HOW WEIRD

Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to
be true. Here's a sampling,
edited for length. And
remember, just because it's

From www.sfgate.com:
Tweet your prayers to God
For centuries, people have
stuffed prayers written on

tweet them, too.
The Western Wall now has
its own address on the social
networking service, Twitter,
allowing believers around
the globe to have their
prayers placed between its
2,000 year-old-stones,
without leaving their
armchairs.

Spanish settlers arrived in
the 1700s, a tribe called the

now called the Indian River.
But by 1760, the tribe no
longer existed as a result of
members being kidnapped

new online course of study
could make commuting to
class a thing of the past for
Martin County students.
Instead of catching the
bus, students in kinder-
garten through grade 12
can log onto the Internet
to attend Martin Virtual
School, a new alternative
to traditional education.
"It's like a regular school,
except it's online,"
explained Cathy Brennan,
public information officer
for the Martin County
School District.
The district is introduc-
ing the program for the
2009-10 school year to
comply with new legisla-
offi~
tion that requires creating
virtual schools to supple-
ment the current system.
The virtual school fol-
lows the traditional cur-
riculum, but offers online,
self-paced tutorials.
Teachers presenting the
coursework have to meet
the same requirements as
others in the district, and
testing requirements for
students mirror those of
traditional schools.
"It's like going to school,
but you never have to walk
into a building," said Tere-
sa D'Albora, the district's
executive director for
instructional services.
The few exceptions
include a requirement that
virtual school attendees go
to a physical school to take
the FCAT and other dis-
trict assessment tests.
Enrollment is underway,
and officials say six stu-
dents have come forward
for the program. Adminis-
trators expect a slow start,
but say they anticipate
spikes in enrollment in
coming years. They
explained the feature to
parents and interested
students at a July 27 meet-
ing.
Virtual school is a free,
full-time program, offered
in partnership with Florida
Virtual School's Connec-
tions Academy and Florida
Virtual School, which pres-
ent the coursework.
It is especially suited for
students whose families
travel often, who are
involved in rigid training
schedules or work best at
their own pace, Ms. D'Alb-
ora said.
To qualify for enroll-
ment, students must meet
several criteria, including
having already attended a
Florida public school or
being the dependent of
military personnel.
"They have to be moti-
vated, self-paced, inde-
pendent and have strong
family support," Ms.
D'Albora said.

PLATINUM
The British Edwardian Period
and the French Belle Epoque,
co-existed between 1890-
1910, and featured light, airy
floral or scroll-based jewelry,
often in "white-on-white'looks,
diamonds on platinum, dia-
monds and pearls on white
gold, as well as large colored
gems surrounded by delicate
swags of diamond-set metals.
The widespread use of plat-
inum in jewelry began at this
time. Platinum is considered
the king of precious metals. A
few early civilizations occa-
sionally used it to make small
ornaments, but large ore
deposits and effective ways of
fashioning platinum weren't
discovered until the 1800's.
Platinum's popularity soared in
the early 1900's, but during
World Was II the US govern-
ment declared it a strategic
metal and removed it from the
jewelry market. That action
was taken because platinum
has many scientific, technolog-
ical, and industrial uses. White
gold was originally developed
to serve as a substitute for
platinum in jewelry. Even after
platinum was again made
available, it remained a rarity in
jewelry for several decades. In
the 1990's platinum's populari-
ty boomed once more. Today 1
out of every 4 brides receives
a platinum engagement ring.
Despite the vogue, most cus-
tomers consider platinum
because of its unique features
and distinctions. Many like
platinum's neutral gray-white
color. Compared to white gold,
which is highly reflective, plat-
inum also has a more subdued
and sophisticated glow.

