County's first case
of HINI flu reported
Martin County's first case
of swine flu, or the H1N1
flu, has been confirmed by
the county health depart-
ment, a press release said.
It involves a 7-year-old
student at Pinewood Ele-
mentary School in Stuart.
School closure was not
recommended at this time,
the release said, but parents
are being asked to watch for
flu symptoms, such as
cough and fever, and stress
the importance of good
hygiene.
The health department
did not release any further
information, including con-
firming the student's identi-
ty.

Annual tournament
benefits artificial reef

The Martin County Artifi-
cial Reef Fund Committee
will host the third' annual
Reef Builders fishing tour-
nament on July 11. This
tournament helps fund the
artificial reef program in
Martin County.
With the focus on creat-
ing fish habitat, the'tourna'-
ment targets the species
that these reefs are created-
to attract.
This year, the tournament
will. award first-, second-
and third-place cash prizes
for the top cobia, dolphin,
grolper, snapper and king-
fish caught.
Anglers will be required to
log the location and time
each fish is caught. This
information helps provide
much-needed data for the
reef builders.
Over the past year, Martin
County has deployed six
new south county reefs, and
four steel towers, which
were donated by Harbor
Branch Oceanographic
Institute in Fort Pierce.
Additional deployments
are planned this summer.
The Martin County Artifi-
cial Reef Fund.is a nonprof-
it, established to enhance
the artificial reef program of
Martin County.

Bulldgs are top dogs on the diamond

South Fork High School wins first state baseball title

By Sarah Stover Jacos
News@hometownnewsol.com
STUART After losing
the state baseball finals last
year, the South Fork Bull-
dogs were back with tenaci-
ty to come out on top this
year.
The Stuart high school's
varsity baseball team won
the championship with a
13-3 win against Tallahas'
see's Lawton ChilesTimber-
wolves last week. To make
Sthe victory even sweeter, it:
was near their home turf.
This year's finals were held
for the first time in state his
tory at Tradition Field in

Port St. Lucie.
The game brought the
Bulldog's successful 29-3
season to a close, and the
win brought the first cham-
pionship title in any sport
to the school.
"It's so great to bring
South Fork its first champi-
onship. It's something the
whole school can take pride
in, and the community,"
said head Coach Mike
Harper.
:. He partially credits .a
desire from last year's close
loss for the drive to this
year's finals.
SDespite losing to the
Dunedin- Falcons, 2-3 last

year, the -Bulldogs still
walked away with the best
season, 27-6, in South
lork's history. The team also
took the District 14-5A and
Region 4-5A titles. However,
the team, as well as Coach
Harper, wanted more.
"Last year, when we lost,
it was so close. We had five
to six kids coming back that
got to play a lot last year. We
left it unfinished. We let it
go. Theywanted to get there
as bad as I did," he said.
Their drive to succeed
showed this year, especially
in the games leading up to
the championship.
Senior catcher Ryan

Breen hit two home runs to
help his team in its 10-0 tri-
umph over the Satellite
Scorpions in one of the
Region 4-5A quarterfinals.
In fact, the game was over
after three innings due to
enactment of the mercy
rule, which meant the Bull-
dogs were so far ahead, it
was unforeseeable that the.
other team could catch up.
,The Bulldogs continued
their winning streak with a
17-0 victory against the Gulf
Coast Sharks from Naples,
in a best-of-three series that
was part of the regional

Second annual HT Nyard sale planned

Event will benefit
Molly's House
By Kara Lowe
Special to Hometown News
Tired of clutter? Then turn unwant-
ed stuff into cash while supporting a
good cause.
The second annual Hometown News
community yard sale, ,benefiting
Molly's House, will be held July 11 from
8 a.m.-noon at Hometown News head-
quarters in Fort Pierce.
The sale supports Molly's House, a
local organization that provides tem-
porary housing for patients and fami-
lies receiving medical care on the Trea-
sure Coast.
Start planning now to get rid of
unwanted gifts accumulated through-
out the years, while supporting a wor-
thy organization. ,

For a $35 tax-deductible fee, individ-
uals, businesses and vendors receive a
10-foot by 10-foot booth to display
items at the event.
"If people take a booth for $35, then
anything they take in is theirs to keep,"
said Louise Murtaugh, executive direc-
tor of Molly's House. Ms. Murtaugh
encourages the community to take
advantage of the yard sale as opposed
to holding individual garage sales
because, "collectively, it will draw a
larger crowd so there will be more peo-
ple and more opportunity to sell their
items."
Additionally, Hometown News is
sponsoring a raffle featuring items
donated by local businesses and com-
munity members.
So far, raffle items have been donat-
ed by Wal-Mart, St. Lucie Battery &
Tire, Heathcote Botanical Gardens,
Savanna Club Golf Course, WadaWash
car wash, McKee Botanical Gardens, A

