In 2006, Ms. Hansen

"I really intended to go

Members of the board of

approached Ms. Hansen for
her help in establishing this

It must have been fate,

New county manager settles into job
By Tony Judnich
Judnich@hometownnewsol.com
VIERA New Brevard
County manager Howard
Tipton recently received
one of his first marching
orders from the County
Commission.
On Oct. 6, a majority of
the commission directed
Mr. Tipton to make the
appointment of a new Bre-
vard Animal Services and
Enforcement director one of
his top priorities. The Oct. 6
meeting was the first regular
commission meeting Mr.
Tipton attended since being
hired.

ty medical examiner's office.
The appointment of a
new director is strongly
backed by the county's Ani-
mal Welfare Working Group.
Among other goals, the
group strives to improve
conditions at the county
animal shelters in Mel-
bourne and Titusville.
The organization also
would like the new director
to eventually implement a
"no kill" policy at the shel-
ters. Its goal is that the only
animals that are euthanized
are those whose physical
condition humanely
requires it, according to
information from the group.
Four commissioners Oct.
6 approved prioritizing the
appointment of a new direc-
tor, whose job duties would
include overseeing the shel-
ters and who would under-
stand the philosophy of the
no-kill goal.
District 5 Commissioner
Andy Anderson cast the
lone "nay" vote. He said
while a new director is
needed, the county should
privatize the shelters.
"I'm very disappointed
that we still have not bidded
out those shelters," he said.
Mr. Tipton's contract as
the new county manager
took effect Sept. 28. The 51-

Write letters to save space
By Jenet Krol
Krol@hometownnewsol.com
It has been said nothing is
more powerful than the writ-
ten word.
Brevard County Commis-
sioners have embraced this
philosophy and are asking
residents to send written let-
ters to President Obama in
support of the space pro-
gram.
The letter-writing cam-
paign, called "Save Space,"
was the brainchild of Brevard
County Commissioner
Robin Fisher.
"We want to let Washing-
ton know how important
(the space program) is to our
community and the state of
Florida.The community
needs to scream about it."
Mr. Fisher said he thought
a letter-writing campaign
would be an effective way of
reminding President Obama
of the campaign promises he
made regarding preserving
the space program and limit-
ing the gap created when the
shuttle is retired.
"In my office, you can
send me an e-mail on a topic
and it will get looked at, but
it's not nearly (as) affective
(as if) someone takes the
time to send a letter.If I get a
lot of letters on the same
subject, I make sure I under-
stand the topic," said Mr.
Fisher.
To give residents a jump-
ing-off point for composing
their letters, the Brevard
County Commissioners have
launched the Web site,
http://savespace.us. The site
contains letter templates for
businesses, individuals and
students, as well as links to

"This will be Melbourne's
first attempt to participate in
the worldwide record, and in
doing this event, we also hope
to help our own community,"
said Florence Nunez, organiz-
er of the local attempt.
Ms. Nunes, a dedicated fan
dent Obama at the Titusville
town hall meeting held
August 2008.
"We need to remind him of
what he said and get some
political pressure to hold
him to his word. Florida was
good to him in the election
and we need to remind him
of how strong we are," said
Mr. Fisher.
The Web site also has a link
to the Review of U.S. Human
Space Flight Plans Commit-
tee's Summary Report, which
was presented to President
Obama Sept. 8, following a
budget review by a senate
committee chaired by Nor-
man Augustine, former
chairman and chief execu-
tive officer of Lockheed Mar-
tin.
Mr. Fisher said he hopes
Brevard County residents
and people from all over the
state will look at these docu-
ments and be inspired to
send the President a person-
alized letter.
He is also encouraging
businesses owners to send
their letters on a business let-
terhead.

