest on the sand.
It's illegal to harm or harass
loggerheads, which typical-
ly weigh more than 200
pounds.
Coast Guard rescues
boaters
A group of fishermen had
to be rescued off Ponce
Inlet when the boat they
where in became disabled
in rough seas. The six men
were about 20 miles off
shore when the 38-foot boat
lost all electric power, but
Coast Guard officials said
the men did have a vital
piece of equipment on
board that sent out a
distress signal. It's called an
emergency position
indicating radio beacon or
EPIRB and with that signal,
rescuers were able to
exactly pin point the men's
position. The fishermen,
including one from Port
Orange, were in good shape
when Coast Guard officers
got to them. The men had
to be towed back to shore, a
three-hour ordeal, but all
were grateful they were
found. Coast Guard officials
said emergency transpon-
ders are critical to boaters
and can become lifesavers
in some situations.
Beach, speedway big
draw for holiday
The Fourth of July holiday
is upon us and local
business owners are hoping
Volusia County beaches will
be a big draw, along with
the Daytona International
Speedway where they are
geared up for the running of
the Coke Zero 400. The
economy has certainly
impacted ticket sales, but
speedway officials are still
counting on a big turnout
and along the beach front,
some hotels are offering
deals to draw the crowds.
Many cities in EastVolusia
County are hosting fire-
works shows, including
Daytona Beach, where the
show lights up the city from
the Main Street Pier.
However, county officials
warn visitors that personal
fireworks are not allowed
on the beach to protect sea
creatures that can ingest
the debris.
School district cutting
administration
positions
We told you recently their
would be no more teacher
layoffs in Volusia County for
next school year, but
students will see fewer
administrators. Volusia
County is still down $9
million after making
dramatic budget cuts and
instilling a pay for play
program with athletics.
School district officials
announced they will save
nearly $2 million by cutting
one assistant principal
position at each of the
county's nine high schools
and having several elemen-
tary schools share a princi-
pal. No one is losing a job
according to officials,
however, some will be in
new positions. The changes
are also being absorbed
through retirements and
resignations.

Remove any limitations you
have placed on yourself and
move up to new heights of

honor yourself as you do
others. Call on spirit to awak-
en and renew the light with-
in you, so your path may be
clearly seen. Trust the uni-
verse and it will bring you
great rewards.
Taurus-April 20-May 20
There is important work to
be done, starting with your-
self. The first step is to forgive
and release the past. Free
yourself of accumulated bag-
gage. Move ahead and
dream new and larger
dreams. Life is a continuing
learning experience. When
things don't work out as
planned, new and better
things are on the way. Be
patient.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
Keep life simple. Now is not
the time to complicate
things. Form choices and
opinions on what you now
know, not on what you aren't
sure of. Act when it feels
right. If you aren't sure, wait.
Running away is not the
answer. Our challenges fol-

your heart. It will always tell
the truth if you are open to it
and listening.
Cancer-June 22-July 22
You have one of the
strongest hearts in the uni-

always understand you, but
they sure are in awe of your
character and determination.
Why? Because you never

Why? Because you let your

Beachside area boasts affordable fun, history
By Tammy Roberts

BREVARD COUNTY -
With the Indian River to the
west and the Atlantic Ocean
to the east, Brevard Coun-
ty's beachside communities
offer a plethora of enjoyable
activities for visitors and
residents alike.
So, instead of traveling
elsewhere this summer,
consider a visit to the Space
Coast, while spending less
cash and gaining a new
appreciation for Brevard's
beloved beaches.
While Melbourne Beach is
known for its small-town
feel and casual atmosphere,
it is also the county's oldest
beachside community,
established in 1883, accord-
ing to the town of Mel-
bourne Beach's Web site,
www. melbournebeachfl.org.
In 1921, the original Mel-
bourne Causeway was built,
connecting Melbourne
Beach to the mainland via
what is now known as Indi-
alantic.
Some of the town's earliest
buildings (or replicas of the
originals), such as the Ryck-
man House, the Melbourne
Beach Post Office and the
town's community chapel,
still stand today.
For a deeper look into the
town's history, stop in the
long-standing Old Town
Hall History Center at 2373
Oak Street, which is open
Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3
p.m.
If fishing is your forte,
Melbourne Beach is home
to some of the county's
most popular fishing spots,
TRAVEL
both along the beach and in
the Indian River Lagoon.
Rent a kayak, charter a
boat or throw out a line
from the Melbourne Beach
Pier.
Sebastian Inlet State Park,
at the south end of A1A,
doubles as a popular fishing
area, as well as a recognized
surfing spot for locals.
If you're looking to get
away without technically
leaving the county, pack up
the kids and the camping
gear and spend a few nights
under the star-filled sky at