Day of Delight Spa and more.
All money raised from booth space
sales and Hometown News-sponsored
raffle will benefit Molly's House.
"Last year's event raised $1,000, so
we hope we can raise at least that
much and more this year," Ms.
Murtagh said.
As an added incentive for businesses
to participate, 'Hometown News will
recognize them in newspaper adver-
tisements for the event, as well as in
any radio spots produced for the
event.
Those who can't participate are
encouraged to donate anything from
gift cards to store items.
Limited space is available and will
be provided on a first-come, first-serve
basis. No reservations will be accepted
after June 29.
To reserve a space, make a donation
or for more information, call (772) 465-

'TREASURE COAST
Trains and' railways were at
the heart of the birth of
many cities along the Trea-
sure Coast, and some
believe they could rejuve-
nate the cities once again.
The Treasure Coast
Regional Planning Council,
based in Stuart, is asking
relevant entities, including
private and government
organizations to write a res-
olution to Gov. Charlie Crist
asking him to prioritize an
intercity rail project as part
of the federal economic
stimulus package for the
state.
The resolutions are also
being sent to state Trans-
portation Secretary
Stephanie Kopelousos in
hope the project will see the
light of day.
The project, known as the
intercity rail component of
the FEC corridor project
from Jacksonville to Miami,
is in competition with other
transportation projects,
including a rail project in
Central Florida going from
DeLand through downtown
Orlando to Poinciana.

Eleven hundred and nine-

in grades six through 12

The Florida Youth and
Substance Abuse survey
also sought to measure the
risk factors contributing to
substance, abuse and the
protective features that dis-
couraged it. Hundreds of
middle and high schoolers
completed a questionnaire
with ip to 211 questions.
When officials adminis-
tered the survey in 2000,
nearly 44 percent of stu-
dents said they'd useq alco-
hol in the past month. By
2008, that number had
dropped to less than 38 per-
cent.
About 27 percent of the
,original respondents said
they were; binge drinkers,
consuming five or more
drinks in a row in the two
weeks preceding the survey.
By last year, that number
had dropped to just under
19 percent.
The use of inhalants was
also down by about half,
with less than 3 percent of'
students reporting its use.
"I wish it was zero, but I
guess that's not realistic,"

,said Ms. lIuffery, who said
she has ,qot had specific
conversations with her chil-
dren, ages.10 and 12, about
avoiding narcotics or alco-
hol. "But it makes me feel
better that the numbers are
going down."
But not all the numbers
are low.
SWhen it comes to com-
bining drugs. Martin Coun-
ty students surpass their
counterparts across .the
state, according to the sur-
vey.
Many more had smoked,
too, in the month before the
survey, with about 15 per-
cent ,. of local children
reporting they'd had ciga-
rettes, compared to about 9
percent statewide. Marijua-
na use was also higher
locally at nearly 20 percent,
compared to about 11 per-
cent for the state.
"We still have a long way
to go in some cases," Ms.
Hosang said. ,
There's room for improve-
ment, for instance, in pro-
viding positive social out-
lets for middle-school
students, the survey shows.'
The county lagged behind
the state and nation when it
came to community, family,
school and peer networks
for children in that age
group.

finals.
They met their goal with a
5-2 win over the Henry B.
Plant Panthers during a Class
5A state semi-final game on
May 25.
Junior Blake Nehls had two
hits that.helped his team to
its victory. Coach Harper was
impressed Blake held his own
against the Tampa school's
pitcher, Mychal Givens, who
has been acknowledged as
one of .the nation's top
prospects and won the Jackie
Robinson award last year.
"I said you beat him. That
has to feel good," said Coach
Harper of his dugout chat
with Blake.
Winning the champi-
onship definitely felt good.
"It meant a lot. We had a
goal all year to get back there
and we did," said Blake.
"It's a great feeling. It's
undescribable," said senior
Nick Zaharian, who will play
ball for St. Petersburg College
next year.
;"It means everything to
me. It's even better (than it

would be) because we lost
last year," said senior pitcher
Kyle Hunter, who has signed
to play for Dartmouth next
year.
CoachHarper credited the
whole team with making the
championship win possible
this year.
"Through the season, it
seemed like there was a dif-
ferent hero every night. They
all played so well," he said.
The Bulldogs especially
played well after a pep talk
from their coach during the
final game. It came after the
Timberwolves took a 3-0 lead
in the first inning.
"We made an error that
gave them two runs in the
first inning, which is kind of
characteristic ofus. However,
I told-them to chip away and
get back in the lead. After
that, it was lights out," said
Coach Harper.
The team got strong hitting
from Brandon Bednar, Nick
Guillotte and Blake Nehls, as
well as good pitching from
Kyle.
He allowed, only two sin-
gles after the first inning and
struck out fire of the Timber-
wolves over five innings, the

