Space Coast Early Intervention
Center has come up with a new
way for people to goof off at work.
The organization will host its
sixth annual Corporate Challenge
June 13.
The challenge is a day in which

teams can participate in physical
and mental challenges designed to
create a unique team-building
experience, said Shelley Johnson,
spokeswoman for Space Coast
Early Intervention Center.
This is one of the center's major
fundraisers. The proceeds from the
challenge will benefit the center
and its programs.
"For any business that has money
for bonding and team-building in
its budget, this is a great way to do
that," Ms. Johnson said.

cial needs. All the
children are inte-

Ms. Johnson
said the program
is advantageous
to both the typical
and special needs children.
"It's a benefit for the children
with special needs to be around the
role model children and it's a bene-
fit for the role model children to be
in a class with children with special
needs to find out that there are all
different types of people in the
world," Ms. Johnson said.

Selected to attend National Press
Conference to share her
near-death experience

By Tammy Roberts
Roberts@hometownnewsol.com
It was Easter Sunday in
2001 when the Dziadul fam-
ily attended an afternoon
brunch at a resort hotel in
Connecticut.
Colette and John Dziadul
filled their plates.with items
from the gourmet buffet,
while their 3-year-old
daughter, Dana a picky
eater at the time w sats-
fled with a few-servings of
cantaloupe.
The following day, Dana
complained of a-headache
and stomachache, but her
pediatrician determined
that it was just a virus.
Dana's symptoms pro-
gressed throughout the
week, leaving her with a
104-degree fever, severe
stomach cramping and
blood in her bowels.
After four days in the
emergency room, she
underwent several blood
tests, stool cultures and sur-
gical consults, but doctors
were still unable to diagnose
her condition. By the end of
the week, the fluids and
medication seemed to
improve her condition and
Dana was released from the
hospital, so long as her
symptoms were closely
monitored.
"I remember bringing her
home that night and my
husband had just put her to.
bed when the hospital
called," Mrs. Dziadul said.

"They told us that her lab
results determined that
Dana tested positive for Sal-
monella Poona. The organ-
ism had leaked into her
bloodstream, acting like a
poison. They wanted us to
bring her back immediate-
ly."
"That was a very long car
ride,, as we Wondered
whether our daughter was
going to live or die," Mrs.
Dziadulsaid.
-Salmonella Poona is an
organism that can cause
serious and sometimes fatal
infections in young chil-
dren, the elderly and those
with weakened immune
symptoms, according to the
Federal Drug Administra-
tion'sWeb site.
In rare cases such as
Dana's, the organism can
enter the bloodstream and
produce increased illness,
resulting in arterial infec-
tions, endocarditis- and
arthritis.
After five days of an
aggressive course of antibi-
otics, the Dziaduls were per-
mitted to bring their daugh-
ter home once again.
"Even though she was
home, it took a while before
Dana was back to being
Dana," Mrs. Dziadul said.
One week after Dana was
discharged, the Federal
Drug Administration
announced that an out-
break of food-borne illness

rock-climbing wall; trivia; a
giant jigsaw puzzle, measur-

year's more unusual events,
the smoothie relay, in which
participants are given a
recipe, a blender, a bucket of
ice, a table of groceries to
choose from and a limited
amount of time to make and
consume a blended smooth-
ie.
.Ms. Johnson said the Cor-

porate Challenge also incor-
porates a special needs cate-
gory competition, such as the
wheelchair race. In this event,
a person in a wheelchair calls
out directions to a blindfolded
runner, who attempts to
guide them both through an
obstacle course.
The whole idea is to
strengthen team bonds
through a series of challeng-

