Center to foster understanding of
cultural, creative achievements

By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
On Aug. 29, Florida Insti-
tute of Technology will open
a gallery that will be perma-
nently woven in to the fab-
ric of the university.
When the doors open,
The Ruth Funk Center for
Textile Arts will be the only
textiles center in Florida,
and possibly the southeast-
ern United States, said Carla
Funk, no relation, the cen-
ter's director.
The opening exhibit,
titled "Coat Couture: Inspi-
ration to Creation," will fea-
ture the creations of the
museum's benefactor, Ruth
E. Funk, who donated $1.25
million to the university for
the construction of the cen-
ter.
"This center highlights
textiles as the earliest tech-
nology of mankind," said

Carla Funk. "The collection
represents and reflects the
cultural diversity of the stu-
dent body on campus and
provides a cultural outlet for
students and the communi-
ty."
Ruth Funk, who originally
worked as an occupational
therapist and pursued tex-
tiles, art and sewing as hob-
bies, said her interest grew
after a trip to former
Yugoslavia.
"I was in Yugoslavia, and
was shocked that they were
selling off all of this beauti-
ful embroidery and the
young people had no inter-
est in it, no sense of inheri-
tance," Mrs. Funk said. "I
bought as much as I could
afford and bring back. I
thought, 'We just have to
save this.'"
In the interest of pursuing
her passion, Mrs. Funk

For the past five years, Jim
King of Palm Bay has made
frequent visits to the Inter-
change Square post office on
Malabar Road.
"It's more personal, you
know, when I mail out a pack-
age or buy my stamps," he
said. "I don't mind waiting in
line."
But by November, Mr. King
and hundreds of other cus-
tomers may have to look else-
where to meet their postal
needs as two Brevard County
post offices face potential

closure.
In addition to the Palm Bay
branch, at 1155 Malabar
Road N.E., the post office at
Patrick Air Force Base is also
on the chopping block.
The closings, which could
be upward of 700 throughout
the nation, is the next round
in tactics ensued by the Unit-
ed States Postal Service as a
way to account for an over-
whelming decline in mail vol-
ume within the past two
years.

This includes teen foot-

Libraries may feel

sting of proposed cuts

By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
As patronage surges, the
Brevard County Library Sys-
tem may be forced to make
drastic cuts to its workforce
and collection if proposed
county budget cuts are
approved.
"This is our third year of
budget cuts at approximately
$2 million per year for our
media budget," said Cather-
ine Schweinsberg, director of
Brevard County Libraries.
"That means we won't have as
many copies of bestsellers, we
have to judiciously choose
what's going to be on the shelf
per customer needs and we
don't buy a book simply
because a patron asks for it
anymore."

Even worse, the system
may be forced to eliminate
positions through attrition,
layoffs and leaves through the
county's voluntary separation
incentive program, Ms.
Schweinsberg said.
Approximately 37 full-time
and 39 part-time positions,
and more than $5 million in
funding countywide, are in
jeopardy if proposed budget
cuts pass. This also means
libraries will have to cut hours
across the board.
"With the amount of
money we've had to cut, we're
going to add to the unem-
ployment figures," Ms.
Schweinsberg said.
Brevard County operates 17
libraries countywide with sys-

other media.
Attendance has been high-
er recently, Ms. Schweinsberg
said, in large part due to the
declining economy. Many
patrons have shut off their
cable and home Internet con-
nections to save money.
Ms. Schweinsberg said she's
seen library attendance surge
in the past in poor economic
climates, but these proposed
budget cuts are unprecedent-
ed.
"Historically, as the econo-
my declines, public library
usage increases because peo-

the agency to look for alterna-

said Gary Sawtelle, USPS

ple don't have the discre-
tionary income they used to,"
she said. "This is a unique
time in our history here. All of
the problems have led to the
county not having the rev-
enue and we have to make
those cuts."
However, thanks to the
work of various "Friends of
the Library" organizations
and the tireless work of volun-
teers, Brevard County's
libraries have been tenuously
keeping their heads above
water.
"We look to our Friends
groups to help supplement
(the budget)," Ms. Schweins-
berg said. "They're extremely
supportive."
Last year, 660 volunteers
donated 62,800 hours, the
equivalent of 30 full-time
positions.

trict.
During its 2008 fiscal year,
the postal service saw a loss in
mail volume of 9.5 billion
pieces, or 4.5 percent, from
the year prior, Mr. Sawtelle
said. By the end of this fiscal
year, the loss is projected to
be as much as 27 billion
pieces.