Both tents and RVs are
permitted, and many camp-
sites back the Indian River
Lagoon.
Heading north from Mel-
bourne Beach, there are a
variety of other ways to stay
active.
Paradise and Boardwalk
beaches in Indialantic are
well-known hot spots, while
the newly renovated High-
tower Beach Park in Satellite
Beach is scheduled to be
completed by late summer.
Sea turtle nesting season
in Brevard began June 1 and
guided hatchling tours are a
must-see.
For information, visit the
Sea Turtle Preservation
Society Web site, www.sea-
turtlespacecoast.org.
From jet skiing and boat-
ing to wakeboarding and
canoeing, the Space Coast is
also known for its water
sports. But some residents,
who have lived here all their
lives, rarely take advantage
of their location.
"I really don't get out there
and experience all that this
area has available as much
as I'd like to," said Tanya
Lawson, a Satellite Beach
resident and mother of two
college students. "My hus-
band bought me a kayak for
our anniversary, and our
plan is to take it out a lot
more this summer. We really
are lucky to live in such a
beautiful place."
If the cost is keeping you
away, owning one of these
watercrafts is not a require-
ment. There are dozens of
vendors from Melbourne
Beach north to Cape
Canaveral that rent by the
hour or by the day.
When the sun gets too hot,
another option is to bring
the family out for a day of
shopping along Indialantic's
Fifth Avenue, which is home

DO YOU KNOW HOW SLEEP MAY
IMPACT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
ARE YOU AT RISK FOR OSA? (obstructive sleep apnea)
V Do you snore?
/ Do you stop breathing during sleep?
v Do you wake up with a headache?
/ Do you feel sleepy during the day?
/ Do you have a history of high blood pressure?
If you answered yes to two or more of these questions,
talk to your doctor. Your doctor can assess your
need to have further evaluation of your
breathing while you sleep. A sleep study will
diagnose whether you have OSA and indicate
the best treatment.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF
TREATING OSA?
Clinical studies have shown that treatment of
OSA may:
* lower blood pressure
* improve daytime stress on the heart
* relieve excess stress on the heart
* reduce the potential risk for heart
attack, stroke and heart disease.

Sea trout just as good as their freshwater brethren
Rainbow, brown, lake,
brook, cutthroat, dolly
vardan, char, golden
and steelhead trout are
some of the most sought-
after fish in the world.
Just as prized as their
fresh water namesakes, the
saltwater spotted sea trout
is the mainstay of inshore
fishing in Volusia County.
Despite their resemblance
to the rainbow and brook
varieties, sea trout are not
related to any of the fresh
water species.
In fact, they are more
closely related to the
croaker than the fish that
haunt the nation's rushing
streams.
Make no mistake about it,
those of us who fish the
brackish inshore waters
would not trade our trout
for all of the others com-
bined.
Simply they are our
treasures, the only reason
some of us take up a rod at
all. Prolific breeders, they
occupy all of the coastal
waters around the state and
are always ready to bite.
As game as they come, the
spotted sea trout will hit
most anything.
They love top water lures,
but will scoop a jig off the
bottom in a second.
Mullet, shrimp, crab or
anything else that lives in
the sea is a potential bait.
They are just flat out fun to
catch.
Sure, snook are better
jumpers, and reds are more
powerful, but neither are as
ready to play as a trout.
Once, years ago, Al
Houser and I were fishing
the wide expanse of Mos-
quito Lagoon at dawn when
we found a school of 14-
inch trout.
We'll just catch a few and
move on, we said, but we
wound up staying in that
spot the entire day.
They were hitting top
water walk-the-dog lures,
and we could not bring
ourselves to leave such fun.
No matter that none
would make the 15-inch
minimum to make them
keepers.
I don't know how many
we caught that morning,
but it had to be 80.
The strict limit that is now
in place allowing only four
fish a day and only one over
20 inches has been great for
area fishing.
Years ago, I arrived back at
the old Cedar Creek fish
camp in New Smyrna about
the same time as a nice little
13-foot Boston Whaler.
The other fisherman and I
exchanged the usual
pleasantries with him
asking how I did.
I told him that I had a
couple trout, and I could tell
that if I didn't ask him how
he did he was going to
burst, so I asked. I got 60, he
said.
My heart sank. On the
way over to look into his
cooler, I already knew what I
would see. That box was full
of trout no longer than 8
inches.
That is precisely why the
limit is a good one.
Lana, my long-suffering
wife eats a lot of fish, as you
may expect.
While I enjoy mine fried
with salt and condiments
she eats hers poached with
out so much as salt or
pepper.
As pure as you can do it.
Through the years, I have
dragged home most of the
critters that swim in these
waters, some tasty, some
not so much.
Lana claims nothing
compares to sea trout.
Anyone who eats fish that
plain deserves a listen.
It was, perhaps, their
good taste and ready
availability that made them
scarce back in the early '90s.
I am happy to say they
have rebounded nicely now.
I expect someday soon
someone inVolusia County
will set a new state record
for largest trout ever caught.
It would take a fish of near
18 pounds, but I believe it
will happen.
If you are one of those
fancy fishermen who like to
get all dressed up in Aber-
crombie & Fitch duds to
chase rainbow trout with a
fly rod, you can do that with
sea trout, but unless you
wish to be made sport of
yourself, I would avoid the
Oak Hill area altogether.
Dan Smith has fished the
waters of Volusia County for
40 years. When he's not
fishing, the retired contrac-
tor is heavily involved with
the Ormond Beach Histori-
cal Trust. For questions or
comments send an e-mail to
apes 123@mybluelight.com.

