0 HOW WEIRD
IS THAT?!
4 SEAN MCCARTHY
Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to be
true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because it's
online doesn't mean it's true!
From www.enquirer.com:
Cincinnati man arrested 146
times since 1998
Authorities said Bennie
Crabtree is the most-arrested
man in the county. Records
show he has been arrested
146 times since 1998, when
Hamilton County's record-
keeping system was updat-
ed.
Veteran police officers said
he was arrested many more
times in the decades before
that.
Crabtree's record includes:
criminal trespassing,
disorderly conduct and theft.
Police say he steals food and
intrudes in places such as the
University of Cincinnati,
hospitals and businesses.
He's never done anything
serious enough to be sent to
prison. Because of jail
overcrowding, he's now often
released hours after arrest.
Police say the 61-year-old
man has lived mostly on the
streets and has some mental
problems. A social worker
says Crabtree is lonely.
From sfgate.com: Pizza
shop worker, 72, foils
robbers with beer can
Police said a 72-year-old
pizza shop employee foiled a
shotgun-point robbery, by
throwing a can of beer at the
perpetrators.
Lancaster Police Lt. Todd
Umstead said two men with
bandanas over their faces
attempted to rob Six Packs
onVine at closing time. One
of the men pointed a
shotgun at the employee,
who was stocking a cooler.
Umstead said the man
threw a 12-ounce can of beer
at the robber and both
assailants fled the store.

Passionate crowd urges congressman

MARTIN COUNTY- The chants of
"Don't back down!" when Republican
Congressman Thomas Rooney, R-

More than half were turned away,
as hundreds crammed into the
packed meeting room. But those who
remained made impassioned argu-
ments against what they described as
President Barack Obama's plan for
"socialized medicine," which they
said would rob citizens of options for
obtaining healthcare and provide free

Those portrayals, which

what is wrong with politics.
"It's the same old politics

MARTIN COUNTY The
Florida Comprehensive
Assessment Test won't be
the sole factor in high
school grades in the 2009-10
school year.
The mere mention of the
FCAT in a school classroom
can often bring looks of
anxiety or worry, but that
may start to change when
the new school grading sys-
tem starts to count other
scholarly activities toward
the overall score.
FCAT will contribute 50
percent, or up to 800 points
of a school's grade, said Terri
D'Albora, Martin County
School District executive
director for instructional
services.
The remaining 800 points
will be scored based on
overall graduation rates,
graduation rates of at-risk
students, scores on post-
secondary readiness tests
such as the ACT, SAT and
CPT, a college placement
test and advanced class
work such as dual-enrolling
at a local college, taking
technical classes that offer
industry certification on
completion and advanced
placement or international
baccalaureate courses.
"Martin County is in a
very good place for this new
system, because we already
offer a lot of the higher-level
courses, so this will just be
an enhancement to our
grades," said, Ms. D'Albora.
The change is a result of a
Senate bill, which made
changes to the current Sun-
shine State Standards for
schools.

"My dad saw that and he
had tears in his eyes," Mr.
Bobb said. "He was so proud
to see his son's name on the
Jumbotron for everyone to

honor."
Martin County athletic

2011.

"We are reviewing all of

D'Albora.
"We're monitoring and
strengthening our AP and IB
programs and want to give
our students every opportu-

she said.
According to the Florida
Department of Education
Web site, the Florida School
Recognition Program
rewards schools financially
for keeping their grades
high. For each A grade, or
letter improvement, the
school can earn $75 per stu-

The financial reward for
maintaining or improving
the grade by one letter will

By testing students more

D'Albora said.
"This also opens the

counties.
His comment led to rous-
ing applause and one of sev-
eral standing ovations during
the evening.
The audience's support for
the Republican representa-
tive was the opposite of the
reception many of his
Democratic colleagues
received at similar forums
across the nation.
A standoff between Rep.
Barney Frank, D-Mass., and
a protestor who compared
President Obama to Adolf
Hitler, for instance, drew
national headlines and made
the rounds on late-night
comedy shows.
This month's meeting in
Stuart attracted only a small
group of protesters, who
were vastly outnumbered
and who largely stood peace-
fully in the meeting room.
Meanwhile, proponents of
the healthcare reform bills
say the changes will help
provide medical care for 46
million Americans who have
no insurance and another
25 million who are underin-
sured as employers
increasingly cut or withdraw
healthcare benefits.
Supporters say the presi-
dent's proposal would create
a government-sponsored
health insurance plan for all
Americans, regardless of pre-
existing conditions, and
encourage preventative care
to thwart major diseases.
The Congressional Budget
Office, a nonpartisan group,
said the plan would save tax-
payers about $219 billion,
without resulting in hun-
dreds of billions in health-
care allocations to Medicare,
as critics have argued.

