COCOA BEACH -
This Labor Day week-
end, the waters of
Cocoa Beach will host
one of the largest non-
profit surf fests in the
country.
Close to 50,000 spec-
tators and competitors
and 300 volunteers are
expected to turn out in
support of the National
Kidney Foundation at
the 24th annual Cocoa

Started by Rich Salik,
a Cocoa Beach resident

raises funds for patients
in need of kidney trans-
plants or who are on
dialysis.
"Most kidney patients
don't have a disposable
income and travel and
medication can really
wear you down finan-
cially," said Mr. Salik.
A three-time kidney
transplant recipient,
Mr. Salik knows the
issues dialysis patients
face. For example, the
NKF has an agreement
with power companies
to return power to
patients who are dilat-

"The funds we raise
are for immediate assis-
tance, such as food,
clothing, transporta-

shelter," said Mr. Salik.

The Clemente Center at
the Florida Institute of Tech-
nology will be full of school
spirit Sept. 7, as the Florida
Tech cheerleaders host their
first-ever youth cheerleading
camp.
Boys and girls in kinder-
garten through eighth grade
are encouraged to participate
in the camp, which will be
from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. dur-
ing the Labor Day holiday for
Brevard Public Schools. No
prior cheerleading experi-
ence is required.
"We wanted a way to reach
out to the community and
teach these young girls and
guys some of these basic
skills," said Lindsay Nichols,
who has coached the Florida
Tech cheerleading team for
the past two years.

During the camp, partici-
pants will be divided into age
groups and travel through a
series of different training
stations, including cheers,
chants, jumps, stunts and
dance.
At the end of the event, the
students will perform a rou-
tine showcasing what they've
learned for parents and fami-
ly members.
Each participant will also
be invited to perform with
the Florida Tech cheerleaders
during halftime at a home
basketball game in Novem-
ber.
The concept of acquiring
these basic cheerleading
skills at such an early age
often inspires young children
to continue the sport in the
future, said Mrs. Nichols, who

Callers are asked to refrain from making slanderous

Respect our flag

I served my country for 21 proud years in the United States
Air Force and I have the highest respect for our American flag.
No one seems to realize what our flag stands for, OK maybe a
few do. But the people of the U.S. have lost what our flag is all
about.
On occasion, I see an American flag being flown, but it may
be dirty and torn or is not flown properly. Where has our Ameri-
can pride gone? I ask you please fly our American flag with the
utmost respect. If it's torn or faded, replace it. If it's dirty, wash it.
I do.

Rants are too long now

I used to really enjoys the rants and raves when they were just
short with one or two paragraphs or comments, but now these
long rambling letters, I don't find nearly as entertaining or
informative for that matter. You might want to re-consider
going back to a little bit less. Less is better.

Sign advertisement restrictions and more

I would like to suggest that someone, or a group with author-
ity, pass some laws pertaining to the "throw away" plastic
advertising signs that litter out streets. I would suggest that they
onlybe allowed to be used to promote dated events and not just
for advertising and they should not be posted earlier than two
weeks prior and must be removed before one week after the
event occurs. Violators need to face stiff fines for any that are set
out and do not meet these guidelines.
Next: Until recently how were large mowers, backhoes, bush-
hogs, etc. transported from point A to point B? Now they are
being driven very slowly along our roads, blocking traffic and
encouraging road rage. These are not licensed vehicles and
should not be driven on public streets. There was a solution in
the past. What happened to it?
Now, let's go way out and look for higher government to con-
sider. Have you even been driving and listening to the radio (so
much safer than testing) and heard a siren that encouraged you
to pull to the side of the road, but everyone else kept moving
and passed you?
Was the real source of the sound of a commercial on the
radio? Why is there no law to prohibit use of emergency sounds
on the air-ways? Why is this any different than falsely yelling
"fire into a crowd (which is a violation).
And lastly, does anyone ever question our lawmakers when
they spend mega bucks to phone to the masses fromWashing-
ton (long distance rate) with computerized messages that are
really intended to only pat themselves on the back at a taxpayer
expense?
Kudos to the men and women who are the unsung heroes
working our streets and medical facilities every day to keep us
healthy, wealthy and wise. On behalf of those being saluted,
maybe I should re-think the wealthy part.

