HOW WEIRD
S IS THAT?!
SEAN MCCARTHY

Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to
be true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because it's
online doesn't mean it's
true!
From www.sfgate.com:
Michigan man jailed for
assault during Monopoly
game. A game of Monopoly
landed a Michigan man in
jail. A local TV station
reported a 54-year-old man
was playing the board
game Saturday night with a
female friend when he
tried to buy Park Place and
Boardwalk from her.
When she refused, Fraser
Police Lt. Dan Kolke told
WWJ-AM he hit her in the
head, breaking her glasses.
The man was arrested and
charged with misdemeanor
assault and battery.
From
www.news.aol.com: Driver
on two cell phones crash-
es, cops say. Police say a
western New York tow-
truck driver was texting on
one cell phone while
talking on another when he
slammed into a car and
crashed into a swimming
pool.
Niagara County sheriff's
deputies say 25-year-old
Nicholas Sparks admitted
he was texting and talking
when his flatbed truck hit
the car Wednesday morn-
ing in Lockport, which is
outside Buffalo. The truck
then crashed through a
fence and sideswiped a
house before rolling into an
in-ground pool.
From
www.news.yahoo.com:
Police find train 'suicide'
woman in bed. French
police called off their
search for a woman who
threw herself in front of a
speeding train when they
found she had dragged
herself home and gone to
bed, a court source told
Reuters Wednesday.
The 58-year-old, who
suffered from depression,
jumped in front of the
train, prompting the driver
to alert the police. Discov-
ering only a small blood
stain on the train and the
platform, police called in
helicopters to find the

Companies gain financial

incentives from state

By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY About a
week after it announced plans to
invest $12.9 million in its Martin
County operations, Vought Aircraft
Industries got good news from state
officials.
The Dallas-based manufacturer of
aircraft parts got approval to partici-

pate in Florida's qualified target
industry tax refund program.
The incentive gives businesses a
chance to regain some of the money
they spend to expand their opera-
tions and create local jobs.
Under the program, Vought stands
to gain a tax refund of $3,000 for
each job it creates, with Martin
County covering about 20 percent of
the cost. It can earn up to $300,000.

Son to cycle 500 miles for

cancer awareness in mom's honor

By Samantha Joseph

MARTIN COUNTY- While many
college co-eds drifted through sum-
mer break, a Stuart sophomore
worked on a plan to raise awareness
of a disease that threatened his
mother's life five years ago.
Adam Karol, a 20-year-old student
at Tallahassee Community and Indi-
an River State colleges, spent the last
seven weeks training for a long-dis-
tance bicycle ride.
He plans to return to Tallahassee
on his bike for the new semester, rid-
ing 500 miles in a bid to raise $5,000.
For two hours everyday, and up to
seven on Saturdays, he rides across
the Treasure Coast, sometimes head-
ing repeatedly to Jupiter or Fort

MARTIN COUNTY -
Despite the economic
recession and ironically
because of it a local non-
profit is serving more
clients than ever before.
Stuart-based House of
Hope reported record serv-
ice numbers for the first
half of the year, a reflection
of its ability to survive a
national drop in charitable
giving.
But the figures also point
to a deepening economic

Pierce from his Stuart home.
The training sessions are part of a
routine that has the college student
juggling a full summer course load
and part-time job, while maintain-
ing a 4.0 grade point average.
His bike is a $100 used cycle he
purchased after he got the idea that
he wanted to make a contribution to
the fight against cancer.
"He asked me, 'How do I do a
fundraiser?'" said his mother, Con-
nie Karol, a breast cancer survivor,
who volunteers with Pink Tie
Friends, a nonprofit that helps fund
care for uninsured cancer patients.
"And next thing I know, I saw him
training."
Finding the motivation was easy.
After watching his mother's struggle
with the disease and her subsequent

recession, observers say.
Earlier this year, the
group was among several
Martin County nonprofits
requesting urgent assis-
tance to help meet escalat-
ing demand.
But despite the economic
downturn, House of Hope
reported it was able to
assist a record number of
clients in the first six
months of 2009.
By June 30, its emergency
financial assistance pro-
gram, for instance, had
helped 311 families, provid-
ing them with more than

$49,450 for rent, mortgages,
utilities, medical costs and
other expenses.
The activity in that peri-
od alone comes close to the
levels reported for the
entire year 2008, when the
group gave emergency
financial assistance to 379
families through its opera-
tions in Jensen Beach,
Hobe Sound, Indiantown
and Stuart.
One beneficiary, who
requested to be identified
as Julie, said the agency

from going homeless.