Company uses technology to send messages

By Sarah Stover Jacobs
For Hometown News
When schools need to
alert students about some-
thing, they use the public
address system.
When cities, counties or
other agencies want to alert
residents, they use radio
and television.
Now they can also use the
telephone.
Cities and corporations
have already started using a
new service offered by a
Florida company that
allows messages to be sent
to cell phones or land lines
simultaneously.
Hometown News has used
it to help with circulation
verification.
BirthCall is the latest
offering under the parent
company GlobalCall Enter-
prises- run by Naples resi-
dent Shawn Verne.
The company offers vari-
ous adaptations of a call
system that generates mul-
tiple simultaneous calls
from a list.
BirthCall allows new par-
ents to record a message
shortly after a baby is born
to let everyone know the
good news.
The BirthCall package,
which is $14.95, includes a
call list for up to 50 people
in the U.S. and Canada.
More can be added for a
small fee.
When it is time for the
birth, all parents have to do
is dial in, type in their user
identification information
and themessage.goes out.
The package includes
caller ID, so recipients know
who the call is coming from,
and it will leave a message
on voicemail or message
machine if they do not pick
up.
Mr. Verne spent the past
two years developing the
concept and this past year,
put into use.
As his other services
gained popularity, Mr. Verne
was asked about an option
for birth announcements.
He has three boys himself

and knows how hectic it can
be.
"It's a mania-like situation
having a kid," he said.
Although the service was
not available when she had
her baby, new mother Erica
King would have "some-
what taken advantage of it,"
she said.
Ms. King is the reception-
ist in Hometown News' Fort
Pierce office.
"It would've been helpful,
but I was really sick in the
hospital (from the anesthe-
sia), so I don't think it
would've have mattered
because I couldn't speak to.
anyone anyway. If I had
(had) a natural birth that
would've been good," said
Ms. King.
Area hospitals contacted
for comment were not
familiar with the product
yet. Martin .Memorial
Health Systems was unable
to comment "...as we don't
generally make product
endorsements," wrote Scott
Samples, public informa-
tion coordinator for MMHS.
Indian River Medical Cen-
ter could not really make a
comment either, as they
have not been given a pres-
entation or used the system,
but "overall, we think it's an
interesting concept," said
spokeswoman Betsy Wits-
man.
Companies: that have
seen presentation or are
familiar with it are enthusi-
astic.
"It's been pretty receptive
so far by companies we've
contacted," said Mr. Verne.
In fact, BirthCall already
has a working relationship
with a company that prints
birth announcements and
that company, as well as
others, have suggested Mr.
Verne branch into engage-
ment announcements as
well as job promotions or
moves, which might be
offered in the near future,
Mr. Verne said.
For now, parents-to-be
can sign-up for BirthCall or
it can be purchased as a gift.

Other calling functions
In addition to Birthcall, some of the other services offered by
GlobalCall Enterprises run by Naples resident ShawnVeme are
as follows:
MyPatientCall, which lets doctors' offices remind patients
of appointments.
Andrew Ress, a plastic surgeon in Boca Raton, has praise for
MyPatientCall. His office has used the program for about six
weeks, and while they are still getting used to it, Dr. Ress and his
staff have already heard positive feedback from patients.
MyCustomerCall; which allows retailers to remind a cus-
tomers about events or special offers.
MyFanCall, which is used by entertainers to send messages
to their fans.
Country singer Amber Leigh, the first entertainer to sign up
for MyFanCall, uses (561)'111-1111 as her caller ID, so her fans
all know the number, wrote Mr.Verne in an e-mail.
GlobalCall also has contracts with cities.
For instance, the city of Lauderdale's recreation department
uses its OneCallTellAll program.
The service is used by coaches to let parents know about
game cancellations or changes.
It hs also been used by Hometown News to notify newspa-
per carriers all at once when papers were in, rather than spend-
ing.time making numerous calls.
The phone messaging service was started as a way to spread
the word quickly in emergency situations, such as Sept. 11, said
Mr.Veme.
Cities have already found the service useful in emergency
scenarios, even though it has onlybeen around about year.
Key West's Police Department decided to try it and found it
effective when Hurricane Ike threatened the area last Septem-
ber.
David Smith of the professional standards division of the Key
West Police Department was impressed with the service and
penned this letter to Mr.Veme.
'After the storm passed, the police department held a
debriefing session to evaluate our performance during it. The
most resounding comment was regarding the emergency noti-
fication call system," Mr. Smith wrote.
"The EOC commander for the City of KeyWest, the City Man-
ager, Chief of Police and all of the personnel I spoke with
thought the system was extremely useful and informative...In
our discussions, it is cear this system is a valuable tool in mass
communication and can be used for a variety of incidents, to
include those that are weather related," he wrote.
-Sarah SfoverJacobs

