COMEDY COMING
West Melbourne elects one
newcomer, two incumbents
By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
There's a new face on the
West Melbourne City
Council following the Nov.
3 municipal election.
Newcomer Andrea
Young edged out incum-
bent Mike Hazlett in a nar-
row race, garnering 950
votes, or 27 percent, versus
Mr. Hazlett's figures of 750
votes, or 23 percent.
Three seats were up for
re-election this voting sea-
son. In West Melbourne,
the seats go to the top
vote-getters, and are not
districted.
Incumbent John D'Ami-
co was the top vote-getter
of the four candidates, get-
ting 1,010 votes, or 29 per-
cent.
"That's twice in a row
now," he said, referring to
the 2007 election, in which
he was also the top vote-
getter. "My volunteers did
a great job, and I've very
happy with the outcome."
This will be Mr. D'Ami-
co's second full term on
the council. He was origi-
nally appointed as a coun-
cil member in 2006, when
former Councilman Shak
Hill resigned to take a job
out of state. Mr. D'Amico
said he's eager to get to
work on this term, and
prom-
ised to fulfill goals outlined
in his campaign.

North Star Program
helps children grieve
By Jenet Krol
Krol@hometownnewsol.com
For many grieving children, the
feeling of isolation is one of the
hardest things to cope with.
After her mother died, 16-year-
old Anna Phillips said she felt no
one could understand her feel-
ings.
"I felt like I was alone and that
other people couldn't know what I
was going through," said Anna.
But, through the North Star Pro-
gram, she found others her age
who were going through the same
thing.
The child-grief support pro-
gram, which is operated by Hos-
pice of St. Francis in Titusville,
provides a friendly, healing place
where children who have suffered
the death of a parent or loved one
can come together.
"We provide support," said
Brooke Davis, North Star coordi-
nator. "Children really are the for-
gotten grievers. When they come
here they know they are not alone.
Everyone here has commonality

Dr. Mitchell Greenberg, president of Injury Treatment Solutions in Mel-
bourne, speaks to students at Viera High School about the nonprofit
organization he founded called 'Hang Up 'N Drive.' The organization
informs drivers, primarily teens, the dangers of using a cell phone while
driving.
New program warns
of driving distractions
By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com
A local teen is driving down the
road at 55 mph when she gets a call
on her cell phone.
Just looking down to see who the
caller was took four seconds.
In essence, she just drove the
length of a football field with her
eyes closed.
"Now, just think about how long
it takes a driver to send a text mes-
sage while behind the wheel," said
Dr. Mitchell Greenberg, who has
operated his own chiropractic
practice in Brevard County for
more than 20 years. "Today's dis-
tractions are worse than ever."
Within the past two years, Dr.
Greenberg began to notice a trend
with the patients he was seeing.
Of the 95 percent who were
involved in vehicle accidents, at
least half were a result of cell phone
use by either themselves or another
driver.
"Of the 10 new patients we'd see a
day, six of them fell in this catego-
ry," he said. "That's an avoidable
statistic; I just couldn't sit on this
information any longer."
So last April, Dr. Greenberg and a
team of local advocates began
developing a nonprofit organiza-
tion that would encourage drivers -
primarily teens to eliminate dis-
tractions while driving.
Its name, simply stated, is "Hang
Up 'N Drive."