efforts to help other patients, Mr.
Karol said he wanted to show his
support.
"It was one of those things that
happen. My mom was an active
member in Pink Tie Friends, and so I
figured 'why not try to raise aware-
ness, raise some money and help
some people as well?'" he said.
The tricky part was figuring out
the logistics.
Until he got the idea, Mr. Karol
didn't own a bike, much less under-
taken a long-distance trip.
But in a little more than a month,
he made the transition from practic-
ing on his father's bike to getting his
own set of wheels.
"I just bought the cheapest bike I

group responded by hand-
ing out 58.2 tons of food,
the equivalent of about

tive director Patrick Slat-

The debate about

Instead of being able to
approve contracts of up to
$25,000 without a school
board review, district offi-
cials now can only make
deals worth up to $10,000.
Board members voted on
July 21 to limit staff's buying
power, requiring them to get
prior approval for purchases
costing more than $10,000.
But the measure that was
meant to cut costs in a diffi-
cult budget year could
mean weekly consultations
with the board, as staff seek
approval for individual proj-
ects.
"Going forward, we'll like-
ly have more meetings so
that the board can approve
at the new threshold
amount," said Nancy Kline,
superintendent of the Mar-
tin County School District.
"The key is, I want to make
sure of the smooth opera-
tion of the district, and that
there is no impact to our
students as a result of the
new threshold amount."
Since the new policy took
effect last month, staff has

Rule
From page Al
accumulated a list of pur-
chases including
instructional materials -
that they need to present
to the board for approval.
In the days following the
board's vote, at least one
meeting had already been
set.
To delay the requests
would leave students with-
out the material they need-
ed, employees said
"I believe they will all be
approved, because they
have to go through a
process before they come
before the board," Ms.
Kline said. "The key is, we
don't want to impact or
impede students."
The decision to limit
staff's buying power met
with resistance, before the
school board reached a 3-2
vote.
Among those opposing
the idea was Jeff Carver,
the district's purchasing
director.
In a memo to the board,
dated one day before the
vote, he wrote the move

would lead to "a significant
delay in procurement."
Since Jan. 1, the district
placed 145 orders between
$10,000 and $25,000. Get-
ting approval for each of
these purchases would
have required longer plan-
ning periods, adding more
than three weeks to each
decision, and hurt staff's
ability to obtain routine
items, such as textbooks.
"This revision may
impede our current ability
to react to the day-to-day
needs of the district," he
said.
The alternative, Ms.
Kline and other employees
suggest, is weekly meet-
ings with the board.
"I imagine we'd have to
meet very frequently," she
said.
Meanwhile, staffers say
they're trying to adapt to
the new policy.
"We will follow the
school board rule and
make sure we're meeting
the requirements," said
spokeswoman Cathy
Brennan. "On the district
side, the priority is not to
affect services to stu-
dents."

could for my size, because I
was training three to four
weeks on a bike that was too
small for me," he said.
As for his training routine,
that came compliments of
the Internet and his own
intuition after the novice
rider researched his venture.
"I'm just winging it.
There's no set program for
this," he said. "I'll just keep

going until I hit the mark."
He's worked his way to
covering 125 miles in his
longest training sessions,
and Mr. Karol plans to ride
150 miles per day on each
leg of his trip to Tallahassee.
He's allowed a day for rest
between each leg, and along
the way, he plans to stay
with friends in Orlando and
Gainesville.
His trek is set to begin on
Aug. 15 to allow him to set-
tle in Tallahassee before
classes start nine days later.

His effort has not gone
unnoticed. His employer,
AutoGeek.Net, a vehicle
detailing company, made a
$2,500 donation toward the
cause. In less than a week of
Mr. Karol announcing the
venture, individual contri-
butions had brought in
another $200.
"I was surprised by how
much support and enthusi-
asm people have for it," he
said. "It's turning out to be a
much bigger thing than I
expected, which is pretty

cool."
For her part, his mother is
nervous about her son's
long trip, but says she is
deeply moved by his ges-
ture.
"It touches my heart,
because he is a kind spirit,"
she said. "I'm just proud of
him. He's focusing his ener-
gy in such positive ways. It
would make any mother
proud."

