HOW WEIRD

County health official provides

update on swine flu case

Spend any time surfing
the Web and you are
bound'to find stories
that are just too bizarre to
be true.
Here's a sampling, edited
for length. And remember;
just because it's online
doesn't mean it's true!
From Telegraph.co.uk
Web site:
Man on mission to visit
every Starbucks in the
world: A software engineer
from California, who goes
by only one name, is on a
mission to visit every single
Starbucks coffee shop on
the planet.
Winter, 37, has spent 12
years drinking coffee in
9,100 chain stores. He
estimates he has 3,000 left.
This week he arrived in
London to tackle 400 shops
in England, Scotland and
Wales, reported the Times.
However, he will have to
hurry, because the compa-
ny has started closing
premises.
In each Starbucks, Winter
drinks one cup of regular
brewed coffee. He takes a
photo and posts it on his
Web site, starbucksevery-
where.com.
He estimates he has spent
about $100,000 (63,000) in
the past 12 years. Once he
drank 29 coffees in one day.
"I felt awful," he said.
From
GopherCentral.com:
Chicago man buried in
Pabst beer can coffin: A
South Chicago Heights, Ill.,
nman who sa\y he-wanis his
death to reflect his life, has
purchased a casket
designed to look like a huge
can of his favorite beer.
Bill Bramanti, 67, said the
casket, for which he paid
$2,000 to have decorated

MARTIN COUNTY Martin
County Health officials confirmed
the first case of H1N1 or swine flu in
Martin County on May 29, with a
report of an infection of a 7-year-old
student at Pinewood Elementary,
said Renay Rouse, a department
spokesman.
Since then, two other cases have
emerged in as many schools.

No fatalities have been reported.
By press time, the first child infect-
ed had received treatment and
gained medical clearance t6 return
to school.
"It's in the community, so it's not
surprising that there are a low num-
ber of cases as we go through the
summer," said Mark Chittum, health
department administrator. "But we
don't expect to have anything signifi-
cant."
He called the H1N1 flu a "relatively

ST. LUCIE COUNTY- Sgt.
jeff Jackson hopes to hit the
bulls-eye when he competes
later this month in the Florida
Police and Fire Games.
"It's a less stressfulcompeti-
tion," said Sgt. Jackson, who is
with the corrections depart-
ment of the St. Lucie County
Sheriff's Office. He compared
it with the shotgun and hand-
gun competitions, in which
he'll also compete.
The 2009 games, which will
include participants from law
enforcement agencies and
fire departments throughout
the state, will be held
throughout the 'Treasure
Coast, from June 21 to June
27, with most of the events in
St. Lucie, Martin and Indian
River counties.
A fishing tournament in
Okeechobee County will be,
the first event.
Just about all the prepara-
tions for the event have been
completed, said Tom Colucci,
executive director of the Trea-

sure Coast Sports Commis-
sion.
As of last week, he said, they
were still looking for some
volunteers to help with regis-
tration and coordinating the
events.
It will be a big boon for the
local economy, he said, as
many of the law enforcement
officers and firefighters who
participate will stay in motels,
eat at restaurants and spend
money locally.
In what would normally be
low season for the hospitality
industry, some motels are
reada. filled up for that peri-
od of time, he said.
"It's what we need here in
the summer," Mr. Colucci
.said.
The games were previously
held on the Treasure Coast in
2003 and 2004.
Having the events in more
than one county worked out
well then, he said.
And participants enjoyed
coming to an area with less
congestion than larger metro
areas, Mr. Colucci said.