Fill a shoebox, change someone's life
By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com
For the first 10 years of her
life, Livia Satterfield was
raised in a rundown orphan-
age in Galati, Romania.
Living alongside hundreds
of other children, she survived
on a limited amount of food,
bathed in dirty water and was
never shown any love or com-
passion from those around
her.
Then, one afternoon, a mis-
sion group arrived at the
orphanage and distributed
hundreds of holiday shoebox-
es to the children.
Inside, the boxes were filled
with things like toys, books,
crayons, games, soap, tooth-
brushes and stuffed animals.
Livia received many of
these items, as well as a pack
of hairclips, which she'd
always wanted, and a best
friends necklace that was sep-
arated in two pieces.
"It was such an amazing
feeling," Livia said. "It was the
first time we realized there
was someone out there who
truly loved us."
Filled with joy, Livia gave
the other half of her new
necklace to the woman- Con-
nie Satterfield who gave her
the shoebox, hugged her and
told her she loved her.
The two stayed in touch,
and less than two years later,
Mrs. Satterfield adopted Livia
and brought her back to the
U.S.
Today, Livia, 22, continues
to live with the Satterfields in
Sharpsburg, Ga., and is cur-
rently in her sophomore year
at Clayton State University,
studying public relations.
She also serves as a volun-
teer spokeswoman for "Oper-
ation Christmas Child," a
national program that pro-
vides items for children living
in underprivileged and pover-
ty-stricken conditions
throughout the world the
same program that provided
Livia with her shoebox as a
child.
"This is my chance to
impact the lives of other chil-
dren, the same way mine
was," she said. "We never cel-
ebrated birthdays and were
never given presents. That
shoebox was the one gift they
never took away from me."
Samaritan's Purse, an inter-
national Christian relief
organization, facilitates the
project each year through its
many branches across the
globe.
Since 1993, more than 60
million shoeboxes have been
distributed to children in
more than 130 different coun-
tries, according to
www.samaritanspurse.org.
In Brevard County, the pro-
gram comes alive with the
help of more than 200 volun-
teers and 75 local churches of
all denominations.
Operation Christmas Child
encourages people to take a
regular-sized or 6-quart plas-
tic shoebox, decorate it how-
ever they choose, and fill it
with items for an underprivi-
leged child.
Suggested items include
toiletries, toys, clothing,
school supplies, stuffed ani-
mals, shoes, towels and
books. In the past, partici-
pants have also added pho-
tos of themselves and letters
to the child, many of whom
have written in return.
"This is a project that fam-
ilies, couples, businesses
and organizations can do
together," said Charlene
Tarver, collection site coor-
dinator for the Brevard
branch of Samaritan's Purse.
"Many of these children
have never received a gift in
their lives."
The only items that will
not be accepted are liquids,
soft candy, chocolate, war
toys or glass, Ms. Tarver said.
The shoeboxes, which can
also be picked up at the
Operation Christmas Child
collection center, should be
labeled for a boy or girl and
categorized by age group 2-
4, 5-9 and 10-14.
In addition to the collec-
tion center at First Baptist
Church of Merritt Island,
shoeboxes will be collected
at seven other sites through-
out the county Nov. 16-23.
While it is not mandatory,
the organization encour-
ages everyone who fills a
box to also include $7 to
help with shipping costs.
Participants can also choose
Andy Stefanek/staff photographer
Livia Satterfield shows students from Merritt Island Christ-
ian School a shoebox just like the one she received years
ago at an orphanage in Romania.
to donate money to the
organization for shipping,
rather than filling a shoe-
box.
If wrapping paper is used,
the organization prefers that
both the box and lid be
wrapped separately because
each shoebox must be
examined before being sent
out, Ms. Tarver said.
Inside each box, volun-
teers will also add a booklet
titled "The Greatest Gift of
All," written in the child's
own language.
"We do our best to get the
boxes in the children's
hands as close to Christmas
as possible," Ms. Tarver said.
"But that isn't always possi-
ble. Many of the boxes have
to travel a long way."
This year, all of the shoe-
boxes collected in Florida
will be distributed to chil-
dren in India.
In 2008, Operation Christ-
mas Child collected more
than 7.9 million shoeboxes
worldwide. More than
13,600 were collected in Bre-
vard County alone.
In 2005, Ms. Tarver experi-
enced what it was like to
hand-deliver these gifts
when she joined 100 other
volunteers during a Samari-
tan's Purse mission to
Ecuador.
"It was then that I was
able to fully realize the
power a small shoebox can
have in the eyes of these
children," she said. "It was
an amazing experience."

