HOW WEIRD
IS THAT!
SEAN MCCARTHY

-*
Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound to find stories
that are just too bizarre to
be true.
Here's a sampling, edited
for length. And remember,
just because it' online
doesn't mean it's true!
From
www.azcentral.com:
Election decided by
drawing cards. An election
that was tied in Arizona was
decided by cutting a deck of
cards, on the grounds that
they "couldn't do a paintball
showdown."
From news.sky.com:
Tattooed teenager left
seeing stars. A teenager
who claims she asked a
tattooist for three tiny stars
on her face ended up
covered in 56 stars.
From www.metro.co.uk:
Barack Obama defeats fly
in epic battle. Barack
Obama can now list "fly
destroying ninja" to his
already impressive resume,
after he took out an insect
during a TV interview.
Another from
www.metro.co.uk: Philip-
pines politician: dead
people shouldn't vote. A
politician in the Philippines
has suggested it might be a
good idea to take the names
of dead people off voter
rolls.
From tech.yahoo.com:
Facebook fasting. In this
age of online networking,
some Catholics ponder
giving up Facebook for
Lent.
From Fark.com: Weird
anomalies. Scientists
discuss "sonic" black hole
that sucks in all sound, and
are surprised no one seems
to have heard of it before.

Check advisories on swine flu

before international travel

By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY News of
several Treasure Coast residents'
quarantine in China, on fears they
might have contracted the H1N1
virus, called the swine flu, have
prompted calls for caution among
international travelers.
The news comes on the heels of
the World Health Organization's
phase 6 alert, which declared the

flu a pandemic or worldwide
health concern.
In the spotlight for local officials,
following the quarantine of Palm
Beach residents in Asia is China.
"I urge anyone planning on trav-
eling to China this summer to use
caution to be aware of the strict
quarantine procedures the Chi-
nese government has instituted,"
said Congressman Tom Rooney, R-
Jupiter, whose constituency
includes Martin County.

Chinese officials
require arrivals to Go
pass through ther-
mal-scanning
checkpoints,
according to a
statement from
the congress-
man's office. If
health officials suspect a passen-
ger on an arriving flight of having
the H1N1 virus, all passengers and
crew are subject to quarantine in

MARTIN COUNTY-An
offer to enter an appren-
tice program with starting
salaries upwards of
$45,000 awaited a group of
graduates from Indian
River State College's Power
Plant Technology Institute.
SThe group of 17 students
walked away with job
offers from Florida Power
& Light after a two-year
study program. They are
set to start their new jobs
by Aug. 1.
Among the recent gradu-
ates is Ryan Flutie, a 22-
year-old Jensen Beach resi-
dent, who -worked for a

fishing pole manufactur-
ing company while he
attended IRSC as a full-
time student.
"It was all I could do to
have a social life, but it was
definitely worth it, many
times over, especially
nowadays," he said.
Twelve graduates, who
already worked for FPL,
got promotions, company
executives said.
"This is one of the stories
that's just good news," said
Chrys Panayiotou, who
chairs the college's depart-
ment of electronic engi-
neering technology.
The job offers came as
part of an agreement

between the college, FPL
and the International
Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers to train workers
for careers in electrical
engineering and related
fields.
- It was a key part of an
effort to replenish FPL's
aging workforce and create
a pipeline of new, profes-
sional workers who can
remain close to home, ,said
Mano Nazar, the compa-
ny's senior vice president
and chief nuclear officer.
"(Today) in the nuclear
industry, as much as 35
percent of the current
workforce may be able to
retire in five years. This is

great news for (graduates),
as the doors of opportunity
swing wide open," he said.
As unemployment
reaches record levels
nationwide, Mr. Flutie and
the other graduates say
they felt lucky to be start-
ing on a new career path.
The electrical engineer-
ing major's early pay could
reach $25 per hour or close
to $60,000 annually.
"Two years ago, I didn't
think things were going to
be like this economically.
When they picked me out
of the water, I was just real-
ly excited. But now, this is
much more than just a
career," he said.