VOLUSIA COUNTY -
Brody Lanigan has never let
anything stop him from
succeeding.

a 3.82 GPA.
Brody also has Tourette's

She organized a fitness
challenge at Planet Fitness
in Ormond Beach, as well
as a dinner and silent auc-
tion. Over the two years,
Grassroots Giving raised
more than $16,000.
Ms. Gibbons said so far
they have been able to help
all of the people applying
for help.
This year's fitness chal-

trips adds up quickly.
So when Brody wanted to
go to a special cross coun-
try camp in Oregon, Ms.
Lanigan wondered how she
was going to come up with
the $900 needed for the
trip.
"I don't like asking for
help and there they were,"
Ms. Lanigan said.
"They" were Grassroots
Giving, a non-profit group
established by Ormond
Beach resident Missy Gib-
bons, which helps pay for
extracurricular activities for
low-income children.
The group will be holding
a fitness challenge and bar-
becue on Saturday, July 11
to raise money for Brody
and other teens to partici-
pate in extracurricular
activities.
"This was a once-in-a-
lifetime chance for Brody to
go to camp," Ms. Gibbons
said. "Who knows who will
see him there?"
Ms. Gibbons previously
worked in foster care and
saw that many of the
"extras" for children fell
through the cracks.
"Instead of sitting back
and complaining, I decided
to do something," she said.
Two year ago, she found-
ed Grassroots Giving and
igan
a competition
of rowing,
push-ups and
other exercis-
es, Ms. Gib-
bons said.
"So many
talented kids
don't have the
opportunity to
do (the camps
or sports)," she
said. "I want to
grab hold of
these children
and fund these
enrichment
activities. They
can go on to
bigger and
brighter things."

I certainly don't want
to even begin to compete with anyone in the "established"