Suspicious economics
How convenient and suspicious is it that when the govern-
ment announces no cost of living adjustment for Social Securi-
ty recipients that prices on fuel suddenly start to skyrocket
again. And when that happens, it causes everything else to go
up, like food and clothing. Is Congressman Grayson right
when he says Republicans want people who depend on gov-
ernment programs like Medicare and Social Security to die
quickly? Sure looks that way. When more people die there will
be less Social Security benefits that need to be paid. And if a
system is supposedly going to be broke soon, the way to reverse
the deficit is to have fewer people alive to get benefits. The
Republican logic is this. The faster older and disabled people
die we can save Social Security for the future and especially for
the wealthy.
Cure for fear of dogs discovered
Rejoice, for now we know that if you are afraid of dogs, even a
35 lb. freckled face dog, fear no more.
Here is what you do: Stub a cigarette out in the dog's face. I
want to thank the special lady who showed me the technique
last evening in Ryckman Park.
I didn't understand she was exacting the cure for her fear of
dogs. So ignorant me, contacted the near police. They
explained it to me, however. I almost received a ticket for cut-
ting through the park with a dog.
I hope citizens of Melbourne Beach will forgive me. I know I
should be horse whipped.
What can we do for the woman who discovered the cure?
After three to four days, it dawned on me this woman could
be in the early stages ofAlzheimers. So to her family, watch your
children around her. Unless this woman had depicted this type
of behavior in the past.
It's your responsibility to watch out for your neighbors.
Letters
David Letterman, please apologize already
To the editor.
I'm tired of waiting for the apology from David Letterman to
Sarah Palin and her family. Where is it? He acted so lilywhite and
pure when he tried to shame her and her family with lies, when all
the while he was having affairs with any number ofwomen.
We have all heard of the "directors couch," so it might cause one
to wonder if all the affairs were consensual, or jobs were on the line.
I would like to see him publicly apologize. It seemed so easy for
him to publicly smear her and family. It's time to hear the apology,
and then to resign his job or get fired.
We know the smear of Sarah Palin was strictly political, so we cer-
tainly know where David Letterman sits in the political scene. He
sides with the Democrats who want to screw America down the
tubes and into a third world country. Is he for the Americawe love or
for all the "changes?"

The high cost of ignoring God
To the editor.
Nobody likes to be ignored. Unfortunately we have all been dis-
regarded at some point, and ifwe are honest, we will admit to over-
looking others at times. As bad as that is, it's even worse to ignore
God.
Many kings in the history of Israel fell victim of ignoring God,
including the son of the great King, Solomon. Pride and passion for
foreign wives would ultimately result in his turning from God and
costing him his kingdom.
Do we see similar trends from our leaders inAmerica today?
Why should anyone want to pay the high price of ignoring a
heavenly father? He's all-wise. He's almighty. He controls our des-
tiny. With him we have calmness in conflict, gladness in gloom,
strength in struggles, triumphs in temptation and wisdom in work.
As much as he loves us and wants the best for us, he still gives us a
choice whether to him or ignore him. We can worship the gods we
made or the God who made us. Which will it be? Our answer will
determine where we will spend eternity.
No one can avoid the high cost of ignoring God, no individual, no
family no nation.