Tips to protect against
odometer fraud
On the heels of uncov-
ering suspected fraudu-
lent activity at a used-car
dealership in Stuart,
authorities are urging
caution among buyers.
Dealer Marc Plotnick
and his mechanic,
Charles Johns, each face
at least one felony charge
for tampering with the
mileage dial on up to 100
vehicles sold at Plotty's
Discount Motors, 943
Northwest 16th Place,
Stuart, law enforcement
officials said.
Their case is one of
nearly half a million
nationwide, with more
than 450,000 vehicles sold
annually with false
odometer readings,
according to the National
Highway Safety Traffic
Safety Administration.
Use these tips from
Martin County Sheriff's
investigator Ed Kirk-
patrick, a captain in the
criminal investigations
department, to help guide
buying decisions involv-
ing vehicles.
Check vehicle service
records, he recommends.
Compare the mileage list-
ed on oil-change stickers
and maintenance records,
for instance, to the cur-
rent odometer reading.
Ask to see the seller's
odometer statement,
which lists the mileage at
the time the dealership
bought the vehicle. Call
the last owner to verify the
numbers, he said.
Be sure to examine the
tires, as vehicles with
odometer readings of
20,000 miles or less
should have original tires,
Capt. Kirkpatrick noted.

Investigators suspect
the dealer and mechanic
of turning back the
odometers on several
vehicles by at least 30,000
to 40,000 miles.
They seized two years'
worth of records and four
vehicles from the site, and
are combing through piles
of documents to uncover
mileage discrepancies.
Authorities are inviting
feedback from clients of
the dealership, located at
943 Northwest 16th Place.
They believe the sus-
pected fraudulent activity
dates back to when the
business operated from a
previous address, 628 S.W.
Bryant Ave.
Mr. Plotnick and Mr.
Johns were booked at the
Martin County Jail and

at press time.

An Open Letter to Florida Car Dealers -
Eliminate the "Dealer Fee".
Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-

Virtually every car dealer Ofeduca
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a Sophistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer

to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.

Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the

Too many trees
What about the huge amount of landscaping in Vero
Beach? It's unbelievable. There are shrubs and plants and
trees everywhere. Where are they coming from?
If we are supposed to be budgeting, how can the land-
scaping crews afford all these massive items? Why are we
adding so much, when maintenance people have to take
care of them, but we are being hit with higher utility bills?
We are being run down the river. We need answers and we
need them now.
Revamp the city
It's time for a recall of all the city council members. They
are ruining the city.
Help for animal victim
My cat was shot, probably with an air rifle. The vet
showed me an ex-ray, which showed a broken leg. I called
the police, but could not get past the screener. I called ani-
mal control, but they said they weren't concerned because
the animal was cared for. There is a creep who walks
around the neighborhood with a gun. Who is going to help?
Sick of pop music
No one made a big deal when Steve Bruton died of can-
cer. He was one of the best musicians and songwriter in
America.
No one makes a big deal about jam band members or jam
bands for that matter. No one likes pop music. Everyone is
sick of Michael Jackson. Pop music deserves the same fate
as disco music. Does anyone have a steamroller?
Let's take all the pop CDs to the Mets Stadium and kill
pop music the way disco was killed.
Jam bands sell out every venue they play. They get no air-
play on the radio. Don't tell me that jam bands don't rule.
I'm sick of pop music. I'm sick of bands who have musi-
cians who don't play their own instruments. Jam musicians
write their own music. Pop music should meet its fate.
When grief
becomes complicated
The first thing you learn
about the grieving
process is that it is a
process. It doesn't happen at
once and it doesn't happen
in a straight line. You don't
feel better and better every
day. You have good days and
bad ones.
The next thing you learn is
that there is no timetable.
Everyone grieves differently
and there isn't a right and
wrong way to do it or a time
when you should "get over
it."
In point of fact, you will
never get over the loss of a
loved one, but you will begin
to make a life for yourself.
Sometimes, though, a
grieving person may find it
hard to move on.
In my case, stress over a
scan that required a biopsy
and the death of my cat
exacerbated the grief from
my husband's death. I began
to get more depressed and
go into what is called, in the
lingo, complicated grief.
Complicated grief needs
attention and if you or a
loved one is feeling the
symptoms, you need to talk
to a professional. Having
complicated grief is not a
sign of weakness or failure
on your part and asking for
help is the best thing you
can do.

