Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to be
true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because it's
online doesn't mean it's true!
From news.aol.corn:
World's priciest beer to be
auctioned
The world's most expen-
sive bottle of beer went on
the auction last block
Saturday; just don't expect to
drink it.
According to Andrew
Aldridge of the British
auction house Henry
Aldridge and Son, the
contents are downright
undrinkable. That's because
the beer bottle, which is still
about 80 percent full,
survived the famous fiery
crash of the Hindenburg in
New Jersey more than 70
years ago.

Supporters seek to

restore landmark

By Samantha Joseph

MARTIN COUNTY -
About seven years ago,
the two-story building on
the corner of Dixie High-
way and Delmar Street in
Stuart was dilapidated
and featured boarded
windows.
But this year, thanks to
the efforts of supporters
who want to preserve the

landmark building, the
site won the 2009 Roy E
Kenzie Award for out-
standing rehabilitation,
renovation or reuse.
"This is a major project
in the redevelopment
plan for Golden Gate,"
said Cathy Reeder, a rep-
resentative of the Com-

Jensen Beach athlete Mike
Melton says he runs to
keep his heart healthy.
And this month, the
long-distance runner
showed the strength of his
heart by running more
than 200 miles to raise
money to buy Christmas
toys for children in low-
income families.
The 51-year-old athlete
is set to be the only runner
to participate without any
teammates in the Ragnar
Relay Florida on Nov. 20
and 21.
He set off alone to com-

plete the more than 201-
mile race from Clearwater
to Daytona Beach, in the
hope of raising funds for
children whose families'
economic hardships would
likely leave them without
gifts for the holidays.
"I'm trying to just have
fun and raise some money
for a local charity," said Mr.
Melton, whose sponsors
are supporting WPSL Kids
Charity.
"Those are the two goals.
If I could help a kid have a
better Christmas, that's a
great thing. And if I could
have fun doing it, that's
another good thing."
He hopes to finish the
race in about 72 to 80

This race is not the ath-

group of men in a red pick-

at local stores passing off
fake $50 bills last week, law
enforcement officials say.
The men all live outside
of Martin County, and
appeared to drive along
Federal Highway on Nov.

along the way.
They stopped at a
Dunkin' Donuts, Baskin
Robbins and Harbor
Freight Tools in Stuart,
using at least 10 counter-

purchases and receive
change, said Rhonda Irons,
Martin County Sheriff's
Office spokeswoman.
All the bills had the same
serial number, she said.
Store clerks reported to
law enforcement officials
that the men entered the
stores, sometimes acting
suspiciously before pass-
ing the fake notes.
Sheriff deputies Jason

from the businesses, which
led to several arrests.

Grant available for

energy efficiency

By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY-
News of increased fund-
ing for a program to help
Treasure Coast residents
make their homes more
energy efficient resulted in
500 applications in one
week and about 70 more
per day, administrators say.
Residents of Martin, St.
Lucie, Indian River and
Palm Beach counties flood-
ed the offices of Indiantown
Non-Profit Housing with
applications for the weath-

erization assistance pro-
gram, which upgrades
houses to reduce utility
bills.
Since 2004, the agency
has been running the pro-
gram on an annual alloca-
tion of $90,000. But this
year, thanks to funding
from the federal stimulus
package, Indiantown Non-
Profit Housing secured a
grant of $5.2 million, set to
be disbursed over the next
three years.

free weekend entertainment
with a series of family-
friendly concerts.
The group is relaunching
its monthly concerts in the
parks event that brings live

The program kicks off on
Dec. 6 with an afternoon
concert at Phipps Park, 2175

"These events are fun for

all, they're free," said Angela
Gomez, the parks depart-
ment's community relations
director.
The popular event draws
thousands of concertgoers
from Martin and surround-
ing counties to area parks,
and supports the depart-
ment's goals of promoting

On Jan. 24, it moves to
Halpatiokee Park, and is set

and music by Thunder Road.