At this point, Mr. Rooney
isn't campaigning and
remains focused on serving
his constituents, said Jeffrey
Ostermayer, a spokesman.
He's not making any com-
ments on National Republi-
can Congressional Commit-
tee e-mails regarding Mr.
Craft, Mr. Ostermayer said.
"The 2010 election is the
furthest thing from his
mind," he said.
Andy Sere, regional press
secretary for the committee,
said he believes Congress-
man Rooney has done a
good job and is in fine shape
for re-election.
At the same time, he said,
Mr. Craft has a record and it
is his job to point out "what
the real record is" for the
county commissioner.
Mr. Craft, 36, a native of
Fort Pierce, said he got into
the election because many
people in the community
want an independent voice.
He said his main concerns
include agriculture, helping
veterans and dealing with
unemployment.
Mr. Craft said he's worked
to protect the environment
and create coalitions to
bring new jobs to the area.
But instead of focusing on
that, he said, Republicans
are spreading "half truths,
lies and innuendos."
His campaign notes news-
paper coverage showing
people are paying less in
county taxes than before he
took office.
While Mr. Sere notes that
St. Lucie County has one of
the highest unemployment
rates in the state, Mr. Craft's
campaign said the econom-
ic slump is of national pro-
portions. They contend the
unemployment rate is rising
at rate lower than the state
as a whole.
Mr. Craft said he's worked
with others, regardless of
party affiliation, to diversify
St. Lucie County's economy.
He said he believes people
want the more middle-of-
the road position that he is
offering.
Congressman Rooney's
position on health reform is
extreme, he added.
Mr. Ostermayer said Con-
gressman Rooney favors
health reform, but not the
plans promoted by Democ-
rats.
Mr. Craft said he's ready
for an honest debate, but if
extreme rhetoric dominates,
"the voters lose."

APATITE
Yes, there is a gemstone
named Apatite. It is a calci-
um phosphate mineral with a
hardness of 5. It is found in
Brazil, Burma and
Madagascar. There are also
deposits in India and Sir
Lanka. Its name is derived
from a Greek word meaning
'to deceive.' This is because
of the variety of colors and
formations in which this
stone occurs, making it easy
to mistake it for other miner-
als. It can be yellow, blue,
green, brown and gray or
colorless. The largest known
Apatite deposit is in Kirovsk,
Russia. The most popular
color is the light blue-green
and it pairs up beautifully
with the blue-green opals.
This gemstone is sensitive to
acids and has a fluores-
cence in a black light. This
remarkable gemstone also
occurs in a cat's-eye. The
best cutting style for this
gemstone is an oval, but
rounds work well too.
Rectangles are rare. These
beautiful gems are quite soft
and can be scratched with a
knife so every day wear is
not advised. They would be
better suite for a pendant or
earrings. This gem can be
confused with beryl or tour-
maline and synthetic apatite
is known. If you think you
have an apatite or would like
to see them we have jewelry
set with this special gem.
Take a moment to stop by

gem for yourself.