Thanks to a fellow surfer

I wanted to put a rave in your paper.
I was admiring some surf boards at (a local eating establish-
ment) in Cocoa Beach a few months ago. They were being dis-
played by George Trossett. I have a nice long board and was
very interested in the stands he had made to display his
boards.
I called George and asked if he would make me a stand and
what the cost would be? George stated that he would make
the stand and we could discuss the price when done.
My wife and I picked up the stand from George and he
would not accept anything for it. He was just glad to help a fel-
low surf lover out.
This is part of the close knit community of Cocoa Beach and
the surrounding areas that I love.
Thanks George; you should know the stand is being used
and looking great.

Ban recaps on trucks

I want to write a rant about avoiding many tragic auto and
truck accidents along many major highways, such as Inter-
state 95; U.S. 1, A1A and the like.
As a retired federal government civilian employee truck
driver, (I was) taught the recommended following distance
from the vehicle in front of you was one car-length for every
10 mph you are driving, which would help avoid rear-end col-
lisions. Heavy-loaded trucks of all kinds should leave (longer)
distances. All drivers, but particularly truck drivers, should
always check thetires for excessive wear to avoid potential tire
blow-outs. Also, the truck drivers shouldn't use recap tires as
they cause highway (debris) along the highways and have
been cited as being the cause of many avoidable highway
(fatalities because) people were swerving to avoid the debris
andcrashed or overturned their cars.

: Open letter to Congress

You had shown me how you manage Social Security during
the .President Lyndon B.) Johnson administration by the
"found money." When are you going to pay back the IOUs that
"yo'iiigave for that money? You did not forget your pay raise
every year, did you? The first item in 2009 was to give your-
selves a raise.
With the economy the way it is, why do you need earmarks
or PORK to make you look good to your state? We do not need
lawyers in Washington, D.C. We need business managers. I
have never met'a lawyer (who) was ndt greedy and wanted all
they could get and would do anything to get it all. Lawyers are
usually paid much more than they are worth.
How much better off would America be if the Democrats
had spent half as much energy on improving America (as)
they spent on the "Hate Bush" campaign?
Why are we trying to save terrorists when they only want to
kill the Americans? I thought the Supreme Court was to (adju-
dicate) items pertaining to the Constitution, not to make new
laws as they see fit. (The job ofl Congress is to make laws for
the majority of American citizens, notthe minority.
How can a few (people) make such a difference when the
American way is to support the majority and not the minori-
ty?

Clean up after dogs

I have a.neighbor who comes over with two dogs on a daily
basis and they go to the bathroom in my front yard. These are
two large dogs. 1 have even gone so far as to put a sign in the
yard. Evidently, this has not worked. She is still bringing her
animals over to my yard. I know I could probably contact the
sheriff's office to do something, but I want the community to
know that it would be nice to think of others in your commu-
nity when you take your dogs to the bathroom. Clean up after
your animals.

Don't want to hear it

I'd like tp respond to the person who wrote "What has been
accomplished?"
I can tell what his political party is by what he, wrote. I think
people have the right to express themselves. If you will notice,
the people in the tea party were not belligerent and were well-
behaved. Of all the thousands who participated, there was

Former commissioner responds to recent rants

To the editor;
I enjoy an exchange of
ideas but when a fool calls
me a liar or makes other
outrageous comments I am
compelled to respond.
In last week's anonymous
rant the writer claims I lied
about being a politician,
DDT is not harmful, I know
more than "all the world's
experts" regarding global
pollution and global warm-
ing, and that I should watch
CNN and the Discovery
channel so I can be appar-
ently enlightened.
Absolute nonsense and
sheer fabrication would be
my short and sweet
response. But this retort
requires more than brevity.
One of the skills I learned
when I was earning my
doctorate was fact finding
through arduous research
and applying the.facts to a
variety of well-documented
graduate level papers.
Anyone who knows me
knows I do not pander or
politicize and continuously

voted my conviction based
upon fact. I was not inter-
ested in appeasing the
masses in order to win re-
election. During my tenure
as county commissioner, I
was dedicated to fact and
applying it appropriately.
The ranter's claim that I
"ordered the taxpayers to
pay $6 million too much for
a piece of duthping proper-
ty" is either ignorance or
stupidity.
Perhaps the rant writer is
thinking of the Sarno Road
property which happened
prior to my election to the
county commission and
which I opposed during my
campaign. Additionally, I
would not have supported
this purchase for a number
of reasons including price,
utility and appraisal
methodology, let alone that
the purchase happened
under questionable cir-
cumstances.
As for DDT, it is not
harmful to humans. The

