(^ HOW WEIRD

Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to be
true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because it's
online doesn't mean it's true!

The world's most expen-

According to Andrew

Melbourne farm's turkeys are

MELBOURNE The 2-year-old, 30-
pound turkey strutted away from about
29 of his fellow birds and, with a nod of
his big, colorful head, introduced him-
self to visitors at Kingery Farms.

the bird, which made farmer Greg

who was the keynote

"But we have one
great idea: to make the
United States of Ameri-

phy, a retired Army

years in the Army
Reserve and the Nation-
al Guard.
His military experi-
ence includes two tours
of duty in Afghanistan,
where part of his job
was to hunt for Osama
bin Laden.
"Our veterans have
protected and continue
to protect our way of
life," Mr. Murphy said
to a large audience at
BCC's Simpkins Fine
Arts Center.
He said our military
members "leave the
comfort of home to do
the work of patriots.
"Today, we want to
give a clear message to
our veterans: thank you
for your courage and
your sacrifice, and
thank you for standing

Mr. Murphy said.

Governor promotes manatee awareness

By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com
Each year, Brevard Coun-
ty's waters are home to
more than 1,000 manatees.
Some visit in summer,
some in winter and others
remain here year-round.
And despite the efforts of
environmental advocates
to ensure the safety of these
mammals, dozens are killed
each year, often as a result
of human activity.
In an effort to raise
awareness of this growing
problem, Florida Gov.
Charlie Crist followed in the
footsteps of leaders before
him and issued a proclama-

tion this year, recognizing
November 2009 as Manatee
Awareness Month.
"This is a tradition sup-
ported by Florida's gover-
nors for many years," said
Patrick Rose, executive
director of the Save the
Manatee Club. "The procla-
mation states that mana-
tees face the risk of extinc-
tion due to human-related
threats. Gov. Crist is bring-
ing some much-needed
attention to this cause,
especially at a time when
it's critically needed."
Currently, manatees,
which are known as Flori-
da's official marine mam-
mal, are listed as endan-
gered at the state, federal

and international levels.
And despite recent gains
in manatee protection
measures, this year is prov-
ing to be one of the worst
for manatees at the state
level, said Mr. Rose, who is
also an aquatic biologist.
Already this year, more
than 374 of the estimated
3,800 manatees in Florida
have died from various
causes. Historically, colli-
sions with watercraft repre-
sent nearly 34 percent of all
manatee deaths where a
cause of death could not be
determined.
"We must expand our
efforts to raise public
awareness about the pres-
ence of manatees in our

waters and educate more
people on how to prevent
these deaths," Mr. Rose
said.
While the statewide sta-
tistics in manatee deaths
related to humans seems to
be increasing, it is not the
case in Brevard County.
Of the 98 manatee fatali-
ties in Brevard this year, six
were a result of watercrafts,
two were from navigational
locks and two were a result
of human activity other
than watercrafts, Mr. Rose
said.
"This is good news for Bre-
vard County; more people
are obeying posted speed

TRAVEL

Try an informative

vacation this year

Take a step back in time.
Think back to when
you were young and in
school. Along with your
teacher and classmates, you
may have taken a field trip to
a local museum, historical
site or even the zoo.
Do you remember? It may
have been a visit to some-
thing set in colonial times
and you are learning how
people lived back in those
days. The fact that you got to
see it and feel it, made the
entire experience memo-
rable.
These days, there are quite
a few options for you to
experience those same
feelings.
Many deluxe cruise lines,
such as Crystal, SilverSeas
and Regent Seven Seas,
Seabourne and Oceania,
have enrichment programs
on board on all of the
various itineraries offered.
The topics depend upon
the itinerary. For example,
an Alaska cruise may have a
naturalist or Alaska special-

ist on board to speak on
their specialties.
On a recent transatlantic
cruise aboard the Queen
Mary II, James Taylor
performed in concert.
Additionally, there were
lectures by a renowned
author and scientist.
Somimtimes there are
artists, musicians, chefs,
sommeliers, photographers,
Egyptologists, academics,
historians and expedition
leaders, in addition to local
experts of the areas visited
while in port.
You may participate in any
of the adventures offered or
just listen to what the
speakers have to say on the
various subjects. They even
have technology specialists
on board that can teach you
new computer programs or
even how to best use your
new iPhone (according to
the cruise line, these are very
popular). Even mass-market
cruise lines offer some
lectures or classes on board.
Specialty tours are
another option for learning
vacations. You maybe
interested in taking a
gourmet and wine tour in
Tuscany, or the more