tractor with NASA, everyone

Human Space Flight Review
Committee Summary
Formed with the purpose of finding options for keep-
ing the space program running, while staying within a
10-year, $80 billion budget, the Human Space Flight
Review Senate Committee presented President Obama
with suggestions Sept. 8. The Save Space Letter-Writing
Campaign is intended reach President Obama while he
is reviewing the report.
Some of the committee's findings and recommenda-
tions included:
* The gap between the retiring the shuttle and the
beginning of the Constellation program will likely
stretch seven years
* Extend the life of the shuttle program to 2011,
with the possibility of extending it further to 2015
* Extend the life of the International Space Sta-
tion to 2020, as opposed to the scheduled shut
down in 2015
* Support a commercial crew delivery service to
the International Space Station.
* Guarantee commercial contracts to supply
cargo and transport crew and fuel to the ISS
* Support a "Flexible Path" of exploration to new
sites, such as lunar orbit, asteroids that cross
Earth's path, orbiting Mars and rendezvousing
with moons of Mars to inspire renewed interest in
the Space Program.
is going to be affected when
the shuttle goes away," he
said.
The Save Space campaign
can be followed on Facebook
and Twitter. The Facebook
account already has more
than 200 friends, said Mr.
Fisher.

paign. Imagine how many
people those 200 can touch.

to get in character on-site.
Cost is $10 to participants and
$5 to spectators as well as the
donation of a non-perishable
food item, Ms. Nunez said.
Thrill the World 2009 Mel-
bourne will take place from 9

over the country to support
the program," he said.
The goal of the letter-writ-
ing campaign is to get
500,000 letters to President
Obama by Oct. 31.
"The timing is important,"
said Mr. Fisher. "The Augus-
tine report is on his desk. It's
a great time to start a cam-
paign and get it to him."

Branching out
By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com
Like many teenagers,
Nina Tomaka of Mel-
bourne was fresh out of
high school and unsure of
what direction to take.
She was certain of one
thing, however; she would-
n't let a learning disability
get in the way of pursuing
a career.
It wasn't long until Nina,
22, became involved in
Brevard County's Project
SEARCH, a Health First-
sponsored program that
provides education and
employment opportunities
for individuals with dis-
abilities.
From there, Nina
became a client of the Bre-
vard Business Leadership
Network, a nonprofit
organization that assists
businesses in the recruit-
ment and training of quali-
fied workers with disabili-
ties.
The skills she acquired
during both of these pro-
grams landed her a posi-
tion as an activities assis-
tant at SarahCare, an adult
daycare center in Mel-
bourne.
"In the beginning, she
was more shy and a little
unsure of herself," said Ra
Popham, co-owner of the
branch. "Now, she comes
in here and gets right to
work, chatting with our
clients and planning the
activities for the day. She's
become so much more
confident now that she's
realized she has the skills
to succeed at this job."
As activities assistant,
Nina's job duties consist of
leading a variety of games
and activities, as well as
preparing lunch and pro-
viding one-on-one atten-
tion to the center's 14-plus
clients.
When she was first hired
at SarahCare in July, Nina

The other recipients -
each of which have bene-
fited from hiring clients

include Melbourne Animal

Symetrics Industries and
Whittaker Cooper Finan-
cial Group.
The event, hosted at the
Crowne Plaza Oceanfront
Resort in Indialantic, will
feature a buffet lunch and
guest speakers from each
business.
"My main goal is to
change the community's
perspective on people with
disabilities," said Betsy
Farmer, executive director
of Brevard BLN. "For years,
people with disabilities
were placed in the easiest
jobs because they were the
easiest to find for them. We
want to change that by
matching our clients' abili-
ties with the needs of local
businesses."
Currently, Ms. Farmer is
partnering with the Flori-
da BLN and Able Trust to
launch a statewide mar-
keting campaign that sur-
rounds the idea, "Don't
look at my disability; Look
at my ability."
When asked about their
employees, who have a
wide-range of learning and
physical disabilities, many
of the Brevard BLN
employers found it diffi-
cult to identify them as
even having a disability.
"It's funny because I for-
get that Nina has a disabil-
ity in the first place," said

