Spend any time surfing

that are just too bizarre to

Giant baby draws
spectators to Indonesian
hospital
From sfgate.com: Indone-
sia's heaviest-ever newborn
drew curious crowds Friday
to a hospital where the boy
named Akbar or the
great in Arabic came into
the world at a record 19.2
pounds.
Akbar Risuddin was born
to a diabetic mother in a
40-minute cesarean
delivery that was compli-
cated because of his
unusual weight and size,
Dr. Binsar Sitanggang said.
The baby's extreme
weight was the result of
excessive glucose from his
mother during pregnancy,
Dr. Sitanggang said.
Guinness World Records
cites the heaviest baby as
being born in the U.S. in
1879, weighing 23.75
pounds (10.4 kilograms).
However, it died 11 hours
after birth.

Real estate navigator is latest

By Samantha Joseph

MARTIN COUNTY An online
tool that produces demographic
reports, maps and can point out the
nearest schools, flood zones, golf
courses and hospitals is the latest
magnet for attracting investors to
Martin County.
The Business Development Board
of Martin County, the area's official
economic development arm,
launched a mapping tool that
administrators say will give prospec-
tive investors a ready summary, not
only of properties in Martin County,
but of area amenities and incentives
as well.
Its MartinCountyProspector.com
Web site aims to give visitors a ready
look at commercial property, allow-
ing them to view available buildings
and zoom in and out on maps.
But in addition to its real estate
features, the site offers demographic
information,

When the Jeep he was
driving with two of his
friends crashed on Aug. 4
on Cove Road near Hobe
Sound, the teen behind
the wheel was drunk,
authorities say.
Nicholas Coady, age 18,
had a blood alcohol level
of 0.251, more than three
times the legal limit,
according to a report
from the Florida Highway
Patrol.
Mr. Coady, of Stuart,
was driving with Christo-
pher Harold Briglio, also
18, of Tequesta, and Con-
nor William Graver, 17, of
ed to plan the 10-hour trek
across 600 miles to pick up
Pyper.
The 4-year-old dog is at
the center of an ongoing
animal abuse court case,
the Bracketts, who live in
Stuart, have learned, but
know little else about
Pyper's past, except that
she narrowly escaped
euthanasia.
"I just fell in love with

died as a result of the
crash, when the Jeep
Grand Cherokee they
were riding in collided
with a John Deere front-
end loader and over-
turned, according to offi-
cials of the Florida
Highway Patrol.
The driver of the
loader, 25-year-old Pedro
Perez-Espinosa, of Okee-
chobee, was unharmed.
Toxicology reports
released last week
showed no alcohol or
drugs in Mr. Perez-
Espinosa's system.

tion of Cruelty to Animals
"I felt she looked sad

It was a big step for the
Bracketts, who had lost a
long-time pet, and had
long searched for a
replacement.
Their bold move brought
them a loving companion,
and they say despite the
setbacks, they are grateful
for the love the affection-
ate dog has brought to
their lives.
They also want to share
their story to encourage
pet adoption from shelters

Symposium
to prepare
employers
for HIN1
For Hometown News
News@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY At
the onset of the flu season, a
Health Department-spon-
sored workshop aims to
help prepare employers for
a potential pandemic in the
workplace.
The course is organized
by the Corporate and Com-
munity Training Institute of
Indian River State College,
and brings together speak-
ers from across South Flori-
da and the state to discuss
H1N1 or swine flu, called an
international pandemic.
"The key thing is that
employers will walk away
and gain great knowledge in
case something does hap-
pen and their entire work-
force is sick at home," said
Jan Pagano, associate dean.
"They would need to know
what to do, because they
would still have to continue
with their business."
The symposium is set for
Oct. 7 at the Kight Center,
on IRSC's main campus in
Fort Pierce.
It focuses on several legal
and human resources
issues, including employer
obligations to workers'
health and safety during a
pandemic.
Among the topics up for
discussion: liability
involved with offering free
swine flu vaccines; steps to
take if an employee displays
flu symptoms; handling
abuses of sick time and
workplace pandemic plan-
ning.
"People will be chocked
full of information that they
need, not only to protect
themselves from the flu, but
professionally and finan-
cially, as well," Ms. Pagano
said.
Speakers include Jean
Kline, director of the Divi-
sion of Emergency Medical
Operations for Florida's
Department of Health; Car-
rie Cherveny, employee
relations and employment
litigation attorney; Mark
Chittum, administrator,
Martin County Health
Department and Larry Lee,
administrator of the St.
Lucie County Health
Department.
"It's important because
businesses have to be pre-
pared in case their employ-
ees do get sick. They need to
know their rights as
employers and the rights of
their employees," Ms.
Pagano said.
The H1N1 Business Sym-
posium costs $19, and
includes a continental
breakfast.

