An $1,100 grant from
Community Foundation
of Brevard will allow Bre-
vard Art Museum to
extend a program
designed to provide a cre-
ative outlet for victims of
domestic violence.
Founded last November,
the Art-n-Soul program is
dedicated to providing an
opportunity for survivors
of domestic violence to
express themselves cre-
atively in a supportive
environment and offers a
window in which to see
future successes, said Bob-
bie McMillan, director of
The Museum School at
Brevard Art Museum.
"This started out as a
way to give moms and
their kids a period of time
where they can be creative,
but not in a strict environ-
ment," Ms. McMillan said.
"It gives them individual
time to feel good about
themselves and have a
positive influence."
Each week, instructors
travel to Serene Harbor
domestic violence shelter
to offer classes in a variety
of mediums, such as pot-
tery and making sta-
tionery. Projects include
basic crafts for young chil-
dren, such as making a
clay handprint.

Students can buy, sell used textbooks through TwiceText.com

By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com

There's one task that can
take the excitement out of
starting a new college
semester buying books.
As if the toll of waiting in
line all afternoon wasn't
enough, then it's time to
fork over that extra cash
you've been saving all sum-
mer just to afford them.
"It's expensive to keep

buying new or used books
that are incredibly marked
up and then sell your old
books back for as little as
possible," said Adam Linds-
ley, a Melbourne resident,
who just started his sopho-
more year at the University
of Florida in Gainesville.
This daunting chore,
which hangs over thou-
sands of students each year,
provided Adam and his
friend, Chris Struttmann, of

Melbourne Beach, with the
motivation to form a new
company, Brilliant Innova-
tions Group, LLC.
Under the company's
name, the two entrepre-
neurs, both 19, launched a
Web site this past June
called, TwiceText.corn.
The site allows students
to buy and sell textbooks
and class notes to one
another in local markets,
bypassing university and

college bookstores.
The Web site serves as a
platform for students to list
the books they want to sell
and search for the books
they want to buy in a very
user-friendly way, said Mr.
Lindsley, an accounting
major.
"By eliminating the mid-

Women work to empower others

By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com

Many Brevard County
residents have the knowl-
edge, experience and moti-
vation to launch their own
business, but lack the
means to get started.
That's where the South
Brevard Women's Center
steps in serving as the
force necessary to provide
these entrepreneurs with
the extra push they need.
"I was seeing a lot of
women come into our cen-
ter, who were eager to start
their own businesses, but
other factors kept getting in
the way," said Jenny
Gessler, executive director
of the Women's Center.
"They had these big
dreams, but didn't know
where to begin."

impact of a similar loan
program that assisted

to pay their loans back,"
she said. "I was really sur-

Florida Tech's golden

exceeds $50 million

By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com

It was an ambitious goal,
but apparently one that
wasn't outside the realm of
possibility.
In honor of Florida Insti-
tute of Technology's 50th,
or "golden," anniversary,
school officials embarked
on a capital fundraising
campaign in 2003 to raise
$50 million for the univer-
sity. On Sept. 26, Florida
Tech announced at a 50th
anniversary celebration
that it had far surpassed its
goal, raising a total of
$59,465,000.37.
Why count the 37 cents?

It's an important factor in
the history of the start of
the university, said Antho-
ny J. Catanese, president of
Florida Institute of Tech-
nology.
More than 50 years ago,
Jerome Cooper, the
founder of Florida Tech,
and a bunch of guys were
at a bar in Cocoa Beach
discussing the need for a
local engineering school,
but lamenting the fact that
they had no money to
found such an institution,
Mr. Catanese said.
"And there was this guy

"One student, last year,

taking the course first), and

Out of approximately
1,990 students at Melbourne
High School, 485 students
are enrolled in the advanced
placement program. Of
those, 57 received Advanced
Placement Scholar Awards,
which means they passed
the exams. The exam grades
are based on a scale of 1-5,
and a student must receive
at least a 3 to pass.
Sixteen students qualified
for the AP Scholar with Dis-
tinction Award by earning an
average grade of at least 3.5
out of 5 on all AP exams
taken, and grades of 3 or
higher on five or more of
these exams.
Thirteen students quali-
fied for the AP Scholar with

average grade of at least 3.25
out of 5 on all AP exams
taken and grades of 3 or
higher on four or more of
these exams.