The February event coin-

On March 21, the concerts
move to Stuart's Flagler Park,

Most people are able to eliminate some of their
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms
with medication. But for some people, even with
treatment, painful heartburn (a burning discomfort
or pain behind your breastbone) is an ongoing

medical research study of an investigational
medication to evaluate its ability to reduce GERD
symptoms in people who only experience partial
relief with their current medication.

public funds for the
restoration.
Since buying the building
in 2002, the county has
invested about $475,000 in
the site, including the
$150,000 purchase price,
plus funds for four stages of
restoration, including sta-

repairs of doors and win-

The work won statewide
recognition for the project,
which aims to restore one
of the county's oldest
buildings.
The 1925-era building is
listed in the Martin County
Historic Register and is
nominated for listing in the
National Register of His-

"Prior to its restoration
this building was basically
an eye sore, but now, it's a
gateway to that communi-
ty," said Bonnie Landry,
community development
specialist.
"It's a focal point for the
Golden Gate community

Before the start of its
restoration, the 84-
year-old Golden Gate
Building, at the corner
of Dixie Highway and

Enough is enough

When we read of repeat offenders committing additional
crimes, we wonder if judges and parole officers ever are
required to account for their actions in allowing the bad
guys to continue to prey on innocent citizens.
Police kill a man after he drew a 9mm Glock 19 on them.
Court records show he had been arrested 19 times and he
had been convicted of simple assault, drug offenses, gun
offenses, disorderly conduct and contempt. When is
enough enough?

Learn about health care reform

It is embarrassing that the U.S. is the only industrialized
country which does not provide health care for all its resi-
dents. It is even worse that many are not informed as to how
the proposed system would work.

What's the difference?

I have been on Medicare for some years, and before that, I
had very good insurance as an employee of the state of Ken-
tucky.
Medicare pays less for medicine and doctor's visits than I
would be charged, because it covers many individuals and
has bargaining power.
Insurance companies may pay for the cheapest, not the
best, treatment. Is that being in charge of your own health
care?
Individuals pay a monthly fee for insurance, as I do. I
choose my own doctors) and each year, pay for the first
$150 of care.

For veterans

On Nov. 11, Veterans Day, Americans had the opportunity
to show how proud we are of the boys who have served and
are serving in our military.
To volunteer to be in dangerous places such as Iraq and
Afghanistan, far away from friends and family, is a very spe-
cial indication that this country has many young people
who are committed, patriotic and selfless.
They have truly earned our gratitude and respect.

From the mouth of Franklin

When drafting the U.S. Constitution, Benjamin Franklin
gave the delegates some sage advice when he said, "I have
lived, sir, a long time; the more convincing proofs I see of
this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a
sparrow cannot fall to the ground without notice, is it prob-
able that an empire can rise without His aid?"

Where's the justice?

In 1981, Mumia Abu-Jamal shot and killed Philadelphia
police officer Daniel Faulkner execution style, and after a
trial, where several witnesses positively identified the
shooter, he was sentenced to death.
Now, after all this time, he is still laughing at our system of
justice because the taxpayers have been providing him with
room and board and a whole series of defense lawyers.
It seems that he may die of old age before he gets the jus-
tice which he truly deserves.

Stop importing criminals

We have far too many homebred criminals. We do not
need to import more. However, some people apparently
will do anything to make a buck. Consider the car wash
operator who over a 10-year period imported dozens of ille-
gal immigrants from Mexico. When he was finally caught, a
lenient judge gave him only a fine, home confinement and
probation. Such lenient treatment will do nothing to dis-
courage others from trying to get rich at the expense of
those who will work for pennies.

It has been my experience, and, in my opinion, a termi-
nally-ill family member is better cared for in a hospital than

Coping w

ach year, I've written
a column with advice
from an expert about
coping with holiday grief.
This year is no different;
that column will appear
next week.
This week, I thought I'd
write about what I'm
planning to do in this
second year without Roy.
After the New Year, I'll let
you know how well it
worked out.
Roy and I made Thanks-
giving dinner for my mom
and dad in the last years of
his life. It was kind of funny,
because Roy, the English-
man, loved making a
special day, even if he didn't
really consider Thanksgiv-
ing a holiday!
We set a lovely table and
did the turkey and trim-
mings. Roy loved bringing
the turkey out and we ate at
our table overlooking the
lake. I had even begun an
after dinner concert with
some of the songs I was
working on.
When Roy died in
September 2008,1 I knew I
was not ready to celebrate
anything. We had still been
planning for the holidays
that year.
This year, I'm in the
process of moving. I know

that experts say not to
make such a major change
during the first year. In my
case, financial reality
pushed me into a decision
that may well be the right
thing to do, giving me a
fresh start. I will probably
be very busy around the
holidays, moving and
setting up my new home.
I will probably spend
Thanksgiving with my
parents, and we'll impro-
vise dinner or bring it in, as
my mother isn't really up to
cooking. We'll probably do
crossword puzzles, as we
often do when the three of
us are together. It will be a
quiet day and I know I will
feel sad, but I know that it's
normal. I also know now
that grieving doesn't have a
timetable and that holidays
and anniversaries are hard.
Roy loved Christmas and
he was in charge of it.
Growing up Jewish,
Christmas was not a part of
my tradition, but my
parents were married on