After they'd seen pictures
of Pyper posted online by a
rescue organization in
South Carolina last July, the
couple felt they had found
their new companion.
But once they arrived at
the country farmhouse, and
came face-to-face with the
80-pound dog, they were
filled with doubt.
"Pyper was a mess," Mr.
Brackett wrote in an essay
about the experience. "All
our hopes and planning,
years of waiting, and the
poor thing was a sorry sight.
Her white coat was ruined,
stained with urine. She had
open sores, hot spots,
bloody teeth and the tips of
her ears (were) nearly
gnawed off by flies and mos-
quitoes."
Minutes later, they were
loading the dog into their
SUV and heading back to
Florida.
The rest, the Bracketts say,
is history. Pyper now follows
Mr. Brackett around in his
home office and often rests
her head against his knee.

"This is where she wants
to be," Mr. Brackett said.
The family's success story
is not usual, and pet adop-
tions are on the rise again,
say local officials.
The Humane Society of
the Treasure Coast, for
instance, reported 16 adop-
tions on a recent Saturday
and 10 the following Tues-
day, an early indicator that
residents are no longer
abandoning animals, but
looking to make homes for
pets.
"We're starting to see a
renewed interest, where
before it was kind of slow,"
said Sharie Turgeon, adop-
tion manager.
The local shelter has
about 40 dogs, 20 cats or kit-
tens and 12 other critters,
including rabbits, gerbils
and hamsters, available for
adoption.
Adoption fees range from
$100 to $5, and can include
services such as spaying and
neutering, vaccinations,
microchips for pet identifi-
cation, several tests and free
food.
"You get a lot of services
for a minimal price, and the
love of a lifetime," Ms. Tur-

The shelter is located at
4100 S.W. Leighton Farms
Ave., Palm City.

At the time of the crash,
law enforcement officials
speculated about the
involvement of alcohol, and
said they suspected the
teens were drinking and
speeding.
In the days following the
crash, hundreds of teens
and residents rallied around
the grieving families and
created makeshift memori-
als for the teens.
Meanwhile, local law
enforcement officials con-
tinue undercover opera-
tions to prevent alcohol
sales to minors.
Detectives with the Mar-
lin County's Sheriff's Office
Criminal Investigations Unit
and the Division of Alco-
holic Beverages and Tobac-
co visited 25 stores in Sep-
tember as part of a sting
operation to see whether
these businesses would sell
alcohol to a decoy working
with law enforcement offi-
cials.

investigators reported.

SILVER HISTORY
There was a concentrated
effort to mine silver sometime
after 3000B.C. The first sophis-
ticated processing of silver ore
was attributed to the Chaldeans
in about 2500 B.C., who used a
"cupellation" process to extract
silver from lead-silver ores. The
need for traditional silver (par-
ticularly for the flourishing
Minoan and later Mycenaean
civilizations) resulted in the
location and exploitation of sil-
ver deposits in what is now
Armenia. The area of Anatolia
(modern Turkey) is considered
the first major source of mined
silver, having provided the
resource to craftsmen through-
out Asia Minor. The Anatolian
region served as the major
source of silver for the Western
cultures flourishing in the Near
East, Crete, and Greece. The
Laurium mines were highly pro-
ductive; estimated from histori-
cal writings and physical evi-
dence from old mine dumps
indicate silver production to
have been about 1 million troy
ounces per year during the
height of production (600B.C. to
300 B.C.). In fact, for about
1,000 years ending around the
1st century A.D., the Laurium
mines were the largest individ-
ual source of world silver pro-
duction. Outside the Laurium
mines, production was concen-
trated mainly in Asia Minor,
Sardinia, and other Grecian
locations and, to a limited
extent, in Asia. Today the
demand for silver is built on
three main areas: industrial
uses, photography and jewelry
& silverware. We are always
available to examine your items
to determine if they are silver
and to purchase them if you
would like. Please don't hesi-
tate to stop in with your goods
and we will look at them for no
charge.