The agency, which receives
no tax dollars for its opera-
tions and relies primarily on
postage for revenue, faces a
potential shortfall of $7 bil-
lion this year, Mr. Sawtelle
said.
This loss comes despite
cutbacks in staff, merged car-
rier routes and a 2-cent
increase in the cost of stamps
this May.
"We're in serious shape
right now," Mr. Sawtelle said.
"This is one of the things
we're trying to do to control
our shortfall and drive the
cost out of our system in
order to survive."
Rather than closures, the
agency is using the term
"consolidation," by only con-
sidering offices in close prox-
imity to other branches,
allowing customers to have
alternate access sites for
postal services.
Each office will be evaluat-
ed on a case-by-case basis,
taking into account factors
such as service standards,
cost savings, customer
access, real estate values,
employee impact and long-
term needs of the agency.
"We're very early in the
evaluation process," Mr.
Sawtelle said. "It will be at
least 30 to 60 days before any
offices are selected as candi-
dates from the list."
Once the offices are identi-
fied, customers will be noti-
fied and will have an oppor-
tunity to address comments
and concerns.

Volunteers remove crab traps

By Jennifer Nessmith
stahl@hometownnewsol.com
When crab fisherman
abandon or lose traps in the
Indian River Lagoon and
make no attempt to recover
or retrieve them, it makes
local environmentalists and
officials with the Florida Fish
and Wildlife Conservation
Commission a little "crabby."
That's why officials with
FWC implemented a derelict
blue crab trap cleanup pro-
gram, halting the blue crab
season from Aug. 10-19 in an
effort to locate and retrieve
abandoned traps more than
400 crab traps last weekend.
There are an estimated
15,000 traps a year placed in
Brevard County's waters,
with an approximate loss
rate of 10 percent, and two-
year trap longevity, said
Chris Koeppel, an environ-
mental specialist with Bre-
vard County's Office of Nat-
ural Resources
Management.
But actually, officials really
have no idea how many
derelict traps could be lan-
guishing in local waters,
incarcerating animals that
will not be harvested for food.
"Recreational fisherman

who have a saltwater fishing
license can have up to five
traps per person," Mr. Koep-
pel said. "Therefore, anybody,
basically, can put in traps."
Florida Fish and Wildlife
officials gave commercial and
recreational blue crab fisher-
man notice to remove their
traps during the 10-day
mandatory season closure.
Subsequently, any remaining
traps were considered
derelict, and were targeted for
removal when officials made
flyovers earlier this week in an
effort to identify the locations
of underwater traps, which
were then tagged with global
positioning system coordi-
nates.
Volunteers with boats and
boat hooks for trap removal
then went to those locations
to remove the traps.
Traps are lost and aban-
doned for several reasons, Mr.
Koeppel said, many of which
are no fault of the fisherman's.
"Fisherman lose between 5
and 10 percent of traps a year
based on weather, boating,
freshwater influx or high wind
events," he said. "But the traps
can continue to fish for one to
two years, incarcerating fish,
crabs and even diamond back
terrapins, a breed of aquatic

turtle."
Additionally, marine mam-
mals, such as manatees, have
been known to become
entangled in crab trap lines.
In fact, Brevard County is one
of the worst areas in the state
for marine mammal entan-
glement, Mr. Koeppel said.
The abandoned traps,
which can weigh between 30
and 70 pounds, are also a haz-
ard to boaters.
"They're quite heavy and
can stop a small boat if hit,
bending the prop or damag-
ing the craft," Mr. Koeppel
said.
The 10-day operation was
facilitated entirely through
volunteers, including the
Coastal Conservation Associ-
ation.
Six regional, 10-day blue
crab trap closures take place
in Florida at different times
during the year.
For more information
regarding the FWC's trap-
retrieval program, blue crab
trap closure dates, regulations
and how you can participate
in a cleanup event, call trap-
retrieval coordinator Kyle
Miller at (850) 487-0554 or