A large portion, about 44,
of manatee deaths this year
in Brevard occurred around
the time of birth.
This high number could
be a result of a variety of
situations, Mr. Rose said.
There could be a large
number of reproducing
females in a population;
the females may be more
stressed and unable to care
for their young or the
deaths could be a result of
nonlethal injuries to the
mother.
Another portion of the
county's manatee fatalities
were as a result of cold
spells and the loss of warm-
water winter habitats, such
as natural springs and the
outfalls from local power
plants.

includes people of various
faiths who are committed to
social justice, peace and
humanitarian service. Its
work is based on the belief
in the worth of every person
and faith in the power of
love to overcome violence
and injustice.
The committee, a Nobel
Peace Prize recipient, first
created "Eyes Wide Open:
The Human Cost of War" to
illustrate the lives lost in the
war in Iraq. It opened in Jan-
uary 2004 in Chicago's Fed-

water temperatures below
68 degrees Fahrenheit, Mr.
Rose said.
Throughout November,
the signed proclamation
keeps manatees in the
spotlight and highlights the
threats to their long-term
survival.
Year-round, the Save the
Manatee Club, which has
more than 40,000 members
worldwide, promotes pub-
lic awareness and educa-
tion about manatees, as
well as other fish and
wildlife.
The Maitland-based club
offers an Adopt-A-Manatee

tects injured manatees and
is involved with land acqui-

The club also provides

That was the last time the
entire death toll was repre-
sented in one location, Ms.
Impoco said.
"It became so large it
became impractical to tour
with them," she said.
Since then, the exhibition
has been divided into state
displays and traveled
throughout the nation to
smaller cities and towns. All
the state exhibits combined
now include more than 5,271
pairs of boots representing
U.S. military casualties in
both the Iraq and Afghanistan
wars. The Florida display has
traveled to cities such as Boca
Raton, Fort Myers and Tampa,
and represents those who
were born in Florida and

special request of families

The boots are tagged with
Florida soldiers' names, ranks,
ages and hometowns.
"Eyes Wide Open" will also
include a separate exhibit that
speaks to the losses of the
Iraqi people, Ms. Impoco said.
More than 250 pairs of civilian
shoes mostly children's- will
be on display to illustrate Iraqi
civilian casualties, estimated
at up to 1 million people.
These shoes will also be
tagged with victims' names
and ages.
Ms. Impoco said this is a
"living" memorial, in which
many people are inspired to
leave small trinkets, notes,
photos, newspaper articles

and even poems behind. Ms.
Impoco laminates those
items and attaches them to
some of the pairs of boots.
Also, Ms. Impoco asks
attendees to bring donations

A fake reality

We're living a life like Alice and Wonderland. Jimmy
Carter criticizes Israel and blames America. Al Gore
proposes the biggest hoax that man is responsible for -
global warming and not just the usual cyclical changes
the earth has experienced for thousands of years and
blames America, while beating out a Catholic, Polish
woman patriot who risked her life daily to cave thousands
of Jewish children from Nazi death camps.
And now Barack Obama, who criticizes Israel for its
developments in defending itself, yet refuses to stop Iran's
nuclear bomb manufacturing. Iran, a country that vows
to wipe Israel off the map and denies the holocaust, and
of course, Obama blames America Nobel Peace Prize
winner's all.
The mad hatter would warn us, America wake up.