Gambler claims casino

From news.aol.com: A
Detroit man has filed a

casino, claiming the gaming
business is at fault for
"brainwashing" him and

Italo Mario Parise, 61, is

Parise after he lost big.
Gambling law experts,
including legal briefs filed

that the law applies to illegal
casinos, not legal ones, and
that finding in Parise's favor

industry.
The law dates back to
1827, Parise's lawyer, Frank
A. Cusumano, told the
newspaper. Parise said
hasn't gambled since March

"EARL
EARL STEWART STEWART
STOYOTA
An Open Letter to Florida Car Dealers.
Eliminate the "Dealer Fee".
Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "Mvy c
am suggesting a change that
will reward both you and your expectat
customers.
Virtually every car dealer of educ
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a SophistiU
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much high
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
E NT and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
ire wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
one and when I stopped charging it a few years
your ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
way no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
Oul customers. Just because everybody else
ed, was doing the same thing, did not make it
us. correct.

Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
tomers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
nation are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff' that has come to
ter today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.

Callers are asked to refrain from making slanderous

Racist move?
I'm deeply concerned about the extreme level of racism
in our county and the school board's attempt to censor our
president's speech, which only encouraged education and
keeping them in school and get an education.
If this wasn't blatant racism, I don't know what it was. The
right-winged Christian, lunatic fringe has gone too far. We
are a mulit-cultural, multi-racial society. Get over it and find
something to do to help your fellow man.
Limiting our choices
When purchasing an automobile, Americans face the
prospect of being forced to choose between vehicles, which
are smaller, lighter, less safe and more expensive.
We can thank President Obama, his Department of Trans-
portation and the Environmental Protection Agency for
these very limited and unpleasant choices.
As the government moves to take over more and more of
the auto industry, bureaucrats admit that the new proposed
rules will add $600 to the price of the average car. It is up to
us to protest this outrage before the government's new reg-
ulations go into effect.
Treat congress like a corporation
If the federal government was a private corporation, its
performance has been so poor that the price of the stock
would plummet, the stockholders would be furious, they
would kick out the managers and they would bring in new
management and directors to right the ship.
That is exactly what we, the voters, should do to congress-
men who have demonstrated they are profligate spenders
who are creating a train wreck.
Criminals belong in jail
A man has been convicted for stealing $20 from a tod-
dler's piggy bank, and we wonder why he was not in jail for
his previous offenses.
We also wonder if there is any accountability on the part
of the justice system because this low life has four previous
convictions.
Tell the truth
Every American should respect the office of the president.
Clearly, one should not shout out that the president is a liar.
However, it is also obvious that the president is not telling
the whole truth about illegal immigrants getting health care
here in the United States. They can get it and they are get-
ting it, completely free and at the expense of the American
taxpayer.
Irresponsible dog owners ruin it for everyone
I have a rant about irresponsible dog owners. Before I start,
let me state that I am a dog lover and believe dogs play an
important role in many of our lives. But irresponsible dog own-
ers are ruining it for all of us.
Just the other day, my young son and I were walking on the
Beach when we saw a dog owner walking three large dogs
about 200 yards away. As the owner approached us, she decid-
ed to put one of the animals on a leash, but let the other two
continue to roam.
Does FPL get it?
Like so many others who have written into the rants and
raves about the increases that FPL keeps trying to get done, I
have a question.
If the people of Florida, who are fed up with all the rate hikes
and the extreme power and water bills made their homes com-
pletely solar, installed wind power on their property and got
themselves completely self sufficient so that FPL was no longer
needed, do you think that they would get the message?
I used to live in LasVegas, which as all know is a desert.
Our monthly water bill was less than $20 a month. Our
power bill was always less than $100 per month, so I really do
wonder why the prices of these two items are so much higher
here?
My suggestions to FPL is all the big shots take pay cuts and
cut their costs that way.

