considered closing several parks to
make up for budget shortfalls, a local

want to sell, so I could probably get a
really good deal out there now," she
said.
Her instincts seem to be pointing
her in the right direction, the latest
housing sales figures show.
Sellers have slashed prices, and
houses are changing hands for an
average $169,500 this year, compared
to $227,000 in 2008, the Realtor Asso-
ciation of Martin County reports.
Down, too, are condominium
prices, which have fallen to less than
half of last year's costs. The median
selling price is currently less than
$100,000, compared to double that
around this time in 2008.
But industry analysts say less
noticeable trends are pointing to an
upswing in the market.
A key point is the 30 percent reduc-
tion in the number of properties for
sale. Having fewer houses for sale is

Fireworks,
guns land
man in jail
for July 4
By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY A
45-year-old Stuart man faces
two felony charges, after
detectives uncovered a cache
of explosives, guns and ille-
gal firearms at his home.
And although James Buhs
is now out of jail on $12,500
bond, his plans for July 4
were interrupted.
On July 1, detectives with
the Martin County Sheriff's
Office got a tip from an
unnamed source, who point-
ed them to the stash at 907
Ocean Blvd., in Stuart.
The event led to arrest of
Mr. Buhs, whose record
includes previous charges of
possession of a firearm by a
convicted felon and posses-
sion of a machine gun, said
Rhonda Irons, spokes-
woman for the Sheriff's
Office.
Law enforcement officials
charged Mr. Buhs with pos-
session of a concealed
firearm by a convicted felon
and illegal sale of fireworks.
It also sparked an ongoing
joint investigation with the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives.
Hours after getting the tip,
detectives mounted a joint
effort with the office's crimi-
nal investigations division,
tactical unit, SWAT team,
bomb disposal team and
special investigations section
to serve a search warrant on
the home, according to infor-
mation released June 2.
What they found there
shocked even veteran offi-
cers.
"Detectives discovered
inside the three-bedroom
single-family residence and
garage hundreds of boxes of
fireworks marked with
names including "city crash-
er," "solar flare," "rumble
ramble," "Molotov cocktail"
and pyroo protest," stacked
floor to ceiling, in addition to
materials for professional
displays and cylinders to
shoot fireworks into the air,"
officials said in a statement.
"Detectives have also dis-
covered a large quantity of
black powder, the compo-
nents for making black pow-
der, numerous firearms and
a large quantity of cash."
For Detective Bill Jones, a
member of the Sheriff
Office's bomb squad and 20-
year law enforcement officer,
the stash was the biggest he'd
seen in a house during his
career across two states.
It was enough, he said, to
potentially destroy several of
the houses surrounding the
Stuart home.

tomorrow, July 11 from 8
a.m.-noon at Hometown

Jungle Adventures Nature
Park and Zoo, based in
Christmas, will have staff
and animals on hand. Safari
Todd, and members of the
education department, will
provide animal interaction,
along with conservation
education briefs during the
event. There will be oppor-

Molly's House provides
temporary housing for
patients and families
receiving medical care on
the Treasure Coast.
For a $35 tax-deductible
fee, individuals, businesses
and vendors receive a 10-
foot by 10-foot booth to dis-
play items at the event.
"If people take a booth for
$35, then anything they take
in is theirs to keep," said
Louise Murtaugh, executive
director of Molly's House.
Ms. Murtaugh encourages
the community to take
advantage of the yard sale,
as opposed to holding indi-
vidual garage sales because,
"collectively, it will draw a
larger crowd, so there will
be more people and more
opportunity to sell their
items."

Mr. Laviano agrees.
One recent cause for cele-
bration: the return of multiple
offers on one property. At his
Palm City-based company,
Better Homes and Gardens
Real Estate Laviano & Associ-
ates, agents increasingly see
several buyers interested in
acquiring the same house.
"That was a thing of the past,
but now it's back," he said,
adding the emerging trend is
likely the result of shrinking
supply.
"There are some indicators
that the recovery is beginning,"
he said. "They're early signs,
but they are signs."
The local Realtor association
is set to participate in a nation-
al effort to educate consumers
about the federal rebate and
other government incentives
for first-time homebuyers.