It's time to get serious and work together
at a year and a
half or so it's been.
V Times like we have
experienced are fortunately
just once, or less, in a
generation. The good side
to these trying times is that
those of us who make it
through this will be a lot
smarter and better busi-
ness people than we might
have been going into it. We
have learned from our
mistakes. We will know how
to better plan and prepare
for tough times in the
future. We will appreciate
the good times and not
take them for granted,
knowing that nothing lasts
forever.
So OK.We've been
through the worst of it. All
signs point to a renewed
economy. Some of us have
even prospered through
this. Some have fought
hard to make it through.
Some who didn't make it
can blame themselves. If a
business owner isn't willing
to make tough decisions,
sacrifice and commit to
their business, they
probably shouldn't have
been in business in the first
place. Success is not easy,
though during the boom
years some made it look
easy. Success does not
come without some pain,
suffering and sacrifice.
One of the things I have
seen and discovered over
the past 18 months is that if

we all work together we can
survive and thrive. All of
the communities we cover,
from Martin County north
to Volusia County, (Day-
tona Beach area) are filled
with local businesses doing
business with the locals. We
wrote a column for our
annual gift guide touting
the benefits of shopping
local. Now it is time to get
serious.
We know there are
enough local people living
here year-round in our
communities (more than
were here during peak
season less than five years
ago), that if we can gener-
ate regular, consistent
business from the locals,
we will be successful. It's
time to promote local. It's
time to get creative, come
up with special offers for
the locals, those year-
round residents who can
shop your place of business
two, three, four times a
week.
Now, you must know, no
one is paying retail any-
more. I am not sure that
they will again. So you have
to come up with a new
strategy to get them into
your place of business.
Our local people, your
friends and neighbors, who
make up Hometown News,
are going to help you.
Hometown News is going
to give all business owners
FREE
ADVERTISING. That's

for up to a year.
We are going to help all
businesses end the reces-
sion right now. Hometown
News, and our approxi-
mately 100 local resident
employees, the team who
provides you with the most
local news available each
week for free, are going into
partnership with each and
every business owner in the
communities we serve.
As a business owner, you
have to be willing to invest
in the future of your
company. If you are,
Hometown News will match
that investment each and
every week. Whatever
amount a business owner
is able to commit to the
future of their business,
Hometown News will
commit an equal amount
to that company's
future. We know that it has
been tough. It has been for
all of us. But we believe in
the power of partnerships.
If we all work together, we
will get out of this and get
out of this sooner rather
than later and stronger
than ever.
Hometown News will
continue to be free to our

Paying bills online is a snap
The monthly bill
paying ritual seems to
never end, but it has
become easier with the
Internet and online bill
paying services that most
utilities have added to their
systems.
Here's the way life used to
work every month: the bills
would come in (as they still
do), and then I'd go through
each one with the check-
book and a book of stamps.
I'd write a check, write it
in the checkbook, put it in
the envelope with that
month's payment stub,
write my return address on
the outside of the envelope,
stick a stamp on it and drop
it in the mail. Every month,
like clockwork, it was a
chore that consumed a
bunch of stamps, checks,
time, and usually resulted
in a little writer's cramp.
But how are things now?
Well, the bills still come
in every month like clock-
work, but the hassle of
writing checks and drop-
ping them in the mail is
almost a thing of the past.
Sure, the chore of sitting
down and "paying the bills"
is still there, but with my
trusty computer and my
Internet connection, I can
COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
get the job knocked out in
half the time it used to take,
and I can get a book of
stamps to last months now.
So what's involved?
Well, it helps to have a
credit card (or a "check
card" with the Visa or
MasterCard logo, that most
banks are happy to pro-
vide), a computer and an
Internet connection. It also
helps to know the Web
addresses of the companies
that you wish to pay online,
but the nice thing about
that is they usually print
the Web address some-
where on your monthly
statement.
With your bill in hand,
connect to the Internet and
navigate to the company
Web site and follow the
onscreen instructions.
Here's a hint: You will
usually find a link that says,
"pay online." Follow that
link, and you are on your
way.
But there is a catch. Each
Web site is set up different-
ly than the others, so you
have to think about what
you are trying to do on each
site and follow their
particular set of links. Some
sites may have you sign up
first to create an account
on their site but you only
have to do this once. The
next month, when you log
in with your username and
password, your informa-
tion should appear.
Not comfortable using a
credit card online? In lieu of
a credit card, many sites
will allow for electronic
fund transfers by asking for
your bank account and
routing numbers (but is
that really safer?), or you
may even have luck
checking to see if your
bank's online system allows
for Web-based bill pay to
the companies you pay
each month. Most online
banking systems these days
provide it, and if they don't,
you can also check PayPal.
They've been offering a bill
pay service for a while, and
you maybe surprised at
who you can pay with this.
Let's go back to paying
the bills individually at the
Web sites provided by the
companies.
Let's see, you can navi-
gate to www.fpl.com to pay
your electric bill (look for
the "pay my bill" link, then
"FPL pay online"). You have
to set up your account first,
but then every month, with
bill-in-hand, log on and
make a payment.
The city of Port St. Lucie
has a similar setup for your
utility bills. Just take a look
at your next bill and find a
Web address.
Now that's just a couple
of the companies that we
pay each month, and I'm
glad I took the time to learn
each system. Now when my
monthly bills come in, I log
onto the Internet, spend
about 3 minutes at each
Web site, log the payments
in my checkbook register,
and I'm done, without half
the aggravation caused by
doing it the old-fashioned
way.
Now, if only I could find a
way to use my computer to
eliminate all my bills
altogether; that would be
something!