Crime
From page Al
Claycomb, acting command-
er of the Melbourne Police
Department.
While community leaders
often have asked police to
help reduce crime in this area,
Cmdr. Claycomb said some
residents who live there do
not feel comfortable in pro-
viding police with tips on
criminal suspects.
Officials said the proposed
agreement aims to end a
long-standing jurisdictional
problem that criminals have
used to evade police.
The agreement would allow
police to "actively patrol prob-
lem areas, conduct traffic
stops, stop suspicious people
and do field interviews with-
out involving the other

agency," Cmdr. Claycomb
said.
"Right now, if I see you run a
stop sign (outside myjurisdic-
tion), I can't stop you. Under
the agreement, I could make
that traffic stop," he said. "It
will allow us to patrol over
that (border) line. The line will
basically disappear, so we can
be not just reactive, but
proactive."
According to the agree-
ment, "For more than two
decades, narcotics and vio-
lent persons crimes have
been specifically identified"
in the border area. "Com-
mand, investigative and uni-
form staff of both (police
departments) have statistical
evidence of an unusually high
rate of victimization of violent
crime, to include the use of
firearms and homicides of
juveniles and young adults."
The state attorney's office is

willing to support prosecu-
tions of arrests made under
the proposed agreement,
Palm Bay city manager Lee
Feldman said in an Aug. 6
memo to the Palm Bay City
Council.
The agreement does have
limitations. For example, it
"does not allow for independ-
ent investigations or special
details into the other agency's
jurisdiction without joint
operational pre-planning,"
Mr. Feldman said.
The Palm Bay City Council
gave initial approval of the
agreement Aug. 6, and the
Melbourne City Council
could consider it at its Aug. 25
meeting.
If approved, the agreement
would stay in effect for a trial
period of 180 days, or six
months. It could later be
extended or made perma-
nent, Cmdr. Claycomb said.

"For healthy adults 45 and
younger, pick a point six
weeks from now where you'd

line and ramp it up slowly," he
said.
For those 65 and older, Dr.
Thomas advises patients to
see their physicians before
undertaking an exercise rou-

If you do suffer an injury,
don't soldier on. Stop the
activity, Dr. Thomas said.
"What I see is people who
come in six to eight weeks
after (the original injury
occurs), with a more severe

injury, one that may be in
need of surgery," he said.
Dr. Thomas suggests apply-
ing ice to the affected area,
elevating it higher than your
heart, and taking a few days to
rest. If the injured area still
hurts after three days, see
your doctor.
And seeing your doctor
doesn't necessarily mean
you'll have to give up the
activity.
"Primary care, unlike the
old school (of thought) where
if your knees hurt, you don't
run, is that we want people to
be able to do what they love
whether it's modifying the

Dr. Thomas also uses the
Flector patch in treatment, a
prescription pain relief patch
that contains a non-steroidal

anti-inflammatory medica-

Dr. Thomas has quite a bit
of experience working with
injured, high-level athletes.
He's a medical director for the
Ladies Professional Golf Asso-

of the U.S. Olympic Commit-

Dr. Thomas suggests that ath-

Hurricane media frenzy

Once again, we are entering the peak of the hurricane
season. And once again, the minute something forms in
the tropics, the Orlando weather guys and gals get excited.
Do they really want us to have a hurricane to prop up their
respective station's ratings? It makes you wonder at times
if they really do. Not me. I don't want to live without elec-
tricity for two weeks in the 90-degree heat, drink Kool-Aid,
have a breakfast of Pop-Tarts, and a dinner of canned ravi-
oli or tuna. If the weather people who work in Florida get
so bored with our May-September summer weather of hot
and humid and daily chances of thunderstorms, go to
another market.