From page Al
tion, the Halpatiokee
Regional Park is set to
nearly double in size.
The little-known Stuart
venue, that conservation-
ists refer to as the area's
best kept secret, is a rus-
tic 180-acre park.
The groups plan to
incorporate a massive
tract of state-owned land
to the south of the prop-
erty.
Their goal is to create,
within the next two years,
a more than 357-acre
nature preserve, bor-
dered on the west by
Interstate-95 and on the
east by the St. Lucie River.
The revamped park will
feature marked trails, a
larger campsite and a
learning center to teach
visitors about conserva-
tion and land preserva-
tion.
"This is exactly what
our residents expect for

sioner Patrick Hayes said
in a statement.
Development work on
the site has led officials to
discourage public use of
much of the property, but
the park maintains busy
biking and hiking trails,
as well as kayaking and
campsites.
The project has already
generated strong sup-
port.
The Treasured Lands
Foundation donated
$20,000 worth of trees to
the park, said Chuck Bar-
rowclough, the group's
executive director and a
former county staffer,
who headed the effort to
protect the environmen-
tally-sensitive land.
"We realized the coun-
ty couldn't do it all alone,"
he said.
The nonprofit has
committed to covering
the park's maintenance
and operating costs, if
county officials agree to
foot the bill for the pro-
posed learning center.
The county is likely to
spend about $2.5 million
on the expansion, offi-
cials said.
The money is set to
come from $60 million
raised from a half-cent
sales tax passed in 2006.
The entire park is set to
open in 2011, but resi-
dents can continue to use
the areas where workers
aren't present.

An Open Letter to Florida Car Dealers.
Eliminate the "Dealer Fee".
Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you
how to run your business. I "My cu
am suggesting a change that
will reward both you and your expectat
customers.

Virtually every car dealer Of eauca
in Florida adds a charge to
the price of cars he sells, a SOphistic
"dealer fee/doc fee/dealer
prep" fee ranging from $500 much hig
to nearly $1,000. This extra
charge is programmed into
your computer. It has been made illegal in
many states including California, but is still
legal in Florida. The reason you charge this
fee is simply to increase the price of the car
and your profit in such a manner that it is not
noticed by your customers. This is just plain
wrong. I used to charge a dealer fee ($495)
and when I stopped charging it a few years
ago it was scary. But I did it because I could
no longer, in good conscience, mislead my
customers. Just because everybody else
was doing the same thing, did not make it
correct.

Now, here is the good news. After eliminat-
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the
dealer fee, but because I was
towers' able to earn the trust of more
customers in buying their new
ons, level or used car. You can do the
same.
tion and Why am I writing this letter?
I'm not going to tell you that
nation are I think of myself as the new
"sheriff" that has come to
ter today." "clean up South Florida". In
fact, I am well aware that this
letter is, to some extent, self-
serving. Many people will read this letter and
learn why they should buy a car from me,
and not you. And, I am also aware that most
dealers who read this will either get angry and
ignore it or not have the courage to follow my
lead. But maybe you will be the exception. If
you have any interest in following my lead,
call me anytime. I don't have a secretary and
I don't screen any of my phone calls. I would
love to chat with you about this.

Code enforcement
What about outside storage in residential areas? There
are old cars and boats and furniture all over the place. The
people at code enforcement should get out of their office
and ride around the county, and not just wait for com-
plaints. Those who complain are threatened, so they don't
complain. They could just sit in their air-conditioned cars
and pick an area of the county and look at what's going on.
Revise system
I have a son who's incarcerated in Miami. He was sen-
tenced to 27 years. He had no weapons or drugs. It was a
racketeering charge. He has filed motions to have his sen-
tence reduced, but they've done nothing. He doesn't
deserve this sentence. But they've done nothing. I'm very
disturbed by the system.
No kids at the bar
What happened to the state laws on alcohol? Aren't they
supposed to be watching what goes on at places that serve
alcohol? I was at a restaurant and there was a child at the
bar. They serve food to children while others drink. Where
are the MADD mothers?
Too much Michael
Why, when Michael Jackson died, did every news channel
have it on all the time? A black entertainer dies and that's all
they can cover? What happened to Farrah Fawcett? I didn't
care for him, anyway.
Religious channel
Why have they taken the religious channel EWTN off the
TV? It's a shameful that they would take that channel off the
TV. There are a lot of seniors who want to watch that chan-
nel at home. Now you have to get a box, and some of us
can't afford one. I really like that Catholic channel. My hus-
band wants to watch what he wants to watch, and now I
can't see that channel.
Health care plans
This is a comment on the new health care plan. Are we
this stupid that we can't stand up and tell the powers that be
what we want? We'll be the ones paying for their plan. They
will get to go to the best doctors while we continue to suffer.
National health care
If you think it is smart for the government to take over the
nation's health care system, consider the care currently
being provided to our servicemen and women by the Veter-
ans Administration.
The VA admits the backlog of claims continues to grow
and is approaching 1 million. Many of these young people
have been severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
While the bureaucrats struggle to catch up, some injured
vets are being forced into paying their medical bills using
their own personal credit cards.
What are kids learning?
One half of public school seniors do not recognize the
names of Winston Churchill or Joseph Stalin nor can they
locate the half-century in whichWorldWar I occurred. What
does this tell about the state of the nation's public schools?
Fly a flag
Our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are risking their lives
to protect our freedoms. Wouldn't it be nice if locally, we
were awash in American flags this Independence Day as a
demonstration of our appreciation that this nation is both
great and free?