With the localization tool,
the site allows users to only
search for items in their spe-
cific market.
Once a user finds a book
they'd like to purchase, he or
she sends an e-mail via the
Web site to the seller.
Because they are in the
same market, students can
choose to meet on campus

the exchange, while avoid-
ing the hassle and costs of

Award by completing three
or more AP exams with
grades of 3 or higher out of a
possible 5.
Last year was the first year
the school offered the
advanced placement diplo-
ma program, in which stu-
dents must enroll in at least
six advanced placement
classes and pass the corre-
sponding exams. The pro-
gram is recommended for
those entering the 10th
grade. In the 2008-09 school
year, nine students earned
advanced placement diplo-
mas. This year, 12 students
have the potential to earn
advanced placement diplo-
mas.
The benefit to students is
the opportunity to earn col-
lege-level credit while still in
high school, Ms. Spinazzola
said.
"My goal as a coordinator
is to really encourage stu-
dents who want to go to col-
lege to take advantage of
these courses to prepare
them (for college)," she said.
Ms. Spinazzola concluded
by saying she's proud of the
students who earned this
award.
"Congratulations to stu-
dents who have earned such
a high award," she said.

"Our sole purpose is to
put students in contact with
other students," Mr. Linds-
ley said. "Once we've done
that, the student has ful-
filled all the uses of our site."
As of now, the Web site is
concentrated on two specific
markets the University of
Florida market and the Bre-
vard Community College
market, where Mr.
Struttmann attends.
The guys spent the majori-
ty of their summer promot-
ing their site on the UF cam-

sites, such as Myspace and
Facebook.

prised by how successful the
program was, so I decided to
try it here."
For the past five months,
the Women's Center has
organized a series of events
designed to fund the micro-
loan program and is in the
process of providing its first
loan to a Brevard County
resident.
Once all the details are
worked out, the center will
partner with a local bank to
apply for the loans, and in
turn, provide them to those

who qualify on a case-by-
case basis Ms. Gessler said.
These small direct loans
are available to both women
and men, who earn low to
moderate incomes, as a way
to help fund start-up, newly
established or growing small
businesses.
Micro-loans can provide
for many uses, including
inventory, working capital,
supplies and equipment,
Ms. Gessler said. They also
tend to have less stringent
credit and capital condi-
tions as compared with tra-
ditional bank loans, which
generally require extensive
business experience, as well

as excellent credit.
To be considered for a
micro-loan, each applicant
must undergo a multi-
faceted approval process,
work with staff to develop a
comprehensive business
plan, as well as participate
in a series of technical assis-
tance classes to better pre-
pare them for becoming a
small business owner. Based
on certain criteria, the cen-
ter will provide small busi-
ness loans ranging from
$500 to $2,500.
'After a loan is made,
clients will be assigned a
business mentor to support
them and provide them with

wisdom, insight and experi-
ence in business success,"
Ms. Gessler said. "The
process is designed to give
the new micro-business the
highest likelihood of long-
term success."
The South Brevard
Women's Center, which was
established in 1975, oper-
ates with about 30 full- and
part-time staff and about
250 volunteers.
A nonprofit organization,
the center provides a wide-
range of services to women
and their families, who are
involved in some form of
crisis or are in a transitional
state.

'With so many people losing their jobs, assis-
tance such as the micro-loan program
becomes even more important."