GOLD
What is the difference between
14kt gold and 18kt gold?
Simply, the amount of gold per
1000 units of alloyed metal.
14kt has 583 parts per thou-
sand, which makes it more
durable than 18k, which has
750. Both are durable under
normal wear. Just because you
see in the paper that gold was
$930 an ounce doesn't mean
that a ring that weighs 7 grams
should be priced as 1/3 of an
ounce of gold. This doesn't
include alloying costs to make
the gold in a lower karat than
24k or the workmanship
required to produce beautiful
jewelry or the fact that skilled
workman designed, styled and
finished each piece of jewelry.
All of these add into the price of
jewelry. Add to that the name of
a famous designer and you get
even greater costs. Even some
of the best designs can leave a
mark on some people at differ-
ent times. This is not necessar-
ily an indication that the item is
not gold of is not "good" gold it
is a chemical reaction. The
dark residue left on the skin can
come from bleaches and chlo-
rine from cleaning supplies or
swimming pools and even from
hot tubs or Jacuzzis. This acids
will attack and pit gold in time.
These chemicals can even turn
gold into almost a powder.
Here in Florida we see this
damage often. Gold is impervi-
ous to tarnishing, but often in
older jewelry one can some-
times fine dark areas on a
piece of jewelry. Most of the
time this is due to the alloys in
low karat solders and these can
be removed with polishing. If
you have any questions about
your gold jewelry or just need it
freshened up, swing by our
shop and we will clean and
examine your jewelry for free.
We are always available to talk
about you jewelry items as well.

But the decision did not
stop the chatter in several
national media outlets,
including the Wall Street
Journal and Washington
Post and blogs and
forums as far away as the
United Kingdom.
Debaters argued pas-
sionately on both sides of
the issue, but all seemed
to agree the case, which
played out in Stuart, mir-
rors a broader issue.
"Regardless of the out-
pher come of this case, what is
most disappointing is
ver that the issue of providing
om health care to undocu-
mi- mented immigrants
remains unresolved on a
state and national level,"
said Mark Robitaille, the
hospital's president and
chief executive officer.
"This is not simply an
issue facing Martin
Memorial. It is a critical
dilemma facing health
care providers across
Florida and across the
United States."
The case centered on
Mr. Jimenez, who suffered
-. massive head injury in a
car accident while living
, ,. illegally in the U.S.
He arrived at Martin
.. Memorial in 2000, and
V'. remained there for more
than two years. Hospital
officials say he received
about $1.5 million in
unpaid clinical services
during that time. They say
they returned him to
Guatemala after he

home.
But attorneys for Mr.
Jimenez and his guardian
rebutted that claim, filing
a lawsuit seeking punitive
and other damages
against the hospital.
They argued Martin
Memorial employees dis-
charged their client with-
I out paying adequate
attention to follow-up
care for the severely
handicapped man,
according to court docu-
ments.
They also contended
that the hospital returned
Mr. Jimenez to
Guatemala, a country
without the medical facil-
ities to deliver the care he
needed, without explor-
ing other options on the
patient's behalf.
However, the jury sided
with the hospital in the
case that lasted nearly a
month. It was unclear at
press time whether Mr.
Jimenez's representatives
plan to appeal.
"This has been a chal-
lenging situation for Mar-
tin Memorial for most of
this decade and we have
spent a significant
amount of resources as a
g result, resources that
M could have been used to
provide patient care," said
Mr. Robitaille, calling on
state and federal legisla-
tors to address the issue
of paying for healthcare
for illegal immigrants.
"However, our hope is
that something positive
can come as a result."

Questioning point of article

Are you doing your job? Why in the world would you post
how to forge a check, step-by-step?
I am reading the July 31 edition. The article titled "Mixed
fry is a summertime treat," on page B3. Arlene (Borg) states,
step-by-step, how to take all but a signature off a check.
Why in God's name would this be posted in our paper?
Good, so now all your readers, good and bad, now have the
knowledge of how this horrible practice is done.
Good job!
Arlene Borg, the Grammy Guru responds: The purpose of
the information was to tell people how to prevent this from
happening, not to tell how to forge checks. It was meant as a
safeguard. I have printed this before because it's so impor-
tant. I never thought someone would read it the wrong way.
Editor's note: Arlene Borg writes the Grammy Guru food
column for Hometown News. We checked with the Martin
County Sheriffs Office to verify that the practice of check
hbl,.,,iing." as law enforcement calls it, is very real and that
citizens should avoid leaving outgoing mail that might con-
tain checks in mailboxes for extended periods.

More on food stamp fraud

I agree with the abuse on food stamps rant. I have seen so
many immigrants who have food stamps who should not
have them. The problem is with the food stamp office.
We are having bad times here, and they are giving money
away. Then on top of that, people with food stamps are
driving expensive cars and SUVs. Are they double-checking
these people's Social Security numbers? I thought food
stamps were for Americans who need help until they get on
their feet? Now it seems anyone from anywhere can get
them. I see so many illegal immigrants get it now.
Do all of these people get asked for their Social Security
numbers so they can qualify? Or are they free to anyone?