Nutrition from the letters A to L
I recently got two lists of
healthy foods. One was
compiled by Tufts
University and the other by
the publication, "Environ-
mental Nutrition."
Each chose a selection of
foods that fill health needs.
I've decided to take the 66
choices and narrow them
down, reminding you that
just about any fruit and
vegetable could be on the
list and many nutritious
foods have similar benefits.
Acorn squash or its
relative, butternut squash,
is filled with beta-carotene,
an antioxidant.
Bananas are a good
source of magnesium and
potassium, which help
prevent bone loss and are
good for the heart.
Blueberries are antioxi-
dant powerhouses and
have lots of fiber and
vitamin C. All berries are
good choices.
Broccoli. Yes, mom was
right about the benefits of
green, leafy vegetables.
Most Americans need to
double or triple their
intake. Brussel sprouts and
cauliflower are also good
choices
Brown rice is just one of
the whole grains that
should replace processed
foods.
Canola oil has the least
amount of saturated fat of
all of the fat sources.
Remember it has calories,
too, as a fat, so use it
sparingly.
Carrots are another
excellent source of vitamin
A.
Chicken breast, without
the skin, is a good source of
lean protein without a lot of
fat. Broil, bake or grill them.
Frying defeats the purpose.
Cranberry juice is a
good source of vitamin C
and seems to protect
against many urinary tract
infections. Try the light or
diet type to avoid extra
sugar, a problem with
almost all juices. Cranberry
juice can interact with
blood thinners, so talk to
your doctor.
Flaxseed is a good
source of omega-3 fatty
acids, the same kind found
in salmon and oily fish.
Sprinkle some on cereal or
yogurt or add to batter.
Kale is another vitamin
A-rich green leafy veg-
etable with lutein for eye
health. Eat collards,
spinach and turnip greens,
as well.
Kidney beans are rich
in fiber and protein, as well
as potassium, magnesium
and folate. All beans are
good alternate sources of
protein, but the Tufts
report says to avoid canned
beans, which have a lot of
additional salt.
Kiwi, which is actually a
berry, is one of the most
nutrient-rich fruits. Two
kiwis have more potassium
than a banana, two times
the vitamin C and fiber of a
small orange, and add
folate, magnesium, vitamin
E, copper and lutein to the
mix, too.
Lentils are loaded with
protein and iron and are
easy to cook, which makes
them a good alternate
protein source.
Next week, I'll take the
nutrition alphabet from M-
Z.

Resizing pictures suitable for e-mail
A after fielding several e-
mails from readers
S regarding a recent
column, I thought I would
write some instructions
aimed at helping people
understand how to opti-
mize images for e-mail
before sending.
As one reader, Steve,
points out, "the senders
need to know not only that
they should be resizing
their pictures before
sending, but also how to
resize them."
Well, Steve is right, of
course. I, however, was
reluctant to try to write
universal instructions on
how to optimize images for
e-mail because of the wide
variety of image editors out
there. Programs such as
Photo Shop, Paint Shop Pro
and myriad picture editing
programs that come
bundled with all the
different digital cameras
and scanners that are
available these days made
the idea seem a challenge.
But then I had an idea:
why not write a column
that not only teaches
people how to optimize
pictures but also showcases
one of my favorite new Web
services (or Web apps)
called Aviary, a free host of
online image editing tools.
I figured if I go through
the steps using Aviary's
image editor (called
Phoenix) then I could kill
two birds with one stone
COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
and maybe avoid the flood
of e-mails from well
meaning folks all trying to
tell me "the right way" to
handle the task.
OK, fire up your Web
browsers, enter
www.aviary.com into your
address bar and hit enter.
This brings you to Aviary's
home page where you can
see all of the services that
are available all of them
free.
For this task we will be
using Phoenix, the image
editor, but take a good look
around. This site has an
incredible amount of good
information, quality
tutorials, excellent tools
and the people behind the
site are none other than the
folks behind
www.worthl000.com-
where daily photoshop
contests produce some of
the most amazing pictures
ever to make it onto the
Web.
Now, before we begin, we
need to create a free
account. Click the "get
started" button and fill out
the forms (I skipped past
the whole "find friends
thing" and clicked the
"continue to dashboard"
link).
Next, I click the "image
editor, Phoenix" button to
launch the image editor
and wait a moment for it to
load. When the splash
screen opens, I click the
"load an existing file"
button and then the
"browse" button. I have an
image ready for this a
satellite picture of Hurri-
cane Frances that weighs in
at a little over 3 MB. (That's
much too large for general
e-mail. We want to try to
get that size down to 200k
or less.) So I navigate to
Frances.jpg in my "my
pictures" folder and then
click upload.
After waiting about the
same amount of time it
would take for someone to
download this picture into
their e-mail inbox, the
picture shows up in
Phoenix's work area. Next
we click the image pull
down menu at the top left
of the screen and then click
image resize. The next
window shows our picture's
dimensions, its width and
height, along with a
checkbox that's labeled
constrain proportion. I'm
going to take the top
(width) number (in this
case, 800) and reduce it
down to about .33 percent
(I take 800 and multiply it
by .33 to get 264).
Next, I click the height
field and, since the con-
strain checkbox is checked,
that number reduces to the
correct number as well and
then I click apply. This
reduces our picture, but
now we have to get it back
into our "my pictures"
folder so we can attach it to
e-mail.
Click the file pull-down
menu, then click export
image. In the next window
I'm going to change the
type from .PNG to .JPG and
then click generate image. I
wait a moment or two for it
to render and then click the
green download button.
Next, a standard save as
dialogue box open and I
make sure my my pictures
is open and I change the
name of the file to
Frances2.jpg so I can find it
later and click save.
Now, when I navigate
back to my pictures folder
and find my Frances2.jpg
file, I can see that it is 188k,
far smaller than the original
3 megs and much better for