Jenny Gessler
Women's Center

Services include support,
education, victim advocacy,
case management, transi-
tional housing, furniture
needs, monthly workshops
on topics such as budgeting
and the legal aspects of sep-
aration and divorce, as well
as a variety of counseling
for all types of victims,
including domestic vio-
lence, incest, eating disor-
ders, relationships, depres-
sion, unemployment and
abuse.
All of the programs are
extremely individualized
and are designed to provide
whatever type of care nec-
essary to get a client back
on his or her feet, Ms.

Gessler said
"Especially now with so
many people losing their
jobs, assistance such as the
micro-loan program
becomes even more impor-
tant," she said. "Many peo-
ple are afraid to move for-
ward with their business
plan out of fear they may
not be able to pay their
mortgage or other bills.
Now is a great time to pro-
vide a little help."

School tells all parents
their children are absent
From www.wcmt.com: A
student absence phone
call that went to every
family of students at a
West Tennessee middle
school caused an uproar.
The automated call is set
to go out at 9 a.m. each
day from Martin Middle

been marked absent that
day. But instead, the call
went to parents of all 475
students at the school.
Principal Nate Holmes
said about 20 people
showed up at the school,
but dozens of anxious
parents called after
receiving the message. The
school quickly sent
another call, saying there

It had no way of know-

Karl Hollander, former
director of the Brevard Art
Museum, initiated the pro-
gram in Brevard County after
participating in a similar pro-
gram in Spokane, Wash.
Gary Lang, president of
Community of Foundation of
Brevard, said his organization
has funded several museum
projects in the last 20 years.
Community Foundation of
Brevard was started in 1981 as
a foundation of the Mel-
bourne Palm Bay Area Cham-
ber of Commerce. The organ-
ization accepts donations
and invests the money. This,
in turn, creates an endow-
ment.
"If a donor gives money to a
regular charity, the organiza-
tion spends the money,
which is OK, but then later
the organization is back look-
ing for more money," Mr.
Lang said. "The money that's
given (to Community Foun-
dation of Brevard) is invested,
and the income from that is
distributed to the donor's
charity in their name, in some
cases, in perpetuity."
Mr. Lang added that some
donors simply want to give
money to the community at-
large.
"Occasionally, donors
come and say, 'We don't have
a favorite charity,' but they
want to give back," Mr. Lang
said. "They charge the board
with distributing the money
in a competitive grant request
process, where seekers must
apply for funds."
The grant money awarded

Ms. McMillan said the Art-

Bring the Olympics to America

It's really comforting to know that I can go to sleep
each night and know President O-Bush has his priorities
in order. Let's not worry about health care, Iran,
Afghanistan, double-digit unemployment. We need to
bring the Olympics to America. Maybe he will offer these
jobs to the elderly and disabled who are getting their
Social Security cost-of-living adjustments canceled at
least for the next two years and probably forever because
we can't afford to raise benefits. It's kind of ironic the bid
for America comes from Chicago, O-Bush's hometown.
Summer Olympics in Chicago, like the Cubs, a losing
proposition.

Rants are still too long

I'd like to know what happened to the rants and raves
section in your paper. Someone must have taken it over
because it sure is lousy now. You've got nothing but large,
long political rants. You used to have a little rants that
were easy to read and about the community. Now you
have it about the nation. It's stupid, these long ones no
one reads. Now you have one or two of them. What hap-
pened? Who's in charge of it now? Someone screwed up.
Why don't you go back to the old way and give us some-
thing to read. It's the most popular part of your newspa-
per.

Scratch the FCAT

This is about good education. What President Obama
said was pretty good, but the only problem is with the
Florida schools, we need to get rid of the FCAT. It is put-
ting a lot of pressure on kids and its making them hate to
come into school. They need more encouragement and
more gym classes to get them energetic and alert. It
shouldn't be all work and no play. They need music and
something to look forward to. The way they are running
it in Florida with this FCAT is threatening their diploma.
They need to stop spending so much time on that and
start working on what they can be good at, like President
Obama said. They need to change things here in Florida.

