Woman fined for letting
12-year-old drive
From news.yahoo.com: A
Montana woman accused
of letting her 12-year-old
daughter drive three
siblings to day care has
been fined nearly $1,000.
Angela Parenteau entered
a no contest plea to one
count of criminal endan-
germent.
Prosecutors say in March,
Parenteau allowed her
daughter to drive three
younger siblings from their
house inVaughn to a day
care about 15 miles away in
Great Falls. Police say
Parenteau claimed she was
too sick to drive and on
medication.
The state said it agreed to
the plea agreement because
the 12-year-old girl did not
want to testify against her
mother.
School tells all parents

The automated call is set
to go out at 9 a.m. each day
from Martin Middle School,
but only to families whose
children have been marked
absent that day. But
instead, the call went to
parents of all 475 students
at the school.
Principal Nate Holmes
said about 20 people
showed up at the school,
but dozens of anxious
parents called after receiv-

Consultants get 14-county
conservation contract
By Samantha Joseph

MARTIN COUNTY Administra-
tors of a small Palm City-based com-
pany are celebrating its securing a fed-
eral contract to oversee conservation
efforts on about 71,000 acres of land in
14 counties across Florida.
Crossroads Environmental Consult-
ing, a seven-year-old operation with
five full-time employees, won a con-
tract with the Natural Resources Con-
servation Service, a division of the
United States Division of Agriculture.
The five-year deal, renewable annu-
ally, will also see the local company
monitor conservation efforts on about
21,000 acres in Martin County, includ-
ing the Allapattah Flats preserve,
which extends from Palm City nearly
to the St. Lucie County boundary.
"Our task is to go / 72-54

parcels, under-
stand if the
restoration activi-
ties are working,
and if they aren't,
make recom-
mendations to help

MARTIN COUNTY-
The decorations that
crowd the walls of the den
of his Stuart home tell the
story of the last two
decades of the life of Ed
Traylor, a former marine
patrol officer and lieu-
tenant in the Martin
County Sheriff's Office.
Dozens of gold and sil-
ver medals from athletic
meets in several states vie
for space, competing with
plaques, awards, certifi-
cates of merits and other
distinctions that help tell
the story of man who
served in the military or
law enforcement for more
than five decades, and
spent his latter years
excelling as a sports
shooter.
"I call this my ego
room," said Mr. Traylor,
70, who is quick to add
that he does not mean to
be boastful.
But his accomplish-
ments speak for them-
selves.
At the Florida Police &
Fire Games, held annual-
ly for law enforcement
officers and firefighters
from throughout the
state, Mr. Traylor has won
79 medals in skeet, a
shooting sport, in the last
17 years.
He's lost count of the
number of gold medals
he's taken home from the
International Police &
Fire Games, but the num-
ber's upward of five.
His triumphs at the
games have come despite
great personal setbacks.
Last June, for instance,
when he won five gold, a
silver and bronze medal
at the Police & Fire
Games, it was hard to tell
that the man who also
secured the highest over-
all skeet score had suf-
fered a mild heart attack
only three weeks earlier.
And five weeks after
undergoing a quadruple
heart bypass in 1990, he
traveled to Savannah,

The husband and wife
owners of an electrical
engineering business and
music school have merged
their two interests to make
sweet music and cut thou-
sands from their utility
bills.
John Eriksen, a general
contractor, and his wife,
Cindy Kessler, owner and
director of the Stuart
School of Music, figured
out a way to get the power
company to pay them for
electricity.
Mr. Eriksen is a dealer
for photovoltaic systems,
rooftop panels that con-
vert sunlight to electricity.
The system generates
electricity, which FPL, the
local power company,
credits to the business.
In other words, FPL
"refunds" the business any
power it produces, with a
credit that appears on its
electric bill.