Florida High School Athletic
Association's stat sheets
showed.
It helped that the team was
close to home, with a big fan
base cheering them on.
There were at least an esti-
mated 1,800 people at the
South Fork championship
game, said John Messina,
athletic director of St. Lucie
West Centennial High
School, which hosted the,
finals.
If not for the rain, it proba-
bly would have been closer to
3,000, he said.
Mr. Messina was one of the
major forces in bringing the
finals to Tradition Field,
where the New York Mets
train, from Sarasota, where
the games were previously
held. He credits the help of
the Mets, Tommy Bowes and
the "phenomenal" grounds
crew with pulling off the
event..
"I had 50 e-mails from peo-
ple all over the state who said
this was the best tournament
they'd ever. been to, and that's
the greatest compliment to
all the volunteers who
helped,"'said MtfMessina.
.Next year's finals will also

Mitch Kloorfain

be held at Tradition Field,
and there is an option to keep
them there for the following
two years, which Mr. Messi-
na, Tom Colucci of the Trea-
sure Coast Sports Commis-
sion, the St. Lucie County
Recreation Department and
New York Mets will try to do,
he said.
"I just can't wait 'til next
year because we're going to
do it even better," said Mr.
Messina.
Although hes losing six to
seven seniors, Coach Harper
said, there are still four or five-
strong kids to build around.
The goal is to get to the play-
offs and see what happens
from there.
But for now, he and the
team are enjoying the spoils
of victory. They attended a
banquet at the school on May
28, and the following night,
were announced at half-time
of a spring football game,
where Coach Harper held up
the trophy for the crowd to
see.
"I'm on cloud nine. I'm
glad we got it. Last year we
knocked on the door. This
year we kicked it in," he said.

draining natural resources.
For' instance, on a recent
Tuesday, he was working with
a local client to make changes
to a waterfront condomini-
um to limit its electricity and
water usage, plus protect it
against rust and deterioration
from rain, wind and salt air.
A device in the faucets adds

air and limits the flow of
water, slashing water bills,
while a weather strip around
doors seals inair, preventing
a drain on the home's cooling
unit and electricity.
"We can make lots of
changes," he said. "I really
feel it's necessary to re-edu-
cate people on the reasons
for going green. The timing is
perfect."
The county's undertaking
sends an impressive message
about its progressive envi-
ronmental strategies, said Mr.
Milu, who heads Stuart-
based consulting company,
Malakoo.
Over the next month,
county employees plan to
meet to continue to compile
the application for the Flori-
da Green Building Coalition.
The process has included
workers from. all depart-
ments, and once the applica-

tion is submitted, it's likely to
take another year before the
coalition makes a decision.
During that time, the group
will provide feedback and
allow time for improvement
of changes to portions of the
application, if necessary.
The venture has cost about
$4,500, but supporters say
the return would be priceless.
Not only would it show that
the county is protecting its
long-term interest, it would
also gain it listings in the
group's directories and net-
works.
"We're hoping through this
process to be able to come
out of it with a strong show-
ing. That's our goal and the
benefit," Mr. Markey said. "If
we're expecting the public to
respond to this, we certainly
should be practicing it our-
selves."

Use genealogy to keep

your mind sharp

I haven't written a column
in a while due to writer's
block, and drifting away
from my genealogy due to
life in general.
However, as I've always
said, when the genealogy
bug bites, it is always just
under the skin and it only.,
takes one little incident to
bring it back full force. In
this case, it was a simple
needle prick.
This came to pass just
-recently in a most unex-
pected way. In fact, I didn't
believe it myself until it was
confirmed by others.
I had finally made an
appointment to have some
long-needed outpatient
surgery. The day came, and
of course, genealogy was
the last thing on my mind.
As I lay on the surgery
table, I was patted and

reassured by the nice
nurses that everything
'would be fine. I would only
be asleep for a few minutes,
and when I woke up,
everything would be over.
Then the nurse slipped the
needle into my arm (almost
painlessly).
A few minutes later, I was
instantly wide-awake.
There were two nurses
standing above my head,
just out of sight, having a'
conversation. It concerned
the sister of one grand-

GOLD
Part of the jewelry business,
of course, is the use of gold.
But in today's market the
use of gold is different. We
once used a customer's
gold for their keepsake
pieces, for example, using
their Father's wedding band
for the new husband's wed-
ding band. Now of course,
we are buying gold, not just
for use in your custom
pieces, but just as'a means
of recouping money.' The
state' of Florida requires a
lot of. paperwork that has to
be processed when buying
precious metals, so it is
Very important to be aware
ofstate.laws governing this;,
When buying gold from the
public we are required to
hold the jewelry we buy for
two weeks we do pay for the
scrap when it is sold to us.
We offer an additional per-
cent more for your money if
you apply the amount as. a

are somewhat insulted that
we ask for photo ID and fin-

we are only following the

Kudos to the computer guy

I'm a relatively new reader of Hometown News online and
I just wanted to let you know just how informative and
helpful Sean McCarthy's "Compute This" column has been
to me. He is a real asset to your endeavors. He's a keeper.
Thanks.

What about a head tax?

