Golfer loses arm in
alligator attack on course
From sfgate.com:
Officials say an alligator
bit off part of a golfer's
arm as he leaned over to
pick up his ball at a
private South Carolina
course.
The man, who is in his
70s, was retrieving his ball
from a pond when the 10-
foot alligator bit him.
The gator pulled the
golfer into the pond and
ripped off his arm in the
struggle. His golf partners
were able to free him.
Wildlife workers killed the

Detective: Scammers targeting grandparents
By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY The
woman's trembling hands were
the first red flag.
Collin Myles, assistant manager
at the Stuart Wal-Mart was man-
ning the store's MoneyGram desk.
It was just after 7 p.m. when a
woman in her 80s walked in, visi-
bly shaken, inquiring about wiring
more than $4,000 to Canada.
She had just had a call from her
grandson, who said he had just
been arrested in the foreign coun-
try and needed money for bail, the
woman told Mr. Myles. Her grand-
son gave her instructions on how
to send the money, and worried
and agitated, the woman hurried
to the store to complete the trans-
action.
"She had never used Money-
Gram before, but all she wanted to
do was get her grandson out of
jail. She was very upset," Mr.
Myles said. "But something about
the way she got the call bothered
me. Something just didn't feel
right about it."
And it wasn't, law enforcement
officials say, crediting the store
employee with saving the senior
from being the latest victim of a
telephone scam that nearly cost
her thousands.
"We get cases all the time," said
Detective Steve Franklin of the
Martin County Sheriff's Office,
saying his office responds to hun-
dreds of fraud cases against sen-
iors each year.
"We get a few a week easily," he
said.
In this scheme, which some offi-
cers refer to as the grandparent
scam, a caller phones a senior and
pretends to be a relative, often a
grandchild.
The callers take advantage of
the hearing loss problems that can
afflict seniors, and are also skilled
at confusing their elderly victims.
They might refer to the target as
"grandma," for instance, leading a
victim to unwittingly offer up the
name of one of her grandchildren
in response, law enforcement offi-
cials said.
Collin Myles,
assistant manager
of Wal Mart in
Stuart had the
good sense to
prevent an 80-year
old woman from
being duped out of
$4,000 when she
came into his store
to acquire a money
order for what she
believed was to
help her grandson
use for bail money.
Mitch Kloorfain

Their goal during a call is to
make the victim feel that a loved
one is in danger and in need of
immediate financial support.
In some cases, callers have
claimed to have been in accidents
or jail. They often have a partner
who pretends to be a police officer
or hospital official to verify the
story, Detective Franklin said.
"You don't have to respond right
away," he warned. "They're trying
to contact people and make them
upset to make them act right
away, without doing any
research."
The best strategy is for seniors
to contact their children or grand-

MARTIN COUNTY The
Association of Fundraising
Professionals, Treasure Coast
chapter, held a community
service day on Sept. 26.
Five area professionals
painted rooms at the Samari-
tan Center for Young Boys
and Families, Lou Hampton
School on Cove Road in Stu-
art.
Gigi Suntum, executive
director of Caring Children,
Clothing Children, coordi-
nated the day's event for the
AFP chapter.
Other volunteers included:
Amy Christensen, develop-
ment manager, Historical
Society of Martin County;
Louise Murtaugh, executive
director, Molly's House;
Glenna Parris, chief develop-
ment officer, Treasure Coast
Hospice; and Louise Sikorski,
The Auclair Group.
Cecil McLeod, director of
operations and David Lloyd-
Jones, school headmaster,
represented the Samaritan
Center staff and helped
direct and assist volunteers
in the community service
fun day.
The Samaritan Center is a
Christian, residential, early-
intervention program found-
ed 40 years ago to provide
family love, education and
discipline to behavior-chal-
lenged young boys and their
families.
The project, submitted by
Millie Wood, community
relations director at the
Samaritan Center, was cho-
sen by the AFP group from
among several applications
for this community service
day.