What you need to know about HIN1
here have been many
misconceptions
regarding the H1N 1
virus and vaccine and this
article is an effort to
provide a concise flu
avoidance and flu manage-
ment roadmap.
The 2009 H1N1 flu virus
(formerly known as swine
flu) was declared a pan-
demic earlier this year with
widespread activity here in
Florida. The most signifi-
cant difference between
the H1N1 and the seasonal
flu viruses is that H1N1 has
a higher incidence in the
younger population and
pregnant women.
The virus presents with
symptoms including
fatigue, fever, sore throat,
runny or stuffy nose,
cough, and body aches.
Sometimes it may present
with vomiting and diar-
rhea, as well. The severity
of the illness has a wide
range from mild flu-like
symptoms that can be self-
limiting and treated with
supportive care to severe
respiratory symptoms
requiring hospitalizations.
It is spread through
person-to-person contact
by respiratory droplets and
can stay alive on inanimate
objects up to eight hours.
The H1N1 virus has an
incubation period of seven
days.
The H1N1 flu vaccine is
the best weapon against the
flu. It is currently available
and distribution efforts are
under way. It is manufac-
tured the same way as the
seasonal vaccine under the
Food and Drug Administra-
tion's rigorous oversight and
approval procedures. In
fact, had the World Health
Organization predicted the
H1N1 was going to be a
pandemic this year; it would
have been included in the
production of the seasonal
flu vaccine this year.
There are certain target
groups who should receive
the H1N1 Flu vaccine:
Pregnant women
Health care workers and
emergency medical respon-
ders
People who live with or
care for infants less than 6
months of age
Children and adults
from 6 months to 24 years
People age 25-64 years of
age with underlying medical
conditions
To help prevent the
spread and reduce your risk
of contracting H 1N 1:
Get the vaccine if you
meet the above criteria
Cover your nose and
mouth with a tissue when
coughing or sneezing then
discard the tissue immedi-
ately and encourage others
to act similarly
Frequent hand-washing
with soap and water for 20
seconds or the use of
alcohol-based hand
sanitizers is also effective
Avoid touching your
eyes, nose and mouth to
avoid spreading germs
If flu symptoms do take
hold, contact your physician
for guidance. Once diag-
nosed, those who become
infected must remain home
from work or school for at
least one week from when
symptoms began to help
prevent the spread of the flu.
It is imperative to drink
plenty of fluids and get
adequate rest.
There are antiviral
medications that can
help lessen the severity
and duration of the
H1N1 virus if started
within 48 hours of the
start of symptoms.
These require a prescrip-
tion from your health-
care provider if deemed
necessary. Most people
do not need the antiviral
medication to fully
recover from the flu.
Remember to be
proactive as we all
weather this flu season.

Disease Control at

Tips for healthy holiday eating habits
The holidays are
almost upon us
again and nothing
says holidays like food.
Halloween candy seems
to kick off the season, and
many of our memories of
Thanksgiving through the
New Year center on
favorite dishes, wonderful
aromas and family get-
togethers.
Even the workplace can
be a dessert "minefield."
All that good eating can
wreak havoc with your
diet and nutrition, but
there are several things
you can do to enjoy the
holidays and have good
food without a bad case of
the guiltss" afterwards.
For Tara Gidus, team
dietitian for the Orlando
Magic, the important
thing is to have a plan,
both for the season, and
for handling specific
situations.
While it may not be a
good time to start a diet or
diet rigorously, showing
some discipline without
completely depriving
yourself is a good way to
start the New Year on a
positive note, especially if
losing weight is on your to
do list.
Working in an office can
be rough on your diet.
Everyone seems to bake
and bring in goodies. A
good idea is to decide in
advance what you're going
to do and stick with the
plan.
"Choose carefully," Ms.
Gidus says. "Don't just
have one of everything
that comes in. If you know
there will be treats, eat a
small breakfast and have a
small treat. Portion
control is always key. Take
one piece and sit down
and eat it instead of
standing around and
continually snacking. Take
very small bites, to make it
last longer, or only have a
few bites and quietly
dispose of it. If you don't
want to say no, you still
don't have to eat it all."
Gifts of food can be a
problem, but you needn't
keep tempting food in the
house. If you're the host or
hostess, send people
home with lots of doggy
bags. Spread the calories
around.
Parties can be another
pitfall. The two important
rules, Ms. Gidus says, are
never to go to a party
hungry and always have a
plan.
"Don't go to parties
starving," she says. "Eat
protein snacks, such as
cottage cheese or low-fat
cheese, chicken, turkey,
milk or yogurt, before you
go. Protein is filling and
may help you from
overeating once you get
there.
"Look at all the food
before you start to load
your plate," she says. "You
don't want to have a full
plate and realize that your
favorite food is at the end
of the line.
"Try to fill half your
plate with vegetables,
either raw, cooked or in a
salad. Take small portions
of the rest of the food.
When it comes time for
dessert, look again at all of
the offerings. Share a
piece with a friend; it will
decrease portion size for
both of you."
The dietician also
suggests sticking to
vegetable hors d'oeuvres,
shrimp cocktail, pretzels
and nuts, and to avoid or
limit fried foods and
mayonnaise- and sour
cream-based dishes.
If you're going to have
alcohol, Ms. Gidus advises
that you choose light beer
or wine spritzers. A sugary
drink or eggnog with
brandy can add 400 to 500
calories. Choose a diet soft
drink or seltzer with a
twist of lemon or lime or
tomato juice without the
alcohol.
Just because it's holiday
time is no reason to stop
exercising. Not only will
you burn calories, you'll
lessen the stress and
overeating that holidays
often bring. You'll also feel
a little more in control of
things when you stick to a
routine. If you're unusual-
ly pressed for time, as we
often are during the
holidays, break up your
exercising into smaller 10-
minute segments, and add
walking by parking far
from the store and using
stairs instead of elevators.
"Move more," Ms. Gidus
suggests. "Try to start a
new tradition of going for
walks or playing active
games with the family. Do
an extra 15 minutes of
exercise to make up for
the extra calories."
Finally, remember that
the holidays are about
family and friends, not
food. Focus on the social-
izing and not the eating.
Be kind to yourself, too.
Don't beat yourself up if
you over-indulge; just try
to get back on track.