I have a suggestion about school cutbacks and a way to
put a lot of money in the school coffers to keep teachers,
etc. Has anyone ever proposed a head tax?
That means, when you have a child in school, you pay this
tax. It wouldn't amount to a lot of money and wouldn't be a
burden to those who don't pay anything now, and it would
give some of us relief from having to foot the bill for those
children whose parents pay nothing.
This would apply to renters and others whose children
are being educated at the expense of those who pay school
taxes.
I have heard this works in other states and sounds like a
good idea, even if it takes putting to a referendum. We have
never complained about paying school taxes; as we have
three children arid three grandchildren who have graduated
from local schools, and we paid their way.
Wouldn't it be a good idea for the school board to investi-
gate this possibility? Does anyone think they will?

More on Medicaid

This is in response to the rant about putting pictures on
Medicaid cards. This person is formally from New York, is
.making fun of our state. What I want to know is, are they
down here draining our state, or.do they have a job?

We should be outraged

Where is the outragefrom law-abiding citizens when
inroceni people are assaulted,. raped and murdered; by
amid. i-d id ,j -or2 _I .i. people who have in right to be living
among us, but have been treated with kid gloves by tolerant
judges egged on by deceitful lawyers who benefit from our
lenient legal system?
The national recidivism rate is approaching 50 percent,
which means that we can be certain many more crimes will
be committed by predators to whom the system gives egre-
gious releases.

Obama calls for more money

In a rare sign of candor, President Obama has admitted
he will need $58 billion in additional taxes to offset what he
calls "budgeting errors" that overstated revenues in his plan'
to finance the overhaul of the nation's health care system.
This admissionhas not gotten a lot of attention, but it has
most serious implications for all of us who will be paying
higher and higher taxes for a program with questionable
benefits.
SThe Obama plan for government-run health care has the
following characteristics. Besides raising your taxes, do you
really want a program with the efficiency of the Post Office
and the compassion of the IRS?

Meaning of Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day weekend, we:seem to, as in years
past, celebrate mattress sales and great deals at some store.
.I find it a shame that we have thought of this date as "when
summer begins" and little else.
I'm not saying we should humble ourselves in grief, but to
celebrate what they have died for. Those who have served,
and are serving are our best.
Those who feel it is just a chance to wolf down a burger
and a beer are. out of my loop.

Remember your promises

As a candidate for the presidency, Barack Obama said
that his administration would avoid earmarks and live
within a strict budget.
He must have forgotten his pledge. He has signed several
pieces of legislation with unnecessary and expensive pork. -

Columnist takes on new assignment

he Internet has been
around for a long
time now, long
enough for it to have
become a fixture in
modern life.
I've been surfing the
Web for more than 12
years, and if there is one
thing I've learned, it's that
the Internet is loaded
chock full of weird stuff.
I've seen things that
have made me laugh out
loud and things that have
made me wince with
embarrassment for the
other guy.
There.are strange news
stories, Photoshopped
, images that lare go-.eli
S'-done it's hard to tellthey
are fake (no matter how
closely you look at the
pixels) and people. People
with stories so weird, they
won't even let them on
Jerry Springer.
In the years that I've;
spent surfing the Web, I've
developed finding weird-
ness online into sort of an
art form.
You see, a lot of what I
do (fixing computers) has
me waiting for an hour-
glass to go away or waiting
for a progress bar to
finish.
During that time, find
myself often loading up
sites such as Fark.com,
Digg.com, Reddit.com, or,
even 4chan.com, to pass
the time and there is no

COMPUTE
THIS

end to the amount of.
strange stuff there. And
that's not to mention all
the stuff that gets forward-
ed to me.
Have you ever opened
your e-mail and found
that someone has'for-
warded you a story or a
picture so bizarre that it
had to be fake?
Spend any time online,
and you can't help'but
J stumble upon itefscathat
are truly off the wall and
hard to believe.
When I find something
that makes me laugh out
loud, I often save it. And
that can happen to me on
a daily basis.
Sometimes, I open my
e-mail and have a half
dozen messages waiting
for me to wade through
that have been forwarded
along dozens of times
-before they get to me and
frankly, if it wasn't for
snopes.com, I would be
hard pressed to distin-
guish the real stories from
the fake ones.
You see, one thing that
some people need to learn
about the Internet is that
"just because you read it

online, that does not
mean it's true."
In fact, I cannot stress
that enough. Sincerity is
no guarantee for truth;
sometimes the biggest
hoaxes online are the ones
written with the most
sincerity, so you have to
be real careful and take
everything you find with a
grain of salt.
A good resource for
verifying something is
www.snopes.com. Getting
into the habit of checking
things out on Snopes :.
could save people a lot of
embarrassment if only
they would remember.
So, why am I bringing
up.all of this weirdness in,
my computer column?
Well, a short time ago
the powers that be here at
Hometown News came up.
with the idea that we put -
together a "news of the
weird" column populated
with interesting and
bizarre stuff found online.
Now, I don't know if I
should be insulted or
flattered, but.apparently,
as soon as the word
"weird" was uttered,
everN one thought of me.
So I got a call from my
editor, Tammy, and she
asked if.that was some-
thing I thought I would be
interested in doing and of
course I said yes! I mean
how could I possibly turn
down the offer to do