Propertytaxes down

nearly 10 percent

By Samantha Joseph

MARTIN COUNTY-
After unprecedented
increases in their property's
taxable values in recent
yeats, Martin County resi-
dents are likely to see a
reversal in the trend and a
drop in their tax bills.
Early estimates from the
Martin County Property
Appraiser's Officer's show a

near 10 percent drop in tax-.
able value, the property's
assessed value; minus
homestead and other
exemptions.
"This is significant," said
Laurel Kelly, the county's
property appraiser. "We
went from a period of
unprecedented increases to
a period of unprecedented
decreases."

this summer, law enforce-
ment officers want to
make sure boaters aren't
using too many chilled
alcoholic beverages as
they operate marine vehi-

part of an effort to
the county's 17,000-
registered boaters
as marine traffic

increases during the sum-
mer months.
"On the summer week-
ends, we have extra units
working overtime on the
sandbar area, which is a
big problem area for us...,"
said Sgt. Bruce Newbold,
who heads the Sheriff's
Office marine unit.
Popular recreation
spots,.such as near Sailfish
Point, inside the St. Lucie
Inlet, which draws crowds
at low tide, are especially
important tp monitor.
"We try to go and main-

tain order so people can
enjoy it," Sgt. Newbold
said.
Boaters and residents
use the sandbar for cook-
louts and picnics, so there's
alcohol use and some
underage drinking.
"We have to' patrol and
keep order in terms of ...
drunks," he said.

Charities help thousands save on filing tax returns

By Samantha Joseph
Joseph@hometownnewsol.com
MARTIN 'COUNTY -
Yasmin Guiermo says she
dreads tax season and is
happy to put it behind her.
Plodding through tax
returns to save on the
preparation fees is a bur-
den she wishes she could
avoid.
But without Internet
access at home, the
Indiantown resident does
not have access to a secure
connection to take advan-

tage of free electronic fil-
ing services offered online
through the Internal Rev-
enue Service's Web site.
"I read the instructions,
try to understand and
answer the best I can," she
said.
But what Ms. Guiermo
didn't know was that a free
service might have saved
her hours of anxiety, a call
to the IRS for clarification
and uncertainty about the
accuracy of her return.
Free assistance from two
local charities helped

thousands of Martin
County residents, who oth-
erwise might have had to
face the tax collector
alone.
"We do it because if they
had to pay someone, it
would be quite a drain on
their income," said John
Sebold, .communications
director for Martin Coun-
ty's AARP Tax Aide Pro-
gram.
AARP, a nonprofit for
members 50 and older, and
United Way of Martin
County filed more than

2,140 returns, finding
nearly $1.8 million in
refunds for area taxpayers.
AARP's tax program did
not limit assistance to its
target market. Instead of
only helping, seniors, the
group extended its services
to thousands of filers of all
ages.
Its volunteers set up at
several libraries, and by
the end of the tax season,
had helped filers claim
nearly $1.57 million in
refunds.
Local nonprofits offered

assistance to low- to mod-
erate-income residents,
who earn up to $42,000
annually for a family of
four.
"The nice part about the
program is it's really been a
community partnership,"
said Jim Vojcsik, United
Way's executive director.
"We work with county
commissioners, Martin
Volunteers, the IRS and the
AARP. Each year, we're able
to train and recruit more

year later, they spiked even
further, 20.85 percent county-

Check illegal aliens for illness

This is about all of the illegal aliens in school. When our
grandparents came to this country, they were checked for
diseases, such as tuberculosis. Illegals do bring diseases.
They should be checked before they are allowed into the
schools. That's the only way to stop all of the diseases in our
schools.

Questions about system

As our nation considers a health care system designed by
President Obama, it is appropriate to look at the efficiency
of other government agencies, such as the U.S. Copyright
Office, which has just acknowledged it has more than
500,000 applications awaiting processing and that th'e back-
log keeps getting longer all the time.
Patent applicants have paid special handling fees of $685
to expedite things, but the delays are 18 months and are
expected to get worse.
We can ask ourselves: how long will a government run
health care system require us to wait to see a doctor and
how long to have an operation?

Be aware of terrorism

Homeland security is supposed to be coordinated by
Washington, but it would be a massive mistake for us to feel
that we can depend on the so-called authorities who have
failed us on Katrina and have demonstrated that they can-
not shoot straight.
The grim reality is that the terrorist threat has not dimin-
ished and the next attack could be very much worse than
Sept. 11. Americans as individuals and as families should
prepare and pressure our local leaders to be proactive.