Speak softly and your message will be heard

Let's honor the memory of the late Senator Kennedy by
acting civil and with respect for those who oppose our views
and yet speaking passionately about the need for meaning-
ful reform of our health care delivery system. Senator
Edward Kennedy was an outspoken advocate for the many
Americans who could not afford quality health insurance.
We need to impress upon our elected officials in Congress
that whatever health insurance bill comes out of committee
that it assures quality health insurance coverage for the
under insured and the uninsured as well as high health risk
persons. We can influence our Congressmen much more
effectively by entering into civil discourse rather than
shouting them down at town hall meetings.

Vote with your dollar
and find free beach access

I would like to respond to the article about parking
meters down by the beach. As a resident, I think most of the
local people have figured out that they don't want to pay
parking meters. So, we all go down to different beaches. And
that is the beauty of living in America; we can vote with our
dollar and we have the freedom to do what we want with
that. So, I am not putting quarters in the parking meter. I
will drive a few more miles and get free parking.

Consider attending 'Citizens Academy'

r two years ago, we
I started conducting
L Sheriff's Office Citizen
Academies. To give credit
where credit is due, we first
had the opportunity to
observe the Citizens Acade-
my started by Chief Brian
Lock in the West Melbourne
Police Department. We were
so impressed with Chief
Lock's program, we wanted
to replicate that success in
the Sheriff's Office.
To this point, we have
conducted four separate
academy classes graduating
more than a 100 citizens.
During the nine-week
program, citizens are
exposed to virtually every
area of the Sheriff's Office.
Participants have the
opportunity to speak directly
with the deputy sheriffs and
employees who are most
knowledgeable in their
specific field of expertise.
They will speak with patrol
deputies, corrections
deputies, investigative
agents, 911 communications

officers, K9 deputies, SWAT
deputies, crime scene
technicians and managers of
various units. They will also
have the opportunity to
meet with various agency
commanders who will talk
about their divisions and will
provide answers to all of
their questions.
Citizens participate in
mock crime scenes, airboat
and helicopter operations.
They tour various areas in
the Sheriff's Office to include
patrol precincts, the jail
complex, the 911 communi-
cations center and the
courthouse.
In addition, they spend
time with special teams like
the SWAT and dive teams
and the bomb squad,
learning about what they do

and familiarizing them with
the special equipment they
use.
Our priority is to make the
course interesting by making
the information as fast-
paced, diverse and interac-
tive as possible. Citizens are
given the opportunity to use
firearms, ride in airboats, use
the "Shoot Don't Shoot"
firearm scenario simulators,
and a variety of other
"hands-on" exercises. We try
to put the citizen in the
position of "being" the
deputy or 911 officer so they
can understand how
decisions are made and the
types of challenges that law
enforcement and corrections
personnel have to deal with
on a daily basis. We want
citizens to walk away with a
great understanding of why
we do what we do.
The program is as benefi-
cial to the Sheriff's Office and
its employees as it is to our
citizens. The citizens in the
program develop close
relationships with the

deputies and employees.
During the class, citizens and
deputies have quality time to
communicate with one
another and learn from each
other. The end result: abetter
understanding by our
deputies of citizen percep-
tions and opinions and a
better law enforcement
service to benefit us all.
Seats are currently
available in our upcoming
academy and citizens who
are interested can apply by
calling (321) 264-5201 or by
going to our Web site,
www.BrevardSheriff.com
and completing and submit-
ting an application.
Applicants will be required
to consent to a criminal
background check due to the
sensitivity of the training.
We look forward to seeing
you. On behalf of the 1,300
proud men and women of
your Sheriff's Office, it is an
honor to serve you.