Fraud is rampant

Food stamp fraud is rampant across the Treasure Coast.
The other day I was behind a guy in the store. He paid for a
six-pack of beer with his EBT card. I only had one item, and
followed him out of the store. He got into a Lexus. I can't
receive food stamps. I live on my Social Security. How do all
of these people come here and get food stamps?

Waste of money?

The city pays a code enforcement officer to ride around
on the weekends to stop people from selling items so they
can better provide for their families and pay city taxes, so
the city can pay the code enforcement officer his salary.
City government at its best.

Everyone should cut back

All counties are faced with a tight budget. But the fire dis-
trict doesn't want to cut back. They should cut back, too.

Open both doors

If one of the doors is locked in a store, and an emergency
occurs in the store, it blocks customers from getting out
quickly. They should both be unlocked.

Wasting money on education?

The teachers union has been spending money advertis-
ing, urging the public to pester the state legislature for more
funding for the public schools.
This runs counter to a report on the status of teaching
history, which indicates that pupil performance is woeful.
Teenagers know nothing about "the longest day." Most
teens cannot identify Dwight Eisenhower as a U.S. presi-
dent and they've never heard of D-Day or the Battle of the
Bulge.
Worst of all, many believe the United States started World
War II. All of this leads one to believe that much of the
money we have already provided to the educational estab-
lishment has been wasted.

Tips for managing complicated grief

Last week I described
what happens when
grief becomes more
complicated and seriously
affects the ability to have a
normal life. This week, I'll
discuss some of the
methods used to help
prevent and treat it.
I have mentioned the
grief counseling provided
by Treasure Coast Hospice,
and counseling is an
effective way to deal with
all the emotions surround-
ing the loss of a loved one.
Whether in a group or
individual setting, or both,
counseling offers a safe
way to express your
emotions and learn
effective coping skills.
Many of the ideas in this
column are from my own
experience and from the
Web site of the Mayo
Clinic,
www. mayoclinic. com.
Preventing complicated
grief from taking hold is the
first step. The Mayo Clinic
recommends the following
measures:
Stick to the treatment
plan. Take medications and
keep scheduled counseling
appointments.
Get enough exercise,

eat balanced meals and
don't self-medicate with
drugs or alcohol.
Reach out to friends
and family and your faith, if
that applies.
Practice stress manage-
ment. I have found yoga
and exercise to be a big
help.
Plan ahead for special
dates of anniversaries.
Don't ignore them. As the
year anniversary of my
husband's death approach-
es, I am trying to think of
things to do that honor his
life.
Learn new skills. If your
loved one took care of
certain things, learn to
master some of them
yourself. Ask for help or
take a class.
There is no standardized
treatment for complicated
grief, because it hasn't been
recognized as a disorder for
very long. There are a
number of treatments

being studied to find out
which ones are most
helpful. Grief is such an
individual matter that a
combination of different
approaches may be
necessary.
Complicated grief
therapy has proven suc-
cessful in many cases. This
therapy takes behavioral
counseling and trauma
therapy to explore grief
reactions. By retelling the
circumstances of the death
and other painful issues
about the loss, the goal is to
make them less distressing.
More traditional therapy
may also be effective in
exploring emotions,
improving coping skills and
reducing feelings of blame
and guilt.
If complicated guilt has
become depression,
medication may be
prescribed for as long as it
is necessary. Anti-depres-
sants known as selective
serotonin reuptake
inhibitors may help reduce
the symptoms of depres-
sion. Then it's possible to
use coping skills to deal
with the grief and move on.
The loss of a loved one is
a terrible time and there is

no short cut through the
grieving process. However,
there are things you can do
to help yourself or a loved
one.
Never be afraid to ask for
help and never consider it a
sign of weakness. Grieving
is hard work and you don't
have to do it alone.