In response to
'Food for thought'

This is in response to the ranter who wrote about keep-
ing his god, his freedom, his gun and his money. You are
such a one-sided Republican and a racist. First of all, my
god is not your god because your god is evil. I believe
God loves everyone no matter what their race is. So hate-
ful remark about Obama and Hilary Clinton are so out of
line. How do you know if the president attends church?
Are you a member of the C.I.A. that you're so informed of
what goes on in Washington? Why do you have to carry a
gun? Carrying a gun won't protect you from you evil
thoughts. The rage you have in your heart, we all might
have to carry a weapon to protect ourselves from you.

A thought on the homeless

I would like to comment on the homeless. Apparently
the homeless are still without a home, food or money.
Drugs and alcohol are causes of homelessness. The only
difference is that these two addictions (affect everyone).
Even the rich have these problems. Some rich have
become poor and are now without a home, food or
money. Not all homeless are lost causes. If the homeless
are in this downward spiral with these addictions and
they can get help and recover. They can become produc-
tive citizens.
There are facilities that help the homeless. What is the
success rates of these facilities? Are there really high
numbers of changes lives? Brevard County should con-
sider making a homeless tent city and manage it like the
jail at Sharpes. They should keep all of the drugs and
alcohol out and manage the programs to aid people.

What are they afraid of?

Those congressmen who are trying desperately to
sneak through the Health Bill must be afraid to let the
public and other congressmen read the bill to see what it
contains.
This tells me, and anyone with any common sense,
that there must be some things in that bill that are not
only horrendous, but also horrendously expensive which
is why the bill is running into the trillions of dollars in
cost.
Some congressmen are asking for a mere 72 hours to
read through and examine this bill to finally be able to
read it, understand it, and find out why Nancy Pelosi
doesn't want anyone to study it.
The conclusion must be that the contents are frighten-
ing and will finally cost the taxpaying public their arms
and legs without any true improvement over our present
health plans.
Come on Pelosi, don't be afraid to let the people truly
know what we are facing. Let the bill be open to exami-
nation even longer than 72 hours. Of what are you afraid?

Where is our president?

Where is our president? We have commanders in
Afghanistan needing support and manpower. We have a
job crisis here in America, we have ACORN using tax
dollars to support enslavement of illegals and where is our
president?
Well, he is going to Copenhagen to help get the
Olympics in Chicago in 2016. Wow! That must be the most
important thing he has done since election.
Now I know why he needs all the czars. He is never here
in Washington to do the work himself.
So, he is not fulfilling his responsibilities as president,
but passing the buck to someone else to answer the hard
questions and do the hard things.
In my view, with the violence of gangs, the fact that
Chicago is broke financially and the idea that the only
reason President Obama would fight for it is political
payback, we should just forget putting Chicago's hat in the
ring as a possible Olympic site.
Write or call your congressmen or contact the Olympic
committee to express your views. I did.

one person to depend on
two or more computers.
And it's not just computers.
Where once only geeks

the hands of just about
anyone who wants one.
Wouldn't it be nice if
there was a way to access
all of the "stuff" that you

no matter what device you

There you are instructed to
check the e-mail inbox for
the e-mail address you just
entered and look for an e-

containing a confirmation

Check your e-mail and
you should find an e-mail
from Evernote with a
small, five to seven charac-

code to highlight it, right
click the highlighted code
and then click "copy."
Go back to the Evernote

the confirmation code field
and then click "paste." The

appear in the confirmation
code box.
Make a note of the
username and then click
the complete registration
button to bring you to the

username is correct and
then enter the password
and click sign in.
This brings you to the
Evernote Web interface. It's
kind of a central access
point where all of our
synchronized items can be
accessed without any
special software, which is
great for checking some-
thing from that computer
in the hotel lobby.
But how do these notes
get in here in the first
place? Well, we're not done
yet!
The next thing we want
to do is something that we
want to do from all of the
computers we have daily
access to. At the bottom
left of the Evernote home
page, (the page you get to
after you sign in) you
should see a download
link. Click it and open the
downloads page. This will
ask you where you will be
using Evernote and gives
you options ranging from
Mac OSX to Windows to
Palm Pre, iPhone, Black-
berry and more. Click the
icon representing what