that have been done, we
know that there are health
risks involved with diets that
don't include enough fruits
and fiber," said Leah Bowz-
er, Martin County Health
Department's nutrition
services director. "And our
rates of obesity are rising."
That's why WIC adminis-
trators altered the program
to allow participants to be
able to purchase brown rice,
whole wheat bread, whole
cereal, corn tortillas and any
kind of fresh, frozen or
canned fruits or vegetables.
The idea is to make it
more affordable for mothers
to switch to healthy high-
fiber and whole-grain foods
for less nutritious counter-
parts, health officials say.
"They will be able to buy
those foods and have them
in their homes to feed their
families," Ms. Bowzer said.
The WIC vouchers are also
good toward the purchase of
"baby food" brands of fruits
and vegetables.
The added benefit is the
latest incentive in a program
that continues to expand in
the county in response to a
struggling economy.
The program, which is
open to income-eligible
participants, might accept a
family of four with a gross
monthly income of $3,400,
for example. It is also open
to pregnant women or those
who've had a child in the last
year, and children under 5.
"We've had quite an
increase in the last two
years," Ms. Bowzer said,
especially among young
children and families who
are seeking assistance for
the first time.
Since January, the Health
Department has served
5,050 clients through its WIC
program in Stuart and
Indiantown.
To respond to the growing
demand, it has also renovat-
ed its' Stuart office to
expand its service area, said
Renay Rouse, public infor-
mation officer.
The department also
hired four employees,
implemented a check-in
process and bought an auto-
dialer system to remind
clients of appointments.
"We've been planning this
all year...," Ms. Bowzer said.
"I'm really excited to help
the young families in Martin
County, and the new WIC
food will encourage them to
be healthier."

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't

Virtually every car dealer Of educa
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a Sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much high
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.
Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
towers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
ation are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff" that has come to
er today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.

Not a racist move
To the person stating that the school board tried to
censor the president in his address to the children last
month and that it was a racist move, you're wrong.
Most parents, including myself, were sent home notes
regarding the address and that we had an option, if we
wanted to let them participate. I had no issue with the
president addressing the children it was the questions
that were being asked that I, and thousands of other
parents nationwide, had a problem with.
Also, it's not his color it's his policies that are troubling
us. For you also to assume that all, as you put it, "right-
winged Christian, lunatic fringe" are white, you really
have no clue to what's been going on. Not all of us are
white, including me. Do you have to also be Christian to
be "right-winged," or is OK for some of us to be agnos-
tic?
I find your statements to be racist, and it just shows
how completely ill-informed the country is, if your
statements are any reflection of the "left."
No money for taxes
I live in a county where all of the people are rich. In
our county, we pay high taxes for all services. Now, the
county is going to ask for more and higher taxes.
I guess the powers-that-be think that taxing every-
thing in the county is right. Perhaps the rich can pay any
amount of taxes, but the rest of us do not have the
money to keep paying high taxes, period. Many people
are doing without necessities to be able to stay in their
homes. We pretend that in our county everyone can
come up with vast amounts of money and keep making
demands on those who are unable to pay.
I do not think that it is our president's fault. It is the
fault of greedy leaders in our community. Our county
commissioners do not listen when we speak. It is time to
stand up for what you think and say it.
Priorities?
On the one hand, our president wants to spend more
time considering his options in Afghanistan while our
soldiers are getting killed there almost every day. On the
other hand, he rushes through a huge, multi-billion
stimulus spending bill, wants a massive take-over of the
nation's health care system, and demands that we rush
into unprecedented so-called cap-and-trade legislation,
which will cost all taxpayers greatly.
Is this common sense or is it political hypocrisy?
Unfair insurance issues
This is regarding telling the truth about the health
care system. I am an American, both my husband and I
pay taxes, we are out of work and have no medical cov-
erage. We were trying to get my husband into a local
clinic because of his high blood pressure. They said they
couldn't see him because we didn't have any money, yet
I read about illegal immigrants getting free health care
and I don't think that's fair.
Appalling behavior
I was at a community sporting event last week, and
was appalled by the behavior of some of today's youth.
With pants hanging off their behinds they swore like
sailors, grabbed themselves repeatedly, made fun of
those participating in the sports, including the cheer-
leaders, all while sitting on their lazy butts not doing a
thing.
As an elderly citizen, I don't feel as though they would
have paid much attention to me if I would have let them
know my disgust. It would take a parent, teacher, coach
or policeman to get the point across that they have no
idea how to behave in a public place. Gone are the days
of respect and cheering each other on.