Whatever Happened to Fun

I've reached my saturation point when it comes to truth
in advertising.
The other day I bought a very small candy bar that was
marketed as "fun size." It wasn't fun, it was small. I
followed that up with an 11 ounce bottle of water whose
label said "a blast of fun." That wasn't fun either. I'm
bombarded by media telling me that "we need to move
forward and change America." I don't think so. I remem-
ber when America was "fun."
Now we have various legislation all approved for
proposed good reasons that have degenerated into a
morass of lawyers, consultants and bureaucrats enforcing
the opposite of what was promised.
We have learned that a bureaucracy must either grow or
die; and that a bureaucracy never dies.
Unfortunately, as the abuses that a law was designed to
fight are eliminated, the enforcement apparatus does not
shrink to match. Instead, it expands and finds new abuses
and when those run out, it starts inventing them.
As an example the Environmental Protection Agency
has long abandoned its mandate and now focuses on
regulating shower heads and toilets, while holding up
vital public works for years over minor threats to alleged
endangered species.
And let's not forget Obama and the "fun" he's working on
for America. Why, in a couple of years we'll be grinning
like some demented, drooling fool. You know, like Pelosi.

Dress code violations

This is in regard to the dress code at the local high
schools.
In order to adequately enforce the dress code, adults
must look at female girls in certain places to determine
strap width and appropriate undergarments and appro-
priate clothing worn below the waist.
If adult males are checking and speaking to female
teenagers about these matters, they will have to be
looking at places where and discussing matters which, in
the workplace, would be considered sexual harassment.
I'm surprised that they have the money and the time to
spend so much of their efforts at the high schools deter-
mining dress code violations when they seem to be short
on cash for teachers and such and administrators are still
driving around on golf carts, and their sole purpose at
that time is to check for dress code and usually it is just
girls.
I am completely disturbed that males are discussing
these matters with female teenagers. I called the cus-
tomer service line and was told, "Well, they're teachers."
Well, they are teachers, but they are men.
And men should not be discussing my daughter's
personal wardrobe with her. Particularly, since most of
the dress codes revolves around her chest and her but-
tocks.

Letters

Stop bashing Dems

To the editor:
What I would like to know is why does the Hometown
News continue to print letters from Barbara Bronsburg?
Not only does she send them to your paper, but she also
sends the to Florida Today.
I believe in freedom of speech, but she is such a one-
sided Republican, they never do anything wrong. Believe
me, lady, they're not perfect.
There's one thing I would like to ask her. Why does she
have so much hatred for the Democrats and for President
Barack Obama? He didn't get us in this mess we are in, he's
only been in office for one year and he's doing everything
he can.
Another thing, Americans are not only Republicans and
Republicans are not only Christian. Are you ready to
scream because you said you would if someone mentioned
one more time the President George Bush put us in the
hole were in, well he did. I'll let you in on a secret. I'm a
regenerated Republican, always have been, but it's people
like you with hatred in your heart that turns me off.
Life is too short and remember that President Obama is
in office for the next three years and I'm sure he'll be re-
elected in 2012.

America is being stolen

To the editor:
There are two extremely important events that old
disposables like you and I will remember.
About 50 years or so ago Nikita Kruschev, then, I believe,
prime minister of Russia, uttered a famous prediction
regarding the future of the U.S. He said, "We will destroy
you from within." Remember these words, they are coming
true now.
Editor's note: The 1956 quote most widely art, iiitrd to
Nikita Kruschev was "We will bury you!"
At a later date, Mr. Kruschev was reported to have said: "I
once said 'We will bury you,'and Igot into trouble with it.
Of course we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own
working class will bury you."
Also many years ago Congress tried to shove down our
throats a "catastrophic act" which the traitorous AARP
immediately supported. They appear to be a "rubber
stamp" for Congress.
Fortunately, the not-so-stupid People of America rose en
masse and made our voices heard. The phony AARP had to
withdraw its support and Congress backed down and
withdrew the bill. The same situation exists today with
another dangerous, stupidly expensive bill which once
more, AARP rubber-stamps. Who? Not the members of
AARP. Were questionnaires sent out to all millions of AARP
members asking their opinion? No! The AARP directorate
stated their position to support this horrendous bill
without foreknowledge of AARP members.
In what way do the ruling members of this elite board
prosper? Interesting.
Fellow Americans, please continue to keep your eyes and
your ears open. The opposition is tricky. They are trying to
steal America from us.

Citizen or criminal?