A thought...

Ik C-.,ii,-n is when your neighbor loses his job.
Depression is when you lose your job.
Recovery is when Obama loses his.

The ethanol discussion

Our federal government is making, and has been making,
every effort to force auto makers to produce more energy
efficient cars. And now we have a federal agency, the Envi-
ronmental Protection Agency, looking to require the
ethanol blend at our gas stations to increase from 10 to 15
percent that will decrease our miles per gallon even further.
Anyone checking their mpg will find that it has decreased
dramatically with just the 10 percent ethanol blend. And
you may have already found oUt the hard way that the
ethanol addition has been doing t small gas engines in lawn
mowers, weed whackers, jet skis, boat motors, etc.
Our tax dollars and our gas purchases are subsidizing the
ethanol industry, but they want more. We are paying more
for food today because so much corn that is used in so
many of our food products is being diverted to ethanol pro-
duction.
How much damage can you afford from the EPA? Our
economy is in shambles and we have a government agency
considering increasing the cost, and damage, to every gaso-
line purchasing taxpayer. The ethanol industry has a very
effective lobby. How do we get one? Any chance that any of
our elected officials will step in?

Stamp out weekly stamps

It is no surprise that our mail service is in the shape it
claims. We need only one, possibly two, stamps. If you will
quit pumping out the "stamp of the week" with retooling
and die costs, wouldn't that save a lot of money?

Republicans are sick

To the person who wrote "Get rid of Democrats:" (you)
must have amnesia because most of what (that person)
wrote happened during the last (presidential) administra-
tion. What is wrong with these Republicans? That got poi-
soned against the new administration. They're sick.

Making an exercise

L ast week I discussed
the components of a
well-structured
exercise program mixing
aerobics or cardiovascular
activity, strength training,
core stability, flexibility
and balance.
This week I'll give some
practical idea for working
the elements into your life.
As always, talk to your
doctor before beginning
any exercise program,
especially if you have
medical problems that
may make some types of
exercises difficult or not
advisable for you.
Much of the information
for this program comes
from a special report on
exercise that accompanied
the Mayo Clinic Health
Letter for February 2009.
Monday: Begin your
program with 10 minutes
of balance exercises. When
you begin balance train-
ing, hold onto a chair or
tabletop to catch yourself
or do it with someone else
present. A good balance
exercise is to alternate
standing on one leg at a
time, trying to hold it for
several seconds in front of

you and behind you. Be
sure to hold on with the
other hand in the begin-
ning. .
Next, spend 30-40
minutes doing a brisk
walk. A brisk pace means
that you can still speak but
you're breathing faster.
Finally, stretch after
walking for 10 minutes to
increase flexibility.
STuesday: The recom-
mendation is for 30
minute of strength train-
ing for the upper body and
core stability exercises.
Some exercises, such as
push-ups and using light
weights, you may know. It
is a good idea to invest in a
session with a trainer to
learn the best exercises for
your needs. Then stretch.
for several minutes, after
your workout.

and general wellness, take

Net books are a novel idea

It always amazes me
how fast computers
evolve.
I can remember quite
clearly how things were ii
the 1990s, the hardware
we had to work with, how
expensive things were and
(since we didn't have
anything to compare it to)
we liked it.
I remember buying my
first 1-gigabyte hard drive
for about $300, and having
to figure out in my head
that 1,024 megabytes was
actually 1 gigabyte. I
remember thinking, "I'll
never use that much
space."
Well, it's 2009 already,
halfway through, no less.
The y2k crisis is a distant
memory and the hardware
we have to work with
today (stuff that we take
for granted) could be right'
out of the science fiction
from the 80s and 90s.
Two-gigabyte USB
thumb drives are com-
monly found in supermar-
kets for $10 to $20 and that
amazes me. Supermarkets!
And let me say a few
words about Google. It is
true the general populace
really takes for granted the
technology we have at our
fingertips today and
Google is a perfect exam-
ple.
To illustrate, I use the
example of ancient
cultures.
Way back when, in *

COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY

6--i
ancient times, they had
"oracles'" they would go to
for answers. These were
specially picked people
who would hide behind a
rock and people would
walk for miles through
snow, uphill, both ways, to
ask them a question.
Andwhatever the
answer was, that was that.
Right or wrong, they
would take the answer
they got from the oracle
back to their village and
that answer would affect
the lives of everyone.
Fast-forward to the
present and walk into
most households, and you
will likely find one (or
.more) computers hooked
up to the Internet and
Google is just few key-
strokes away.
Like the ancient oracles
of old, Google is there to
answer your questions.
Ask it anything. Not just
computer questions but
anything.
Go ahead, give it a try.
If you want to find out
how many times an
African swallow beats its
wings, just ask. I typed in
"how many times does an
African swallow beat its

wings?" and Google
returned more
thanl50,000 answers.
Now, keep in mind that
just because these are the
answers Google returned,
that doesn't mean they are
correct and accurate, but
now I know 150,000 times
more about the question
than I did before I asked
Google. And I didn't have
to walk umpteen miles
barefoot, in the snow to
ask the question.
And people take this for
granted. It doesn't even
cross most people's minds
to even ask Google when
they have a question.
Sure, it's available, but
there are not a lot of
people out there who
grasp all the things behind
the scenes that have to
work just right in order for
things such as Google to
work. It's just there and
when people remember
they use it.
Another modern marvel
that simply amazes me are
the "net books" we are
starting to see more and
more of.
Net books are little
laptops that are a fraction
of the size of regular
laptops and what makes
them amazing to me is the
price.
It's not that I'm amazed
they can make a full-
blown computer'as small
as they do, it's that they "
are selling for about $298

and you don't even have to
look hard to find one.
Sure, small notebooks
have been around for a
long time, but the rule of
thumb has been the
smaller it is, the more
expensive it is.
With these new net
books, it seems like that
trend is reversing. I
recently was fortunate
enough to pick up an
Aspire One.
It's a net book with 1-gig
of ram and a 130 gigabyte
hard drive and it runs
Windows XP..
It's got a built-in Web
cam and wireless access.
About the only thing it's
missing is a CD or DVD
drive but that's OK, I use
the drive on another
machine on my home
network when I need to
install software or b u r n
disk, so that's really not;
problem.
I used to wheel my
laptop around in one of
those laptop bags with
wheels, but now my net
book is so small it fits in ::
little bag. I love it. It's
cheap, easy to carry and
now I can have Google
anywhere I can pick up :;
signal.
I'm sure the ancients
would be jealous.

Minimizing the pain of

having your car serviced

Editor's note: This article
originally appeared on
March 23,2007.
The pain of buying a
used or new car may
be greater than the
paifiijf having it serviced,
but you need to have it
serviced far more often than
you have to buy a car.
Below, I am listing eight
suggestions to make your
visit tB your car dealer's
service department as
pleaslnt as possible.
Choose the dealer with
the best service depart-
merlliRemember, you don't
have to have the same
dealership service your car
that sold you your car. You
prolibly bought your car
from the dealer who gave
you the best price. You
should have your car
serviced at the dealer who
can best maintain and
repair your car.
The price of service is
important, but secondary to
the quality of the service
and repairs. Do a little
research. Ask friends and
nejgabors who drive your
make of car. Check with the
BBB and the county office
of consumer affairs. Ask the
service manager at the
dealership to show you his
factory score on customer
satisfaction index. Every
manufacturer surveys
dealers' service customers'
and ranks that dealer by
how well he treats his
customers.
' *Establish a personal
relationship with your
service advisor. The person
in theservice drive who
writes up your repair order
is verg important. Be sure
you get a good one. He .
should be knowledgeable,
atte ive to your needs,
promptly return phone
calls, and recommend only
necessary services. You
migh not find this person
on yor first visit, but if you
aren't comfortable with the
person you are dealing with,