Since the organization
was founded, Dr. Green-
berg and his team have
gained approval from Bre-
vard Public Schools to
present the program to
high schools throughout
the county.
The format varies with
each school and is present-
ed to driver's education
students, select classes or
entire student populations.
"Any way that we can get
the information out, we'll
do it," said Lucy Hixen-
baugh, the organization's
media relations coordina-
tor, who has worked at Dr.
Greenberg's practice,
Injury Treatment Solutions,
for the past two years. "Our
mission is to lower that dis-
traction of cell phone use
and promote better driving
safety habits."
During each presenta-
tion, Dr. Greenberg, who is
father to an 18- and 21-
year-old, relays statistics
for students, while also
providing them with a
chance to participate in
program.
Students are given signs
that say, "Hang Up 'N
Drive," and are encouraged
to hold them up to fellow
drivers, who are distracted
while talking or texting on a
cell phone.
They are also provided
with a report card to record
their parents' behavior
when it comes to using a
cell phone behind the
wheel.
"They put a checkmark
and the date for every time
they catch their parents in
the act," Dr. Greenberg
said. "If they catch them 20
times, they can bring in
their report cards to me
and get a free T-shirt. When
kids are telling their par-
ents to stop, they're more
likely to avoid these dis-
tractions themselves."
Dr. Greenberg will also
be promoting an essay
contest for middle school
students to discuss their
thoughts on the issue, as
well as a drawing contest
for elementary students to
create the organization's
new logo.
He also plans to chal-
lenge high school students
to create 30-second videos
that highlight the "Hang Up
'N Drive" concept.
"We will air the winning
video on a TV commercial,"
he said.
In addition, the organi-
zation is in the process of
developing a scholarship
fund for local students who
meet the requirements of
promoting better driving
safety habits associated
with cell phone use while
driving.
In the future, Dr. Green-
berg hopes to earn busi-
ness and corporate spon-
sorships, so that the
organization can give back
to the community by pro-
viding grants for families
that have lost a family
member as a result of cell
phone use behind the
wheel.
"People ask me if I'm
doing this to change the
law," Dr. Greenberg said.
"Well, yes, that will eventu-
ally be part of what we're
doing. But even if the law is
passed, it doesn't mean
people are going to stop.
Our ultimate goal is to get
people to understand the
dangers and get them off
their cell phones while
driving."