Free HIV tests at county locations

County marks national HIV testing day

By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY-
Free HIV tests offered at
an Indiantown store on
June 26 were among the
latest efforts by the Martin
County Health Depart-
ment to help fight the virus
that causes AIDS.
On June 26; from 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. the group's clini-

cians were on hand at
Mac's Grocery store at
16968 S.W Charleston St.,
Indiantown.
It followed a similar
undertaking two days earli-
er at Pettway Grocery in
Hobe Sound.
The events were part of
the department's effort to
mark National HIV Testing
Day on June 27, which
seeks to raise awareness of

the virus that state officials
say affect 90,000 Floridians.
The fight against HIV is
part of an ongoing battle
against sexually transmit-
ted diseases or STDs.
"People need to be
empowered about sexually
transmitted diseases, and
know that there are multi-
ple options for treating
them," said Karen Thomas,
the health department's

epidemiologist, a specialist
in disease control.
Healthcare workers diag-
nosed 2,558 new STD cases
on the Treasure Coast last
year, and reports show that
a Florida resident is
exposed to an STD every
2.5 minutes, with a diagno-
sis issued every five min-
utes in the state.

Raising

funds for

summer

camps

By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY -
Before the economic
downturn, the Martin
County Parks and Recre-
ation Department used to
typically raise $13,000 for
its scholarship program to
help send local children to
summer camp.
But this year, its efforts
yielded only $3,000, about
$10,000 shy of its usual
intake.
A matching grant from
the Treasured Lands Foun-
dation helped double the
.sum, but the group still;
needs to make up for the
shortfall,- administrators
say.
That's why the group
teamed with local restau-
rant Mulligan's Beach
House for a fundraiser.
The eatery donated 15
percent of its revenue
from June 18 to the camp
program, which came to
more than $500.
"We need the support of
local businesses now more
than ever," said Lauren
Mihalik, who coordinates
the county's Lanford Park
Camp. "Sending kids in
need to camp is a priority.
I can't think of a better
way to spend dollars
raised in our community:"
With more than 20 fami-
lies on the Parks and
Recreation Department's
waiting list, county staff
and their supporters at
Mulligan's say they feel
especially motivated to
raise enough for scholar-
ships.
"These are families who
otherwise would not be
able to afford to have their
kids in camp this sum-
mer," said Angela Gomez,
a Parks department
staffer. "Without this pro-
gram, a lot of these kids
may be home alone."
The department opened
three camp locations at
Langford Park and the
Hobe Sound and Palm City
community centers that
will last throughout the
summer. It offers a variety
of full-service,' full-day
camps, priced at about
$75 per week, which
include about 16 field
trips, no registration fees
and price breaks for fami-
lies with more than one
child.
Themes include theater,
fishing, surfing, wrestling,
various sports and art,
among several others.

An Open Letter to Florida Car Dealers.

Eliminate the "Dealer Fee".

Fellow Florida Car Dealers, if you don't
know me, I should tell you that I don't profess
to be some "holier than thou" car dealer who
was always perfect for the past 38 years.
When I look at some of my past advertising
and sales tactics, I am not always proud.
But I have evolved as my customers have
evolved. My customers' expectations, level
of education and sophistication are much
higher today. Your customers are no different.
My remarks are made sincerely and with a
positive intent toward you and your custom-
ers. I am not trying to tell you "
how to run your business. I "AM CUS
am suggesting a change that
will reward both you and your expectati
customers.
l.C 1-

Now, here Is the good news. After elimina
ing the dealer fee my profit per car did drop
by about the amount of the dealer fee, but
my customers realized I was now giving them
a fair shake and quoting a complete out-the-
door price with no "surprises". And the word
spread. My volume of car sales began to rise
rapidly. Sure, I was making a few hundred
dollars less per car, but I was selling a lot
more cars. I was and am selling cars to many
of your former customers. My bottom line
has improved, not because I eliminated the

AMBER
In the ancient Cheddar Gorge of
Somerset in England, there is a
huge cavern. Since it was first dis-
covered more than a century ago it
has yielded many rare artifacts
and bones from the ancient past,
including even a complete seated
skeleton, nine thousand.years old.'
But in 1950 this place, named
"Gough's Cave" after the Victorian
sea captain who found it, also
yielded what is perhaps the oldest
piece of traded gem-type material
ever discovered. It is dark red and
rather dirty, like a scuffed piece of
translucent toffee, and it is almost
the size of a dozen credit cards
stacked together. It is a piece of
amber and it was traded at least
12,500 years ago. It looks like an
unlikely treasure, but treasure it is
because it is possibly the first indi-
cation we have today of a human
fascination with amber that has
lasted since prehistoric times. At
the time of its discovery there was
no way to ascertain where the
amber in Gough's Cave had come
from--whether from Britain or far-
ther afield. However, fourteen
years later a professor at Vassar
University in New York came up
with an answer. Using dental
equipment designed for tooth fill-
ings, he ground up a tiny fragment
of the amber, and then observed
how it absorbed infrared light. He
determined that it was of Baltic ori-
gin and was therefore around forty
million years old. In addition to the
piece found in Gough's Cave,
there is evidence in ancient tombs
and caves all over Europe, and
even in North Africa and the
Middle East, that Baltic amber
traveled for many miles, from
Stone Age times to now. Now
days amber is often seen as a
poor cousin to the other treasures
of the jewel box. It tends to be
light, soft, cheap and not very rare
at all. But ancient history and
some remarkable physical quali-
ties have tneant that it has some-
times been valued more highly
than gold. We are here to help you.
with your amber pieces whether it
is repair, restringing or just a dis-
cussion about the jewelry.