I manufacturers and
dealers, Automotive
News, predicted September
2009 would be the worst retail
month for retailing automo-
biles in 28 years.
Nevertheless, virtually all
manufacturers have
increased their output of new
vehicles based on the huge
response to "cash for clunk-

with '
ers" in late July and most of
August.
Adding these two facts
together, very low demand
and very high inventories,
translates into a "buyer's
market" for new automobiles.
Inventories are building
rapidly after being severely
depleted in August. The
manufacturers are gambling
the 700,000 new vehicles that
were sold by trading in a
clunker were mostly plus
business. They want to
believe most of those sales
were to buyers who would
not have bought a car if the
government had not given
them $4,500 or $3,500 for
their clunker.
What happened in Septem-
ber, an absolutely terrible
retail month for car dealers,
suggests otherwise.
It suggests the cars dealers
sold in late July and August
were to people who would
have bought anyway, but
moved up their purchase to
take advantage of the "cash
for clunkers" program. Car
sales were very bad before
"cash for clunkers" and they
could get much worse
afterwards. Add to that the
overreaction of the manufac-
turers of building and
shipping too many new

If you are in the market for

for the next 30 to 60 days. Car
production is not like a

it'll take them another two
months to "shut off the

and generally do whatever
they can to move that excess
inventory. The dealers will
be doing the same thing.
Please remember that
"dealer desperation" can
work against you as well as
for you. Expect to see
deceptive advertising
increase in direct propor-
tion to the size of dealers'
inventories. When shopping
for a car expect to be told "if
you sign in now and drive
the car home today, I will
give you a special price" or
"this price is good today
only." Never, ever buy a car
on the first day that you
begin shopping. It should
take you at least two weeks
of due diligence and
competitive price shopping
before you can make an
intelligent decision.

online auction began Oct. 1
at www.cmarket.com and
includes everything from
works of art by the Florida
Highwaymen to trips to
Hawaii, the Bahamas and
Cancun.
Bidding will close online
Oct. 22, and then re-open

silent auction at the fourth
annual Toyota of Stuart Le
Bal Masque at Willoughby
Golf Club, in Stuart.
"We wanted to open the
auction up to the entire com-