Your fake phone number is my real
number
To the woman using my cell phone number for her
fake phone number:
I don't know you, but I keep getting your phone
calls. All of them from young, excited men who are
very surprised to hear this is not your number. I
understand what you're doing. I was younger once,
liked to go to bars and clubs and didn't always want
to give my actual digits to some over-amorous guy
with whom I felt no connection.
Maybe you made up the number. Maybe, in an act
of revenge, you're using an old boyfriend's number
(which, if true, let me say you're better off without
that loser based on the number of collection agencies
calling for him over the 11 months I've had this
phone).
Regardless, I have one request. Could you please do
what my bar-hopping friends and I did back in the
day and hand out a number that rings at a business
- preferably one with an automated answering serv-
ice so the guys (1) won't pester a live person and (2)
will know right off the bat they've got a false number?
Although I can tell you from experience most of your
would-be suitors call at least twice before they get
the picture.
It's not that I don't get a laugh from some of the text
messages I've received; you must be very nicely pro-
portioned, as well as not offended by obscenities to
get compliments like that. But the 1 a.m. booty calls
sometimes wake me and my family and I'm hoping
that will stop.
So if you could change your fake phone number to
something else, like the local DMV or power compa-
ny or maybe even a Hooters, if you want to give the
guys a little hope, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Conservative vs. liberal
If a conservative doesn't like guns, they don't buy
one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, then no one should
have one.
If a conservative is a vegetarian, they don't eat
meat.
If a liberal is, they want to ban all meat products for
everyone.
If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks
about how to defeat his enemy.
A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and
still look good.
If a conservative is homosexual, they quietly enjoy
their life.
If a liberal is homosexual, they loudly demand leg-
islated respect.
If a black man or Hispanic is conservative, they see
themselves as independently successful.
Their liberal counterparts see themselves as vic-
tims in need of government protection.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about
how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.
If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he
switches channels.
If a liberal doesn't like a talk show host, he attacks
and attempts to discredit him while demanding that
he be shut down.
If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to
church.
If a liberal is a non-believer, he wants any mention
of God or religion silenced.
If a conservative decides he needs health care, he
goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that
provides it.
If a liberal decides that he need health care, he
demands that his neighbors pay for his.

To the Editor:
Every day there is more reason to get rid of this
administration, as the country is sinking fast. Obama
promised to support the Space Agency and lied to all
the people who believed him. Think of the amount of
money wasted with all the bad programs. Billions for
Cash for Clunkers which has now devastated the used
car dealers, billions to the banks who are still sitting on
the money and not helping anyone, billions to bail out
Wall Street. Billions to bail out General Motors and
Chrysler and they are still going broke, but not one
cent for NASA. While there are still some of the
reporters from the Orlando Sentinel and the Today
paper who keep knocking NASA, you better get the
picture as to where your bread is buttered. If NASA
goes down, it won't be just the engineers that get laid
Exploring
W ell, you finally did
it. After months,
even weeks of
planning, you finally took
the plunge.
After hours of research-
ing magazines, the Inter-
net, the opinion of friends,
"Consumer Reports," etc.
you finally settled in and
bought your first comput-
er. You've just opened a
door into a whole new
reality that only the
computer-literate seem
unfazed by. Welcome
aboard.
So now what?
All those magazines and
consumer reports don't
tell you what you are going
to do with your new
machine, they just tell you
which ones they think are
better. Why are you getting
a computer in the first
place? What do you need a
computer for? What are
you going to do with it?
If you are a new comput-
er owner (that is, you've
never owned a computer
before in your life), there
are a few things you ought
to know right off the bat,
the kind of things that no
one tells you about when
you were shopping for
your machine, such as
how to do the basic things,
such as sending and
receiving e-mail, typing
letters, "downloading" and
going on the Internet.
You've heard about
these things a thousand
off, but the people in all 10 states that depend on the
Space Agency to keep the economy going will also be
devastated. None of the programs implemented by this
Congress, and I use that term carefully, has worked.
Nancy Pelosie and Gringy Harry are a disaster. Now
they are looking at cash for appliance clunkers. Are
they all brain-dead in Congress and I think we already
know the answer to that. No C.O.L.A.s for Social
Security, highest unemployment in over 20 years and
no relief in sight. Was this the change you were looking
for? I guess you liberals can still blame Bush even
though the Democrats controlled Congress for the last
two years.
Shades of Jimmy Carter all over again.