Summer is a good time for small changes
It's summertime, a
good time to think
about ways to relax,
even for a little while.
While vacations and spa
visits may be out of reach
for a lot of us, there are
things we can do to take
mini-breaks to help take
some of the pressure of
daily life and send it
packing for a little while.
I found these tips,
which I've adapted, in a
pamphlet from the YWCA
of Greater Pittsburgh.
Yes, I am still going
through boxes and
clearing things out; it's a
resolution that will
probably take all year.
Sometimes, though, I
come across some useful
things.
Instead of starting a
diet, pick one thing that
you will not eat for one
week and see how it
makes you feel. If you're
successful, do it for
another week and per-
haps take away something
else, or substitute a fruit
or vegetable for the item
you've removed.
Do one thing you're
afraid to do. It doesn't
have to be sky-diving. Join
a group, speak to the
person next to you at the
gym or try an exercise
class. If it doesn't work
out, try something else.
Nurture yourself. Get a
massage or a manicure. If
it's not in your budget,
how about a polish
change? Even a nice hand
cream can make you feel
pampered. Feeling
pampered is a state of
mind. It doesn't have to
cost a lot of money.
Do a new exercise that
seems fun and challeng-
ing. Try yoga or tai chi or
take a dancing class.
Learn something new
and exciting about
yourself. As I have men-
tioned before, I really love
my yoga classes. What has
surprised me is how
strong and flexible I am.
Find new ways to
laugh at stress and at
yourself.
Walk in the park with a
pet or a child. We have
beaches here. If you don't
have a pet or a child,
reach into your inner
child and remember how
much fun it used to be to
walk in the sand, pick up
shells or wade in the
water.
Go on a date with
yourself at least once a
month. Even if you only
go out for coffee, taking
time for yourself is
important to refresh your
mind and spirit.
Ask for help when you
need it and feel strong
doing it.
Do something fun for
someone else or the
community. Giving back
is a great way to banish
the blues. Thinking about
bringing a smile to
someone else also brings
one to you.