Nutrition suggestions from S to Z
t seems the bottom of
the alphabet has a lot of
powerhouse nutrition.
These suggestions are also
taken from lists supplied by
"Environmental Nutrition"
magazine and the Tufts
University "Health and
Nutrition Letter."
Sweet potatoes are a
good alternative to regular
potatoes. They have a lot of
beta-carotene, vitamin C,
folate, calcium and magne-
sium. Just remember,
adding a lot of sugar adds
empty calories. Try sugar-
free maple syrup instead.
Whenever I was upset,
my husband, Roy, had the
Englishman's answer to
every problem: "A nice cup
of tea."
It turns out that tea has
antioxidants called cate-
chins that may reduce
heart disease. This isn't
herbal tea, it's the real stuff,
green or black. The benefits
are the same for caffeinat-
ed and decaffeinated tea.
Iced tea is not as effective.
Tofu and other soy
products have been touted
for a long time, but it's
unclear what the benefits
are. Women with a history
of breast cancer are usually
steered away from soy
products, as they can
mimic the effects of
estrogen. It is a good
source of protein and a
meat substitute.
Tomatoes, no matter how
you pronounce them, have
a lot of lutein for the eyes
and vitamin C. Cooked or
processed tomatoes,
interestingly enough, are
the best source of lycopene,
which seems to help
prevent some cancers. Just
remember if they are
canned, they may have a
lot of salt.
Tuna has those wonder-
ful omega-3s and vitamins
and good protein. Canned
tuna should be packed in
water, not oil and use low-
fat mayonnaise.
Turkey breast, without
the skin, has a lot of protein
without a lot of fat. It also
has B vitamins and seleni-
um. It's a good substitute
for processed meats.
Walnuts, consumed in
small amounts, six at a
serving, are low in saturat-
ed fats and high in unsatu-
rated fats. Use them as a
snack, to replace a saturat-
ed fat item, but use them
sparingly, because the
calories add up.
Watermelon is another
good source of lycopene,
which may prevent some
cancers.
White fish, such as
flounder, cod and sole, has
a lot of protein and not
many calories and fat. They
should be baked, broiled or
grilled; frying undoes the
good.
Whole-grain bread is one
of those terms that are easy
to misunderstand. When
you read the label, the first
ingredient should be whole
grain. If it says "multi-
grain," or anything other
than whole grain, it's not.
Whole-grain pasta is
another good swap item for
the white variety. Accord-
ing to the Tufts newsletter,
new technology has made
the whole-grain products
tastier.
Yogurt shows up on both
lists and you want to stick
with non-fat or low-fat
varieties. It's a good source
of protein and calcium and
good bacteria. It also
provides a variety of
minerals and vitamins.Stay
away from the sugared
varieties and add fresh fruit
to plain, low-fat yogurt.
We've gone through the
nutritional alphabet and
there's a lot to choose from.
The list isn't complete; as I
mentioned in the first
column, most fruits and
vegetables could be on it.
The lists may give you
some suggestions for a little
variety and maybe, a taste
for something new that's
good for you, too.