music school has used the

The first United States

the United States
Government has remained
valid. Only once in the past
has the Government ever
recalled any of its paper cur-

was in 1933, when the Gold

Rants .:
Got something to say?
Call the Hometown Rants & Raves line at
(772) 465-5504
or e-mail news@hometownnewsol.com.
Callers are asked to refrain from making slanderous
statements. Statements of fact will be checked for
accuracy.
Check statements of fact
Your Rants & Raves column states that statements of fact
will be checked for accuracy. If this is so, how do you explain
the rant "From a concerned senior citizen" in your Sept. 11
column?
It begins by stating, "I wish to address the part of Obama's
universal health care plan that states anyone 75 and over, in
order to maintain membership in the plan, must be coun-
seled on suicide."
This is a statement of fact, and it is not accurate, yet it was
included without comment. None of the plans currently
under consideration in Congress, including "Obama's plan"
require counseling on suicide to maintain membership, at
75 or any age. Some of the plans do allow Medicare to reim-
burse seniors once every five years for the cost of voluntary
end-of-life counseling. Such counseling is not mandatory
and does not involve suicide, but rather decisions regarding
living wills, DNRs, hospice care and the extent to which a
person wants extraordinary methods used or not used to
prolong life.
As a newspaper, you have a responsibility to point out
factual inaccuracies, and not let them go unchallenged,
particularly in a column that professes to check statements
of fact for accuracy. Failure to do so allows such falsehoods
to be disseminated and accepted by others as fact, and con-
tributes to a lack of understanding regarding the serious
issues currently being debated.
Editor's note: This reader is correct in his assessment. We
let this one slip by, unintentionally, and we apologize for not
catching it. We do take our policy of checking statements of
fact for accuracy seriously and promise to be more vigilant
about it in future.
Is this fair?
Why have our tags and taxes been doubled when there
are people out of work and in foreclosure? Look at all the
money that was given to the Everglades. I guess the Ever-
glades will have fresh water and we will be living in a tent.
Nighttime safety
Sometimes, I come home late from work, and there are
some people walking their dogs, or a kid riding a bike. On
my road, there are only lights on one side, so it's dark. I've
come close to hitting someone.
It should be a law that they should have a flashlights or
reflectors on so the drivers can see them. Something should
be done about this for their safety, if nothing else.
Citizens need work
How can people with temporary Social Security cards get
jobs before citizens? It's not fair. Someone should investi-
gate.
Stand up to our enemies
When Iran, North Korea and other enemies are develop-
ing nuclear weapons and associated delivery systems, this
is a terrible time to show weakness on defense. However,
President Obama in his first attempt to venture into foreign
affairs has made a serious blunder by canceling our pro-
posed missile shield.
Not only has this appeasement made our allies, Poland
and the Czechs, nervous, apprehensive and angry, it has
demonstrated to the entire world that the United States is
not a trustworthy friend.
Enough from Big Brother
If the Democrats are able to get enough votes in Congress
to pass their cap-and-trade bill, every business in the
nation will be forced to obtain emission allocations from
the government for whatever reason, not only for releasing
CO2 from smokestacks and using energy for production
purposes, but also gasoline for vehicles, propane for space
heaters and any other source of energy.
Do the American people really want the kind of intrusive,
nanny government where virtually every decision is made
for us by Washington?