Dispelling a few common computer myths
here are a lot of
myths surrounding
computers out
there, some based on
reality, some based on
"the way technology used
to be" and some based on
plain old fear and para-
noia.
Some computer myths
tend to be so prevalent
that I often see veteran
computer users falling
prey to some of them.
This week I thought I
would try to dispel some
of these myths.
The first myth is, "if you
connect to the Internet,
you will immediately
become a target for some
hacker who is out to steal
your identity."
This myth is born out of
paranoia and misinforma-
tion. We have all seen the
stories in the news, about
some hacker getting
caught accessing some big
company database or
about some poor people
getting their identities
stolen, but the fact of the
matter is, most hackers
just aren't interested in
you.
Hackers tend to go after
"big" targets, such as
corporate databases, and
don't spend too much
time hunting individual
end users.
But that's not what the
Internet security software
companies want you to
COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
think. There is a big
market for computer
security programs and
firewall software, but if it's
not configured or installed
correctly (which is most of
the time) it can bring your
machine to a crawl and
still leave you vulnerable.
As long as you have an
up-to-date anti-virus
program installed and
running, and have all the
current operating system
updates installed, you
should be safe plugging
your machine into the
Internet.
If it's identity theft you
are worried about, I would
be more concerned about
all those big corporate
entities out there that
already have your person-
al information on file.
It's databases such as
those that are the real
targets. Why take the time
to hack into one user's
machine for one identity,
when there are so many
other systems out there
that hold thousands (even
millions) of identities in
their databases?
Another common myth
is, "regularly defragging
my hard drive will make it
run faster."
This myth has its origins
from the way technology
used to be. Sure, if you are
running an old 486
machine with Windows 95
and a 1 gig hard drive,
defragging it periodically
will clean things up a bit
and give you a noticeable
increase in performance.
If, on the other hand,
you are running some-
thing a little more modern
(any machine built within
the last five years) defrag-
ging the hard drive all the
time to increase perform-
ance is often just a waste
of time.
Any increase in per-
formance gained by
defragging will typically
be un-noticeable. Sure, it's
nice to see all those red
areas turn blue when you
do defrag a modern
machine, but don't be
fooled. You aren't gaining
much. I will concede that
running defrag periodical-
ly to "tidy up" is good
practice, but it's not the
cure-all that some people
still think it is.
The next myth comes
from unclear advertise-
ments that some comput-
er manufacturers run.
Many ads today for new
computers tout their
systems as being "wireless
ready" right out of the
box. And, to a degree, this
may be true, with things
such as WiFi chips being
built into motherboards,
but the thing the ads tend
to leave out (or bury in
fine print) is that you need
to be in an area of wireless
service for it to work.
If you don't have wire-
less Internet access and
are contemplating buying
a new computer that's
wireless ready, because
you are under the impres-
sion that it will connect to
the Internet right out of
the box, you are about to
make a mistake.
All this "wireless ready"
stuff means is that you
won't need any extra
hardware to connect to an
existing wireless service. It
doesn't mean that you can
just turn it on and be
online as some people
have been led to believe.
In order for these
systems to work, they
need to be in a wireless
"cloud;" either your own
wireless service, DSL or
cable plugged into a
wireless router, or a public
wireless hotspot, such as
those found in many
hotels, airports and coffee
shops.
I hope this helps and
until next week, happy
computing.

New car wash gives 'spa' treatments
By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY The
family behind Nate's Auto
Spa doesn't want customers
to just leave with clean vehi-
cles.
Nick Fiorella, his wife,
Sharon, and son, Nate, take
the car wash concept one
step further, offering a
range of fragrances and
treatments for the boats,
vans and other vehicles that
pull into their newly
opened state-of-the-art
Stuart enterprise.
It's part of a two-year
effort to create a self-service
car wash that gives cus-
tomers several options:
touch-free washers or those
with soft brushes; automat-
ed cleaning bays or do-it-
yourself stations.
The extra touches are
telling, as they reflect the
family's commitment to its
business through outstand-
ing customer service.
"A lot of places you go,
you don't have the option of
brushes or touch-free

(cleaning)," Mr. Fiorella
said. "Here you do."
The idea is to offer a
menu of choices that make
the "spa" a one-stop service
area for clients.
For those who prefer to
avoid even soft brushes, the
touch-free bay offers a pow-
erful clean, while ensuring
that nothing but water and
cleaners touch the vehicle.
Users of the self-serve
bays can opt to wash, wax,
clean wheels, shampoo car-
pets, vacuum or even get
bugs off their windshields.
For between $5 and $12
- or $3 less for clients who
present the company's
coupon printed in Home-
town News for any wash -
users can opt for foaming
tire cleaners, protective fin-
ishes, spot-free rinses and a
slew of other services.
For those in the self-serve
bays, an onsite vending
machine with cleaning tow-
els, windshield protectors,

cleaners and a variety of
other products, ranging in
price from 75 cents to $1.50,
means that customers don't
have to worry about bring-
ing their own supplies,
employees say.
Don't worry about gather-
ing armfuls of coins either
for the machines, they add,
because the center accepts
all major credit cards for
washes and treatments.