m.
he CARS government
program, which pays
you up $4,500 for your
old gas-guzzler, clunker is
up and running. In fact, it's
exceeding my expectations
for effectiveness.
My first thought when I
heard about this program
was that most owners of
older, cheap cars would not
have the credit to buy new
ones, even with a $3,500 or
$4,500 gift from Uncle Sam.
I was wrong. A lot of
people with good credit are
trading in these old cars and
this will result in a real
short-term boost for car
sales nationwide. It's
entirely possible the
program could run out of
money before the Nov. 1
deadline. The funding for
the program is $1 billion.
This sounds like a lot, but
will fund only about 250,000
new car sales which is an
average week's sales.

From page A7
For information on the
program, you can click on
www.CARS.gov. Unfortu-
nately, as is the case with
most government programs
there is "too much" informa-
tion. The rules comprise 136
pages and are quite confus-
ing and ambiguous.
The purpose of this
column is to point out one
of the least understood, but
most important, elements of
the program. That is, what is
the true "salvage value" of
your clunker trade-in? You
are at the mercy of the
dealer to learn about this,
unless you want to shop
your clunker to the list of
government-approved
salvage companies.
There is a basic salvage
allowance of $200 under the
CARS program, assuming no
further value of the clunker
for the value of its parts. The
dealer retains $50 and $150
is added to the $3,500 or
$4,500 you qualify for.
However, that small
amount assumes the car will
be crushed and sold only for
scrap metal value. A lot of
clunkers have valuable parts
and accessories that can be
disassembled and sold
individually. These can total
thousands; a CD player,
tires, camper top, air-
conditioning compressor or
condenser, alternator, etc.
The only way to truly
maximize the true value of
your clunker is to competi-
tively shop it with several
approved salvage dealers.
The dealer you buy your
new car from should do this
for you. In my dealership,
we get bids from five
different government-
approved salvage dealers
and, of course, take the
highest bid.
The dealer you are buying
from is required by law to
disclose the amount of
money he is receiving from
the salvage dealer. You
should sign a form with this
information on it and
receive a copy signed by the
dealer. This is your money
and should be taken off the
price of the new car you are
buying.
This salvage value could
make a big difference in the
final price you pay for your
new car. When you are
shopping for your new car,
you need to compare not