Public education needs change

Searching in the roots of our system to find the core val-
ues that we need to return to, I want to point to the public
education system as the prime violator of our freedoms.
The success of our nation has been its system of organi-
zation, by which quite ordinary people can achieve
extraordinary things.
Ordinary people anywhere and everywhere in the world
are perpetuating their cultures by indoctrinating each
succeeding generation to carry on as their previous gener-
ations have carried on.
Not so with public education in America, where the
process has a built-in bias that has been very active for 100
years or more. Call it the Charles and Mary Beard effect, as
they re-wrote our history. Call it the WoodrowWilson pro-
gressive consolidation effect. As he sought to Nazi-fy our
people. Or simply call it the public, or government, educa-
tion effect by which we imprison our children 185 days per
year from kindergarten through 12th grade.
This lock-step learning environment is antithetical to
learning to be free, creative, religiously humble and indi-
vidually responsible persons.
This system started out 400 years ago in the colonies as
expedient education that employed whatever facilities
were available. It was driven by the desire for literacy and
business competency. Its variety of facilities included uses
of local governments to organize school units.
Hundreds of years later, experience has shown that gov-
ernments not only compete, but run everybody else out of
the competition.
There is no point in engaging in rancor or placing
blame. There is a point in looking for the solution, which is
to re-organize the education system to serve people as it
should.
We have a nation of 300 million, all of whom should be
sharing in the equal opportunities available in the nation's
private sector. There really is no other productive sector
than the one equal opportunity sector we all should be
depending upon.
Entrance into the "public sector" is by public election to
public office for the purpose of protecting and governing
all the 300 million people. Elected officials employ tax
supported personnel to do whatever is necessary to keep
us safe and governed.
All other of the 300 million belong in the private sector
where they work out their livelihoods on an equal basis
with each other. No able-bodied person should feel enti-
tled to freeload on the tax payments of his fellow workers
in the private sector.
But, back to the teacher/indoctrinators of our children.
Put yourself in their places as feeders at the public trough,
and you will find that you are not very comfortable with
taxing parents instead of collecting your wages as others
must do. This leads to the many outright vicious and suc-
cessful activities of teacher union bosses working to con-
trol elections. It has led to the elections of Carter, Clinton,
Bush, and Obama, all big proponents of nationalized
childhood education.
Conclusion: Any politician who does not understand
how this public education cancer is killing American free-
doms is unfit for public office. Few politicians survive
teacher union scrutiny, and get re-elected to public office
without the label, "friend of public education."
Our national government today is dominated by those
"friends." It is chilling but true that all other election
issues are secondary, among Democrats particularly.