Editor's note: This column
originally ran April 28,2006.
Many states have
laws prohibiting
car dealers from
adding "fees" onto the
prices they quote you.
Unfortunately, Florida is not
one of these states. The
state law in Florida requires
only that the dealers
disclose on the buyers'
order that this additional
charge is not a local, state or
federal fee, but is actually
just profit to the dealer.
Almost every car dealer-
ship in Florida has this extra
profit printed on their
buyer's order, under an
assortment of labels such as
"dealer fee", "doc fee" and
dealer prep". You will not see
it on the car's price sticker
and you will probably not
hear any verbal disclosure
by the sales person or
manager, unless you ask. If
you ask, you will be told that
"all other dealers charge
this" and this is almost true.
Florida law also requires
that when a dealer has this
additional profit printed on
his buyer's order, he must
not delete it for some
customers and charge it to
others. The only way he can
effectively eliminate this
extra profit is by reducing
the quoted selling price of
the car by this amount, but
keep the dealer fee amount
that is printed on the
buyer's order. This is rarely
done because dealers do
not pay their salesmen or
managers a commission on
the dealer fee.
If you demand the price
be reduced to compensate
for the dealer fee, it cuts the
salesman's commission.
Dealer fees range from
$500 to $900 and a typical
salesman's commission is 25
percent, costing the sales-
man $125 to $225.
Florida law requires a
dealer include the dealer fee
in the price of an advertised
car. This is often ignored by
dealers advertising on the
Internet and in direct mail
because it is below the radar
screen of the Attorney
General's office.
In newspaper, TV and
radio ads, one car is adver-
tised at a low price, with a
seemingly innocuous
designation such as
"No. 1234B" (the stock
number of the car). All there
is to tell the buyer is that
only one car is available at
this price.
Another common tactic is
a fine print disclosure at the

"price good on date of
publication only." The
odds of being able to buy
one of these cars at the
advertised price are not
good. Not only is there
only one car with the
price good for just one
day, but the salesman
receives no commission
or a much smaller
commission if he sells
you this car.
My advice is not to pay
much attention to
advertised car prices. Do
your shopping on the
Internet or by telephone.
Insist on an "out the
door" price including
everything except sales
tax and license tag.
If buying a new car, get
several out the door
prices quoted on the

Residents have started to
take note. The car wash is a
popular weekend stop for
boat owners, who stop by
after fishing trips to flush
their boats' engines.
On a recent Tuesday, sev-
eral motorists pulled in for
quick vacuums and air
freshener purchases.
But most customers will
never get to see one of the
center's other special fea-
tures: an onsite recycling
center that salvages and
treats about 65 percent of
water used in the wash and
rinse cycles in a conserva-
tion effort.
The car wash is open 24
hours daily, but unlike
many automated car wash-
es that are typically
unmanned, the Fiorellas
staff their business during
normal business hours.
They also post their contact
information at the site, and
use surveillance cameras
for remote and onsite mon-
itoring. At night, the prop-
erty is brightly lit.
The idea is to reassure
customers that assistance is
never far away, said Mr.
Fiorella, a 25-year insur-
ance agent who operates a
four-branch insurance
agency on the Treasure
Coast.
"That's important. People
like to know there's always
someone there," he said.
Nate's Auto Spa is located
at 3308 N.W. Main Ave., just
off of Jensen Beach Blvd., in
Stuart.

HEMATITE
Many vintage pieces of
jewelry are found with
hematite in sterling silver.
This is a gemstone that has
been used for centuries.
The name hematite
(Greek-blood hema)( in
some countries, also called
bloodstone) is derived from
the fact that, when cut, the
saw coolant becomes col-
ored red. The English
name bloodstone, however,
is applied to a chalcedony
variety. In mineralogy, well-
crystallized hematite vari-
eties are called iron luster,
finely crystallized ones red
iron ore or red ironstone,
and radial aggregates are
called red glass head.
When cut into very thin
plates, hematite is red and
transparent; when pol-
ished it is metallic and
shiny. Often mistakenly
called black diamond ,
these will not go through
any heat processes.
Sometimes these are
bead-set in jewelry and
many times just epoxy
holds them in the jewelry.
We do have replacement
gems in hematite for any
repairs a person might
need. Just bring in the
piece that needs to have
any hematite replaced as it
is not an expensive gem-
stone.