kind of machine you are
installing on and then click
the "get Evernote...."
button.
Download and install the
program just as you would
any other software (and
yes, it's safe. It checks out
just fine) and do the same
for each machine you use
regularly. This way, no
matter what machine you
are using, if something
strikes your fancy and you
want to remember it, you
can just "clip it" right to
Evernote and then all of
your machines will have
access.
Things such as e-mails
or Web pages you want to
remember? Just highlight
the text and send it to
Evernote. You can do
screen captures or even
snag pictures from your
camera and have them
accessible no matter how
you access the Web.
Want to learn more? Log
back into the account you
just created at www.ever-

Census indicates more people in need

Annual survey shows marked
increase in Daily Bread clientele

By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
Soup kitchen and food
bank Daily Bread recently
completed an annual cen-
sus that indicates that the
number of people seeking
services is on the rise.
"I've done this census
twice a year until this year,"
said John Farrell, executive
director. "The idea was to
get a good idea of who our
clientele is."
Daily Bread, which pro-
vides one meal a day to vir-
tually anyone in need,
serves approximately 225
meals to the homeless and
working poor.
In 2008, Daily Bread's cen-
sus polled 626 clients. Dur-
ing a 10-week period in
2009, the census polled 923
different clients, asking their
names (in order to avoid
duplication), sex, whether
or not they are homeless,
how far they travel to Daily
Bread one way, how they
travel to the soup kitchen,
their date of birth, the num-
ber of hours worked, if at all,
on average, per week, and
for those who don't work,
whether or not they receive
a monthly income from
either Social Security, dis-
ability or a pension.
The results were not good.
The numbers indicate a
nearly 50 percent increase
in clients, and a rise in the
homeless, particularly in
homeless children. Last
year, Daily Bread's census
counted 25 children age 17
and younger as clients, all
non-homeless. This year, 63
children were listed as

clients, nine of whom are
now homeless.
This figure may be slightly
skewed, Mr. Farrell said, due
to a change in the U.S.
Department of Housing and
Urban Development's defi-
nition of "homeless." Previ-
ously, a person was not con-
sidered homeless if he or
she lived in transitional
housing, such as motels or
with relatives. However, the
new definition considers
anyone who does not live in
his or her own home as
homeless.
Regardless, more and
more people are seeking
free meals, particularly the
working poor who are
employed in the construc-
tion or trade industries.
But due to a heightened
sense of awareness about
the downtrodden economy,
thankfully, more people are
taking it upon themselves to
distribute food to the needy,
Mr. Farrell said.
"There's a lady who hands
out sandwiches on the
weekends at one of the local
parks, and another man
who distributes hamburgers
and hotdogs under the (192
causeway) bridge," Mr. Far-
rell said. "Other small
groups and churches are
also handing out food and
conducting food drives.
There are more and more
people doing things now, so
our daily average is staying
about the same."
There's also another dis-
appointing issue that's
come to light as a result of
the census, Mr. Farrell said,
and that is the lack of work.
Last year, 59 percent of

homeless is Daily Bread in Melbourne. One of the volun-
teers at Daily Bread is Willie Spivey of Melbourne. He is

those polled said they
worked an average of 28
hours per week. This year,
only 23 percent were work-
ing an average of only 20
hours per week.
And due to a rising num-
ber of foreclosures, Mr. Far-
rell said he's not optimistic
about next year's figures.
"It's only going to get
worse," he said.
On a positive note, Daily
Bread said donations to the
facility have remained
steady.
"Donations have been OK

for us, not just cash but
clothing and food as well,"
Mr. Farell said, thanks in
large part to the annual Let-
ter Carriers and Boy Scouts'
food drives.
Since the facility opened
in 1988, Daily Bread's soup
kitchen has served 1.3 mil-
lion meals to the hungry
and homeless in Brevard
County.