Exploring your new computer
W ell, you finally did
it. After months,
even weeks of
planning, you finally took
the plunge.
After hours of research-
ing magazines, the Inter-
net, the opinion of friends,
"Consumer Reports," etc.
you finally settled in and
bought your first comput-
er. You've just opened a
door into a whole new
reality that only the
computer-literate seem
unfazed by. Welcome
aboard.
So now what?
All those magazines and
consumer reports don't tell
you what you are going to
do with your new machine,
they just tell you which
ones they think are better.
Why are you getting a
computer in the first place?
What do you need a
computer for? What are
you going to do with it?
If you are a new comput-
er owner (that is, you've
never owned a computer
before in your life), there
are a few things you ought
to know right off the bat,
the kind of things that no
one tells you about when
you were shopping for your
machine, such as how to
do the basic things, such as
sending and receiving e-
mail, typing letters,
"downloading" and going
on the Internet.
You've heard about these
things a thousand times,
-
'V
COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
but what does it all really
mean?
I know first-hand just
how confusing things can
be when you bring home
your new computer. There
is a lot of excitement as the
machine is plugged in for
the first time. Then, when
you throw the switch and
turn it on, your journey
begins.
You may encounter a
menu where you have to
fill out some information
about yourself and you
may have to enter an
authorization code, but
before too long, you will
make it to the desktop,
where all the magic
happens.
The desktop is the first
place you will see every
time your machine wakes
up and stabilizes. You can
tell when the machine is
fully awake because the
little hourglass will go away
and the hard drive light
will stop flickering.
You can recognize the
desktop by the presence of
a button on the lower left
corner of the screen (the
"start" button), a clock at
the lower right and the
presence of icons, such as
"my computer," "my
documents" and "recycle
bin."
Take a look around.
Click the start button
and a menu will open that
leads to more options.
Move your mouse up the
menu and you will see
different program groups
expand as you pass your
mouse over them. This is
where you can find all the
controls that make your
new machine do the things
you need it to do.
Hold your mouse over
the "programs" program
group and you will be able
to see all the programs that
are already installed on
your machine.
Programs are like tools
and the "programs group"
is like a giant toolbox. Each
of the programs is a tool
specifically tailored for a
specific task and, like most
tool boxes, it is OK to have
two or more of the same
kind of program.
Glance down the list of
programs and get
acquainted with the tools
in your toolbox. This is
where you go to launch the
programs you will need to
be productive with your
computer.
Get familiar with what
programs are installed on
your new machine and
take a little time to get
familiar with how they
work.
Most people will try to
learn Windows. I've always
counseled people not to
worry about Windows,
instead, focus on learning
the programs installed in
Windows.
After spending some
time exploring the pro-
grams installed on your
new machine, it's time to
have some fun.
Click "start," "programs"
and "games." Don't ignore
the games as just frivolous
time-wasters. Use the
games that are already
installed on your machine
as tools to familiarize
yourself as to how to
interact with your
machine.
You'll quickly find that
once you master a program
such as Solitaire, you will
also have mastered things
such as "clicking and
double clicking," "dragging
and dropping" and have
gained exposure to such
common program features
such as "pull down
menus."
Games allow you to learn
how to interact with your
machine without the
pressure having to produce
anything while you learn.
I wish you the best of
luck and welcome you to
the never ceasing world of
computers.

Fitness 'factory' manufactures healthy results
By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY -
From his spot at the front
desk, Kevin Lucas surveys
the vast open-floor layout
of The Factory, his new Stu-
art gym.
Instead of talking up its
amenities, such as the lat-
est equipment for function-
al training and perform-
ance, the former college
basketball player is most
proud of what The Factory
lacks.
There are a few televi-
sions, for instance, but no
lounges for "vegging" out to
watch TV," like some other
health clubs provide, he
said.
There's no sense, either,
that sweaty throngs of exer-
cisers have just gone
through the workout sta-
tions. The Factory is metic-
ulously maintained.
Staffers routinely wipe
down equipment, empty
bins and clean restrooms,
all in an effort to create an
environment where train-
ers, clients and members
can work efficiently for
maximum payoff.
"What I've tried to do
with this place is to try to
meld the best things I've
seen in other places,
remove things I thought
were bad," Mr. Lucas said.
"You're going to find a seri-
ous, functional training,
sports performance center,
along with the best pieces
of a health club."
Since it opened on April
1, The Factory has generat-
ed proven results for its
loyal members, who've
come for assistance with
mobility problems, weight-
loss goals, strength and
overall quality of life.
A key factor in the gym's
early success has been its
ability to develop cus-
tomized programs to meet
a range of needs, beyond
weight management.
"What makes us different
is that we're customer-serv-
ice oriented," Mr. Lucas
said.
It's a skill that the gym
owner honed during a
nearly two-decade-long
career with Florida Power &
Light Company, where he
last served as project man-
ager in their integrated sup-
ply chain, until his retire-
ment.
But even while he worked
for FP&L by day, his love of
athletics led him constantly
to the gym, and eventually
down a path that would see
him become a certified per-
sonal trainer through the
International Sports Sci-
ence Association in his
spare time.
The gym's programs,
including its two-month
weight-loss boot camps,
reflect his passion for train-
ing and fitness.
"We help people reach
their goals," Mr. Lucas said.
The Factory is located at
3207 S.E. Gran Parkway, in
the Stuart Commerce Cen-
ter, just off Federal Highway.
It opens from 5:30 a.m.-10
p.m. on Monday to Friday; 7
a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturdays
and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sun-
days. For more informa-

make any of these comments
if you sold Fords in a non-

expect dealers to change
when consumers think they
should pay less than dealer

into any other form of retail
store and pay what they are
asking? Your ideas are noble,
but there are other dealers
who have tried 'your'
methods who are no longer
in business."
This dealer is saying his
customers are so ruthless
and cunning they won't buy a
car unless they can buy it
below his cost, and his only
solution is to trick them into
thinking that they are buying
it below his cost, such as
tacking on a "dealer fee" to
the price they quoted the
customer.
He also goes on to say that
my "ideas are noble" but I