SheriffJack Parker

No parking meters

To the editor:

District 3 County Commissioner (Trudie) Infantini thinks
only people who visit the beaches or boat ramps in Brevard
County should pay for them.
To me, this shows a fundamental lack of understanding of
the role of the governing body to which she was elected. We
pay our taxes together so that we can provide the community
with several services and benefits, one of which is access to
the natural beauty Brevard County is famous for.
Her line of reasoning is a slippery slope: some days I don't
have any garbage to take out. Why not weigh everyone's
garbage and make them pay for only what they have to
collect?
How about the roads I never drive down? Why should I pay
to have those repaved? My child is not yet of school age, I am
just being robbed of tax money aren't I?
I don't ever have any need for building permits. Why is all
my money going to pay for the salaries of that office? Does
Commissioner Infantini envision a county where we have
little coin slots on every park bench, a toll booth on every mile
of road or a bevy of itemized bills we have to wade through
each month that list every time we flushed our toilet or every
ounce of can we put out to recycle?
I'd bet she'd say no, but commissioner, I'd have to point out
the logic is one and the same.
Look, we all pay taxes so that we can provide a lot of things
for each other, some we personally might use right now, some
we don't. It's part of living in an organized community, and if
you get right down to it, the entire reason we have them in the
first place.
If not, why have a county at all? Why not just go live on your
sequestered compound somewhere and let the surrounding
area descend into anarchy?
It just sounds to me like instead of finding ways to make us
pay more for less services (because let's be clear, they are not
simultaneously proposing a drop in everyone's tax rate) they
ought to be working to find creative ways to be more cost
effective and create new revenue streams, just like every other
resident is having to do right now.
Just slapping a meter on services we already are taxed for is
a failure of problem solving.

Terry Howard
Port St. John

Response from Commissioner Infantini

In 2001, Brevard County voters approved a referendum to
finance the construction of numerous parks and additions to
existing parks. The funds were depleted before project
completion and voters were told their taxes would not
increase if they voted to borrow more money in order to
finish building the parks. The voters were not informed that if
property values decreased the county would have to raise
taxes to operate all the parks, golf courses, and boat ramps.
The Commissioners should cut spending wherever
possible. As a County Commissioner, I could not, in good
conscience raise tax rates when many residents are losing
their jobs and are barely able to make ends meet.
However, since our beaches and boat ramps are enjoyed
by both non-residents and residents, I recommended
implementing user fees (charge those using the facility).
Golfers pay fees. Indialantic and Cocoa Beach have parking

meters at their beach parks to help defray the cost of opera-
tions. The other options are to increase the cost to everyone
(regardless of whether they use the service or not) or spend
the county's reserves to run the facilities. Reserves are like a
savings account. I prefer to save the county's reserves for a
genuine emergency. My goal is to keep the county financially
solvent.
My office can be reached at D3.commissioner@brevard-
county.us for anyone willing to offer suggestions on efficien-
cy and/or improvements.

'Cap and Trade' equals bad deal for America

To the editor:

Do you know what "cap and trade" is? Should you even
care? This pollution-control program will affect every
person in America. Cap and trade will cost every house-
hold more than $3,000 in additional expenses every year if
it becomes a law. This program will dramatically increase
energy costs and cause considerable economic damage to
our country.
We are in the middle of a serious recession and our
government plans to impose one of the biggest tax
increases in history. It will affect every American who
turns on a light switch, uses air conditioning, drives a
vehicle, or consumes products, since just about every
economic activity involves the use of fossil fuels.
It promises to be a bureaucratic nightmare overseen by
government agencies that would collect and redistribute
trillions from family budgets, worker payrolls, and from
every business. Agriculture Commissioner Chairman,
Collin Peterson-D-Mimm said in the Washington Post:
"The truth is nobody knows for sure how this is going to
work. We just know it will bring in more mandates, more
regulations and more costs than ever before."
This bill passed narrowly in the House, with help from
eight Republicans.
Do not let this pass in the Senate.
Please call your senators, Bill Nelson and Mel Martinez
during this August recess.