Nutritional suggestions from L-S
ast week, I presented
super foods from A-K,
adapted from lists put
out by "Environmental
Nutrition" magazine and
the Tufts University "Health
and Nutrition" newsletter.
This week, it's good foods
that are good for you from
L-S.
Mackerel is not my
favorite fish, but if you like
mackerel, it packs a
nutritional punch with
heart-healthy omegs-3
fatty acids. The Tufts
University letter reminds
me to remind you that
small children and preg-
nant women should eat it
sparingly because of the
risk of high levels of
mercury. Check with your
obstetrician or pediatrician
about the safest fish for
these groups.
Milk, skim or low fat,
helps meet nutritional
guidelines for three cups of
dairy products a day. Milk
provides calcium and
vitamin D, essential for
helping to prevent osteo-
porosis.
Oatmeal. We've all seen
the commercials for it, but
the fact is that oatmeal is a
whole grain and has been
shown to lower cholesterol.
It's best to avoid the instant
kind that has a lot of sugar.
Onions and garlic
contain sulfur compounds
that can thin the blood and
lower blood pressure. Red
are best, followed by yellow
and then white.
Okra is another one of
those foods I'm not crazy
about, but it's a good
source of folate and
vitamin C. Fried okra
defeats the possible
cholesterol-lowering
benefits.
Oranges are a great
source of vitamin C and
potassium. It's better to eat
a piece of fruit than to
drink the juice, which adds
a lot of calories without the
good fiber.
Peanut butter is a
protein substitute for
meats high in saturated
fats. Most of the fat in
peanut butter is monosatu-
rated, which is better for
your heart. Just remember,
it has a lot of calories, so go
easy on the portions, and
no dipping the finger in the
jar!
Prunes may get a laugh,
but in addition to fiber,
they contain potassium,
vitamins A and B6 and
antioxidants.
Quinoa, which is
pronounced keen-wah,
made both lists. It's a seed,
not a grain, although it is a
whole-grain option. It has
high-quality protein, lots of
fiber and plenty of magne-
sium, potassium, zinc,
vitamin E and iron.
Romaine lettuce is a
much better choice than
iceberg because it has
vitamins A and C and some
taste. Go easy on the
dressings.
Salmon is a favorite
these days and it has a lot
going for it. It's a good
protein source packed with
omega-3 fatty acids that
your heart loves. Keep the
portions to 3 or 4-ounce
servings. Canned salmon
adds calcium, but often has
a lot of sodium.
Sardines have the same
benefits as salmon and also
contain vitamin D.
Shredded wheat gives
you a good start to your day
and has a lot of magne-
sium, which may lower the
risk of diabetes.
Spinach had to be on
the list. How could Popeye
be wrong? The dark leafy
vegetable has vitamins A
and K and lutein, linked to
a lower risk of macular
degeneration.
There's a lot of nutrition
at the end of the alphabet
and I'll finish it off next
week.

Collect all your ideas with free service
T live in an era
where it is not
uncommon for
one person to depend on
two or more computers.
And it's not just computers.
Where once only geeks
carried PDAs, now we have
smart phones that rival
some desktop systems, in
the hands of just about
anyone who wants one.
Wouldn't it be nice if
there was a way to access
all of the "stuff" that you
were currently working on,
no matter what device you
were on? Imagine being
able to access the notes
you jotted down on your
laptop from in front of your
desktop system, from your
phone, or even from that
computer in hotels next to
the front desk?
I've been playing around
with a free Web service this
past week called Evernote
and Evernote does just
that: it provides a secure
place out there, in the
Internet somewhere, where
you can gather together all
of the thoughts and ideas
that go through your head
on any given day with very
little effort.
Go to www.evernote.com
and click the get started
button. The next page
displays the following text
along with a brief sign up
form and a "captcha"
thing:
"You're moments away
from having perfect
COMPUTE
THIS