ON CARS i
EARL STEWART I

ask for one with whom you
are. When you make an
appointment to have your
car serviced, always ask for
that service advisor.
Don't pay the "gotcha"
miscellaneous supplies fee.
Almost all car dealers tack
on a phony fee when you
pay your bill, which is
simply more profit to the
dealer, but is disguised by
vari us labels. It is also
sometimes called "environ-
mental impact fee," "sundry
shop supplies" and many
others.
The cashier just adds a
percentage, ranging from 5
percent to 10 percent to.
your bill. This is no different
than the 'dealer fee" that
the sales department tacked
onto the price they quoted
you on the price of the car.
Most dealers will waive this
fee if you complain about it,
especially if you threaten to
call the BBB, their manufac-
turer, or the Florida Attor-
ney General's office.
Always road test your
car, preferably with the
technician. If you brought
your car in for a drivability
problem, such as a noise,
vibration or pulling to the
right or left, don't accept the
car back until you ride in
the car with the technician
or service advisor and
confirm the problem has
been remedied.
I also recommend that
you drive the car with the
service advisor to demon-
strate the problem wheri
you bring it in. Experiencing
what you experience always
communicates your
problem more accurately
than listening to your
description of the problem.
*Ask for written
estimate of the total cost of

repairs and maintenance.
Florida law requires the ,
dealer give you a written
Estimate. Bylaw, they may
not exceed this by more
than 10 percent.
Make an appointment
ahead of time. You should
insist on making an
appointment and you
should try to make that
appointment at a time
when the dealer's service
department will be least
busy, typically the middle of
the afternoon on weekdays
or Saturday and Sunday.
Avoid the 7:30-8:00 morning
rush.

Footloose' a
high-energy pleasure.

Community theater has
had. a rough time this year.
The economy means fewer
people are available to vol-,
unteer and perform and
people are watching where
their money goes.
Shiloh Theatrical Produc-
tions' last show of the sea-
son, "Footloose," was reason
for hope. The high-energy
show, about a town that
doesn't allow dancing, fea-
tured some wonderful danc-
ing, choreographed by Beth
McKenzie-Shestak.
The play is about the kids
-and they stole the show.
Deserving a special mention
are Matt Siregar as Ren; Bri-
anna Scully as Ariel; Xander
Tsunoda as Willard; and Jen-
nell Stalka as Rusty.
The adults did their part,
too.
Sharon Owens was her
usual professional self as Vi
Moore, but Travis Eaton was
a revelation as the Rev. Shaw
Moore. We're accustomed toi
seeing him in comic roles
and he brought passion and.
sensitivity to a role that can
become cartoonish. More
than one person in the audi-
ence had a tear, as he sang
about his son, killed in a car
accident.

derful job as director and we

event at the First United
SMethodist Church of Hobe
Sound. This year's show, the
fourth, runs from June 25-

The event began because
Port St. Lucie resident Ruby
Lynn Baker didn't like wait-
ing until the last minute to
honor the country's heroes.
She and some others
named the weekend before

Independence Day Free-

to stage a musical tribute to
everyone who wears a uni-
form, including veterans,
service members, firefight-
ers and police officers. Ms.
Baker is again directing the
show.
"The shows a loving trib-
ute to our veterans and
those currently serving on
active duty," she said. "We

themselves in danger on. a
daily basis,
"The celebration experi-

ence is an enthusiastic and
joyful opportunity for patri-

It is our patriotic gift to the
community," Ms. Baker
.said.
The show includes per-
formers from throughout
the Treasure Coast, includ-
ing Sandi and Lauren Hell-
strom, Frank Lillo, Jayrene
Mack, Harry Neyhart, Dick
Grady and Beth Mankin.
As always, there will be
show tunes, dance, comedy
routines, audience partici-
pation and a few surprises.
Everyone involved in the
production is a volunteer.