Rationing is radical and borderline insane

Dear Editor,

I have read a good portion of the Obama health/insur-
ance program. Much of it is full of legalese and is incom-
prehensible.
However, I was able to understand that the silent
centerpiece of his program is his plan to ration health
care, giving it to some and denying it to others.
Rationing health care is the only thing that makes his
program possible. Seniors, in particular, will be hardest
hit by this rationing. Some government bureaucrat will
decide if you get an MRI, cat scan, knee or hip replace-
ment or heart stint, etc. I do believe his administration's
strategy to pass sweeping health care legislation reform
rested on stealth and speed, without showing the public
how the plan would actually work or what it would cost.
Thank God, this didn't pass as quickly by our well-paid
legislators as they have passed the massively expensive
stimulus bill and the equally expensive and totally
unnecessary TARP legislation, which none of congress-
men/women read before voting on these excessive
spending bills. Cap-and-Trade is another trillion dollar
bill which has not been "rubber stamped" yet and I hope
Congress will not pass that costly, unnecessary and
dangerous experiment either, but that's discussion for
another day. People should be aware what is in these
bills. They are pork-laden and horrible.
This health care bill expands Medicaid coverage for
poorer folks, which will add millions a year in new state
spending, which will have to come from somewhere.
In South Dakota, a state with low population, they
estimate it will add $45 million a year in new state
spending. That will mean the taxpayers of that state will
have to cough up more taxes. This bill more is all about
more government control of every aspect of our lives.
Do you realize that today is the first day this year that
you get to keep what you have earned. Up until today,
Aug. 12, you have been working for the govt. by the
amount of taxes we have to pay already. Ask any working
person if they would like to work longer for the govern-
ment?
To me, healthcare is not a "left" or "right" issue, but I
have read much of the Republicans' plan, as well, and I
like the way they have allowed small businesses to band
together to buy affordable health insurance for their
employees. Their plan protects doctors and hospitals
from frivolous lawsuits, encourages wellness and pre-
vention programs proved to cut costs and give people
who buy their own insurance the same tax breaks as
those who get insurance through their employers. They
would not add over 1,000 pages of additional complexity
such as multitudes of employer mandates, individual
mandates, insurance company mandates, allocation
formulas, political payoffs and a myriad other conjured
regulations and interventions with the cockeyed promise
that this massive concoction will lower costs.
This radical idea borders insanity. It creates a Rube
Goldberg system that simply multiplies the current
inefficiencies and arbitrariness, thus producing stagger-
ing deficits with less choice and lower-quality care.
The Obama Administration's defense is to accuse
critics of being for the status quo; nonsense. A host of
Republicans have offered alternatives for the costs of
healthcare and other aspects of our present system,
which we all agree should be improved upon.
Please call our congressmen and women in both
House and Senate and urge them to work on stripping
away the current inefficiencies before remaking one-
sixth of the U.S. economy. You must call and write letters
this month. The blue-dog Democrats gave us this month
of August and it is already half-gone. The Congressional
Democrats don't have the courage to do the right thing
and hold town hall meetings with the people who are
paying their salaries and who voted them in office. So, it's
imperative to contact their offices. Calling the district
offices is easier than calling their Washington office;
where their voice mail boxes are "conveniently" full.
What a con job they are giving us! Even though Mel
Martinez is a "lame duck", he still may have the opportu-
nity to vote for/against this bill.
Let's hope any congressperson who wants to be re-
elected votes against it, or they can count their days until
they are kicked out of their cushy well-paid positions of
authority and adolation. That includes the best health
care coverage in the world.
The Republican plan is so simple it only has three
parts: Radical tort reform and radically sever the link
between health insurance and employment. Also, do not
cover people who are not paying taxes and are not legal

citizens of America.
This seems so simple to me, that I cannot understand
why these concepts are not being considered.
Defensive medicine wastes more than $200 billion a
year. Just half of that could provide a $5,000 health
insurance grant to the uninsured poor, U.S. citizens
ineligible for other government health assistance.
I think the entire medical-malpractice system should
be abolished. A new social pool from which people
insured in medical errors or accidents can draw and
adjudication would be done by medical experts, not lay
juries giving away lottery prizes at the behest of smooth-
talking lawyers like John Edwards, who pockets a third of
the proceeds.
Folks like Al Gore will be doing extremely well finan-
cially if Cap-and-Trade tax passes as well, which is
another totally unnecessary bill.
Right now, the health care benefit exemption is the
largest tax break in the entire U.S. budget, costing the
government a quarter-trillion dollars annually. It hinders
health-insurance security and portability as well as
personal independence. If we additionally eliminated
the prohibition on buying personal health insurance
across state lines, that would inject new and powerful
competition that would lower costs for everyone.
I know about the Democratic party's indebtedness to
the trial lawyers, which has unfortunately taken mal-
practice reform totally off the table. But it's time they
look at what is good for America, not just where their
money is coming from.
I wish our legislators would take the Reagan route:
offer sensible, simple, yet radical reform that strips away
inefficiencies from the existing system before adding
Obama's new ones that are arbitrary, politically driven,
structural inventions whose consequence is certain
financial ruin for America and lead to rationing and
bureaucracy worse than anything we have ever known.