"'S
memory! Evernote is ready
to collect all of your ideas,
experiences, thoughts and
memories into an always-
accessible place.
"Take down your inspira-
tions and ideas as they
happen, capture interest-
ingWeb pages you see,
images and all, snap
photos of everything from
whiteboards to wine labels,
and then find it all any
time from your computer,
phone, or the Web!"
Once you fill out the
form and figure out the
captcha thing, click the
register button and you
will be brought to a
confirmation code page.
There you are instructed to
check the e-mail inbox for
the e-mail address you just
entered and look for an e-
mail from Evernote
containing a confirmation
code.
Check your e-mail and
you should find an e-mail
from Evernote with a small,
five to seven character
code. Double click the
code to highlight it, right
click the highlighted code
and then click "copy."
Go back to the Evernote
registration Web page that
we left open and right click
the confirmation code field
and then click "paste." The
confirmation code should
appear in the confirmation
code box.
Make a note of the
username and then click
the complete registration
button to bring you to the
sign in sheet. Verify the
username is correct and
then enter the password
and click sign in.
This brings you to the
Evernote Web interface. It's
kind of a central access
point where all of our
synchronized items can be
accessed without any
special software, which is
great for checking some-
thing from that computer
in the hotel lobby.
But how do these notes
get in here in the first
place? Well, we're not done
yet!
The next thing we want
to do is something that we
want to do from all of the
computers we have daily
access to. At the bottom
left of the Evernote home
page, (the page you get to
after you sign in) you
should see a download
link. Click it and open the
downloads page. This will
ask you where you will be
using Evernote and gives
you options ranging from
Mac OSX to Windows to
Palm Pre, iPhone, Black-
berry and more. Click the
icon representing what
kind of machine you are
installing on and then click
the "get Evernote...."
button.
Download and install the
program just as you would
any other software (and
yes, it's safe. It checks out
just fine) and do the same
for each machine you use
regularly. This way, no
matter what machine you
are using, if something
strikes your fancy and you
want to remember it, you
can just "clip it" right to
Evernote and then all of
your machines will have
access.
Things such as e-mails or
Web pages you want to
remember? Just highlight
the text and send it to
Evernote. You can do
screen captures or even
snag pictures from your
camera and have them
accessible no matter how
you access the Web.
Want to learn more? Log
back into the account you
just created at www.ever-
note.com and click the
about link and then learn
more. This explains what
Evernote is built for and is
bound to trigger some
ideas.
Check it out and I hope
you find it useful. I know I
do.

ast week Akio Toyoda,
the CEO of Toyota,
apologized to his
customers, employees and
stockholders. He said
Toyota had suffered from
"hubris" (overbearing pride
or presumption; arrogance),
"undisciplined pursuit of
more" and "denial of risk
and peril." He said Toyota
now is "grasping for salva-
tion."
Akio Toyoda, who is also
the grandson of Toyota's
founder, then said, "Toyota
has become too big and
distant from its customers."
His confession and
apology is courageous,
refreshing and encouraging.

failures; denial of mistakes
does.
I ordered Jim Collins'
book, "How the Mighty
Fall," on Amazon. The
author postulates that big
companies don't die
suddenly, but rather
through five stages:
Hubris born of success.
Undisciplined pursuit of
more.
Denial of risk and peril.
Grasping for salvation.
Capitulation to irrele-
vance or death.
I must say these stages
describe General Motors,
Chrysler, Ford and even
Toyota to a T. In fact, GM
and Chrysler may be in, or
too near, the final stage 5,
capitulation, irrelevance, or
death.
I was a Pontiac dealer in
West Palm Beach from
1968-99. I have lots of
memories of those times,
good and bad.
The good times were
when Pontiac was the
fourth largest selling brand
in the world, behind
Chevrolet, Ford and
Oldsmobile. Pontiac and
GM thought Japanese cars
were inferior and no threat
whatsoever. I still remember
the day in 1970 when the
Pontiac zone manager,
Murph Martin, visited my
dealership and told me to
get that "Jap" car off his
showroom floor. He was
referring to a Mazda, as I
had just signed a franchise
agreement with that
Japanese auto manufactur-

Today Pontiac no longer
exists, but Mazda is still
going strong.

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "Mv CM

Virtually every car dealer Of eauca
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a Sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much high
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.
Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
towers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
atitn are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff" that has come to
er today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.
Sincerely,