To the editor:
I should be crying, but I'm laughing hysterically about
our medical situation. Criminals get immediate, top-notch
response, care and coverage so they can go on to an even
more expensive legal process to conviction. They even get
paid while behind bars.
The rest of us poor slobs have to fight bloody battles with
our insurance companies in the trenches to get simple, but
necessary, things paid for. All this comes on top of ever-
escalating premiums and exclusions.
Maybe I passed up the good life when I decided not to be
a criminal.

Horse rescue seeks awareness, donations

In recent months, horse owners everywhere are finding it
difficult to feed their animals when there isn't enough
money to feed the family. We daily received calls hearing
the same statements, I lost my job, I can barely afford to
feed my family, I can't feed the horses, our home is in
foreclosure. The unemployment rate continues to climb in
Florida reaching an all time high and foreclosure reaching
1 in every 135 homes.
To cope, many owners are being forced to give away their
horses. Some have been abandoned in vacant lots, 15 were
found on State property in Martin County, one on fore-
closed property in Malabar, two abandon in a field in
Mims the owner have moved out of the state. There are
many more stories like this of abandonment. With the high
number of horses being surrendered to rescues many are
over flowing. Because of the bad state of the economy
adoptions are at a slow rate making the staying time of
each horse longer than in the past. Increasing horse
surrenders, less adoptions, longer staying time all are
putting an increase strain on our budget.
Depending on the level of severity of the situation we
may supple the owner of a horse in need with feed for a
limited time, to help care for the horse until the situation
improves. In situations that there is no foreseen improve-
ment or it is classified as a neglect, abuse or abandonment
case we immediately remove the horse from the situation.
We need the help of caring people to continue our
mission to help these horses in need. Many horses we care
for are near death some three to four hundred pounds
under weight. It takes months of care to restore them back
to health.
H.O.R.S.E. Inc. is a nonprofit horse rescue. Your dona-
tions make it possible to vet, feed and care for the silent
victims of these bad economic times.
No donation is too small and you can use the Paypal link
on our website www.horseincorp.org, send your donation
to our mailing address; H.O.R.S.E. Inc. 5236 International

who is home-schooled.
Ben raised the turkeys in an
incubator, which he learned
how to use by reading books
and gathering tips from the
Internet. The money he
earned from selling last year's
turkeys is used to pay for food
for this year's birds.
The turkeys are fed all-nat-
ural grain, and they also enjoy
eating pasture grass and
clover.
"These are the turkeys your
great-grandmother would
have eaten," Mr. Kingery said.
"They're fed a better grain and
their nutritional value is bet-
ter than store-bought
turkeys."
The ability to roam helps
keep the farm's turkeys
healthy, and they never need
medications, Mr. Kingery
said. He said they are more

flavorful and have larger legs
and smaller breasts per
pound than store-bought
ones.
The turkeys from Kingery
Farms are ready to be
butchered in a Palm Bay pro-
cessing facility in about six to
seven months, whereas those
from some large, commercial
agriculture operations are
ready in about three to four
months, he said.
"It costs us more to raise
them, and they don't grow as
fast," Mr. Kingery said of the
farm's turkeys.
The turkeys available for
sale range in size from about
10 to 17 pounds. They cost $4
per pound, while many store-
bought turkeys sell for about
$1 per pound, Mr. Kingery
said.
The turkeys from Kingery
Farms are sold on a first-
come, first-served basis, and
10 of them already have been
purchased.

The birds are brought to the
processing facility three or
four days before they are
ready to be picked up by cus-
tomers at the farm.