Get service at A-1 Tractor & Mower

Need help repairing or

power products? A-1 Tractor
& Mower in Melbourne has
you covered.
The family-owned busi-
ness has been operating
successfully in Melbourne
for 28 years, specializing in
specific brands, said Lori
Starr, who co-owns the busi-
ness with her husband,
Michael.
"We sell and service out-
door power products, spe-
cializing only in Snapper,
Stihl, Ferris and Hustler
(brand tractors, mowers and
equipment)," she said.
The business was founded
by Ms. Starr's father,
William, in 1981, shortly
after he and his wife retired
to Florida.
"Mom and Dad just want-
ed something of their own
to do," Ms. Starr said.
But Mr. Blake's decision
to start a business resulted
in an unexpected benefit to
his daughter, when she met
Paul Lepinskie/staff photographer
Lori Starr, co-owner of A-1 Tractor and Mower of Mel-
bourne stands amongst some of the items available for
her future husband through
the store.
"I met Michael through
this business," Ms. Starr
said. "He was working as a
distributor for some of the
parts we buy. He started
working for my Dad in
1983."
Mr. Blake retired in 2001,
and Mr. and Mrs. Starr took
over.
A-1 Tractor & Mower sells
all types of outdoor power
equipment, including self-
propelled and riding lawn
mowers, weed whackers
and leaf blowers. They also
stock all the accessories for
these machines, including
lubricant and Weed Whack-
er line.
"We know our product
and we do take care of the
product, repairing it here
rather than sending it out
(for repairs)," Ms. Starr said.
"If you have questions,
even as minor as how to
wire the line on your trim-
mer, we can help you with
that."
And, as an added bonus,
customers can stop by to
visit the store's four live-in
residents. Four stray cats,
who "adopted" the store,
reside there full-time. Say
hi to Foxy, Goldie, Misty
and Bit-Bit when you come
in for new equipment, parts
or service.
A-1 Tractor & Mower is at

you can be yourself," she
said.
Groups meet twice a week
and counselors use art,
painting, role-playing and
games to facilitate discus-
sion of grief experiences,
said Ms. Davis.
'A big goal of the program
is for (the children) to realize
that grief is a normal, natural
reaction after someone
dies," said Ms. Davis. 'And
that every individual has the
capacity to heal."
On meeting nights, chil-
dren eat dinner with their
families. Then children go to
their group and parents go to
their own bereavement
group.
The children and teen
groups talk for about an
hour, then do a creative proj-
ect to reflect on the person
who has died. Playtime fol-
lows, giving the children a
chance to relax and talk on
their own, said Ms. Davis.
Currently, 25 families in
Brevard County are enrolled
in the program.
Volunteers from Hospice
of St. Francis provide the
services for free to children
between ages 3 and 18,
along with their families.
Anne Foster has volun-
teered with the program
since its inception.
She realized there was a
need for such a program
while volunteering for the
school board as a school-bus

Volunteers are trained to
recognize grieving behaviors
in children so they can teach
the children what they are
feeling is normal.
'A lot of times people don't
think children are as obser-

are mourning and grieving,
too," said Ms. Foster.
Anna, who plans to volun-
teer with the group when she
gets older, said having such a
program in Brevard County
is essential.
"Without it, I'm not sure
how my life would be differ-
ent. It really helped change
my life for the better," she
said.
The North Star program
will offer a one-day camp for
any child between ages 6

during their time of grief.
Camp activities include
creative learning and thera-

campers to share memories

The camp ends with a

From ARorg: Woman calls
911 to report herself as
drunk driver
The call came into the 911
dispatcher: "I don't want to
hurt anybody. I'm drunk."
And with that, Mary Strey,
49, of Granton, reported
herself as a drunken driver
about 3 miles northeast of
Neilsville in centralWiscon-

Clark County Sheriff's
Chief Deputy Jim Backus
said Strey's call on Oct. 24
led deputies to cite her for
misdemeanor drunken
driving with a blood-alcohol
level double the legal limit
to drive.
In the 911 call, Strey said
she wanted to report a

dispatcher asked if she was
behind the suspect vehicle.
"I am them," Strey said.