Christmas was basically a
repeat of Thanksgiving,
except that we added
Christmas crackers, those
English novelties that you
pull open to get a surprise.
We often listened to
music; Roy loved Pavarotti
and we would listen to him
sing. Sometimes I sang, too,
although not as well as
Pavarotti.
This year, I'll probably be
in a new home. I don't
know yet if I'll be ready to
start new traditions. I know
that's a step forward, but I
know that sometimes you
need to take baby steps.
Right after Christmas, on
Jan. 4, comes what would
have been our 20th wed-
ding anniversary. I want to
commemorate that, too.
I know this second
season without Roy will be
bittersweet, but I have the
chance to begin to make
memories in my new life. I
think it will just be part of
the grieving process I'm
going through, trying to
figure out what to do with
the rest of my life, includ-

get through a difficult time.

What's all the 'Skype' about?

f you spend any
amount of time surfing
the Web you are bound
to run across the name
"Skype."
You may occasionally
see a "Skype me" button
on a Web site or even
embedded in an e-mail.
Skype is one of the
leading "voice over IP"
services on the Internet.
It's a program/service that
turns your computer into
an easy-to-use Internet
phone allowing you to
place calls to any other
Skype user for free, or any
"real" phone number for a
very low fee.
I know, I know. People
have been talking about
cheap (or even free) phone
calls over the Internet for
years and I think I even
wrote a column about
another VOIP service,
Vonage, awhile back, but
what is it about Skype that
warrants a closer look?
What is it that makes
Skype special?
Well, for starters: price.
It's cheaper than other
services out there, certain-
ly a lot cheaper than your
standard plain old tele-
phone system.
It's free to call other
Skype users and outgoing

calls to regular, non-Skype
phones ("SkypeOut")
range around 2 to 4 cents a
minute. For a low yearly
fee, about $30 as I write
this, you can sign up for
unlimited outgoing calls.
Or, periodically, you can
load up on credits to use
when making outgoing
calls. There is a little meter
at the top of the program
that tells you how many
credits you have left as you
use them.
Also, they have special
rates for international
calls.
Inbound calls are
handled a little differently.
You can either be set up to
receive inbound calls only
from other Skype users or
you can, for a low yearly
fee, buy a "Skypeln"
number. Pick whatever
area code you like and
start receiving calls. If your
computer is turned off or
you don't answer, you have
the option of letting the
call go to voice mail or

forwarding the call to
another number, such as
your cell phone. The
quality is surprisingly
clear.
So far, since I've been
using it, no one that I have
called on a regular phone
has suspected that I was
calling from my computer,
and no one that has called
my Skypeln number has
even suspected that they
were talking to me on my
computer. Or at least the
ones that I've asked haven't
anyway. So far, I have not
heard any distortion or
experienced any of the
issues that plagued early
attempts of VOIP.
There are even some
pretty sophisticated
devices out there that work
with the service, such as
desk and cordless phone
modules that plug into the
USB port of the computer,
giving the system a true
telephone feel rather than
that "ham radio operator"
feel that computer head-
sets can often give you.
They have Wi-Fi hand-
sets that connect you to
your Skype service anytime
you have access to wireless
Internet, eliminating the
need to have a computer
on all the time and there

are even conversion kits,
again surprisingly cheap,
that let you convert your
home's phone wiring to
Skype.
I was reading about one
system that (when con-
nected to your house
wiring) lets you plug in
ordinary household
phones (wired, cordless,
etc.) into any jack in the
house and be able to make
and receive Skype calls.
With my current phone
bill as high as it is, I could
see how a system like that
could save a lot of money.
If you like the idea of
making cheap, long
distance calls without a lot
of hassles setting it up,
point your Web browser to
www.skype.com and read
up on it. The software is
free to download and
sports a guarantee that it's
free of spyware and other
malicious software.
The site is laid out well
with information readily
available, but if you do
have questions, call me at