The replacement, currently
under construction, is a

It will also feature an expand-

Slow down across the bridge
I know I am peculiar, but for some reason, I choose to
drive my car at the posted speed limit.
In my case, this means an often-traveled jaunt on A1A
and crossing the bridge.
For some reason, the bridge crossing inspires about 90
percent of drivers to suddenly step on the gas and overtake
me, going at least 55 or 60 mph.
Now, I can understand this if a man's wife is having a
baby, but I doubt this is the case for so many. What's the
hurry ?
Get the facts straight
I am appalled at the misinformation that is out there re:
health care.
I am a social worker and am very familiar with the servic-
es that are provided under our present system, especially to
our children. The system needs to be fixed and I wish con-
servatives would stop burying their heads in the sand. If we
don't invest in preventive health care, we will pay much
more later.
It costs more to visit an emergency room after the fact,
than if someone was able to get a yearly physical, for exam-
ple.
There is not enough room for me to give you examples of
how Medicaid has failed our children in this county, or how
parents have a really difficult time obtaining Kid Care in
Florida because of the incompetence of some of the people
who work in that office.
I'll give you one example. Last year, there was no ortho-
pedic surgeon in this county or within 70 miles of here
north or south who would accept Medicaid from a child
who had broken his arm. By the time we found someone
willing to do it pro bono, his arm had already begun to set
and it cost a lot more to fix it than if it had been treated ini-
tially.
So don't fool yourselves, people, and think that Medicaid
is a cure for the poor or the state-run system is available to
all.
I'd like to see what would happen if one of these people's
children had an issue and they could not get treated. Would
they still be screaming at the town hall meetings?
I am advising all people who are rational and who care
about other human beings to take the time to read and
learn what is really in the health bill. Don't assume that
what others are saying is correct. We can all disagree, but we
don't have to scream and call names. We all need to educate
ourselves.
Think about this
There is a very natural reaction for folks to be offended,
even angered, when they discover top executives of firms
that have received bailout money, still are given huge
salaries and bonuses, but for bureaucrats to get into the act
is indeed a slippery slope.
If that type of intrusion is seen as a legitimate function of
government, what is there to limit the powers of Washing-
ton to dictate the wages and salaries, and even the benefits
and working conditions, of each and every worker in the
entire nation?
Healthcare system costs
Anyone who believes our country can install a govern-
ment-run health care system without incurring dizzying
debt has not been listening.
While the citizens of this nation enjoy the best health care
on the globe, it is expensive. To experiment with something
mandated by Washington bureaucrats makes very little
sense.
This and that
Calling an illegal immigrant an undocumented alien is
like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist.
O'Rourke said:
P. J. O'Rourke said it. "If you think health care is expensive
now, wait until you see what is costs when it's free!"

Expert talks about nutrition, part 2
Hank Frier holds a
doctorate in
nutritional bio-
chemistry from the
University of Connecticut
and is an adjunct professor
at Indian River State
College, teaching nutrition
and diet therapy.
Last week, I wrote about
some of his views on
nutrition. This week, I'll
share more of his views.
Saturated and trans fats
have been in the news a
great deal. Saturated fat is
chiefly found in foods from
animals, including dairy
products, and from plants
such as coconuts and
palms.
Trans fats are formed
during the process of
hydrogenation. Processed
products, such as mar-
garine, shortening, cook-
ing oils and foods made
from them are the chief
sources of trans fats in our
diet. Mr. Frier spoke of the
importance of limiting
both.
"I think it's a great idea
to ban trans fats from
foods," he said. "Saturated
fats raise LDL, or bad
cholesterol," he said.
"Trans fats raise bad
cholesterol and lower
HDL, or good cholesterol.
"Back in the 1940s and
1950s, it was decided that
people should reduce
saturated fats and eat more
vegetable oils. Scientists
knew that people liked
butter, so they looked to
replacements. They could
take liquid vegetable oil
and make it solid through
hydrogenation. People
were told not to eat butter,
but to eat margarine."
New scientific informa-
tion has changed that
thinking.
"We're finding out, in the
last 15 years, that it has not
benefited the health of the
nation," he said. "People
are still at risk for heart
disease. Now, everyone
says, 'no trans fats.' The
FDA allows baked goods to
say they have 0 trans fats
even with a gram. There's
no significance if you don't
eat a lot of baked goods,
but if you do eat a lot,
you're picking up a lot of
trans fats.
"People should limit
baked goods intake and
read labels. They should
understand that if they say
0, it may have up to a
gram."
Mr. Frier suggested olive
oil as a spread for bread
and cooking and says
liquid oils, such as canola
oil, are preferable to solid
fats.
He also spoke about the
fine line between foods,
foods that make health
claims and drugs.
"The food industry
would love to make
claims," he said. "Anything
that prevents or mitigates
disease is a drug, accord-
ing to the FDA. If you say
you prevent heart disease,
you are a drug."
Mr. Frier also spoke
about healthy eating for
weight loss.
"If you expand the
difference between protein
and carbs and raise the
amount of protein and
lower the carbs, there'll be
greater weight loss," he
said. "There's also an
improvement in body
composition and people
lose more body fat."
He suggested staying
away from refined carbs,
found in processed foods,
because they are believed
to stimulate insulin
production and add to
weight gain.
"The diet that seems to
work best is lean protein,
which leaves you less
hungry, and complex
carbs, including brown
rice, cauliflower, broccoli,
leafy vegetables, carrots
and bok choy," he said.
He also recommended a
multivitamin with miner-
als with such a diet.
"It doesn't matter if you
eat three meals a day or
graze," he said. "Do
whatever works for you,
what you can live with.
That's true for any diet."