times, but what does it all
really mean?
I know first-hand just
how confusing things can
be when you bring home
your new computer. There
is a lot of excitement as
the machine is plugged in
for the first time. Then,
when you throw the switch
and turn it on, your
journey begins.
You may encounter a
menu where you have to
fill out some information
about yourself and you
may have to enter an
authorization code, but
before too long, you will
make it to the desktop,
where all the magic
happens.
The desktop is the first
place you will see every
time your machine wakes
up and stabilizes. You can
tell when the machine is
fully awake because the
little hourglass will go
away and the hard drive
light will stop flickering.
You can recognize the
desktop by the presence of
a button on the lower left
corner of the screen (the
"start" button), a clock at
the lower right and the
presence of icons, such as
"my computer," "my
Take a look around.
Click the start button
and a menu will open that
leads to more options.
Move your mouse up the
menu and you will see
different program groups
expand as you pass your
mouse over them. This is
where you can find all the
controls that make your
new machine do the
things you need it to do.
Hold your mouse over
the "programs" program
group and you will be able
to see all the programs
that are already installed
on your machine.
Programs are like tools
and the "programs group"
is like a giant toolbox.
Each of the programs is a
tool specifically tailored
for a specific task and, like
most tool boxes, it is OK to
have two or more of the
same kind of program.
Glance down the list of
programs and get
acquainted with the tools
in your toolbox. This is
where you go to launch
the programs you will
need to be productive with
your computer.
Get familiar with what
programs are installed on
your new machine and
take a little time to get
familiar with how they
work.
Most people will try to
learn Windows. I've always
counseled people not to
worry about Windows,
instead, focus on learning
the programs installed in
Windows.
After spending some
time exploring the pro-
grams installed on your
new machine, it's time to
have some fun.
Click "start," "programs"
and "games." Don't ignore
the games as just frivolous
time-wasters. Use the
games that are already
installed on your machine
as tools to familiarize
yourself as to how to
interact with your
machine.
You'll quickly find that
once you master a pro-
gram such as Solitaire, you
will also have mastered
things such as "clicking
and double clicking,"
"dragging and dropping"
and have gained exposure
to such common program
features such as "pull
down menus."
Games allow you to
learn how to interact with
your machine without the
pressure having to pro-
duce anything while you
learn.
I wish you the best of
luck and welcome you to
the never ceasing world of
computers.

COCOA Camels, sloths
and wolves are not animals
one would normally associate
with Florida.
But these animals, as wells
as saber tooth cats,
mastodons and megladon,
the ancient shark, were all
inhabitants of Brevard Coun-
ty around 10,000 to 13,000
years ago.
Fossils and cast replica of
fossils of these extinct crea-
tures are currently on display
at the Brevard Museum of
History and Natural Science
in Cocoa.
"Most people have no idea
that creatures this large lived
here in Florida," said
Marykim Brown, executive
director of the museum.
For example, the giant
ground sloth was 15 to 20 feet
tall.
"Research has shown pre-
historic man hunted
mastodon and think they
hunted ground sloths as well,"
said Ms. Brown.
Brevard County and the
surrounding area was once
teeming with this unusual
wildlife, said Ms. Brown.
The giant sloth on display
at the museum was discov-
ered in the Daytona Beach
area, she said. Many
Mastodon teeth were discov-
ered in Brevard County dur-
ing canal dredging.
Fossils of deer, wolves,
camels, sloths, mastodon,
and saber tooth cats, shells
and plants that once inhabit-
ed the area are also on display.
The exhibit was donated by
private collector Cliff Jeremi-
ah of Jacksonville, and will be
on display for the next two
years, said Ms. Brown.
The Brevard Museum of
History and Natural Science is
located at 2201 Michigan Ave.,

through Thursday.