Community Center for
Grief Support of Treasure
Coast Hospice, call (772)

How to know where your data is stored

A sk yourself this
question: Do I know
where all the impor-
tant things are on my
computer?
I don't mean things that
make the computer run, I
mean files that are impor-
tant to you, such as word
processor documents and
things created by you.
Much gets said about the
importance of backing up
your data, but one ques-
tion that comes up fre-
quently is what exactly
should we be focused on
when we do backup our
data and, specifically,
where on the computer is
it located?
There are a lot of
answers to that question
that will vary from user to
user, but I've a noticed a
trend over time as to just
what files are typically
missed most when some-
one has a catastrophic
hardware failure and no
backup.
Typically, people
bemoan the loss of their e-
mail addresses/contacts
list, e-mail messages,
favorites list (bookmarks),
Word and XL documents,

COMPUTE

music (mp3s), digital
pictures and miscella-
neous downloads collected
over time.
Most people who I've
worked with already have
backups of Quicken or MS
Money data because those
programs prompt you to
back up all the time. And
(if they have been diligent
enough to hold onto them)
they have a set of restora-
tion disks that holds the
computers' identity just as
it was the day you took it
out of the box.
Since these disks usually
contain the operating
system (Windows) and all
the software that came
bundled (pre-installed
applications such as Word
or Works) with the
machine, there is no need
to include things such as
the operating system and
program files in your
backup list. You already

have them backed up in the
restoration disks.
Unfortunately, many
people don't go beyond the
system disks and lose all
their data.
Now that we know what
we should be focused on,
where on the computer are
these files it is the next
question that has to be
addressed.
You may have noticed a
folder on the desktop called
documents (or "my docu-
ments"). This is the best
place to start (if you haven't
already) saving all your
documents and it makes
backing up your data a
snap. Just copy the contents
of the documents folder to
a CD or some other backup
media and presto, you've
backed up your data.
Or have you? Is all of your
data indeed in the docu-
ments folder?
If you are like most
people, and haven't messed
around with the default
settings of your computer,
then critical files, such as
your e-mail address book
and e-mail storage folder,
won't be in the documents
folder and often gets left

behind during backup.
What about your
favorites folder? Is there a
copy of it in your docu-
ments folder? And what
about programs that create
their own folder for data,
such as MS Works and the
Palm desktop application?
Does your greeting card
program have its own data
folder?
It's important to know
where your programs store
your creative output,
because once you know
where your data is, it's
pretty easy to include it in
your backup routine.
In fact, some programs
let you change the location
or "path" of the data store,
enabling you to move the
folder to a more practical
location, such as within the
my documents folder.
A few minor adjustments
and all your data automati-
cally gets shunted to one
folder where it can be
grabbed for easy one-step
back ups.

Millennials, gen X,

baby boomers should

invest for growth

Shop financing,

trade-in when

buying a new car

Is there a "generation
gap" today? In some
ways, it's possible.
While many baby
boomers are happy just to
understand the basics of
Facebook, "millennials" are
busy texting and twittering.
And yet, when it comes to
investing, baby boomers
(born between1946-62),
generation X (1963-81) and
millennials (1982-2001)
may have a lot in common.
Specifically, to achieve
their long-term goals, these
groups should structure
their investment portfolios
to provide some growth
potential.
However, due to their age
differences, they may need
to take different approaches
in how they invest for
growth. Let's take a look at
all three groups:
Millennials. One of your
biggest objectives maybe to
save enough money for a
down payment on a house.
For this short-term goal,
you may want an invest-
ment whose value won't
fluctuate too much. At the
same time, don't ignore the
need to save for retirement,
even though it's likely
decades away.
Contribute as much as
you can afford to your
401 (k) or other employer-
sponsored plan, and if you
still have money available,
consider opening an IRA.
And you may want to
fund these accounts with an
appropriate amount of
growth-oriented invest-
ments, such as stocks or
stock-based vehicles. (Keep
in mind, though, that the
value of these investments
will fluctuate over time,
sometimes significantly,

and there's no guarantee
you won't lose any princi-
pal.)
Generation X. Retire-
ment is becoming more of a
reality, so if you have been
underusing your 401 (k) and
IRA, now maybe a good
time to ratchet up your
contributions. And
although you have less time
to make up for market
drops than your millennial
co-workers, you're not out
of time, either, so you still
need to invest for growth
potential. Nonetheless, you
may want to include a
higher percentage of bonds
and other fixed-income
vehicles in your portfolio,
especially if you're an older
gen Xer.
Baby boomers. Retire-
ment is coming at you
pretty quickly. And it's both
a short-term and a long-
term goal, because even
though you may be leaving
your career in just a few
years, you could spend two
or even three decades in
retirement, starting a new
career, going back to school
or pursuing other interests
you haven't had time to
pursue.
So you're faced with a
paradox: On one hand, you
don't want to invest too
heavily in high-growth
vehicles, because these are
the most risky, and a market
downturn could cause the
value of your portfolio to

Editor's note: This
column originally
appeared June 16,2006.