Free site pulls financial data into one place
personal computers
have always been
good for keeping
track of finances. There are
plenty of programs, such
as Quicken, Microsoft
Money, Quickbooks and
Turbo Tax out there to help
with the task and most
online banking systems do
a pretty good job, too.
With all the different
programs out there, it can
be confusing just deciding
where to start. Then (after
shelling out hard-earned
cash for the right software)
setting up your program
can be a challenging.
There has got to be a
better way and I think I
may have found it.
Fire up your Web brows-
er, head over to
www.Mint.com and take a
look around. This free
service is one of those rare
sites that really delivers
quality content without
the spyware, annoying ads,
viruses and other
"gotchas" that often plague
other free sites. After
spending a week or so
checking it out I have to
admit I'm impressed.
So, what is it? Mint.com
is a personal finance site
that gathers all your
financial information into
one place so you can see
exactly where all of your
money is coming from and
where it's going.
The operative phrase
here is that "it gathers" the
data. It works by itself
immediately after signing
up, and when you are
done, all of your accounts
are summarized and
displayed in one place. No
more logging into multiple
sites to see where you
stand.
Let me run through it
real quick.
Once you connect to
Mint.com and read up a
bit, click the free "get
started here" button. You
will be asked for your e-
mail, ZIP code and a
password to use.
Click the next button
and you will be asked for
your first bank's URL or
Web address. Enter your
bank's online banking
information and repeat the
steps for all of your
accounts.
You can enter your
online banking informa-
tion for your checking,
savings, all of your differ-
ent credit cards, your auto
loan, mortgage, even your
PayPal account.
Once all of your
accounts are added, Mint
will give you a summary of
what the balances are, the
interest rates and (most
importantly) where all of
your money is going from
all accounts at the same
time. There is even a free
iPhone app that works
with Mint, so you can have
all of your information at
your fingertips when you
are out and about.
I know many of you are
reluctant to use online
banking for fear of identity
theft, let alone giving one
Web site all the informa-
tion it needs to access all
of your accounts.
In fact, I'm sure that
right now people are
reading this thinking I
must be crazy to even
suggest it. However, as you
may or may not know, I am
a certified identity theft
risk management special-
ist, and I do know a thing
or two about these mat-
ters.
And (after careful
research and considera-
tion) I can tell you that
Mint.com is secure. The
Web site has an enormous
amount of information
regarding security, but
what it boils down to is
this: when you create your
account you are anony-
mous (all you enter is
email, ZIP code and login
information you don't
even enter your name), the
site uses the same level of
encryption the banks use,
and all of the information
is "read only," so even if a
miscreant got hold of your
login information, they
may be able to see how
much money you spent at
Starbucks this month, but
they can't do things such
as move money around or
even see any of the actual
account information (such
as names, pins or account
numbers).
But why bother? I
actually have known about
Mint for a while now but
put off checking it out
because I didn't really see a
need. I can see everything I
need to see by logging into
each of my accounts and
looking, so why do I need a
site like Mint?
Well, as soon as I set up
my account, I realized I
was looking at a winner.
There is something to be
said for having all of your
information available
summarized in one login
screen and some of Mint's
tools (such as the budget-
ing and analysis stuff) are
really helpful to under-
stand where the hell all the
money goes every month.
Maybe, just maybe
www.Mint.com can help
even me get my financial
act together.