Comedy show has family-friendly humor
By Jenet Krol
Krol@hometownnewsol.com
CAPE CANAVERAL -
Comedian Ted Holum
said he never expected
having a clean comedy
show would be a hook.
When he started as a
comedian 30 years ago,
dirty and vulgar comedy
shows were the novelties.
"I remember when there
were one or two guys that
would do a really vulgar
show, and that was their
draw, because not many
others were doing it," he
said.
Nowadays, it seems like
everyone has gotten into
the dirty humor act.
"I've been at comedy
clubs in Orlando and some
of the guys in front of me
had really vulgar topics.
Even the emcee would go
off on dirty topics. There is
a place for that, but it's not
for everyone and a lot of
people get turned off," said
Mr. Holum.
So, Mr. Holum, who is
now a resident of Merritt
Island, and his old friend,
ventriloquist Peter Hefty,
got together to create the
Laughing Tiki Road Show,
a "clean" comedy show
the whole family can
enjoy.
Their first show on Oct.
12, which was originally
meant to host 100,
attracted 240 audience
members.
"Everyone can relate,"
said Mr. Holum. "Adults
and children enjoy the
show, not just because it's
not dirty, but because it's

funny. There is a lot of
observation humor and
one-liners. I think we've
hit a real niche here."
Having worked on
cruise ships for more than
12 years, Mr. Holum had
plenty of experience with
family-friendly comedy.
He said he and Mr.
Hefty wanted to bring
their show to the Cape
Canaveral area because
there isn't much family-
friendly nightlife.
"Unless you want to go
to the port and drink or
hit the bar scene, there is
not much to the do with
the family," he said.
Mr. Hefty said their
show proves that even
older comics who have
been around for a while
still have something
funny to say.
He and his troupe of
ventriloquist dummies,
which includes Hoodoo
the mind-reader, Justin, a
dinosaur who used to
teach children how to
brush their teeth at a
dentist's office, 93-year-
old Percy, and old-timey
entertainer Mr. Mushi,
delight audiences with
their humor and tricks of
ventriloquism.
Mr. Hefty has been
performing as a ventrilo-
quist since he was 6, when
he got hooked on making
people laugh.
"I helped my uncle who
was a magician and was
always goofing up tricks. I
got more laughter and just
kept coming up with ways
to make people laugh," he
said.
Audiences can expect a
lot of variety and person-
alities with distinctive
voices during his act, said
Mr. Hefty.
And while the show is
suitable for children 13
and older, it's not just for
kids, said Mr. Holum.
"It's also for adults who
appreciate funny, clean
humor," he said.
The Laughing Tiki Road
Show is scheduled for 8
p.m., Nov. 14 at the

Astronaut Blvd., Cape

on peace, love, health, faith,
joy, creativity and freedom
and abundance will be
added, as well.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct. 22
Your load in life wants to
get lighter. It's up to you to
listen to your inner feelings
and say no when your
instincts tell you to. The
tide is flowing in your favor
now. Write down the
"aha's" you hear that bring
joy to your heart. Keep
them moving forward. You
don't have to be all things
to all people anymore. Be
good to you.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Keep a strong focus on your
goals right now. Enjoy your
time at the helm of the
zodiac. You always take
care of everyone else. It's
time to take care of your
self. Positive actions are
strong medicine and earn
respect, love and honor.
You can expect forward
movement, renewed joy
and abundance as your
rewards.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
You have grown so much
emotionally, spiritually and
universally this year. You
are calmer, more centered
and upbeat. You are a fire
sign. Your instincts rule
your head. Trust and use
them. They are the inner
light that guides you. Enrich
your personal life. An emo-
tionally stable Sag is a pow-
erful force in life.
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
You have accomplished a
lot this year. It's time to
prepare next year's list.
Your confidence level is
higher than ever because of
successes this year. Many of
the results are because of
your strong, healthy inter-
est in life. The passion in
your soul burns strong.
Seize and savor each
moment. Many more are
soon on the way.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
The artist living in your soul
demands more expression.
Just be sure to finish old
projects in proportion to
starting new ones. Maintain
balance in life. The deeper
secrets and mysteries of life
continue to emerge and be
made known to you. This
deep well is your reward.
This is the age of Aquarius,
you know.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
You are more highly

your words of wisdom.
Why? Because you help so
many find their way in life.
Your mission is to help and
serve. This is a treasure
above great riches and the
primary source of your hap-
piness.