f you have read my
earlier columns, you
know how important it
is to get several competi-
tive prices from different
car dealers on the car you
are buying. Equally
important is to get at least
three prices/bids on your
financing and the true
value of your trade-in.
The absolute worst thing
you can do is to tell the
dealer "all I care about is
keeping my payments
under "$X per month" and
not know what the interest
rate, terms or products are
included in the payments.
Part of the profit a dealer
makes on his cars is called
"F&I income" and averages
from $500 to as much as
$2,000 per car sold. You can
do your homework and
buy your car at avery good
price, but by not shopping
your financing, you can
pay the dealer thousands
in finance profits.
Credit unions are often
the best source of funds for
buying a car. Because they
get special tax breaks from
the government not
available to banks, they
usually have the lowest
finance rates. Even if you
don't belong to a credit
union, there are several

you can join for a nominal
fee. You should also get a
financing quote from the
bank you do business with.
Also, give the dealer you
are buying from an
opportunity to beat the
rates you were quoted.
Sometimes he can.
When you are taking
delivery of your car, you
will be asked to consider
buying products such as
extended warranties,
maintenance plans, road
hazard insurance, GAP
insurance, roadside
assistance, credit life
insurance, etc.
My suggestion is that
you do not make a snap
decision on these products
at the last minute. You
should get complete
information on each
product and determine if it
has value for you. You may
already have coverage for
some insurance products
in policies you already
own. With extended
warranties and mainte-
nance, be sure you
understand what is
covered and what is not
covered and what the
deductibles are.
You should get at least
three bids on the value of
your trade-in. You can get
some pretty good guidance
from Kelly Bluebook
(www.kbb.com) and
Edmunds
(www.edmunds.com).

We need to add
to our team in all
departments...
sales, service,
parts, body shop,
and accounting.

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "Mvy cu
am suggesting a change that
will reward both you and your exCfectat
customers.

Virtually every car dealer of eauca
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a SOphistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much higi
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.

S
ii

Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
towers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
nation are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff" that has come to
er today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.
Sincerely,
Earl Stewart Earl Stewart Toyota

drive your trade-in to show the used
car manager at a dealer who is fran-
chised to sell the make you own.
A Chevrolet dealer will likely pay you
more for a Chevrolet trade-in than a
Ford dealer would. That's because
people generally will shop for a used
Chevy from a Chevrolet dealer.
Get one or two more bids from other
dealers in the same make. If you are
near a CarMax store, you should take
your car there, too. They regularly buy
cars like this for their inventory. The
price you will be quoted is referred to
as the ACV which stands for actual
cash value. This is the wholesale value
of your trade in.

Don't confuse the ACV with the
trade-in allowance the dealer you are
buying from gives you. The trade-in
allowance includes part of the markup
on the vehicle you are purchasing. You
have probably read ads saying,
"Minimum $4,000 allowance on all
trades." It's not hard to offer thousands
more on a trade-in than its ACV (true
wholesale value) when you mark up
the new car several thousand more.
Be sure you explain you want to
compare the ACV of your trade-in. Tell
them you want the markup on the
price of the car you are buying dis-
counted, not added on to the ACV of
your trade.
Remember, however, that if you sell
your trade-in to another party, you lose
the advantage of deducting the trade-
in from the price your sales tax is
calculated on.
At 6 percent, you would pay an
extra $600 in sales tax for a trade-in
with a $10,000 ACV
With competitive bids on the car
you are buying, the interest rate on
? your financing and your trade-in
SACV, you are sure to minimize the
total cost of that new or used car.

New kids film shot in Martin County

By Shelley Koppel
Entertainment writer
STUART For many girls,
Barbie, the Bratz dolls and
Hannah Montana are the
only role models they have.
Filmmaker Brian Carroll
hopes to change that with
his action/adventure tale
"Natalie, Queen of Scots,"
now filming in Stuart and
around the Treasure Coast.
Mr. Carroll spoke recently
about his first feature film
and why he's filming most of
it in Martin County.
"I made a short film ver-
sion of 'Natalie' with a cheap
camera and used my sib-
lings," he said. 'A friend saw
it and said it should be my
first feature and I should cast
my sister, Kelli, in it."
Mr. Carroll, who lived in
Port St. Lucie for 10 years,
and his producer, Serenity
Caldwell, put out a call on
the Internet for funding and
raised $45,000. A local
fundraiser brought in some
more money.
'"A film with good produc-
tion values should cost from
$2-3 million," Mr. Carroll
said. "We are making it for
$250,000 because of the
location. The people in