'only one arrest made.
I didn't hear comments like his when all the other demon-
strations took place, like the Hispanic demonstration in Los
Angeles where they were waving Mexican flags. I didn't hear
anyone complain about them not being able to name their
political representatives. Most of them could not even speak
English.
So I don't want to hear what you have to say about this issue.

Live and let live

I'm calling in reference to "A note on prayer" and "Wayne is
tops."
. Let's all grow up,,people. The Rants are here for everybody's
opinions and feelings. But can we stop with the homosexuali-
ty and metrosexuality? Everyone is entitled to their own opin-
ion and lifestyle. If they're not bothering you, leave them
alone.

Unify

This is in response to the person who wrote about the tea
party and what it has accomplished. I am not an official
spokesperson for the tea party, but what I can say is that it is
unifying Americans. That is what we need right now. We need
to unify against these corrupt corporations and bankers trying
to run our counfitry.

This and that

Rave:
I don't mind the smaller print, whatever it takes to fit the
rants in is fine. Ilove that section of the paper. You can't please
everyone, and someone will always complain. So to those
whiners: get a magnifier. You don't even pay for the paper any-
way.
Rant:
I think the "Miss Latina of Brevard Pageant" is ridiculous.
Why can't we just stick to one pageant called Miss Brevard. Or
if we are going to categorize the pageants and the participants,-
then there should be a "Miss White of Brevard," too. It's only
fair that way.

Political theory

I am impressed'with Sheila Blair, who heads up the Federal
Depository Insurance Corporation, in her answering of ques-
tions of the financial situation that we can understand.
I am not impressed with Henry Paulsen (former Secretary of
the Treasury), Larry Summers (director of National Economic
Council), and Timothy Geithner (Sec. of the Treasury), who
have been given the title of experts to fix our economy. They
remind me f the 1930 comedians Curly, Larry and Moe, who
would take a job and produce greater damage and never fixed
the problem.

DDT hysteria got its start
when a radical environ-
mentalist initiated a cam-
paign based upon personal
biases reminds me of Al
Gore. The world's scientific
community has now recog-
nized that banning DDT
was a foolish decision. Mil-
lions of people in third
world countries have paid
with their lives for our egre-
gious mistake. This hap-
pened because we allowed
environmental extremists
to influence our scientific
and governmental commu-
nity.
Regarding the ranter's
claim that "he knows more
than all the world's experts
on earth research -and
refutes their scientific find-
ings on global warming,"
this clearly demonstrates
the writer, doesn't have a
clue about what the world's
experts are saying. Appar-
ently our rant writer spends
too much time watching
biased programs and not

evaluating facts from the
world's scientific commu-
nity.
The rant ends with a sug-
gestion to watch the televi-
sion stations CNN or Dis-
covery for the apparent
truth of global pollution. I
do watch Discovery and
find it entertaining but not
entirely believable. It tends
to spin a story like Disney.
On the other hand, watch-
ing CNN falls in line with
MSNBC liberal program-
ming for the "feel-good we
did it to ourselves" genera-
tion.
If its silly commentary
you want, I'd suggest you
continue your choice of
news channels' or watch a
cartoon show. It's much the
same.
And if ignorance is bliss,
then you must be one
happy camper.
Ron Pritchard
Former Brevard County
commissioner