Christina Kaiser, United for
Families community rela-

"It's a great way to reach
more people our message

money for the Road to Suc-

United for Families' Road
to Success program teaches
independent-living skills to
teenage foster children and
prepares them for life outside

not acknowledged as a
group until the 1990s, when
Jim Fitch, art collector and
curator, named them in a
1995 article on antiques and
art around Florida. The
paintings are very desirable
to collectors of both folk and
African-American Art.
Also located in Fort Pierce
is Harbor Branch Oceano-
graphic Institution, once a
privately funded oceano-
graphic research center now
merged with Florida Atlantic
University, the U.S. Navy
UDT SEAL Museum, for
those interested in the
history of Navy SEAL
training, and the Smithson-
ian Marine Ecosystems
Exhibit. Those interested in
marine life would not be
bored with these options.
Boating is a popular
activity particularly because
you have the City Marina
running alongside the city.
The marina was wiped out
by Hurricane Frances in
2004 when all of the floating
docks were gone when the
storm was over. They have
been rebuilding ever since.
The entrance is now much
closer to the inlet.
Golf seems to be part of
the Florida lifestyle in
general and Fort Pierce is no
different. There are many
courses, both private and
public, including Indian
Hills Golf Course that has
been a cornerstone of Fort
Pierce since 1938.
For those who enjoy the
performing arts, the recently
renovated Sunrise Theatre
opened for live performanc-
es. Originally built in 1923,
the doors were closed in
1983.
The Fort Pierce Preserva-
tion Association purchased
the theatre in 1997 and
renovated it. It is now being
used once again as the
cultural center of St. Lucie
County and the Treasure
Coast.
This year's lineup
includes: An Evening with
Chris Botti, Tommy James
and the Shondelles, Kool
and the Gang, ABBA Mania,
and A Kenny Rogers Christ-
mas and many more.
Come and spend the day
or the weekend. Fort Pierce
has something for everyone.

Fallen Marine
honored with
adoptions
Marine Corp. Ian Zook of
Port St. Lucie died in Iraq
on Oct. 12, 2004. In his
memory, his parents, Mark
and Karen Zook, who now
live in Palm City, adopted
two older Russian children,
using money from Ian's
death benefits.
Five years later, on Oct.
12, 2009, family and friends
will gather to honor the fall-
en hero and to help raise
funds for the Zooks to
adopt two additional Russ-
ian orphans.
The event, "Love Lives
On," will take place at New
Hope Fellowship Church,
located at 3900 S.W. Citrus
Blvd., in Palm City at 6 p.m.
There will be silent and live
auctions with items includ-
ing a '97 Mustang and a trip
to Asheville, N.C., and
entertainment by contem-
porary Christian artists
Steve Camp.
Patty Brent, a friend of
the family, said that the
event is more then a
fundraiser.
"It's a tribute to Ian," she
said. "We want to keep alive
his memory and his sacri-
fice."

'Green' music school
has open house
The Stuart School of
Music, located at 1608 S.
Kanner Highway, will host
an open house on Oct. 3
from 2-8 p.m. to introduce
its newly renovated school.
The facility is the first
"green" musical school in
Florida.
Cindy Kessler of the Stu-
art School of Music said the
renovated facility combines
a love of music and the
environment. The school
has installed a 5K photo-
voltaic system to generate
electrical power on sunny
days.
An energy-efficient metal
roof is approved for wind
speeds of 140 mph. In addi-
tion, better insulation,
energy-efficient windows,
an upgraded air condition-
ing system, low-flow
plumbing fixtures and spe-
cial lighting will reduce the
school's energy footprint.
The school offers instruc-
tion in voice, piano and a