another column?
OK, so what this all
means is that in addition
to writing this weekly
computer column, I will
also be contributing
"weird" articles and
tidbits that I find online.
I will adhere to copy-
right laws and give credit
to the source and include
the disclaimer that "just
because you read it does
not make it true."
SI will even open my e-
mail to reader submitted
stuff.
Got a weird story? Send
it to WeirdStories@Com-
puteThisOnline.com (with
no hyphens) and I'll look
, it over and possibly use it.
That only leaves the
question of what to call
my new column. After
careful consideration I
think I've decided on
"How weird is that?!?"
(special thanks goes out to
Christine for that sugges-
tion).
So, next week, this
column will go back to
helpful computer tips. My
new column is set to
debut on June 12.
And remember, "just
because you found it
online, that doesn't make
it true."
Sean McCarthy fixes

line.com (no hyphens).

Getting with an exercise program

I recently received a
special report on
exercise from the Mayo
Clinic and it had such
interesting information
that I wanted to pass some
of it along.
The first thing the report
did was clarify the differ-
ence between physical
activity which is any-
*thing you do that burns
calories, including walking
the dog and housework -
and exercise, which is a
planned form of physical
activity that has a specific
purpose.
Physical activity is great,
but regular exercise that
targets five areas is the best
for overall health.
The five areas essential to
overall health and fitness
are: aerobics or cardiovas-
cular exercise, strength
training, core stability,
flexibility and balance.
The good news is many
exercises accomplish more
than one goal. For example,
I have found that the yoga'
classes I'm taking work on
core stability, muscle
strength, flexibility and
balance.
Aerobic exercise increas- i
es the capacity of the body
to use oxygen and improves
the efficiency of the heart,
lungs and blood vessels. It

& WELL

can help you lose weight,
lower blood pressure and
decrease risk of heart
disease and diabetes, as
well as some cancers.
A brisk walk is a good
way to begin an aeobic
exercise program. The key
is to exercise for 30-60
minutes a day, five days a
week. Find something you
like to do, such as dancing
or working out to an
exercise video, if walking
outdoors or on a treadmill
is not your cup of tea. The
best exercise is the one
you'll do.
Strength training uses
free weights, resistance
bands, your own body,
weight or machine to
increase muscle strength
and endurance. It's one of
the best ways to slow the
decline in muscle mass that
happens as we get older. It
can help prevent falls and
injuries and keep you able
to live independently
longer.
You cai accomplish
strength training in just two

or three sessions a week for
20-30 minutes each. You
can vary the muscle groups
you use to avoid exercising
the same muscles two days
in a row, which can cause
injury. Start with 1- or 2-
pound weights and do
about 12 repetitions.
It might be a good idea to
invest in a session with a
personal trainer at a club
or fitness center. You and
perhaps & friend can share
the cost and have a pro-
gram set up to take into
account your special needs
and help prevent injuries.
Core stability refers to
the area that supports your
spine. We use to call it the
abs or abdominal muscles,
but it refers to all the
muscles that help stabilize'
you. A strong core helps
your balance, combats bad
posture and helps with
lower back pain.
While sit-ups and
crunches are one kind of
core exercise, they only
work one set of muscles.
Pilates, which is an
exercise program named
for its founder, yoga and
fitness balls are all
designed to work on the
core.
Techniques are very
important, so again, taking
a class at a community

center or having a few
sessions with a trainer will
set you on the right path.
Flexibility allows you to
continue to move through
the full range of motion
necessary for an independ-
ent, active life.
Stretching before and
after you work out is very
important. Yoga and tai chi
are also helpful in main-
taining flexibility.
Balance is so important
as we get older, because we
all worry about falls.
Improved balance increas-
es your confidence and
allows you to do more,
because you're not as
worried about falling.
Again, exercises such as
yoga and tai chi work on
balance, as does walking.
You can practice on your
own by standing on one leg
while holding onto a chair
or counter for safety.
It sounds like a lot and
you're probably wondering
how to fit this all into a
week. I'll discuss that next
time.

Rail
From page Al
railway plan is a revival of
a rail plan proposed in
2000-01 that was put on
the backburner, primarily
because of lack of federal
funds, said Kim Delaney
of the Treasure Coast
Regional Planning Coun-
cil.
SIf's back at the forefront
with money from the
stimulus package avail-
able, she said.
"We're asking economic
development boards,
totuiism entities, hotel'
and lodging organiza-
tions, real estates groups,
to help push this forward,
hitting all cylinders," said
Ms. Delany.
'Estimates of the
amount needed to kick off
the project run close 'to
$125 million putting
trains on tracks for the
300 miles from Jack-
sonmille to West Palm
Beach, NM. Delany said,
, Once in West Palm, the
passenger train would
connect to an existing
route from there to
Miami.
The total length of the
project would be 350
miles, but it would also
include an opportunity to
link to a national rail
going from New York to
Miami, said Ms. Delaney.
"This would open up
new destinations. for
tourism and really creates
access for residents to
have business or pleasure
travel," she said.
Ms. Delaney said the
project is an excellent
candidate for the stimu-
lus funding..
"Because of the work
that has already been
done on this project back
in 2001, the project is
nearly shovel-ready, it has
a defined corridor, has
great economic benefits
and train transit is an
environmentally-friendly
way to travel," said Ms.
Delany.
S"'It's very consistent
vWiih'ltte' atia national
initiatives with reducing
carbon footprints and
improving a green profile
in the state and nation,"
she said.