Sincerely,

Alice Kreitz

More fuel and repairs required with ethanol

Dear Editor:

Our government made a decision to phase out
regular gasoline and replace it with gasoline contain-
ing ethanol. At this time, there is 10 percent ethanol in
almost every gallon of fuel we purchase.
I keep a record book on my vehicle's mileage and
maintenance and have shown a drop of 4-6 miles per
gallon since using ethanol. Now I must buy four tanks
of ethanol fuel to go the same distance I could travel
on three tanks of regular non-ethanol fuel.
That's a lot more money out of my pocket each
month. The Congress and Senate are now pushing for
15 percent ethanol gasoline for our country. That will
cause us to get an additional 7-9 miles per gallon less
than the current 10 percent ethanol fuel we must buy.
That means a total of 11-15 miles per gallon less than
we were getting with regular fuel or two tanks of fuel to
go the same distance as one tank of regular fuel took us
before the government decided what was best for us.
Now I read that our gas stations are facing additional
costs to them of up to $300,000 in order to install new
lined gasoline tanks since the ethanol in the gasoline is
so corrosive that it eats through their tanks that held
regular fuel for years. How can a small business afford
that kind of added expense and stay in business? How
can any small business that uses any type of equip-
ment requiring gasoline not pass their additional fuel
and maintenance costs onto the consumers, meaning
us?
I haven't even mentioned the added maintenance
expense to each motorist for repairs due to ethanol
attacking any and all rubber seals and gaskets in our
engines and fuel lines or the devastating effect the
corrosive ethanol has on our boat motors, lawnmow-
ers, lawn equipment, generators, and anything we own
that requires gasoline.
I only wish that "We, the people," could have had
some input before having this ethanol decision made
for us in Washington, DC. But then again, if I had all my
expenses covered for me by my employer, this ethanol
decision would not affect me in any way. Wait a
minute, as a taxpayer, I am the employer.

Nellie Kokin's Tailoring

tailoring, great service

By Jennifer Nessmith

When customers walk in
to the tiny, bustling tailor
shop tucked at the end of a
small plaza on the corner of
Wickham and Aurora roads,
the proprietor comes
around the counter to wel-
come nearly every one of
them with a warm, familiar
greeting.
She knows almost every
one by name, and takes a
moment to ask after their
husbands, children and per-
sonal lives before transact-
ing business.
And at 71 years old, Nellie
Kokin, who came to the U.S.
from Argentina to study tai-
loring as a young girl, still
works at least 12 hours a day,
in addition to raising money
for two local nonprofits and
volunteering her services at
area nursing homes.
"After all these years work-
ing with these people, they

Interactive

COCOA- It's OK to be a
bit spacey during a visit to
Brevard Community
College's Planetarium.
With exhibits illustrating
the fundamental physical
principles of our planet,
lessons on finding celestial
objects in the night sky
and laser light shows set to
rock music, it's hard not to.
"The hands-on exhibits
are really popular," said
Mark Howard, planetari-
um director. "Most people
learn best that way.When
you can actually make
something work and see it
in action, it makes an
impression."
Exhibits such as the
"Black Hole," in which a
dropped coin demon-
strates the infinite gravity
well created by a black
hole, or the Foucault
Pendulum, which swings
in accordance with the
rotation of the Earth, teach
visitors about the effects of
gravity and rotation.
Two new exhibits the
"Turntable" and "Gaussian
Melody," acquired with a
grant from the Florida
Department of State,
Division of Cultural Affairs
and the Florida Arts
Council and National
Endowment of Art, joined