STUART Nestor Tor-
res is as passionate about
education as he is about
music.
The Grammy-winning
jazz flutist will spend a
week in Martin County
schools as an artist-in-
residence before his con-
cert on Oct. 9, in which
students from the week
will perform.
The project is part of
the Nestor Torres Initia-
tive and is a joint venture
of the Lyric Theatre and
the Educational Founda-
tion of Martin County,
with a grant from the
William and Helen
Thomas Charitable Trust.
Mr. Torres, John Loess-
er, executive director of
the Lyric Theatre and Lisa
Rhodes, executive direc-
tor of the Educational
Foundation, sat down
recently at the Lyric to
discuss the project,
which involves visits
from Mr. Torres to
Warfield and Palm City
elementary schools,
Challenger School, Hid-
den Oaks Middle School,
Jensen Beach High
School and The Pine
School.
"In partnership with
the Lyric, we were in
touch with the schools,"
Ms. Rose said. "They were
chosen by a combination
of what Mr. Torres want-
ed to accomplish and
what schools were ready
to take on a big project at
the beginning of their
year. It's a cross-section
of the district and we
hope the first of many
such projects to come."
Mr. Torres and his per-
cussionist, Jose Gregorio
Hernandez, will work
with students and teach-
ers. The criteria for selec-
tions were left to the indi-
vidual schools. A
videographer will record
the sessions.
"We'll be working
hands-on," Mr. Torres
said. "We want it to be
instructional, inspiring
and motivational, with
performances weaved
in."
The Lyric's director is
excited about the pro-
gram.
"Our plan is to start
doing these residencies
on a regular basis, to
reach as many people as
we can," he said. "When
Nestor was here last year,
I thought he'd be a per-
fect artist, very person-
able, with broad appeal
to kids. He jumped at the
idea."
For his part, Mr. Torres
is pleased that the plan is
coming to fruition.
"I'm thrilled that the
Lyric and Educational
Foundation have the
vision to put my qualities
to use," he said. "This is a
musical program within a
music setting, but I don't
address technical issues
about music. The musical
setting is the context
within which I share life
and character. How you

formances will directly

Pacing yourself is the key to

Cancer-June 22-July 22
You wake up most mornings

Can you believe it's
more than a year since
mom passed away?
Thinking about her, I began
browsing through her small,

years ago, so why I don't have
a copy beats me.
Before I get to mom's
recipes, I'd like to give you
more foods you can freeze.

Playing an area links-style course challenging, fun
One of our areas most
forgiving courses is
St. James Golf Club in
Port St. Lucie.
With expansive fairways
and a lack of large trees,
golfers will be enticed to tee
it up and let it rip here. This
links-style course may not
be a true links experience,
but it's about as close as
you'll find on the Treasure
Coast.
Because St. James is a
Florida course, instead of
being surrounded by the
sea, you instead get a sea of
homes. Fortunately, they sit
well back from the course
and, other than blocking
some of the wind, have little
effect on play.
The course has changed
hands a few times since its
grand opening in 2000. The
current owners have shed
the course's reputation from
a few years back and golfers
have taken notice.
The course also has new
maintenance equipment,
an outstanding new super-
intendent and fresh friendly
faces. It's easy to see why the
course hosts four weekly
men's leagues.
The course was designed
by Warren Henderson and
rewards shot value and a
strong mental approach.
With a couple of drivable
par-4s and an easily reach-
able-in-two par-5, golfers
are forced to think about
how they will play the hole.
The areas around the greens
are built and maintained to
give players a choice of
several shots. You can flop

what you need to know before you
or lob a shot in, bounce a
shot in, or, as one of my
playing partners did a few
times, you can roll the ball
50 yards or more to the
green, if you prefer.
The par 72 course features
four sets of tees measuring
from 4,811 to 6,838 yards.
Golfers of any ability are
able to find a set of tees to
challenge his or her game.
There are few forced
carries from the more
forward tees, and I have
found St. James to be a great
place for the entire family to
play.
The course starts with a
tame par-5.When you look
out at the large fairway, your
first-tee jitters should melt
away. This hole is a great
start for those who forgot to

arrive early enough to warm
up at the range.
The tee shot from the
back tee at No. 8 is quite
intimidating. From here,
you realize you must hit
your drive straight and quite
long to have any shot into
the green on this 430-yard
test. It's the beginning of a
run of truly solid holes.
The ninth hole is the
longest par-3 on the course,
measuring nearly 200 yards
from the back. The longest
par-4 on the course follows.
At 468 yards from the
Gold
back and just over 400 from
the forward tees, the 10th
tests every long club in your
bag.
What follows may be the
shortest par-5 in the county.
Measuring a short 499 yards
from the tips the 11th
invites you to attack. After
playing eight, nine and 10,
you may need an eagle or
birdie here to get things
going again.
The closing holes are very
good. The par-5 16th
requires two solid shots
before you can hit your
wedge to the green. The par-
3 17th can play anywhere
from 140 yards to nearly 200
depending on the tee and
hole location. It also plays
into the prevailing wind.
On 18,1 I would suggest
staying to the left side of the
fairway. On the right side,
two huge bunkers loom.
They are deep and unforgiv-
ing. One can easily ruin a
great round by finding one
of them.