south Florida are very help-
ful, especially Joe Catram-
bone of the Chamber of
Commerce and Gary and
Misti Guertin. It will look like
a $5 million film because of
the work people have put
in."
The film stars Mr. Carroll's
sister, Kelli, 11, a student at
Palm Pointe School in Tradi-
tion, and other local per-
formers. The director said
the film really tells two sto-
ries.
"One is more Natalie's per-
sonal life," Mr. Carroll said.
"Her parents are divorced,
her mother has remarried
and there's a new baby on
the way. There are a lot of
things she doesn't under-
stand.
"As a security blanket, she
forms a fantasy world, where
she's Natalie, queen of her
kingdom. She builds a sand
castle and she threatens the
ocean not to knock it down.
When it does, she declares
war on the ocean."
Filming, which began July
20 and is expected to last five
weeks, is taking place in Stu-
art and Martin County, with
a few scenes shot elsewhere.
"Stuart feels like a classi-
cal-looking town," Mr. Car-

roll said. "Martin County
opened its doors to us.
They've been invaluable in
the process. Because of the
efforts of Martin County, it
will not be our last film here.
I love this area. It's taken a
long time to realize how spe-
cial this area is to me. We're
moving our studio, Lobster-
back Entertainment to Stu-
art."
After filming and post-
production, the production
team will work to get the film
shown at film festivals. Mr.
Carroll said there has been
some interest in the film,
which has been in the works

Kelli Carroll stars in the
movie, 'Natalie, Queen
of Scots,' an
action/adventure
feature film being
shot in Martin County
and the Treasure
Coast. It is directed by
her brother, Brian
Carroll.

for 18 months.
"I'm so happy we started
shooting," Mr. Carroll said.
"This movie is about kids,
about how kids are often
looked down on in movies.
People think kids will laugh
at anything. Our movie
shines a light on the fact that
kids are very smart and have
a unique way of showing it,
different from adults."

Week of 8-7-2009

Aries-March 21-April 19
When commitments from
others are slow in coming,
summon up courage and ask
why. Your time is valuable,
too. Everyone needs to be
reminded now and then. Be
patient. You are a fire sign
ruled by the instincts. Follow
your heart. Trust your instincts.
These are the great tools. Use
them and victory is assured.

Taurus-April 20-May 20
Now is a good time to address
feelings and emotions you
have been burying. The uni-
verse wants to help and
resolve family issues and chal-
lenges. All that is needed is to
ask and then wait for the
answer to pop in the mind.
This inner power is one of our
greatest blessings. This will
help lift a load you don't have
to carry.

Gemini-May 21 -June 21
Refuse to let worry, doubt or
indecision block your path.
The key is to stay centered.
Consult your thoughts and
feelings but let your deeper
hunches guide your decision
making. Focus every day on
something you love to do just
for fun. A happy soul and a
loving heart are our greatest
blessings, you know.

Cancer-June 22-July 22
You give a lot. It is sometimes
challenging to wonder why
others can't do the same.
Aries energy is similar this
week. Read Aries. One of the
best ways to stay happy is to
stay focused on your desires.
Refuse to let the world or less
sensitive people pull you out
of your center. You are far too
great for that.

Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
You have so many workable
ideas. But you can't make
them all happen without a lit-
tle help from your close
friends. It is essential that you
work from a top priority list.
Take action on number one
then two then three. Then
stop. You've done your work.
Now it is time to play. A
healthy Leo, in balance, is as
great as it gets.

Virgo-Aug. 23-Sept. 22
Perseverance is paying off.
Never give up. Continue to
keep on keeping on. Higher
dimensions of thoughts, feel-
ings and ideas are coming.
Your personal growth may not
always be recognized by fami-

Your fine sense of duty, loyalty
and patience is greatly appre-
ciated. Much truth continues
to unfold. Be prepared for pos-
itive advancement and
change. Your mind is sharp.
When asked to make large
decisions your first impres-
sions always guide and direct
you. Indecision will never hold
you back. All is so well.