can't possibly be successful,
and I will go broke trying. I
truly appreciate his concern
and I want to assure him, if
he is reading this article, that
my business is doing very
nicely.
This attitude is actually a
prevailing part of the culture
in many car dealerships.
Many dealers, dealer man-
agers and sales people don't
trust their customers (how
paradoxical). They don't even
like their customers.
A very common expression
among car dealers and their
sales staff is "buyers are liars."
This means a prospective
customer will not tell you the
truth about the condition of
his trade-in, he will lie to you
about the price he got from
your competitor, and he is
likely to remove those new
tires that were on his trade-in
when the dealer appraised it
when he comes in to pick up
his new car.
There are also a lot of
dealerships where used car
buyers and people with bad
credit are held in especially
low esteem. They have
nicknames for people with
bad credit such as "slugs" and
"roaches."
Apparently, dehumanizing
these unfortunate members
of our society with derogato-
ry labels makes it easier to
treat them so shabbily.
People with bad credit are
targeted with direct mail and
newspaper ads making
absurd promises that
convince prospective
customers they can finance a
car no matter how bad their
credit.
In some dealerships,
applicants are coached on
how to falsify credit applica-
tion and pay records. In
some cases, an applicant
may not even know they are
signing a false credit applica-
tion, which is federal offense.
In most cases, the credit is
refused and the applicants
are not even given the
courtesy of a return phone
call to tell them this.
I don't claim to be a
psychologist (and I don't
even play one on TV), but I
have read articles explaining
how humans will stereotype
others in a fashion that
falsely justifies their negative
behavior toward those same
people.
We see this with racism
and even in wars. If you
make yourself believe car
buyers are out to take
advantage of you, "buyers
are liars," you can't feel guilty
about tricking them into
paying a dealer fee. If you
trick a "roach" or a "slug" into
coming in to buy a car on
credit when they probably
can't, why should you feel
guilty? After all, roaches and
slugs don't have feelings.
What these kinds of
dealerships don't understand
is that you must trust a
person first before you can
expect her to trust you. You
have to treat a person with
respect before you can
expect that person to respect
you. Somebody has got to go
first.
My experience over the
past 40 plus years as a car
dealer is that 99.9 percent of
my customers are good
people who I can believe and
trust. Those are pretty good
odds and I just assume that
every customer I am dealing
with is part of that 99.9
percent.
Once in a great while I get
burned, but the loss from
that one-in-a-thousand who
takes advantage is far
outweighed by the other 999
who respond positively to
my trusting them and
treating them with respect.

Merritt Island is an
outdoorsman's paradise
Parks,
recreational
facilities abound
By Jennifer Nessmith

If you're in search of the
"great outdoors" for your
next staycation, look no
further than Merritt Island.
Situated in central Bre-
vard County, Merritt Island
is home to more than 20
county-operated parks, the
Merritt Island National
Wildlife Refuge and several
venues that cater to
extreme sports.
The Merritt Island
National Wildlife Refuge,
established in 1963 as an
overlay of NASA's John F.
Kennedy Space Center,
consists of 140,000 acres of
a wide variety of habitats
for more than 1,500 plants
and animals. Those habi-
tats include coastal dunes,
saltwater estuaries and
marshes, freshwater
impoundments, scrub,
pine flatwoods and hard-
wood hammocks.
Sandee Larsen, office
manager for the Merritt
Island Wildlife Refuge
Association, a "friends"
group for the refuge with
more than 1,000 members,
said the main points of
interest for the refuge are
the Visitor's Center, the
Black Point Wildlife Drive
and the Haulover Canal
Manatee Observation
Deck.
"Black Point is a 7-mile,
self-guided auto tour with
12 stops," Ms. Larsen said.
"Basically, you'll see water
and wading birds, alliga-
tors, otters, turtles and
birds of prey. It's the one
stop you're sure to see
some wildlife."
There are also opportuni-
ties for fishing, hunting,
boating and paddling.
The Visitor's Center is
located 3-1/2 miles east of
State Road 402. For more
information, call (321) 861-

Comedy at Lyric
The original Catch a Ris-
ing Star comedy club in New
York opened in 1972 and
was the launching ground
for Robin Williams, Billy
Crystal and Jerry Seinfeld.
Today, there are five clubs
to showcase comedic talent.
A Catch a Rising Star road
show comes to the Lyric
Theatre on Oct. 17 with vet-
eran stand-up comedian
Kevin Meaney, who has
appeared on "Late Night
with David Letterman,"
"Saturday Night Live" and
"Oprah." He also starred in
the CBS sitcom "Uncle
Buck."
Opening the evening is
Yankee Stadium beer man
Steve Lazarus, who makes
folks laugh at the ball park
and at comedy clubs around
the country.
The show contains adult
material.