Now that the cash for

My belief about the

about there being some

pertinent to a sale or how a
dealership's cash-flow would
virtually dry up by not
paying dealers promptly. You
will be reading about
dealerships that were
literally put out of business
by this program because they
did not receive the money
from their sales from
NHTSA.
As I write this preface, less
than 10 percent of the $3
billion has reached dealers.
My own dealership is owed
more than $1 million.
Because dealers make far
less than $4,500 or $3,500 on
a sale, every clunker transac-
tion drove them further into
a negative-cash position,
some to the point of bank-
ruptcy, and thousands were
forced to quit the program
to launch at 3 p.m. on Aug. 30
and run until Sept. 6. All pro-
ceeds will benefit the animal
shelter, clinic and other pro-
grams.

early.
Once again, our
Congress and Senate
have proven they are
out of touch with reality or,
perhaps more likely, simply
inclined to pass any legisla-
tion that will get them re-
elected.
The "Cash for Clunkers"
bill passed the House and
the Senate and awaits
President Obama's signa-
ture. It is supposed to help
energy conservation
because it will take higher
gas mileage vehicles off the
road. It's also supposed to
help our floundering
economy because it will
incentivize owners of
"clunkers" to buy new cars.
When the driver of a
clunker, defined to be a
vehicle with relatively poor
gas mileage and worth up to
$4,500, trades it in he gets a
voucher for either $3,500 or
$4,500. Then the dealer
must scrap that vehicle.
Here's why our politicians
are out of touch with reality.
Our country is in the worst
economic condition since
the Great Depression. The
most severely affected are
those at the lower end of the
economic spectrum.
Arguably, even more
important than housing to
this class of people is
transportation (you can
sleep in your car). It's not
possible for many to get to
work without a car. It's not
even possible for many to
look for work without car.
How about taking your
children to school or getting
to a doctor or hospital?
These are the people who
buy "clunkers" because they
don't have the credit to buy
anything more expensive.
Or maybe they can't get any
credit at all and can afford
only cars cheap enough to
afford to buy for cash.
If this legislation works
the way the politicians say
they want it to, it will
remove most clunkers from
the road and drive up the
prices of those few remain-
ing to make them unafford-
able to those who have no
other transportation option.
Of course, a lot of the
economically challenged
are already driving clunkers.
The new law doesn't permit
them to use the $3,500 or
$4,500 voucher to buy a
nicer, more reliable used

An Open Letter to Florida Car Dealers.
Eliminate the "Dealer Fee".
Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "My cu

sales, service,
parts, body shop,
and accounting.
Virtually every car dealer of educa
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a Sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much hig
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.
t
ca
)h4
Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
tomers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new

fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would

car. They may only buy a
much more expensive
new car.
Unfortunately, most
people with bad or no
credit, who are forced to
drive a clunker, won't be
able to get financed on a
new car, even with the
$3,500-$4,500 down
payment.
Logic dictates that no
one would have his
vehicle scrapped for a
$4,500 voucher if was
worth more than $4,500.
But who is to say what a
clunker is really worth?
I can tell you from my
40 plus years in the retail
auto business that you
can show a used car to
five different used car
managers and get five
different opinions as to
what it's worth.
I advise consumers to
shop their trade-in to at
least three different car
dealers before they
accept a trade-in
allowance from the
dealer they buy from.
Typically you will see a
$2,000 to $5,000 differ-
ence between the 3
professional opinions. I
see nothing in the
legislation to control this
variable. I can guarantee
there will be thousands
of vehicles scrapped that
are worth more than the
voucher amount. How
will you feel knowing
that you paid $4,500 of
your tax dollars to scrap
a car that had a market
value of $6,000?
To the extent that
lower gas mileage
vehicles are taken off the
roads, this is good. But
energy conservation is
not our country's top
priority right now. We
need to think about
cutting our 10 percent
plus unemployment in
half. Scrapping the only
cars that many of our
unemployed can afford
to buy and driving up the
prices of those that
remain is not the right
way to go about this.
Car dealers love this
because of the general
lack of understanding of
this new law will likely
drive potential buyers
into their showrooms.
You can argue that this is
good, because it will
stimulate new car
buying. But is it good to
stimulate the economy
through deception?
I'm already getting
solicitations from
marketing companies
with all sorts of cute
ideas about how to
exploit this legislation.
You can expect to see an
advertising media blitz
on "Cash for Clunkers."
I will end this column
on a positive note. One
Congressman who voted
against this legislation is
Tom Rooney from
District 16, my district.
There are always a few
who vote their con-
science and not what will
get them reelected.
Unless we recognize and
vote for guys such as
Tom Rooney, this
endangered species will
vanish.