one GM brand listed in the

top 10 brands are all Asian.
The bottom 10 includes
GMC truck, Pontiac,
Cadillac and Saturn.
Chevrolet is No. 24, 11th
from the bottom.
But what about car
dealers? In my opinion, we
car dealers also have
succumbed to the same
temptations as manufactur-
ers. Great success brings on
hubris/arrogance. Big is
never big enough and so we
strive for more in an
undisciplined fashion.
When you make a lot of
money and get lots of
recognition, you feel "bullet
proof." Can you say Bernie
Madoff? How many of us
find ourselves in stage 4
"grasping for salvation," like
Akio Toyoda now?
In order to successfully
manage stage 4, a business
owner or CEO must be
courageous, but more
importantly, he must have
self awareness.
Mark Twain said, "It ain't
what you don't know that
gets you in trouble; it's what
you know for sure that just
ain't so."
I have to confess, that
occasionally, I start to feel a
little "full of myself." I've
grown to be the largest
seller of automobiles in
Palm Beach County, the fifth
largest Toyota dealer in the
southeast U.S. When I go
out to a restaurant or
shopping, lots of people
recognize me and shake my
hand. Now when I get that
feeling that I'm a "big shot,"
I simply remind myself who
it was that "brung me to the
dance:" my customers.

VOLUSIA COUNTY -
Daytona Beach Shores is a
small community with 4,500
residents, but it is capable of
hosting up to 30,000 visitors
during special events, such as
BikeWeek.
The city is also home to the
Shores Spa Resort and Hotel
and the Living Legends of
Auto Racing Hall of Fame
BrickWalk.
Living Legends of Racing is
a nonprofit organization that
oversees the Walk of Fame
located at 3050 South
Atlantic Ave.
The bricks are dedicated to
former great racing pioneers
and highlights the area's rac-
ing legacy.
"The history of the whole
racing thing started here,"
said Olin Hopes, a member
or Living Legends of Auto
Racing. "It started up in
Ormond and reached Day-
tona by the (19)30s then
came down in this area in the
(19)40s. The sport went
inland in the 50s when the
Speedway was built."
Many great racing legends
are commemorated in the
bricks, including William
"Bill" France, Mad Marion
MacDonald, Rapid Roy Hall,
Ethel Flock Mobley, Vicki
Wood, James Jerome "Red"
Voigt and more.
"If you are a racing fan it's
nice to see," Mr. Hopes said.
"People don't realize that
where City Hall sits at in the
Shores is part of the old race
track and grand stand. A1A
was also part of the old track.
It all had to be moved, basi-
cally, because people could
not make it to their homes."
The group also runs the

The resort contains warm

"It's really a cool and fun

is refreshing and quiet and at
this time of year we are not as
busy, so locals can really take
advantage."
Just south of the Shores, in
Ponce Inlet, is one of the
state's most recognizable
attraction: the Ponce de Leon
Inlet Light Station, located at
4391 Peninsula Drive. It
stands 175 feet tall and is the
tallest lighthouse in Florida.
It is also the second tallest
masonry lighthouse in the
nation.
The 203-step structure
attracts 175,000 visitors a
year. Admission is $5 per
adult and $1.50 per child

Police said the 34-year-

It had no way of knowing

Are we atheists?
The Pope's successful visit

President Obama mistak-

MARTIN COUNTY -
Make a slight turn off Kan-

and several worlds await.
An unassuming restau-
rant at this intersection
offers a meeting of several
culinary worlds.
With Thai, Japanese and
Filipino entrees, Dresa
Sushi and Asian Fusion
serves up several eastern
favorites, including bulgo-
gi or Korean barbeque.
"We've got a little bit of
everything," says propri-
etor Elsa Zamora, whose
casual, friendly style
makes her feel like an old
friend.
And as I dined at Dresa
on a recent Friday evening,
I realize that's part of the
restaurant's appeal; the
way its food seems all at
once familiar and exotic.
Take the escabeche, for
instance. The Filipino dish
is reminiscent of a Chi-
nese-style, sweet-and-sour
entree, but with ginger, red
peppers, onions and gar-
lic, this dish offers a
sophisticated and deli-
cious burst of flavor.
On its sushi menu, the
Stuart roll features fried
grouper with mayonnaise
and scallions, while the
spicy reggae roll combines
tuna, Wahoo, scallions,
kimchee sauce and masa-
go.