resources used to feed the

many places in the world?
Why should we care about
the homeless? Is it our
business? Are these people
members of our own family
and worthy of our concern
about them? Why is it our
problem and why should we
care for the needs of others?
It is not logic that drives us
to help others. On the surface,
at least, it is illogical to give
away our hard-earned money.
Our family might need that
money. Why would we give it
to someone we don't even
know?
If it is not human nature
compelling us to help a
stranger and there is no legal
obligation to share what we
have with others, then what
drives our desire to do so?
We have values, principles
of right and wrong plus
conceptions of good and bad
that directs our lives and
demands that we behave a
certain way. We don't give
charity because it makes
sense, or because we instinc-

it is good to help those who

Where do our morals come

the value of charity? It was the
Hebrew Bible that proclaimed
that our income is only partly
ours. It doesn't really belong
to us at all, but is given to us
on loan, to use to serve G-d,
to better G-d's world and to
distribute to the needy. The
Hebrew word for charity is
tzedakah, meaning "justice."
The Jewish tradition sees
charity not as a noble act of
generosity, but as a moral act
of justice. To give is simply
the right thing to do.
We may have a wonderful
sense of values, but they do
not live in a vacuum. To
survive and spread, values
need institutions and
communities in which they
are fostered and taught. That
is the function of a synagogue
and other religious institu-
tions along with their
education program. These are
places where values are
taught and lived. By joining a
community devoted to these
ideals, we become sensitized
to the needs of others. By
studying our institution's
messages and following the
way of life it teaches, its values
are shared and passed down.
We need to give tzedakah to
feed the poor and shelter the
homeless. But we also need to
ensure that the very value of
tzedakah is nurtured and
sustained, so that our
children should never suffer
from moral poverty.
The money, time and
energy for synagogues,
religious schools and other
religious and academic
institutions are, indeed,
appropriate in the manner in
which I have described.
Synagogues teach morals and
values, especially the impor-
tance of helping others. It is
their growth and survival that
provides the common
gathering place in which
problems of the hungry,
homeless and other suffer-
ings are addressed and
brought to the forefront of our
thinking.

Sea bean festival celebrates beach treasures
By Jenet Krol
Krol@hometownnewsol.com
COCOA BEACH More
than 200 varieties of sea
beans wash ashore on the
beaches of Brevard County
every year.
The seeds of vines or
trees that grow in rain-
forests from South Ameri-
ca to Mexico, sea beans
come to U.S. shores after
floating on sea currents
across the tropics.
The close proximity of
the Gulf Stream to Brevard
County's shoreline makes
the area a prime spot for
collectors.
After a few days of strong
east winds, sea beans are
deposited on our beaches,
nestled in mats of sea-
weed, completing a jour-
ney that started hundreds
of miles away.
Every year, sea bean
enthusiasts gather at the
Cocoa Beach Public
Library for the annual
International Sea Bean
Symposium and Beach-
comber's Festival.
This year the festival is
scheduled Oct. 16-17.
The two-day festival
includes presentations by
marine scientists, beach
walks, contests and sea
bean identification.
Close to 1,000 beach-
combing enthusiasts come
to the symposium every
year, said Margot Gould,
public relations specialist
for the Cocoa Beach
Library.
"Seabeaners are really
passionate," she said.
It's all about finding
interesting things that
wash ashore, said Margie
Mitchell, co-planner of the
symposium and avid sea-
bean collector.
"Everything has a story,"
said Ms. Mitchell. "Let it be
a sea bean or Lego piece,
it's fascinating to think
about the voyage it's been
on before it gets here. It
inspires the imagination."
The big event of the fes-
tival is the bean-a-thon, in
which beachcombers have
two hours to find as many
different sea beans as they
can.
"People can go to any
beach they want in Bre-
vard County from 8 a.m. to
10 a.m. and collect as
many things as they want.
Whoever finds the most
variety of sea beans and
anything else interesting
can enter the contest," said
Ms. Mitchell.
Beach finds must be at
the library by 10:30 a.m.
Saturday morning.
Prizes will be awarded to
beachcombers who bring
in the most variety of sea
beans, those who can find
specific varieties to com-
plete a "grand slam" and
for the rarest or most
unusual sea bean.
Experts will be on hand
to identify sea beans or
any other interesting finds
from private collections.
There will also be an odd
bean contest for beans not
found during the bean-a-
thon.
Prizes will be awarded
for the oddest beans in the
categories of sea heart,
hamburger bean and sea
pearl.
Inside the library, ven-