business community.
However, strange as it may sound, I don't want to be a
beach concessionaire.
After spending a lot of money and an incredible amount
of time, let me just say this. I'm out of a job. I'm 60 years old,
and Volusia County won't let me work.
I will stand on any corner, in front of any business, on any
lot anywhere, just so I don't have to accept government
assistance. I risk losing my family, my home and all the rest.
All I want to do is feed construction workers, a trucker or
smile at a happy kid with a face full of mustard.
Anybody want to help me understand what happened to
the American Dream?
Post office needed signed credit card
The U. S. Post Office will not accept a credit card unless it
is signed on the back.
Several years ago, I received a recommendation from an
employee of a major credit card company to never sign the
back of a credit card.
Instead, print in the signature space the letters CID (also
known as See identification).
This asks the vender to visually see photo identification of
the customer.
I have put CID on my credit cards for several years as have
a number of people I know and acceptance has never been
refused except by the U.S. Post Office.
I explained to the post office manager that there is no way
viewing a signature is any proof that the holder of the credit
card is the legal owner, whereas a photo ID is much more
reliable and protects both the cardholder and the purveyor.
Even correct signatures are often difficult, if not impossi-
ble to decipher.
Where is the logic and common sense in requiring the
back of credit cards be signed?
The signature proves nothing and does not protect the
security of my card nor does it protect the merchant.
Would you vote for president Obama again?
To all the local people who voted for President Obama, if
he ran for president next week would you vote for him
again?
He has this country so fouled up. He's going to go down in
history as the worse president we ever had.
I just bought the book "Catastrophe" telling about all his
blunders and mistakes.
The guy is in over his head and he doesn't know what he is
doing.
There are no liberal Republicans
There is no such thing as a liberal Republican.
Liberals some times pretend to be Republicans in order to
get elected in a conservative voting area.
Arlen Specter is a prime example. The Rockefeller family has
always switched parties back and forth from Republican to
Democrat whenever it was to their benefit. This is hardly any-
thing to be proud about.
Republicans who are gullible enough to vote for these, in
Foreclosure
From page Al
Port Orange City Manager
Ken Parker said they have
had some problems but not
enough to warrant an
extreme overhaul of city
ordinances.
"Foreclosure seems to be
the buzzword," he said. "We
look at foreclosures all the
time. We have the ordi-
nances in place."
Mr. Parker said the biggest
problem they face with fore-
closures is temporary -the
time in between when an
owner leaves and either the
bank or a new owner takes
over maintenance of the
home.
"That seems to be the
major problem area," he
said. "It depends on how
long the bank takes. Most of
the lenders do something."
If a city does enact an ordi-
nance, Mr. Parker wants to
make sure one group isn't
affected.
"We will put in a variety of
items to protect the taxpayer
in this," he said.
Kathy Harrison, corporate
communications manager
for the Wells Fargo Bank, said
local real estate agents hired
to sell the homes are respon-
sible for keeping them both
free of code enforcement
violations and safe for neigh-
bors.
Many foreclosed homes
are abandoned in a haste,
with the owners leaving
items such as lawn furniture
and swing sets all resting in
the yard.
Ms. Kunkle said she is
worried that those items
could become projectiles in
a severe storm or hurricane.
Such was the case recently
in New Smyrna Beach where
a half-constructed home
was put in foreclosure, leav-
ing stacks of wood trusses
and miscellaneous con-
struction tools laying in the
yard.
name only Republican candidates, deserve whatever they get.
Too many trees planted
I drove out Arlington Way in Ormond Beach, and they
have put palm trees along the street.
Everyone has five or six palm trees planted. They are
about four or five feet apart.
What a waste of money.
They overdid it.
RV parking rules don't allow
parking in the front yard
The South Daytona newsletter has issued a set of rules as
to where you can park.
Most of them make sense, except the following. RV's and
boats parked on your
own property must be hidden from view. Why?
Does anyone really care about seeing them? Does it lower
property value? Is it a jealousy issue?
They also state any RV's cannot be used as temporary liv-
ing quarters in a residential area.
So that means, I cannot allow an out of town guest to
park, hook up and stay conveniently in my driveway, but it
is perfectly legal for them to stay in a commercial RV park
for money, or park behind my fence and sleep on my floor.
I'll bet it would be legal for them to take turns driving
around the block all night while the other one sleeps.
The other ruling that grates on me is that if your car,
which has been parked in your driveway all year, became in
need of repair in order to move, you are now required to
store it in an enclosed building. Why? The letter does not say
the repercussions, but I would guess it would be towed
away at the owner's expense to an area that is most definite-
ly not enclosed and would include hefty daily charges.
Editor's note: Response from Helen Wert, assistant commu-
nity development director, RVs and Boats are not required to
be hidden from view; city code only requires that they are
parked in the side yard or rear yard there are no requirements
to be parked behind an opaque fence or hidden from view.
The city enacted the RV/boat parking ordinance in 1989
after lengthy discussion and meetings with residents. The
city council appointed a "resident's committee" to formu-
late these regulations. Yes, realtors were concerned with
declining property values. Yes, RV's and boats are required
to be operable and properly tagged.
We do allow 48- consecutive hours for temporary parking
in the driveway while unloading, loading and minor main-
tenance.
RV's cannot be used for temporary living quarters in a res-
idential area.
Residential areas are zoned for single-family dwellings. A
campground is the correct location to park an RV for use as
temporary living quarters.
All of these regulations have been enacted for the protec-
tion of property values and the health and welfare of resi-
dents in adjoining properties. These regulations were
adopted through public hearings where residents had an
opportunity to participate in the proceedings.
Ms. Kunkle said they were
able to locate someone to
secure the materials but that
might not always be the case
because of legal issues.
Ryan Williams, operations
coordinator for Volusia
County Emergency Manage-
ment said there is a potential
problem with dangerous
debris at foreclosed homes
but safety comes first.
"I don't think the magni-
tude is to the extent that we
have a problem," he said. "In
an emergency we can write
ordinances to waive that.
When you declare a state of
emergency, a lot of things are
waived."
Ms. Harrison, a Wells
Fargo representative, said
the same local real estate
agents are responsible for
making a home safe.
"When a hurricane warn-
ing is issued, Wells Fargo is in
contact with the local real
estate agents to ensure they
have prepared our homes
for the storm."