priced at less than $5,
along with a kitchen that
stays open until 1 a.m.
On Saturdays, the

patrons who spend $15.
It celebrates "happy
hour" daily and all day
long, with $5-martinis and
draft and well beers at buy-
one-get-one-free rates. My
favorite drink, dubbed the
saketini, is one of Ms.
Zamora's delicious cre-
ations.
On Sunday, local musi-

Lyric show to be mix of funk, jazz
By Shelley Koppel

STUART The Neville
Brothers, often called
New Orleans' "First Fami-
ly of Funk," are enjoying a
rebirth similar to the city
they love.
They kicked off the year
with a Mardi Gras
mambo tour with Dr. J,
toured in the spring with
Neil Young and made a
trip to Morocco, where
they performed at a festi-
val with Alicia Keys and
Stevie Wonder.
The Neville Brothers:
Aaron, Cyril, Art and
Charles, come to the
Lyric Theatre on Oct. 16.
Charles Neville, who now
lives in Massachusetts,
spoke recently about the
music and their home-
town, New Orleans.
Charles Neville was the
first of the brothers to
leave home, when, at 15,
he joined the Navy.

really jumping and I said,

with blues and jazz. B.B.

Update on local
teen artist
Country singer Jernie of
Fort Pierce spent the sum-
mer at NOISE 2009, a music
camp in Nashville. She was
one of only 32 youngsters
chosen to attend the camp
and learn about the music
industry and meet with
record executives as well as
teens from around the
country.
Jernie now attends Indian
River Charter School in Vero
Beach because of its fine
arts program. A sophomore,
she has just been picked to
play the narrator in "Joseph
and the Amazing Technicol-
or Dreamcoat." The show
will be presented later in the
season.
Ghost hunt at Sunrise
The Florida Ghost Team is
investigating "bumps in the
night" and other unusual
occurrences at the Sunrise
Theatre in Fort Pierce.
Shaun Jones, director of
Florida Ghost Teams, says
the group attempted to veri-
fy paranormal events they
previously encountered.
They will try to gather voice
recordings, take photos and
attempt to capture any
movements.
All lights in the theater
will be turned off during the
investigation, including the
traditional ghost light, a
bare light bulb left on
overnight in the theater.

got to play in his band. I
found a club where
bebop jam sessions
were held and I learned
a lot from being around
those guys.
"When I first started
playing jazz sax, Charlie
Parker was the bebop
master. That was mod-
ern jazz then. I guess it's
old jazz now. It was
what I gravitated
toward, although I was
steeped in funk."
The Neville Brothers
were raised in the Thir-
teenth Ward in New
Orleans and Aaron
Neville lost his home in
Hurricane Katrina. They
returned as a band to
return to Jazzfest in
2008 and give the city a
boost.
"The city isn't doing
that well," Mr. Neville
said. "There are some
improvements and
recovery, but one-third
of the city is missing.
People are trying to
help. My wife's there
now.
"Brad Pitt's Make it
Right Foundation and
Common Ground have
built some houses that
are more sustainable
and green. They're try-
ing to get a training pro-
gram to help people
learned to work with the
new materials. Some of
the neighborhoods are
coming back, but there
are still ghost towns," he
said.
A Neville Brothers
show is a trip through
musical history, starting
with their boyhood days
in the Big Easy.
"We started playing in
the 1950s," Mr. Neville
said. "We play all of the
eras of music since
then. There's classic
Neville Brothers funk
and things from the
Neville Brothers song-
book from the '70s on
up to now.
"There's a little jazz, a
little Latin salsa, some
Cuban, maybe some
country and a little
gospel. The music feels
good and makes you
want to dance. We real-
ly mean it. We don't pre-
tend to put on a show.
It's what we feel and
what's in our heart."