MARTIN COUNTY -
The Education Foundation
of Martin County has
secured a $10,000 champi-
ons of healthy kids grant
from General Mills Foun-
dation.
The award is in recog-
nition of Port Salerno Ele-
mentary School's efforts to
promote positive physical
activity and healthy food
choices among its stu-
dents, by creating and
implementing the "30-
Minute Club" as part of the
daily routine.
In response to a growing
trend of obesity, lack of
physical activity among
youth and a need for
improved nutrition, this
program s providing stu-
dents with the opportunity
to participate in more than
20 different physical activ-
ity clubs during the regular
school day at no addition-
al cost to families.
Examples include dance,
yoga, Pilates, karate and
Wii Fit. Students have the
opportunity to make new
club selections every nine-
week period. All Port
Salerno Elementary
School staff members

select an activity to pro-
mote in a daily "club" for-
mat for the 30-Minute
Club.
In addition to the physi-
cal activity clubs, the pro-
gram stresses healthy food
choices, good nutrition
and family involvement.
Through the Fresh Fruit
and Vegetable program,
funded by U. S. Depart-
ment of Agriculture, each
child is provided with a
fresh fruit or vegetable
snack during each school
day.
Family nights and riutri-
tion newsletters are also
used to strengthen the link
between home and school
lessons.
The General Mills Foun-
dation, in partnership with
the American Dietetic
Association Foundation
and the President's Coun-
cil on Physical Fitness,
developed the grant pro-
gram in 2002.
Each year since incep-
tion, the foundation
awards 50 grants of
$10,000 each to communi-
ty-based groups that
develop creative ways toi

Unfair work environment

It's unfair that employers can treat their employees like sec-
ond-class citizens just because they know we are desperate
for work. We all know the economy is in dire straits, and
unfortunately, we know there are lots of people who would be
glad for the jobs we are fortunate to have, but that doesn't give
those who have the power to hire and fire the right to talk to us
like we are stupid and lack knowledge.
My grandfather always said, "Be careful whose butt you kick
on the way up; you never know whose butt you're going to
have to kiss on the way down."

Where have all the clerks gone?

It's appalling to visit the shops these days. There are no
clerks to help people. Men will just leave without finding their
size. Moms with.children will leave without assistance. We
need someone helping us to look at barbeque things and gar-
den things and help getting stuff off the top shelf.
People should help when we are trying clothes on.We don't
want to get all the way dressed and then go find another size.
You dan roam around big stores all day without anyone even
saying hello to you.

Hospital should clean up

While visiting a good friend at the hospital the other day, I
happened to look up'in time to see a waiter carrying a food
tray. I
That's correct, folks! And the waiter was well-dressed.
The hospital now offers food, any hour of any day, breakfast
in the evening; anything is possible, as long as it is OK'd by
your physician.
To make it even better, your food is now delivered (I don't
know if it is every time) by a very nicely-dressed server. Black
pants, long-sleeved white shirt, black vest, bow tie, carrying
your tray, as if in a restaurant.
Of course, there is always a but to every story, and this is no
exception.
My friend lost one of her earrings, and we were looking for
it.
I bent down to look under her bed, the visitor's chair, all
around and, lo and behold, wrappers from. bandages, tips
from syringes (hot the syringes but the tips), other miscella-
neous debris and plenty of dust.
My friend is in the hospital to get well and living in an
unclean environment.
Wouldn't you think it would be more sensible to forego the
well-dressed server and concentrate on a more efficient
housekeeping staff? Or, at least a large enough housekeeping
staff to keep up with the work?
I love the idea of everyone bragging on the current status of
the food served at the hospital.
I can't say the same about their health habits.

Where do I turn?