The nation's economy over
the past few years has shown
just how unstable the real
estate industry can be.
From 2002-05, the real
estate industry, particularly
in South Florida, went
through one of the biggest
booms in American history.
Times were good and
property owners were
making money in the real
estate market. Property
owners were not overly
concerned when they
received their annual
property assessment from
the county property apprais-
er's office because the annual
assessment was typically
lower than what the owner
could sell it for.
Then, the hurricanes of
Katrina and Wilma hit in late
2005, and the nation's
economy and the real estate
market, especially in South
Florida, began to drop off.
Today, the nation's
economy has continued its
rapid decline into one of the
worst recessions in 20 years.
The market value of real
property is not what it was
worth just a few years ago.
It is time to take notice and
a hard look at your county
property appraiser's assess-
ment of your property. There
is a real chance that they
have valued your property
too high. Even if the
assessed value is less than it
was last year, it may not have
gone down enough.
Each August, property
owners receive an assess-
ment notice from the county
property appraiser's office,
which sets forth the amount
of property tax due based on
the value of real property.
The property taxes are
imposed against the land
and all improvements to the
land to arrive at a "just
value," which is the fair and
reasonable value of the
property based on inde-
pendent valuation methods.
To arrive at "just value" the
county property appraisers

property such as location,

From Livescience.com:
Giant plant eats rodents
A giant plant that can
gobble up bugs and rodents
has been discovered in
Southeast Asia.
The carnivorous plant was
found by researchers atop
Mount Victoria, a remote
mountain in Palawan,
Philippines.
The research team, led by
Stewart McPherson of Red
Fern Natural History
Productions, learned of the
plant in 2000 after a group of
Christian missionaries
stumbled on it while trekking
up a remote mountain and
reported it to a local newspa-
per.
The pitcher plant is the
world's second largest and
can grow to more than 4- feet
tall, with a pitcher-shaped
structure filled with liquid.
The plant secretes nectar
around the pitcher's mouth
to lure rats, insects and other
prey into its trap. Once an
animal has fallen in,
enzymes and acids in the
fluid break down the carcass
of the drowned victim.

"Putpockets" give a little
extra cash
Visitors to London always
have to be on the lookout for
pickpockets, but now there's
another, more positive
phenomenon on the loose:
putpockets.
Aware that people are
suffering in the economic
crisis, 20 former pickpockets
have turned over a new leaf
and are now trawling
London's tourist sites,
slipping money back into
unsuspecting pockets.
Anything from 5 pounds
($8) to 20 pound notes are
being surreptitiously
deposited in unguarded
pockets or open handbags in
Trafalgar Square, Covent

Artist-in-residence
program to debut
The Lyric Theatre and the
Educational Foundation of
Martin County have part-
nered to establish an artist
residence program that will
provide educational oppor-
tunities for students and
teachers in Martin County.
The program will debut
Oct. 5 with "The Nestor Tor-
res Initiative" a week-long
residency with Grammy-
winning Latin jazz artists
Nestor Torres.
Students and teachers
fromWarfield and Palm City
elementary schools, Chal-
lenger School, Hidden Oaks
Middle, Jensen Beach High
School and the Pine School
are scheduled to participate
in the project.
The week will culminate
with a concert on Oct. 9 at
the Lyric, featuring selected
students who have worked
with Mr. Torres throughout
the week. John Loesser,
executive director of the
Lyric spoke about the pro-
gram.
"We are excited to be
partnering with the Educa-
tional Foundation or Martin
County, working to bring
major artists like Nestor
Torres directly into the
schools to work with both
music educators and stu-
dents," he said. "It is our
goal to motivate and edu-
cate as many as our chil-
dren as we can by having
them work directly with the
artists."