Bob Taylor
Melbourne

Shorten your responses

To the editor:

I love to read Rants and Raves but not anymore. These
long-winded people have ruined a nice, get a quick thing,
good or bad off your chest, column.
Now when I see how long some of these articles are, I go
past what used to be a fun and interesting column. Come
on people, write for the newspaper and get your own

Art exhibit to showcase 'Pure' talent

Fifth Avenue Art
Gallery hosts
100 Percent
Pure Florida
By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
When most Floridians
hear the term "Florida's
best," they probably
think of an old television
advertising campaign
featuring one of the
state's most iconic crops:
oranges. But to Eau Gal-
lie's Fifth Avenue Art
Gallery, the term speaks
to the best artistic talent
in the state.
Fifth Avenue Art
Gallery, located in Eau
Gallie's Arts District, is a
co-op gallery, which is
owned by a group of
artists who display their
work in the space. The
gallery will host its annu-
al "100 Percent Pure
Florida" exhibit Sept. 4-
30, which will exclusively
feature the work of Flori-
da artists, said Claire Zip-
perly, co-op artist and
spokeswoman for the
gallery.
Ninety-nine artists
from around the state,
spanning regions from
the panhandle to Key
West, submitted more
than 275 pieces to be
judged for acceptance in
this juried art show, Ms.
Zipperly said. The judges
accepted 55 pieces of
work from 44 exhibiting

artists.
"There were some
(entries) that were very
creative," Ms. Zipperly
said. "All mediums are
represented, including a
number of collages, pot-
tery, sculpture, wood
carvings, jewelry and dig-
ital arts."
Pat Zalisko, a resident

of adjacentVolusia Coun-
ty, will exhibit her work
in the show for the sec-
ond time. She describes
her painting, titled
"Stormwarning," as an
abstract, or non-objec-
tive, two-dimensional
mixed-media piece.
"People generally see
things in my work and I

always tell them they're
right. It's what speaks to
the viewer," said the
retired attorney, who
added that she now has
the time to pursue her
lifelong passion for art.
Ms. Zalisko said she
was honored that her
work was selected for the
show from such a varied
pool of talented artists.
"This show has always
been known for touting a
diverse selection of Flori-
da artists, and I think
that's true," she said. "I'm
impressed with the quali-
ty of the work shown, and
I'm hoping people come
out for the show."
The opening reception,
which is open to the pub-
lic, takes place at 5:30
p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. At
that time, the judges will
announce prizes, includ-
ing the grand prize, "Best
of Show." The artist
whose work is chosen as
"Best of Show" will win a
private, one-man show at
Fifth Avenue Art Gallery
in June of 2010. The
opening coincides with
Eau Gallie's monthly First
Friday event, which fea-
tures live entertainment,
food and vendors in the
Eau Gallie Arts District.
Admission to the exhib-
it is free. Fifth Avenue Art
Gallery is at 1470 High-
land Ave., Eau Gallie. For

the show, call (321) 259-

Make the most of opportuni-

themselves. Make hay while
the sun shines is an old

action and make things hap-

assured.

Cancer-June 22-July 22
You know you are making
progress when warm feel-

friends. The happiness in
your heart ripples out, gets
into their hearts and comes

defining quality about life.
You are so generous with

ings you have given to others.
Live life with this glow. All is
well and much more will
soon be added.

Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
When situations are beyond
your control, let go and be
accepting. You have done
your best. Be satisfied. Back
off and keep your faith.
Human timing and universal
timing are two different
things. Sometimes we just
have to wait, be patient, have
faith and trust. Now things
will work out as supposed to.

Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Changes in attitude can
change lives. Great attitudes
can produce miracles. The
guardian angels watching
over us know. Refuse to let
little things annoy or upset
you. Keep on focusing on the

bigger picture. Be grateful for
all your accomplishments in
life. Stay on target. Many new
and great ones are on the
way.

Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Your life is coming into com-
plete focus. True purpose and
destiny has been lying deep
within you for all your earthly
days. Your desires and visions
from the past are bearing
fruit. Your future happiness is
assured. You are listening
and spirit is blessing you in
the highest ways anyone
could ever dream. And so it
is.

Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb.18
The world sees you as calm,
but under the surface, there
is a strong, fiery nature that
gives you the strength to
carry on, regardless of the
challenges faced on the road
of life. Your strongest gift is
that of communicating. You

Cocoa Beach
conquers all:
surfing, dining,
fishing, fun
By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com
The name "Cocoa Beach"
brings many things to mind:
the NASA space program, a
legendary surfing commu-
nity and the setting for the
long-running TV series, "I
Dream of Jeannie."
But today, the city of
Cocoa Beach offers so much
more.
Nestled between the
Atlantic Ocean and the
Banana River Lagoon, the
barrier island of Cocoa
Beach is often referred to as
"the jewel of the Space
Coast."
And it isn't difficult to see
why.
Cocoa Beach is both a res-
idential community and
tourist destination with a
base population of 12,800,
according to the city of
Cocoa Beach Web site,
www.cityofcocoabeach.com.
But each year that num-
ber reaches as high as
30,000 during the peak
tourist season when thou-
sands flock to the area to
soak up the sun and spend a
week or two doing some
Space Coast sightseeing.
For the past several
decades, Cocoa Beach has
done an excellent job of pre-
serving its historic down-
town area.
From surf shops and
clothing boutiques to gift
stores and jewelry venues,
it's easy to make a day out of
shopping whether by
bicycle or on foot.
Restaurants, such as the
long-standing Heidelberg
and Mango Tree, or week-
end hot spots, such as
Coconuts on the Beach and
the Chili Pepper Club, cater
to crowds of all ages.
Another draw to the
multi-faceted city is the
beautiful wildlife, fishing
opportunities and unique
plant species found
throughout its waterways.
Cocoa Beach's Thousand
Islands function as a "learn-
ing laboratory" for those
eager to explore the mazes
of mosquito canals and
local ecology, according to
the Thousand Island's Web
site, www.thousand-
islands.org.
At any one time, kayakers
can observe pelicans, bottle-
nosed dolphin, manatee,
river otter, rabbit and various
species of fish throughout
their island journey.
Just around the corner is
another hot spot, known to
house a different type of
species dogs.
Opened in March 2007, the
Lori Wilson Off-Leash Dog
Park is a 32,000-square-foot
paradise for pups and their
owners.
Equipped with benches,
dog toys and obstacles for
both large and small doggies,
the park serves regular atten-
dees, as well as one-time visi-
tors.
While all of these activities
are significant to the city, it is
the sport of surfing that has
helped shape Cocoa Beach.
For starters, Ron Jon Surf
Shop, which was opened in
the early 1960s, is a four-level
surf emporium visited by
thousands each year.
And with six miles of shore-
line, there are a number of

ure hunting for 15 years.

places for residents and
tourists to take on the surf,
one of them being the Cocoa
Beach Pier.
Many East Coast surfing
legends, such as Dick Catri
and Kelly Slater, got their start
surfing those very waves.
More than 80 surfers from
every generation have been
inducted into the city's East
Coast Surfing Hall of Fame,
which doubles as a public
museum.

"We developed a concept
years ago that, as surfers, we
are a society," said Rep. Tony
Sasso, R-Cocoa Beach, who
grew up surfing in the com-
munity and helped concep-
tualize the surf museum. "In
recognizing that, we hope to
keep the door open for the
next generation."