Beach:
nature,

By Suzanne Grill
For Hometown News
At the turn of the 20th cen-
tury, Ormond Beach was
known as a warm weather
playground for the rich and
famous, but you don't need to
be a Rockefeller to enjoy fun
summer days in their old
stomping grounds.
With a diverse mix of natu-
ral beauty and historic charm,
Ormond Beach, just north of
Daytona Beach in Volusia
County, is the perfect spot for
a one- or two-day respite.
The famous Ormond Loop
is a designated Florida Scenic
Highway 33 miles of pro-
tected riverside and interior
landscapes with many points
of access and scenic pull-out
spots. Along the Loop are
plenty of free or inexpensive
parks, outdoor activities, cul-
tural and historical sites,
shops, and restaurants to sat-
isfy everyone in the family.
Begin at the corner of
Granada Boulevard (State
Road 40) and Beach Street,
traveling north.
Starting out in the coolness
of early morning is best (parks
open at 8 a.m.), and don't for-
get to bring your hat, sun-
glasses, sunscreen, insect
repellant, sturdy shoes and a
camera, since there will be
many great photo opportuni-
ties. More than 150 plant
species and loads of wildlife
including deer, tortoises, birds
and butterflies inhabit Bulow
Creek, Tomoka, and North
Peninsula State Parks, all with
entrances on the Loop. All
three parks have designated

"somebody" to get their
money back from Bernie
Madoff?
Did he hold them up at
gunpoint and take their
money? Of course not. Had
they ever heard of "caveat
emptor?"
Of course they had. Had
they ever heard "If it
sounds too good to be true,
it probably is?" Of course
they had.
Did those warnings apply
to them? Of course not.
They're different.
If they had been total
winners, would they have
cheated on their taxes?
What do you think? There's
a strange attitude in this
country today.
Everybody expects to be
a winner, no matter how
stupid they act.
Everybody from GM, AIG
and investment idiots
expects to do foolish things
and when they lose, they
expect "somebody" to
make up the losses.
And who is that "some-
body"?
Why, the government, of
course, AKA taxpayers.

vista points and small local
parks. You can stop and enjoy
the beach at any access
point, and satisfy your
hunger and thirst at any
number of fresh seafood
restaurants, many of which
are oceanfront or offer ocean
views.
If you make it back down to
Granada Boulevard before
you've eaten, you'll find even
more dining choices includ-
ing Thai Erawan, Lulu's
Oceanside Grill and Billy's
Tap Room, a local landmark.
Shopping opportunities
abound on the beachside
and include Granada
Gourmet, Bikini Co., Adorn-
ments and several other spe-
cialty shops.
Continuing west along
Granada from the main
shopping district, you'll see
the MacDonald House,
home to the Ormond Beach
Historical Trust, which in
addition to photographs,
video, and other exhibits,
offers trolley tours to more
than 30 local sites.
Then there's the Ormond
Memorial Art Museum and
Gardens, with its changing
gallery exhibits set amongst
the tropical gardens, with
nature trails, fish ponds and a
recently restored painter's
cottage.
Sitting regally on the river-
front is The Casements, the
famous former home of mil-
lionaire and philanthropist
John D. Rockefeller, a historic
treasure on the banks of the
Halifax River. Unfortunately
it is currently closed for reno-
vations, but its massive gar-
den area is open after its own
recent renovation and many
arts-related events are
planned here throughout the
year.
A newer attraction in
Ormond Beach is Destina-
tion Daytona, Bruce Ross-
meyer's 150-acre Harley
Davidson Mecca. Located
where U.S. 1 meets 1-95 (Exit
273), it is home to the area's
largest Harley Davidson deal-
ership, several restaurants,
bars, shops, a hotel and out-
door concert venue.
Special events at Destina-
tion Daytona include a Biker
Block Party on the first Satur-
day of the month with live
music, a bike show, free BBQ
and a variety of vendors. A
Swap Meet on the second
Sunday of the month is free.
It's like a giant garage sale -
bikes, cars, antiques, craft
items you never know
what you will find for sale.
New this year, Destination
Daytona presents its Arts &
Crafts Fair on the third Sun-
day of the month, from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m., in the shade of
the Coca-Cola Pavilion.
Admission is free, and pro-
ceeds from vendor fees bene-
fit Camp Boggy Creek for
children. Upcoming fairs are
July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 20.
A variety of nighttime
events are also planned for
the Pavilion. Tickets are avail-
able at Ticketmaster, Desti-
nation Daytona and other
locations. (Visit www.dayton-