the Planetarium in June.
The "Turntable" exhibit
demonstrates how
rotating objects behave,
giving visitors a look at
how planetary orbits work
and how weather patterns,
such as hurricanes, are
formed.
"A rotating body, like the
Earth, puts large-scale
circulation in motion,"
said Mr. Howard. "This
demonstrates the Coriolis
Effect (the spinning

motion of objects moving
on a rotating surface, such
as the Earth), which is
what causes hurricanes to
form."
Also joining the exhibit
is the "Gaussian Melody,"
which, by dropping small
metal balls through a
series of pins, gives a
physical representation of
a mathematical phenome-
non.
"It's a way of finding
patterns from a seemingly

random event," said Mr.
Howard.
While the balls seem to
fall through the pins
randomly, which creates a
tinkling melodious sound,
the majority tends to land
in the middle.
"It demonstrates the law
of averages, like a grading
bell curve," said Mr.
Howard.
After learning about
physical principles of the
Earth, visitors can turn
their eyes skyward to learn
about other planets of the
solar system.
The Planetarium offers
* shows ranging from an
introduction to the night
sky to shows about the
Cassini Mission of two
orbiters studying Saturn
and its moons.
Next month, the plane-
tarium will offer "More
than Meets the Eye," a
show that will teach
amateur astronomers to
find deep sky objects, such
as nebulas or star clusters,
with a pair of binoculars.
"There are more than
100 objects that are
actually pretty easy to find
with a pair of binoculars,"
said Mr. Howard.
Visitors can get a look at
the real night sky in the
observatory's three
telescopes.
Laser light shows
performed in the planetar-
ium are set to rock music.
This month, shows are set
to the music of the Beatles
and Led Zeppelin.

STAR SCOPES
James Tucker
Week of 8-21-2009
Aries-March 21-April 19
Aries has a multitude of
blessings right now. Why?
It's because you give so
much, the universe is
beginning to pour out
blessings in return. You are
a true messenger of hope.
You always give encour-
agement and understand-
ing. Also, your courage in
the face of challenge is one
of your greatest gifts.

Taurus-April 20-May 20
Finish old projects before
beginning new ones. Take
an inventory of old habits,
attitudes, events and things
no longer needed and let
them go. This makes room
for new growth in your life.
You can tell how well this
is working by your happi-
ness level. If you don't like
it, don't do it. Like attracts
like, you know.

Gemini-May 21-June 21
See, the lighter touch
works when you allow it.
Sometimes less is more.
Now is not the best time to
feel overloaded and
burned out. Patience is the
key to action. Wait until
you have a clear vision
before making changes.
This puts the odds of suc-
cess in your favor. Stay
focused on your dream and
success is yours.

Cancer-June 22-July 22
By nature, your heart rules
your head. When you start
a project and your heart is
in it, you will succeed. If
you are in doubt about an
idea, don't start it. Your
energy is strong right now.
Be sure to make a little
time each day for fun and
recharging. Hit the thrift
stores and put together a
new outfit. Now life is so
much fun.

Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
Your future is bright
because you plan for it in
the present then live it one
day at a time. You continue
to manifest your dreams
into realities. You know
your capabilities better
than anyone. Stay focused
on your top priorities.
When the work is done, it's
time to play. With this kind
of balance, life is so much
easier.

make your own final deci-
sions. Your time in the zodi-
ac is coming soon. It's time
to set daily, quarterly and
monthly goals for the com-
ing year. Write them down
and review them often. This
keeps you moving forward
rather than being side-
tracked on less important
things.

Libra-Sept. 23-Oct. 22
Yours is an adventuresome
life. You know what you
want and you know how to
get it. If others around you
don't know, tell them. This
keeps life running smoothly
because of better commu-
nications. As your life pro-
gresses, be sure to keep
releasing the old to prepare
for the new. This keeps life
in divine order.

Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
You are constantly giving
birth to new ideas. Your
heart and spirit work over-
time. You are the eternal
optimist. You never give up.
Your enthusiasm is conta-
gious to everyone around
you. You know so much
about life. Your dreams are
strong and accurate. Wow.
What a wonderful life you
have created.

Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Taking quality time each
day is very important for
your emotional well being.
If you don't make this time,
you will survive, but you
won't grow. Go to the
water once a week. Com-
mune with nature. You may
not fully realize the power
you truly have. Humanity,
more than earthly posses-
sions, is what makes you
truly happy.

Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Your accumulated wisdom
and experience continues
to propel you up to your
highest dreams. Your heart
is so open and full of love.
With this inner glow and
strength you are invincible.
There is no stopping you.
Your light will continue to
shine brightly. Life is good.
You have made it happen.
Great job.

Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb 18
Try looking at challenges
from a new viewpoint.
When unsure of a direction,
stop, step back, take a deep
breath and refocus. Ask for
advice from trusted friends
when needed. That's what
friends are for. Then contin-
ue on toward your dream.
You don't have to do every-
thing at once. Just put the
important ones first.

Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
Make decisions based on
hunches and instincts and
you always win. This is
what the universal spirit
and light is for. Stay in sync
with divine timing. It sim-
plifies life and keeps you at

of choices. Make wise
rather than hasty ones.

acre park, located at 755

cost you is gas in the car to
get there. The park features
plants and amenities that

stimulate not just sight, but

The park is made up of
several gardens, a pond,
benches, a walking trail
that circles the entire park,

"It's just a beautiful place
for people to come out and
enjoy," said Greg
Bartholomew, South Day-

director. "There really isn't
any other park like this in
our area."
The park is handicap

different sounds and signs

park located at 6250 Ridge-

Volusia County and it is
also free to the public.
Adjacent to the Spruce

area, its wild surroundings
are a perfect place to enjoy
a "back to nature" picnic. It
has numerous nature trails,
various types of vegetation
local to the area, a board-

Students, teachers, and
local and state govern-

WHO IS GRAND MASTER COOK? A

A Grand Master, that is a
Master of two or more styles
of martial art is a very rare
thing. Most martial artists
learn one style, and a num-
ber of those earn a Teacher
(a Sensei or a Shifu) rank in
that one style. Across my
38-year journey as a Kung Fu
practitioner, I have mastered
several styles of ancient
Chinese Kung Fu. These
styles range from the "soft
internal" to the "hard exter-
nal", from quite passive to
extremely aggressive. All the
styles I know are "classic",
dating from 900 to 2000
years in age. Being from this
time period of Chinese histo-
ry, these styles are all true
fighting systems (Wu Kung)
as opposed to the modern
"Opera School", "Form
Tournament" style of Kung
Fu (Wu Shu).
I had one primary
Master through whom I met
three other Masters. Each
was or is (two are deceased)
the highest ranking Master
of his style or styles in the
United States. This sets me

apart from the majority of
martial artists. For this I
count myself extremely for-
tunate. I was also educated
by these men in history, phi-
losophy, meditation, Qi
Gong, and medicine.
My number one goal as
instructor is to instill in my
students self confidence and
self-belief leading to self dis-
cipline. Once this is estab-
lished in the student this atti-
tude is carried over into
every other aspect of the stu-
dent's life. Ultimately, Kung
Fu is a philosophy of life that
constantly reinforces and
guides us to be the best per-
son we can be, always.
I have a long track
record of success with my
students. I am especially
proud of the students that
came to me as young teens
from broken homes and neg-
ative environments that dis-
covered their sense of self
worth through my teachings.
They learned through the
demands I placed upon them
and through recognition of
achievement, self-belief, and

self-confi-
dence
which led
to self-
discipline.
That self-
discipline
gave them
the inner
strength to
succeed at
achieving
life goals
they set for
themselves.
I served as
a powerful
figure by
my liv-
ing that
which I
teach. I
was to them a
mentor, a disciplinarian, and
a trusted councilor. I want
my students to be their best,
always. I want them to truly
know that by succeeding
under me by meeting the
demands I place upon them
both physically and mentally,
they can succeed at anything
they choose to do in life.