I got in a car accident back in January Now I have a cyst on
my ovary. I went to the hospital, and they sent me to another
doctor.
I can't get Medicaid because they say I'm not eligible. I went
back to the hospital, and they said they can't help me. There
are no free clinics these days.
What am I supposed to do?

A response tO teen rants

There were two rants in last week's paper that make me
want to tell those people to just shut up. It was in reference to
children and teens being out for the summer. One of the arti-
cles focused on people locking up their car doors. And the
other complained about teens getting jobs for the summer.
Get a grip! You more than likely are old with nothing more to
do then complain. My children are out for the summer and
they are very respectful children who I believe deserve a cou-
ple months break from school. They don't go around looking
for cars to break into. Most of these children will be playing
either at home at the beach or at some type of amusement
park.
Or in other cases, the teens will get a summer job so they
don't.end up like some of these adults out there, popping out

Don't be afraid of tests you need

ne reason people
don't get the medical
tests that they need
is because they're afraid of
the results.
That may sound silly, but
maybe you're someone
who has a "good" excuse
why you haven't gotten that
mammogram,
colonoscopy, PSA screening
for prostate cancer, pap
smear or cholesterol
testing.
Maybe the reason is time,
or the lack of it. Maybe the
reason is that you heard the
test could be painful.
Maybe you think disease is
something that happens to
other people.
Each year, as a breast
cancer survivor, I get
scanned to make sure I
remain cancer free. Each
year, it is a stressful time,
because once you've had
cancer, you worry that it
will come back. Some years
I think that I'll just forget
about it.
Thisyear, one of the tests
revealed some small nodes
under my left arm. My
oncologist, Nick lannotti,
wanted it checked out by
my surgeon, Jim Vopal.

I wasn't thrilled. This was
the first year I went through
"test time" without my
husband, Roy, to make a
cup of tea afterwards. If
anything were wrong, I'd
have to go through it
without him. The impulse
to make the whole thing go
away was strong.
I scheduled an appoint-
ment with Dr. Vopal. I knew
the drill as it had happened
before. He did an ultra-
sound and didn't like the
way one of the nodes
looked.
He did three needle
biopsies in the office,
removing fluid from the .
nodes. They would be sent
for testing to see if they
were just enlarged glands
or something more sinister.
Waiting for biopsy results
is something every cancer
patient hates. You have no
.control over the outcome
and you know that your life

How to 'read'

I've noticed this phe-
nomenon while
instructing new com-
puter users: A lost, "deer in
the headlights" look will
come over many new users
when asked to click an
object because they can't
find it.
Usually, I will hear "I
don't have that," a short
pause and then the
inevitable "Oh! Here it is!"
So, what's going on here?
Why are many new com-
puter users unable to find
objects, links, menus and
shortcuts that are present
on any given system, even
when the items in question
are right there on the
screen?
SThe answer is where
people's eyes tend to go
when a window opens.
Most of the time, the
users' eyes are hovering
around a 4-inch circle in
the center of the screen. If
they don't see what they
are looking for there, the
response is usually "I don't
have that."
Then (after realizing that
maybe they should have
whatever it is they can't
find), they will broaden the
search a bit, move their
eyes around and locate
what they were missing.

early and I'd have the best
chance possible to fight it.
I'd done it nine years ago
and I would do it again.
I got the news a few days
later. The great news was
that there was no breast
cancer. The bad news was
that they were unable to
label the node definitively.
Dr. Vopal suggested we
repeat the ultrasound in
two months and I agreed.
I have been down this
road before and I suspect
that it will turn out to be
inflammation, perhaps as
the result of having an
autoimmune disease.
I know that we have to

I am grateful that my
doctors care so much. I

Through this every year?
SYes, it is. But I'm awfully
glad I'm alive to go through
it. That way, I'm in control
of my health and it isn't in
control of me. You can do

the same thing for yourself.
This is a great opportuni-
ty for me to thank my
medical "posse," Dr.
lannotti, my oncologist, Dr.
Vopal, surgeon extraordi-
naire and Darrell Fiske, the
rheumatologist who keeps
me healthy in non-crisis
times.
I am so fortunate to have
all of you in my life and I
don't get to thank you often
enough.