My qualification and experience is as a business consultant
and accountant for 53 years, but I am no expert. I have seen
my clients become millionaires and others, who started a
business and failed.
A business fails by not having a plan, good management
and oversight of your operations. If you lack those three prin-
ciples, you risk the chance of failing. Individuals who have
succeeded, at times, spent 60, 80 or more hours in a given
week paying attention to their business.
The reason government programs don't succeed in solving
or addressing problems is because those in the responsible
position fear losing their job if the problems are solved or
reduced. Incompetence is built into the government systems.
It's difficult to fire an unproductive employee. Recommenda-
tion by government employees to their superiors to improve
efficiency or to solve a problem are many times placed in the
inactive file.
Business operations have the incentive to solve a problem
and then move on to address the next problem.
This economy will not turn around by the federal govern-
ment by giving our money to states, counties, local govern-
ment and agencies that don't pay taxes. Comments from
elected officials say we, as individuals, will spend the money
the wrong way. I say you, the government, are spending our
money the wrong way.
The economy will turn around by active business, investors
and you, as an individual, being responsible in how you spend
and handle your financial situation. This is how, in the past,
we turned this nation's economy back to prosperity.
We need to begin to increase the wealth in this country,
which has decreased around 50 percent since the second
quarter of 2007. tackle the deficit that has been created by the
previous and current administration. We need to increase
wealth. Recent data by the Internal Revenue Service indicates
a 25 percent decrease of income tax revenue has been
received. This is the result of a decrease of income sources and
wealth.

Get rid of Democrats

Between the Democratic House and Senate, the Democrats
have the majority. Along with President Obama, they have put
this wonderful country into bankruptcy. People have lost their
jobs, their homes and thousands of dollars in the stock mar-
ket. To me it was a Democratic conspiracy. Gasoline rose to $4
a gallon. The Democrats told mortgage companies and banks
to give mortgages to people without verifying their income.
Now (President) Obama is in the process of taking over Gen-
eral Motors and Chrysler, hopefully, Ford (Motor Company)
can make it on their own in the pretense that taxpayers own
these companies and we will make money from them. What a
joke.
People are losing their jobs and there are no jobs out there
to replace them. Has anybody thought of impeaching the
president and getting rid of the members of Congress before
they totally destroy any more than they have?

Produce
From page Al
associated with cantaloupe
had caused numerous deaths
and. illnesses throughout 14
states.
"Until Dana became ill, I
never washed my cantaloupe
rinds before slicing them up; I
never thought that it mat-
tered," said Mrs. Dziadul, a
Viera resident. "Today, every
piece of fruit or vegetable in
our home never goes without
being washed once, if not
twice."
At 11 years old, Dana is now
a fifth-grader at Holy Trinity
Episcopal Academy in Mel-
bourne and an advocate for
safe produce standards.
While otherwise healthy,
Dana has suffered from
chronic joint pain for the past
four years, which, although it
has not been confirmed, her
family believes is a side effect
of her food-borne illness.
As a ballet dancer and
member of her school's swim-
ming and track teams, Dana's
joint problems have impacted
her ability to participate in
these activities.
As a result of her personal
experience with food-bornme

illness, Dana was selected to
attend a National Press Con-
ference in Washington D.C.,
April 28-29 to tell her story to
various media outlets and
members of the U.S. Con-
gress.
Dana was chosen to repre-
sent both Connecticut and
Florida during the all-expens-
es paid trip by request of Con-
gresswoman Rosa DeLauro,
D-CT, chairwoman of the
House subcommittee on agri-
culture, 'rural development,
Food and Drug Administra-
tion and related agencies.
"These victims, their fami-
lies and their stories must
serve as the final wakeup call,"
Congresswoman DeLauro
said during the press confer-.
ence. "We must act now to
make it happen, transform
the FDA and begin a new
movement that puts the pub-
lic health first."
While in the nation's capital,
'Dana and her mother joined
20 other victims of food-
borne illness and their fami-
lies for the event, as a way to
encourage legislators to pass
several bills that would better
protect the public against this
type of illness.
One piece of legislation,
presented by Congress-
woman DeLauro, would