celebration
By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com
The holiday season is
now upon us, and the city
of Cocoa is celebrating in
style.
More than 4,000 guests
of all ages are expected to
attend the city's 16th
annual Christmas Tree
Lighting & Space Coast
Boat Parade Nov. 27 in
Historic CocoaVillage.
The free event will
feature kids' activities and
games, food and business
vendors, ice-skating, as
well as a holiday concert
by the Community Band of
Brevard and caroling by
the Brevard Theatrical
Ensemble.
There will also be a
window-display contest
for Cocoa Village business-
es and an outdoor showing
of the movie "Elf," starring
Will Ferrell.
Equipped with holiday
magic dust, Santa Claus
will make a special
appearance via vintage fire
engine at 6:15 p.m. to help
light the city's 20-foot
Christmas tree, said
Samantha Senger, leisure
services manager for the
city of Cocoa.
"This is our way of
kicking off the holiday
season," she said. "It's a
very family-friendly event,
and it's right after Thanks-
giving, so people are eager

to come out, do some
shopping and get into the
holiday spirit."
Beginning at 6 p.m.,
guests are invited to gather
around Riverfront Park for
a magical boat parade,
which will travel around
the Whitley Bay area.
Prizes will be given to
those with the best holiday
decorations.
This year, the Indian
River Queen, a commer-
cial triple-deck paddle-
wheel boat, will once again
serve as the grand marshal
for the parade as the first
boat in line, said Penny
Flaherty, wedding and

event planner for the
Indian River Queen.
"The city of Cocoa has
really been working hard
over the years to bring the
spirit of the holidays to its
downtown waterfront
area," Ms. Flaherty said.
"We invite all boat owners
to participate in the
parade. The magic of this
lighted parade will dazzle
the thousands of viewers
gathered on the shoreline
at Riverside Park, who
anticipate a great show."
Those who do not own a
boat, but who are interest-
ed in riding along in the
parade, are invited to

climb aboard one of Island
Boat Lines 43-passenger
tour boats, which will pick
up passengers in Cocoa
Village at 5 p.m. Space is
limited, so reservations are
recommended.

Those seeking a taste of
the exotic can explore
another culture while help-
ing a worthwhile charitable
organization at Taste of
India 2009.
Sponsored by the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Central Flori-
da, the event will highlight
Indian culture, said Tina
Ashe, director of marketing
and communications.
Founded by Dr. Silas
Charles in 1984, Taste of
India has raised more than
$800,000 to support many
charitable organizations,
such as Crosswinds Youth
Services, American Cancer
Society, Habitat for Human-
ity of Brevard and to aid in
many disaster recovery
efforts, both locally and
overseas.
"Improving on hope and
restoring lives is a concept I
faithfully live by in my work
and care of patients at the
Cancer Care Center of Bre-
vard," Dr. Charles said.
He sees that same con-
cept in the lives of club
members at Boys & Girls
Clubs in Brevard County
and believes that now, more
than ever, disadvantaged
youth need help and com-
passion to pursue a path of
success and individual well-
being.
The Taste of India 2009
committee organized this
year's event.

not a word in your vocabu-

life and you will win your
share. Do it every day and
you will continue to see victo-
ry and success coming to
you, my winner.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct. 22
Your spirit is stronger than
ever. You have a great and
open heart. Your life force is
wonderful. Your desires for a
greater and happier life pre-
vail. Why? It's because of your
wonderful spirit and trust in
the universal power. If we
could be more centered
within ourselves life would

be better for all of us. Thanks.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Be completely honest with
yourself about what you
want in life that makes you
happy. Answer this question.
Take action. Run the race,
come around the bend and
finish the race. You are a win-
ner. Yeah! You finished the
race. Put it in your heart,
open it up and go for it. Your
true destiny depends on it.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21

signs of bigger and better

bless you in the season to
come. Prepare for greater
blessings to come from fami-
ly, friends and associates who
honor you.
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
You have such a wonderful
life force and energy. You
have a free and open channel
between your mind, heart
and spirit. You have a
guardian angel watching over
you. When you have all these
divine blessings working over
you, you have the greatest
blessings the universe has to
offer. You are so deserving.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb.18
Your wisdom and experience
continues to move you
toward your dreams and
goals. You make decisions
based on feeling and
instincts. You tap into your
higher power. This gives you
an edge in making right deci-
sions. Keep it up. You now
have the winning edge in
your favor. Your gut always
knows the truth.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
Being completely honest
with yourself about the
things that make you happy
is the first step toward victory
over life. Do things that you
love first and then share
them with your family, chil-
dren and friends. Refuse to
do things that don't want to
do. Your heart is your greatest
gift. Follow your heart. It
speaks truth.