A tribute to a
classical guitarist
Classical guitarist Con-
stantinos Jaferis of Stuart
died on Sept. 29. He had
been battling leukemia and
was in Seattle for a bone
marrow transplant.
Mr. Jaferis was a gifted
artist and composer with an
international reputation. He
was also well-known as a
guitar maker. He created a
new guitar, with 27 frets, to
provide a higher range. He
considered the Lyric his
home stage and had begun
presenting Mother's Day
concerts there.
I had the pleasure of inter-
viewing Mr. Jaferis several
times. He was a charming
man who loved to talk about
his art.
Mr. Jaferis had plans for a
series examining the differ-
ent eras of classical music.
Sadly, that will not happen.
Words he spoke during our
last talk seem very apt now.
"There are no words to
express when I'm on stage,"
he said. "I do not know
where I am going, but I am
going somewhere that night
with the music. It's taking
me and I'm the first passen-
ger."
Have a peaceful journey.

Local band reunites for one show
By Shelley Koppel
Entertainment writer
STUART Michael
"Spaz" McGoorty came out
of Detroit as the vocalist
with a band called The
Cadillac Kids. He relocated
to Port St. Lucie and tried
to put together a new ver-
sion of his old band.
With Wade Jackson on
guitar and vocals, Chris
Morriah on bass and Joey
Cotoia on drums, the new
band, The Cadillac Bratz,
was born.
The group went their
separate ways, but their
CD, "Fasten Your Seatbelt"
is about to be re-released
by Retrospect Records.
They decided this was the
perfect time for a reunion
show, one night of Bratz.
They'll be together again
on the Lyric Theatre stage
on Oct. 24. Mr. McGoorty
and Mr. Cotoia spoke
about why they've come
together for one special
night.
"About seven months
ago, a guy contacts me by
e-mail, saying he owns
record company and
wants to offer a deal," Mr.
Cotoia said. "He owns Ret-
respect Records and we
decided to let him re-
release 'Fasten Your Seat-
belt.'
"We all love each other,"
Mr. McGoorty said. "We're
brothers. We always said
we'd play together. When
we heard, 'your record is
being re-released,' it got us
to thinking. That spawned
everything."
The band chose the Lyric
for their reunion for senti-
mental reasons.
"It's always been a spe-
cial place for us and for our
fans," Mr. McGoorty said.
"The Lyric was our home
and we played there all the
time. It's a place for every-
one from little kids to older
folks. We wanted to make
sure young kids could get
it. The Lyric Theater has
done so much for us."
The Cadillac Bratz had a
following throughout
Florida, playing small
clubs and large concert
halls from Miami to Orlan-
do. They gave the same
high-energy show in small
venues as well as large.

You have so much
courage. When the chips

through to the end. Others
may quit, but you hang in

more times than not.
Yours is a great attitude

Gemini-May 21-June 21
Your spirit is so strong that
few of the things you
worry about ever come to
pass. Your good intentions
will always be honored.
Your love of family and
friends is legendary. When
the world gets to you, go
back to your roots. You
don't have to do it all, you
know. Let your friends
help a little. Now everyone
feels needed.
Cancer-June 22-July 22
Aren't you glad you held
firm to your beliefs when
others tried to sway you
with theirs? Your power,
love and belief are
unmatched. Your feelings
run deeper than anyone
else. People may not
always understand the
methods but they are