TREASURE COAST The
Treasure Coast Food Bank,
an organization that works
to eliminate hunger and
reduce food waste in Indian
River, Martin, Okeechobee
and St. Lucie counties,
received a $7,500 donation
from the Wachovia Founda-

The donation will help
fund the food distribution
program to approximately
1!0 agencies in four coun-
ties on the Treasure Coast.
i"Some parts of the food

been hit very hard by sky-
rocketing unemployment
and foreclosure rates," said
John: Meehan, executive

ceries to 44,000 Treasure

"We are grateful to the
Wachovia Foundation for
giving us some additional

m.
nce again, our
Congress and Senate
have proven they are
out of touch with reality or,
perhaps more likely, simply
inclined to pass any
legislation that will get them
re-elected.
The cash for clunkers bill
passed the House and the
Senate and awaits President
Obama's signature. It is
supposed to be help energy
conservation, because it will
take higher gas mileage
vehicles off the road. It's also
supposed to help our
floundering economy,
because it will incentivize
owners of "clunkers" to buy
new cars.
When the driver of a
clunker, defined to be a
vehicle with relatively poor
gas mileage and worth up to
$4,500, trades it in, he gets a
voucher for either $3,500 or
$4,500. Then the dealer
must scrap that vehicle.
I Here's why our politicians
* are out of touch with reality
Our country is in the worst
economic condition since
the Great Depression. The
most severely affected are
those at the lower end ofthe
economic spectrum.
Arguably, even more
important than housing f
this class of people, is
transportation (you can
sleep inyour car). It's not
possible for many to get to
work without a.car. It's not
even possible for many to

ON CARS
EARL STEWART

look for workwithout car.
How about taking your
children to school or getting
to a doctor or hospital?
These are the people who
buy "clunkers" because they
don't have the credit to buy
anything more expensive.
Or maybe they can't get any
credit at all and can afford
only cars cheap enough to
afford to buy for cash.
If this legislation works
the way the politicians say
they want it to, it will
remove most clunkers from
the road and drive up the
prices of those few remain-
ing to make them unafford-
able to those that have no
other transportation option.
Of course, a lot of the .
economically challenged
are already driving clunkers.
The new law doesn't permit
them to use the $3,500 or
$4,500 voucher to buy a
iicer, more reliable used
car. They may only buy a
muchmore expensive new
car. Unfortunately, most
people with bad or no credit
who are forced to drive
clunkers won't be able to get
financed on a new car even
with the $3,500-$4,500
down payment.
Logic dictates that no one
wTould have his vehicle
scrapped for a $4,500
voucher ifwas worth more
than $4,500. Butwho is to
say what a clunker is really
worth? I can tell you from
my 40 plus years in the retail
auto business that you can
show a used car to five
different used car managers
and get five different

opinions as to what it's worth.
I advise consumers to shop
their trade-in to at least three
different car dealers before
they accept a trade-in
allowance from the dealer
they buy from. Typically, you
vill see a $2,000 to $5,000
difference between the three
professional opinions. I see
nothing in the legislation to
control this variable. 1 can

amount. How will you feel
knowing that you paid $4,500
of your tax dollars to scrap a,
car that had a market value
of $6,000?
To the extent that lower gas
mileage vehicles are taken off
the roads, this is good. But
energy conservation is not
our country's top priority
right now. We need to think
about cutting our 10 percent
plus unemployment in half.
Scrapping the only cars that
many of our unemployed
can afford to buy and driving
up the prices of those that
remain is not the right way to
go about this.
Car dealers love this
because the general lack of
understanding of this new
law will likely drive potential
buyers into their showrooms.

ou can argue this is good,
because it will stimulate new
car buying. But is it good to
stimulate the economy
through deception? I'm
already getting solicitations
from marketing companies
with all sorts of cute ideas
about how to exploit this
legislation. You can expect to
see an advertising media
blitz on "cash for clunkers."
I will end this column on a
positive note. One congress-
man who voted against this
legislation is Tom Rooney
from my district, District 16.
There are always a fewwho
vote their conscience and
not what will get them re-
elected. Unless we recognize
and vote for guys like Tom
Rooney, this endangered
species will vanish.

United States. Ten million
people fell victim last year.
Many discarded documents

your information from get-

Home shredders are time

MARTIN COUNTY -
Seacoast National Bank is
making home ownership
possible for a family of five
through a recent donation
to Habitat for Humanity
Martin County.
The bank recently donat-
ed a foreclosed Port Saler-
no property that included a
partially- completed home.
The four-bedroom, two-
bath residence will be
completed through Habi-
tat's "Building Homeown-
ership Together" program
and a crew of Seacoast vol-

unteers.
. "This donation has pro-
vided the bank with an
excellent opportunity to
assist Habitat for Humani-
ty with its mission of creat-
ing affordable housing,"
said Tom Wilkinson, Sea-
coast's Treasure Coast pres-
ident.
"We embrace the oppor-
tunity to help their mission
and we challenge other
financial institutions to
consider making similar
donations," he said.
The bank has partnered
with Habitat for Humanity
on numerous construction
projects to create afford-

able housing for low
income-borrowers
throughout the Treasure
Coast.
In addition to financial
support and in-kind dona-
tions, many Seacoast
employees volunteer their
time and talent to end
poverty housing and pro-
mote transformational and
sustainable community
development.
"Seacoast National
Bank's continued invest-
ment in our organization
and the families we serve is
greatly appreciated," said
Jody Clifford, director of
development.