only the price of the new car,
but the salvage amount each
dealer is allowing you. If he
discloses that he is allowing
you only $150, that means
you are receiving only the
scrap metal value of your
car. If your tires are in good
shape, these alone should
be worth more than $150.
You should ask the dealer to
identify the salvage compa-
ny he is selling your clunker
to. You should also ask to see
what the other bids were
from other salvage dealers.
If a dealer is getting only one
bid from one salvage dealer,
I would be very suspicious.
One of the reasons it took
the government so long to
get all of the rules of the
CARS program out was the
realization there is a huge
opportunity for fraud in the
sale of the clunker. In my
opinion, this opportunity
still exists.
What's to prevent a car
dealer from disclosing a
lower amount than the
scrap dealer actually pays
him? The scrap dealer can
pay the dealer one amount
by check and the other in
cash "under the table."
Using multiple scrap dealers
with multiple bids would go
a long way to reduce this
threat, but, unfortunately,
this is not a requirement of
the CARS program.

sense of hopelessness and
emptiness, have chronic
physical complaints,
generalized feelings of guilt
and a deep and ongoing loss
of self-esteem.
Many of these feeling are
present during the grieving
process, but the crucial
difference is that in the
clinical depression of
complicated grief, the
sufferer really doesn't see an
end in sight and the symp-
toms are always present.
There is no respite from the
pain.
One of the most interest-
ing things to me was how
normal it is to feel anger, not
only at the loss, but, at the
person who has died.

The water park at Ron Jon's Cape Caribe Resort in Cape
Canaveral is a popular place for tourists to beat the heat.
The resort also features tennis courts, miniature golf,
movie theater and basketball courts.

From page A10
Jetty Park also owns two
beach wheelchairs so dis-
abled visitors can access
the sands of Cape Canaver-
al. Large, pneumatic
wheels roll easily through
the soft sand and a built-in
beach umbrella holder
offers shade.
For thrill-seekers, a
water park is closer than
they think. There is no
need to drive to Orlando
and battle the crowds
when Ron Jon's Cape
Caribe Resort boasts its
own.
Book a room at the hotel
and try out the lazy river
ride and a 248-foot water
slide. The pool, which fea-
tures a sheer-descent
waterfall, is heated, so
even when temperatures
drop the water can be
enjoyed.
The resort also has it's
own mini golf course and
movie theater, so hotel
guests can completely take
a vacation from their nor-
mal surroundings.
Surfing, skim- and boo-
gie-boarding, sunbathing
and swimming are always
free and available year-
round on the beaches at
Cape Canaveral.
Travel east down almost
any street in the city to find
free beach access and
parking.

Cape Canaveral visit

al.org.
How dare they leave you
to cope with everything
yourself! It seems almost
unbelievable that you could
be angry with your loved
one, but that is normal.
When I started to get
depressed, feeling anger or
any other strong emotion
took more energy than I
possessed. I felt that I was
observing my life but wasn't
really part of it. I knew that
everyone around me was
worried. I had been going
for counseling but it seemed
as if more was needed. I
have been working with my
grief counselor at hospice,
but sometimes, additional
help is needed.
Next week I'll discuss
ways of dealing with
complicated grief.

incredible appreciation
for theater art and loving
every minutes of it," she
said.

Composer, writer
in audience
for premiere
Composer Stephen
Schwartz and writer David
Stern mingled with the
audience before the open-
ing night performance of
"Geppetto and Son" by
StarStruck Performing
Arts Center at the Lyric
Theatre on July 17. As they
spoke to people, they both
expressed their admira-
tion for the children and
the community.
"As we've been around
the country, we've seen
very few communities that
offer this type of opportu-
nity," Mr. Stern said. "I
hope you realize how
incredibly lucky you are."
Mr. Schwartz echoed his
comment.
"This kind of program
for children's theater is
extremely unusual," he
said. "This is quite a
remarkable organization."
The production was
poignant and funny.