gladness for all you have
been given. Much more is
on the way.
Virgo-Aug. 23-Sept. 22
Your love of life, nature
and the universe is evident
in the renewed health and
interest in the past few
months. Virgoians are very
grounded. You are a great
teacher for all on the
virtues of simplicity. You
can make a lot from very
little. These are virtuous
ideals saved for you. This
keeps your spirit strong
and eager.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct. 22
Your teaching and commu-
nication skills will continue
to be called on to help oth-
ers who are ready to know
more about all that you
know. Educating is one of
your greatest gifts, along
with healing and creativity.
You love to share and are
generous with your time
and wisdom. Your reward
is the joy that comes back
from the giving.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Relax. Release, regenerate
and re-group. Let go of the
past and allow the uni-
verse to move you in the
direction of your higher
desires. Meditate, center
your thoughts and quiet
your mind. Just allow your-
self to be. Find that com-
forting oneness within and
ask spirit to surround you
with its loving, healing
power. It will.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
This is a time to work on
your greater long-range
goals. Stretch your limits.
Expand your power. Posi-
tive energy alignment for
Sagittarius has moved into
place in the universe.
Higher wishes are ready to
be fulfilled. Increased spiri-
tual awareness helps even
more. You now have the
vision to change things for
the better.
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Strive to simplify your life
rather than complicating it.
Focus on today. Tomorrow
will be here soon enough.
Do what is needed now.
Live a natural life. Some-
times less is more. Peel
away illusion and cut to
the bottom line. Is this
good for me or not?
Answer that question and
every other thing will fall in
place.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Now is a good time to fine
tune your life. Set your
goals, get clear on your pri-
orities and manifest the
desired results. Don't wait
around. Now is the time
for action. You are in the
right place at the right
time. Timing is good to
begin new projects. Trans-
form blocked energy into
new beginnings. Go for it
with gusto.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
Set healthy, productive
boundaries. Work within
them to the fullest. Refuse
to allow yourself to be
pushed around. Now is a
good time to clean up
loose ends and nagging
responsibilities left hang-
ing too long. Open your
imagination and vision.
You know what is right.
Trust this great inner vision
and all will be well.

for a singer, comedian, acoustic band, etc. It can also be used for corporate functions,
fundraisers, receptions, talent shows, spelling bee's, dances... the possibilities are endless!

School is bringing three clas-
sic novels to life this season.
From Nov. 5-7, a stage
adaptation of Mary Shelley's
"Frankenstein" adds music
to the familiar story.
In a complete change of
pace, Cole Porter's "Kiss Me,
Kate, "a musical re-telling of
Shakespeare's "The Taming
of the Shrew," will be pre-
sented from Feb. 11-13.
The Broadway musical
version of "The Adventures
of Tom Sawyer" will close the
season on April 29-30 and
May 7-8.
All shows will be presented
at the Wanda H. Yarboro
Center for the Performing
Arts auditorium at Martin
County High School, located
at 2801 S. Kanner Highway,
Stuart. For tickets, call the
box office at (772) 219-1800,
Ext. 32318.
Martin County High
School student Kelsey Moore
has again been invited to
perform at the Lyric Theatre.
She will open for comedian
Mark Russell on March 9 and
11.
Painting for a cause
It's time for men to stop in
at Zafka Studios, 1999 N.E.
Jensen Beach Blvd. for "Men,
Breasts and Brushes," a
fundraiser that helps Pink Tie
Friends assist women with
breast cancer.
Potter Jim Kasper makes a
collection of clay breasts and
men are invited to come in
and paint them. Stop in
through Nov. 15 to paint a
breast that will be auctioned
off on Dec. 4 at the gallery. All
proceeds benefit Pink Tie
Friends.
Museum offers
living history
History comes alive at the
House of Refuge on Hutchin-
son Island on the second Sat-
urday of each month. From
10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., local
historian and re-enactment
player Marty Baum will
escort visitors through the
House of Refuge as a turn-of-
the century keeper might.
The re-enactment tours
will be limited in size to allow
for discussion.
Tours are included in the
admission price. Adult tick-
ets are $6. For children 5-12,
the fee is $3 and children
under 5 are admitted free.
For more information, call
(772) 225-1875.
Concert planned
Larry Allen Brown will
present an acoustic guitar
concert on Oct. 23 at the
Treasure Coast Unitarian
Universalist Church, located
at 21 S.E. Central Parkway,
Stuart. The theme of the
show is "Harmony for
Humanity," in memory of
Daniel Pearl, the reporter
who was kidnapped and
murdered in Pakistan in
2002.
Mr. Pearl's family estab-
lished a foundation and set
up "World Music Days," held
every October to use the
power of music to encourage
fellowships across cultures.
The cost of the concert is
$10. Tickets may be pur-
chased at the door or by call-
ing (772) 223-5020.
Historical society
plans events
The Historical Society of
St. Lucie County has several
free events scheduled.
On Nov. 6 it will celebrate
the 75th anniversary of the
end of prohibition in Florida
at Friday Fest.
On Dec. 12, the society cel-
ebrates the feast of St. Lucia.
It commemorates the day
the Spanish first came to the
area and named the area St.
Lucia, which became St.
Lucie. The event begins at
the Fort Pierce Community
Center at noon and includes
a trolley tour to the old fort
and Indian mound, exhibits
of local memorabilia and
foods from the first Thanks-
giving in Florida in the 1500s.
The day ends at 5:30 p.m.
with a play, "My St. Lucie,"
that tells the story of the
county and its settlers.