jewelry made from sea beans and other objects found

Beachcombers' Festival. This year's event will be Friday

dors will offer sea bean
and seashell themed prod-
ucts, and educational pre-
sentations will teach first
time beachcombers the
most effective way to hunt
for floating treasurers.
Curtis Ebbesmeyer, an
oceanographer from Seat-
tle, will be this year's
keynote speaker, dis-
cussing his new book,
"Flotsametrics and the
Floating World," at 7:45
p.m., Oct. 17.
The 14th Annual Sea
bean Symposium and
Beachcombers Festival is
scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. Oct. 16 and from 8
a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 17.

You can make a lot from very
little. These are virtuous ideals
saved for you. This keeps your
spirit strong and eager.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct.22
Your teaching and communica-
tion skills will continue to be
called on to help others who
are ready to know more about
all that you know. Educating is
one of your greatest gifts, along
with healing and creativity. You
love to share and are generous
with your time and wisdom.
Your reward is the joy that
comes back from the giving.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Relax. Release, regenerate and
re-group. Let go of the past and
allowthe universe to move you
in the direction of your higher
desires. Meditate, center your
thoughts and quiet your mind.
Just allow yourself to be. Find
that comforting oneness within
and ask spirit to surround you
with its loving, healing power. It
will.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec.21
This is a time to work on your
greater long-range goals.
Stretch your limits. Expand your
power. Positive energy align-
ment for Sagittarius has moved
into place in the universe.
Higher wishes are ready to be
fulfilled. Increased spiritual
awareness helps even more.
You now have the vision to
change things for the better.
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Strive to simplify your life rather
than complicating it. Focus on
today. Tomorrow will be here
soon enough. Do what is need-
ed now. Live a natural life.
Sometimes less is more. Peel
away illusion and cut to the
bottom line. Is this good for me
or not? Answer that question
and every other thing will fall in
place.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Now is a good time to fine tune
your life. Set your goals, get
clear on your priorities and
manifest the desired results.
Don't wait around. Now is the
time for action. You are in the
right place at the right time.
Timing is good to begin new
projects. Transform blocked
energy into new beginnings.
Go for it with gusto.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
Set healthy, productive bound-
aries. Work within them to the
fullest. Refuse to allow yourself
to be pushed around. Now is a
good time to clean up loose
ends and nagging responsibili-
ties left hanging too long. Open
your imagination and vision.
You know what is right. Trust
this great inner vision and all
will be well.