This column originally
appeared uly 14, 2006.

I guess one of the worst
things that can happen
to us in our driving
experience is to be involved
in an accident. '
Hopefully there are no
injuries, but we still have to
cope with our insurance
company and maybe the
other party's insurance :
company. We also have to
select a body shop or
accept the one recom-
mended by our insurance
company.
After you notify your
insurance company of your
accident, your first big
decision is to select a body
shop. This is every bit as
important as selecting the
right doctor or dentist,
except they are working on
your car, not your body or
teeth.
Most of the time, your
insurance company will
recommend a'body shop.
Consider their recommen-
dation, but also do your.
own due diligence.
If you choose the body
shop, that body shop is
working for you and is your
advocate, not your insur-
ance company's.
Remember that your
insurance company is the
one paying for your repairs
and one of their very
important considerations is
the cost of repairing your
car.
- They, of course, are
i interested inma quality.-
repair too, but cost is at
least an equal considera-
tion. Your No. 1 concern
should be quality, not cost.
Your insurance company .
may tell you it's OK to have
your car repaired at the
body shop of your choice,
but they "won't guarantee
the repairs."
A reputable body shop

ON CARS ,
EARL STEWART

will guarantee their own
repairs and you don't need
two guarantees.
I strongly recommend
that you give first consider-
ation to a body shop owned
by a franchised dealer of '
the make of your car. This
body shop will have an
advantage of faster avail-
ability of factory parts,
more experience repairing
your make and model and
the technicians.will usually
be better trained in repair-
ing your make of car.
. Obviously, a car that has
been damaged and
repaired is worth less than
one that has not: Even with
a quality repair, a late-
model car with substantial
repairs could be worth
thousands less when you
trade it in. This sad fact is a
very good reason you
should be sure that your
car is ruled a "total" by your
insurance company if it
meets their criteria.
A car that will cost 70
percent of its current
market value to repair is
usually considered a total,
and your insurance compa-
ny should replace your car,
not repair it.
If it's close call, result-
ing in a decision to repair
the vehicle, you should get
a second opinion. This is
the time when it's good to
have a body shop that you
chose that is beholden to
you and not your insurance
company.
Your insurance policy
will dictate the parts the
insurance company may
use in repairing your car. It
is.highly desirable to use
QEM parts (.parts ianufac-
tu red b the companyfthat
built your car) as opposed
to "after-market" parts,
often manufactured in ".
Taiwan or another.foreigi
county.
SThese parts are copies of
OEM parts and much
cheaper than the genuine
parts. They may not fit as
well or have the correct
tolerances. You should find

out before you purchase
your policy if it will provide
for OEM parts. If your
insurance company won't
authorize OEM parts; ask if
you can pay the difference.
It is worth the investment.
It is very difficult to
forecast accurately the time
it will take to complete a
major repair. This is
because there is usually
hidden damage that is
impossible to detect until
the car has been disassem-
bled.
: When hidden damage is
detected, the body shop
must call your insurance
company's adjustor to
authorize supplemental
work. This work may.
. require parts that were not
anticipated in the initial
repair and they have to be
ordered. There is no one to
blame for this, it's just a fact
of collision repair.
The bottom line: expect
delays when your car is
having a major repair. A'
quality body shop will
"under promise and over
deliver" by building in
some extra time to allow for
the inevitable supplemen-
tal repairs.
Be sure you understand
what degree of rental
reimbursement coverage
you have. It varies from
policy to policy. Some
policies have no rental car
reimbursement whatsoev-
er, some have partial and
some complete. In a major
repair, you can be without
your car for more than a
month.
In summary, choose your
insurance company ;
carefully and read your
policy carefully before you
commit. Choose your body
Shop just as carefully. You
need a quality body shop
owned by the franchised
dealer for your make of car
that will be an advocate for
your interests, more than
yourtinsurance,co. pany.

Most mistakes are very
common in nature, and even
the most savvy of travelers
make them, such ordering
tickets and misspelling a
name. But how seriously
misspelled it is will be the
deciding factor on whether
you pay a change fee or not
To avoid this very common
mistake, always look over
your documents before the
purchase is made.
Simple, you think?
Well, sometimes you
become so complacent when
you have done the same thing

just do not see it before it is
too late.
Another mistake people
make has to do with legal
names.