Philippe Arroyo as Strom-
boli, Nathanael Bean as
Pinocchio and Katrina Col-
letti as the Blue Fairy.
Mr. Connor and Mr.
Arroyo were rehearsing lead
roles in "The Producers" at
the same time as they pre-
pared for "Geppetto and
Son," and the director is
astonished by them.
"I am so proud of them,"
she said. "I'm excited for
them to show the range of
their acting abilities."
She also has praise for
Keith Lawson, a character
actor, who plays multiple
roles in both shows.
"Here is a young man, 15,
who's embracing so many
different characters," she
said. "He's to be lauded, just
like the protagonists."
The show, which runs
about an hour, is suitable
for all ages. It tells the
Pinocchio story from the
viewpoint of his father,
Geppetto.
"The show is funny," Ms.
Jones said. "Everyone
knows that Pinocchio
learns about lying, but the
show is about Geppetto's
journey as a father. That's
what makes this show and
story unique."
Katie Rodgers, a 12-year-
old member of the ensem-
ble from Palm City, paused
during a rehearsal with cho-
reographer Elizabeth
Casalini to talk about what
a thrill the venture is.
"I'm very excited," she
said. "It's a once-in-a-life-
time experience. It's never
happened in Stuart. It's
nerve-wracking because

You represent the highest
aspirations in human life.
The universe chose you to
begin the human parade
and journey. You give us
strength, endurance, sure-
footedness, wisdom, spirit,
great heart, generosity, and
direction. Wow! You have
the supreme blessing of
spirit and you give it right
back. Are we all blessed or

"Keep on the sunny side,"
as Mother Maybelle Carter
used to say. Make a plan
and work your plan. Life
always presents challenges.
How you react makes all
the difference. Make the
best of it. This way, you
have no regrets. Your life is
well lived. Keep a lighter
touch and continue to
move on and up to your
higher dreams.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
Life is filled with opportuni-
ties and challenges. The
starting point is to live with-
in your means and make
the best of what you have
right now. Then, locate
areas that need to be
improved and work on
these. Move things forward
a little each day until you
see change happening.
Then go all out and see
splendid results.
Cancer-June 22-July 22
Your mind, heart and spirit
are working in harmony
now. Now is a good time to
move your best ideas for-
ward. It is your time at the
helm of the zodiac. Listen
to your deeper urges, make
decisions and take action.
Just wait until it feels right.
Then go all out, keep your
spirit up and winning is
assured.
Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
Leos are high spirited. The
lion roars where others fear
to tread. This unparalleled
spirit and great courage
moves you toward success
in all adventures. You may
strike out occasionally but
you never give up. The term
"lion hearted" is true. It
keeps your wit honed to a
razor's edge. There is no
stopping you now.

The evening really
belonged to the gradu-

It's hard to single any-
one out, but "I Dreamed a

Colleen Phillips and Jean
Ferreira, brought a tear.
The ensemble numbers
were crisp, the smaller
numbers funny or

It was wonderful to see

Playing hilly course
presents new challenges
Something that we
seldom see here in
south Florida is a
course with lots of
elevation change.
Therefore, when I
travel, I love to find a hilly
course to place a peg in
the ground and take a few
swings.
Just north of Orlando,
in Clermont to be exact,
lays Sanctuary Ridge Golf
Club. Built on the steep
slopes of rolling hills, this
track fits the bill.
Formerly called Dia-
mond Players Club,
Sanctuary Ridge is now
managed by Billy Casper
Golf. Under new manage-
ment, the course has
overcome a couple years
of neglect from its previ-
ous owner and has again
become the fine course
that many of my col-
leagues rave about.
The course's clubhouse
occupies the highest
point on the property,
giving a dramatic view of
much of the course and
community as you lace
up your shoes and stretch
those golf muscles.
Not only is there a
plethora of elevation
change on this layout, but
there are no parallel
fairways and 18 distinc-
tive holes. Depending on
the wind and pin posi-
tions, holes may play as
much as 50 yards longer
or shorter from one day
to the next.
Sanctuary Ridge
features five sets of tees,
the longest of which
comes in at just more
than 7,000 yards. The
shortest tees play to a
shade over 5,000 yards.
When deciding on which
tees to play from, be sure
to remember that some
holes will play much
shorter or longer than the
stated length, due to the
huge elevation changes.
Here, course architect
Terry LaGree, created a
course that requires a
tough mental game. You
have to decide the proper
line for your tee shot on
every hole. There are a
few holes where you can
bite off the corner, and
some where you need to
play for a longer
approach just to get a
reasonably flat lie in the
fairway. At this course,
one cannot simply tee it
up and rip away without
concern.
The course starts off
with a nice par-5. In order
to keep from having a
blind second shot over a
hill to a green that sits
well below the fairway,
one must hit a solid and
lengthy drive. The second
hole is a long, downhill
par-3. From the back tees,
it's difficult just to see the
top of the flag. Proper
club selection is a must.
The next three holes
play up and down the
hills. The par-3 sixth hole
is likely my favorite. This
medium-length hole
features a slightly uphill
tee shot to a green,
guarded by a deep bunker
on the front.
With the pin tucked up
front, just over the
bunker, I hit a perfect
pitching wedge, and my
son watched as the ball
landed, hopped once
then rolled into the hole.
My first ace! I missed it,
as I had leaned down to
pull my tee from the
ground after seeing the
ball bounce on the green.
The front nine ends
with a gorgeous par-4
that sits at the bottom of
a ravine with a lake to the
right. The green however,
sits half-way up the hill,
making your second shot
longer and more difficult
that you'd think.
The back nine begins
with the first drivable
par-4. The tee sits atop
the hill, near the ninth
green. The green sits
down by the lake. It's a
true risk-reward hole.
The next three holes
play along the lake and
marsh before a long trek
up hill to the par-3 14th.
From there, it's onto some