Our friends on the beach: Dolphins, seagulls,

The Volusia County
Beach Patrol serves
us faithfully every
day. Their officers and
lifeguards protect us from
rip currents, jellyfish and
our selves; they save us
from drowning, sharks,
jellyfish and even the ocean
itself. They patrol our
beaches with friendship,
smiles and loyalty, while
upholding county and local

Recently, my wife and I
were drinking our coffee on
the beach by the Flagler
Avenue entrance in New
Smyrna Beach. We noticed
a seagull that had been
hooked by a 4-inch fishing
lure standing quietly near
our car trying to avoid the
wind. The fluorescent
green lure hung on the
seagull's chest as if it were a
necktie he'd worn for last
evening's Christmas parade
down Flagler Avenue. But
in reality, it might as well
have been a noose.
We sat there trying to
think of a solution, while
the gull stood only looking
at us hoping for an answer.
Occasionally other gulls
would notice the lure, and
would grab at it hoping for
their piece of the forbidden

she said.
"We go on biker sites and
car enthusiast sites, for exam-
ple, and talk about the really
great festivals we have in
Daytona Beach."
It's an inexpensive way to
promote the area, she said.
The bureau has some
young interns who are adept
at using the Internet for pro-
motions, Ms. Baker said.
One intern, Chadwick
Leonard of Bethune-Cook-
man University, created a
contest on YouTube with a
Daytona Beach vacation as a
prize.
"It's great to have this
youthful creativity at the
Bureau," Ms. Baker said.
It's too early to tell what
kind of impact the "Summer
Sale" ad will have on busi-
ness, said Bob Davis, CEO of
the Hotel/Lodging Associa-
tion ofVolusia County.
Mr. Davis said, however,
that he is encouraged
because he has noticed full
parking lots at hotels lately
and Volusia County is report-
ing heavy traffic at area recre-
ation spots including the
oceanfront.
Tom DeLaney, vice presi-
dent of sales and marketing
for Elite Hospitality, which
operates four hotels in the
area, also said he could not
predict how business would
be this summer but said visits
to the company Web site
were encouraging.
"Hits to our Web site are
not down compared to a year
ago. In today's economy I call
that a success," he said.
Bus tours are another
option for bringing in
tourists.
The Bureau has partnered
with other visitor bureaus in
Central Florida in a promo-
tion called "Sunrise to Sun-
set."
Each bureau has suggested
three-day itineraries for their
area. The goal is to get tour
planners to create trips
across Central Florida.
Sandy Lucania, who han-
dles tours for the Bureau, said
the "Sunrise to Sunset" pro-
motion has a lot of potential.
For example, the itineraries
could be used by private indi-
viduals planning to explore
Central Florida, she said.
"Hopefully this will show
some fruition in the future,"
Ms. Lucania said.
Recently, the budget for the
Daytona Beach Area Conven-
tion and Visitors Bureau was
reduced from $7.2 million to
$5.3 million because of
declining revenue from
tourism. The Bureau
depends on funding from a
"bed tax" on the hotels.

I chose the hospital ranked #1 for orthopedic outcomes.
Dr. Stan Beitscher underwent a partial knee replacement at Halifax Health in 2008. In order to provide patients
with the very best care, we made sure to bring in the most accomplished orthopedic surgeons. We put the most
sophisticated technology in their hands, and developed the safest, cleanest operating rooms. The result is an
artificial implant that is more precise. Ajoint repair that comes with less pain. A hip fracture with a shorter
recovery, and everything else that goes hand in hand with ranking #1 in the state for orthopedic outcomes.
People travel hundreds of miles for care like this. But with Halifax Health right here, you don't have to.