Amateur radio operators gather for convention Oct. 10-11

Platinum Coast Amateur Radio
Society hosts 44th annual event

By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
It might be called "Ham-
fest," but you're not going to
find any pork there. Plat-
inum Coast Amateur Radio
Society will host its 44th
annual Melbourne Hamfest
Oct. 10-11 for amateur radio
operators, or "hams," from
all over Brevard County.
The term "ham," which is
not an acronym, is slang for
amateur radio operator, said

Dan Fisher, public informa-
tion officer for the event. No
one knows the exact origin
of the term, but there are
several theories, including
one in which the word
"ham" originated as a
derogatory term used by
early commercial telegraphy
operators who referred to
the amateurs as "ham-fist-
ed" Morse code operators.
"The term stuck," Mr.
Fisher said, "and we wear
the nametag proudly."

This year's Hamfest will
feature the American Relay
League's south Florida
meeting, as well as topics
such as contesting, message
handling, first responder
stress, sending e-mail over
amateur radio and emer-
gency communications.
Additionally, the Brevard
Emergency Amateur Radio
Services group will feature
its state-of-the-art mobile
command and communica-
tions center, which was
"indispensable" during the
Palm Bay Mother's Day fires
of 2008, Mr. Fisher said.
Mr. Fisher added that ham
radio has several practical
uses today, the most impor-
tant of which is communica-
tion after a natural disaster.
"We all have our home
phones and our cell phones,
but when all else fails and
the communication systems
break down, I can communi-

cate literally by plugging a
wire into the back of my
radio," Mr. Fisher said.
Other uses include experi-
mentation and pursuit as a
hobby. Mr. Fisher said many
people do not realize the
power of ham radio.
"If you have a good anten-
na system, you can bounce
signals off the moon to talk
with someone on the other
side of the world," he said.
For those interested in
pursuing amateur radio, the
convention will include test-
ing for the Amateur Radio
License at the entry level,
general class and extra class.
According to the Platinum
Coast Amateur Radio Soci-
ety's Web site,
www.pcars.org, "amateur
radio is a privilege granted
by international treaty
through the World Adminis-
trative Radio Conference,"
which requires licensing for

amateur operators.
Melbourne Hamfest will
take place Oct. 10-11 at Mel-
bourne Auditorium, 625 E.
Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne.

Admission is $7. For more
information, call (321) 327-

Bookstore to host book fairs

Events designed to raise money
for local schools, nonprofits

By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
Local bookseller Barnes &
Noble makes it so easy to
donate money to your
favorite school or charity,
there's no reason not to do
it.
The bookstore will host a
book fair fundraiser for sev-
eral schools and nonprofit

organizations through the
end of the year, starting with
Melbourne's Florida Air
Academy Oct. 16-22.
All you have to do to
donate money to the school,
said Kaori Fischer, commu-
nity relations manager for
Barnes & Noble in Mel-
bourne, is pick up a voucher
at Florida Air Academy and
present it to the cashier

when you make a purchase
at Barnes & Noble. Eligible
purchases include books,
magazines, DVDs, CDs and
cafe items.
Barnes & Noble will
donate a percentage of the
week's sales to the school. If
you don't have a voucher,
there will be some available
at the store's registers.
Bonnie Miller, registrar for
Florida Air Academy, said
the school would use the
funds to purchase an E-
library research package,

"And the big thing is, stu-

Miller said.
On Oct. 16, students will

Barnes & Noble will host
21 book fairs for various
schools and organizations

Ms. Fischer said these

opportunity for Barnes &
Noble to raise money for
local organizations.
"It's a great way to cele-

be partnering with so many
organizations," she said.