Tickets are only $10, to

Megan Moran, who Trea-

performed in everything
from "Cinderella" to "Com-

versity of Miami last fall to
study the theater. She's
back in town for the sum-

about her first year away
from home.
"It was great," she said.
"It was very intense and
exactly what I wanted. It
was all theater, dance and
music classes, pretty much.
8 a.m.-5 p.m. every day.
"I ended up in a show,
and usually freshmen are
not allowed to audition. A
Broadway director came
down to do a workshop and
he needed extra people, so
we auditioned. My friend
got sick and I took her role
and worked with a Broad-
way director."
Her program has only 16'
students and there's a lot of
individual attention, she
said.
'This summer, she hopes

to share some of what she's
learned with students on
the treasure Coast.
"I'd like to do a peer-to-
peer theater camp at the
new St. Lucie Civic Center,"
she said. "It would be for
ages 13-16. I wanted to
have a camp with kids
interested in becoming
involved in the theater, kids
who want to learn to per-
form a monologue, work
with others in a scene,
learn basic principles of
the theater and of being
comfortable in front to
people."
The camp would run
from June 22-July 2, with a
performance on July 2 of a
one-act play and a mono-
logue by each student. Ms.
Moran's father, Ken, who
teaches fencing at the Civic
Center and who has direct-

work with her. Prospective
students can call Ms.
Moranl at (772) 619-3101 for
fees and other information.
She will also participate
in the StarStruck anniver-
sary show and is excited
about that, as well.
"I'm so excited to see
everyone and sing, our

"It's great to be with the'old

feeling nothing can slow you
down or stop you from victory
over life. Your large reservoir of
love, patience and under-
standing is icing on the cake. A
sweet life is on the way.
Libra Sept 23-Oct. 22
Live life like there is no tomor-
row. True, you have to plan for
tomorrow, but stay focused on
doing what you love today.

ness. Your passion for life is
another of your special gifts. If
your heart isn't in it, don't do it
Life is going your way. Nothing
can stop you now.
Scorpio Oct 23-Nov. 21
Keep striving'for spiritual bal-
ance. Stay active and keep
moving. Focus on fun things
and laugh a lot. If it doesn't
bring joy, don't do it. Resist act-
ing until you feel inspiration.
Then bring your visions into
realities. When you live this
way you honor the ancient
universal law of be fruitful and
multiply.
Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec.21
Courage in the face of adversi-
ty is one of your greatest
virtues. When the chips are
down, you keep an eye on the
goal and keep on keeping on.

You make a good captain of
the ship. You always bring it
safely through the storm. Be
sure to take a break after
meeting great challenges. This
recharge time gives you the
vision and energy for the next
journey.
.Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19
When you choose to let your
higher nature and purpose
guide you, you find patience
and wiser decisions are made.
The lower nature ruled by the
ego wants it all now. Separate
positive ideas from the nega-
tives and work on the most
important positives first. Your
inner guidance will tell you
when to act. This is a winning
formula.
Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Strong attention to details con-

tinues to bring positive results
to your life. Another reason is
the good heartedness and
nurturing you give others. Life,
adventure and nature are your
true domains. You calculate
the odds and then take action.
These three virtues separate
you from the masses and
make you a champion in all
you try.
Pisces Feb. 19-March 20
Pisces is the omega of the
zodiac family. Your strong, sen-
sitive inner nature and guid-
ance is the fuel for your spirit
You refuse to let the world or
negative people pull you too
far away from your center. Give
thanks daily for this greatest of
universal "blessings. It is the
light and power to keep you
going no matter what chal-
lenge is facing you.

spend hours trying to win
enough tickets to trade for a

or other prizes. Ocean Walk
Village also has a large
supervised area that is dedi-

and entertainment for kids.
Dad might want to drop
mom and the kids.off at the
Ocean Walk Village in the
morning, go play 18 holes of
golf at one of the many qual-

and then return to join the
family for lunch and some
afternoon family fun. Or he
might just want to join mom

beach or a stroll through the
many souvenir and gift