Hometown News
stayca is an outiorsmans paradise
Merritt Island area is an outdoorsman's paradise
Parks,
recreational
facilities abound
By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
If you're in search of the
"great outdoors" for your next
staycation, look no further
than Merritt Island.
Situated in central Brevard
County, Merritt Island is
home to more than 20 coun-
ty-operated parks, the Merritt
Island National Wildlife
Refuge and several venues
that cater to extreme sports.
The Merritt Island National
Wildlife Refuge, established
in 1963 as an overlay of
NASAs John E Kennedy Space
Center, consists of 140,000
acres of a wide variety of
habitats for more than 1,500
plants and animals. Those
habitats include coastal
dunes, saltwater estuaries
and marshes, freshwater
impoundments, scrub, pine
flatwoods and hardwood
hammocks.
Sandee Larsen, office man-
ager for the Merritt Island
Wildlife Refuge Association, a
"friends" group for the refuge
with more than 1,000 mem-
bers, said the main points of
interest for the refuge are the
Visitor's Center, the Black
Point Wildlife Drive and the
Haulover Canal Manatee
Observation Deck.
"Black Point is a 7-mile,
self-guided auto tour with 12
stops," Ms. Larsen said. "Basi-
cally, you'll see water and
wading birds, alligators,
otters, turtles and birds of
prey. It's the one stop you're
sure to see some wildlife."
There are also opportuni-
ties for fishing, hunting, boat-
ing and paddling.
TheVisitor's Center is locat-
ed 3-1/2 miles east of State
Road 402. For more informa-
tion, call (321) 861-0668 or
visit http://www.fws.gov/mer-
rittislandl/Index.html.
Most county parks are situ-
ated along bodies of water,
including the Indian River,
Banana River and Sykes
Creek. Activities cater to near-
ly every type of sport imagi-
nable; from surf fishing and
swimming to canoeing and
kayaking to volleyball and
horseshoe, the opportunities
for physical activity are nearly
endless.
Kelly Park East, located at
2550 N. Banana River Drive, is
a 15-acre park internationally
recognized for its windsurfing
area along the Banana River.
The park features a natural
catamaran/sailboard launch
area with a sandy beach,
shower, boat ramps, dock,
pavilion, grills, restrooms and
drinking fountains.
Kiwanis Island Park, situat-
ed in a wildlife sanctuary,
caters to active and passive
recreational pursuits, includ-
ing boating, rowing and pad-
dling in Sykes Creek, the
Barge Canal and the Banana
River, as well as fishing, bas-
ketball, softball, tennis, rac-
quetball and wildlife viewing.
The park contains two
lighted adult softball fields, a
community center, full
indoor and outdoor basket-
ball courts, a boat launch and
two-lane boat ramp, picnic
areas and playgrounds.
Kiwanis Island Park is at
951 Kiwanis Island Park Road.
Call (321) 455-1380.
Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary,
located at 805 Sykes Creek
Parkway, Merritt Island, is a
436-acre bird reservation and
sanctuary that offers a
"wilderness escape in an
urban environment." The
park is known with bird-
watchers worldwide and as a
natural lagoon and bird rook-
ery linked with canals created
for mosquito control and sur-
rounded by a man-made
dike. A trail on the dike pro-
vides access to waterways for
fisherman, birdwatchers and
paddlers. Be on the lookout
for dolphin and birds such as
the wood stork, belted king-
fisher and white or brown
pelican.
For the extreme sports
enthusiasts, Merritt Island's
Paradise Skatepark & Funplex
offers one of the largest
indoor and outdoor parks on
the coast, with a 18,000-
square-foot outdoor park and
a 10,000-square-foot indoor
park featuring state-of-the-
art ramps.
The Funplex also has a
BMX course and an 18-hole
miniature golf course.
Paradise Funplex is at 555
Fortenberry Road, Merritt
Island. For more information,
call (321) 454-7777 or visit
www.paradisefunplex.com.
Andy Stefanek/staff photographer
Jered Sundin, 15, of Titusville does a nifty rail trick at the
Paradise Skatepark and Funplex in Merritt Island. The
attraction also has an 18-hole putt-putt golf course and
three paintball fields.