require that all produce
imported from foreign coun-
tries have the same safety
requirements as in the United-
States.
The cantaloupe that Dana
got sick from, the Dziaduls
later learned, was imported
from Mexico.
During the press confer-
ence, Dana told her story to
members of the Associated
Press, Reuters and CNN, as
well as a dozens of staff repre-
sentatives.
Othervictims offood-borne
illness addressed the media,
as well as the families of vic-
tims, who died from consum-
ing certain types of peanuts,
orange juice and spinach.
During the next four hours,
the Dziaduls met briefly with
different U.S. Senators and
Representatives, telling
Dana's story and encouraging
them to vote in favor of the
legislation.
"It was like a whirlwind,"
Mrs. Dziadul said. "We were
literally running back and
forth from the Capitol build-
ing, stopping to talk to differ-
ent legislators before they
went in to vote."
While she said that her
entire experience in D.C. was
.something she'd never forget,
Dana was most excited about

meeting so many Congress
members.
"Everyone was very nice
and listened to what I had to
say," Dana said. "(Congress-
woman DeLauro) gave me a
hug and a kiss and thanked us
for coming. I also met another
girl my age, who got E. Coli
poisoning from eating
spinach. She almost died
from it"
In addition to members of
the U.S. Congress, Dana also
shared her story with her
classmates at Holy Tinity, fol-
lowing her trip.
"I want other people to
know about what I went
through, so they won't get
sick, too," Dana said.
As they await the passing of
these bills, the Dziaduls plan
to spend most of their sum-
mer traveling throughout
Florida to speak with different
legislators and organizations
about the importance of pro-
duce safety.
"It's all about educating
others about prevention and
safety," Mrs. Dziadul said. "As
a parent, you're excited when
your child eats healthy-never
thinking that eating healthy
food could almost lead to
their death. It changes your
life."

insurance), which can be
qdite substantial,". Mr.
McManis said.
His booth will feature
some of the most popular
, hurricane' protection prod-
ucts as well as product

demonstrations.
Mr. McManis said he
would also be dispelling
some hurricane protection
product myths. -
"Most of the people (who
visit my displays) have not
qualified how much shut-
ters or improvements cost,"
he said. "I ask questions to
try to see what will work for
them and give them an esti-
mate. Most people think the
shutters cost a -lot more
than they actually do."
Other guests at the expo
include Charlie Roberts of

the Brevard County Office
of Emergency Management,
who will give a presentation
on preparedness and Flori-
da's Blood Centers, which
will solicit blood donations
from 11 a.m. to 4p.m.
Participants'will also have

S ome of my friends have
described the tropical
nights, the balmy breezes
andidyllic lifestyle to me.
One of them even moved
there shortly after vacation-
ing on Hawaiian shores.
Since I won't fly in an
airplane, it's doubtful thatI
will ever visit our 50th state.
With that in mind, it is easy
to see why I have a special
interest in mainland luaus.
A luau I attended recently
took place to raise funds for
Brevard County Sea of
Dreams, a nonprofit group
dedicated to promote beach
swimming safety. Founded
by Randy Smith- in honor of
his friend Fred Hunt Jr., who
drowned after saving the life
of mystery novelist Maureen
Jennings Sea of Dreams
offered free admission to the
shindig at the Elks Lodge in
Cocoa Beach. A luncheon
feast was offered at a
reasonable price and a long
table greeted entering
visitors with all kinds of
beach and luau regalia,
including leis and grass
skirts, of course.
Showtime Entertainment
entertained party-goers with
the sultryvoice oflead
singer Toniand backup
singer Beth. Attired in hula
skirts, bikini tops and leis,
the women'added to the -
Hawaiian atmosphere. Their
leader, Robbie,looked like
the Captain from Captain
and Tenille in a tropical shirt
and boater's cap, while
keeping his singers' vocals
on course with his technical
expertise.
To get involved or to learn
more about the Sea of
Dreams, visit wu w.seaof-
dreamsinc.org.
The day before the luau, I
sauntered onto the site of
ClowningAround in the Park
atWickham Park, where I
observed children lined up
waiting to tell the balloon- -
animal maker what animal
theywanted.
Clowns were seated with
the children at tables,
helping them with coloring
and crafts, up close and
personal.
Now, I'am of the old
school, where children sat
quietly in their seats,
watching clowns perform
their antics on a stage area,