A guide to fitness: day-by-day workout
rT mhis month I would like
I to talk about training
and what I have found
over the years to be very
effective in developing
muscle.
When I started in the gym, I
looked at the personal
trainers and watched what
they were doing with their
clients. I also looked at the
condition of their clients to
see if they were making any
progress and how they looked
physically.
The most effective way I
found is the push pull
method. It's effective because
it balances the body by
exercising opposed muscle
groups while the other
muscles rest.
For example, a good upper
body, large muscle group
training method is chest and
back, two large muscle
groups in the upper body
opposed to each other.
Day 1 of your training
week: Chest and back.
Working a large muscle
group, upper body the first
day of the week is a good
choice. Your body is rested
from your weekend off and
you can put as much energy
into your workout as possible.
I try to do at least four to
five different chest and four to
five different back exercises
the first day of the week. Try
some of these exercises with
dumbbells, not just
machines. This will help
straighten your core, which is
also important.
After repeating each round
of eight to 10 exercises, get on
a cardio machine for 10
minutes to give your muscles
a chance to recover for the
next round of weight training.
If you repeat these exercises
four times, you have trained
your large muscle group
upper body with 16 chest and
16 back exercises, which
should take you about an
hour.
Day 2: Legs. Large muscle
group, lower body.
There are many different
muscles in the leg group, so
make a plan of your workout
routine before you start your
workout. Again, try to pick
four to five muscle groups to
work the front of your legs
and four to five for the back of
your legs. After each round

completed, let the muscles
recover by walking on a tread
mill for 10 minutes. Repeat
this workout routine four
times, which should take
about an hour.
Day 3: Arms. Small muscle
group, upper body.
The reason we work arms
so late in the week is because
on the first day, you work
upper body, large muscle
group, chest and back. The
arm and shoulder muscles
are secondary muscles to the
chest and back on day one, so
they are getting somewhat of
a workout. It is best to let the
arms and shoulders rest until
later in the week so when you
work them out they have
recovered and you get more
out of that workout.
Again, pick five to six
exercises with opposing
muscles to balance your
workout. After each round, let
your muscles recover by
walking 10 minutes on a
treadmill or elliptical
machine. Then repeat this
workout routine five to six

times, which should take
about an hour.
Day 4: Shoulders and
abs. Small and large muscle
group upper body.
When picking exercises for
your shoulders, make sure
you pick the right weights for
the muscle you are training.
Don't use a weight for a large
muscle on a small muscle. As
a trainer, I have seen many
people over the years with
shoulder injuries. Start low in
weight and gradually increase
the weights over time to a
limit.
Good form is very impor-
tant. Try not to copy the
average person in the gym.
Again, pick a workout that
will weight train your muscles
and balance your shoulder
routine. I recommend four to
five shoulder exercises with
opposing muscles.
Pick a group of ab exercises
but do not work them too
hard. The reason is this is a
large muscle group and they
will get bigger in size if you
work them too hard, thus
making your waistline larger.
Again, when resting the
muscles, hop on a cardio
machine for 10 minutes and
let them recover. Repeat this
four to five times, which
should take about an hour.
OK, I am sure a lot of you
are questioning why I say hop
on a cardio machine while
you let your muscles recover.
Well, when you work out,
your heart rate goes up and
that helps burn calories, so
why not keep it up by doing
cardio while your muscles are
recovering?
In the beginning, it maybe
somewhat hard, but your
endurance level will come up
and it will get more tolerable
soon enough.
Change your workout
routine about every four
weeks of training to help
develop the entire muscle
you are targeting.
It is also wise to use a
personal trainer in the
beginning to get a good
productive workout program
together for you so you do not
get hurt and you balance your
body during your weekly
routine.
The next article will be on
what we eat to get in shape
and what eat to maintain our
physique as a personal fitness
trainer.