Back to basics with links golf

Smokey celebrates 65

I love watching the British
Open championship. To
me, there is something
very romantic about links
golf. The subtle nuances
intrigue me. The effects of
weather and luck combin-
ing to make for a dramatic
round that is unlike any
other you will play.
The problem lies in that
there are few places to play
links golf without pulling
out the passport and
finding flight. Many courses
tout themselves as links-
style courses. Most of them
are simply courses built by
the sea, not true links
courses.
Fortunately, for Floridi-
ans, we have a true links
course right in the middle
of our state. True, it doesn't
sit hard by the sea. Nor has
it been around for hundreds
of years and seen its
fairways and greens
reshaped by the wind, rain
and sheep. The course of
which I speak is the New
Course at Grand Cypress
Golf Club in Lake Buena
Vista.
The New Course was
designed by Jack Nicklaus
and opened for play in
1988. Built in the midst of a
rolling, open meadow, the
New Course is Jack's tribute
to the famed Old Course at
St. Andrews, Scotland.
Here, Jack created a
Scottish links masterpiece
complete with double
greens, stone bridges and
walls, gorse mounds, burns,
and those pesky pot
bunkers, some as deep as 12
feet. It's a creation truly in
the spirit of the Scottish
original.
Very little water comes
into play on the course, but
it maybe found. The
interior of the course offers
few trees, creating huge
fairways and plenty of room

to miss your target and still
have a shot. Of course your
wayward shots may find
one of those deep pot
bunkers, or another fairway,
or even a mound covered in
gorse. I even found myself
with a birdie putt from well
over 100 feet when I hit the
ball onto the wrong side of a
double green.
The New Course has three
sets of tees, and plays to
nearly 6,800 yards from the
tips. The shortest trip
around the course meas-
ures in at just over 5,300
yards.
While the numbers may
sound short with today's
equipment, you mustn't tee
it up thinking you're going
to bring the course to its
knees. A links course's
defense is not in its length.
Without trees and with
some of the bunkers you
can easily find, the course is
quite well defended. Like a
true links course, Mother
Nature decides how difficult
or easy your round will be.
The course plays to a par
of 72, with a wonderful
variety of holes at different
lengths. I was thankful for
the light breeze at my back
on a couple of the longer
par-4s. Of course, there is a
par-4 that tempts you to
drive the green and another
where trying such foolish-
ness will likely introduce
you to the burn.
Three of the four par-5s
tempt you to get home in
two with a hybrid or long
iron. Your decision could be
made easy should you find
a bunker off the tee. Doing

so can turn any hole into a
par-6 or worse.
I quickly learned to take
my medicine and make
certain that I hit my next
shot out of the bunker, even
if it meant going backwards.
The par-3s are wonderful
and challenging, each going
in a different direction
using the wind to affect club
selection and distance.
At the New Course, you
need not be afraid of
spraying the ball a bit. I
actually hit the same
fairway from three different
tees during my round. The
greens are huge with subtle
undulations and are kept at
a respectable speed.
In true Scottish links
fashion, you can choose
many ways to play any shot.
There are times when you
have to bump and run the
ball, and others where you'll
need to hit it high and land
it softly. You'll use every
club and every shot in your
bag here.
When your trek con-
cludes at the 18th tee, you
can picture in your mind's
eye the final and first holes
surrounded by bleachers
filled with fans. You can feel
the history of the game and
all those who have played
on a links course before.
The New Course doesn't
have the history of the old
course, but it has the "feel."
Best of all, it's just a short
drive away from home.

the New Course at Grand
Cypress Golf Club, visit

What a good week to go fishing

Fishing inshore,
offshore and at the
beach was good all
week.
Offshore, a little bit of
southeast wind moved the
dolphin in. I saw one in
the 20-pound class and
heard about a few more.
They were found in the
150-foot zone, hitting
trolled or live baits.
The baits moved out and
north, but were easily
located. Cobia, sailfish
and kingfish kept most
anglers busy, and the
snapper bite continues
from 40-foot out using
sardines.
Bring some extra bait
along, the bonita are
everywhere. I saw a black
fin in the 20-pound class.
It was caught below the

bonita school.
Fishing the river pro-
duced an excellent trout
and red fish bite. But you
have to be out there early.
By 9 a.m. the bite is over.
Lots of good fish have
been found north of Taylor
Creek or from Bear Point
south to the Sail Fish Flats.
In the mix are plenty of
jacks, big ladyfish and
some good-size snapper.
Live shrimp and soft
rubber baits, maybe
avocado, were favored. I'm
not sure what happened to

top water baits this week.
After 9 a.m., fishing was
best in deeper water.
Toward the edge of the
channel the bite was light.
If your bait stops, set the
hook.
Were you lucky enough
to see the feeding frenzy at
the Jensen Causeway? It
makes you wonder how
the snook know the season
is closed.
The snook bite has been
excellent. All of the fish
have been over the slot.
Remember to take the
barbs off the hooks. Just
hold that rod tip high and
you will land that fish.
After you see the fish,
lower the rod tip and the
fish will shake its head and
the hook will release and
the fish can swim away