customers "get a fair shake" is
his work. His three sons, Stu
and Jason as co-general
managers and Josh as
Internet manager, mind the
day-to-day store operations.
That frees up Stewart, with
the support of his wife Nancy,
vice president of special
projects, to spread his gospel
of goodness, even if he ain't
no saint.
"It's a complex thing," says
Stewart of his customer-
centered philosophy. "If I did
all of this and it hurt my
business, I'd stop doing it. I'm
no masochist. I want every-
one involved to feel better
about buying and selling
cars. But it has to work. I have
to be honest about that."
Stewart's career in car sales
has almost always worked.
His father, the original Earl
Stewart, founded a Pontiac
dealership in West Palm
Beach in 1937.
Stewart joined the family
business in 1968 and the

Woman passes driving test,
after 950 tries
A woman in South Korea
who tried to pass the written
exam for a driver's license
with near-daily attempts
since April 2005 has finally
succeeded on her 950th
time.
The aspiring driver spent
more than $4,200 in
application fees, but until
now had failed to score the
minimum 60 out of a
possible 100 points needed
to take a driving test. It took
Cha Sa-soon nearly 1,000
tries to pass the written test
for a driver's license.
Cha Sa-soon, 68, finally
passed with a score of 60.
Police said Cha took the test

Toyota franchise came on
stream in 1975.
Back then, Stewart enjoyed
success by selling cars the
old-fashioned way, with
high-pressure haggling.
He raised his three sons,
lived in a nice house, fished
from the deck of a 60-foot
sport boat and invested in
other businesses.
But over the last decade,
Stewart has systematically re-
engineered his approach.
The book, "Customers for
Life," by Lexus dealer Carl
Sewell was a primary
influence. So was the
University of Toyota's Total
Quality Executive Manage-
ment course. But the real
wake-up call came four years
ago when Stewart was
diagnosed with colon cancer.
"I thought I was going to
die," he says. "I now see
things in a different light. I
realized I wanted to pass
along a business to my sons
they can be proud of. And
perhaps one day they can
pass it along to their chil-
dren."
As such, unorthodoxy
abounds. Advertising that
once pushed price now
promises fairness, courtesy
and integrity. Red hotline
handsets programmed to
ring Stewart's cell phone are
strategically placed through-
out the store, inviting

media said she took it 950
times.
Now she must pass a
driving test before getting
her license, Choi said.

customers to call if they're
not completely satisfied.
Stewart's business card
divulges his cell and home
phone numbers. Dealer fees,
boosting the customers' cost
with little or no increase in
value, have been eliminated.
The results? Among Toyota
dealers, Earl Stewart Toyota
ranks No. 1 in volume in
Palm Beach County, No. 5 in
Southeast Toyota and No. 38
nationally, though located in
a town of just 8,000.
Monthly sales jumped
from about 100 units 10
years ago to more than 350
in 2007, pulling back to the
200-plus level amid the
current economic down-
turn.
"Did I change to sell more
cars and make more money?
Yeah, that's part of it," says
Stewart. "But I also feel good
about myself and sleep
better at night. And my sons
definitely feel better about
the business, too."

An Open Letter to Florida Car Dealers.

Eliminate the "Dealer Fee".

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "Mv C
am suggesting a change that -
will reward both you and your expectat
customers.

Virtually every car dealer Of eauca
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a Sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much higi
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.

Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
towers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
Itlin are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff" that has come to
er today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.
Sincerely,
Earl Stewart Earl Stewart Toyota

STUART -When Emmy-
winning film and television
composer Michael Bacon
needed a partner for a gig,
he told his younger brother,
Kevin, to pick up his guitar.
Michael had named the
group the Bacon Brothers
and Kevin was the only
brother he had.
Fourteen years and six
CDs later, the Philadelphia-
born duo make music
together in between Kevin's
film career and Michael's
instrumental work. They
come to the Lyric Theatre on
Nov. 22 and both brothers
spoke by phone about
music, the Mummers
parade in Philadelphia and
marriage.
While Kevin Bacon has a
very successful career as an
actor, he wasn't that confi-
dent about music, especial-
ly for that first gig.
"He was insecure about
his guitar playing," Michael
said. "It turned out that he
liked doing it. He was less of
a nervous wreck and he was
good at it. We did something
with the band that created
positive energy and once we
played that gig, club owners
networked. When word got
out that we were pretty
good, we traveled the East
Coast. I was the road man-
ager."