MARTIN COUNTY A
group of young philanthro-
pists plans to bring back a
piece of the Martin County
Library System's storied
history.
"The Story Express," the
library system's bookmo-
bile, was purchased in 1985
and decommissioned in
2002.
A burdened economy
and the increasing cost of
fuel have created a height-
ened need for a new book-
mobile to service Martin
County's community mem-
bers unable to come to the
library, including stops at
local child care centers,
nursing homes and com-
munity centers.
The Library Night Owls, a
sub-committee of the
Friends of the Martin
County Library System, is
led by Justin and Kelly
Beard, Tara Biek, Stephen
Leighton and Tori Savard.
The committee was
recently established to help
raise money to maintain
and operate a new book-
mobile, as well as attract
patrons and increase
awareness of library pro-
grams and resources.
The group has organized
a "Library After Hours"
social networking event
series rotating through
each of the library's six
branches from 6 to 8 p.m.
the first Tuesday of each
month remaining in 2009,
as well as Jan. 12 and Feb. 5,
2010.
Money raised from the
$10 admission charge,
which includes two drinks,
hors d'oeuvres and enter-
tainment, will help fund a
larger community event in
March 2010, where all pro-
ceeds will go toward the
"Bring Back the Story
Express/ Bookmobile
Fund."
Library After Hours is
made possible thanks to
the generosity of the
Friends of the Martin
County Library System,
Leighton Security Manage-
ment, Smith Barney and
Tara Biek Creative.

event, call (772) 283-0019.

It's because of forgiveness,
compassion and loyalty.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
You handle responsibility
very well. You know and do
what is expected of a
leader; such a strong con-
science. Don't forget that
you need nurturing, too.
Take a break. Slow down. If
your heart isn't in it, don't
do it. Your best ideas sur-
face when you are relaxed
and feeling happy. Now we
all share your renewed joy.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
Say this out loud each
morning upon arising: "My
life is filled with joy, peace,
love, health and abun-
dance. I gladly share my
abundance with others. I
take time each day to be
alone with my source to
heal, renew and be
inspired. This is my day. I
see God in everyone. I am
richly blessed and so grate-
ful."

Site tracks kids' info.
For Hometown News
News@hometownnewsol.com
A new Web site helps par-
ents keep track of information
about their children.
Kidashboard.com was cre-
ated by parents and for par-
ents who are endlessly col-
lecting information vital to
their kids' lives but leaving it
in different places, such as the
refrigerator door, a bulletin
board or somewhere in their
computers.
Kidashboard.com lets par-
ents keep the information in
one place where it can be
shared with other adults who
need access to the informa-
tion.
Kids never log onto the site,
It costs $20 for the first child
and $10 per additional child
or when renewing.
Parents or caregivers create
a child's account and each
folder can contain an infinite
number of topics.
When a child is first sub-
scribed, default topics, such
as after school activities, med-
ical history, homework, emer-
gency contacts and school
friends, among others, are
automatically included.
But parents can delete what
they want and create their
own custom topics. If parents
can think of a topic, they can
add it.
And unlike social network-
ing sites, Kidashboard.com
allows parents to control the
information, deciding who
they want viewing specific
information about their child
or children.
For example, parents might
choose to share emergency
contact information with a
soccer coach or babysitter.
Viewers see only what par-
ents want them to see and get
e-mail alerts when a parent
has updated information.
For more information visit
kidashboard.com or e-mail
renee@kidashboard.com.