Carnival's newest ship to arrive at Port Canaveral Nov. 18
Here comes another
boost to Brevard
County's tourism.
Carnival Cruise Lines
newest vessel the "Carnival
Dream" will arrive at Port
Canaveral in December.
The Carnival Dream will
make her official American
debut from New York with
two eight-day Florida and
Caribbean sailings with a
call at Port Canaveral.
When she arrives Nov. 18
for the day she will be wel-
comed with "Sail-A-Bration"
hosted by Canaveral Port
Authority.
In May, Port Canaveral
welcomed Royal Caribbean's
160,000-ton Freedom of the
Seas, among much hoopla
hosted by the Canaveral
Port Authority at Jetty Park.
It was a great day and all
'MEDLIN'S

were invited to wish an
excited bon voyage to the
ship as she set sail on her
first voyage from her new
homeport.
They expect the same wel-
come for the Carnival
Dream, although this time,
there will be a cruise give-a-
way, where one lucky win-
ner (and guest) will win a
cruise in a suite on a Carni-
val fantasy-class ship. It's
worth the trip out to Jetty
Park for the festivities.
Carnival's largest vessel
comes complete with
amenities galore including
an adults-only serenity area
that accommodates more
than 200 with chaise
lounges, sun loungers, ham-
mocks, two whirlpools over-
looking the sea and a full
bar. The large screen sea-

show.
Gathering Place is a two-
level casual eatery offering
breakfast, lunch and dinner,
with culinary choices that
include Italian, Tex-Mex and
Asian specialties. Also avail-
able is a pasta bar, 24-hour
pizzeria, burrito bar, New
York-style deli and a grille,
offering the usual American
fare of hot dogs and ham-
burgers.
Ocean Plaza is a spectacu-
lar indoor/outdoor cafk and
entertainment venue for
guests to either relax and
watch, have cappuccino and
lattes or dance and have
fun.
Carnival Dream offers a
more intimate dining expe-
rience at Chef's Art located
on deck 12. This 139-seat,
steakhouse-style restaurant
offers prime dry-aged
U.S.D.A. beef, lobster tail,
lamb chops and Chilean sea
bass on its delectable menu.
The Scarlet and Crimson
main dining rooms offer
many choices from appetiz-
ers, to salads, to main cours-
es and desserts each
evening.
The Dream has some
industry firsts, as well. One
of the more exciting for
cruisers are "fun hubs."
These are computer kiosks
located around the ship that
offer guests the ability to get
in touch with each other
while out and about.
A family member can
leave a message on another
member's profile to let them
know where they are and
where to meet. Also, one
might have an interest and
put it out there for others
who might have the same
interest to meet.
The kids' facility is the
largest at sea as is the Water-
Works aqua park that
includes the longest water-
slide. Not to mention the
more than 23,000- square-
foot Cloud 9 spa.
So much more, but so lit-
tle space to tell you about
this incredible ship.
Built in the Fincantieri's
shipyard in Italy, the 130,000
ton Dream set sail in mid-
September, then picked up
its first passengers for three,
12-day European sailings.
On Oct. 17, she set sail on
her transatlantic voyage to
New York, where she will
arrive to the fanfare and an
official naming ceremony
and christening. The Dream
will start her alternating
eastern and western itiner-
aries from her homeport on
Dec. 5.
The excitement builds for
all of us. Carnival Dream has
pricing starting as low as
$619 per person (plus taxes
and fees) for a seven-night
cruise.
See you all there at Jetty
Park at Port Canaveral on
Nov. 18 for the festivities.
Free parking in the after-
noon.