JENSEN BEACH Suzy
Hammer started training as
a clown and juggler when
she saw a juggler on the
beach. That experience sent
her in search of a circus skills
course.
"It was life-changing," she
said. "I was a Realtor and I
realized that there was a
clown inside of me. I created
a couple of different charac-
ters for libraries. I travel from
Miami-Dade to St. Lucie
with interactive programs in
which kids become part of
the story."
The entertainer brings her
character, Millennia the
Muse, to the Hoke Library in
Jensen Beach on Aug. 8. She
spoke recently about the
importance of story-telling.
"Millennia the Muse is an
ancient Greek goddess who
will tell myths and fables,"
Ms. Hammer said. "There
will be magic and story-
telling and some of the kids
are in a play about Jason and
the Argonauts. Others will
wear masks as the Harpies.
Kids are welcome to wear

MARTIN COUNTY -
Her jeweled ladybug pin is
one of the first hints that
Terry Rieger is a woman
who enjoys the finer things
in life.
One look at the charm-
ing tea room she's created,
with its fine china, intri-
cately designed flatware,
crystal glasses and antique
cups and saucers, confirms
the first impression.
Tucked inside her Stuart
jewelry store, the Diamond
Tea Room and Bistro is a
gem of an eatery.
Themed in red and
black, the power colors of

ating harmonious space -
the tea room includes bold

in its chandeliers and
framed wall art.
It attracts "ladies who
lunch" and women who
meet in elegant restaurants
to socialize or raise money
for philanthropic causes.
But its budget-friendly
prices a $14.50 tab for a

made the spot a hit with
locals and diners who've

Aries-March 21-April 19
Your wonderful heart gives
you a never-ending supply
of motivation. You will
make it in life, no matter
how many challenges.
Why? You never give up.
Quitting is not in your
vocabulary. Challenges
make you stronger, lift
your spirit, put joy in your
heart and continue to cre-
ate new causes. We all
need your leadership and
humanity.
Taurus-April 20-May 20
Stand tall with your
beliefs. Plan for tomor-
row's activities the
evening before. Miracles
happen tomorrow
because the universe has
time to get involved in the
action. This is an excellent
way to live. The excite-
ment of unexpected
results happening is
directly related to this
plan. Let spirit help you
and continue to soar.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
At the last minute, when it
seems like things are not
going to work out, they
usually turn around and
work in your favor. Why?
Because the universe has
a mind of its own. It is far
greater than our own.
When a Gemini begins to
accept this over the strug-
gles in the mind and heart,
true magic happens. Try it.
You might like it.
Cancer-June 22-July 22
You have so much respect
and love from family and
friends. You are always
there to lend a helping
hand. The question is, do
you let others know about
your needs? Do you ask
for help when needed?
You are not an isolated
island, you know. This is
what friends are for. Yeah!
It's celebration time. Now
everyone feels loved.
Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
You know what you want.
You know what you need
to do to get it. The only
step needed is to refocus
on the top priorities and
take action. You excel at
this. The key to success for
a Leo is to shut the mental
process down a little. Let
your visions come alive
and then go for the gold.
Watch out world, here I
come.

From page B1
Comic relief was provid-
ed by Katrina Colletti as
the Blue Fairy. She had just
the right amount of self-
absorption as she granted
wishes.
Kevin Connor as Gep-
petto and Nathanael Bean
as Pinocchio were a touch-
ing duo, learning to appre-
ciate each other. As Strom-
boli, Philippe Arroyo
managed to speak and sing
for two, himself and a pup-
pet, and continued to
amaze the audience with
his talent.
One of the additions to
the script made by director
Jennifer Jones was the
addition of four fairies-in-
training. Allie Beltran as
Viola, Rachel Maunus as
Rose, Logan Messer as
Arancia and Chloe John-
son as Sue, nearly stole the
show.
The costumes, by Judith
Williams and Lindsey Beck
Mason, were lovely and lit-
tle girls in the audience
pursuing a nursing career.
Thanks to a donation
from the Sailfish Point
Foundation, Martin
Memorial is able to pro-
vide five $1,000 scholar-
ships to nursing students
this fall.
To be eligible for a schol-
arship, students must be
gasped when the Blue
Fairy came out in her
gown.
Choreographer Eliza-
beth Casalini managed to
create order out of chaos,
especially in the Pleasure
Island scene, where more
than 30 performers were
on stage, seemingly all in
motion.
After the performance,
Mr. Schwartz and Mr.
Stern remained to answer
questions. Mr. Schwartz
spoke of doing a show as a
learning process, where
the artists constantly try to
improve it and the work is
never truly finished.
From the applause, it
appeared the audience, at
least, was satisfied with
the result.
Accents a challenge
for cast, director
When characters in a
show are supposed to be
from another country or
region of this country, the
decision about whether
the actor should use an