Hyphenated names such as

no hyphens in most, so it will

Simple rule of thumb:
whatever is on your passport

same airport. Cheaper flights
might have you land in one
airport, but the next flight
may be leaving from another
airport, which will cost you a
taxi fare to get to the other
airport. This is a common
mistake in online bookings.
Still want to do it yourself? I
would like to remind you that
travel agencies are forced to
charge a service fee for airline
Tickets because we are not
paid by the airlines to issue
them.
Agencies have to pay a fee
for the global distribution
system that allows agentsto
see all flights in and out of
airports, yet the airlines do
not feel compelled to pay us
commission to sell their seats.
This issue caused a lot of
agencies to stop booking
airline tickets because it is
just not profitable and the
liability is huge. Those of us
who still book airline tickets
do so to help service our
clients. It is a great tool to
have when you are helping
plan a vacation.
I encourage my clients to
research areas of interest they
wish to travel, but when it
comes to reservations, you
might want to seek the help of
a professional.

STUART If you like
your blues and gumbo hot,
the Sauce Boss is coming
to town.
Bill Wharton, aka the
Sauce Boss, brings his
blues guitar, stories and
big pot of gumbo to the
Lyric Theatre on June 19.
He spoke recently about
an act that combines two
passions, music and cook-
ing.
The self-styled "inventor
of gastronomical boogie-
woogie" has been a musi-
cian for years, but he
began incorporating food
into the act in 1990.
"I've always been a
musician into roots
music," Mr. Wharton said.
"I started incorporating
food into the show and it
moved in a different direc-
tion. People talk about a
musician 'cooking' figura-
tively. With me, it's more
real life."
What Mr. Wharton does
is cook a big pot of gumbo
while he and two other
musicians perform.
"When I started making
hot sauce, I began carrying
it around because people
demanded it. I began
incorporating it into the
act because I wanted to
show how good it is to
cook with. Now, 150,000
bowls later, here we are."
Mr. Wharton described
the show as a juggling rou-
tine.
"We begin playing a tune
or two and the band cooks
on the back burner while I

guitar and

of the Lyric

do the cooking demon-
stration. Sometimes we're
playing while I'm stirring.
At the end of the show,
everyone eats at Uncle
Bill's Soup Kitchen, either
onstage on in the lobby."
Mr. Wharton is from
Orlando, but spent a lot of
time in Louisiana and
learned to make gumbo
from guitarist Kenny
Neale's mother.
"I usually ask if anyone
doesn't like okra," he said.
"I say, 'too bad. You don't
like it because it's yucky
and slimy. Mine's not
yucky and slimy.' All you

have to do is get it nice
and hot and the slime and
yuck go away. It's like a
miracle cure for okra-pho-
bia."
Mr. Wharton was
immortalized by Jimmy
Buffett in his song,
"I.Will Play for Gumb6,"
and two of his tunes, "Let
the Big Dog Eat" and
"Great Big Fanny" were
included in a Buffett
album. The cooking gui-
tarist is a musician first
and a cook second.
"When I first started
cooking, I thought it
would get a foot in the

door," he said.
"We've always been real
musicians. It's evolved
into something more than
a show, more than just
music. It's almost like a.
tent revival meeting with a
lot of community in it. It's
a soul-shouting picnic of a
rock'n roll brotherhood."

Bill Wharton, the Sauce
Boss, comes to the Lyric
Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler
Ave., Stuart on June 19 at 7
p.m. Tickets are $30. Call

Aries-March 21-April 19
Yours is a good life. You have
been given the eight keys of
true happiness: purpose,
love, peace, health, abun-
dance, faith, joy and creativi-
ty. Fill yourself each day with
these gifts given at birth and
you will meet all daily chal-
lenges with grace and ease.
You were chosen at birth to
be alpha, the leader of the
zodiac family, you know.

Taurus-April 20-May 20
You want a lot more out of
life than just basic survival.
You have earned it. Now go
get it. Refuse to let any
doubt, fear or indecision
hold you back. There are a;
number of new opportuni-,
ties at hand. You have the
courage, determination and
experience to move them
forward. Now it's time for
action. Success is assured.

Gemini-May 21-June 21
Make staying centered and
balanced your No. 1 priority.
Refuse to let the world or
negative people pull you
away from your causes and
commitments. New respon-
sibilities are coming. Keep
letting go of old habits, atti-
tudes, and things no longer
useful in life. Do this and it
will give you time to go fish-
ing. No need to work all the
time.

Canter-June 22-July 22
Healing and family are two
of your very most important
ideals.. You give your best
under all 'circumstances. I
wouldsay that you demon-
strate the finest of human
virtues. You aren't afraid to
go out on a limb to rescue a
stricken pal. You are truly a
bridge over troubled waters.
The angels cheer you on. So
do we.

Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
Leo, you are the middle of
the fire signs. This means
that you burn brighter and
hotter than your other zodi-
ac mates. Much success is
assured when you keep this
heat focused and directed
on your main goals. Refuse
to let unimportant things
dilute your passion. Contin-

Choirs seek
rehearsal space
The Ave D Boys' Choir and
the newly-formed girls' choir
need a rehearsal facility. Both
choirs have become so suc-
cessful that space is needed
for rehearsals seven days a
week.
Dani Dreizehnter, the Fort
Pierce youth officer who vol-
unteers with the choirs, said
they really need a home of
their own.
"While we greatly appreci-
ate the generous donation of
free use by the First United
Methodist Church. and

Northside Christian Fellow-
ship Church, when the
churches have a function,
rehearsals are cancelled and
it is difficult to re-schedule."
The desired location
would have a place to leave
and secure equipment,
accommodate. 70 children
and 15 adults, fit tables and
chairs for the meals that are
served with each rehearsal
and for tutoring, contain
some office space and an
area for cooking and cooling
equipment for food prepara-
tion.
The organizations are
totally funded by donation
.and gifts are welcome. Vol-
unteers are also needed.
If you wish to make a con-
tribution or know of a space
the groups could use, call Ms.
Dreizehnter at (772) 882-

Summer changes to courses

Sr I-T TM TO ED BRINGINTHIS AD m Ra |
S T TIME TO REPLACE THAT TIRED, RUSTED UTDO ? I
A-A Vt OAN A s

That time of the year
loathed by all golfers is
here. Now is the
moment when golfers
across the land swear at
every course superintendent
in town.
By now, or within the next
few weeks, every course will
undergo aerification, as they
ready themselves for the
summer season and try to
remove some of the com-
paction that came with the
overly-dry winter and spring
we've experienced.
Nearly every golfer
despises this practice,
including myself. It always
seems that just when the
course is at its best, it's time
for major work to be done.
When you look at the long-
term benefits, however, it's
easy to understand why
aerification is a necessary
evil.
Like changing the oil in
your car, aerification is a
form of preventative
maintenance. Aerification is

an integral part of any
successful golf course
management plan. The job
of every superintendent is
not only to make the course
look fabulous today, but also
tomorrow and down the
road.
It's important for everyone
to understand how impor-
tant verification is to
Producing healthy turf and a
healthy golf course in the
future. Aerification achieves
three major objectives.
First, it relieves soil
compaction. Second, it
provides a method for
improving soil mixture
around the highest part of
the grass root system.
Finally, it reduces or pre-
vents the build-up of too
much thatch.

When golfers by the
thousands walk on the
greens and drive carts on
the fairways, the traffic
causes the soil near the
surface to compact into a
single hard layer.
Over time, the soil
becomes so tightly com-
pacted that water and air
have a difficult time pene-
trating the surface to reach
the root system of the grass.
Once this begins, the roots
decline, the turf becomes
weak and disease and other
problems begin to appear.
Aerification pulls plugs
from the compacted soil,
allowing an infusion of life-
sustaining water and air to
reach the roots and bring
about growth.
To give you an idea of just
how compacted the soil
becomes, pick up a few of
the plugs laying around after
the superintendent is done.

TREASURE COAST The
Helping People Succeed
Foundation calendar com-
mittee invites artists to sub-
mit original works for inclu-
sion in the 2010 'Art for
Living" calendar.
Artists living in Martin, St.
Lucie, Indian River and Okee-
chobee counties are eligible
to submit their work, which
must f6cus on subjects of

local interest or have a tropi-
cal theme. Entries maybe cre-
ated in any two-dimensional
medium, except photogra-
phy. Slide submissions must
be received at Helping People
Succeed on or before June 26.
Proceeds support the baby
steps program, which helps
3,000 children through devel-
opmental instruction, music
and movement classes and
education.

them with your fingers. They
often feel like little plugs of
cement. Now imagine air
and watei trying to pene-
trate a layer of this to reach
the roots.
On the greens, the holes
are filled with a sand-like
topdressing that drains well
and resists compaction.,By
introducing this sandy
topdressing periodically, a
superintendent improves
the green's top layer and
helps avoid the expense of

mc

rebuilding or renovating the
green.
The growth of turf adds to
the protective layer of
organic material on the
surface.
This layer, called thatch, is
an accumulation of dead
grass, leaves, stems and
roots. A strong and healthy
thatch layer helps the turf
recover faster from divots
and cart tracks and helps
prevent the intrusion of
insects and disease.
The newest aerification
machines use smaller tongs
to pull plugs from the
greens. These smaller holes
help the green heal faster
and allows superintendents
to get a better dispersion of
topdressing. It usually takes
a couple of weeks and a few
days or nights of steady rain
for the course to fully
recover.
If course superintendents
plan to keep the course
healthy and in playable
shape over the hot summer
months, they need to start
now by getting the grass as
lush and happy as possible.
I'll gladly trade a couple
weeks of putts that bounce a
few more times if it means I
get to play on a better.
course over the summer.
So, before you trash your
superintendent the next
tim~e you see him fueling up
the aerification machines,
remember that he's only
trying to provide you with
the best golf course, now
and in the future.