"The strange thing was
that I wasn't just thinking
about the Mummers. I
haven't been back that
much since my father died.
In my subconscious, there
were childhood memories.

Los Angeles is a metaphor
for leaving your hometown

Those memories are a
part of the brothers' project
to help fund the Mummers

From page B1
supported the orchestra for
20 years, Mr. Kopp hopes
music lovers not yet famil-
iar with the Atlantic Classi-
cal Orchestra will attend a
performance and become
regular attendees.
"We've grown phenome-
nally in the past 20 years to
a world-class orchestra
which had humble begin-
nings.
"The musicians truly like
working with each other
and make it a unique expe-
rience for the audience.
People who come to con-
certs come back again," Mr.
Kopp said.
The chamber orchestra
comprised of professional
musicians was founded by
Vero Beach resident and
professional conductor
Andrew McMullan in an
effort to offer Treasure
Coast residents an oppor-

tunity to attend orchestral
performances without trav-
eling to major cities.
The orchestra made its
debut with an all-Mozart
program at the Vero Beach
Museum of Art's Leonhardt
auditorium.
The orchestra was well-
received by enthusiastic
lovers of classical music
and in 2007, an anonymous
donor made a five-year
challenge gift of $1 million
in matching funds. To date,
$600,000 of the total
amount has been pledged
and $400,000 received,
thereby prompting the
donor to match the
$400,000 amount.
"Our patrons have been
very supportive and it's
exciting. We have a sophis-
ticated audience who
appreciate the spirit the
orchestra communicates to
the audience," Mr. Kopp
said.
He noted this season's
programs have been spe-

cially selected to pay trib-
ute to the orchestra's past
20 years of growth and to
the future.
"This season is filled with
music people know and
love and there's something
special about hearing a
concert performed live.
Come and try it," Mr. Kopp
said.
As a special treat for
music lovers, an hour
before each two-hour con-
cert, Maestro Robertson
conducts a pre-concert
conversation with the
audience regarding the
music they are about to
hear.
"The more you know
about it, the more you
appreciate it," Mr. Kopp
said.

for his younger brother, as
well.

finally, the wind has
slowed down. It
hasn't stopped, but
slowed. Seas are settling
and the bite is on.
Starting on the surf edge,
it is time for bluefish,
Spanish mackerels and
pompano. The cooler
water temperatures will
bring them to your toes.
Favored bait are spoons,
chrome; if it flashes and
dashes, they have to have
it. Size of the spoon
depends on your equip-
ment and conditions.
Stronger surf means heav-
ier spoons. You need
something that will pull in
those bigger waves, and
wire leaders are necessary.
These fish have lots of
teeth and they bite
through mono line.
Sun up will be your best
time, but they are there out
there all day, in and out.
Three to 5 pounds are
excellent table fare.
For pompano, pitch a
long cast, then move your
baits in slowly; they may
be at your toes. Sand fleas
and clam strips top the
bait list.
Use cut baits for the
blues and mackerels.
When the whiting show,
the snook will be there, so
pay attention.
Trout is closed, so, take
the barbs off the hooks for
a fast release. They are
everywhere; they know the
season is closed.
Red fish like the cooler
water and will stay in the
shallows longer looking for
breakfast. Soft rubber
baits, medium to small in
size are favored, and a live
shrimp will get them all.

FISHING
HENRY
CAIMATTO

From Bear Point south to
the power lines, on the east
or west sides, and from
county line south to
Conchy Joe's on the west is
very busy.
Sail Fish Flats, around
Boy Scout Island and
south, also are busy zones.
That is the area where
most of the flounder have
been found.
Throw in a slot snook,
bluefish, a ladyfish and a
couple of jacks and I am
sure you will busy.
Offshore it was all about
dolphin. They were in the
200-feet zone. You had to
go that far before the
waves were far enough
apart to fish.
This is a new week and
the seas have slowed.
Anglers are pulling bally-
hoo in the 100-foot zone.
Fish in the 20-pound class
are in good numbers both
north and south of the St.
Lucie Inlet. There were a
few sails and a few kings,
but it was the dolphin that
got all the attention.
Quiet seas and cooler
temperatures will make for
excellent fishing this week,
so get busy.
'Till next week, please
watch your litter. If you
bring it out bring it back.
Henry Caimatto is the
owner of the Snook Nook
Bait and Tackle shop in
Jensen Beach.