JENSEN BEACH Mark
Johnson's life has always
centered on the water.
He worked in southwest
Florida as a fishing guide,
occasionally mounting the
catch or making replicas of
it. He noticed people often
enjoyed the finished prod-
uct more than they enjoyed
fishing.
A boat builder by trade,
Mr. Johnson came to the
Treasure Coast eight years
ago because of a job oppor-
tunity in the field. His
career as a professional
artist began at about the
same time, although he had
painted most of his life.
Known for his paintings
of marine life and his land-
scapes of Florida, the Flori-
da native spoke recently
about his work.
For his scenes of marine
life, Mr. Johnson takes
inspiration from snorkeling
and viewing the ocean from
below. He spends a lot of
time on and beneath the
water.
"It's a whole different
world underwater," he said.
"I remember vividly the col-
ors, the turquoises and
deep blues. The sunlight
comes through the water
and reflects, even on the
bottom."
The artist often works
with gesso on canvas or
Masonite. The gesso, a

Mr. Johnson paints from
memory and his imagina-

paint a landscape, he some-
times does sketches first.
He recently completed a
large mural for White's

and accepts commissions
for both marine scenes and
landscapes.
"I'll accept a commission
and the customer gives me
an idea," Mr. Johnson said.
"I'll surprise them and put a
lot more in it. People love
the bright colors and they
love marine life in this
area."
Jim Kasper, who owns
Zafka Gallery in Jensen

work.
"Mark is one of my pre-

Focus on a healthy lifestyle
that includes one or two fun
things every day. Your play-
ful nature will carry you
safely through any of life's
challenges. This is the spirit
of Aries at its best. Take care
of the most important
things first. What makes you
happy? Now the rest of the
earthly stuff falls into place.
Yeah, Aries!

Resist the temptation to
take on more than you can

worry begins, slow down,

much discord are you will-

time to leave your comfort

sharpen your life's tools.
Now add new ones that will

The Martin County
Library System will present
the Southern Arts Federa-
tion's third annual Short Cir-
cuit Traveling Film Festival at
the Blake Library 2351 S.E.
Monterey Road, Stuart on
Sept. 12.
Short Circuit is the only
program that spotlights short
films created by filmmakers
living and working in the
southeast. This year, the festi-
val features work by filmmak-
ers from Florida, Georgia and
Louisiana.
Twelve short films, ranging
from fictions and animation
to experimental and docu-
mentary, were selected by a
panel of media arts profes-
sionals. The selections will be
screened in a marathon
showing beginning at 10 a.m.
and repeating at 1:30 p.m.
The one-day festival on
Sept 12 kicks off a series of 12
films to be shown Sept 20-
April 11 at the Blake Library.
Among the films to be
screened on Sept. 12 are the
documentary "Raised on
Rice and Gravy," about what
food means to a Louisianans
town; the experimental film
"Pollenating," shot with a
award
served the association by
hosting, sponsoring and
assisting with the conference.

pose. You have a deep sense
of appreciation for life. This
attracts others who have
your values. It is a simple
plan. It is ideal. Your high
standards demand that you
live this way. Now you con-
tinue on the way to great joy
and happiness.
Libra-Sept. 23-Oct.22
Measure the quality and joy
in your own life by the hap-
piness you feel and express
in your own heart. You were
born to be of service to oth-
ers. Whenever you feel out
of sorts, it is because you
have let your own energy get
unbalanced. Get back to it
and continue to move for-
ward to great rewards. You
can and will do it.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
You have an emotional edge
this week. The planets are in
positive alignment for you.
This is like a booster rocket
giving you extra thrust to
send your dreams into orbit
when you need the push.
Now is a good time to take
action on your greatest
dream. It you do, great, posi-
tive results are bound to
happen.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
You have a guardian angel
blessing and protecting you.
Why? It is because of your
large heart and spirit
embracing and surrounding
you with light. Your large
heart knows no bounds. The
universe loves you. Are you
ready to receive back all you
give to others? It is so excit-
ing to see a bumper crop
coming your way.

of getting sidetracked in the

Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Your great ideas continue to

your heart than your head.
You have an uncanny ability
to stay away from the

OW'e English Comedy
by John Chapman and Dave Freeman
A wickedly amusing play by two English Master
craftsmen of Comedy. A play of confusing mayhem
when a divorcee living in an elegant flat in England
solves her financial woes by discreetly (or maybe not
so discreetly) entertaining two married gentleman
callers on different days of the week. Splendid farcical
situations and a climax that is sheer comic wizardry.