Campaign
From page A7
A $1.5 million endow-
ment to create the Farmer
Scholars Program, given by
Phillip W. Farmer. The retired
chairman, president and
chief executive officer of the
Harris Corporation said the
gift was his way of recogniz-
ing the importance of schol-
arships for deserving stu-
dents. Students from around
the state will complete for a
full scholarship to the univer-
sity.
Other gifts include funding
to build facilities and create
programs for the Emil
Buehler Center for Aviation
Training and Research, the
Scott Center for Autism Treat-
ment, the Ruth Funk Center
for Textile Arts and the North
Grumman Engineering and
Science Student Design
Showcase.
But Mr. Catanese said
there's still plenty more work
to do to achieve the universi-
ty's goal of becoming one of
the top 10 technological uni-
versities in the world.
"We still need new build-
ings for the College of Busi-
ness and College of Psycholo-
gy and Liberal Arts and a new
boathouse for our rowing
team," Mr. Catanese said. "We
offer our heartfelt thanks to
our donors. The majority of
the campaign gifts came from
local corporations, local resi-
dents and local alumni.
They're very important to us.
For a university that's only 50
years old to raise that much is
really remarkable, particular-
ly in this tough economy."
To make a donation, visit

"We are very lucky to have
him as our leader for these
concerts. I'm sure our
audience will love his

The music will "truly
have a big band sound,"
with five trumpets and five
trombones, instead of the
usual four trumpets and
four trombones, Mr.
Christy said.
The musicians will
perform many audience

"Night and Day." In
addition, popular local
vocalists Sally Hart- who

to trusted associates to
carry out. This team effort
insures short and long
term success.

slow you down or side-
track you. Your priorities
are in line. You know what
you want. Stay strong in
these beliefs. You have a
great heart. You work hard.
Live in the moment and
you will see success every-
where you turn. Refuse to
let the world or negativity
rob you of your rightful
rewards.

Maintain your present rou-
tine. It will continue to
move you forward toward
your goals and dreams.
You have an inexhaustible
supply of goodwill and
encouragement to others.

Virgo-Aug. 23-Sept. 22
Seek balance and health
for all. Be sure to give these
things to yourself, as well.
You are important, too. Let
your instincts continue to
guide you on when to act
and when to wait. Trust in
your higher power. When
you feel the blessing of
spirit, take bold action. No
power on earth will stop
you. True happiness fol-
lows.

Libra-Sept. 23-Oct. 22
You always have kind
words for everyone. It's
because of your human
kindness. Your feelings run
deep. When you love, you
love deeply. When you
hurt, you hurt just as much.
Listen to your inner wis-
dom. Continue to trust your
first impressions. They
speak when you are listen-
ing. There is no greater
truth.

Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Aren't you glad you held
firm to your beliefs when
others tried to sway you
with theirs? Your heart
power is unmatched. Oth-
ers may not always under-
stand you, but they are
awed by your results. This
glorious inner strength will
always be there to light and
guide your path when you
ask for it. Yours is a blessed
life.

Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
When you begin to get
sidetracked, step back,
catch a second wind,
regroup and move forward
again. Look at your options.
Prioritize them. Work on
the most important ones
first. Your greatest dreams
are on the way. Now is no
time to get stuck or give up.
Have a little fun every day.
Now take it to the next
level.

Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Your strong belief in doing
things right is a major fac-
tor in your wonderful per-
sonal and spiritual growth.
When you get that "tight"
feeling, nothing can slow
you down in your quest for
victory over life. Your heart
is huge. You are a superstar
in life and spiritual royalty.
It's because of forgiveness,
compassion and loyalty.

Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
You handle responsibility
very well. You know and do
what is expected of a
leader; such a strong con-
science. Don't forget that
you need nurturing, too.
Take a break. Slow down. If
your heart isn't in it, don't
do it. Your best ideas sur-
face when you are relaxed
and feeling happy. Now we
all share your renewed joy.

Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
Say this out loud each
morning upon arising: "My
life is filled with joy, peace,
love, health and abun-
dance. I gladly share my
abundance with others. I
take time each day to be
alone with my source to
heal, renew and be
inspired. This is my day. I
see God in everyone. I am
richly blessed and so grate-
ful ."

ends of Auto Racing Hall of
Fame Brick Walk.
Living Legends of Racing
is a nonprofit organization
that oversees the Walk of
Fame located at 3050
South Atlantic Ave.
The bricks are dedicated
to former great racing pio-
neers and highlights the
area's racing legacy.
"The history of the
whole racing thing started
here," said Olin Hopes, a
member or Living Legends
of Auto Racing. "It started
up in Ormond and reached
Daytona by the (19)30s
then came down in this
area in the (19)40s. The
sport went inland in the
50s when the Speedway
was built."
Many great racing leg-
ends are commemorated
in the bricks, including
William "Bill" France, Mad
Marion MacDonald, Rapid
Roy Hall, Ethel Flock Mob-
ley, Vicki Wood, James
Jerome "Red" Voigt and
more.
"If you are a racing fan
it's nice to see," Mr. Hopes
said. "People don't realize
that where City Hall sits at
in the Shores is part of the
old race track and grand
stand. A1A was also part of
the old track. It all had to
be moved, basically,
because people could not
make it to their homes."
The group also runs the
Living Legends of Auto
Racing Museum located in
the Sunshine Park Mall in
South Daytona.
The Shores Spa &Resort
is the Daytona area's pre-
mier resort and spa. It
offers luxurious rooms
with spectacular views of
Daytona Beach, the
Atlantic Ocean and Inter-
coastal waterway.
"We have a 10-story lux-
ury resort and spa that is
Daytona's only four dia-
mond hotel. It is really an
unexpected luxury," said
Susan Keavbney, the
resort's marketing direc-
tor. "Actually, we have a lot
of locals who live in Port
Orange, Daytona and
Ormond who come to take
advantage of our Indulge
Spa and Azure fine dinning
restaurant."
The resort contains
warm hues, Italian marble
restrooms, pillow top beds
and chic furnishings. Rates
start at $109 per night.
"It's really a cool and fun
undiscovered hang out
space," Ms. Keavbney said.
"It is refreshing and quiet
and at this time of year we
are not as busy, so locals
can really take advantage."
Just south of the Shores,
in Ponce Inlet, is one of the
state's most recognizable
attraction: the Ponce de
Leon Inlet Light Station,
located at 4391 Peninsula
Drive. It stands 175 feet
tall and is the tallest light-
house in Florida. It is also
the second tallest masonry
lighthouse in the nation.
The 203-step structure
attracts 175,000 visitors a
year. Admission is $5 per
adult and $1.50 per child
under 11. It opens every
day at 10 a.m. Closing

Today the structure con-
sists of the tower and a
museum with memorabil-
ia and historic facts on the
lighthouse and the sur-
rounding community.
The lighthouse was con-
structed in 1883 and
opened in 1887 as the
Mosquito Inlet Light-
house, which was the
name for the surrounding
area. The lighthouse
name changed in 1927
when Mosquito Inlet was
renamed Ponce Inlet.
Kerosene lit the struc-
ture until 1920 when a
generator was installed,
making the transition to
electricity.
In 1998, the structure
became a National His-
toric Landmark. The
Ponce Inlet Lighthouse
Preservation Association
maintains and runs the
structure.
"Those who visit will see

tions of lighthouse optics
in the world," director of
operations Mike Bennett
said.
"The Lighthouse also
gives visitors a sense and

the turn of the century for
Florida's coastal resi-

cation within Brevard Public
Schools inViera, was recent-
ly honored with the Janet
Linton Academy Leadership
Award at the National Acad-

Ms. McLaren has grown
the number of career acade-

one to 19, and her leader-

students a year. She secured
and managed a grant of $1.2
million from the Florida

fund career academy devel-

the success of her efforts
made it possible for four
Academies to fund their
year of planning with the
National Academy Founda-
tion.
The National Academy

Foundation is a network of
more than 500 career acade-
mies across the United
States. Career academies
expose high school students
to career options through
curriculum, paid intern-
ships and advisory boards,
while preparing them for
college and careers.