accent belongs to the
director.
Sometimes, the director
has all the characters use
an accent, with varying
degrees of success.
Sometimes they use
their own voices, regard-
less of the character. Occa-
sionally, the director
makes the decision to have
actors who can use an
accent and the rest speak
in their "civilian voices."
I find bad accents dis-
tract me from following
the action on stage and
what the actors are actual-
ly saying. When only a few
of the actors have a French
or English accent and the
play takes place in a for-
eign country, it sounds the
way an orchestra sounds
when only half the instru-
ments are in tune.
I would rather hear the
words and imagine that
I'm in another country
than have a bad accent
spoil the image.

Mixed fry
a summer
treat
ROMANCING
THE STOVE
with the
Grammy Guru
ARLENE BORG
Hello smart shoppers.
Summertime calls for
finger food and there's
nothing to compare with a
mixed fry. It's not low fat,
that's for sure, but occasion-
ally, you just gotta have it.
Vegetables, breaded and
fried are delicious and always
a summertime treat. The one
I miss the most is pumpkin
flower or squash blossom
fritters. Years ago you could
buy them at local produce
stands. Now I think the only
way you can get them is if
you grow the vegetable
yourself.
While some veggies need
to be precooked, others can
be cooked raw. Enjoy. See
you next week.
PUMPKIN FLOWER
FRITTERS
(squash blossom)
1 dozen pumpkin flowers
1 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 egg
Salt and pepper
Water
Remove outer casing on
bottom of flower, peel stem.
Wash well. Mix remaining
ingredients together, adding
a little salt and pepper to
taste. Add about 2 table-
spoons water at a time until
you have a fairly thin batter.
Place one to two cups canola
oil in medium sized
saucepan.
Heat. Dip flowers into
batter and drop in oil. Fry
until golden on both sides.
Drain on paper towels.
NOTE: The oil can be
strained and refrigerated for
the next time.
EGGPLANT STIX
Serves 4
Eggplant, in my opinion, is
a vegetable that needs a lot of
help to make it palatable. If
you've ever tried steamed
eggplant, you know what I
mean. It contains a great deal
of iron and can be bitter. For
this reason there's always this
preparation.
2 medium size eggplants
flour
Peel eggplant, cut in
1/2-inch by 1/2-inch
strips. Dredge with flour then
egg wash and last in sea-
soned bread crumbs.
EGG WASH
2 eggs or egg whites or
equivalent egg substitute
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp. parsley flakes
1 tbsp. grated Italian
cheese
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. each, black
pepper and garlic powder
Beat all ingredients
together.
SEASONED
BREADCRUMBS
1 cup plain bread crumbs
1 tsp. parsley flakes
1 tbsp. grated Italian
cheese
1/2 tsp. each, salt and
garlic powder
1/4 tsp. black pepper
Blend well. Fry in a small
amount of canola oil until
golden on all sides; drain on
paper towel. Fried zucchini
maybe prepared the same
way. Other vegetables must
be partially cooked first.
Asparagus is one of the
finest vegetables you can eat.
It is packed with folic acid,
potassium, fiber and
vitamins A and C.