Gift to benefit
children's services
For Hometown News
News@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY -
David Smythe, who turned
82 on Aug. 10, made a cash
gift of $2 million to Martin
Memorial Hospital, bene-
fiting children's services.
In gratitude for his gen-
erosity, the portion of Mar-
tin Memorial Medical Cen-
ter that houses the
maternal-child depart-
ment will be named in his
honor.
It is the second large gift
from Mr. Smythe, who
made a $500,000 gift to the
hospital in June 2008 after
being impressed with the
care he received at the
health system's wound
medicine center.
In November 2008, the
David L. Smythe Wound
Center officially opened its
doors, after moving from
its previous location to a
new office at 314 Hospital
Ave. in Stuart.
"Getting a gift is not as
rewarding as giving a gift.
That's why I wanted to do
this on my birthday,
because you receive a
tremendous benefit from
the act of giving," said Mr.
Smythe.
"I wanted to be able to
help children and their
families and this is one
way I can accomplish
that," he said.
Funds will be used to
support Martin Memorial's
maternal-child, pediatric
rehabilitation and pedi-
atric programs in Martin
and St. Lucie counties.
In addition, an endow-
ment established by the
gift will also provide annu-
al funding for those pro-
grams, as well as other
programs within the
health system.
Mr. Smythe, who splits
his time between Stuart
and Summit, N.J., has a
long history of community
involvement, thanks in
part to his business suc-
cess.
In 1959 he purchased an
American Motor Corp.
franchise in Summit and a
few years later, opened
Smythe Volvo there.

Agency provides grocenes to seniors
For Hometown News MARTIN COUNTY In
News@hometownnewsol.com addition to daily food
through Meals on Wheels and
senior dining centers, the Council on Aging of Martin
County is now providing monthly groceries for seniors in
need.
Since February, the Council on Aging has underwritten
bulk food distribution for 100 to 125 hungry seniors the
last Saturday of every month.
"During this recession, we are seeing seniors really
struggle who had once earned middle-income wages,"
said Bonnie Ares Royster, the director of development.
"These folks are able to shop and cook for themselves.
They just can't afford to buy all of the food that they

The Council on Aging partners with a national charity,
a local church, a Tequesta family foundation and indi-
vidual donors to provide these monthly groceries.
But, in spite of a successful partnership, there are cur-
rently 25 seniors on a waiting list to receive this monthly
food.
Incorporated in 1974, the Council on Aging of Martin
County is a charity providing services to seniors in need.
Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
The Council is located at 1071 S.E. 10th St., Stuart. For

Hospital gets gift

For Hometown News

TREASURE COAST Wayne Huizenga, the South
Florida entrepreneur and former owner of the Miami
Dolphins and Florida Marlins, recently provided a $1 mil-
lion gift to the Martin Memorial Foundation.
In appreciation for his contribution, Martin Memorial
will name the emergency center lobby in honor of Wayne
and Marti Huizenga.
"As residents of the Treasure Coast, Wayne and Marti
Huizenga recognize the importance of having access to
high-quality health care close to home," said Mark E.
Robitaille, president and chief executive officer of Martin
Memorial.
"This gift will assist us in providing that care. We are
deeply appreciative of their generosity and for their com-
mitment to health care in this community," he said.
Because funds from the Huizenga gift are unrestricted,
they will be used throughout the health system based on
need. That can include everything from purchasing new
technologies and equipment, to funding continuing edu-
cation for nursing staff.
Funds could also benefit the Martin Memorial Emer-
gency Center at St. Lucie West, an off-site emergency
department in Port St. Lucie. The emergency center will
be open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, but will not
provide inpatient beds. It will be staffed and equipped to
handle many of the same emergencies a hospital would,
though patients with more severe injuries or ailments will
be taken to appropriate facilities.
Martin Memorial Health Systems is a nonprofit, com-
munity-based healthcare organization.