Enjoy take out at the Brevard Art Museum

By Jenet Krol
Krol@hometownnewsol.com
Artists participating in
the latest exhibit at the
Brevard Art Museum were
challenged to think out-
side the box a take-out
box.
In a. nationwide call to
artists, Jackie Broysanyi,
museum curator, mailed
hundreds of blank, pint-
sized Chinese take-out
containers, with the only
guideline being that the
artists must use the box in
their,works.
What the museum got
back was 201 unique
pieces of art.
"This is definitely one of
the most creative shows
we've had," said Jose Mar-
quez, museum registrar.
"It brought out the creativ-
ity of beginners and ama-
teurs, to those who have
had major exhibits before."
Responses came from all
over the country, from
Maryland to California, as.
well as one international.
entry from Australia.:
From containers con-
verted into armadillos and
dragons, to those made to
look like rickshaws, such
as "The Crumby Caterer"
which features a mouse
pulling a rickshaw filled
with a take-out order of
sweets. No two pieces are
alike.
"Some (artists) hit on the
icon of what the container
is with food or with an
Asian theme and some just
came out of left field."
One creation titled
"Humane Lo Mein" fea-

tures a chicken eating
some human lo mein, in a
play on the idea of take-
out food.
Some boxes were paint-
ed, some were taken apart
and reassembled to make a
bouquet of flowers while
some are incorporated
into a collages.
One interactive piece,
"Eve as a Young Girl,"
invites the viewer to peek
into the box and watch a
slide show on an iPod,
while listening to a sound-
track through headphones.
"Thank goodness for
artists," said Steven
Maclanski, museum presi-
dent. "This is a great
demonstration of
resourcefulness both by
the artists in taking an
ordinary, banal object and
creating scores of master-
pieces and the museum's
resourcefulness in creating
an exhibition such as this."
He said the exhibit also
conveys the important
message that creativity
comes in many shapes and
sizes.
"Great art isn't necessari-
ly defined as painting or
sculpture only. The mes-
sage that art can-be created
with inexpensive material
is an important one," he
said.
Throughout the month
of June, children will have
the chance to create their
own take-out work of art.
On Thursday, which is
free admission day at the
museum, from 4-5 p.m.
children can work with an
instructor embellishing a
blank container.

Paul Lepinskie/staff photographer
Continuing through July 2, children visiting the Brevard
Art Museum on Thursdays will have the chance to
explore their creativity by embellishing a blank Chinese
take-out box.

Each week will bring a
new form of embellish-
ment, said Tina Murray,
administrative assistant at
the museum.
"Part of our mission is to
give the community an
opportunityto learn and to
participate in educational
art programs. Now that
children are out of school,
this will be a way to help
parents fill up the day with
an activity."
The take-out exhibit and

free activities will be
offered through July 2.
The Brevard Art Muse-
um is located at 1463
Highland Ave., Mel-
bourne andis open from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thurs-
day through Saturday,

today's youngsters. Evidently,
they like lining up and

sit and interact with them

rather, than perform stunts
in front of them.
In any case, I did a little
research on clowns in the
area, because, young or old,
many of us love clowns.
Three clowns are listed in the

Twinkles and Sandee each

Rejoice and be glad; even when others are receiving

Recently, I was looking
at the benefits of
various dispositions
that we can take for our own
benefit, and I landed on
simply being glad.
Psalm 118:24 says: "This is
the day which the Lord has
made; let us rejoice and be
glad in it."
One might add that God
didn't cause all that's taking
place, so why be glad?
Though this may be true,
each day given to us is
certainly by the grace of
God; therefore, we should
rejoice and be glad in it,
right?
Then, I began to question
how acceptable would it be
to express such emotions
for God? Can you imagine
being in the check-out line
atWal-Mart and let out a
sound of gladness to the
Lord for an unexpected and
needed 70 percent discount
on your bill? Just how

acceptable would that be?
Being glad about what
God does is OK at church,
but at most other places,
well, folks will think we've
lost our marbles. We're
living in a natural reality
that does not accept praise
expressions toward God. His
place is in church and that
ought to be good enough for
Him, right?
I can flip out over a huge
slice of pizza and talk about
it, drooling, until it's done
and reflect on it to others for
days and it's OK. Duh -
over pizza?
A hot convertible passes
by and I can express
excitement at the thought of
having one, but get expres-
sive over the one who grants
life and breath and another
day to live why that's
absurd, isn't it?
I can praise my favorite
singer, or ask Glen Beck to
sign his new book, just for
me, while I rant and rave