Getting ready for
the Anderson Cup
In keeping with a tradi-
tion started in fall 2003,
the Saints Golf Course at
Port St. Lucie on Morning-
side Boulevard is once again
hosting a match play
championship that is open
to all golfers.
The sixth annual Ander-
son Cup will take place
from Nov. 7-15.
Originally named the
"Saints Cup," the match
play event was renamed in
honor of the late Jim
Anderson, a long-time Port
St. Lucie resident, city
councilman, golf enthusiast
and Saints supporter.
The match play champi-
onship was one of the Jim's
favorite events and one
would be sure to find him
around the leader board
congratulating qualifiers
and giving his opponents a
little good-natured razzing.
His enthusiasm for the
game and competition is
deeply missed, and his
friends and fellow golfers
have kept his memory and
love for the game and his
community alive with this
event.
Now it's your turn to join
the fun and play in a
championship event like no
other in the area.
Most recreational golfers
and amateurs have compet-
ed with our friends in
match play or watched the
Ryder Cup matches, but
have never really played in a
championship using the
format.
Some of us may have
played in county amateur
championships, but very
few have enjoyed competi-
tion the old-fashioned
Scottish way.
Match play was how the
game was originally con-
tested. Golfers would play
for each hole, the lowest
score winning. Whoever
won the most holes over the
18-hole match was the
winner.
Usually, you find a match
play event at a private club.
There really is nothing like it
for amateurs who play
public golf. With that in
mind, former head profes-
sional, Phil Henry, started
the event, which has gone
on to become a favorite of
golfers from the area.
It begins with an 18-hole
stroke-play qualifier on Nov.
7. The low 64 qualifiers
advance to the match play
GOLF Ift
JAMES
STAMMER
segment of the event. From
there, golfers will be flighted
and matched up against an
opponent. The pair will play
their match the following
day, Nov. 8.
The field will be reduced
over the following week
until there are only four
golfers remaining. The
semi-final matches will take
place on Nov. 14, with the
18-hole final match sched-
uled for Nov. 15.
The Anderson Cup
Treasure Coast Match Play
Championship is open to all
amateurs, 16 or older.
Entrants can be year-round
or part-time residents of
Indian River, St. Lucie,
Martin or Okeechobee
counties.
The entry fee for the
entire competition is $100.
It includes all green fees,
cart, range balls for each
round and prizes.
If you advance past the
18-hole qualifier, this
becomes a pretty inexpen-
sive way to get in some
great golf in a competitive
setting. On the entry form,
you can select your prefer-
ence of starting time for the
Saturday qualifier, with
groups going out beginning
at 7:30 a.m. The deadline for
entry is noon on Tuesday,
Nov. 3. Tee times for the 18-
hole qualifier will be posted
after 7 a.m. on Wednesday,
Nov. 4.

However, when a fraud
alert goes out, sometimes
it has a ripple effect.
Our stores learn that a
new counterfeit coupon
has been spotted in
circulation. Instead of
homing in on the specific
coupon mentioned in the
alert, some cashiers may
find it easier not to accept
any Internet coupons. This
not only hurts shoppers, it
hurts stores, too, since the
large number of Internet
coupons are legitimate
and perfectly fine for the
store to accept.
Marketers reimburse
stores for the full value of
every coupon shoppers
redeem, whether the
coupon ran in the news-
paper, appeared in
newspaper inserts, was
found on a product
package or was printed
legitimately from the
Internet.
Would you like another
piece of the
cashier/coupon policy
puzzle? I've heard from
many cashiers that they
get very little training on
their store's coupon policy.
This puts coupon-savvy
shoppers in an unusual
situation. It's possible that
you may be more familiar
with a store's coupon
policy than the cashier is.
If you find yourself in this
situation, never force the

cashier to check the store's
policy with the manager.
You can politely let the
cashier know that you've
read it to make sure that
all of the coupons you're
presenting are acceptable.
A cashier issue most
likely stems from a little
confusion that isn't the
cashier's fault at all. A
cashier who questions
your coupons may simply
be trying to protect the
store and do what they
believe is right. We'll
continue to discuss
commonly heard cashier
coupon issues in the
weeks ahead.

Winners of each flight
will receive gift certifi-
cates. The winner of the
championship flight gets
the prestigious Anderson
Cup. Runners-up will also
win prizes and perhaps
bragging rights over their
golf buddies.
The Saints features a
fantastic clubhouse where,
after their matches, golfers
will be able to swap
stories, while enjoying the
full-service bar and grill.
The restaurant is open well
into the evening offering a
full menu including steak,
seafood and other
favorites. Even non-golfers
can find a relaxing spot to
wait for their golfer to
finish.
In addition to the
clubhouse, improvements
around the course are
plentiful, as well. The
landscaping added over
the past few years has had
time to mature and
become a part of the
course.

the Anderson Cup or to