Fishing early is the key
inside or out, the best
bite will be early in the
morning.
Snook, tarpon, mack-
erels, blues, jacks and even
a few Pompano are six
reasons to get to the surf's
edge when the sun comes
up.
There's lots of bait on
the edge, it must be
breakfast time. Up close to
the edge you'll find snook,
tarpon and jacks to test
your ability. A little further
out you'll find in the glass
minnows along with
mackerels and blue fish.
Just a cast east will put you
in their zone.
These fish have been in
all day, you can see them
swim past and there have
been a few taken, but the
best bite has been the
early hour.
The river is seeing a lot
of action from early to
mid-morning. Use top
water lures until dawn,
then switch to live or soft
plastic.
There's been some good
trout, some nice reds and
plenty of short snook.
Most grass flats are
holding fish until that big
bright sun heats up the
water. After that, the fish
are in deep or shaded
water. Anglers will still

of the best finishing holes
I have played in some
time.
The 15th is a severe
downhill, dogleg-left, par-
4 that requires precision
from the tee. I chose a
poor line and paid for it
with a downhill lie from
the rough for my
approach shot.
Sixteen is another
downhill par-4 with
cavernous bunkers
guarding the shortest
route. Even a short drive
here leaves you with a
mid- to short-iron to a
well protected green.
The 17th is a short
uphill par-4 that is
reachable from the tee.
Your approach is to a
shallow green, guarded by
several deep bunkers.
The finishing hole is the
longest par-4 on the
course and plays along
the top of a steep hill. Any
tee shot going left could
wind up 40 feet or more
below the green. Again,
you find a deep bunker
guarding the green.
After our round, my son
and I enjoyed a nice
lunch and a few cold
beverages to celebrate my
first hole-in-one. It was
truly a great day!

find nice fish, but they'll
have to work for them.
Snapper, drum, sheep-
head, ladyfish and jacks
have been hanging out at
the bridges. There's deeper
water and plenty of shade
make this an excellent
environment for this
group.
Watch the tide chart,
catch incoming water and
take home a few pompano.
Jigging spoons is a
favorite.
Offshore, bait schools
are up close and the week
of westerly winds has kept
the ocean flat.
Small boats fishing the
tarpon, permit, snook and
cobia have had an excel-
lent week. Again, fish
early.
Anglers fishing deep
have been hot and cold.
They've had some luck
with wahoo from 200-feet,
nice kings from 80-feet,
and some small black fins
chasing the bonita schools
that are everywhere. It's
been tough fishing for this
angler.
Bait is not a problem,
but the west wind has
pushed every thing deep.
There are plenty of sails
roaming the area, but the
best luck has been up
close in the 20 to 30-foot
range.
The wind has shifted
from the southeast. Lets
hope it stays for a few days
and maybe the dolphin
will show up.
It's beautiful outside.
Just don't forget the sun
block.