PASTOR
JANNA HOGAN

over him to others in line;
that's great, but give that
same level of ranting over
the Bible, well, that emotion
expressed is just not cool or
acceptable.
When our team scores, it's
expected that we'd jump up
and down, do cartwheels
and shout out loud, but
being joyful and expressing
gladness over the Lord, well,
we're a fanatic, a real
nutcase; we must belong to
some cult.
The word "glad" means to
be merry, to rejoice, to cheer
ourselves and others with
our joy. It's being pleased
and showing our pleasure.
Why can't that emotion be
acceptable anywhere?

Here's another note on
being glad. True gladness is
not rooted in selfishness
and self-centeredness. It's
not all about me. It's about
what God does for all to
make them glad. Yet, when
others begin to show signs
of prosperity, not many are
free of feeling slighted or
overlooked. Gladness seems
to flee and sadness comes,
when it's not all about me.
We've got being glad for
ourselves down, but what
happens when someone
else gets the job that we
think we deserve, are we
glad? What happens when a
check comes in the mail for
your friend, when you're the
one who bought them that
Sraffle ticket? Are we glad
about it?
The needs surrounding us
now, coupled with all the
reports of insufficiency, may
be opening us up to look
out for ourselves.
'What happens when it's

just not our turn, when
we're the ones not getting
the attention? Where are we
when others are favored?
Have we forgotten what it
says in John 3:16: "God so
loved the world that He gave
His Son?"
It doesn't say that He so
loved "just me."
Being glad doesn't mean
that it's all about what's
going on just for me. There's
an old song that goes like
this: "Our day will come and
we'll have everything." Do
you remember it? Our day
will come again. In the
meantime, we can choose to
be glad for others when it's
their turn. We can trust God
who is impartial.
Too many emotions come
when we see others blessed.
Maybe they sowed the seeds
to harvest in this blessing
time, or maybe it's time for
us to mature and grow up
and not allow a trace of
jealousy to be found in us at

their good fortune.
Our turn will come from
the Lord, but it won't be
because we've bawled and
squalled over what others
get or because we think we
deserve it more than they
do. It will be because we're
glad that others are receiv-
ing blessings from the God
who loves to bless everyone
willing to receive from Him.
So, be glad for me when
it's my turn. Be glad for your
friend, neighbor, or boss. Be
glad when you see good
from God unfolding in
someone else's life. He
wants them to have what
they need to rejoice and be
glad in Him. Be glad.

Scopes
From page B1
always have a vision and a
dream. You are the eternal
optimist, always giving others
the benefit of the doubt. Your
spiritual and emotional
growth has been great this
.year. Be open and read the
signs that much increase is
on the way. You are so
deserving.

Libra-Sept 23-Oct.22
Your continuing belief and
faith in others is the spark
that keeps your heart open.
Your greatest joy comes
when your family and friends
are safe and happy. You have
courage like few others. Your
joy, love and faith are the
foundation and tools that
guide your life. This spiritual
radar continues to guide you
through all of life's storms.

Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
You have Universal protec-
tion. At the last minute, when
it seems like it may not work
out, a ray of light comes from
your spirit to light your way
and lead you on to victory in
your quest. Keep your visions
strong and ground your ideas
by writing them down. Now
the universe will go to work
and increase your greatest
desires.

Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Short- and long-term success
for you has a lot to do with
feelings. Before starting a
new project, check with your
inner guidance. If it feels like
fun and you want to.do it,
proceed forward. If you are
undecided and feel struggle,
don't act. Using the instincts
and inner guidance insures
positive results, if you are
open and trusting.

Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Your life's activities are
speeding up. What used to
take a year to accomplish
now takes three to six
months or less. Why?
Because of your spiritual and
universal growth. No more
jumping around on less
important things. Consult
your closest friends and advi-
sors before making major
decisions. Major success is
now on the way.

Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
You have the fire and desire
to get the job done. This is no
time to rest on your laurels.

determination and the atti-
tude that you have all the
tools to move forward. Your

life's greatest and richest
rewards.

ter world for yourself and
others around you. You have

from inspirations from the