Golf gods didn't smile on fans of British Open
A we've been robbed!
It was a stick-up we all saw
coming, but could do noth-
ing to prevent.
For 71 holes the golf gods
shined their light on 59-year-
old Tom Watson, only to rip
the rug from under him on
the final green. I want a mul-
ligan.
When the blustery wind
and dust settled on this year's
British Open championship,
we found ourselves treated to
a wonderful tournament.
Unless, that is, you are sim-
ply a Tiger Woods fan and not
a golf fan.
Tom Watson, 26 years
removed from his eighth and
final major championship,
turned back the clock and
made all of us feel young
again. But in the end, we had
our hearts ripped out.
This was not the first time
we've been teased by the golf
gods in 2009.
Back in April there was the
Masters, led by 48-year-old
Kenny Perry. Looking to
become the oldest to don a
green jacket, all Perry needed
was a par on one of the final
two holes.
He got neither and eventu-
ally lost on the second hole of
a playoff to Angel Cabrera.
We were teased even more
on the first playoff hole, when
Perry missed the green, and
watched as his chip for birdie
stopped just an inch from
going in.
Nothing wrong with Cabr-
era winning, he certainly
deserved it. But imagine the
thrill of seeing Perry slip into
thatjacket.
Then there was the U.S.
Open last month at Bethpage
Black. Here we had the story
of Phil Mickelson trying to
win his first U.S. Open title
while his wife, Amy, waited
across the country at home
for breast cancer surgery.
To make it even better, the
gods seemingly resurrected
former world No. 1, David
Duval, and threw him into
the mix.
Instead of a wonderful
present for Phil to bring
home to Amy, or Duval win-
ning his second major, the
first when he was the world's
best player, this one would
have been while ranked
882nd, we get Lucas Glover as
champion.
Not to take anything away
from Lucas, who is a solid
player and deserved to win,
playing the most consistent
golf of the bunch down the
stretch, but his story has
already faded.
And last week we had the
open championship at Turn-
berry. Watson threatened to
dethrone Jack Nicklaus as the
most remarkable winner of a
major.
We all remember Jack's
1986 Master's triumph, but
this would have trumped
that in spades. Even Jack was
pulling for Tom to pull this
off. How much more did the
golf gods need to just deliver
instead of tease?
How truly remarkable
would a Watson win have
been? Imagine the joy of see-
ing Tom clutch the Claret Jug
Car Accident?

one last time. The open is
Tom's greatest event. He won
five of them and his appreci-
ation for the courses and his-
tory of the championship
inspired many to not only
cheer very loudly for him, but
almost adopt him as their
own.
Players who spend their
time on the champion's tour
are not supposed to win
majors. Heck, they usually
only play in them as a reward
for past accomplishments or
a win at one of the champi-
ons tour majors.
It's usually just a pat on the
back for a job well done, and
few ever see the first tee on
the weekend.
At least the royal and
ancient got everything right.
The course was fair and did-
n't favor any particular style.
There was no paramount put
on extreme length off the tee
or strength from the thick
rough. The greens weren't
faster than an Indy car, allow-
ing players to putt without
fear of rolling the ball off the
green. The only ones who got
it wrong were the golf gods.

Yes, it is summer, and if
you are going to catch
a fish, you will need to
start early.
Sunrise is the coolest part
of the day for air and water
temperatures, and that is
when the fish will be most
active. For the most number
of species, and most on the
catch list, you have to start
early.
The Indian River has all
the trout. Slot size is 15 to 20
inches; the bag limit is five,
with one over 20 inches.
Fish the shallowest water

larger size and

and into the manatee

all these fish have in
common is that bite time is
dawn. Funny thing is I've
never caught a fish with a
watch on!
Now I am not going to say

Surf anglers have had a
great week, with plenty of
fish to keep them busy. Big
jacks, big snook, whiting,
croakers, blues, pompano,
Spanish mackerels and the

catches and nice sizes.
Snook season opens Sept. 1,
and not before. Take the
barbs off the hooks for an
easy release. There's lots of
bait on the beach, why
would the fish be anywhere
else? It's like a buffet for the
fish.
Offshore, anglers will find
kings, cobia and more in 20
feet of water. If you're
looking for live baits, start at
the House of Refuge and
keep going to the old
Holiday Inn. There's lots of
bait and lots of fish.
The one catch that stands
out has been the snapper
bite. There are big man-
groves and muttons from 20
feet out on about any rock
ledge. Dolphin are still one
here and there, but the sails
are everywhere, along with
the kings and cobia.
This run of cobia has been
smaller, but there are still
some keepers. Remember,
33 inches to the fork in the
tail, is the minimum. All the
bait is up close. Play with
the bonita. When was the