Agency aims to help elderly

For Hometown News
News@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY The. Council on
Aging of Martin County is involved in a num-
ber of projects that will enable it to expand its
services to frail and at-risk elders.
The agency is now serving an average 250
meals a day, but the waiting list has grown to
nearly 50. It also provides more than two-
dozen services to more than 1,200 seniors, so
they can remain independent in their homes
for as long as possible, but that waiting list is
approaching 150.
In response to the growing need, the
agency is planning to open a community
meal site for seniors in Indiantown.
It costs more than $65,000 a year to institu-
tionalize someone, and $6,000 for the

agency's services to keep seniors in their own
homes and neighborhoods. Last year alone,
Martin County paid more than $250,000 in
Medicaid costs for nursing home care.
The agency is closing in on its $10 million
goal to build the states first LEED-certified,
"green" senior center complex on Salemo
Road, generating badly- needed construction
jobs.
The first step is to restore nearly 5-acres of
severely-degraded wetlands.
The center will be a resource and service
hub for the county. It will include a hurricane
shelter for seniors and their pets, along with
many other innovative programs to better
meet the needs of the growing elder popula-
tion.

Colorful, varied

fare served

at Stuart diner

By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN COUNTY A
wave of color at the bright
Stuart diner is the first of
many surprises.
Just off the busy Federal
Highway, a beach theme,
complete with surf boards,
fishing nets, sandals, bright-
ly-colored booths, outdoor
seating, menus designed
with marine themes and
pastel colors, all help create
the ambiance at one of the
city's newest hotspots.
There are also fresh fish
dishes, Greek specialties and
daily dinner specials by Chef
Keiner Picado at Key West
Diner, just north of the Roo-
sevelt Bridge.
Four months since it first
opened its doors, the 140-
seat eatery has drawn a loyal
following, who come for the
all-day breakfasts, but stay
for the culinary surprises.
Among the favorites is a
Caribbean-inspired grilled
snapper or mahi-mahi,
served with black beans, yel-
low rice, plantains and fresh
vegetables.
Owner George Tsiopelas,
born in the Greek Isles and
an avid fisherman, insists on
fresh, not frozen, fish for his

dishes.
"I'm spoiled," he confess-
es.
And it's a good thing for
restaurant patrons, as the
mahi-mahi on a recent
Wednesday evening was
light and flaky, served with a,
perfect blend of seasonings
and beautifully presented.
The restaurant serves all
seafood with soup or salad
and a choice of potato and
vegetable or pasta. Options
include salmon, conch and
shrimp.
Its "onshore" offerings are
equally formidable.
The New York strip steak,
for instance, served with
onions and peppers, was
succulent, thick and juicy.
Served with a side of broc-
coli, Chef Keiner added a
pleasant surprise: a touch of
garlic to the vegetables for
an interesting blend ofTla-.
vors.
Its kids' menu includes
cheese ravioli, Parmesan,
hotdogs, chicken tenders
with fries and two-egg
cheese omelets.
The Greek selections,
including souvlaki, mari-
nated pork presented on a
pita with lettuce, tomato,
tsataziki sauce, served with
fries or a Greek salad, are

Fifty-six golfers hit the
greens at Loblolly Pines Golf
Course on June 5 for the
fourth annual Golf for
Wildlife tournament to raise
funds for the Treasure Coast
Wildlife Center, a nonprofit
organization dedicated to
preserving wildlife and its
natural habitats, ..
The event netted more
than $27,500, most of which
will go toward building a
much-needed new facility'
for the wildlife center in
Palm City.
In 2004, the wildlife center
experienced one tornado,
three direct hits by hurri-
canes and a forced reloca-
tion, depleting its .financial
reserves.
Despite these hardships,
the center's dedication
never waned. The animals
in their charge receive:- the -
utmost care.., '
With the community's
continued support, the cen-
ter can create a facility with
space for the treatment of
wildlife patients, welcome

offices, food preparation
